Causes of Crohn’s Disease and So Much More

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel condition in which the entire gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus can become inflamed until it is causes pain, destruction of the intestinal lining and excessive diarrhea.

If you are one of the many patients suffering with Crohn’s disease it is important that you understand the causes of Crohn’s disease so that you can make adjustments when possible to alleviate or at least reduce some of the symptoms.

There are many different theories that exist about what causes Crohn’s disease; however, absolutely none of them have been proven 100% to prove the cause of Crohn’s disease, which leads us to still wonder about the exact cause of Crohn’s disease.

One of the more popular theories today for the cause of Crohn’s disease is that the human body’s immune system which is made from a variety of cells and proteins designed to protect us from infection actually act up and miss fires while acting abnormally in people with Crohn’s disease.

The misbehaving immune system mistakes foods, bacteria, and other substances for being foreign. The normal response of the body’s immune system is to attack these apparently foreign invaders as a way of protecting the body.

During an immune system attack the white blood cells in the body accumulate in the lining of the intestines producing chronic inflammation which leads to injury of the lining itself, up to and including deep ulcerations in the lining of the G.I. tract.

At this time scientists don’t even know the abnormal functioning of the human immune system in those patients with Crohn’s disease is the actual cause of Crohn’s or if it is simply a result of the disease itself. It seems to be an issue about which came first the chicken or the egg?

Current medical research indicates that the edema and inflammation seen in the gastrointestinal tract of Crohn’s disease sufferers involves many issues such as the genetic DNA that the person has inherited from their parents, the immune system itself, and the environment.

One possible cause of Crohn’s disease is that the body may be naturally reacting to foreign substances found in the environment which then causes inflammation of the intestinal system.

There are some researchers who believe that a specific protein produced by the immune system may also be a cause for the inflammation associated with Crohn’s disease. However, again we still do not know the exact cause of Crohn’s disease.

This is also what ultimately causes it to be very difficult to adequately treat Crohn’s disease.

So while it is a great topic to discuss, it is still painfully obvious that we do not know for sure the cause of Crohn’s disease.

Research still needs to be conducted so that we can better determine the precise cause of the inflammation of the G.I. system associated this inflammatory bowel disease.

Scalp Eczema – Do You Want A Healthy Scalp

Scalp Eczema – I once received an email from a reader who was desperate to cure their very scalp eczema.

The email read: "My scalp eczema is getting me down." I have tried so many different shampoos, creams and ointments and yet there is no change in my condition. Can you help me please ….. "

After an exchange of two or three more emails I was able to give her some information that would cause her no harm, would dramatically improve her general health and transform the condition of her scalp.

Here is just a snippet of what I suggested she does to dramatically heal her disturbing condition:

# 1 – The first thing I suggested was that she drew away all the foods made from dairy products. She had eggs, milk, yogurt, cheese and cream in her refrigerator. I suggested she tossed the lot into a garbage bag and thread it away.

# 2 – The second thing I suggested she was to purchase some bean sprouts from her local health store. I asked her to look in the store cooler and pick at least three different types of bean sprouts. I suggested she chose from the following: Alfalfa, Sunflower, Mung, Adzuki and Lentil. By including more sprouts into her diet she was able to nourish, cleanse and rejuvenate her skin as well as deliver a regular and much needed supply of vital enzymes.

# 3 – The third suggestion I gave her was to include at least two or three tablespoons per day of either extra virgin olive oil, flax seed oil or hemp seed oil. This would ensure she obtained a good supply of essential fatty acids in her diet.

# 4 – The fourth suggestion was that upon waking each morning that she prepared a large glass of freshly juiced vegetables. Again this would deliver a quick and easily digestible supply of enzymes, vitamins and minerals to her system.

# 5 – The last and final suggestion to her was that she ate at least 65% raw foods for either her lunch or dinner. She should create a large salad and include bean sprouts, pumpkin seeds, seseame and sunflower seeds, spinach and wheatgrass.

After eight days of following the suggestions, the reader emailed to give me some feedback. She said that she had not noticed a considerable difference in the way she felt about herself, in the way her scalp felt, it was smooth and healed quicker than it did previously and she no longer had the urge to scratch at her head continuously.

