Topic Sensitivity in the Health Classroom

Where do students learn the most about everyday matters in their life? Here is a hint, it is not the math classroom, the English classroom, or the history classroom. That's right its the health room. Students learn more about how to deal with every day real life situations in the health room then any other bedroom and can implement what they learn right away in real life situations. That makes teachers who teach health one the more important teachers in the building because they are teaching students how to live life healthy and to the fullest. The health classroom needs to be a place where students feel free to open up and express their feelings on the various topics that are brought up, and in order to do that the teacher has to encourage openness and be sensitive to certain topics that are being taught .

Anytime where a student could get upset about something being taught the teacher must be sensitive on how the information that is being conveyed is done appropriately to ensure that the student does not become upset. A topic like death and dying for instance is a very touchy subject, especially if you are teaching it in a high school. Students may have recently lost a grandparent, parent, friend, or pet that was close to them and could be going through a whirlwind of emotions. To keep a topic sensitive it is a good idea to have a solid set of class rules that encourages openness, respect, and confidentiality within the classroom.

Some topics are less sensitive and you can try and have some fun with them and possibly even encourage humor while teaching it. For example sex education will always have humor because no matter how old some people get they will still giggle when it comes to sexual topics. As long as the humor is done tastefully and respectfully, as to not offend anyone's sexual preferences or culture. Humor encourages participation, so when the topic is not too sensitive like, first-aid or family life humor should be used. However, in topics like obesity and dying humor should probably be kept to a minimum in order not to upset anyone. To encourage participation in these topics telling a personal story is a good way to set the mood of serious but open environment. When students see that you are willing to share a personal story it makes them more comfortable and are more likely to follow your example if you can be serious and share your story that may be something similar to what a student in your class has experienced.

Overall you must look at your topic and your students and decided whether or not the topic is appropriate to have some fun with or if it needs to be kept serious. After you make that decision it is up to you to find ways to encourage participation and openness from your students to make your lesson run smoothly and have them get the most information and knowledge out of it as they can.

Injections – How Much is an ml, cc, IU?

I. U.= international unit. This is a unit used to measure the activity (that is, the effect) of many vitamins and drugs. For each substance to which this unit applies, there is an international agreement specifying the biological effect expected with a dose of 1 IU. Other quantities of the substance are then expressed as multiples of this standard. This also means that this measurment is not based on sheer volume or weight of the substance, but rather the effect.

ml = milliliter. This is a VOLUME measurement. it is 1/1000 of a liter. when talking about water or similar liquids, it is equivalent to one cubic centimeter.

cc = cubic centimeter. This is also a VOLUME measurement. Most syringes measure their capacity in cc’s. If you have a 5cc syringe, it will hold ~5ml of liquid in it.

mg = milligram. This is a WEIGHT measurement. It is 1/1000 of a gram. the amount of chemical substance is often measured in milligrams. For injectable solutions, this will be reported as a concentration of weight to volume, such as mg/ml (milligrams per milliliter). In the case of orally administered substances, the weight of chemical is labeled, athough the actual weight of the pill/capsule may be much higher, because of the use of filler substances. This means that a small pill may be much more potent than a large pill, so don’t judge a pill based on its size, but the actual amount of substance for which it is labeled as.

mcg = microgram = 1/1000 of a mg (milligram) There are one thousand micrograms in one milligram.

Conversion factors:

1000 mcg (microgram) = 1 mg (milligram)

1000 mg (milligram) = 1 g (gram)

1000 g (gram) = 1 kg (kilogram)

Examples putting it all together

Say a user has some Drug XYX from two different companies. One is ‘XYX-300’ from QV, and one from BM which is ‘XYZ-100’. Both of these are XYZ DRUG, but they have different concentrations. What this means is….

for the XYZ-300:

if you take 1 ml (one milliliter) of this solution, it will take up ~1cc (one cubic centimeter) of space in the syringe. There will be 300mg (three hundred milligrams) of XYZ in this dosage.

for the XYZ-100:

if you take 1 ml (one milliliter) of this solution, it will take up ~1cc (one cubic centimeter) of space in the syringe. There will be 100mg (one hundred milligrams) of XYZ in this dosage.

