So if one has readings of 130 mmHg and 84 mmHg for systolic and diastolic blood pressures respectively, then the blood pressure is written as 130 / 84 and orally expressed as “130 Over 84”.

Assuming that blood pressure is taken when one is relaxed and at rest, one should be wary of high blood pressure when systolic blood pressure reading is regularly above 120 mmHg and/or when diastolic pressure is above 80 mmHg.

After a Stroke, Do Not Give Up

Although the world as you know it seems to have come to an end, after a stroke, do not give up! Whatever you achieve your normal abilities is large up to you. It may be a fight, but any ability you can regain will be a big victory. Following this brain injury illness, you may simply have weakness on one side of the body or the other. What if. . .

What if you never regain 100% of your former abilities? What next? Well, you make allowances for your disability, and implement any devices or equipment to make your life that much easier. For example, maybe you will never be able to walk steadily again, even if you manage to leave the wheelchair behind. Then, you will need to find a good cane, pair of crutches , or a walker that will help you keep your balance. Do not risk further injury by a nasty fall.

In addition, make sure the bathroom is a safer place. Even under the best of circumstances, it is simply too easy to slip in the tub or shower. You do not want to rattle your brain any further with a nasty goose egg or worse.

In short, it is so important not to give up. Sure, there will be days of total depreciation and frustration. But, when the therapies seem too hard and you want to throw in the proverbial towel, look back to how far you have come back from a devastating and often deadly illness.

Migraine – Or is Nerve Damage Causing Your Headache?

The occipital nerve is a large nerve in the neck. It can be damaged by such things as whiplash injuries and improper patient positioning during oral surgery. Occipital neuralgia causes pain in the back of the head but this can be referred to other areas. This is because the ganglion interconnects with the trigeminal ganglion in the brain stem. Throbbing is often associated with this type of headache because of proximity to the occipital artery.

The auriculotemporal nerve is located near the ear and the top of the jaw on both sides. Common headaches with problems to this nerve are temple headaches. This nerve is commonly damaged in TMJ surgery. it is usually pounding because it is near the temporal artery.

Another nerve that can cause problem is compression of the ethmoid nerve in the sinuses. An ear nose and throat doctor can diagnosis this problem by seeing if the patient has tenderness when using the instrument commonly used to explore the sinuses.

Another type of neuralgia that can be found involves the supraorbital nerve and can be caused by a head hitting a windshield or a punch to the front of the head. Treatment and diagnosis involves injection of local anesthetic with steroid. The headache can sometimes take years before it starts to present problems.

The infraorbital nerve can also cause problems and is often misdiagnosed as maxillary sinusitis.

Nerve problems causing headaches are different than migraines and need to be treated as such. Diagnosis is made by injection of local anesthetic into the nerve that seems to be the problem. Treatment is directed at reversing the underlying pathology. Entrapments are treated with injectable anti inflammatory medications. Always remember you can’t treat what you can’t diagnosis. Patients as well as doctors need to be proactive in finding a potential source for chronic headaches.

Bowen Therapy – Tom Bowen's Legacy

Working closely with Tom Bowen, Ossie began documenting Mr. Bowen's technique. Diligently Ossie took notes and sketched diagrams to correctly reflect the work he saw being performed.

Progress was painstakingly slow. Often what Ossie thought he'd seen turned out to be an inaccurate interpretation of Tom Bowen's work.

All of the movements and procedures were originally approved by Tom Bowen and compiled into a manual.

During Tom Bowen's life he only taught four other people, including Ossie Rentsch, in his technique.

Before his death Tom Bowen cave his blessings to Ossie for teaching the technique. Ossie promised him, "Before I die, your name will be known around the world."

After Tom Bowen's passing in 1982 Ossie kept his promise, teaching the first seminar of Bowen's technique in 1986. Since then trainings have been connected around the world with more than 10,000 practitioners, representing over 25 countries.

As of 2006 Bowen Therapy as developed from the work of Tom Bowen by Ossie and Elaine Rentsch of Victoria, Australia is now a nationally recognized training in Australia. It's registeredd name is Bowtech and the Trademark design for the work is Bowenwork.

A decision to eliminate wheat from your diet can yield nice results in just 2-3 weeks. You will feel better and you will find it easier to lose weight. In addition to burning fat, you may also experience fewer bouts of indigestion, headaches or even skin problems.