She promised faithfully that should would continue with the recommended foods because she wanted to cure her scalp eczema forever.

It worked for her and it worked for me. Could it work for you?

You will not know until you try.

Here's to healthy scalp.

The Best Lotion For Thin Skin Will Make Your Skin Thicker, Smoother And Younger

Paper thin skin is prone to dryness, sagging and wrinkling; however, you can make it thicker with the right skincare products. So, this article is going to tell your how to select the best lotion for thin skin.

Collagen and elastin are two vital proteins produced naturally by the human body; they are responsible for making the dermis plump, firm, smooth and wrinkle-free. Unfortunately, as you get older, the rate of metabolic functions in your body begin slows down; hence, your body produces less of the vital substances it need to stay healthy and youthful. Decrease in metabolic functions also affects the production of collagen and elastin; thus, low amounts of these proteins lead to thin skin, sagging and wrinkles.

So, the best lotion for thin skin should be able to increase the levels of collagen and elastin in your body; there are so many creams on the market that contain these substances. However, the best thin skin lotion does not contain either of the two proteins; research shows that collagen and elastin molecules are too large to penetrate your dermis when rubbed on the skin.

The most effective way to increase these two proteins in your body is by making your body produce them naturally; so, the best lotion for thin skin should contain an effective stimulant. Cynergy TK is a bio-active keratin proven to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the body; hence, it makes your skin thicker, firmer, and also removes wrinkles and age spots.

Cynergy TK also helps to increase the ability of your skin to retain moisture, thereby keeping your skin hydrated; it is important to note that dryness also aids thinness.

Another vital ingredient to look for in the best lotion of thin skin is Nano-lipobelle HEQ10; this is a strong and effective antioxidant that helps to kill free radicals and reverse their damaging effects on the skin. Free radicals damage cells and destroy collagen; hence, using a cream that contain Nano-lipobelle HEQ10 helps to boost collagen in your body and removes visible signs of aging.

The best lotion for thin skin should also contain natural moisturizing oils like Babassu, Avocado oil, Jojoba oil and Maracuja; these emollients help to keep the skin hydrated, thereby making it plump, supple, smooth and radiant.

Avoid skincare products that contain chemicals or synthetic ingredients because they dry out the skin and cause allergic reactions; stick to using natural brands because natural ingredients are effective and safe on your body.

Penicillin – A Life Saver and a Dangerous Allergen

Years ago, before allergies to it were discovered, penicillin was the only antibiotic doctors used to treat infections. Since its discovery in mold found on moldy oranges, it had been a relatively cheap and easy-to-make solution to what had previously been a deadly problem. Even today it is the most-used antibiotic worldwide.

Of course, it was discovered fairly quickly that many people had allergic reactions to it. But these symptoms ran the gamut between minor annoying rashes and life-threatening breathing difficulties. Common symptoms include rash or hives which could cover a significant portion of the body; swollen lips, tongue or face which could be severe; and itchy, red, irritated and bloodshot eyes.

More severe allergic reactions can be very serious. They might include a sudden drop in blood pressure and/or an anaphylactic reaction resulting in swelling of the bronchial airway making breathing difficult.

It became important to be aware if you were allergic to penicillin or not so you could instruct any doctors giving you care. This is still a question all doctors ask their patients and keep record of.

Chances are you’ve had penicillin and already know whether or not you’re allergic to it. If you’ve never had it, be sure your physicians know that. They will then take extra care if, or when, penicillin is called for in the future. They will watch for dangerous symptoms of this, the most common type of drug allergy.

In earlier years if you were one of those unfortunate few who with severe allergies to penicillin, you were just out of luck. For you, there was no alternative. Your doctor’s hands were tied and, like many before penicillin was discovered, you were likely to die from an infection we wouldn’t even give much thought to today.

It is still unknown why some people are allergic to penicillin and others are not. It’s also unclear why some have such severe reactions as to have life threatened, where others get only minor skin irritations.

If you have taken penicillin and experienced any of the symptoms mentioned, contact your doctor immediately. The most severe symptom, anaphylactic reaction, will present itself just about immediately. The more minor rashes and swelling may take a few hours to appear. Treatments for the symptoms are readily available; however a cure for the allergy does not yet exist.