If you put the syringes side by side, they appear the exact same, so what is the difference? the XYZ-300 has a concentration of 300mg/ml, while the XYZ-100 only has a concentration of 100mg/ml. This means that the syringe with XYZ-300 has three times (3x) the amount of DRUG XYZ in the same exact volume as the syringe with XYZ-100.

Honey For Wound Healing

It may come as a surprise that I would advocate something as simple and inexpensive as honey. But the health benefits of honey are astounding, particularly when it comes to healing the skin. Honey is a skin infection of worst enemy, and healthy skin's best friend. It is strongly antibacterial and antifungal, yet moisturizing and soothing to wounds.

In 2005, just as I had finished chiropractic school and was ready to fly back to Denver, I sliced ​​my hand on a sharp wicker basket, and the wound was terrible. I put bandages and some Neosporin on it, but it did not seem to heal all that quickly. A few days later, while at a naturopathic convention in Arizona, I recalled reading that honey was an exceptional wound healer, so I tried putting some on a bandage over my wound before bed. I was astounded at how much better my hand looked and felt when I woke up – it was probably 75% better overnight! Since then, I've seldom overlooked honey's role in healing damaged or infected skin.

The antimicrobial effects of honey have been tested and proven many times. In the 1930s, a bacteriologist by the name of Dr. WG Sackett from Fort Collins, Colorado, wanted to prove that honey actually harbored disease, so he placed various bacteria on cultures of honey. The results shocked him. Bacteria that caused typhoid fever, dysentery, chronic pneumonia, peritonitis, pleuritis, and suppurating abscesses all were killed within a few days – and often within a few hours. Since then, studies done as recently as 2005 have shown that honey also inhibits the growth of E. coli , Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans – three organizations that have been plaguing the general population (and health care facilities in particular) tremendously in recent years. It's exciting to think that honey could potentially be used to treat Staphylococcus aureus infections that are resistant to powerful antibiotics such as methicillin and vancomycin.

Honey has been documented in medical journals as an effective treatment for diabetic and venous ulcers, even when all other measures (ie, antibiotics) fail to bring them under control. A 2003 study found that a mixture of equal parts honey, beeswax, and olive oil is effective in reducing the itchiness, redness, and scaling associated with eczema and psoriasis. And a pilot study completed in 2005 reported that this same mixture is effective in decreasing the bleeding, itching, and pain associated with hemorrhoids and anal fissures.

Of course, as a practitioner of natural medicine, I strongly advocate the use of honey in helping skin wounds and even conditions like eczema and psoriasis to heal. The advantages are numerous: It's natural, safe, inexpensive, readily available, painless, soothing, and effective. And despite most importantly – especially from a public health perspective – it does not contribute to antibiotic-resistant organisms.

How Can Essential Oils Restore a "Leper" to Society As in the Bible Stories?

One of the ways anointing with essential oils was used in Biblical times was for healing and restoring those who were sick back to the community-especially the lepers.

Anointing with oils was used for soothing of wounds and referred to in other books like the Apocalypse of Moses as an “oil of mercy” and as a cure for every kind of illness. The idea that oil conferred health and well-being is the significance of a rite in the cleansing of the leper found in Lev 14:15-18. We need to remember that any kind of “icky” skin condition was classified as leprosy-this might include Hansen’s Disease (what we know as leprosy today), eczema and psoriasis to name but a few. The Leviticus passage is not a purification rite but the conveying of life as is suggested by the anointing of the head. The entire rite indicates that the formerly ostracized person is now accepted once more into the life of society. This is such an interesting account for if you know anything about the Vita-Flex points in the body, these three are significant. The priest was to put some of the oil on the tip of the right ear-a reflex point to release guilt. Then he put oil on the thumb of the right hand and the big toe on the right foot which are both reflex points for the brain and pineal gland-the center of the body’s communication systems and the place where emotional memory is stored.

“The priest shall take some of the log of oil [a liquid measure] and pour it into the palm of his own left hand, and dip his right finger in the oil that is in his left hand and sprinkle some oil with his finger seven times before the Lord. Some of the oil that remains in his hand the priest shall put on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, and on the thumb of the right hand, and on the big toe of the right foot, on top of the blood of the guilt offering. The rest of the oil that is in the priest’s hand he shall put on the head of the one to be cleansed. Then the priest shall make atonement on his behalf before the Lord.” Lev. 14:15-18

The oil used in this particular ritual was that of cedarwood- one of the oldest oils known to man. It was used to cleanse lepers and evil spirits-used in similar ways as sandalwood. The Egyptians and Sumerians were using it over 5,000 years ago for embalming, as a disinfectant and for other medicinal purposes. For biblical people, this oil symbolized abundance, fertility and spiritual strength. It is still used as a temple incense by the Tibetans and is employed in their traditional medicine.

