1. Use stop loss and take profit prices to control your trade. This allows you to place the trade and stop dealing with it. The more you deal with a trade the more it sits in your mind.

2. Just walk away – some traders place Stop Loss and Take Profit prices but then they still look at the trade to see how it's going. Why? What's the point of a Stop Loss if you're going to watch the trade? Are you really planning to interfere with it in mid-course?

3. Use low leverages – The moment you use super-high leverages you do the potential of larger profits but also of huge losses. This can certainly drive you crazy with anxiety and lead to bad trading decisions. Until you develop a killer Forex trading psychology, stick to low leverages.

4. Limit your losses to a small part of your account by using tight stop loss prices. Then you will know that in the worse case scenario, you'll be taken out of the trade with a small loss. Nothing to really worry about.

5. Do not use a method you're not sure of. Trust me, if you're going to be trading by tips, or hunches, you're going to be thinking about each trade constantly until it closes. Use a proven, reliable, and structured method and you will be a much calmer trader.

Do not neglect your psychology. Work on your mental fitness. This is a must for long term trading success.

Midnight Shiftworker Blues, Help Getting Your Sleep During the Daylight Hours

Some people claim that they were born to work the third shift. I do not have a problem believing that, but when do they get sleep? I worked midnights, only to get my foot in the door for the job, but that only rented a year, then I got the job. I could never have made a career of it though. Call me a sissy, but I'm NOT a third shift worker. There was trouble with the sleep thing right from day 1. That was over 4 years ago.

Yesterday evening, at work, (Yes, I was made for the afternoon shift) out of curiosity, I asked a few of my co-workers how they felt about the midnight shift. The replies I got were all very different.

Lady # 1 said "I loved it! I was able to scedual my life around it, and midnights were fine with me!

Lady # 2 said "It worked alright until the children were born, but after that, it became impossible.

Gentleman # 1 said, "I worked for 10 years on midnights, and I'd like to get back there, my guess is that he probably will. Guess he liked it.

But after the opinion poll, I asked each one how they got enough sleep. That was not always so easy. There were two things that we all agreed on, 1) You must unplug the telephone, and 2) The bedroom windows needed to be covered. This was not the first time that I had had the same discussion with people. I've talked about it, and asked people what they think about it before. I've also come up with the same two solutions before. Maybe it's a standard.

Even though there is nothing I can do to unplug your phone, maybe I can help you with the covering of the windows. My brother in law told me that he covered the windows with black plastic. Ugh! Lady # 2 said that she had blinds, but they did not work, so she draped bath towels over the curtain rods. Some were not willing to discuss what they had used, and I can see why after the black plastic. I personally had thrown some hand made quilts over the curtain rods, but that caused the color to fade. Not too happy about that! How ever, during that time frame, the whole while, I spent my home time painting. They started out on canvas, but I also paint on glass. Some of my paintings are on window sashes, in the panes, as though you were looking out the window. After 8 years of that, I began to stain on glass. That was when I decided that it could have been done in a bedroom window, looking very nice, as well aserving the useful purpose of taking the toilet off needing sleeping on a beautiful day when the sun is shining. You could use some dark colors in the bedroom, and it would still have one up on the black plastic!

After painting on glass, and having some of my pieces take several weeks to complete, doing a stain on the window in a simple pattern only required a few hours to do, and I had my share of putzing around during the process! It does not take an artist to do this, only an easy pattern, and some glass paint, (very inexpensive) and a couple of brushes. Problem solved!

Your Aching Back – Common Causes and Treatment

Back pain is not an uncommon complaint. In fact, four out of five adults will experience symptoms of lower back pain at least once in their lifetime. A complex structure, the back is made up of 33 vertebrae, more than 30 muscles, ligaments, multiple joints, and inter-vertebrae dics. With all of those muscles, joints, and discs, it’s not surprising there are many ways in which these elements can become injured or affected.

Muscular strain is the most common cause of back pain. When an unexpected force, twist, or pull is applied to one or several muscles in the back, tears occur in the muscle. These muscle tears cause the pain felt in the back. Ligamentous sprains, or sprains to the ligaments is another common cause of back pain. This occurs when the back ligaments are stretched beyond their limit. These sprains can often coincide with muscular strains.

