How to Prevent Adolescence Obesity

Adolescence Obesity – All Time High

Two-thirds of all Americans are either overweight or obese. Forty-eight percent of people in Europe are overweight. In the United States unemployment obesity is between 16 percent and 33 percent. We are a mighty nation capable of blowing away our enemies with sophisticated weaponry built by man. Yet, we continue to lose the obesity epidemic that rages in our children.

Obesity – The Perpetual Cycle

The cause of childhood obesity is very treatable. Lack of healthy diet and exercise are the main culprits. Obesity is responsible for 325,000 deaths annually. In 2003 obesity cost $ 75 billion dollars because of its long, expensive treatment.

In addition, adolescence and children who are overweight tend to grow into overweight adults. The reason the cycle of obesity continues is because they have not learned to break the pattern of poor dietary habits.

You Can Change Your Eating Habits

Anyone can change no matter what age. Good dietary habits should be started at the earliest age and continued through life. In addition, good dietary habits lead to healthy weight loss and maintenance.

Here Are 10 Tips:

1. Eating Breakfast – Adolescence who skip breakfast not only have poor concentration, but end up ravenously hungry later, sabotaging any efforts to make healthy food choices.

2. Incorporate Fruit and Vegetables – Studies show that consuming 5-8 serving of fruit per day keeps you fuller for longer periods of time. Buy fresh cut fruit. They are convenient to pack for your child to take to school.

3. Encourage Exercise – Adolescence nowdays have been spoiled by the age of technology. No longer do they have to walk to the video store to rent videos. Everything is handed to them. Try scheduling some sort of physical activity with your adolescent like hiking, playing basketball, or tennis.

4. Limit the time your child spends on computers and watching television.

5. Learn portion control. Buy measuring cups and measuring spoons and use them at every meal until you get so familiar with measurements, you can eyeball a 4 oz piece of fish.

6. Cut out candy and other sugary foods. Sugar makes you fat.

7. Stop deep frying your food. Broil or stir fry your food.

8. Instead of giving your pre-teen full-fat versions of dairy products, have them try the lighter versions such as 2% milk instead of whole milk or fat-free yogurt.

9. Pay for a gym membership. Some people can exercise in their home and others need structure. It is worth the money you invest in a gym to enable your adolescent to exercise.

10. No late night snacks. Late night snacks do not get a chance to digest properly and simply make you put on weight.

Shift your mind as to what it means to eat healthfully. While a lot of healthy foods are an accepted taste, many of them are delicious once you have given them a fair try.

Be A Positive Role Model

You must be a positive role model yourself to your adolescent if you expect him or her to practice healthy eating habits. Eat fresh salad with protein at meals. Go light on the dressing.

When your child comes home from school, it is recommended that you have a bowl of fruit out on the counter instead of cookies so that when your child comes home, he or she can just pick a fruit to eat.

Following these 10 tips will go a long way in treating and preventing discrimination obesity.

Your Hot List to the "Greenest" Paraben Free Facial Moisturizers and Hand Creams

Did you know having dry skin is high on the list of what makes your skin age? To hydrate your skin, a paraben free product can help. You may have to look hard for paraben free facial moisturizers, but the time and effort will be well worth it. When you find a product that's pure and made with the highest amount of active quality ingredients you will be in luck. Many new products are organic, fairly traded and include paraben free hand cream and makeup.

Lately, the trendy topic of green living has produced a number of new products. But that does not mean they will be paraben free. That's something extra you must be on the lookout for. First of all a good moisturizer product will do everything from adding moisturizing, to sealing in the moisture you already have in your skin. Some even help your skin produce more moisture. Paraben free facial moisturizers are a gentle way to nourish your skin. When you use products made with preservatives like parabens you can actually clog your pores, which can lead to dry skin. Now that's really defeating the purposed is not it?