Now don’t get me wrong… most fruits are very healthy for us. Provided, of course, that we eat the fruit as a whole. However, drinking just the high calorie juice without the benefits of the other components of the fruit like fiber, is bad for us.

How to Jumpstart Your Weight Loss With 6 Simple Exercises

Before you think about losing weight, the first thing you have to ask yourself is – do you need to? There are many basic ways to evaluate for yourself whether you are fat, heavily obese or if you simply healthy. Most of them are based on simple height weight ratios, of which the most commonly used method is Body Mass Index (BMI). While none of them are 100% accurate, they do provide a good gauge for measure. Usually BMI overrates the weight category of the user, putting normal people into the obese category rather than under.

If you do think you belong to the obese category, the next question to ask yourself is whether you are losing weight because of health or aesthetic reasons. If it’s simple for aesthetic reasons, then chances are that you’re not overweight and you do not need to lose weight. Note that exercising to lose weight is very different from exercising for good health.

If you serious about losing weight for health reasons, you are probably facing a major problem. You lack the muscle to support your own weight and as a result you tire too easily to keep a sustained exercise regime.

To help you get started, the following exercises are designed with low intensity and impact; firstly, to reduce the risk of injures, especially for beginners and secondly, to make it possible for you to actually achieve them.

Here are 6 exercises that are simple to perform and can be done in the comfort of your own home.

1) Overhead Clap

This exercise is also known as the Buddha Clap. You can do this exercise while sitting on the ground. Start with both your arms fully outstretched to the sides and with your palms facing the sky. While keeping your arms straight, bring both hands at a comfortable speed overhead and clap them together. Return to the original position with arms straight and palms facing upwards.

This exercise appears simple enough, but that’s exactly how it is meant to be. But once you have repeated the action for 10 to 20 times, you will realise it is not exactly effortless. It stretches your back and arm muscles and works your cardiovascular system. Do 20 to 40 sets of this exercise daily.

You can also do this exercise while standing to increase the intensity of the exercise.

2) Twinkle Twinkle Star

If you remember how you danced while singing the nursery rhyme, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, then you should remember the action of twinkling stars. This exercise is exactly that action. Hold out your hands straight in front of you with your fingers open. Next, simply clench and open your fists (it doesn’t have to be tight) repeatedly.

Each time you clench and open your fist counts as one. Do this for about 20 to 40 times daily. This strengthens your shoulders and forearms. Like the Overhead Clap, this exercise can be performed while sitting or standing for better results.

3) Crunches

Most of us should be very familiar with Crunches, however, few of us actually know how to utilise this exercise properly. There is no right or wrong way of doing Crunches, but different ways of doing them have a different result. Since we are looking at weight loss and muscle strengthening, we should be doing our crunches in a slow and steady manner.

Firstly lie flat on the ground and with your knees bent, raise your legs such that your thighs and stomach are approximately at 90o. This is the starting position for Crunches. Next, cover your ears with your hands and bring your upper body up so that your elbows touch your knees or thighs. Hold in the position for 2 seconds before returning to the starting position. All this while, keep your legs as they were in the starting position. If you find difficulty in keeping your legs raised, you can place a cushion or chair to support your legs. Eventually, you should progress to a stage where you don’t need the support.

This exercise trains your upper abdominal muscles. Do this for 10 to 20 times daily. You can alternate this exercise with the alternate crunches where the right elbow touches the left knee and vice versa. The alternate crunches train your side abdominals.

4) Leg Raisers

To start with Leg Raisers, first look for heavy furniture that you can hold on to. Lie down flat on the ground and extend your hands to hold onto the furniture (preferably the furniture legs). Keep your arms half bent. Raise both legs up (keeping them straight, do not bend your knees if possible) so that your thigh and your stomach are approximately at 90o. This exercise can pose difficulty for a large number of us. If you find raising both legs difficult, you can try starting one leg at a time.

This exercise works the lower abdominals, and is especially good for reducing the abdominal fat or belly, as we term it. Do this for 10 to 20 times daily.

5) Knee Raisers

Again, look for heavy furniture that can support your weight at home. This time you will need to hold onto it for support, so make sure the height is comfortable for yourself. Place both hands on the furniture with your body upright and legs shoulder width apart. Start by bending one of your knees and lifting that leg up to your chest slowly. Put down your leg slowly and proceed to repeat the action with the other leg.

Each time you lift your leg and put it down, it should count as one. Do this for 20 to 40 times daily. This exercise builds up thigh muscles.