When the spinal nerves in the back are compressed at the point where they exit the spinal column, the result is a herniated disc. Repetitive vibratory motion, such as experienced by truck drivers or machine users, often leads to this condition. A sudden heavy loading of the back, as occurs with improper lifting, can also cause a herniated disc. Because the condition affects the nerve endings, a radicular type of back pain is felt at the site of injury, as well as along the course of the affected nerve. Sciatica, a condition resulting from the irritation of the sciatica nerve is also a type of radicular pain. As the largest nerve in the body, it runs from the lumbar spinal cord in the low back and extends through the buttock area to send nerve endings down the lower limb.

Another cause of back pain, spinal stenosis occurs more commonly in adults over 50 years old. The term refers to a narrowing of the spinal canal. Spinal stenosis has numerous causes including thickened ligaments along the spinal canal, bony spurs, and enlarged joint cartilage from arthritic changes. In many cases, the pain of this condition is made worse with extended periods of weight bearing or walking. Surgery is sometimes required to correct the disorder.

As with spinal stenosis, osteoporosis affects the joints in the spine and is also more common in people over 50 years of age. Considered a degenerative joint diseases, over time the cartilage begins to degenerate in the discs between the vertebrae and the joints in the spine. Without a cartilaginous cushion, the bones begin to rub against each other, which results in inflammation, swelling and stiffness. As the condition progresses, bone spurs develop and ligaments become thick, both of which result in spinal stenosis.

A common cause of back especially in women, osteoporosis is a disease characterized by progressive loss of bone density. As the bone tissue begins to thin, it becomes more susceptible to fractures or broken bones. Bones of the spine are especially affected with osteoporosis. Injury from falls and lifting heavy objects can result in painful vertebral compression fractures.

Fibromyalgia is also a common cause of chronic back pain. The rheumatic condition is characterized by widespread soft tissue pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and the presence of evenly distributed areas of tenderness. A presence of widespread pain and tenderness for at least three months in 11 or more of the 18 designated tender point sites is required in diagnosing this disorder.

Prevention is the first line of defense when it comes to protecting your back from injury. Injury prevention includes everything from proper seat positioning at work to stretching before performing strenuous exercises. Lower back stretches, which can be recommended by a physician or physical therapist, are a quick and effective way to keep the back muscles and joints limber. Performing simple stretches can help prevent back pain or provide pain relief from present back aches.

Strengthening exercises help to build strong muscles which provide joint stability. These exercises are also important after sustaining injuries that require resting affected muscles. Especially in cases of post-operative recovery, discomfort after surgery often leads to decreased use of the affected area which leads to stiffness and weakness. Cardiovascular Toxicity (QT Prolongation) In Drug Development Overview

Nobody working in drug development can fail to be aware of the issue that is QT prolongation, however some people are finding that they need a little more information if they are going to tackle and plan for it within their drug development programs.

There are three main ways that cardiovascular toxicity can present itself:

  1. Changes to heart rate
  2. Changes to conductivity within the heart
  3. Changes to the repolarization of the heart (QT prolongation)

It is this QT prolongation that is obviously the hottest issue and is a consequence of impacting the repolarization of the cardiomyocytes. The pathway is the hERG channels are blocked, which increased the action potential of the cells in the heart, which in turn causes the QT prolongation.

This problem has been seen in a large number of drugs and has impacted on a great many drug development programs, from complete removal of a drug from the market, to prescribing restrictions, delays in approval and a huge number of drugs killed at an early stage . It is also worth noting that there is not a pattern to those drugs affected and it appears to affect a large number of different drugs.

But what can be done to manage this risk? Well there are a wide variety of early detection screens, In-vitro, Ex-vivo, and In-vivo .

The most common In-vitro study is the Patch Clamp – this is actually the gold standard study and involves measuring the current through the hERG channel (Ikr Chanel) to give an IC50 for the drug, this IC50 will give you an indication if you are going to see effects at the therapeutic dose levels. Whilst this is the gold standard it is not a test that lends itself well to high throughput screening.

