3 Must Have Essential Oils to Calm Your Pet

The reason I love animals so much is that they give off an attitude of happiness, innocence and unconditional love to their people.  Our pets are just as happy being a part of our household as we are of having them with us.

But sometimes an animal comes into our life that is a bit “out there!”

For instance, the dog that has an irrational fear of rain and won’t for the life of him go outside to potty during a rain shower.  Or the cat who hides for hours when a friend comes over.  Or, how about the dog with attachment issues that destroys the house while you’re at work?  Any of these sound familiar?

My cat’s, Sammie and Max, love to hang out on our screened-in patio.  But whenever the garbage truck comes rolling in, they flee for their lives!

It might sound crazy to us, but whatever your animal’s fears or wacky behaviors may be, they are completely legitimate in their minds.

Using essential oils on your animals can really take the edge off of their anxiety, big time!

Because of an animal’s heightened senses, they respond very well to essential oils.  In the wild, animals eat specific plants to heal themselves.  In captivity (our homes), the plant kingdom is not readily available.  Using essential oils on your pet gives them access to the vast healing properties of nature.

The three best essential oils to calm your pets are:

Lavender

Roman Chamomile

Peace & Calming® (a blend from Young Living)

These essential oils can be used to support your animal with; fear of rain and thunderstorms, separation anxiety, hyperactivity, trauma/abuse, depression, Illness, trips to the vet’s office, grief/loss of another family pet and any other situation that causes great stress for your animal, such as garbage trucks!

When you apply essential oils to animals, always remember less is more as animals are very sensitive to essential oils.

Also, with animals, it’s best to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil such as organic olive oil.  I recommend one part essential oil to 1 part carrier oil for all animals EXCEPT cats. The dilution ratio for cats is 1 part essential oil to 10 parts carrier oil.

Use caution with cats!

Any of the essential oils listed in this article are safe for dogs and horses, however; cats are a different story! Cats are extremely sensitive to essential oils containing phenols, such as oregano and thyme. Cats can not effectively metabolize phenols because they lack an enzyme in their liver to digest the phenols. Avoid Peace & Calming® essential oil blend on your cat, as it does contain phenols. Lavender and Roman Chamomile essential oils ARE safe for cats.

How to apply essential oils on dogs, horses and cats:

For calming dogs:

Mix 1 drop Lavender, Roman Chamomile or Peace & Calming® essential oil with 1 drop carrier oil.  Rub this mixture on your dogs pads, ears or comb through their fur.  Apply any time you sense your dog is stressed.

For calming horses:

Mix 1 drop Lavender, Roman Chamomile or Peace & Calming® essential oil with 1 drop carrier oil. Rub this mixture on your horse’s muzzle, ears or cornet bands. Apply any time your horse is stressed.

For calming cats:

Mix 1 drop Lavender or Roman Chamomile essential oil with 10 drops carrier oil. Rub this mixture on your cat’s pads, ears or comb through their fur. Apply any time your cat is stressed.

By the way, the essential oils in this article are also good for easing your anxieties, too!  Dilution is not required on humans.  Just apply a drop or two on your wrists, shoulders or behind your ears.

And the next time you’re opening up a bottle of lavender essential oil, share some with your animal friends!  They’ll thank you!

Antitumor Immune Response

Communication between the immune system and tumor cells takes place via both cell-cell contact-dependent receptor-ligand interactions and released cytokines / chemokines. T lymphocytes of the adaptive immune system learn in the thymus to distinguish various self or altered self-structures from non-self-structures present as peptides bound to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I or class II antigens (pMHC). pMHC molecules represent the antigenic universe to ab-T lymphocytes, both the self and the non-self-repertoire.

Gd-T lymphocytes recognize small phosphorylated molecules or non-classical MHCI antigens in a non-MHC restricted manner, and B lymphocytes recognize tertiary or quaternary structures of antigens using immunoglobulins (Ig). A third type of recognition is used by cells of the innate immune system: natural killer (NK) and natural killer T (NKT) cells recognize lack of expression of self (missing self), ie, absence or low cell-surface levels of MHCI and / or MHCII molecules Furthermore, antigen-presenting cells (APC) such as dendritic cells (DC), macrophages, and granulocytes can recognize non-self-structures via toll-like receptors (TLR) or C-type lectin receptors (CLRs) .

