Tea Tree Oil – Antiseptic, Anti-Fungal, Antiviral

Tea Tree Oil is an essential oil obtained by steam distillation and extraction of the leaves from the Melaleuca tree in Australia. It is a clear essential oil with a fresh camphoraceous odor. Australian aboriginals used tea leaves for healing skin cuts, burns, sore throats, skin ailments and infection by crushing the leaves and applying them to the affected area.

Tea Tree Oil has been recognized as a potent antiseptic, anti-fungal, and antiviral product. It contains consignants called terpenoids, which have been found to have antiseptic and antifungal activity. The compound terpinen-4-ol is the most abundant and is thought to be responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity. This oil is used medically in treating various ailments, skin care and cosmetic products. Tea Tree Oil is used for the following conditions: acne, athlete's foot, dandruff, vaginitis, thrush, periodontal disease, as an antiseptic, boils, lice eczema, psoriasis, ear infection, sunburn, poison ivy, bee stings, insect bites and yeast infection. It has an anti-viral activity, especially with the herpes virus (cold sores, chicken pox, shingle blisters, and warts). It is also used as a first aid, body odor, jock itch, and in vapor therapy. While using in vapor therapy, this oil helps with colds, measles, sinusitis, and viral infections. Tea Tree Oil is a natural ingredient used almost exclusively externally.

Tea Tree Oil is a very powerful stimulant. It can combat the three categories of infectious organisms: bacteria, fungi and viruses. Many antibiotics today have increasing resistance. It has a complexity with over 100 identified natural compounds which makes it basically impossible for bacteria to build up a resistance.

Does UV Work in Swimming Pools?

The short answer is yes. But don’t stop there.

There is an almost hysterical run toward using UV (ultra violet) light to “better” treat and disinfect swimming pools against bather and environmental waste. And you can’t stop at the answer above. You have to understand what UV treatment is actually doing. Like everything, there are pros and cons. There are also myths that must be dispelled and put to rest.

First the facts. There are 3 types of UV. UV-A: causes wrinkles in our skin and “burning”. UV-B aids in the production of Vitamin D. Both of these are able to penetrate the earth’s atmosphere. UV-C is used commercially and personally to disinfect food and objects. UV-C cannot penetrate the atmosphere and must be artificially created.

UV-C is excellent in sanitizing against bacteria, viruses, cysts & certain protozoa (including cryptosporidia and giardia – usually introduced from bather or environmental fecal matter – of which both are chlorine and halogen resistant). It does not allow algae to grow and multiply. It is non-irritating to mucous membranes, eyes and ears. It does not affect your pool’s water balance. It aids in reducing (not eliminating) chloramines and chlorine demand.

How does UV-C actually work? UV-C works works by disrupting the bacteria cells DNA and RNA. When the DNA and RNA are disrupted, the bacteria and viruses can not reproduce and multiply. Please note: UV-C DOES NOT KILL ANYTHING!

That’s the first myth or bit of information debunked. UV-C does not kill anything. Furthermore UV-C will NOT remove any micro-organisms. The other things that UV-C will not do are:

  • Protect against re-contamination. As swimmers enter the water with “new” bacteria and micro-organisms, those must be treated.
  • Work well in cloudy water. Cloudy water will effectively block the absorption of UV-C to do its job.
  • Work well in the presence of heavy metals (dissolved iron, copper and manganese). Iron effectively blocks UV-C absorption.
  • Work well in areas of high Calcium Hardness (over about 300 ppm). Areas of hard water will tend to be scale forming. Scale WILL form on UV-C tubing preventing its effectiveness.
  • Work as a stand alone sanitizing system. UV-C is meant to work as a supplement with chlorine, salt, bromine. Ionizers (Nature2, Frog, etc), biguanides (Soft Swim, Baquacil, etc) are not compatible.
  • Oxidize anything. Shock treatments (using either chlorine or non-chlorine shock products) must be done regularly to oxidize contaminants and certain other unfiltered matter.

Keep in mind that the way that UV systems are constructed, they must be properly maintained all of the time in order to be effective. I mentioned above that UV is rendered ineffective when the pool water is cloudy. The UV light cannot penetrate the turbidity of the water. The water must be clear. The same holds true of the UV generator.

The bulb of the UV generator is typically surrounded and protected by a quartz tube. The problem is that the quart tube will get cloudy; and it will get cloudy quickly. How quick? The “occlusion rate” (how cloudy it gets) is, on average, about 5% per week. What does that mean to you? It means that after about 7 to 8 weeks, almost 50% occlusion will have occurred. Or in other words, only about 50% of the UV light is able to work.

In areas of high calcium hardness or high scaling or hard water or high metals (iron, copper, etc), the UV generator tubing will scale and cloud even faster. Proper, weekly chemical cleaning of the tube is essential to remove and eliminate scale and naturally occurring bio-film build up. Using a bio-film remover such as AquaFinesse Pool Water Care tablets will aid in the cleaning. Otherwise, clean with a mild acid cleaner.

Is a UV-C system right for you? You will have to answer that question. The price range for a good UV system for the average swimming pool is anywhere from about $1300.00 to $2500.00. That’s a lot of money and can purchase of lot traditional good, hard working chemicals and products.