Another test is the hERG binding assay, this is a competitive assay that tests your drug against a radio labeled standard, this is a good test which can be used in high throughput screening, and is well correlated to the Patch Clamp test.

Another is the Rubidium Flux assay, where you load the cells with rubidium add your compound and KCl, this allows you to measure the rubidium excreted from the cell and from this judge hERG channel activity. This once again lends itself to even fast screening but there is some drop off in relation to the gold standard.

The final test is the membrane potential dye test, where cells are loaded with dye and as the hERG channel functions dye is flushed from the cell, this is the fastest test but least accurate.

The tests most commonly used are the hERG binding assay and Rubidium flux tests

In terms of Exvivo models the most popular are pukinji fiber tests and isolated heart tests, these whole tissue and whole organ tests are expensive but do provide a lot more information on what is going on and provide a greater insight.

In-vivo tests include dogs, non-human-primates, and pigs, rodents are not a good model for the human heart and should not be used. Again the expense of these models is made up for by the excellent data they provide. The studies are generally conducted in conscious animals which are remotely monitored, single dose cross over study designs are used, time and duration of effect is looked for and compared with systemic drug levels. Heart rate, ECG, Blood Pressure, Body Temperature, and activity levels are all monitored.

One of the most important things to look at is left ventricular pressure as this gives the greatest insight into normal function, Charles Rivers have done a great deal of work to validate this with Atenolo and Pimobedam. With both drugs systolic BP, diastolic BP and heart rate retained the same but changes in left ventricular pressure alluded to issues that needed to be addressed.

There are two guidelines that need to be referred to when planning these studies ICH57A (general safety pharmacology) and ICH57B (Specific QT prolongation regulations).

When assessing the Pre-clinical it is important to take a good look at the data and consider the following; what was actually observed as the assays are not 100% effective, any small flags will impact on clinical trial design, how will the expected PK / PD profiles affect on the results, will you expect patients to get into affected dose levels?

Before preceding human trials there are guidelines that need to be considered ICH E14 which gives instruction on the evaluation of QT prolongation in man, in some regions its now compulsory, but in others you can arguably away from it with pre-clinical data. In the clinic QT prolongation is tested in healthy volunteers at the therapeutic doses and multiples thereof, metabolic inhibiting may be needed to raise drug levels levels high enough, positive controls are also used (moxifloxacin).

Where QT prolongation is seen following the guidelines are provided:

  • 6-10 msec unlikely risk
  • > 10 msec possible risk

These regulations are the same for cardiovascular drugs as for other therapy areas.

Another important thing to consider is that QT prolongation is not an issue that affects biologicals, as demonstrated by Vergas, Boss et al. 2008 (J Pharmacol and Tox Method 58; 72-76)

The Secret of Personal Growth

A full life is a good life. We fill our schedules with commitments and improvement, work and play. We would like all our activities to be fulfilling but even when they are not we tend to keep them anyway. Better a full life than not. We rather pity those who have not yet found a way of filling their minds.

For the past eleven years, a strip of my garden had been left to itself. It always grows a great crop of nettles and hogweed. Each winter it died back and then repeated the performance each spring.

Right from the beginning of this year I have mowed the area regularly. There are still some nettles to be seen but, amazingly, growing alongside is a new range of plants that were not there before. Simply cutting the growth every few weeks has changed the harvest.

There is a clear analogy here with the general observation on life – 'if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got'. For a different exit, change what you do and enjoy what flowers.

If we want to grow beyond where we are now, both personally and professionally, we need to make room.

Think of a forest planted for timber. The saplings are first positioned near each other to encourage them to grow straight. After a period of a few years, the forester carries out thinning when some trees are filled to make room for the others to develop. At interviews during the life of the trees, more thinning will take place to allow the forest to reach full maturity.

However busy and successful we are, we can create some space, a degree of emptiness for new growth. Pruning cuts down competitiveness effects that smother fresh shoots. When we have the courage to prune, the pile of 'cuttings' are not seen as 'what might have been', but the inspiring step towards 'what can be'.

Why is the Knock Out Rose So Popular?