Activation of T cells, NKT, or NK cells happens through the interaction of activating receptors (KAR) associated with signaling molecules expressing immuno-tyrosineactivation-motif (ITAM) signal-motifs in their cytoplasmic region. T lymphocytes and NKT cells express T-cell receptor (TCR) / CD3 complexes, and T, NKT, or NK cells express KARs such as NKG2D associated with DAP10 signal-transduction molecules and Ly49D associated with DAP12 molecules. It appears that the high number (~ 10) of ITAMs associated with TCR molecules is necessary to avoid autoimmunity. Inhibition of cell activation by inhibitory receptors (KIRs) such as NKG2A / CD94 is related to the expression by KIRs of ITIM inhibitory motifs in their cytoplasmic tails

Helper T (Th) cells trigger differentiation of precursor cells into CD8 + cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) or antibody-producing B cells. The so-called Th1 cells induces preferentially the production of IL-2 and IFNg and the differentiation of CTL, whereas Th2 cells induces mostly the production of IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 and the differentiation of B cells into antibody -producing plasma cells. When administered to elicit specific immune responses and memory but not tolerance, the antigens have to be presented in the form of cells, particles, or aggregates, or emulsified in adjuvants such as Freund's adjuvants or aluminum salt precipitates. A unifying concept of these phenomena was proposed by late Charlie Janeway.

The innate immune system, NKT cells, NK cells, DC, macrophages, and granulocytes are activated by pathogenassociated molecular patterns (PAMPs) by means of TLR or CLRs. The DC differentiates from immature, phagocytosing cells to mature, non-phagocytosing cells with increased levels of co-stimulatory molecules such as MHCII, CD40, CD80, and CD86 and enhanced antigen-presenting activity. Cells from the innate immune system release inflammatory cytokines that induce the priming of CD4 + Th subpopulations (Th1, Th2, and Th17). Immediately after stimulation, NKT cells release preformed IFNg and IL-4 which direct Th1 and Th2 cell differentiation, respectively. IFNg Triggers DC to produce IL-12, which induces preferential Th1-priming and NK cell production of IFNg and cytotoxicity. A subset of DCs, CD8 + CD205 + dendritic cells, produces endogenous TGFb and is specialized to inductance Foxp3 + Treg cells, whereas another subset, CD8 CD205 and DCIR-2 + (DC inhibitor receptor-2), participates in Th2 responses.

Although stimulation of the innate immune system may greatly help the initiation of adaptive cellular and humoral immune responses, over-activation of the innate immune system represents a risk due to a possible "fatal cytokine storm" However, the cytokine storm is prevented by CD4 + Th or CD8 + CTL, which down-regulate the activity of the innate immune cells by a cell-cell contact, MHC-dependent mechanism. It sees clear that memory T cells are derived from effector T cells by avoiding antigen-induced cell death. In contrast, the subdivision of CD4 + T cells into Th1, Th2, Th9, Th17, and Treg cells is more malleable and demonstrates more functional plasticity than previously thought.

Inexperienced, naive T cells appear to receive different types of "secondary education" when they encounter antigen at various regional sites including tumor micro environments. Besides possessing different effect functions, DC and T cells should be able to migrate to and within tissues. Adhesion via L-selectin induces rolling, activation, and transmigration via chemokine receptors such as CCR7. The interaction between CCR7 and its ligands, CCL19 and CCL21, may balance immunity and tolerance T lymphocytes do not react with self-structures that are expressed in normal physiological conditions, ie, the organism is tolerant to self-structures.

However, thymus negative selection (central tolerance) is not infallible, and self-reactive Concepts and Ways to Amplify the Anti tumor Immune Response 99 T cells with low-avidity TCR do emigrate from the thymus. Such self-reactive T cells are regulated by CD4 + CD25 + T regulatory (Treg) cells (peripheral tolerance). Since, since many anti tumor immunity responses are "autoimmune" reactions, these are often weak in both quantity and quality. It is important to distinguish between the following three levels of low responsiveness to malignant cells:

(1) tumor-specific T cells with high-avidity TCR have been eliminated in the thymus;

(2) tumor cells or their products may induces tolerance (in the sense of unresponsiveness), ie, tumor-specific T cells are present but are rendered anergic;

(3) immune effects recognize tumor cells but are prohibited from performing their natural function due to tumor-associated inhibitory molecules and / or cells.