Often, pediatricians will test young children for allergies to penicillin before it’s needed. This is a good idea. If your child has never had penicillin, tell your doctor. He can determine whether or not your child is allergic and, if so, to what degree. That way you’ll be prepared for any emergency.

If penicillin is recommended for your child and you DON’T know whether or not he’s allergic, make sure the doctors know that. They can take precautions before giving penicillin or give an alternative antibiotic for safety, depending on the situation.

Allergies can be much more dangerous than you might think. It’s important to know what drugs may cause you adverse reactions. In the case of penicillin this is especially important, because it is often the first antibiotic tried and it has the highest allergic reaction rate of any other drug.

Depressed: Am I? And How Would I Know?

You may not know at all. In other words, some people are depressed without even knowing it. People show depression in different ways, depending on their biochemistry, age, upbringing, cultural background. With some people it is obvious, with others less so. Yet it is a serious problem. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 2020 depression will be the second cause of disability worldwide. It is currently ranked fourth.

What separates depression from feeling blue? If some unhappy circumstance comes our way, your boyfriend dumps you, you lose your job or miss out on a promotion, or you suffer the death of a loved one – we become unhappy. All of these are understandable sources of regret, sorrow, and lament. In some cases, they may trigger depression. But they are not depression. It is a natural part of life to go through bereavement. To have regrets. To feel sad. But when that sadness becomes a part of everything we do, and keeps us from enjoying life, it may, in fact, be depression.

Many of us associate depression with sadness or unhappiness. Less commonly known is that depression can, especially in children, show itself as irritability. Some express depression in a burst of activity, often followed by a devastating crash. In extreme cases this is called bipolar disorder, what used to be more descriptively known as manic depression. This is a form of major depression that can be crippling. Between the ecstatic highs and punishing lows is a very uncomfortable mix of the two. People in this energetic and depressed state are at a much higher risk for suicide. In a manic episode, a person may hear voices or see things. In the past, people in a manic state were often misdiagnosed as being schizophrenic.

Some people suffer through a kind of "living dead" depression. Everyone around this person knows something is terribly wrong. It is draining to be in a room with such a person. It is even more draining to be that person. These are what we call the vegetative symptoms of depression. It is what sounds like, feeling like a vegetable. The person experiences a terrible lack of interest in things and people, difficulty getting out of bed in the morning, difficulty with sleep that can take a number of forms – sleeping round the clock, or having trouble getting to sleep, or waking up in the middle of the night.

How do I get treatment?

The good news is that depression is treatable. For some, psychotherapy is very effective in treating depression. For those with more serious depression, medication in conjuction with psychotherapy has been shown to be more effective than either treatment alone. Many different factors are considered in treating depression, your history of depression, family history of depression, severity and frequency of depressive episodes, as well as current life circumstances. But it is important to seek treatment. The current thinking is that untreated depression only worsens in severity, becomes entrenched, more difficult to treat. Treatment can mean the difference between suffering tremendously and getting on with one's life.

Anxiety Attacks Caused by Malfunction in the Inner Ear – Auditory and Coordination Related Phobias!

All auditory sound information is filtered, sequenced and fine tuned by the inner-ear system. If this system is impaired, you may be hypersensitive to certain loud or piercing noises, such as: a clap of thunder, a fire alarm, a police siren, screeching brakes, a ringing telephone, a tire blowout. If any of these sounds provoke severe or uncontrollable anxiety, phobias may develop.

Notice how this mechanism is highlighted in Evan's description of his audit phobias:

"There are certain sounds that I have always been very sensitive to and there avoid: high-pitched or shrill female voices on the radio, running water, dishes banging together, dogs barking, and normally pitched voices in small, bounded areas. of speeding trucks on the turnpike drives me crazy. And music, even classical music, must be kept at a low volume. If not, I feel jangled and upset. "

When auditory information is not being properly processed you may be hypersensitive to all loud noise or even to garbled noise, such as the noise of a crowd. Thus, for example, Robert has panic attacks that are triggered by various noisy environments. He explains:

"I can't go to a restaurant unless I know it's a really quiet place. If I'm stuck in a noisy restaurant I start to sweat. .. before I go crazy! ' Obviously I don't. I just run out of the room. I know this isn't normal, but I can't help it.