Just look at some of the latest natural skincare products being used and you can see why people are looking parabens. Some of the hot green products on the market include solutions made with bearberry. It's a flowering shrub that flourishes through the United States and is quickly emerging as a popular skin toner and brightener. And the goodness all starts in the leaves of this plant where something called arbutin is found. Arbutin is an offshoot of the skin lightener hydroquinone.

Like the previous mention product, you should embrace natural ingredients and steer clear of the heavy perfumed moisturizers on the market. Some skincare companies are searching far and wide to find solutions. Case in point: Acai. The little Brazilian berry offers big anti-aging benefits. It's a good ingredient being added to the latest paraben free facial moisturizers. Acai berries are rich in emollients such as essential fatty acids and phyto-sterols that help retain moisture and give the skin's surface strength.

The same process explored above holds true for your hands, as well. But you need to take more stringent steps to protect your hands. In fact, according to dermatologists your hands are not only susceptible to the first signs of aging, but very often even faster than your face. The reason that occurs is that the skin on the back of your hand is much thinner than the skin on your face. In turn, it is much more open to aging and wrinkling.

To protect the skin on your hands and nourish them at a higher level, a paraben free hand cream can help. An age-defense body lotion or hand cream made with mineral oils and no heavy parabens are being made by quality cosmetic companies. Take the time to find these products to live a greener life.

Cure Athlete Foot – And Let Your Feet Feel Free

Just as fungus lives on the bark and wood of dead tree, so certain types of fungus may also live on the surface of skin especially in the most areas of the body. In certain types of illness, such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis fungus may attack living tissues. However, this does not occur in healthy people. Fungus is found in a wide variety of forms causing many different conditions, so how do we cure athele foot?

Athlete's foot is a form of ringworms of the feet. It is particularly common in warmer climates, and in those whose feet are constantly wet because of excessive sweating. When the disease is present over long periods of time, the toenails may become thickened.

The athletes foot fungus is the same fungus that causes onychomycosis, or toenail fungal infections. In reality, there is not just one fungus that can do this, though a couple of species account for most infections. A group of fungi, collectively known as dermatophytes, cause fungal infection of the hair, nails, and skin.

To assist cure athele foot, bathe the feet thoroughly twice daily, dry them well, and rub away the loosened dead skin. Next, apply a suitable dusting powder containing zinc stearate or a powder containing a mixture of equal parts of zinc oxide, zinc stearate, and talcum powder. Wear light, airy shoes, especially during warm weather. Many patients benefit by going barefoot. For more severe infections, use hot foot soaks of potassium permanganate solution. Whitfield's ointment applied daily has proved effective, especially for infection between the toes.

The athlete's foot fungus will probably clear up much faster than the nail infection because the skin infection is superb and the treatment easily contacts the fungus there. To get rid of both types of foot fungus, however, you will have to keep up the treatment until the nails look good as well. Nail fungal infections are notorious for the length of time they take to resolve. If your athlete's foot fungus is gone and there is any sign of improvement in the nails, the treatment is working. Keep it up and you will ever succeed in your mission to cure athele foot.

What Are The Types Of Depression?

Almost everyone experiences some form of depression. Simply put, depression elicits feelings of sadness, worthless, and hopelessness. Depressed individuals are often found to have negative views of things around them. Feelings of guilt may also come with depression.

In many cases, depression requires no medical treatment. Individuals feel sad for one reason or another, but the feeling usually goes away after a few days. In some cases, the feeling of sadness can become so much that it already interferences with one's health and state of mind. Depression of this form has to be properly managed to eliminate or reduce health risks and suicidal tendencies.