The latter two phenomena are linked to the fact that resting DC or macrophages in the tumor induces and maintains peripheral tolerance and functional anergy in CD8 + T cells, NKT cells, and NK cells through PD-1 and CTLA-4-related mechanisms.

Brain Skills – Not Drugs For ADHD and Behavioral Disorders

Anyone over the age of thirty who has grown up with ADHD understands that there was not much help available. In fact, there was no name for it, let alone any programs available to help people with the problems they faced. Although the purpose here is not to explain what ADHD is or to tell personal stories or struggles with it, but rather to explain briefly many people’s belief that there are alternatives to drugs, who also believe drugs should be the last alternative in only the most extreme circumstances.

Many programs, classes and courses have been offered in recent years to help cope with learning disabilities. There is a new and exciting “Brain Training” Program that has just recently been introduced.

BrainSkills is a brand-new, up scale, brain training program for enhancing mental skills, your learning and processing capabilities.

First, let us say what BrainSkills training is NOT. BrainSkills is not like schoolwork. The authors seems to have deliberately made it different than classroom and homework assignments. It doesn’t teach subjects like math and history and social studies. It works on the underlying learning skills that are necessary for success in those academic subjects and many more.

BrainSkills training has a positive impact because it’s intense, sequenced and one on one. The exercises are really like physical therapy for your brain. Like games and contests, the training exercises are stimulating and satisfying.

With success comes the desire to do it again and again. As tasks are repeated skills are rewarded and new skills are strengthened.

Society today seems to want to put labels on everything, although many believe that labels for behavioral disorders are just so drugs can be prescribed by doctors, they do seem to make it easier in discussing problems such as ADHD. Aside from what the big drug manufacturers may want us to believe, the fact is that drugs should always be the very last alternative to any problem, certainly at least second to some positive training or learning program.

Foot Care for Diabetes Mellitus

Having diabetes can complicate your life in many ways. It can even cause problems for your feet. How can this happen?

This disease, specifically named diabetes mellitus, is a chronic disorder that is characterized by high blood glucose levels. High sugar levels in the blood can result in tissue and organ damage. Diabetes mellitus is caused by faulty insulin, no insulin, fewer amount of insulin, or changes in the body's reaction to this hormone. Insulin breaks down blood glucose so that it can be used by the body for energy.

The pancreas produces insulin, and diabetes mellitus can be subdivided into two principle types. Persons suffering from Type 1 diabetes have defective insulin producing cells, so that the body can not produce the hormone, or can produce only very low levels of it. On the other hand, people suffering from Type 2 diabetes have resistant body tissues, and will often have a different, more intensive treatment and maintenance regimen. People with diabetes have to eat special diets, avoid certain foods, and take medication that can allow them to maintain good blood insulin levels.

Foot Care

People suffering from diabetes mellitus will often have a hard time maintaining their feet, because diabetes can damage the nerves leading to the feet. Diabetes can also impede blood circulation, especially to the extremities, including the feet. Because of impeded circulation, the feet can be prone to more infections, especially since the immune system will have a hard time targeting infectious agents entering through the feet. People with diabetes will often complain about having stiffer joints, wounds that heal slower, and reduced speed of blood clotting.

Because of these effects of diabetes on the feet, much more extensive damage can occur. For instance, because of an excessive nerve damage, a person with diabetes may have wounds or broken bones in his or her feet, and he or she might not know it. He or she will not be able to manage good antibiotics or ointments to help the wound heal. For that matter, impeded circulation can also keep the wounds in the feet from healing properly, so that people with diabetes can also have foot ulcers. By the time they detect such ulcers, it is too late to heal the wounds by simply applying ointments, and amputation may have to be carried out.

If you are diagnosed with diabetes, then you have to have a good foot cleaning and maintenance regimen in order to avoid infections. Foot care for Diabetes Mellitus involves the following. First, take care that you wash your feet every day, using some mild soap and warm water. Lather your feet well and clean the areas between the toes and on your heel. When you are done, rinse your feet well and dry each part of your foot carefully. If you are wearing closed shoes, use talcum or foot powder to dust your foot and keep moisture out. Be sure, however, to apply only a little powder, and take care not to leave powder to cake in between your toes.

Look at each part of your foot each day, and inspect its bottom using a mirror. Look for sores, bruises, cuts, or changes in toenail color. Look for waving that might be indicative of pus formation. Do not open sores or drain pus on your own. You need a licensed caregiver to do this so that you do not increase your risk of infection. To supplement your foot care, practice good, healthy habits: quit smoking, exercise regularly, and avoid drinking alcohol.