Loud or garbled noise makes some phobics dizzy or disoriented. This indicates that several faulty inner-ear mechanisms ie auditory, balance, and compass can jointly contribute to the development of phobic behavior.

The inner ear acts like a guided-missile system, coordinating and fine tuning your movements, voluntary and involuntary, and thoughts. When this system is impaired, coordination problems may trigger anxiety especially when these problems subject you to embarrassment, frustration, or danger. If this anxiety is severe or uncontrollable, phobic behavior may develop.

Coordination-Related Phobias: An Example

Sylvia has a coordination-related fear of driving:

"I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I can't drive." I can't steer the car. I can't keep the car on a straight line. it was so easy for most people. It's hard to believe that only you can't drive.

Stairs, Escalators, and Elevators:

The fear of escalators, stairs, and elevators frequently stems from coordination problems. Here is how Susan described her fear of escalators and elevators:

"I would go up the escalator, but never down." I actually feared that my foot might have gotten caught on the step. Riding in an elevator without someone was with me. I was afraid the door would crush me.

When a phobic trigger provokes anxiety, fear, or panic, that response is imprinted in the memory banks of your brain. Once this happens, your brain has actually learned to panic in the same way it once learned to tie a shoelace or ride a bicycle.

As a result, the majority of phobics don't have to look down from the top of a twenty-story building to know they are afraid of heights … they don't have to hear thunder to know they're afraid of loud noises … they don t have to stand alone in an empty parking lot to know they're afraid of wide-open spaces … they don't have to get stuck in an elevator to know they're afraid of small, enclosed spaces … they feel it in their very souls. In fact, the mere anticipation of such a confrontation is often enough to trigger anxiety, fear, or total panic.

The vast majority of phobias can be traced to a physiological problem: a malfunction within the inner-ear system! The inner-ear system plays an important role in modulating and controlling anxiety. In my blog, click on the link below, I have further discussed these problems.

Anxiety Disorders In Women

Traditionally, it has been perceived that men are subject to more stresses because of the various responsibilities that they face, which includes being the provider of the family. However, in recent times, this perception has changed, as women are now considered to lead more stressful lives. This is because of the appreciation that people now have with regard to the stresses that women are subjected to as a result of their responsibilities, which include keeping a job, taking care of the children, and maintaining a household. Apart from the list of responsibilities that women deal with, there is other evidence that proves the stressful lives that women lead. One of these is the incidence of anxiety disorders among women as a result of stress, which is twice as much as the incidence of anxiety disorders among men.

Anxiety Disorders that Women Suffer From

There are six categories of anxiety disorders in women, which include specific phobias, social phobias, post traumatic tress disorder (PTSD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Women who suffer from specific phobias often exhibit uncontrollable reactions to objects or situations like spiders or heights. If left untreated, these phobias can lead to a person avoiding everyday activities or situations, which can be debilitating.

On the other hand, women who suffer from social phobias exhibit extreme anxiety caused by fear of being judged by other people, which can lead to avoidance behaviors. With regard to PTSD cases, the anxiety of women who suffer from them is a result of being reminded of a traumatic experience that caused them much anxiety. Unfortunately, this ‘reminder’ can have some debilitating effects as well.

Women who suffer from an OCD usually exhibit behavior that would make them perform repeated rituals or routines involuntarily. One example of this is when a woman repeatedly locks her doors to make sure that it is locked as a result of her fear that leaving it unlocked would lead to a burglary. With regard to GADs, women who suffer from them often exhibit excessive worrying about something for months at a time, while for panic disorders, women who suffer from them exhibit sever panic attacks for no apparent reason at all.

Contrary to popular opinion, women lead more stressful lives than men do. Evidence of this is the high incidence of anxiety disorders in women. However, as with any disease, early detection increases the chances of effectively treating it, and the same goes for anxiety disorders.

Motivation And Weight Loss – The Hidden Key To Success

Making the lifestyle changes that are needed to lose weight will require motivation – the ability to stay positive and focused for as long as it takes to achieve success. Many doctors find that keeping their motivation levels high can be the most difficult part of their own weight loss journey, but being aware of the obstacles that can arise and planning to overcome them can help to make the path easier.

