Bearded Dragon Care Sheet – 6 Top Tips

This bearded dragon care sheet will hopefully help you better understand and care for your Bearded Dragon

I want to stress the importance of knowing what a bearded dragon needs to be healthy and happy, BEFORE you purchase one!

Healthy Looking Bearded Dragon:

Whether you decide to purchase your bearded dragon from a breeder or pet store there are certain things you must look for before you purchase your beardie.

They should be alert and active. They should be watching you with interest and curiosity. Their eyes should be clear and bright, you shouldn’t be able to see any puss or anything in the eyes.

When looking at their bodies you should look for any sores or infections of any kind, especially if the beardie is housed with other beardies. Male beardies will fight!

Make sure that where ever you purchase your beardie you have a reasonable time frame to return him if you need to. usually 14 days to a month is good, and that you take him to your Vet as soon as you can and have him checked over carefully.

Bearded Dragon Habitat

The bearded dragon needs room to run around, not climb too much. These pets are from Australia and are use to being able to roam free in the desert area. The best enclosure for beardies in my opinion is a glass aquarium. The aquarium should be big enough for them to run back and forth, but not that big they can not catch their crickets.

Beardies 3 to 7 inches can be kept in a 10 gal. aquarium while 7 to 12 in. beardies can be kept in a 20 gal. tank. Beardies over a foot long, which is 12 in., should be kept in a 40 gal. tank.

Lighting/Temperature

Make sure you have a Basking Lamp and a UV Bulb. The uv/uvb rays provide vitamin D which helps with the body’s ability to adsorb calcium. The temp should be around 90 degrees and 100 degrees during the day, and during the night the temp shouldn’t go below 70 degrees at all during the night, however if it does your beardie can survive one night if it drops that low then you should invest in a night heating light.

Make sure your beardie has a cool side and a basking side in his tank. Beardies love to bask during the day but you need to keep his food and water on the cool side

The best way to heat a glass aquarium is to use what is called under-the-tank heating pad, you can get one of these at most all pet stores. You do not, I repeat, do not want to use any kind of heating rocks or fixtures in the tank your beardie can reach.

Substrate:

Now this is a very tricky section, why? Because each dragon is different and it seems to depend on your region. I recommend reptile carpet because its easy to clean, its inexpensive, and it comes in variety of colors and sizes.

With young beardies try to use the felt type carpets, other types have loops that their nails will catch and can harm them.

Water Needs

Bearded dragons need access to water all day and all night. Their natural habitat in Australia provides water for them from the dew on the plant leaves and ground. They are use to drinking this way and a lot of beardies do not drink from any type of water dish.

It is important to make sure they are misted regularly with a misting spray bottle. For babies and juveniles mist them daily and also mist their perch and the sides of the glass aquarium. You should put enough mist on their heads until they no longer drink it or run off.

Also, your beardie needs to absorb moisture their the skin pores, so they should be bathed in a tub of water that comes no higher than their elbows for at least 15 to 20 minutes. You should do this daily for babies and juveniles and weekly for adults.

Proper Diet for a Bearded Dragon:

Bearded Dragons are omnivorous, this simply means they eat both meat and vegetables. Now they can not eat just anything, they have a very special diet you must follow to keep them happy and healthy.

The size of their food should no bigger than the space between their eyes, if given too big of food it can cause impaction and other health issues, so be careful on the size of food, any food items, you feed your beardie.

One thing some new owners don’t seem to realize is that baby beardies and juvenile beardies need to eat 2 to 3 times a day! Not just once a day.

Wear Gothic Clothing For Getting a Good Look

Gothic fashion is considered morbid as it features black lips, black dyed hair, dark eyeliner, dark finger-nails and black clothes. Thus, Gothic fashion clothing is a great way to express dark feelings & thoughts. Gothic clothing fashion, which was also considered a protest against the extravagance of the 1980s, can be described as a profusion of dark velvets, fishnets, lace, leather shaded with scarlet, tight corsets, gloves, accessorized with silver ornaments. More elegant and sophisticated styles of dressing were seen in the early Gothic period. Sleeves became tight and the forearms enjoyed more importance. Minimal trimmings on the Gothic dresses were also a feature of the early Gothic period. The Gothic dresses became longer and the necklines went deeper. With the passage of time, Gothic clothing styles changed with the fabrics looking stiffer in their appearance.