Care for your feet regularly and make sure that they are always well groomed. When cutting toenails, make sure that you cut across the top, and never force your nail cutter into the corners of your toes. When you encounter sharp angles on your feet, use a good emery board or nail file to smoothen your nail out. You want to avoid cutting your foot with your own toenails. Avoid walking around barefoot, and always wash your feet if you step into dirty soil or mud.

When buying shoes, shop in the afternoon when your foot is relatively larger, and buy a shoe that fits your feet exactly. You need comfortable shoes that will not hurt your feet, cut into your toes, or damage the skin of your feet or legs. You need to give your toes a good amount of room to move and wriggle. As much as possible, avoid buying high heels, pointed or narrow toes, or hard shoes that can tax on your bones.

Visit a podiatrist, or foot specialist, at least once a year; and consult with your doctor regularly. Do as much research as you can on foot care for Diabetes Mellitus. Although foot care may seem inconclusive compared with a good diet and proper medication, it should help you deal with diabetes better and still look and feel better both inside and out.

Links Between the Thyroid Malfunction and Obesity

The thyroid dysfunctions as well as the obesity cases have the tendency to multiply very rapidly. Doctors have discovered a connection between the two conditions, and have also explained that weight loss intent might be blocked by thyroid problems.

The thyroid gland is the body's most important control organ; it keeps the energetic metabolism as well as the weight under control. But outer influences like diet, lifestyle and stress have their own role in the glandular function interfering with hormone secretion and maintaining the body in regular limits.

Considering by our daily lifestyles with stress, pollution, industrial wastes, it should not be a surprise to know 20% of the women and 10% of men have thyroid problems. Some of the thyroid suffering does not even know they have such dysfunctions.

According to new studies in the field, scientists have discovered an important role of air pollution, PCB's and petrochemical wastes in the malfunctions of the gland. Also fluoride, bromide and chlorine are proved to slow down the function of the thyroid.

All major problems of the gland directly affect the metabolism due to the connections between the two entities. The thyroid gland is known to be the primer controller of the body's weight and of the energetic metabolism. That is why all toxins produce the elimination of the thyroid hormones from the organism leading to a decrease of the available hormone level. The capacity of burning fat slows down in case of thyroid affections.

Scientists try to find out how the thyroid harmful toxins influence the obesity epidemic. People with overweight problems must know they can not all put the blame upon thyroid dysfunctions. But hypothyroidism could be a cause and must be taken into consideration.

A series of commonly encountered but frequent unknown factors leading to thyroid malfunction are:

1. Food allergies or intolerance to gluten.

2. Selenium-, Zinc, fatty acids- deficiencies

3. The lack of thyroxin or Iodine

Very often, doctors misdiagnose and mistreat thyroid dysfunctions. The general treatment based on Sinthroid does not take into consideration the personal and medical history of every patient in particular. The curing physician must play an active role in the treatment helping you to overcome the disease.

There are a few important symptoms of a slow functioning thyroid: dry skin and hair, fatigue, depression, sluggishness, muscle cramps, constipation, water retention, hair loss, low sexual appetite and menstrual problems.

These symptoms are however vague and general and the disease can sometimes be avoided because of insufficient testing. If you show such signs making you suspect a slow thyroid, see a doctor to start a treatment as soon as possible.

The major steps in recuperation are:

1. Eliminate thyroid toxic food and allergens

2. Exercise more and take saunas

3. Consume only food that supports your thyroid function

4. Eat more vitamin A and D, more zinc and selenium

5. Take medications combining active T4 and active T3 hormones.

Do not forget the major role thyroid plays in your body and respect the signs of a thyroid gland dysfunction.

Anxiety And How To Overcome It

Feeling angry every now and then is normal for everyone. What is not normal, is if it controls your whole life and it affects your choices in a negative way. If this happens, then you should seek professional advice as Anxiety is a condition that needs medical attention.

Anxiety can be healed non-medically but for some advanced cases, either a physician or a psychiatrist may need to be summoned. To free yourself from anxiety, you can try the good old method of easy and correct breathing. If you feel that you are close to succumbing to anxiety, breath as calmly as you possibly can. Do it until you can sense that your breathing and heartbeat becomes normal again.