Do your research. Anyone claiming bacteria kill is completely misrepresenting the product. Remember, if it sounds too good, it probably is.

Vitamin B2 – Riboflavin Benefits, Deficiency and Sources

Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) is a member of the B-group vitamins. It has a fundamental role in cellular oxidation. It is a co-factor in a number of enzymes involved with energy metabolism.

Sources: Its richest natural sources are milk, eggs, liver, kidney and green leafy vegetables. Meat and fish contain small amounts. Cereals (whether whole or milled) and pulses are relatively poor sources but because of the bulk in which they are consumed, the contribute much of the riboflavin to Indian diets. Germination increases the riboflavin content of pulses and cereals.

Requirement: There are no real body stores of riboflavin. Daily requirement is 0.6 per 1000 kcal of energy intake.

The most common lesion associated with riboflavin deficiency is angular stomatitis, which occurs frequently is malnourished children and its prevalence is used as an index of the state of nutrition of groups of children.

Studies conducted at National Institute of Nutrition in India showed that sub clinical riboflavin deficiency (as judged by the erythrocyte glutathione reductase activation test) was present in over 80 percent of low-income group children and adults. Hypo-riboflavin sis, even when severe, seldom incapacitates the individual, but it may have subtle functional effects such as impaired neuromotor function, wound healing and par haps increased susceptibility to cataract. Riboflavin deficiency almost always occurs in association with deficiencies of other B-complex vitamins such as pyridoxine; it is usually a part of a multiple deficiency syndrome. Swine Flu – Swine Influenza – What it is and Some Basic Tips About How Not to Get Infected

Unless you have been lying underneath a rock or living on some remote desert island you would know that the swine flu is currently the most potentially dangerous pandemic that has arrived on the scene. There are already 1600 reported cases in Mexico with 149 deaths and already over a dozen cases in San Diego it has started to really scare many people, especially me since I currently live in the San Diego area and I have all ready seen people starting to wear masks over their mouths. The disease also has spread to Canada, New Zealand and Israel. What is this swine flu, what do we currently know about it and what we can do to prevent ourselves from being infected with it in the near future.

The first thing we need to do is understand what the swine flue is. The swine flue is basically a swine influenza or disease of the respiratory system of the pig that has somehow mutated itself into a form that is infecting humans and is now known as the human swine flu or by its scientific name H1N1. The problem with diagnosing human swine flu is that the symptoms are very similar to the regular flu viruses. You would expect symptoms like couping, aches all over your body and excess coughing but unlike the regular flu virus this one can get much worse and can lead to death (death). The virus is also spread in the same fashion that the regular flu is spread, sometimes coughing or sneezing.

If you currently live in the zone that is swine flu infected or close to that area there are some easy precautions that you can take.

If any of you remember the Sars outbreak in china you also would remember that wearing gasmasks became a very popular way to help stem the spread of the virus. There are different types of gasmasks that are available in the market these days. Do not go for the cheap plastic gasmasks that are worn around the Halloween holidays or imitation masks. I am talking about a full gas mask that not only will prevent the spread of viruses but it's also very good to use just in case of biological warfare that could happen in the future. This way you would purchase a full gas mask which you not only can save but can also have a practical second use just in case an actual biological warfare attack should have been. This way you are protected in both cases. These types of gasmasks are usually worn around the large group of people such as college campuses or libraries in which there is a greater chance for you to contract the human swine flu just from someone sneezing or coughing. If you live around a designated risk area you should actually avoid college campuses or places with many people altogether.

Another thing you can do as an extra measure of precaution is to wear the plastic gloves that you have seen doctors and nurses wear during surgery. You would be very surprised at how many infected things the human hands touch each day. Also remember to avoid public bathrooms as much as you can as they are also another area in which infection can spread quickly. If you must use a public bathroom then please make sure that you wash up thoroughly with extra soap to make sure you are really clean when coming out. Always have a pair of throw away plastic gloves handy with also.

President Obama has also asked Congress for 1.5 billion dollars to help combat the spread of this disease, but I think the most effective containment would be to have a stronger containment of our borders. If just a few people can cross over the border unregulated and they are infected, who knows what kind of damage that could or how many people they can infect.

If ever there was a legitimate reason for me to start cleaning my room and keeping it clean, this is certainly the wake up call I wish I did not need.

The Omron HEM-650 Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor With Advanced Positioning Sensor

The Omron HEM-650 can be used on either wrist to make measurements, but it is advisable to always use the same wrist for consistent readings. If the Right Wrist is used then the Right Wrist Measurement must be selected. This is indicated by the letter “R” in the bottom LHS of the display.

The unit has built in IntelliSense technology exclusive to Omron that automatically inflates the Cuff to the optimum level for both comfort and accuracy of measurement. Once the reading is complete then the Cuff is deflated.

As with all Omron Blood Pressure monitors, accuracy is second to none, the Omron HEM-650 being no exception. In order to get the best readings an averaging system is built into the unit. Up to 3 readings can be averaged providing they were taken within a 10 minute period of the last reading.

After endoscopic treatment for gastric ulcer about 20% of the patients have developed recurrent bleedings and a part of them encountered life-endangering problems. Fewer patients needed to be hospitalized longer in those with Omeprazole compared with the placebo group.