Research shows that being able to stick with a diet is a larger factor in success than the diet itself; motivation is the key that can turn a history of failed weight loss attempts into a lifetime of success.

Some people are fortunately enough to be able to make a decision to lose weight, find a diet and exercise plan, stick to it like glue and reach their target without any setbacks or disappointments. Unfortunately, they are often the very people who feel they can advise others on how easily they too could achieve success, if only they would follow the same plan with the same willpower.

However, most people's experience of trying to lose weight is very different. They find that willpower alone can not help them resist the external pressures from our environment to eat unhealthy, or the internal pressures that come from many years of educated behaviors and ingrained responses around food.

Even major wake-up calls, such as a diagnosis of weight-related illness or a humiliating experience, are not always sufficient to prompt the long-lasting lifestyle changes needed to lose weight. Instead, too many dieters find that despite their best intentions, diets do not last more than a few days. Rather than blame the diet (no matter how restrictive) they blame them and their lack of willpower, and return to their normal eating habits having learned nothing except that they "can not lose weight" or that "diets do not work for them "He said.

All too often, this cycle of failure and self-blame continues until it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and any attempts at losing weight are abandoned. Yet, as we have already seen, being severely overweight is such a serious health issue that it is vital to find a way out of the cycle.

Most people are more likely to snack and comfort-eat when they're tired, but getting a good nights sleep may be more important to weight loss than that: studies show that people who get five hours' sleep or less a night have higher levels of ghrelin (a hunger-inducing hormone) and lower levels of leptin (an appetite-suppressing hormone) than people who sleep for seven or eight hours. As overweight people often have disturbed sleep because of snoring or the more serious condition, sleep apnea, it is well worth exploring how to overcome insomnia and management breathing better.

There are many ways of staying motivated and finding weight loss success. Our website provides some great information. Do not feel that there is no hope for your situation because there is. By learning more about how to keep yourself motivated you can overcome the difficult challenges of any diet.

Leather Golf Gloves For Lady Golfers

Choosing a golf glove is like choosing a pair of shoes. If you choose a poor quality pair of shoes that do not fit right, you are not at your best. This is also true of golf gloves. A glove does not have to be expensive but does need to be of good quality and fit properly. Weaving a golf glove provides the proper grip on the golf club and allows you to complete a swing without your hand slipping and sending the ball off into a different direction and adding needless strokes to your game. I have tried gloves from a few different manufacturers but have found two of them who are consistent with their quality and fit. I'm sure there are many more but I would like to share these two with you.

This glove was designed by a leading orthopedic hand surgeon. The Bionic Women's Golf Glove improves comfort, control, grip and overall performance. Anatomical relief pads even out the surface of your hand. You do not have to strangle the club to feel in control. The lighter-yet-snugger grip will prevent the clubface from twisting on contact. This glove is made of soft Cabretta leather and is machine washable, air dry.

Lady Fairway Tan-Thru Half Length Golf Glove comes in half length allowing for a perfect fit no matter your finger nail length and also in a full finger length. The nice feature of this golf glove is they allow the sun to tan your hand naturally. The flex-fit of the nylon mesh construction gives a comfortable and adjustable fit.

Whatever glove you choose, make sure it's comfortable on your hand, grips the club well and does not slide when swinging.

Anxiety Panic Attacks Caused by Malfunction in the Inner Ear – Motion and Visual Related Phobias!

The inner-ear processes all motion-related information. If it is impaired, you may be hypersensitive to horizontal motion, vertical motion, clockwise motion, counterclockwise motion, or any combination of the above.

Depending on what types of motion you are sensitive to, and your degree of sensitivity to each, the movement of a boat, plane, car, elevator, escalator, or even a rocking chair can provoke any or all of the following symptoms:

o Anxiety, and related symptoms

o Dizziness

o Light-headedness

o Nausea

o Vomiting

o Retching

If your anxiety is severe or uncontrollable, phobias may result.