Making decisions during the early phases of your anxiety can be dangerous. Your decision at that point may not be correct and surely may not be the wisest. Try clearing your mind. If you are attacked with anxiety, you may act overly impulsive. Try to calm down and free your mind. Whisk away all your worries and try to focus more on the problem at hand.

You have to slow things down as an anxious person will have a tension is to hurry things up. Anxiety triggers adrenaline that can make a person have the necessary power to think and work in a single snap. This may affect a person in a positive or negative way but it its best to think before you act.

Do not heed the angry voice you hear at the back of your head. Most of the time, anxiety arises in the way you perceive things. Anxiety is both felt and thought. Try not to think of things that will make matters worse and exaggerate things all the more.

Solicit the help of your family and friends. When anxiety strikes, that's the time you needed somebody the most. They should be able to lead you towards the right path. During this time, your own judgment is not that accurate, so you can not really trust it. Shift your trust to somebody you deeply know.

Anxiety has to be taken out of your senses because it could just lead you to a situation far more dangerous situation than you could have ever imagined. Be mentally sound at all times and there is never a need to be anxious.

Acne Cysts, Severe But Treatable

Acne is a known skin disorder that is caused by excessive secretion of oils called sebum which along with dead skin cells blocks the pores of the skin resulting to formation of pimples, zits or spots. Acne could also be classified on the mildness or severity of the problem which treatments are mostly determined.

One type of this common problem is the cyst, which is known to be the severe form of this dilemma. Cystic acne is sometimes called "modular acne" and got its name from the cysts that form on the surface of skin when acne starts breaking out. Acne cysts are characterized as hard swollen bumps containing pus and that they are painful to touch. In fact, this type of acne is considered as the harshest and the worst form of acne. It may also bleed and discharges may cause incompetent smell. Cystic acne is usually associated with teenagers but may also affect anyone regardless of age, sex or race.

Treatment of this acne cyst is usually considered a long-term procedure which takes an estimated time of about six months to accomplish. Proper treatment of these cysts should be followed to avoid scars after.

What are proper things to do if you have Acne Cysts?

Proper hygiene is very important if you have acne and most especially these acne cysts. The affected area should always be clean and touching it frequently or unnecessarily should be avoided. There are cleansers available on the market for this purpose. Squeezing, popping or pricking the cyst is no-no because it might lead to further infection and spreading of bacteria. Proper diet could also help maintain and restore healthy skin, detoxify our blood getting rid of toxins that removing acne cysts. Diet should include plenty of fruits and vegetables as well as whole grains, seeds and nuts.

What are the treatments available for acne cysts?

For the infection and bacteria, skin experts prescribe antibiotics such as tetracycline and erythromycin. Also, tea tree oils from Australia and neem paste from India contained in acne treatment products such as soap and lotions are effective remedies for acne cysts. The use of retinol, benzoyl, peroxide, and salicylic acid promotes healing and prevention of the formation of new cysts. Vitamin E supplements also play in healing of the skin as well as the cyst. More advanced way of treatments are micro-dermabrasion, dermabrasion, chemical skin peels, acne surgeries and laser procedures that work for easy removal of these acne cysts.

Breast Growth – Stimulating Further Breast Growth in Women

Breast development or breast growth is a normal part of any girl during puberty or any part of a woman. This is due to changes which take place in the hormonal balance within the body. This is mainly due to estrogen, a hormone found in any women. And hormone, very well known as adrenalin also play an important role in this regard.

For woman who has not yet realized their full breast growth potential there are several natural options available.

A large proportion of teenagers are going under the knife to have larger, bigger and fuller breasts. Having greater fuller and firmer breasts is considered a status symbol in the society and advances the confidences of all women.

The new craze of natural breast enhancers, typically herbal pills and creams, now offers opportunities to all women, young and old, to enhance their breasts naturally without going under the knife. These natural breast enhancers activate the glands as mentioned above to stimulate and develop breast growth.

Women who have been conscious of their small breast size and have lost their self confidence due to this reason can take control of this situation and develop their breast tissues in and around the breast area through various breast enhancement methods. This can done either by taking herbal enhancers and through natural breast enhancement exercises.

The better part is that since the enhancement would be all natural you would not have to worry about medical complications arising due to breast implant surgery.

So if you are one of the few who desires to have bigger, fuller, firmer and more beautiful bust line without going under the knife there are several options available.