Types of Depression

There are at least 10 different types of depression that you need to be aware of:

Major Depression . Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, major depression is the type wherey the affected individual is in a state of gloom for most of the day for a couple of weeks at the very least. Common to individuals with this disorder are the following signs and symptoms:

  • Lack of interest in doing daily tasks.
  • Loss of appetite or overeating
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Insomnia or oversleeping
  • Fatigue or lack of energy
  • Loss of focus and concentration
  • Inability to make decisions
  • Suicidal thoughts

Dysthymia . Dysthymia or dysthmic disorder is depression of the chronic type. Individuals with dysthymia are said to be in and out of depression for a period of two years, accompanied by the following signs and symptoms:

  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Eating problems (decreased or increased appetite)
  • Lack of energy
  • Low self-esteem
  • Loss of focus and concentration
  • Inability to make decisions

Manic Depression ( Manic-Depressive Disorder or Bipolar Disorder). Individuals with manic depression have manic episodes in one instance and may or may not have depressed episodes. Manic-depressive individuals appear to be highly irritable for a week or so. Their self-esteem is so great that they may feel as if they are the most important people in the world. Individuals with this disorder:

  • Have an inflating ego.
  • They are hyperactive and may not have the time to sleep anymore.
  • Talk nonstop.
  • Get distracted easily.
  • Have an increased interest in social and work activities.
  • Are engaged in risky habits, such as irresponsible sex and shopping beyond one's limits

Seasonal Affective Disorder . Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD is a major depression that occurs during a specific season, such as fall or winter, for instance.

Post Partum Depression. It typically occurs within a month after giving birth.

Atypical Depression. This type is similar to a major depressive disorder or dysthymia but which comes with a temporary improvement in one's mood after experiencing something nice and beautiful.

Endogenous Depression. It occurs with no apparent reason. One simply feels "out of it".

Situational Depression. This type is thought about by circumstances such as death of a loved one, loss of job or broken relationship. It does not last for more than 6 months.

Psychotic Depression. This kind is major depression than comes with hallucinations and delusions. When someone who is diagnosed with major depression appears to hear voices, you can be almost certain that person is entering the state of psychotic stage.

Catatonic Depression. It is a subtype of Major Depression characterized by lack of or appropriate and bizarre voluntary movements. Catatonics meaninglessly repeat movements or words.

Treatment Options

Treatment options will vary greatly depending on the type of depression to be treated. A combination of psychotherapy and medications is usually recommended, and in more severe cases, ECT or shock therapy may be necessary. Treatment will also involve controlling the signs and symptoms to prevent them from posing major health risks.

Anxiety Panic Attacks Caused by Malfunction in the Inner Ear – Motion and Visual Related Phobias!

The inner-ear processes all motion-related information. If it is impaired, you may be hypersensitive to horizontal motion, vertical motion, clockwise motion, counterclockwise motion, or any combination of the above.

Depending on what types of motion you are sensitive to, and your degree of sensitivity to each, the movement of a boat, plane, car, elevator, escalator, or even a rocking chair can provoke any or all of the following symptoms:

o Anxiety, and related symptoms

o Dizziness

o Light-headedness

o Nausea

o Vomiting

o Retching

If your anxiety is severe or uncontrollable, phobias may result.

Motion-Related Phobias: An Example

Chris has a motion-related fear of flying. Notice how his fear is specifically related to horizontal motion sensitivity:

“I’ve only been on an airplane once. That was enough. It was during takeoff. The plane started picking up speed, and suddenly I was pinned to the back of my seat. I couldn’t move. I could barely breathe. My stomach was inside out. It was as if I had lost control of my body… like I was having some kind of seizure. As soon as the plane stabilized I felt a little better, so I started drinking. I don’t remember much after that.”

An inner-ear dysfunction can also result in motion insensitivity. Individuals with this problem need to be in motion and become anxious when they are stuck, trapped, tied down, or unable to move literally or symbolically. This motion-related claustrophobic anxiety can result in a wide variety of phobias.

Some individuals have the worst of both worlds. They are hypersensitive to some forms of motion and hyposensitive to others. These individuals often suffer from numerous motion-related phobias.

The inner-ear system processes all visual information. If this system is impaired, you may be hypersensitive to bright lights, fluorescent lights-even certain colors. Any or all of these may provoke anxiety.