One of the Gothic garments, Gothic corset, is a piece of clothing that shapes a girls body like an hourglass. It is historical in nature as it traces you back to the Victorian and medieval ages. The Gothic corsets are great fashion clothing as was in the medieval. In the beginning, Gothic corsets were very uncomfortable to wear. It was with the passage of time that Gothic corsets became softer and convenient. Many of the Gothic clothes such as fishnets are summer temperature friendly. Fishnets can be worn on legs, arms, or even as shirts and jumpers. Lace-trimmed long skirt, flowing gauzy skirts and cotton bloomers are some of those parts of Gothic clothing that are very comfortable to wear in the summer. Male Goths can wear light natural fiber shirts and short black trousers. Wide-brimmed hats and black umbrellas are also widely used by Goths as accessories.

Gothic fashion boots are one of the many compelling Gothic fashion accessories. Female Goths generally wear boots with high heels, while Gothic men wear flatted boots. The color of the boots is usually dark black. However, one in a blue moon, you can see Goths wearing bloody-red boots. Gothic boots were usually heavy as they were used at work.

In 1910s, looks gave a boost to some kind of Goth fashion. She inspired many to follow the style of her dark eye-shadow. Bettie Page, David Bowie and Robert Smith are the other Gothic style icons. Gothic clothing is not exclusive to American and European countries. The clothing fashion is also gaining popularity in eastern countries such as China and India. The important point of Gothic clothing is to bring out your best Gothic features.

The Nutritional Benefits of Hesperidin

Hesperidin is classified as a citrus bioflavonoid. The flavonoid contains the flavonne glycoside (glucoside). It is made up of the flavonne (class of flavonoids) hesperitin and the deschloride rutinose. Hesperedin is very predominant in lemons and peppers. The peel and the membrane have the highest hesperin concentration.

Orange juice with pulp has more flavonoids than orange juice without pulp. Sweet oranges- (citrus sinesis) and tangelos are the richest dietary sources of hesperidin.

Known benefits of Hesperedin

In Europe, hesperidin and a flavonne glycoside diosmin is used to treat venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids. Hesperidin, rutin, and others are thought to be helpful in reducing capillary permeability. It may also have anti-inflammatory effects as well. These are known as Vitamin P.

Hesperidin may also treat vascular disorders in humans, treat cancer, and some autoimmune diseases. It might also be an anti-allergen and anti-inflammatory agent. This is based on experiments with animals.

Further Benefits of Hesperedin

Hesperidin, along with other bioflavanoids, can improve capillarie health and connective tissues. Due to this, it has been stated that it can help with bruising, varicose veins, and fragile capillaries.

Other benefits of Hesperedin include an ablility to help and get rid of hay fever and other similar allergies.

Hesperidin is an important nutrient that works together with Vitamin C to maintain the health of collagen. Sagging and wrinkling of the skin is due to the result of a breakdown of collagen. To get the best benefits from Hesperedin, and to use this nutrient the best way, you need take the nutrient synergistically with Vitamin c, otherwise your pretty much wasting your time taking this nutrient.

Our Precautions

There are some precautions for those taking or considering taking hesperidin. It is not to be used if one is hypersensitive to hesperidin or any component with hesperidin in it. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should avoid high doses unless it recommended by their physicians. Adverse reactions when taking hesperidin include gastrointestinal problems and nausea.

Because hesperidin is not considered a nutrient that is essential, there is no RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) set.

Toxicity doesn’t seem to be an issue according to various studies.

Try and steer away from large dosages such as 500 mgs or higher.

A dosage of between 10 mgs and 100 mgs seems to be the safest and best option as a on a health stand point.

Tips on Choosing a Hesperidin Supplement

1. Obtain your product from pharmaceutical GMP compliant manufacturers. Such places comply with the strictest regulatory standards for the manufacture of nutritional supplements. This is an issue consumers need to take seriously because dietary supplements are unregulated in the U.S., and many products have been shown to contain contaminants or do not even contain what is stated on the label.

2. Be sure that you choose a product that does not contain any fillers or additives (examples include: sugar, starch, gluten, silica (sand!)) or any artificial colors or flavors of any kind.

3. Hesperidin works synergistically with Vitamin C, as mentioned above, to maintain the health of collagen, and the health enzyme Bromelain (derived from pineapples) which enhances its absorption, giving you the best possible benefits of hesperidin. Because of this fact, all 3 nutrients should be taken together for the best health results and for maximum efficacy. Also, we believe it is best to take the nutrient with other prominent bioflavonoids, quercitin and rutin.