3D Airframe Stress Fracture Visualization Tools Discussed

Can the latest futuristic 3D visualization software assist in assessing aircraft fatigue in high time airframes? Can this new innovation assist in helping NASA with space shuttle safety? All this new technology holds promising safety uses in transportation indeed. It was there for brought up recently between a couple of Think Tank participants when Swift from Las Vegas stated;

“I was thinking that it would possibly show stress factors in 3-D objects, particularly aircraft. Even though there are ways they test for metal stress, something always appears to occur. I don’t know if they look at how an object would fold to become the shape if it was constructed of paper, but it would be interesting to see if points were different.”

Well now if you look at the granularity being used in Video Games these days you can see how things work like this so this visualization could indeed help instantly identify problem areas. I always enjoyed building; Balsa Wood, dope and fabric and models because you would cut out the material in a sheet and fold it around the aircraft into place, from linear to 3D and since you could see through it, it gave you a 4D perspective. In the future remember the skin of the aircraft will be the strength and it will be “see through” sense it will be made of carbon nanotube or some other element nanotube construction and thus you will be able to see airframe fatigue readily.

If we resurfaced our older aircraft with extremely high-time airframes with nanotube construction, they would be lighter, better fuel economy and we could re-enlist our aging B-52, C-141, C-17, C-5, C-130, KC-10 fleets for another 40 years? Consider that too?

Business Meeting Thank You Note Samples

After just about any meeting, successful or note, it never hurts to follow up with a thank you note. It shows you respect your client’s time and even if your product wasn’t a good fit this time, your client knows you’re a courteous, professional colleague he’d like to do business with again.

Email or snail mail? You know best; think about the client’s company culture. Usually email is fine, especially if you’re thanking for something informal like time.

Using Stealth Attraction To Meet And Attract Beautiful Women

Whether you like it or not, you have to have tight game if you stand any chance of meeting and attracting women. The majority of men (thankfully) have shocking game when it comes to scoring with the ladies. The fact that you’re reading this article will give you an unfair advantage over other guys going forward, just with the tips you’re about to learn.

I’m going to be sharing some effective strategies that are also known as “stealth attraction” methods and can take a normal conversation with a woman to a heated and sexually driven encounter. Let’s say for example you’re in a bar with some friends and you notice a beautiful girl sitting down. You can take the below techniques and build attraction with that girl in only 10 minutes.

Here they are:

Eye contact

When you’re in a conversation, always make sure you use eye contact to build rapport quickly and show her that you’re focused on her. Even if you’re in a bar or club and it’s extremely loud, make sure you keep the eye contact going but just move your head closer to hers, so she can her you, it’s THAT important.

Touch certain areas

There are parts of a woman’s body that are very sexual and once touched correctly will make her all hot and bothered in a matter of minutes. Simply brush and touch her stomach, legs and the back of her hands… this will make her feel very comfortable around you.

Stroke her back

This works very well if you’re in a club or bar sitting down with a woman. Let’s say you’ve been speaking for a while and you decide to sit down. Take one arm and your fingers to lightly stroke (tickle) her back, no one apart from you and her will know this is going on, but it’s still building comfort and rapport.

Make sure you practice

The cliche of “practice makes perfect” couldn’t be more true and applies to pickup in several ways. Not only does it teach you very quickly what not to do with women, it also allows you to refine what is working and master it, until it becomes second nature. When I say “it” I mean anything that will make you more attractive to a woman, such as body language, eye contact, conversation etc.

So those are three very quick and simple, but powerful stealth attraction techniques. Take them away and practice them, you’ll be 99% ahead of other guys out there that use the same old tricks to pull women.

Causes of Thinning and Balding

Thinning and balding hair is a serious problem these days. It is showing up more and more and is even affecting people at youngger ages and occurs for many different reasons as well. Understanding the cause can help you learn how to treat and even prevent these problems from happening to you.

For women thinning and balding go together. The most common form of hair loss is androgenic alopecia, which is female pattern hair loss. It is genetic and causes a women's hair to thin all over her head until she is bald. This is why you see so many older women with very little hair but it is spread all over their head. A lot of times, it is even the reason women say that their hair is just thin. They are trying to ignore the fact that they are going bald because they do not have bald spots and their hair line is not receding like men's do. Because it is genetic you can actually have your hair tested to see if you will develop this form of hair loss. If you do, the good news is that this hair loss type has the most treatments available for treating it.

