Functional Electrical Stimulation In Multiple Sclerosis

For clarity purposes the term “ES” or “Estim” is a generic declaration of an external device in most cases, that produces a flow of electrons from one electrode to the other of the same channel. The flow of the electrons produces an ionic reaction in the body in the areas between the electrodes, in most cases motor nerves and muscle tissue.

The most common use of a specific form of ES with multiple sclerosis patients is the term “Functional Electrical Stimulation”, or FES. This is a form of estim where one stimulates motor nerves, at the same time as attempting to move mentally. The breaching of the gap between movement and the brain’s message to move is preserved or restored. The FES process is accomplished with voluntary repeated movement assisted by functional stimulation.

It gets confusing discussing electrical stimulation when one discusses the “flow of electrons” as that is a good description of electricity, but once the flow goes to the body, then it’s a reactive response. Technically from entry into the body one gets what is called “ionic” reaction. That simply is the cells/molecules in the body start losing/gaining electrons and that is what is changing the chemistry of the body.

A quicker method of accomplishing functional electrical stimulation would be to use “medium frequency Infrex interferential stimulation” with volitional movement at the same time. Typical FES applications involve multiple daily sessions ( 5 – 15), for 10 – 20 minutes whereas “functional stimulation” protocols are 1- 2x daily for 15 minutes at maximum output. Functional stimulation is designed to also increase muscle bulk and strength.

The reference to “healing decubitus ulcers” ( bed sores ) is generally a form of estim known as “pulsed galvanic stimulation”, or “high voltage”. This particular form of electrical stimulation involves interrupted direct current ( DC ) charges. The process of tissue generation is created by the choice of either positive or negative currents. The current is 100% positive or negative but it only is administered for brief moments of time so as to not cause any injury during the treatment process.

The “reduce spasticity” can be accomplished by using FES to fatigue the muscle(s) however most studies fail to then continue to use estim for extended time periods to avoid future spasticity. This accomplished by “interferential therapy” over night for 6 – 12 hours either sensory or subsensory. The process of constant, low amperage stimulation of muscles stops spasticity. Spasticity should be prevented, not treated.

The below article cited is a very good summary article written by J. M. Campbell, Ph.D, P.T. explaining some of the electrical stimulation results for multiple sclerosis patients. This field of electrical stimulation coupled with functional movement and exercise has great promise for MS patients as well as other patients suffering autoimmune type diseases.

Increase Male Libido – Dont Look at Trestosterone Levels Check Nitric Oxide Levels First

With male libido many men think that lack of testosterone is the problem but the real cause in most cases is lack of nitric oxide.

If you don’t know what it is then you should – it’s critical for male libido and the erection process.

Let’s take a look at how to increase nitric oxide levels naturally.

Many people simply assume that testosterone is the way to help male libido and there are plenty of supplements out there to help you do it.

The fact is however you should be looking at your nitric oxide levels first, because without sufficient nitric oxide you simply won’t can an erection.

So what is it? Let’s take a look.

Nitric Oxide and the Erection Process

The erection process begins with sensory and mental stimulation in a person’s brain and these impulses are transmitted through the nervous system and trigger the release of nitric oxide in the bloodstream.

This makes the muscles of the penis relax, allowing blood to flow into the spongy tissue and an erection occurs.

Nitric Oxide Decline

Nitric Oxide declines naturally with age.

Problems can be physical problems including, hardening of the arteries which restricts the flow of blood flow to the penis.

Nitric oxide is produced in several areas of the body.

One of the critical areas of production is in the walls of the arteries.

Arteriosclerosis (plaque of the arteries) interrupts the production of nitric oxide and a prevents the flow of blood, especially to the penis.

The fact is if nitric oxide is not produced in sufficient quantities then an erection simply can’t occur.

For example, one of the reasons smokers suffer impotence is the clogging of the arteries that occurs as a by product of smoking.

The good news is

There are several natural supplements that can help increase levels of nitric oxide and improve general overall circulation.

The best is perhaps L Arginine known as “natures Viaga” – a non essential amino acid, it boosts nitric oxide levels.

80% of men who took 2,000 mgs for just two weeks in a recent clinical test saw better erections and increased sexual satisfaction.

Two other great supplements for overall circulation are Ginkgo and Ginseng, which have been used in Chinese medicine for centuries.