A wide variety of visual distractions can also provoke anxiety, including: flickering lights, blurred images, the dark, and various hypnotic patterns as tiled floors, moving cars, oncoming headlights, crowds, wallpaper patterns, food displays, etc.

If visually triggered anxiety is severe or uncontrollable, various phobias may develop, including: fear of the dark, fear of bright lights, fear of crowds, fear of supermarkets, fear of driving, etc.

A Visual Tracking Problem:

Sensitivity to visual distractions is often the result of a tracking problem. The inner-ear system guides the movement of our eyes, enabling us to track the movement of visual information in our environment. If this tracking process is impaired, the eyes may be incapable of keeping pace with this visual information and anxiety may surface.

Gloria’s fear of driving stems from a visual tracking problem. Note how she describes her fear:

“Driving has always terrified me. Even if I’m being driven somewhere, I can’t look at the road all of the time I get overloaded. I thought that if I could learn to drive I wouldn’t be so frightened, so I signed up for a driver’s education course. I quit as soon as we started driving on big streets. I just couldn’t handle it. There were too many things to watch for, cars in front, cars behind, cars on your sides, lights, signs. And everything seemed to be coming at me so fast. I had no time to react. I froze in total panic. The instructor started to scream at me. Then the car behind us hit us. That was the end of my driving career.”

Many visual phobias are partially determined by underlying balance and/or compass and/or motion-related problems.

When our senses of balance, direction, and/or motion stability are impaired, we often become more dependent on visual information to compensate, and think of how getting a visual fix on land suppresses motion sickness.

If the brain is not receiving this necessary visual information, balance, compass, and motion-related problems are aggravated. This triggers anxiety. Although the anxiety is provoked by visual distractions, it really stems from other, inner-ear problems.

The interaction of visual and balance problems can be clearly seen in Charlotte’s description of a frightening panic attack:

“We had gone to see a Broadway show and my husband didn’t tell me that he had gotten balcony seats. There was a mirrored ball that hung in the middle of the ceiling. Flickering lights would bounce off the ball and spin around the theater while the skaters skated in a circle. I was looking down from the balcony, and the place suddenly started to spin. I panicked. I literally had to crawl out, pretty much on my hands and knees, to get out of the balcony seat. I got so dizzy… just from watching the skaters going in a circle and the lights and the ball spinning.”

The vast majority of phobias can be traced to a physiological problem: a malfunction within the inner-ear system! The inner-ear system plays an important role in modulating and controlling anxiety. In my blog, please click on the link below, I have further discussed these problems.

Anxiety – Why Is It A Mystery, When So Many People Are Affected by Anxiety?

Taking a look Anxiety, I found it difficult to understand why anxiety is still a mystery. It affects around 40 million adults in the US; that is almost 20% of the population. That is a staggering figure. There are reports anxiety has no identifiable roots to its cause. It has also been estimated to cost the economy over 42 million per year. To try understanding this phenomenon, one needs to look at the definition of anxiety. Below is a definition from the American Psychology Association (APA)

Anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension; worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure. People with anxiety disorders usually have recurred intrusive thoughts or concerns. They may avoid certain situations out of worry. They may also have physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, dizziness or a rapid heartbeat.

Part of the definition by the Mayo Clinic Staff is; Anxiety happens as a normal part of life. It can be useful when it alerts someone to danger. This seems relatively different compared to the APA. This is starting to get more complicated, so let's examine the Merriam-Webster definition:

Definition of ANXIETY

1A: painful or apprehensive uneasiness of mind usually over an pending or anticipated ill

1B: fearful concern or interest

1C: a cause of anxiety

2: an abnormal and overwhelming sense of apprehension and fear often marked by physiological signs (as sweating, tension, and increased pulse), by doubting the reality and nature of the threat, and by self-doubt about one's capacity to cope with it .