Autoimmune diseases, such as alopecia areata, are another cause of thinning and balding. The immune system attacks the hair follicle because it is confused and thinks it is a foreign body, such as an infection. This causes the hair follicle to die, which causes baldness because no new hair can grow from a dead follicle. It can be treated however, in numerous ways. You can get cortisone injections in your scalp, although cortisone should not be put in your body without serious consideration. You can even use creams or laser therapy as well. If your autoimmune disorder is enough enough, you may even be put on medications that suppress the immune system so it can not attack your body or hair.

Even certain medication can cause your hair to become thin and bald. Most people only think of chemotherapy as a hair loss drug. Chemotherapy drugs are only one of many different drugs that can cause you to lose your hair. That is why it is very important to read all the side effects that any drug you take may have. This is even true of any hair loss treatment you use. You should always make sure you know what it may cause.

Even though not all thinning and balding can be preverted, there is still a lot you can do. You can know your risk factors for going bald. You can watch your hairline for signs that the hair loss is starting. You can even change your diet. Most important, if you notice hair loss, you should talk to your dermatologist about it. They are the best ones to diagnose the cause of your hair loss and can even help you come up with an effective treatment plan. They will even help evaluate your progress as you start the treatment.

How to Tell If Your Hair is Thinning

I often have readers with TE (telogen effluvium), CTE (chronic telogen effluvium), and AGA (androgenic alopecia or genetic thinning) who write in and ask me how to tell if this shedding or hair loss is thinning their hair (or if it is growing in thinner.)  After all, often quick, healthy regrowth ensures that you retain a nice, thick head of hair, despite the loss. So, in the following article, I’ll tell you three ways to help you determine if your hair is really thinning or if it is growing back in correctly, with no real net loss.

The Ponytail Method: One quick and easy way to determine how much thinning has taken place is take inventory of your ponytail.  Many women know how many times they have to turn the ponytail holder or band to secure it.  If you’re having to turn it one or more times, then obviously, there is less mass there. Now, some readers will write and say, “well, isn’t the regrowth too short to get in the ponytail?” Yes, it is, but often the healthy regrowth will cause bulk that will allow a similar sized tail.  I can tell you that in the worst times of my shedding, my ponytail went from the size of a quarter, to the size of a nickel, to the size of a dime, but I was regrowing hair all the time.  Unfortunately, there was not enough regrowth and what was there came in thin and fine.

The Hair Pull Test: A dermatologist will often do this test in their office, but you can do it at home.  Do not wash your hair for a day before this.  Take a small amount of hair in between your fingers and count how many hairs are there.  Write the number down and then gently pull.  Then, determine the percentage of hairs that came out.  A healthy head of hair will only have 10% of loss of the hair pulled out. Anything over 25% is a cause for concern.  This means that you are shedding enough to cause over all thinning and a loss of volume. You’ll need to be aggressive with your regrowth regimen if this is your result.

The Hair Density / Quality Comparison: One way to see how well your regrowth is coming in is to identify a long, course, thick healthy hair. Tweeze it out and set it aside.  Then, find a few regrowth hairs that are at least 2 1/2 to 4 inches in length, pluck these two hairs and then compare them to the thick healthy hair.  Are they as thick and dense?  They should be somewhat comparable.  (Hair can become thicker as it gets longer, so a slight variation can be normal.)  The pulled / tweezed hairs should have a darker sheath or bulb that is rounded and large.  This shows that they are being properly nourished within your scalp.

If the regrowth hairs are thin, sickly, flyaway or lighter in color, then you may want to suspect that something (DHT, inflammation, bacteria or yeast) is compromising and miniaturizing your regrowth.)  It is extremely hard, if not impossible, to get your volume back unless your regrowth is of a good quality.

Homeopathy For Allergies – Not a "Placebo Effect"

As with many alternative therapies, conventional medicine has been hasty to dismiss the beneficial results of homeopathy as "placebo effect" – that is, that relief was psychosomatically induced, much as people experience symptomatic relief from placebos used in clinical studies. However, recent research has shown that homeopathy is effective – and not because of the patients' belief in the modality.

In one study, 20 steroid-dependent asthma patients were administered a subcutaneous treatment of a commercial homeopathic combination remedy every five to seven days while 20 others received a placebo. The homeopathy-treated group was able to reduce their steroid use by 100%, while the placebo group was not. The researchers concluded that the homeopathic remedy may have an anti-inflammatory effect on the respiratory system. A similar study examining the effects of a combination homeopathic preparation called Traumeel S (from Heel / BHI) on 103 steroid-dependent asthma. All homeopathic-treated patients were able to significantly reduce their medication while experiencing significant improvements in muscle power and sense of well-being. The place-treated group enjoyed no such benefits.