Male libido is complex and can be reduced by many things, but if you don’t have enough nitric oxide then your in trouble.

The three supplements combined work well for many men and will give your nitric oxide and circulation a boost.

So, before you think testosterone levels are low, consider nitric oxide levels and try and raise them first.

Five Reasons You Should Be Taking Fish Oil For Heart Health

If you’ve got a family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, a bit of extra weight around the middle, or a desire to keep yourself as healthy as possible for as long as possible, then you should consider taking fish oil for heart health.

Fish oil contains the essential fatty acid Omega 3 (an essential fatty acid is so-called because our body needs it to survive but can’t produce it by itself). It has been proven to reduce your risk of:

Cardiovascular Disease In studies of over 11,000 patients, taking one gram of fish oil a day reduced the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by over 30%.

Cardiac Mortality The same study showed that risk from sudden death or certain death from heart disease was reduced by 45%!

High Cholesterol Levels A study in Switzerland showed remarkable results: patients who used Omega 3 to treat their cholesterol problems reduced their risk of death by 23% – and those who were using brand-name cholesterol pharmaceuticals showed just a 13% decline – meaning the fish oil was more effective!

Syndrome X This condition, caused by insulin resistance, causes patients to be at high risk for diabetes and also for cardiovascular disease. The DHA found in Omega 3 helps to keep blood thin, lower triglycerides, and keep blood pressure low – all big helpers for people suffering from metabolic syndrome.

High Blood Pressure The so-called silent killer, high blood pressure, usually goes hand in glove with high triglycerides. Omega 3 can reduce the systolic and diastolic blood pressures, lowering blood pressure and saving lives.

If you’re suffering from any of these conditions, you need to be very cautious when choosing a supplement. Since you will be taking high doses to get the best heart health benefits (at least one gram a day), you must ensure that you are getting an ultra-pure, moleculary distilled capsule from unpolluted waters. Be sure to only purchase products that list their origins and guarantee their purity.

There are even more good reasons to take fish oil heart health listed on my website, in addition to the numerous other health benefits to be found. If you’re interested in taking charge of your health, please visit today!

Type 2 Diabetes – Breastfeeding Linked With Better Blood Sugar Control After Pregnancy

Researchers at the University of North Carolina in the United States linked breastfeeding with blood sugar control in eighty-two women recovering from Gestational or pregnancy-related diabetes. Their work was reported on in February of 2018 in the American Journal of Perinatology. It was found women who stopped breastfeeding early had the following…

  • elevated fasting blood sugar readings,
  • high HbA1c levels, and
  • higher weight-for-height measurements.

Normal fasting blood sugar levels should be…

  • less than 100 mg/dL or 5.6 mmol/L when one wakes in the morning.
  • before meals, it should range between 70 and 99 mg/dL or 3.9 and 5.5 mmol/L
  • 2 hours after meals blood sugar levels should be less than 140 mg/dL or 7.8 mmol/L.

Ideally…

  • HbA1c levels should fall below 7 percent.
  • height-for-weight (BMI) should not be over 25.

Getting back to normal after having Gestational diabetes is important to avoid complications. Women with a history of being diagnosed with diabetes during their pregnancy are at risk for developing…

  • Type 2 diabetes,
  • the Metabolic syndrome, and
  • heart and blood vessel disease.

After giving birth women who developed Gestational diabetes have a 50 percent chance of being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes within the following 5 years. Besides breastfeeding the new mother needs to…

  • reach and maintain a normal lean weight,
  • eat a healthy diet, and
  • take part in enough physical activity.

The Metabolic syndrome consists of…

  • high blood pressure,
  • high blood sugar,
  • being overweight or obese, and
  • having abnormal cholesterol and blood fat levels.

Women with a waistline measurement over 35 inches are at risk: it can lead to heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and stroke. Preventing the Metabolic syndrome involves making the same healthy lifestyle changes as for Type 2 diabetes. The women are also advised to avoid smoking.

Preventing heart and blood vessel disease takes the same measures as Type 2 diabetes and the Metabolic syndrome. Preventing developing diabetes during pregnancy involves…

  • having a healthy lean weight before conception, and
  • gaining only the amount of weight during pregnancy as recommended by their doctor or midwife.
  • exercising during pregnancy: this is high recommended.