Why Women Are More Susceptible to Cocaine Addiction Than Men

Addiction is an incapacitating neuropsychiatric disorder wherein a person gravitates toward high levels of drug use, prioritizes drug-seeking behavior over other activities, and repeatedly vacillates between abstinence and relapse. The problem of addiction can occur in anybody irrespective of factors like age, social status, religion, type of personality, etc.

However, gender differences may play a crucial role in fastening the development of addiction. Compared to men, women have been found to be more vulnerable to drug addiction, especially cocaine. Since cocaine has the potential to trigger extra energy and alertness, it is being widely used by women to complete work by staying awake. Moreover, it has become an easy way to escape from emotional or mental health problems.

In the past, most clinical research on addiction or other areas of interest were male-dominated. Clinicians and scientists of yesteryears avoided including female subjects in studies because of the belief that their hormonal cycle was too much of a variable to attain conclusive results. Due to the above reason, the inclusion of women participants becomes a major barrier to understand the way the development of addiction subtly differs due to biological changes.

The inclusion of women in clinical trials is somewhat a new development. However, it has led to the development of better medicine, improved intervention approaches, and enhanced understanding of how an addiction progresses among men and women. This progressive shift in the approach of studies has led to a better understanding of the nuances of addiction.

One of such studies discussed below highlights the key reasons behind the rise in the popularity of cocaine among women. This sex-specific study on cocaine reward published in the journal Nature Communications explains the facts and figures related to this problem in detail.

Hormonal activities affect addiction in women

The study, conducted by the researchers from Mount Sinai Hospital and led by Dr. Erin Calipari, found that hormonal fluctuations explain the development of an addiction among women who use cocaine at the rates faster than men. The study also highlights that women are likely to start using cocaine at an earlier age and in greater amounts than men. Lastly, the study shows that women are more likely to have difficulty in avoiding cocaine than men.

The researchers used mice to explain the difference in the expression of cocaine use between men and women. Since both dopamine pathways and drug responses in mice are similar to that of humans, these mice were analyzed throughout the different stages of their main reproductive cycles.

The researchers found that menstrual cycles in mice can significantly affect the impact of cocaine. When the hormone levels of female mice are low, they tend to mimic male mice. However, if the estrogen levels are high in female mice, they witness a marked increase in the rewarding effects of cocaine.

The female mice on cocaine not only demonstrated that dopamine activities are affected but also displayed that these activities lingered in the female brains than male. The study also found that environment plays a significant role that differed between male and female mice. The researchers highlighted that female mice are more likely to prefer places closely associated with the source of cocaine, which is not so prominent among male mice.

What does it mean?

The findings of the study explain humans also exhibit specific environments to complement their drug experience. It also highlights that environmental cues act as a strong trigger in the relapse process. As female subjects were found to respond to environmental cues and displayed preference for places that administered cocaine more than men, treatment providers could use this information to great effect while catering to male and female patients.

For instance, a pharmacological intervention that works for one gender may not always ensure the same results for the other genders. Similarly, it is also important to tackle the issue of environmental triggers that are one of the major contributors to relapse. In addition, treatment providers have to take into account the cyclic pattern of hormonal changes in women and how monthly fluctuations of hormones can affect the efficacy of certain treatment models.

The study, however, has its own limitations. The female subjects taken in the study experienced unstable hormonal activities at the time of the study that impacted the range of the findings. Since the study prioritized cocaine use with respect to estrogen in women, there is a need to conduct further study to comprehend if there are other factors that dictate responses to cocaine than just estrogen levels.

Path to recovery

Cocaine addiction is a serious drug crisis among both men and women across the nation. However, the risk of witnessing adverse health complications is greater for women. With the widening of the gap in terms of cocaine use between women and men, it becomes essential to identify the risk factors. It is also crucial to ensure adequate treatment to ensure early recovery.

Health and the Addict – Alcoholic and Opiate Treatment Patients

Health for the addicted person is many times considered a liability. Whether your concern is health for an opiate addiction, alcohol addiction, methadone addiction or some other addiction, your health should be considered an asset in steps toward recovery. Your health should be your greatest asset. If you are a drug abuser or are addicted, then your asset is not as valuable.