Oil in the Old Testament appears fundamentally as a source of strength, vitality and life. To possess an oil was evidence of wealth and a mark of the nation’s prosperity. Anointing someone with oil paid the person great honor. So it was spoken of as bringing joy and gladness to festive occasions. Oil created bonds between parties where the anointer showed his authority and assured his support and protection. And in sacred contexts, anointing with an oil acquired the weight of theology and of holiness.

The Fainting Goat

Fainting goat has its lineage to the domestic goat, but its muscles freezes for nearly ten seconds or more, if there is starting of this goat. Animal may collapse on one of its side, without any pain. Fainting got this typical character due to the hereditary disorder of genes named myotonia congenital.

Fainting is not true as freezing is the muscular phenomenon without any relation to nervous system. The stiffness rate will vary significantly with individual goats, and it has its relation with age, rate of fright, purity of species etc. When they are startled, younger false men tend to get stiffen and then fall over, while older ones spread legs of the heads and continue with their run in an awkward as well as stiff legged condition.

Fainting guys are also known by the names such as Nervous, Tennessee Fainting, wooden leg goats, Scare goats, Myotonic, stiff leg goats etc. Fainting goats are mainly available in black and white colors, though common colored goats are there. Can Writing Actually Improve Your Health?

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, writing about stressful life events helped reduce symptoms of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis in patients with these chronic illnesses. The effects of the writing exercise were still evident four months later and resolved in clinically meaningful improvements in patient symptoms.

Interestingly, studies showed that asthma patients who wrote about their most stressful life events showed a 19-percent improvement in lung function; Similarly, rheumatoid arthritis patients had a 28-percent reduction in symptoms.

These findings add to a growing body of evidence that links mental and emotional health to physical well-being. Although researchers are not sure exactly how expressive writing can lead to health improvements, they theorize that writing help people cope with stress, and stress – as well all know – clearly impacts health.

University of Texas at Austin psychologist and researcher James Pennebaker believes that regular journaling strengtens immune cells, called T-lymphocytes. He theorizes that writing about stressful events helps you come to terms with them, thus reducing the impact of these stressors on your physical health.

Advice to Parents on Childhood Measles – Part II

In Part 1 I explained how a lack of knowledge about measles symptoms and resistance to MMR has resolved in some parents starting up 'measles parties' to ensure that their children's treatment measures early and so gain immunity that way. This is mistaken in my view and many people are unaware that measles is still a major killer. In part II I will explain to parents what the measles symptoms are, in what order they should appear and when to call a doctor.

As a parent you should learn how to recognize measles symptoms. If your child has had the disease, or is immunized, you probably do not need to know this, but if you could not save a life by being aware of the most important measles symptoms and when to get medical help. Back in the 1950s and 60s they all knew measles symptoms when they saw the, but not now, so let's try to spot them in the rough order in which they normally appear. It's not easy since many childhood infections have similar symptoms. However, they all have at least one which is particular to that disease.

Measles symptoms:

Measles frequently start with symptoms similar to those of a cold or the flu.

1. First a runny nose and a 'sniffle', followed by a sore throat .. A typical 'barking' cough can then develop. So far, you would not think 'measles' The eyes will puff up, may become watery and get red and sore looking. If you know of a possible measles contact you can now get suspicious.

2. A slight increase in temperature will develop, and will increase to around 39 Celsius (102F). The child may shy away from the light or close her eyes when a light is switched on. At this point you may want to call a doctor. If so, you will catch the disease early, but the symptoms are not yet definitively indicative of measles. Most parents will still regard these symptoms as a 'bit of a cold' or a 'touch of the flu'.

3. You may not notice this, but about 2 to 3 days after the first symptoms appear, your child will get small spots on the inside of the cheek, round about the molars, called Koplik's Spots. These look like small red bumps with tiny grains of sand or salt in the middle. These may last less than a day and sometimes even appear within the first 36 hours. If you are with it and aware, you will see this, and you should call your doctor at this stage. This the definitive measles symptom. No other infection shows Koplik's spots. These spots disappear as the main rash appears. They are photographed on my website.