One thing that sticks out is not much of a consensus about anxiety, at least by definition or the cause. With continued investigation of anxiety, there are some general thoughts and treatments for it.

Most seem to be of the belief that anxiety is an extreme case of stress. Stress is essentially defined as coping with daily problems. There are reports that stress affects about 22 percent of the population in 2011, down from 32 percent in 2007. Thinking about these figures, the amount of the population affected by stress and anxiety is around 42 percent. Another hypothesis that seems to have a consensus is both stress and anxiety can lead to substantial health problems. Things like depression, high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks to name a few. Some say they can even lead to suicide.

The final point one finds in the study of anxiety is the consent of treatment. This is through pharmaceutical drugs. Then one finds fundamental differences of opinion has to which drug is best. There are so many drugs for treatment, so let look at a few.

The first is Celexa; its description is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. As with a lot of pharmaceuticals Celexa come with a boat load of disclaimers. The side effects are the same, for instance; call your doctor if one get new or worsening symptoms other are; Insomnia, upset stomach, decreased sex drive, with a warning that this is not a complete list. Do not forget the list of drugs with which it can have an adverse reaction.

The second is Prozac; its description is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) antidepressant. Prozac affects chemical in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression, panic, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Besides massive disclaimers, the side effects are most of the ones listed above. Things like, rigid muscles, uneven heartbeats, tremors, memory problems, seizures, breathing that stops and severe skin reaction just to name a few.

Finally, Paxil; its description is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Paxil affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced. The disclaimers and side effects are similar to the other, but unusual bone pain and ease of bruising stand out.

These standard treatments for anxiety seem to exacerbate the problems. A person not properly diagnosed or had a mild case of anxiety. After getting treated, they would end up with a greater case of anxiety with more complications. I believe this traditional way of treating anxiety is increasing the symptoms, instead of the cause.

One of the largest causes of body malfunction is oxidative stress, and it affects us all. We all have it and our levels increase with age. Simply put oxidative stress is damage to our bodies cells when free radicals (toxic waste) have been released into the cells due to the energy needed for physical activity. Oxidative stress is like an engine rusting from the inside out. Anxiety is a malfunction of one's body at the cellular level; otherwise we would all suffer from it.

To live a healthy life, everyone should do all they can, to reduce oxidative stress and share this information with their family and friends.

Adopting A Better Diet For Your High Blood Pressure

Hypertension, Stroke, Heart Disease are common throughout the United States of America and indeed large parts of the Western World. Epidemiologists attribute much of this down to the Western diet.

Sad to say, after years of much research, Scientists have reached the conclusion that the typical Western Diet (USA & UK especially) is a recipe for a disaster waiting to happen as far as Hypertension and other associate Cardiovascular issues are concerned. Too much Salt, too much of the wrong types of fat (saturated not unsaturated), too many calories, not enough fruit and vegetables, too much alcohol and tobacco; basically, whether we like it or not, living life to the full too much.

Depressing or what?

However amidst all of this “doom and gloom” lies the fact that the good news hidden away in all of this is that in fact as far as the above potential problems are concerned, we can in fact do an awful lot about it. Our fate can actually lie in our own hands. You can take an active role in preventing and controlling high blood pressure by watching what you consume.

What can best be described as the watershed approach to the understanding of all of this came about in 1997 with the publication and results of the first Dietary Approaches to stop Hypertension study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Amongst a great many of the findings published in this study came the first real confirmation that we can actually positively influence our diet and through this help to control our Blood Pressure.

The DASH Diet

The results of this study were in fact so positive that the JNC (Joint National Committee on Health) guidelines now recommend most Americans (and others interested) follow the dietary guidelines of what has now become known as the DASH Diet – the key recommendation here is that all people not just those suffering from Hypertension should follow these dietary principles.

The diet proposes a regime that is low in Fat, and rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Apparently the results of this plan were so impressive that those who were part of the initial study group quickly experienced a significant lowering in the levels of their Blood Pressure.