Motion-Related Phobias: An Example

Chris has a motion-related fear of flying. Notice how his fear is specifically related to horizontal motion sensitivity:

“I’ve only been on an airplane once. That was enough. It was during takeoff. The plane started picking up speed, and suddenly I was pinned to the back of my seat. I couldn’t move. I could barely breathe. My stomach was inside out. It was as if I had lost control of my body… like I was having some kind of seizure. As soon as the plane stabilized I felt a little better, so I started drinking. I don’t remember much after that.”

An inner-ear dysfunction can also result in motion insensitivity. Individuals with this problem need to be in motion and become anxious when they are stuck, trapped, tied down, or unable to move literally or symbolically. This motion-related claustrophobic anxiety can result in a wide variety of phobias.

Some individuals have the worst of both worlds. They are hypersensitive to some forms of motion and hyposensitive to others. These individuals often suffer from numerous motion-related phobias.

The inner-ear system processes all visual information. If this system is impaired, you may be hypersensitive to bright lights, fluorescent lights-even certain colors. Any or all of these may provoke anxiety.

A wide variety of visual distractions can also provoke anxiety, including: flickering lights, blurred images, the dark, and various hypnotic patterns as tiled floors, moving cars, oncoming headlights, crowds, wallpaper patterns, food displays, etc.

If visually triggered anxiety is severe or uncontrollable, various phobias may develop, including: fear of the dark, fear of bright lights, fear of crowds, fear of supermarkets, fear of driving, etc.

A Visual Tracking Problem:

Sensitivity to visual distractions is often the result of a tracking problem. The inner-ear system guides the movement of our eyes, enabling us to track the movement of visual information in our environment. If this tracking process is impaired, the eyes may be incapable of keeping pace with this visual information and anxiety may surface.

Gloria’s fear of driving stems from a visual tracking problem. Note how she describes her fear:

“Driving has always terrified me. Even if I’m being driven somewhere, I can’t look at the road all of the time I get overloaded. I thought that if I could learn to drive I wouldn’t be so frightened, so I signed up for a driver’s education course. I quit as soon as we started driving on big streets. I just couldn’t handle it. There were too many things to watch for, cars in front, cars behind, cars on your sides, lights, signs. And everything seemed to be coming at me so fast. I had no time to react. I froze in total panic. The instructor started to scream at me. Then the car behind us hit us. That was the end of my driving career.”

Many visual phobias are partially determined by underlying balance and/or compass and/or motion-related problems.

When our senses of balance, direction, and/or motion stability are impaired, we often become more dependent on visual information to compensate, and think of how getting a visual fix on land suppresses motion sickness.

If the brain is not receiving this necessary visual information, balance, compass, and motion-related problems are aggravated. This triggers anxiety. Although the anxiety is provoked by visual distractions, it really stems from other, inner-ear problems.

The interaction of visual and balance problems can be clearly seen in Charlotte’s description of a frightening panic attack:

“We had gone to see a Broadway show and my husband didn’t tell me that he had gotten balcony seats. There was a mirrored ball that hung in the middle of the ceiling. Flickering lights would bounce off the ball and spin around the theater while the skaters skated in a circle. I was looking down from the balcony, and the place suddenly started to spin. I panicked. I literally had to crawl out, pretty much on my hands and knees, to get out of the balcony seat. I got so dizzy… just from watching the skaters going in a circle and the lights and the ball spinning.”

The vast majority of phobias can be traced to a physiological problem: a malfunction within the inner-ear system! The inner-ear system plays an important role in modulating and controlling anxiety. In my blog, please click on the link below, I have further discussed these problems.

How To Use BMI To Prevent Heart Disease?

BMI stands for body mass index. It is a surrogate measure of the amount of fat in the body. It is widely used as a good indicator of body fat, and it is easy and convenient to use without incurring high costs.

Using sophisticated methods to measure body fat requires highly trained personnel and expensive equipment. Moreover, these methods are not suitable in most clinical or home situations.

To find out your BMI, you just need a weight scale, a measuring tape and a calculator. Is not it simple? The formula used to calculate BMI is:

BMI (kg / m2) = (weight in kg) / height in meter x height in meter

It should suit most people, except for those who are very muscular (such as body builders) and pregnant women.