5. The temperature will probably have reduced a bit by now to 37 – 38C (just at or below 100F). You think maybe she is getting better.

6. The main rash starts to appear about 1 or 2 days after the Koplik's spots. It forms small spaces which join together to form blotches. Definitely doctor time! There is a picture of a measles rash on my website.

7. The rash appears on the forehead around the hairline first, then to the neck, body, arms and legs. By this time you will have called a doctor and your child is diagnosed with measures unless you have an inexperienced doctor, when samples may be taken to identify the virus.

8. The temperature increases again to over 40C or higher (105F). No need for samples now – if the Koplik's spots were missed, this is definitely measles, but by now it is dying out.

9. The rash lasts about 4 days then starts to disappear from the head down. The whole process, from start of symptoms to disappearance of the rash, takes about 10 days on average. The rash itself last about 6 days.

A person with measurements is infectious from 4 days before the rash appears to about 4 days after it has appeared, so it can be passed around before any measles symptoms show.

Those most at risk are:

Young children under one year old. Malnourished people. Children who have depressed immune systems, such as those on some cancer treatments or are infected with HIV or AIDS. Children suffering from a Vitamin A deficiency. Pregnant women: the infection can cause miscarriage or premature delivery.

It is said that a doctor's surgery can be a dangerous place. Measles is extremely contagious, and around 90% of close proximal contacts will catch the disease. If any of the above high risk patients are present in the surgery waiting room when you take your child suspected of having measles, you may be placing them at special risk.

Doctors may not like this, but for this reason alone I suggest that you call a doctor rather than take a child suspected of having measles to the surgery. This is another argument against those who would rather have their child catch measles at a measles party than be given a vaccination to prevent them from contracting it.

Tetanus – Who Gets the Immunization Shot? How Often? Why Do I Need it?

Clostridium tetani is a bacterium. Tetanus bacterium is usually found in the stomach and intestines of horses, it does not bother them. Wherever horses defecate on the ground, there is tetanus that is virile for probably thousands of years. Spores from the sealed pyramids in Egypt have regrown. This is because the bacterium of tetanus usually looks similar to a lollipop. The tail or handle of the lollipop is filled with balls called spores. Spores are very resilient and can survive in different environments for thousands of years. When placed back in the favorable environment, they develop and grow into new bacteria.

If Tetanus in dirt gets under fingernails and on healthy unbroken skin, there is no problem. If you get a cut or laceration and get the spores into an open wound or deep abrasion of skin or in orifices like the mouth, nose, eyes, sinuses, ears or rectum, tetanus spores may grow and form new tetanus bacterium. The tetanus toxin that causes the damage is a naturally occurring by-product. It is emitted from the bacteria. Quite obviously, students lean more (if not strictly) towards allowing iPods in school while most educators ban them unequivocally. Let's see how it all weighs out and get an insight for ourselves, whether our children should / should not carry them to school.

Cons:

a. Teachers are bothered that students might be too distracted and unable to listen to them as they conduct their lessons in class.
b. Students may download pornography or inappropriate media and bring them to school, where other students might be affected.
c. iPods may be used as a tool for cheating. Some teachers have overheard students planning to download formulas for math exams and the like.
d. iPods might be a target for theft.
e. Some educators are concerned that students became isolated and antisocial. Instead of tuning into other people, they are left tuned into themselves.
f. Students can become so engrossed in listening to music that they may completely tune out what going on around them, causing unnecessary mishaps.
g. Students may be playing their music too loud and could cause damage to their hearing.

Pros:

a. Students find that listening to music calms them down and then that better at school work.
b. It gives students something to do when there is downtime at school; or while riding the bus to or from school. (Watch a movie or an educational video , sometimes?)
c. Students are able to show their individuality by the kind of music they listen to.
d. Students disagree that they will become antisocial; in fact, they believe it is a good way to connect with their peers, by sharing their music with them (as there are two headphones to split with a friend.)
e. iPods can be used to record lectures in class and listened to when reviewing for exams. This is also favorable when the teacher talks too fast; you can just rewind and listen again.
f. There are available educational podcasts that students can tune in to that can aid them in their learning.
g. Students can install educational applications such as dictionaries, bibles, and calculators that eliminating added bulk to their backpacks / lockers.
h. Audio lessons can be listened to before class thus allowing the students more time to work during class.
i. It could be more beneficial for teachers (who were teaching the same lesson over and over) to record and podcast their lesson. That way they will not miss including important points in their topic.
j. Recorded lessons can be shared with students that are absent.
k. Podcast lessons are much more accurate than reviewing from notes.