The initial volunteers on this study group were chosen from a random population of people suffering from Hypertension ad were randomly assigned three various dietary programmes to follow. The first was based on the conventional American diet that was 37% of the calories provided from fatty products. The second group was allocated a programme largely the same but with the additional benefits of added fruit and vegetables. The third group was allocated to the programme that later become known as the DASH Diet. This was 27% of the calories from fat, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, low fat or non fat dairy products and finally small amounts of meat, fish, poultry and nuts.

No prizes for guessing which group came out on top with the DASH participants experiencing an average reduction of up to 11.4 mm Hg in Systolic Pressure and a 5.5 mm Hg drop in Diastolic Pressure levels.

These results were actually favourably comparable to results obtained form similar trials but using Medication and Drugs. Not bad eh?

So the jury is back in, you are what you eat and if you decide and plan carefully what you eat you can do yourself some benefit!

Bicyclists – Know the Potential Heat-Related Illnesses Incurred During Hot-Weather Rides

Not all bicyclists are physically equipped to do the lengthy hot-weather ride. Yet, some new riders think they can end anything, anywhere, anytime. Others are inexperienced or out of shape. Still others have bodily makeups that do not tolerate high-temperatures or heated exercises well. All of these riders need to know the kinds of heat-related illnesses that they could encounter during hot-weather riding, and how to avoid or treat them. The best way to beat heat-related illnesses is to prevent them. Several of these illnesses are listed below.

12 potential heat-related illnesses from outdoor exercise under hot conditions

1. Hypernatremia (high sodium). Most bicyclists will not experience this disturbance of the blood salts because they eat balanced food and drink while riding. This condition compresses a higher than normal sodium blood level, generally caused by not drinking enough water or by dehydrating from excessive sweating or excretions in hot environments.

2. Hyponatremia (low sodium). Most bicyclists will not experience this salt disturbance for the same reasons given above. Hyponatremia, which is a much lower than normal blood sodium condition, is sometimes seen in people who are water dieting with no food or electrolyte intake. Its symptoms include nausea, vomiting, headache, discomfort, stupor, and confusion. Severe cases end in death.

3. Dehydration (water loss). This common condition comes from not drinking enough water or liquids. Physiologically, it means deficient water molecules relative to dissolved solutes (salts). Drink water or sports drinks often during hot-weather rides.

4. Water inoxication (electrolyte dilution). This condition comes from drinking too much water over a short period of time, like, when hot and thirsty. The kidneys can process only so much water at a time. Thus, the blood system and its electrolytes are diluted. The extra water in the blood then seeps into the body cells, causing them to swell. If this swapping occurs in the brain, it can cause headache, difficult breathing, and body slowdown. Riders need to replace their electrolytes by taking in food, fruits or juices, and fortified snacks and liquids at regular intervals.

5. Hyperthermia (heat stroke or sunstroke). The advanced form of hyperthermia is called stroke. This condition occurs when the body produces or absorbs more heat than its sweating and other cooling mechanisms can get rid of. When the body's temperature control system is overloaded, its temperature increases uncontrollably. Heat stroke is very serious. It is considered a medical emergency, and requires immediate treatment, like, cooling down fast and resting in a position position in a cool or shaded area with the head and shoulders slightly raised. Call for help (911). A cool water bath will also cool a rider down fast.

6. Heat Exhaustion (fatigue). This condition happens during an excess loss of body water and salt contained in the sweat and excretions. People who are most prone to heat exhaustion are 1) the elderly, 2) those taking high blood pressure medicine, and 3) those working or exercising under hot conditions. Rest in a shaded area. A cool water bath works well for this condition.

7. Heat cramps (muscle cramps). Profuse sweating during heavy activity or exercise depletes the body of salt and moisture, which can cause painful muscle cramps. These cramps can also be a sign of heat exhaustion. Stop riding, and rest in a cool or shaded area. Adequate exercise and training for long hot rides also reduces the chances for these cramps.