The knock out rose is the most popular rose in North America. This rose was bred by William Radler and 250,000 were sold in 2000, the very first year it was introduced. It was also an All American Award winner that year. Since then, the rose has done nothing but grow in popularity, so much so that some gardeners complain the older types of roses are being totally ignored in favor of knockouts.

There are now seven different knockouts which come in several colors and double as well as single blossoms. Each one has several characteristics which were specifically bred into the rose by Radler, whose goal was to make a rose that needed very little maintenance.

Many people think Radler bred this shrub rose so that beginners would have an easier time successfully getting into rose gardening. But that was not his first goal. He bred the knockout roses so that he could grow more and more roses. Normally, roses do require a lot of care. When you have several hundred of them, it takes a huge amount of time to keep up with their needs. The less one-on-one care a rose needs, the more of them you can plant each year.

Knockouts need very little care compared to other species of roses. Let's take a look at some of their advantages:

No demanding soil requirements Knock out roses like well-drained soil the best but that does not mean they will not grow in other types of soils. Make an effort to prepare the soil well when you plant them, and you should have no trouble in getting these roses to thrive.

Choose a good location with at least 4-5 hours of sun per day and a place that is not overly wet. Add 2 inches of compost and some dried manure to the soil when you prepare it for planting.

Pest and disease resistance William Radler bred his knockout species to be exceptionally resistant to diseases and pests. This does not mean your roses will never ever encounter a disease or pest. It means that they are more resistant than any other rose on the market. Knockouts deter pests, even Japanese beetles, who can make a mess of a rose plant in no time.

This landscape rose was also bred to deter blackspot, a problem which faces roses in areas where it is humid, particularly along the Southern and Eastern coast of the United States. With blackspot, the leaves of the rose plant really do develop spots that are round and black.

As this disease spreads from one plant to another, the affected leaves turn yellow and die off. With roses other than knockouts, it takes weekly spraying to keep them free of this and other diseases. And if you do spray with pesticides, you release dangerous chemicals into the environment.

Hardy in cold and heat Perhaps the biggest advantage of the knockout roses is their ability to successfully bloom in areas of severe cold and high heat. Those gardeners who live in the coldest regions, such as USDA zones 4 and 5, or in super hot southern locations, can grow these roses without any kind of bad outcome. They will come back year after year.

Just remember to mulch your knockouts in the summer to keep the ground cool and moist, and in the winter to keep the roots from dying. Knockouts are bred to grow in just about every locale and it does not take a lot of care and maintenance to keep them looking like winners. The best part is they will bloom every 5 to 6 weeks, putting on quite a colorful show from spring to fall.

When blood levels of calcium drop, parathyroid hormone is released and stimulates the kidneys to produce 1,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol), the active form. This causes calcium to move out of bones into the blood, increases calcium absorption from foods and reduces losses in urine to ensure blood levels of calcium are adequate for normal heart, muscle and nerve function. When blood levels of calcium are restored, bone is rebuilt. A low calcium intake over time causes hyperparathyroidism and weakens bones. Older people absorb less dietary calcium because their intestines are no longer as responsive to active vitamin D and this can be compensated for by increased calcium intake and maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a steroid-derived hormone that is made naturally in the skin when exposed to solar ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation of 290-315 nm wavelength, which is within the spectrum that causes sunburn. The precursor is a cholesterol metabolite, 7-dehydrocholesterol, that is converted to previtamin D3, which then undergo thermal isomerisation to form cholecalciferol. It is transported to the liver, where it is converted to 25-dihydroxychocalcalciferol, which is then converted to calcitriol in the kidneys by the action of parathyroid hormone.

During winter in higher latitudes, the sun is too weak to make vitamin D effectively and the body rests on stores built up over summer. Vitamin D deficiency is becoming more common because exposure to sunlight is restricted by excessive clothing, sunscreen use and indoor lifestyles. Having a dark skin color reduces skin synthesis and vitamin D metabolism is impaired by aging.

Understanding and Identifying Procrastination

In one of my most recent shows on Money Matters Radio, I discussed procrastination with my co-host June Knight. I've had a lot of response to the subject, so I wanted to share more to help those in sales.