By putting drugs in your body you are making toxic investments in to your most valuable asset, your health. Think for a moment about the health issues that may arise from an addiction problem. The list is long. You may develop any of the following as consequences of drug abuse or use: HIV, Hepatitis C, skin problems, liver problems, tooth decay, bone problems, venereal diseases and a myriad of other health issues.

There is no way to address health of an addict as a single solitary problem. Your problem may be different than the problem someone else may have. However, there are usually many similarities that may be resolved in the same manner even though they demonstrate different symptoms. The root cause may be the same. For instance most people gain weight when they enter methadone maintenance but there are some that lose weight. Same root cause i.e. methadone. In both situations metabolism is changed. In both situations the same product is the solution.

Your good health is an asset. Your health should be your greatest asset. Unfortunately, you have made toxic investments in your health. By using and /or abusing drugs you have put toxins in your body that have created negative issues in your life as well as in your health. You have put a lot of stress on your body and ultimately your health and well being. Many of the negative things you are experiencing can be changed. It is time for you to invest wisely in your health. It is time to make your health a valuable asset.

The investment in your health will not only increase your body function, hence increasing your asset, but will be profitable to you in your life style and maybe even in terms of money. It is an investment in your life. God gave us a body that will function properly if it is adequately and properly fed nutritionally.

There are some things you can do to help improve your asset. One of the easiest things is to increase your water intake. You need to eat whole foods as much as is possible. Limit the amount of processed foods you eat. You need to exercise. It does not have to elaborate just increase your body movement. Try to get and maintain a healthy weight. Decrease your sugar and sugar products (this includes things like bread, pastas and alcohol).

If you have an opiate addiction, heroin addiction, drug withdrawals, methadone withdrawals or you are in methadone treatment, opiate treatment or any drug treatment you owe it to yourself to improve your health which is main your asset.

As your body becomes an asset to you, you again become an asset to society. Invest today. Invest wisely. It’s your health. It’s your life. It is time for you to live your life to the fullest.

Keeping Rear Fanged Snakes As Pets!

There are four basic dental structures within the world of snakes. The Aglyphous group simply means that this group of snakes possess no elongated teeth what so ever. This group encompasses snakes of the Boa and Python family as well as various others. Next is the Ophistoglyphous group. This is the group from which this paper is written about. Though not technically a fang, the ophistoglyphous group do possess elongated rear teeth. There is a groove running from top to bottom on the anterior aspect of the tooth. This groove channels saliva from the gum line downward into the wound caused by the elongated teeth. Gravity is the only force working to drive the saliva into the would as there is no gland or holding apparatus surrounded by muscles to force the saliva downward.

In order for a true envenomation to take place the rear fanged snake must hold on to its prey item and actively work its fangs into the wound. This gives the required time needed for the saliva to flow down the channeled fang and into the wound. A minimum of ten to twenty seconds would be required for the saliva to make the trip from gum line to the wound. The longer the snake remains attached to its subject, the more serious the envenomation will become. A great deal depends upon the toxicity of the saliva itself.

The next group would be the Proteroglyphous group There are some very popular members belonging to this group, members such as the Cobras, Kraits, Mambas, Taipans,Coral Snakes to name but a few. These snakes all have short fixed fangs in the front of the upper jaw, just below each eye. It is believed by most that these snakes possessed their fangs in the rear of their mouths millions of years ago and over time they migrated forward into the position they hold today. The fangs must be short, to avoid the piercing of the lower jaw. Even the fangs of the King Cobra, (Ophiophagus Hannah) has fangs less then 1/2 inch in length. This group belongs to a family called Elapids, some of the most potent snakes on Earth today. The final group of snakes are also well known through out thew world.

They belong to the Solenoglyphous group, They have folding fangs which allows them to have extremely long fangs. The Gaboon Viper, (Bitis gabonica) has fangs that measure two (2) inches in length. The fangs are in the front roughly under each eye and when not in use rest along the upper jaw. Muscles lower the fangs when needed and lock them into place. The base of the fang lines up perfectly with the venom duct forming a tight seal. When muscles contract, venom flows through the fang and is forced out the opening at the tip of the fang. Snakes such as all pit vipers ie. rattlesnakes, cottonmouth’s, copperheads are members of the Solenoglyphous group as are the Vipers of the Old World. The Death Adder of Australia is one of the few Elapids to possess this type of fang structure.