What Is Worksite Wellness All About? – A Series – What Is Health Status? (Consider This!)

The field and practice of worksite wellness today basically revolves around three terms – health, wellness and wellbeing. Other terms also seen used include: thriving, flourishing, health promotion, optimal living and quality of life. But the big three are health, wellness and wellbeing.

Since these terms are used interchangeably or as synonyms, I have wondered just how different or the same are these terms? When I framed out this question in my mind, I thought it would be simple enough to just look-up their definitions and I would have my answer.

But, boy was I wrong. Definitions only got me so far and not very far at that. As I was reviewing definitions, it occurred to me that worksite wellness programs today are not even necessarily about health, but more about employee health status. These two terms differ. So how do they differ? Based on the definitions and reading I have done health status is a state at a fixed point in time, as opposed to the more global, encompassing concept of health.

What Is Health Status?

The Stedman's 7th Edition Medical Dictionary for the Health Professions and Nursing (2012) definition is: "The level of health of an individual person, group or population as assessed by that individual or by objective measures."

The Oxford Illustrated Companion to Medicine (2001) defines the state of health as being the "degree to which physical and mental functioning are in equilibria with the physical, biological and social environment."

In his 1997 article titled Health Status Assessment, Stephen Wright uses the definition: "A focus on function and somatic sensation at a particular point in time."

The definition is: "A generic term referring to the health (good or poor) of a person, group or population in a particular area, especially when compared to other areas or with national data."

The Medical Dictionary for the Health Professions and Nursing (2012) definition is: "The level of health of an individual person, a group, or a population as assessed by that individual or by objective measures."

According to the US National Library of Medicine, their definition is: "The level of health of the individual, group, or population as subjectively assessed by the individual or by more objective measures."

The American Thoracic Society definitions are: "Health status is an individual's relative level of wellness and illness by taking into account the presence of biological or physiological dysfunction, symptoms, and functional impairments. affected individual of his or her health status. Some people perceive themselves as healthy despite suffering from one or more chronic diseases, while others perceive themselves as ill when no objective evidence of disease can be found. "

Rice University points out that "there is no single standard measure of health status for individuals or population groups. How health status is determined is an important perspective when applied in a worksite wellness setting.

How Young Living Essential Oils Ease Symptoms From Cold, Flu, Sinus and Ear Infections

Although I started using Young Living essential oils to ease symptoms of depression, I now use them mostly to ease symptoms from colds, flu, ear infections, and sinus infections.

Young Living’s essential oils are the purest essential oils available, and therefore, they work with the body’s natural chemistry, and support immunity by alleviating symptoms without creating any imbalances in the body, or depleting gut flora, which is where the strength of our immunity lies.

For sinus infections, I simply rub the blend R.C. directly on my sinuses, and the powerful way that it opens clogged sinus passages is remarkable. For ear infections, I prefer the blend Thieves, which contains cinnamon, (which has recently been discussed on websites such as Mercola.com for having anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties), clove, lemon and other essential oils that thieves from the dark ages used to protect themselves as they took money from the sick and dead during a plague. Thieves comes in a handy spray bottle, as well, and I love to spray it in my mouth if I have a cold or sore throat. It instantly soothes any discomfort, and I feel like I’m destroying germs and viruses as I spray it.

Whenever any of my children shows sign of an ear infection, I simply rub either R.C., Melrose, or Raven around their ear. I never put essential oils in the ear canal, as this can be very painful. Around the ear is enough, and studies have recently shown that antibiotics don’t work any better than a placebo in treating ear infection. So, using an anti-infectious oil around the ear which also eases pain is a no-brainer for me, and my kids don’t have recurrent ear infections, and we’ve never had to use antibiotics for any kind of sickness, much less an ear infection.

So, in summary, for colds: R.C., Raven, and Thieves. For sinus infections, R.C. For ear infections, R.C., Melrose, or Raven around the ear – never inside. For stomach viruses and fever, peppermint, or Di-Gize.
