Most trainers and strength coaches all over the world use a few strength building exercises, the squat, the dead lift, the power clean for over all body power. These are great strength builders, but how effective are they really? And do they promise all the hype of real strength building?

I will tell you there is a better way of building overall body strength that will transfer to all athletic sports and everyday life. It's an exercise that our bodies are made for. You do not need a lot of weight for a total over all body workout.

If you look and think how the body has been used for centuries you will see that some things modern day trainers look at as full body workouts are damaging to the body.

The squat is considered the "King of exercises" but how often do you really need to put 300lbs on or shoulder in real life and stand up? The fact is that if you ever did need to stand up with 300lbs the chances are you would fail. Why? Because, in the real world 300 lbs that you are lifting would never be balanced, it would be awkward and most men that could squat 300lbs would have a tough time standing up with 200 lbs on their shoulders.

Squatting is big in football, for instance a lineman is always coming out of a squat, there is more pushing than anything else. The pushing will require overall body strength and a big part is the core and not one of the 3 exercises I mentioned will strengthen the core to a point of real function.

Same goes with the dead lift, deadlift 400lbs now grab a 250lb rock and lift it up. The rock is a lot lighter but there is no nice bar to grab your body needs to call on muscle memory to lift something compact, awkward with a whole different body dynamic.

The power clean is another story, most people do not do it right. Most people are doing it like an explosive reverse curl. Olympic style weight lifters do this correctly most others do not.

The body does not know whether you are lifting sandbags, logs, weights, digging ditches or moving furniture it's all weight.

But the one thing you can do to build a functional strong body from head to toe is the simple method of carrying and carrying an unbalanced object for time or distance up hill and downhill. I say it will build strength from head to toe because carrying will strengthen the entire body and the core muscles that are required in all sports and in everything else that will need total body strength and the head meaning it takes mental toughness to carry a weight for time or a predetermined distance.

The great thing is a weight as little as 40 or 50lbs will enough for most men try carrying a 50lb sand bag, rock, log for a m mile or more switching the object from shoulder to shoulder. I like to use a 70 or 100lb heavy bag for walking hills and climbing steps and walking wooded trails. And if you want to build heavily muscled traps and shoulders try bearing and carrying and let me know how them shoulders and traps feel.

Shouldering and carrying an awkward object should be a big part of any strength training program. Balanced objects fool you into thinking you are stronger than you actually are. Just like bodyweight exercises that require more muscles to do pushups than it does to do bench presses.

Grandpa Prayed

The children hopped out of the cars and ran toward the house; they could not wait to see Grandpa Langley. Regardless of their age, each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren would listen to him tell stories of his childhood and life as a young man in a world foreign to them. Even the teens in their difficult years found reason to consider his words – there was something about him that drew young people in, opened their hearts, and made his love entrance.

New Years Day has always been as much a family celebration as Christmas. To our family, Christmas is a celebration of the birth and gift of Jesus Christ; New Years has always been a celebration of new beginnings and old traditions only made possible through Christ.

Every year, away from the unrivaled taste of Grandma Langley's cooking, the family came to hear the story Grandpa would share. Immediately after dinner, after the last dish was put away, the entire family would put on their coats and scarves and take a walk to the cabin out back, down by the river … the cabin where Grandpa grew up. The stove had been lit earlier in the day so the scent of burning wood filled the one room house. Folding chairs were arranged around an old hand-carved rocking chair located in front of the fireplace; a small table with an old oil lamp sat close by. Grandpa took the place of honor in the center as everyone found a seat close enough to their beloved older to hear his traditional New Year's Story.

Last year, Grandpa appeared to be struggling; the walk to the cabin took a toll on him we had not noticed in the previous years. Grandma reassured us that he was fine, just a touch of bronchitis lingering from the month before.

Grandma and a few of the older girls passed out hot chocolate and homemade cookies while Grandpa helped the little ones find a place to sit. We always wonder how the toddlers knew to sit so still; we figured it was the dim lights and the smell of the firewood that kept them calm.

As soon as everyone was listed, Grandpa signified his readiness by clearing his throat. His voice was gruff and now it began to quiver due to his old age, but his words … oh how he spoke them, such an incredible man!

"Children, Grandchildren, and Great-Grandchildren. There is a story that must be told and into your ears and hearts it is spoken. Listen, and hear the heart of this old man."

He always began his stories the same way, even if he had stopped there we would have experienced his heart and passion for his family. His words, spoken with such reverence and authority, almost like the words were from the portals of heaven itself.

"Many years ago our family was not as it is now. We lived in a time when there were no televisions, no radios, no computers. There were no cars, no busses, no subways. the land-this land, where we live today. The harvest was sparse this year; the cattle were lean and underfed. But such a man as he was, his family never went without food .. He worked hard! Not like we work today, but his hands were calloused from the work of a farmer, hand on the plow and the hoe, and the reins of the mules. "

"My father never missed a day of work when he was sick. family to feed. He was a good man who feared God. "

"One day he came in for lunch and after he washed up in the basin you see in the corner there, he called me to him and sat me on his knee in this very same chair. me what I will tell you know. Everyone in the cabin moved in close to Grandpa Langley. Even the little ones stand quietly as he prayed. Those who understand will testify to this day that their lives changed that night Grandpa prayed. There was a divine departure from the heart of a wise and Godly man who loved his family, but loved God in greater measure … his life proved it.