The above are basic dental structures of known snakes of the World. The pet trade has been a legitimate industry dating back Roman Empire. Reptiles have been part of that trade since its inception. In the 1950’s rear fanged snakes were all considered harmless to humans and were sold in all of the modern industrial countries. It was in the late 1950’s when the Pet industry decided to rethink its claim that “all rear fanged snakes are harmless”. On September 25Th.1957 Karl P. Schmidt was attempting to Identify a snake that had been brought into the Museum of Natural History in Chicago Ill. where he was employed as a Herpetologist. An assistant was holding the green colored snake when Schmidt decided to handle it himself. He grabbed the snake just a bit to far back of the head which allowed the snake room to turn and sink one of its rear fangs into his finger.

He quickly released the snake and decided to work with it some more on the following day. He left work around 5PM and on his way home he stated that he felt queasy. Later that night he vomited and had difficulty sleeping. He called in sick on the morning of the 26Th. but stated he would be in on the following day. He vomited one more time and as he brushed his teeth he noticed blood on the tooth brush. His wife was upset enough to summon a friend who called for an ambulance to take him to the Municipal Hospital for a check up. He was admitted and at 3PM he was pronounced dead. The snake was a Boomslang (Dispholidus Typus) also known as the African Tree Snake. It was sold in pet stores around the world because rear fanged snakes are harmless to humans. With in three months all Rear fanged snakes for sale in the pet trade were taken from the shelves.

Today we have a fairly good handle of what species of snakes are harmless and what ones are dangerous to humans. Snakes belonging to the Boiga Genus, Dispholidus, Rhabdophis and Thelotornis Genera also have members within each family that possess venom potent enough to cause a fatal bite among humans. The common North American Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) has rear fangs but its venom is not supplied in sufficient quantities to cause harm to humans. The lovable Hog nose snake (Heterodon platyrhinos) is a member of the rear fanged club and it is all but impossible to get one to bite a human. The large number of Rear Fanged snakes throughout the world are all members of the Colubridae family.

The largest family of them all, consisting of over 2,500 separate Genera’s. Though several of the rear fanged snakes are considered safe for personal ownership, it is not considered wise to allow any snake to chew on any part of your anatomy, even if it appears cute, as it endeavors to scare or defeat a large human. It could be doing far more then looking funny or cute! Most venom’s manufactured by the Duvernoy’s glands of Rear Fanged Snakes acts very slowly on the human body. Effects of the venom might not appear for 12 to 24 hours after the bite. When the symptoms do appear, it could very well be to late. In all but a few instances, there is no anti venom on the market available for treating a bite and bites are handled symptomatically. The best rule of thumb is to treat all Rear Fanged snakes as venomous snakes. Technically that is exactly what they are.

As a general rule most people in the United States as well as other developed nations take it for granted that anything on the store shelf is safe when used as directed. Most experts will tell you that snakes should not be handled to often but as with anything new, humans like to feel what they have purchased. In the case of owning pet snakes, Most ophiofiles can’t wait to get their new acquisition home to hold and inspect it. In the case of handling any venomous species of snake, the urge should be tempered with restraint. Any new snake requires time to become accustomed to its new surroundings. A snake that would ordinarily not bite could very well strike at its new owner if handled to soon after its purchase. The last thing anyone needs is to be known as the first fatality known as a result of receiving a bite from a seemingly harmless snake. Use Caution and live longer!

What To Do When Your Dog Whines Like A Child

Whining is one of the earliest vocal behaviors of puppies. Its first significance appears to be related to the stress of social isolation, cold and hunger. When whining becomes a problem in a pet under 6 months of age, the cause is usually easily determined by defining when and where it occurs.

Why does your dog whine?

A pup whines to gain some objective. For example, the pup that is isolated in the kitchen on its first nights in a new home finds that sufficient whining gains the sympathy of the owners, who may then carry the pet into bed with them. This puppy often generalizes its whining to many other life's frustrating stresses, and whines for relief. Another cause may be a genuine internal physical discomfort, such as gastritis or internal parasitism. If a problem whiner has not been thoroughly examined by its veterinarian for health problems, this should be done before any remedial behavioral steps are undertaken.

Certain Arctic breeds (Malamutes and Huskies) and some strains of German Shepherds are apt to emit an excruciatingly piercing whine whenever they are anxious. This type of anxiety whining is more complex and requires careful attention to the relationship between the owners and the pet involved than the simpler forms typically shown by young puppies.

How can you stop your dog from whining?