At 24 to 26 weeks into the pregnancy, pregnant mothers are tested for Gestational diabetes. The test consists of having a sugary drink followed by blood being drawn to learn how well the body is handling sugar. If the diagnosis is made then lifestyle changes, insulin or oral medication may be prescribed.

Various studies have attempted to learn how prevalent Gestational diabetes is in the world. Estimates range from 1 to 14 percent of pregnancies. The number of cases appears to be increasing with the obesity epidemic.

What is the Difference Between a TENS Pain Machine and an Interferential Pain Machine?

How do I decide on a Tens or an Interferential Unit?

What is the difference between tens & interferential therapy?

What is a Tens or Tns machine?

Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulator (TNS) is a small lightweight portable device that goes off and on from 1- 150 times per second, which is referred to as frequency or rate, pulses per second ( PPS).

The tens pain machine can be worn continuously, even sleeping with it on to help the patient sleep. A Tens machine is not addictive, nor like drugs, does it affect ones mental abilities to think and reason. Often if the Tens machine is turned off the pain comes back. There is no residual pain relief generally speaking when one uses a Tens unit. Fro many patients the tens pain machine may be worn continuously.

What is Interferential?

Interferential machines go off and on from 8,001 to 8,150 times per second. This is also referred to as frequency, rate, PPS and there is a relationship between frequency and depth of penetration. The interferential treatments go deeper into the body and affect more nerves. When the electricity is able to penetrate deeper then the better the treatment outcome is for the pain patient.

Is there a difference between treatment times between tens and interferential?

An interferential treatment generally lasts in the clinic for 20 minutes. During the interferential treatment the pain the patient is feeling goes away and, after the treatment, the pain is gone for some time period. The time from the treatment until the pain returns is called “carryover pain relief.”

What is the major difference between the two therapies?

The biggest difference between a Tens treatment and an interferential treatment is the carryover pain relief period. With TENS the pain often comes back shortly after the pain machine is turned off. With interferential therapy the pain is gone and stays away for longer periods of time. As Interferential therapy treatments are increased then the carryover pain relief is extended..

Eventually will the interferential unit not be needed?

What is most likely is when a patient starts using an interferential unit they may need to do 3 – 5 treatments the first 2 days. After the first week or few days then the patient finds they only need to do a treatment every 2-3 days. It is not unusual for a patient who has been in chronic pain for years to do an interferential treatment upon waking in the morning and/or upon going to bed at night.

Then is it best to only use the unit twice or what?

With tens or interferential one can use the unit anytime there is pain present. If using tens or interferential and its difficult to sleep, due to pain, then wear the unit all night long if it helps the pain go away and one can sleep. If using interferential therapy then use the AC adaptor and plug into the wall since the unit will be on for extended time period.

What happens if one falls asleep with an interferential unit on?

Nothing other than the patient is able to sleep. First, that will not be a problem. One will not be harmed in any way. On most interferential units, and on some TENS units, there is also a timer. Most timers can be set for 15, 30, 45 minutes of stimulation, or set on Continuous mode. If 15,30 or 45 minutes of treatment occurs and the unit goes off, but the pain comes back, then switch to Continuous and wear until the pain is gone. The explanation for this is the purpose of tens or interferential is to get rid of the pain signal. Neither a tens or interferential unit is meant for the patient to “feel the unit all the time”. The purpose is for the patient to not be in pain and to not feel pain..

So if the pain machine, whether tens or interferential is not being felt, then does that mean it is not working?

No again the purpose is to not feel pain. Many times after the interferential machine goes off the patient will not feel any stimulation but that is fine and expected. What the treatment goal is for the patient is to not feel pain, not to feel the stimulation.

Second, the main goal with interferential is to extend the time periods when the patient is pain free, which is referred to as carryover or residual pain relief.

Why is that?

Unlike pain medications the goal with interferential is to not have to use the unit, to extend the carryover pain period and not be in pain. With medications it can be the opposite and the patient is increasing the frequency of taking pills, or asking for more or stronger drugs..

So its successful to not need to use the interferential unit?

Yes. The best outcome is when the use of the interferential unit has resulted in fewer treatments because there is less pain and it is not needed..