Asians face a high risk of developing high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, high blood lipids, and diabetes even while they have relatively low levels of BMI. These risk factors can in turn lead to disease such as heart attack or stroke if they are not detected and treated early.

After examining the data from some 10 Asian countries, WHO (World Health Organization) recommended the BMI levels for Asians to be redefined according to their risk levels instead of weight categories. The usual BMI defined by WHO is in accordance to weight categories:

– Obese (BMI 30 and above);

– Overweight (25 – 29.9);

– Healthy range (18.5 – 24.9);

– Underweight (below 18.5).

Asians with BMI:

– 27.5 and above are at high risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes;

– 23 to 27.4 are at moderate risk of developing the above disease;

– 18.5 to 22.9 are at low risk of developing the above disease;

– Below 18.5 are at risk of developing nutritional deficiency disease and osteoporosis.

Therefore, high BMI and low BMI are equally undesirable.

For Asians, if their BMI exceeds 23 kg / m2, they should consult their doctors immediately for screening for cardiac risk factors, especially if they are related to someone in their family who has heart disease or diabetes. They should also aim to improve their fitness and lower their health risks.

The following steps may help achieve a healthy weight:

– Set a realistic weight goal.

– Target to lose no more than 0.5 to 1 kg a week.

– Reduce your calorie intake.

– Include regular physical activity as part of your lifestyle.

– Avoid slimming pills, drugs and teas except under medical supervision.

It may be useful if one can consult a doctor, a qualified dietician, or a certified fitness instructor, who can help customize a suitable weight management program.

Cholesterol and the Risk of Heart Disease

Most people are unaware of the fact that having abnormal blood cholesterol levels seriously jeopardizes one's health. High blood cholesterol is a major cause of heart disease, rendering people very susceptible to suffering heart attack. Actually, the higher your total blood cholesterol level, the higher your risk for developing coronary disease and suffering a heart attack. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among the population of the United States. Statistics indicate that there are more than one million cases of heart attack reported in the United States each year. Around 500,000 Americans die each year as a consequence of heart disease. Most cases of heart disease and heart failure among the American population are solely caused by appropriate blood cholesterol levels. This is a very disturbing fact, as coronary disease due to high blood cholesterol can be effectively prevented and treated in present.

Apart from coronary disease, people with high blood cholesterol levels are also very exposed to developing peripheral vascular disease, arthritis and in some cases, diabetes. People with high blood cholesterol levels are also prone to suffering stroke and persistent brain damage. All these conditions are linked with inappropriate blood flow and poor oxygenation of the organism, consequences of abnormally high blood cholesterol levels.

Cholesterol is a fatty, wax-like substance produced by the liver. In normal amounts, cholesterol is beneficial for the organism, supporting the activity of blood cells and assisting the body in producing hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. While in small amounts cholesterol is benign for the human body, fulfilling a series of vital roles within the organism, in large amounts it seriously affects one's overall health. When in excess, cholesterol accumulates in the bloodstream, sticking to the interior walls of arteries and obstruction normal blood flow. Clogged with cholesterol deposits, the treaties eventually became hardened and narrow, slowing down blood flow. When cholesterol accumulates inside the coronary arteries, it advances blood flow from reaching the heart, increasing the heart valves from vital nutrients and oxygen supplies. Complete blockage of the coronary arteries causes the heart to stop functioning, resulting in a heart attack.

In order to prevent the occurrence of heart disease and other conditions associated with high blood cholesterol levels, it is very important to regularly have your cholesterol numbers checked. If your blood cholesterol values are higher than average, you should address your doctor in order to receive the appropriate treatment. In addition, you will have to follow a cholesterol-lowering diet and make a few lifestyle improvements in order to keep your cholesterol levels in check. Corroborated with proper diet and a physically active lifestyle, cholesterol-lowering medications significantly greatly reduce the risk of developing a wide range of life-threatening conditions linked with high blood cholesterol levels.

Doctors recommend all people with ages over 20 to have their cholesterol levels measured regularly. Young adults and middle age people are advised to have their cholesterol levels measured every 5 years, while older adults need to have their cholesterol levels measured at least once every 2 years.