In the simplest type of whining, that which is goal oriented, correction is straightforward: satisfy the need. However, if isolation is the cause, the problem must be solved with the same steps applied in barking.

The owner should stop isolating the pup, or, if this is impossible, gain a strong leadership position with the pup and use some distracting stimulus to interrupt the first signs of anxiety when the pet is isolated. This type of correction requires some play acting. The owner must prepare to be going off to work even on the weekends, and start the workday an hour earlier than usual to allow enough time for the correction procedure.

When whining results from generalized anxiety, the pup involved is typically a "bossy" type. These pups whine when the owner's attentions are withdrawn. They seem generally discontent in any situation they can not control, such as car rides, when the owners have company and try to ignore the pup, or when the owner tries to make a telephone call. In other words, these pets become the canine counterparts of human children best described as spoiled brats.

Correction in these pups involves the owner's winning response to simple commands, such as "Come," "Sit" and "Stay." The puppy must be ignored at all other times insofar as praise, petting or other unearned social (or food) rewards are concerned. If the pup penster for attention, it is immediately given one of the commands taught and then petted briefly. This teachers the puppy that the owners are in control of the relationship and avoids physical punishment, a step that is usually unsuccessful.

Type 2 Diabetes – Physical Activity and the Risk of a Heart Attack

Heart and blood vessel disease is one of the most dreaded complications of Type 2 diabetes. One of the ways of actually predicting who is at high risk of heart disease is to test the urine for a protein called aluminum. High blood pressure, a leading cause of heart attacks as well as a complication of Type 2 diabetes, is frequently associated with a positive test for albumin in the urine.

Researchers at the University of Saarlandes, in Homburg / Saar, Germany, looked at volunteers who had high blood pressure. These volunteers included people with and without diabetes, and compared their physical activity with tests for aluminum in their urine.

These results were published in October 2011 in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Preventive Rehabilitation.

  • 20,786 volunteers with high blood pressure were included in the study.

The amount of albumin in the urine of people who performed regular physical exercise at least 4 hours per week was significantly lower than that in inactive patients.

Regular physical activity was associated with a 25 per cent lower risk for urinary aluminum than wasactivity. People who regularly performed strenuous activity had a lower risk of urinary albumin than those who performed only moderate exercises.

From this information, the investigators concluded that in people with high blood pressure, including those with Type 2 diabetes, physical activity was associated with a reduced risk for aluminum in the urine.

One definition of strenuous exercise is physical activity that makes the exerciser sweat or breathe hard. By that definition, "strenuous" depends at least to some extent upon the individual's state of fitness …

  • one way to make your exercise strenuous is to subtract your age from 220 and multiply by.80. Keeping your heart rate at that level is considered strenuous.
  • If walking brings your heart rate up to that number, then you probably do not need to try anything more strenuous.
  • if it takes a brisk run to bring your heart rate up to the number, then running briskly is strenuous enough for you.

If you keep up a regular program of doing a certain exercise and keep measuring your heart rate, you will probably see a decrease in your heart rate over time. More strenuous exercises can then be introduced until your target heart rate is reached and lowered again.

If is always advised you check with your doctor, trainer, or physical therapist for a safe, effective way to perform regular physical activity.

Testing Human Memory

Thanks to the development of new technologies in the field of neuroscience, scientists now have a firmer understanding of the way human memory functions. The main tool employed these days is the fMRI – short for “Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.” This new tool provides researchers and scientists a functional map of the human brain, and can thus show how the brain works in action. It provides a monitor on which parts of the brain are functioning as a person goes about performing tasks such as speaking, moving, remembering, or thinking. The development of the MRI has been key in improving the quality of patients’ lives. Not only has it been a useful tool for researchers, surgeons also make use of the fMRI (or MRI for short).

The outcomes of this new technology have been enormously beneficial in the medical world. The method is non-invasive and safe, without negative side effects. It is predicted that MRIs can help surgical procedures enormously for patients suffering from strokes, epilepsy, and tumors.

Recently, an important discovery was made by researchers at Stanford University. They found a cluster of neurons separated by a mere few inches involved in two vital but separate aspects of memory in humans. With the use of an fMRI, it was discovered that people who are attempting to encode information in to the form of a memory use the posterior of the brain’s hippocampus, while more activity was present in the anterior region when the people were attempting to retain information stored in the memory.

As the encoding and retrieving of information is vital to the learning process, this was big news indeed – not to mention the fact that it can also be quite useful, in that the encoding and retrieving process is generally thought to be one of the first to be affected by the onslaught of Alzheimer’s disease in patients.