8. Sunburn (damaged skin). Sunburn damages the skin, which causes considered discomfort. It also interferees with the body cooling mechanisms, especially sweating. Wear light-weight, light-colored, loose clothing for shading the skin and for the proper wicking of body sweat. Also, use sufficient amounts of compatible sunscreen lotion on any exposed skin areas.

9. Heat rash (red bumps). This rash is caused by excessive sweating together with the rubbing of the skin by other body parts, by outer clothing, or by soaked underclothing. It can appear like a mass of red blisters or pimples on the neck, chest, and back, in the armpits or groin, under the breasts, or in the skin creases at the joints. Treatment includes cleaning the rash, and applying an ointment or dusting powder to it. Extra or replacement padding in the crotch or seat areas can also reduce heat rash.

10. Heat edema (swelling). Swelling of the legs, hands, or arms caused by lack of training exercise, or by sitting or standing a long time in hot environment. Move around; loosen up. Train before taking long hot rides.

11. Heat tetany (hyperventilation). Heavy breathing caused by stressful periods in the heat. Slow the ride down. Rest in the shade often.

12. Heat syncope (false). Dizziness caused by getting up from a sitting or prone position too fast while the circulatory system is diluted from heated exercise. The upper body fluids move to the legs by gravity, causing light headedness. Lie down and rest with the legs slightly elevated. Typically, this recovery period is fast.

Basic suggestions for enduring hot weather bicycle rides

  1. Choose well-shaded rides, and avoid the midday heat as much as possible.
  2. Hydrate regularly: drink slightly more liquid than your thirst calls for, but not alcohol or high-sugar liquids.
  3. Drink fruit juices and / or fortified sports beverages in addition to water and energy snacks.
  4. Carry ample amounts water or fortified liquids with you at all times.
  5. Replace salt and minerals by ingesting select food, eg, fruits, sandwiches, and sports bars.
  6. Avoid hot foods and large heavy meals that can produce heat within the body.
  7. Do not take in salt pills unless your doctor prescribes them.
  8. Based on your need, wear appropriate clothing and head covering for shading the body and head.
  9. Use adequate sunscreen lotions on the exposed parts of the body.
  10. Condition your body by training for hot-weather riding beforehand (acclimation).
  11. Pace yourself during hot-weather riding. That is, ride slower than normal. Rest often in the shade.
  12. Cool yourself down inside public air-conditioned outlets, or know how to cool yourself with water baths from faucets spigots creeks or ponds.
  13. Ride with someone. Stay within the reach of common help.
  14. Carry a cell phone with emergency numbers already installed.
  15. Use your best common sense by quitting or canceling a ride before heat symptoms occurrence.

In summary, the best self-help defense against heat-related illnesses is the careful prevention of them. See these sites for more information.

How To Control The Symptoms Of Panic Attacks

The Symptoms

Panic attacks are not uncommon, and are examples of what the medical professional call 'anxiety disorders'. Would you be able to recognize the symptoms of a panic attack? No? Then let's have a look at them so you may be able to recognize them. Mind you, people with some of these symptoms may not necessarily be suffering from panic attacks, so be careful and use your head.

  • Sweating: panic attacks can make people sweat. It can also cause cold sweats, or 'clammy' skin.
  • Increased heart rate. You can feel your own heart pound, but in another it's not so obvious unless you check their pulse.
  • Palpitations: Again, you can feel it in yourself, but you will not see it in another person.
  • Trembling: panic attacks cause trembling and shaking. It's natural.
  • Shortness of breath: a classic symptom. You feel as if you can not breathe and in others you may see them gasing or with labored breathing.
  • Chest pain: pain and a tightening in the chest are not uncommon in a panic attack. Sufferers tend to hold their chest with one hand or both arms.
  • A choking sensation: you will feel your throat has swollen up making it not only difficult to breathe, but you will feel as though you are choking.
  • Many more, such as a fear of dying, feeling unreal (some people are unreal!), A tingling or numbness in your face and limbs and hot flashes.
  • It is not uncommon for a panic attack to be confused with a heart attack. Both can have similar initial symptoms.