Third and last, but not necessarily least, is due to some chemical changes that occur in the body, as well as a patient being able to become more active, the real possibility that permanent change is occurring in the body and the unnatural pain impulse is being modified or simply goes away for good may be occurring.

The explanation for that is we know for sure that positive and negative charges affect our cell and tissue structures which includes nerves. Now that a patient can self treat as needed the ability to do such is opening up new possibilities of permanent structural change and the pain impulse is thwarted.

O.K. so how might we tell if this is being successful?

With an interferential treatment the pain will lessen or go away during the first 5 minutes of the treatment for most people. The results will be there within the first 20 minute treatment session. Remember that inferential treatments have been used successfully since the 1950’s and with utmost success. The big difference now is the treatments can be done by the patient at home, work or where needed, and not have to go to a clinic or hospital for treatments.

This new innovation in portable interferential is also much less expensive and does not involve taking off work, scheduling, and having to drive to a hospital or clinic for treatment.

How does one try tens and interferential to see which works best?

Either a tens unit can be tried or an interferential unit and one can see which helps most. Often the combination of using tens sometimes and interferential at other times is best for the patient. Also seek a pain machine that combines tens and interferential together in one unit so both tens and interferential can be tried using the same machine. Switch the treatment between tens and interferential as needed. Tens and interferential units use the same electrode pads, cables etc. so two sets of supplies are not needed, although interferential treatments because of more electrical energy, work best when larger electrodes are used than what is customarily used with only a tens unit.

The Attack Of The Bear

She talked about it; she dreamed about it, she never let it go. This was how a friend of mine regarded her fear of coming across a bear when we would go hiking in the wilderness areas of Idaho. Her character is strong in all other ways. She is kind, hard working, intelligent, prosperous and loving. But when the word “bear” crosses those ears of hers, she turns to Jell-O. In other words, her life is somewhat Un-Bear-Able!

We were hiking last spring in the Coeur d’Alene mountains going for a 10 mile excursion to visit one of the beautiful alpine lakes that are plentiful through out this part of Idaho. We packed a lunch, threw on our backpacks and set off for a glorious day of exercise and becoming one with nature. My friend, however, was nervous and carried a canister of bear spray (kind of like pepper spray only for bears) with her just in case. I assured her that bears were harmless in this area. Only black bears roamed the woods here…no grizzlies I told her. Yet she was set out to believe that a bear was a bear and in her mind, they were all very very bad.

After about an hour of vigorous hiking we sat down for a minute to take a drink of our water and take in the natural beauty that surrounded us. SNAP! went a tree branch just up the trail and there it was…everything she ever imagined in her worst nightmares was in front of her. It was, you guessed it, a big black 10 foot growling snarling bear! Actually, that is how she remembers it. It was actually a small female black bear just crossing the path about 50 yards in front of us. My good friend screamed, grabbed a hold of me and started to shake. I joined in with the screaming part because the first thing you do when you come across a bear is make a lot of noise to scare it off. So I figured, what the heck, I might as well scream too to make her feel better.

Well, the bear scurried off, my friend almost fainted and I laughed till I cried. I gave her a few minutes for her heart to slow down from it’s 160 beats a minute and then I calmly and gently said to her, “You see, bears are not going to hurt you”. She calmly said to me, “We got lucky this time buster”. Well, needless to say, this experience did not help her fear of bears but only increased the intensity of her phobia.

We still go on hikes together and now my friend is more at peace in the wilderness like never before. No, she did not get over her extreme terror of bears. No, her dreams have not stopped. No, she has not made peace with this precious animal. When we returned to our city dwellings after that last hike, my dear loveable sweet caring friend immediately called up a shooting gallery, enrolled in a class to learn how to shoot a gun, and now carries a pistol on her side whenever we roam the hills and valleys of bear country (just in case, she says). My friend feels less nervous and seems to enjoy our hikes like never before. Me, I feel sorry for the poor bear.

Electrotherapy – The Science Of Healing and Restoration of Function

For decades forms of electricity have been applied to the body to make the body heal itself. Originally the use of electrotherapy was to correct a situation where the body was not healing itself. One of the first uses for tissue healing was to use what was then called “high voltage” current, applied to non healing wounds or decubitus ulcers. Wound specialists would apply two electrodes around a wound, or in some situations one electrode in the wound and one out, and turn the unit on for approximately 20 minutes 3x week to get the wound healed. The claim was the form of electrical current, known as “dual peaked spike wave”, was the effective form of current. The high voltage unit did as expected and bed sores started healing when there was sufficient nutrition for the body to heal.