Thousands of images of the frontal lobe of the brain were captured via the fMRI as the individuals participating in the study went about performing different tasks related to memory. The fMRI was used to compare flows of blood oxygen to different parts of the brain at different times in order to determine which neurons are more activated during the performing of a specific task. While the fMRI cannot show blood flowing to individual nerve cells, it does distinguish activities that can be happening by as little as one or two millimeters apart.

The entire system of memory that they studied was little more than the size of a golf ball. It is an intricate system that is comprised of numerous parts, each of which differs in its composition and the way it is connected to others.

One part of the study involved showing the participants drawings of every day objects and animals one day before as well as thirty minutes before the fMRI was launched. Then, during the MRI, the scientists showed the participants words. If they saw the name of something that they had previously been shown before, they were asked to squeeze a bulb. This task involves the retrieval process of memory. During this process, it was later observed in the fMRI pictures, there was more brain activity in the subiculum region of the hippocampus when people were showed words for pictures they had seen before.

Another segment of the study involved showing the participants pictures in color of various outdoor and indoor scenes as their brains were being scanned. The indoor pictures would have to be recalled in a later memory test. Some photographs were shown repeatedly, others only once. When the participants were shown photos that they had never seen before, researchers noticed that activity was greatest in a posterior area called the parahippocampal cortex.

While it had long been suspected that different structures in the brain’s memory system were specialized on different tasks, scientists had never before been able to establish this in human subjects – only in laboratory rats and monkeys.

Prophylaxis of Glomerulonephritis (GN)

Since an attack of acute GN occurs as a result of sore throat, prophylactic steps should have taken to eradicate the infection in the entire family, and ideally in the whole community, where a particular case has occurred, so that further spread of infection can be prevented. The patient, as well as other associated persons, should be treated for sore throat with a suitable antibiotic. If possible, culture and sensitivity should also be taken out after taking throat swabs, and the antibiotic indicated in the culture report should be given. Immediate treatment should be taken in cases where the culture shows the growth of beta-haemolytic streptococcus, responsible for sore throat / an acute attack of GN. Such urgent measures may save various other members of the family / community from an attack of acute GN.

Since a sore throat infection is the main culprit in such acute case, general measures are required to prevent its incidence in masses. Overcrowding, highly-populated areas, especially like the slums, should be avoided as far as possible. In other words, living conditions have to be improved. A patient with a sore throat should take an antibiotic at the earliest, and keep himself / herself isolated, so that the infection of throat does not spread to others, while coughing, etc. The patient coughs out droplets of sputum, contaminated with organisms, into the air, which may be inhaled by other persons, and hence the infection spreads in a family / community.

Here general measures regarding the prevention of sore throat, as well as its prevention in a community / family, who are likely to contract sore throats, are urgently needed, so that the disease can be prevented, and its further spread arrested.

At the same time, steps should be taken to detect hidden cases of GN as early as possible, so that the disease can be brought under control, and further progress, including fatal complications, prevented. For this, the only way is to examine the urine for albumin in a population, preferably through various medical camps, periodically, say, six-monthly / yearly, as in the case of UTI, so that if the disease is suspected, it can be diagnosed, and treated.

Further, the public should also be made aware of this disease, so that patients can report to the physician for timely action.

Here, prevention of sore throat and the early detection of GN are strong measures for the overall control of this disease.

End Your Speech With a Punchline!

Have you ever been to a talk and were left feeling flat – like the speaker left you wanting more? On the other hand, have you been to a presentation where the speaker left you inspired, wanting more and excited to sign up for whatever they had to offer?

I’m willing to bet that the way the speaker ended their speech made a big difference.

Beginnings and endings are important! How often have you heard a speaker that has a great opening and by the time they get to the ending they fizzle out? Speakers sometimes get to the end of their time and have no idea how to end their speech so they ramble on or just thank their audience. To be remembered, I strongly encourage you to finish your speech with a joke, a pithy phrase, a quote that you want the audience to tuck away in their mind as something memorable. Always leave the audience on an upbeat note.

One of the mistakes often made is when speakers spend all their time on the beginning of their speech and give very little attention to their ending – reverse that and you will notice the difference. Spend at least 10% of your speech time on your conclusion and tying your earlier points together. For example: with a 30 minute speech use 5 min on the opening, 15 minutes on content and 10 minutes on the wrap up and ending.