    What to do

The main thing to do in the event of you having a panic attack is to relax, recognize it for what it is and practice deep breathing. This does not always work, but is the best way to tackle it in yourself. It is more difficult with others. It is very difficult to diagnose panic attacks in others and is probably best left to professionals.

More effective is to avoid having panic attacks in the first place. One theory is that one way to do this is to TRY TO HAVE ONE. It sounds daft, but is claimed to work. Use Private Duty Home Care Instead of Institutional Living for Mom Or Dad

As an adult child, what are you to do when you recognize that your mother or father can not live their life independently any longer? That they are struggling with the activities of daily living or ADLs. Is the only option to move them into an institutional setting? No. Consider home care. Home care provides an alternative to an institutional setting that is flexible, personal and allows the parent to remain in their own home.

So just how is this flexible? Well if you move into an institutional setting, well you live there – 24 hours a day. But say your parent really only needs help getting going in the morning, or Tuesday and Wednesday concern you because you can not go by their house on those days. Hire a caregiver for the schedule that meets your needs. If over nights are a problem, well then problem solved.

But flexibility does not end with just scheduling. You are integral in the development of the care plan that meets the needs of both the client and the family too. This means the level of care – assistance with bathing or not, assistance with ambulation or not. If getting outside the home is stimulating, it should certainly be included in the plan. Also, grocery shopping and going to doctors appointments can be a big benefit of home care services.

Best of all, these services are delivered by your new friends. If you do not end up developing a relationship with your caregivers, you should find a new caregiver. We have memories in our homes, and we want to stay in our homes as long as possible. Yes there may come a time when it no longer makes sense for us to live in our homes, but home care helps us push that time further out. Usually it is a safety issue that will force a senior to move out of their home, but with the presence of a caregiver in the home, the senior's safety is greatly enhanced. Pros and Cons Of Door Hanger Marketing

There are many pros and cons when it comes to using door hangers for your marketing and advertising needs. Here are a few examples of why.

PRO – They are personal. Some people appreciate this aspect of door hanger marketing. They need to be hand delivered, which shows effort and care on the part of the advertiser or company. This is great, especially when you are trying to motivate a specific target market of people. Custom hangers are great for local marketing. Local events, campaigns, etc. can all be promoted positively with printed door hangers.

CON – A lot of people who receive see them as an automatic throw away piece. Because there are so many postcards, flyers, and other types of advertising materials that come through the mail every day, you really need to make your hangers stand out in a positive way. This is why the design phase of your door hanger creation is so important, you must catch someone’s attention before your creation ends up in the trash can. Also, there is no envelope for a potential customer to open or other piece to distract them or make them look twice. So, this is why the look and design of your door hangers means so much.

PRO – They are one of the more unique pieces of advertising materials you could choose to use. While you do have the “throw away” hurdle to overcome, if you do a great job during the design phase, you will end up with a beautiful, unique hanger to distribute. This is definitely a pro. If you can grab attention and deliver a powerful message, yours will be a definite success.

CON – Some people view them as a weaker form of marketing material due to their lack of reach. Due to their delivery demands, hangers just cannot get to as many people as say, a postcard that goes through a stamping machine. Because each door hanger needs to be hand delivered, the amount of people you can contact is going to be smaller. Direct mail pieces are going to be able to reach more people due to their delivery method alone. This is why door hangers are great tools to use when you are trying to contact a local group of people.

Overall, they have several pros and cons but ultimately they are best suited to promote a local business or organization and be distributed to homes in the surrounding area. You are going to get the best response this way, especially if you design your door hangers well and make the consumer feel as though you care about them and value their business before they have decided to give it to you.