6) Tip Toe-ing

This exercise is similar to the Knee Raiser. Again, place both hands on the furniture for support with your body upright but keep both legs together. Start by tipping your toes up and down. Do this for 20 to 40 times daily. This exercise builds up your calf muscles.

Each of the above exercises will take you less than 5 minutes, doing all 6 should take you at most half an hour a day. No matter if you’re looking to lose weight or simply to stay active, these exercises are very useful in keeping yourself reasonably active.

These exercises work the major muscles on your body and strengthening them for higher intensity workouts. This is very important especially if you are obese. Since this routine is only for beginners, you should move on to higher intensity workouts after a few months for better weight loss results. However, do not skip ahead to start with more difficult workouts immediately! By skipping the basic training, you risk injuring yourself with exercises that your body is unable to withstand.

Save Someone’s Life With the Heimlich Maneuver

Life is full of surprises, and you may be on the scene one day when somebody starts to choke. Know how to do the Heimlich maneuver in case of emergency so you can go ahead and help somebody who is choking.

 

1. Comfort the victim. A person will start to panic when they are choking. Go to the victim and reassure them that you know the Heimlich manure and begin assistance. Let the sufferer know that he must remain calm, and should follow your instructions. Then get working!!

 

2. Have the choking victim stand. For the Heimlich maneuver to work successfully, the choking victim must be up on their feet. If the victim is unstable or panicking you can help support them.

 

3. Get behind the person who is choking. For the next phase of the Heimlich maneuver you need to put yourself in the right position. Get behind the person who is choking.

 

4. Carefully hug the choking victim. Place your hands around the victim’s chest when you are standing behind the victim. The victim’s arms should be up and away from yours. You have to get a good hold on the person’s trunk.

 

5. Close your hand in a fist. As you are hugging from behind, put your hand exactly in the middle of the person’s chest in the form of a fist. Do not tuck your thumb into your hand; it needs to be on the outside, pointed up. Place your fist above the area of the navel (belly button). There is no time to be modest and it may be required that any heavy clothing worn by the victim be removed to find the proper first placement. Whatever needs to be done in order to keep the victim from choking to death must be done.

 

6. Take a hold of your fist. Create the perfect circle when you grab your fist with your free hand. Do not release your grip on your fist.

 

7. Begin to thrust. Hold your arms closely; with the one hand still closed tight, push inward and up in one motion. You need to thrust hard on the victim’s abdomen. To dislodge the object blocking the victim’s airways, do the strong fisted thrust five times squeezing stronger each time. A firm thrust will also bring air from the person’s airways, making them cough. To do it right, you have to go deep, although it may hurt the victim. Don’t let this worry you! He will always be thankful for your forceful methods when he can breathe once again. Keep doing this until the item they were choking on is expelled.

 

Through out the Heimlich maneuver, it is vital to keep a good hold of the victim in case becomes unconscious. If the maneuver is successful, sit the victim down again and don’t leave him until his breathing gets back to normal.

After the countless hours of product training and skill development and relationship building, your efforts culminate when a prescription is filled at the pharmacy.

When you consider that pharmacists talk to the same physicians that you talk to, about treating the same patients that you talk about treating, it’s obvious that pharmacists play a vital role in your success.

Why wait any longer to establish or improve your relationships with pharmacists in your territory?

A licensed pharmacist is a pharmaceutical specialist. Although physicians are experts in disease diagnosis and treatment, pharmacists are experts in pharmaceutical disease management.

Many physicians rely on pharmacists to train patients to use metered-dose inhalers, blood pressure monitors and injectable medications. Physicians also assume that pharmacists will monitor potential drug-drug interactions and recommend appropriate drug substitutions.

A pharmacist is a patient care provider. He or she is a link between patients and medical professionals, and can triage routine illnesses like a cough, cold or the flu. Patients count on their pharmacist to tell them how to take their medications, what outcome to expect, and how to react if something goes wrong.

A pharmacist is a pharmaceutical sales partner. Pharmacy support is crucial for successful pull-through programs, patient education, and supplemental physician contact. A pharmacist may be able to provide information about managed care formularies and drug pricing, as well as alert you to patient questions or concerns.

Pharmacy calls are sales presentations

Successful pharmaceutical sales reps prepare and execute pharmacy calls with the same care as they approach physician calls.