Later the simple device called a “tens machine” also helped heal bedsores. The tens machine had a current, or wave form, known as “biphasic square with a net 0 DC effect”. Not easy to understand is it?

Literally there are Billions ( that’s literally with a B ) of potential wave form varieties and the “game” was on to claim some form of special knowledge that your machine did the “one and only” waveform that worked for the specific condition of the patient. Soon we had what are called “bone growth stimulators”, or “non union fracture machines”, which were applied to crushed bones which were not healing. The orthopedic physician would stabilize, cast, treat, however if the bones would not unionize the result was amputation. A dangling limb causes all sorts of issues for the overall health of the patient. Soon another electrotherapy machine emerged and there was another “new” wave form, or current device, that supposedly “exclusively” healed bones. Again a mystery of the “secret current”.

Today it is becoming common practice among orthopedic doctors, soon to be common with general surgeons, to use a tens machine to “control pain”, but are these devices also increasing the rate of healing?

My hopefully educated opinion is the waveform, and the current are secondary in accelerating the healing processes of our body. The commonality of practically all these devices is the changing polarities. Most of these device alternate between positive and negative charges. In understanding what excites our cells to act and, do so quicker, it’s almost always the changing of tissue and space between cells of polarity. Like a magnet when you put north end to north end you repel, south to north and you attract. Bones have polarities on each end of a bone, and on the bone particles. This is the same state for cells within our body when damaged or diseased. When one end of a bone, or cells within, becomes more positive, and the end to reattach to is more negative, then they grow together or unionize. The waveform is not doing it but the physical attraction of positive and negative charges, are the healing agents.

Soft tissue and bone tissue cells grow and replicate the same way. The active agents responsible for the emerging use of electrotherapy in tissue repair is not a waveform per se, it’s the understanding of how our body uses negative and positive charges to heal and attract.

Green Tea and Acne – Know the Association

It is difficult to avoid pimples, which keep occurring regularly damaging your skin. Nobody can avoid this skin disorder even if your skin is smooth, or you are on a balanced diet. The touch of acne is quite common, specifically now-a-days when the pollution and stress levels are at an all-time high. Acne is something you can never ward off.

This could often be difficult and appear to be a challenging task. In this article, you can get to know how you can get rid of acne facilitating green leaf tea, in other words the association between green tea leaf and acne.

Hormonal Imbalance Leads to Acne

The most significant cause behind acne is the sudden and frequent hormonal imbalance. Green tea is rich in components that can cut down the inflammation process and alleviate the hormonal disorder.

Acne pustules, which are present in acne, are the cause that can lead to severe skin inflammation. Staphylococcus Aureus, a type of bacteria, is the major reason resulting to inflammation, which is found in acne. These bacteria can be eliminated through green tea extract.

Keep Free Radicals Under Check

Green tea is a great source of natural antioxidants and packs the tea with medicinal properties. These antioxidants are very powerful tools in combating the free radicals which is the cause of the oxidation process leading to premature aging. You should opt for the supplement that should consist of green leaf tea component along with other natural ingredients also, which are equally important for the complete health of your body. Facilitate green tea to experience a clearer and smooth acne free skin.

The Story of Ted – Using Interferential Therapy for Peripheral Neuropathy

Ted is a patient who has suffered from peripheral neuropathy in his right calf and foot since 1987. Ted today is 77 years old and in good health but for the lack of sensation, and some pain, from the peripheral neuropathy. Let me tell you a little about Ted and his methods.

Ted was a pharmaceutical sales rep. over 35 years ago and always had a keen interest in the way our body works chemically. His pharma training helped him understand the intricacies of chemical actions in healing and disease. But Ted is a true “doubting Thomas”. Over the years Ted has always shown an interest in helping himself by understanding what is going on with his body, and not accepting anyone’s advice without seriously questioning the logic, positive and negative outcomes, if he chooses to abide by the recommended treatment of his physicians. The plural is used as Ted does not go see one doctor, but several, when he has an issue. He listens to general practitioners, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, Chiropractors, physical therapists, etc. and then compiles his own understanding of the health issues and forms his own opinion for his personal treatments.