Christian Team Building Activities, Games, and Ideas for Fun

Christianity promotes unity and hence team building is an essential activity of the church. To foster unity and enhance the values taught by the religion in the congregation, some Christian team building activities for adults can be organized by the church. Such activities will also help develop leadership skills, reinforce social commitments and co-operation amongst the church goers.

To develop the activities for building a team of church goers, the Bible is undoubtedly the best source. It contains numerous sermons on the importance unity and teamwork hold, in building a strong human race. So before embarking on devising activities for adult church goers, consult the Holy Scriptures thoroughly.

1. Hunt a Bible Verse: Based on the game of Treasure Hunt, this game is a great team builder that will renew interest in the Bible amongst your congregation. Get the people into groups of three to five members. Give a Bible and a list of clues for a verse in it, to each group. Some of the clues could be easy pointers to the verse. Each group should hand in their list of verses within the stipulated time.

2. Do as Jesus would do: Divide the people into groups as in the previous game. Here you will need a few facilitators. They will depict a scene or situation to each group separately. One member from the group will react to the scenario thus presented in the manner he thinks Jesus would have reacted to it. Each and every member of those taking part should be allowed to enact a scene. The chief facilitator will judge the performances.

3. Serving the Needy: Charity or helping those in need is the most Christian of all human activities. An outdoor camp could be organized at a place where people are suffering. You could serve people suffering from accidents and natural calamities, or the sick in a hospital or take care of destitute and homeless children. Here too divide the people into smaller groups and assign them different tasks.

These and other activities that instill the essence of Christianity could be regular activities in a church to build a team of people with genuine human feelings.

A Nation at Risk – North American Power Grid Security

“With adversaries’ malware in the National Grid, the nation has little or no chance of withstanding a major cyberattack on the North American electrical system. Incredibly weak cybersecurity standards with a wideopen communications and network fabric virtually guarantees success to major nation-states and competent hacktivists. This [electric power] industry is simply unrealistic in believing in the resiliency of this Grid subject to a sophisticated attack. When such an attack occurs, make no mistake, there will be major loss of life and serious crippling of National Security capabilities”.,

From White Paper: Security in the North American Power Grid – A Nation at Risk, George Cotter former Chief of Staff, National Security Agency.

If the above quote doesn’t send shivers down your spine, then at least consider the source. There is no more qualified that George Cotter. Not only is Mr. Cotter the former NSA Chief of Staff but he also served as its chief scientist and twice as head of its technology division.

Let’s study the quote a little more closely. Mr. Cotter starts by pointing out that adversaries of the United States already have inserted their virus malware into our national power grid. In other writings by Mr. Cotter he makes it clear that China, Russia and Iran are the chief culprits. North Korea lurks but is not yet in the same league as the first three.

He goes on to point out our nation has little to no chance of withstanding a major cyberattack on our electrical grid system. The United States has a three part grid: east, west and Texas. The weakest links are the smaller power companies. All three grids are interconnected. Affect one power company and the potential exists to take down a third of the nation or more for weeks if not months.

Let’s think for a moment how wide open the communications system is n the United States. The internet, phone, cable and satellite systems all touch our lives on a daily basis. All are powered by electricity. Add a bad actor into the mix with motive, opportunity, expertise and the patience to execute a plan and you have the recipe for what is likely going to happen. The only question remains, will it happen today or in ten years? It’s hard to imagine it taking another ten years!

Cotter’s last comment that this will be a crippling event complete with major loss of life is especially sobering. Again, remember who Cotter is. He knows of what he speaks. 99.9% of Americans have enough food and water to last 2-3 days. 50% might have enough food and water to last a week or two. But then what? Society starts to break down as people scramble for what they need to stay alive. Those that have the food and water stored will quickly be in protection mode. The government is simply going to be missing for a while.

All the above is scary. However, to the extent you do three things starting today will be the extent to which you lower your stress level and begin to put in place a plan to survive. First, you must have a survival plan. Second, begin to put your survival knowledge to practice. Third, begin building a cache of materials needed to survive. This need not cost thousands. Much can be acquired on a month by month basis starting with the most important first. When that day comes, you’re either going to be prepared or not. Taking reasonable steps now will pay big dividends in the months and years to come.