First things first, what are the effects of procrastination? In our Sandler Training we've identified four:

1. It blocks emotional growth. You are starting to deteriorate; nothing is happening. We all know that we are growing or deteriorating. Procrastination is an attempt to stand still and that is not possible.

2. It leads to multiple failures. In other words, you get angry at yourself and feel envy, rage, bitterness and hopelessness. By procrastinating, we are really doing nothing, which means we are trying to hold on to the status quo. As procrastination continues, the failures add to more failures. The effect is paralysis.

3. It can cause Over-Adaption. Over adaption is another dimension of the "Mr. Nice Guy" Muddle. Salespeople procrastinate because of fear, conditioning and not knowing a better way.

4. Procrastination can lead to impulse decisions; decisions that are flawed because they are not well thought out. Impulsiveness is just an attempt to break inertia. A good decision involves calculation of risk / results, reflection of effects and consideration of resources. Impulse is an act that ignores these concerns. Often, it is a "knee jerk" reaction to attempt to do something.

So how can we identify procrastination? In our Sandler No Guts, No Gain! program we've identified several ways:

1. The same tactic is used all the time! You use a repetitive action to consistently avoid doing something. Have you ever met someone who always has a story as to why they were late to work, yet they are late frequently?

2. No change occurs. You are still where you were when you started. Have you ever known someone that keeps talking about prospecting larger accounts and yet they have not?

3. No Conclusion is reached. Have you ever met someone that has a lot of "think it overs"?

4. Always waiting for something. Have you ever met someone that annoys you because they do not take action, yet are waiting till "things turn around" and continue complain about their state of affairs.

Overcoming procrastination requires effective decision making. Effective decision making does a number of things for us. It increases our self-esteem. You can not help it, when you make effective decisions, you own more of yourself. In other words you gain from the investment in yourself!

Effective decision making requires that you look at it as a "decision tree". There is not one decision to get us to "where we want to go", but multiple decisions. And if you make a wrong decision, learn a lesson, but do not "beat yourself up" and do not stop – keep moving and make another decision.

Effective decision making will break inhibitions and break paralysis. Making decisions allows you to move forward which is the opposite of the effects of procrastination. Procrastination can lead to paralysis.

Effective decision making requires that we stay focused and not get drawn off path. Looking back on decisions tends to create remorse because we idealize the conditions of the past. Looking back can create unhappiness. We are in the present and we must deal with it in the most effective manner.

People that have learned what procrastination "looks like", know how to exceed it and make thought out decisions are some of the most effective sales people in the world!

Lumbar Herniated Disc Treatments

The spine is made up of a series of bones connecting to each other commonly known as the vertebrae. Normally, the physician will recommend non-surgical options to treat the lumbar herniated disc such as a short period period, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs, physical therapy, exercises, and injection therapy.

Non-surgical treatments aim to reduce disc and nerve irritation and improve the patient's physical condition in order to protect the patient's spinal and enhance general function. An organized treatment and care program combining a number of the aforementioned treatments is effective in treating the majority of lumbar herniated disc patients.

After observing the recommended period of non-surgical treatment, if the pain persist persists with the lumbar herniated disc, and hinders the patients from normal activities even after the completion of non-operative treatments, then the physician may recommend surgery as a last resort.

It is important to note that the patient may not regain complete leg strength with surgery but it can serve to prevent further weakness in the legs as well as relieve pain. In fact, surgical treatment is typically recommended in order to treat leg pain but it is not as successful as relief for the back pain itself.

After surgery, you should rely on your doctor's advice in terms of which activities are suitable. Obviously this will depend on the severity of the lumbar herniated disc The first step after surgery is to take basic steps to see if there are any lingering pain issues. In most cases patients are able to go home on the same day or within 24 hours of the lumbar herniated disc surgery. The following activities should be avoided by patients following the surgery: bending forward, lifting heavy objects, sitting for a prolonged time and driving. It is advisable to follow a rehabilitation program recommended by your physician or hospital. You doctor or physician will be able to assist in determining which exercises and rehabilitation methods will be most effective in decreasing the chance of the lumbar herniated disc returning.