Ted was originally diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in 1987 by a neurologist after an extensive nerve conduction study. In 1986 Ted had visited Duke Medical Center as he had noticed a small tremor that was not visible to others, but he knew of it. Ted was a certified marksman in the U.S. Army and National Guard so he continued his marksmanship contests. It was the need to stay totally still and slowly squeeze the trigger that alerted Ted something was not right.

Ted was also an avid bowler, competing in the Nationals, and in 2004 he quit because he was losing his ability to move his feet and control his balance. He competed at the national level so the progression of the peripheral neuropathy was something that limited his competitive abilities and he lost that competitive edge to win at that level of competition.

He has used multiple drugs and combinations over the years to combat the peripheral neuropathy.

Ted came to us because he was losing sensation in his right calf and foot. This was causing an issue because Ted is a sole surviving spouse. He lost his wife to cancer about 20 years ago and is self dependent. Ted is very independent and drives his car whenever he has to and it was becoming dangerous for Ted and other drivers because, due to the lost sensations in his foot, he was no longer able to discern by feel if his foot was on the brake or gas pedal. Ted overcame this by simply looking down at his foot to see which pedal it was on. Ted was very concerned, that after 25 years, the neuropathy was going to limit his ability to drive and take care of himself.

Ted came to us after his chiropractor suggested he could “help his peripheral neuropathy” by using an electrotherapy machine, treating Ted 3x per week, for approximately 6 months in his office. Ted lived more than 45 miles from his chiropractor and the travel would be prohibitive, as well as costly. He had figured it would cost him approximately $8,000+ just for the treatments, plus the time and cost of travel. He was seeking another option and came to us for help.

When we talked with Ted we asked him what was it about this machine the Doctor used that would supposedly “help his peripheral neuropathy”. Ted found the web site for the company and also sent us the literature the company sent to the doctors explaining the equipment. For me I was lucky as I was very familiar with the company, the owner, and the history of how the machine evolved. There was no “mystery waveform” nor any information known only by the manufacturer. The unit itself was basically very simple as far as electronic circuitry goes and there was nothing new in the equipment that had not been around for decades.

We offered Ted a free trial use of Infrex interferential therapy machine and instructed him on the proper protocols and electrode placements to see if the therapy would help him. It really appealed to Ted that he could self treat at his leisure and not have to commute back and forth to his doctor’s office for therapy. We knew Ted would be one of the most compliant patients we had ever had due to his inquisitive nature trying to understand the processes of electrotherapy and effects.

Ted would go home at night, recline in his Lazy Boy and apply one electrode to the bottom of his right foot, midback waistline point, and the other at the popliteal space ( behind knee), or upper calf, lower back thigh. Ted would use the interferential mode only for 45 minutes nightly, then change the upper electrode and go for 30 minutes for pain control sensory relief before going to sleep. He changed the upper electrode location each night depending upon the sensory input he perceived. He called us once in the first 30 days to make sure he was using the unit correctly. We did not hear from Ted for the next 30 days.

One early morning the first call I received started this way. “Bob I want to start your day and week off on a good note” was the greeting. It was Ted. He explained how he had reached the point that in his opinion he had restored 30% of feeling and function to his foot and calf. He told me for the first time in over 10 years he could now actually feel his toes and had sensation in them. The color of his foot had been restored to a brighter skin tone hue, the cold, bluish callousness it once was, was going away, and he had greater range of motion than he had prior to treatment, absent pain.

Ted continues to use his machine daily and continues to see improvement week by week. What is interesting to us is, there is hope for so many people who have resigned themselves to the consequences of pathological negative outcomes. Now with the ability to self treat, with a clinical interferential machine, the prospects of staying the disease, reversing symptoms, is beginning to offer new hope for patients never before imagined. Functional restoration is occurring now and the future looks bright.

Most Common Injuries in a Half Marathon And How to Deal With Them

Most injuries in a half marathon are related to the use of unreliable training program. When one implements such a program he or she is subjecting himself or herself not only to poor performance but to various injuries. There are also cases where the training program is reliable but one does not follow it correctly theryby leading to injuries as well. So one must design and follow a reliable half marathon training program and must be aware of still possible injuries which may be encountered before, during and after the half marathon event. Below are some of the common flaws and how one can prevent and treat them.