Consider some of the speakers that you have listened to – which ones do you remember the most? Usually the ones with compelling endings to their speech. What did they use to end their speech? A joke? A funny story? A memorable quote?

5 Reasons to use a Powerful Speech Ending:

  • A powerful ending sends your audience off with excitement and purpose.
  • A powerful ending is a sign to the audience that they may now applaud.
  • A powerful ending gives your DJ a clear sign to start the exit music.
  • A powerful ending keeps you top-of-mind longer.
  • A powerful ending motivates your audience to take action.

If you include a powerful call to action in your powerful ending, the audience will be running to the back of the room with their wallets out to buy your product or sign up for your program.

If you have a powerful ending, the audience will keep that in mind as they leave. Use your final words to turn your audience to your point of view and tell them what action you’d like them to take next. End your speech by using motivational words that inspire your audience to stand and applaud.

As Mark Twain said: “The difference between a word and the RIGHT word is like the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.”

Be the lightning!

The Thirty Years War – Everyone Wins As Cable, Telcos Continue to Battle

As the name implies, passive optical networks (PONs) are ways of distributing signals without any active gear. This is attractive to service providers because chucking the lasers cuts costs and makes the resulting network more reliable. Growth in PONs is but one sign that the old battles between the cable and telcos folks are just as active as ever.

Infonetics Research this week released its fourth quarter market share numbers. There is the expected jockeying between the top players. The "perennial leader" is Mitsubishi, and other key players are Fiberhome, Lucent, Motorola and Tellabs. More importantly, optical network units and optical light terminals (ONUs and OLTs) – two important elements of a PON network – were up 38 percent, which suggests a thriving sector. The report adds that Gigabit and Ethernet PON (GPON and EPON) led the way and that overall PON manufacturing was stable. This is good news in a bad economy and following a quarter in which the category expired by 24 percent. The report's other highlights carry similarly good news for the category.

PONs are a main architecture for phone companies in the United States. The reality is that small telcos are actively deploying fiber systems, although most of the public goes to the massive Verizon FiOS and AT & T U-Verse projects. This week, those smaller companies were in the news as Occam Networks announced three deals. The vendor said that two Kentucky cooperatives – Peoples Rural Telephone and Ballard Telephone – are deploying its Broadband Loop Carrier 6322 GPON OLT and ON 2442 GPON Triple Play Gateway optical network terminals. Nex-Tech, a telephone company in Hayes, Kansas, will add to its Occam products, although the release was not as specific on what the company is adding.

The cable operators are heading to PON architectures as well. Getting to that point is a different proposition, however, because of the industry's preexisting hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) architecture. The industry's goal is to limit the dislocation that would be caused by a massive switchover from radio frequency (RF) to optical transmissions. To do this, the industry is baking up a set of protocols referred to by the great acronym RFoG (RF over Fiber). The category is beginning to make news. Last month, for instance, GPON vendor Zhone Technology and RFoG vendor Alloptic announced a strategic agreement. The pact will enable Zhone to increase the amount of spectrum to cable operators, the story says.

RFOG, PONs and other exotic sounding architectures and approaches really boil down to one easy to understand equation: Both industries are struggling to migrate their infrastructures to produce more revenue, but to do so with the least possible investment and disruption. Media Experiences 2 Go, a Motorola site, reports that Time Warner Cable has issued a request for information on RFoG and that Motorola and Alloptic have a deal in place that will extend Motorola's RFoG line.

It's interesting to get the view of people close to the technologies under consideration. That's the case in this piece, which focuses on the thoughts of Rouzbeh Yassini, who is informally known as "the father of the cable modem." Yassini, speaking at the Cable Next-Gen Broadband Strategies conference last month, suggested that the third iteration of the cable industry's Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS 3.0) will enable the industry's current hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) architecture for seven or eight years, according to a recent Cable Digital News report. The sticking point, however, is the industry's chronically constrained field-to-headend "upstream" path. Options mentioned include RFoG and PON.

The cable and phone companies have been going at it tooth and nail for decades. It's great for their planning and engineering departments – not to mention vendors and a stray blogger or two. The precise nature of the technology, not the contentious dynamic, is the only thing that changes. At times, it seems that the industry with the weaker technology is facing disaster. Now, however, it looks that both industries have put enough research and thinking into their platforms that they will sustain them comfortably, no matter what the other side does.