Deliver your information succinctly and factually. Pharmacists do not prescribe medications and do not want to be “sold” on the merits of your product. They do, however, want to know the indication, dosing, mechanism of action (MOA), pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) profile, and occurrence of side effects. This is vital information for their consultations with physicians and patients.

Close your call by asking, “What can I do to be a resource for you and your customers?

Here are specific suggestions from pharmacists in three different settings that you are likely to encounter in your territory: retail chain, independent and hospital pharmacies.

Retail chain pharmacists’ recommendations:

Develop partnerships with pharmacists. Paul, a New York state-licensed pharmacist, points out that he and physicians and pharmaceutical reps all have the same goal: to provide excellent patient care. “We are all interdependent. The cycle starts with the drug companies and links to the physicians and the pharmacists, who link directly with the patients. We’re all in the patient care business.”

Suzanne, a licensed pharmacist in Tennessee, agrees. “My customers are the drug rep’s end customers. For both of us, “success” means making our customers healthier.”

Chain pharmacists across the country agree that pharmaceutical reps can be more effective if they DO:

o Provide the pharmacist with objective clinical information.

o Invite pharmacists to educational programs with physicians, or sponsor separate programs for their local pharmacy organization.

o Follow through on what they say they are going to do.

o Respect the pharmacist’s time.

o Offer your business card every time. Make it easy for pharmacy staff to contact you.

o Inform pharmacists of any prescription voucher, rebate or coupon programs ahead of time. This gives pharmacy staff time to learn the quirks of the program so that they can facilitate patient uptake.

Paul says, “One of the drug reps in the area launched a prior auth product in a crowded therapeutic class. I stocked her vouchers at each of my stores, and she informed her target physicians of this. Physicians appreciated the simplicity, patients were happy about getting a free trial, I benefited from the increase in customer traffic, and this rep led the country in sales.”

DON’T:

o Make pharmacy sales calls on Mondays or early in the morning.

o Ask a pharmacist to stock your product “to be ready for the first prescription”.

o Ask a pharmacist for confidential information, such as, “Which doctors are writing my product?”

Independent pharmacists’ recommendations:

Masood runs a small chain of independent pharmacies in southern California. To him, respect is the most important element of a sales call. “Some reps think that because I am not a big name chain that I am not as important, or maybe they do not need to be polite with me. But that is not the way to think of it. I am very busy here, with many customers every day. The smart reps know that I am a big business for them in this city.”

Consensus of independent pharmacists is that reps will be more successful if they DO:

o Provide NDC #’s.

o Understand that pharmacy customers are the first priority. Be patient.

o Educate the pharmacist about potential side effects.

o Ask for the opportunity to schedule an educational lunch presentation.

o Treat independent pharmacists as well as they treat chain pharmacists.

“I’ve worked in both settings, and I’ve seen a lot of drug reps overlook independent pharmacies”, says Alan, a pharmacist in Wisconsin. “Maybe they think that because we’re small we’re not “real” pharmacists. But we have the same educational background, and we have the same interactions with doctors and patients as any other licensed pharmacist.”

DON’T:

o Ask for confidential information.

o Ask a pharmacist to stock your product without a prescription.

o “Sell” the pharmacist.

Hospital pharmacists’ recommendations:

A hospital pharmacy may serve only inpatients, only outpatients, or a blend of the two. Inpatient pharmacies are usually restricted to stocking products that are on the hospital formulary. Hospital-based outpatient pharmacies operate like any other retail pharmacies. They are not usually restricted to the hospital formulary.

Tim is a hospital pharmacist in Maine who welcomes drug reps. “Reps are a great source of information for me. I know that if I tell a rep that a patient had an unusual reaction to their drug, the rep is going to pass that on to their company to investigate. Drug companies are highly motivated to check it out and follow up, which helps me serve my customers better.”

Recommendations for pharmaceutical reps when calling on hospital pharmacies. DO:

o Ask about scheduling an educational lunch presentation.

o Ask for information about the formulary process; offer yourself as a resource for information.

o Ask about the schedule for the hospital P&T committee.

o Know your drug. Be prepared to clarify and support any information that is included in your product PI.

DON’T:

o Ask for a list of physicians who are on the P&T committee.

o Pressure the pharmacist to stock product without a prescription.

o Make a sales call without a clear reason for the call.

Which brings us back to the bottom line: Pharmacy calls are sales presentations. And just like prescriber calls, pharmacy calls are powerful tools to improve patient care and drive your business.