Several studies have demonstrated the efficiency of Galphimia glauca in treating eyes and nasal symptoms (polinosis) of hay fever. In one, 201 patients with pollinosis were either give galphimia glauca or a placebo. After two weeks, 65% of the homeopathic group experienced significant improvement or cure of eye symptoms and 66% of nasal symptoms cleared. In the placebo group, 44% had relief from eye symptoms and 44% from nasal symptoms. After five weeks, there was a 77% improvement in the homeopathic group for all symptoms compared to only 51% in the placebo group.

Homeopathy has also been shown to be effective in decreasing the pain and relapse of ear infections. In a 1997 study, 103 children with acute otitis media were prescribed single homeopathic remedies, while 28 were treated with conventional antibiotics. The homeopathic-treated group experienced pain relief in an average of two days (compared to three days in the antibiotic group). At the end of the treatment, 70.7% of the children in the homeopathic group were free from recurrence a year after treatment, with only 56.5% free in the antibiotic group. The maximum number of recurrent infections in the reminder of the homeopathic group was three; the maximum in the antibiotic group was six.

18 Ideas For Connecting With Your Child

Ideas and Activities Foster Understanding

"seek first to understand, then to be understood"

Finding ways to connect with your child can seem impossible in today's chaotic times. Here are 23 simple ideas to get the conversations flowing between you and your kids.

  1. Television. Let your child pick out a TV show for the family to watch one night a week. Be sure to watch and then discuss those show afterwards. Conversation starters: What was your favorite scene / character? Why? What was the message of the show?
  2. Music. Sit down with your child and listen to one of her favorite songs. Talk about why the song is a favorite. Share a song with your teenager that was a favorite of yours when you were young.
  3. Do Lunch. Invite your child out to lunch with you sometime soon. Keep the discussion positive. Resist any urges to lecture or criticize.
  4. Fridge Talk. Place news articles or magazine stories, interesting stories, quotes … anything relevant to life. Allow your child to do the same. This can be a fun way to create conversations for dinner.
  5. Plan an outing. Allow your child to plan a family outing. Let her choose the place. She should be responsible for organizing the details.
  6. Workout. Invite your child to go to a local gym or spa and work out with you.
  7. Out on the Town. Children often perceive that adults live boring, dull lives. Break this stereotype with your child by spending a night out on the town together.
  8. Music appreciation. Go to a concert. Afterward, talk about the music, the band, the whole experience.
  9. Give to Society. If you've never done a service project with your family, give it a try. Go on a mission trip or volunteer your family services to a charitable organization. You could visit a rest home, help out at the food bank, or visit a hospital-anything that helps other in need.
  10. Dust off your high-school yearbooks and let your teenager try to find pictures of you in them. Sit down and relate some of your adolescent experiences with your child as you flip through the pages of your personal history.
  11. Ask your teen for a copy of his school newspaper. Read it, choose an interesting article about the school or its students, and discuss it. Even though this activity may seem trite, it shows you care about his world.
  12. Small is beautiful. Do not neglect the small things in life you can do together-baking cookies, shipping, working on the car. Anything that interests your child and that you can do together.
  13. Family night. Pick one night a month (at least) for a family night, with games that everyone likes to play, or a special activity that includes everyone. Let your kids take turns planning it.
  14. Fun stuff. Have your teenager list on a paper all the things she has enjoyed doing with you. Then ask her to rank the activities from most fun to least fun and do one of her favorites.
  15. What class was that? An easy yet important way to demonstrate your interest in and support for your teen is to learn the names of all her teachers, as well as something about her classes. Then, instead of the usual how was school question, you can be more specific with your questions.
  16. Leave Notes. Get in the habit of leaving each other notes telling of your whereabouts. Kids are usually required to inform parents of where they are, but parents rarely tell their kids where THEY are. This shows mutual respect.
  17. Read a book. Go to a bookstore and pick up a book about today's teens. Then discuss some of the things you learned with your teen.
  18. Documentary. If you have a video camera, let your kids make a short documentary on your family that could be given to relatives as a gift. Let them interview members of the family and splice in some highlights from the past year.