Grandpa Langley passed away that New Years night in his sleep … we miss him terribly.

This will be the first New Years Day at the old homestead without that dear precious man, but his words of wisdom will never be forgotten. This year my husband, his oldest son, will carry on the tradition and one day our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will talk of the day when their Grandpa prayed.

Best Laboratory Tests For Diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus

History and physical examination are most important tools for diagnosing diabetes Mellitus, however to confirm diagnosis one should follow following laboratory tests.

Urine sugar test

Urine ketones test

OGTT-Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, (also called glucose challenge test)

Blood glucose tests

FPG-Fasting plasma glucose Test

Random plasma glucose Test

Tests for ongoing monitoring of diabetes control:
HbA1c blood test – an average blood sugar measure over about 3 months.
Fructosamine blood test – an average blood sugar measure over about 2 weeks

It is not necessary that one should have all the tests given in above list, but it is necessary to diagnose your disease if you want best treatment for your illness.

How frequently a person must check his sugar level is the decision of your doctor. It mainly depends upon patients age and number of risk factors like blood pressure, higher cholesterol or smoking. If you are above 45 years then you should have your blood sugar level after every 3 years. Even if you are below 45 years and have one or more risk factors then you should also check your blood sugar level repeatedly.

A-Urine sample for sugar and Ketones:
You may have your urine analysis for sugar or ketones which are produced by breakdown of fat and muscle cells to diagnoseose but you should keep in mind that if you are having positive urine test for sugar then it is not necessary that you are suffering from diabetes because there are other conditions as well which also cause sugar to appear in urine.

B-THE FASTING BLOOD GLUCOSE (SUGAR) TEST
For diagnosing Diabetes Mellitus one must have this test because it is best, easy and comfortable to perform. You should have overnight fast (at least 8 hours) before performing this test. If fasting blood glucose is below 100mg / dl, then you do not have diabetes. Between 100mg / dl to 125mg / dl is called a Pre-diabetes or Impaired fast glucose condition. If fasting blood glucose is above 126mg / dl on more than two occasions then you are suffering from diabetes.

C-RANDOM (NON-FASTING) BLOOD GLUCOSE TEST
It is also a good test for diagnosing diabetes. In this test we take sample of blood shortly after taking a meal and then check glucose level in blood. If this level is above 200mg / dl, then there are many chances that you are suffering from diabetes. But diagnosis should be confirmed the very next day by fasting blood glucose or by glucose tolerance test

D-ORAL GLUCOSE TOLERANCE TEST (OGTT):
Although this test is not commonly used these days but it is still a gold standard for diagnosing diabetes. For diagnosing gestational diabetes this is best test.

Instructions for OGTT:
This is test for a person who is in good health and have no other illness.
Person should be normally active and not bed ridden.
Person is not taking anti diabetic drugs or any drug which alters blood sugar level.
Before test, person should eat high carbohydrate diet for three days.
No alcoholic beverages.
On test day one should not smoke or take coffee.

Glucose Tolerance Test Procedure:
First normal blood glucose is tested. Then person drinks 75gm of glucose, for pregnant woman dose of glucose is 100 gm. Then blood samples are taken at particular intervals for measuring blood glucose level.Blood glucose level is measured five times over a period of 3 hours. In simple words, in normal person, this blood sugar level gets higher value by taking 75gm of glucose, however it falls down quickly, but in person having diabetes the blood sugar level rises higher than normal but does not come down quickly. If a person has fasting blood glucose above 140mg / dl and 2 hours value after 75gm of oral glucose greater than 200mg / dl and considered as diabetics. If 2 hours blood glucose value between 140-200mg / dl is labeled as Pre-diabetic condition or impaired fast glucose. During pregnancy, 2 hours blood glucose value between 140-200mg / dl is treated as a case of diabetes.

OTHER TESTS
Glycosylated haemoglobin Test or HB A1 Test:
Very important test which tells you how good you are in controlling your blood sugar. It shows your blood sugar control during the past 2 to 3 months. For normal individuals, a good hemoglobin A-1-c is 7 percent.

Intravenous GTT:
This test is performed in individuals who have intestinal disease or malabsorption.

Extended GTT:
In this the oral Glucose Tolerance Test is extended to 3-4 hours rather than 2 hours, for appearance of symptoms of hyperglycaemia.

In short if your fasting blood glucose is more than 126mg / dl on two or more days, or your random blood glucose is above 200mg / dl or your oral glucose tolerance test is positive ie 2 hours blood glucose value between above 200mg / dl after 75gm of glucose, then you are suffering from Diabetes Mellitus.