Injuries can result because of poor running equipment such as training shoes. Half marathon is such a demanding exercise that it places one's body especially the legs through extreme pressure. Good shoes must have the support needed for the hundreds of miles one will be running. Foot blisters is one of the most common injury in a half marathon. Blisters can compromise one's race when they occur and would upset the usual gait for a longer period of time. To prevent this from occurring, during training you should experiment with combination of shoes, socks, drying agents, covering pads and lubricants to know which suits you. But in case you developed a blister the best thing to do is to stop and sterilize the area, drain it and then cover with a bandage.

The next common injury is a black toenail which is blood pooling under the nail. In half marathons this is usually caused by repeated trauma of one's foot sliding forward in the shoe with each step. The type and the gradient of the running surface likewise can cause injuries. Chafing is also a common injury and this happens when skin rubs against skin. Underarms, nipples, under-breast, groin and thighs are often the areas which chafe. To avoid this from happening, one should always keep these areas dry by putting or rubbing cornstarch or lubricating them with petroleum jelly.

One should also be careful of food intake 48 hours before the half marathon. Stomach and bowel upsets are likewise common during a half marathon. One must not eat spicy food or drink alcohol or any unfamiliar. Caffeine take must be limited before the half marathon and one must not overeat because this may cause a problem to one's digestive system. One must use only energy snacks and drink which he or she knows will not have any ill effects. It is essential to know when one's body needs water to keep from being dehydrated. The signs of dehydration are dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, stomach ache, back pain, headache, irritability and reduced urination. If one experiences any sign of dehydration, he or she should slow down or stop and drink water or a sport drink.

Hypernatremia happens when one drinks too much fluid and the body does not have time to eliminate it. This dilutes the salt concentration in one's cells which is very dangerous. Nausea, headache, cramps, confusion, slurred speech, bloating and swollen hands are sign of hypernatremia. This is experience by runners who are drinking even if they are not thirsty. One must not drink when he or she is not thirsty. It is also common in competitive half marathon runners to hit the wall meaning completely running out of energy. To prevent this, you should drink full-strength sugared sport drink through the event. A runner can supplement it with energy gel or snacks. Sunburn and windburn is another half marathon injury. To avoid this one should wear a hat with a bill to protect the face and top of head. Lips can be protected by using a lip balm. Sunscreen should be applied to every bit of skin.

When the experiencing dehydration and salt depletion, one should stop and gently stretch and massage the cramped muscles. A runner can also experience classic leg cramps and he or she can have deep muscle massages, sprays such as deep heat / deep freeze and use joint support. The last common injury is a sprain ankle, folded muscles or a stress fracture. When these happen one should discontinue with the race / event and seek medical attention.

During a laparoscopic procedure, physicians use tiny incisions and small, precision-crafted surgical instruments. Since it is minimally invasive and relatively gentle on the body, patients often return to their regular routine within 1-2 weeks. Other benefits include:

Some of the minimally invasive surgery are mentioned below:

” Gastric Bypass – Generally, people are most familiar with this type of bariatric surgery, simply because it has been around for a long time. With gastric bypass surgery, a small portion of the stomach is stapled off and rendered unusable. The intestine is then reattached to the smaller portion of the stomach. This reduces the stomach capacity, which in turn leads to weight loss. Learn more about gastric bypass.

” Adjustable Gastric Band – With this type of bariatric surgery, a band is laparoscopically inserted around the upper part of the stomach .This achieves the same “segmenting” effect as gastric bypass, but in a much less invasive way. The LAP-BAND System is a popular form of adjustable gastric banding. Learn more about gastric banding in general and the LAP_BAND in particular.

” Vertical Banded Gastroplasty – The VBG procedure combines two of the things we have mentioned previously – stomach bands and staples. Like the other types of bariatric surgery discussed in this article, the VBG procedure obtains results by creating a “stomach within a stomach.” Learn more about vertical banded gastroplasty..

” Gastric Sleeve Surgery – This procedure is a relatively new type of bariatric surgery. It also referred to as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, or LSG. This procedure removes a significant portion of the stomach, leaving a sleeve-shaped section of the stomach (hence the name gastric sleeve. Learn more about gastric sleeve surgery.
