Facial Exercises for Bells Palsy

Bells Palsy, a form of facial paralysis is the inability to voluntarily control facial muscles. However, there are methods for strengthening in order to gain greater control of the facial muscles. According to the Facial Paralysis Institute on Facial Exercises for Bell’s Palsy, facial exercises can help improve the contraction of muscles for individuals that suffer from mild to severe cases. The institute states that main goal is to recreate the “brain-to-nerve-to-muscle” pathway by regaining the ability to conduct facial movements by doing so voluntarily, while focusing on the action mentally. Facial movements must be unlearned then must be relearned slowly and correctly in order to help coordinate facial muscles. The belief is that since facial movements become autonomic over time, the process of performing facial exercises can help strengthen and retrain the facial muscles.

According to the Bells Palsy Association, a method to help close the eyelid is as follows. First, look down, toward the floor. Secondly, rest the posterior or back of the index finger on a eyelid to keep it closed. Thirdly, with the other hand gently massage and stretch the eyebrow above the eye that is closed. Repeat the process with the other eye as well. Finally, slowly and gently squint both eyes as if looking into the sun until both eyes shut. The purpose of this exercise is not only to help the eyelids close but to prevent the eyelid from becoming stiff.

Another facial exercise mentioned by the Bells Palsy Association targets the majority of muscles found in the face. For this exercise, start by looking in front of a mirror. Secondly, gently raise both eyebrows by using fingers and hold the position. Thirdly, make a frowning face and wrinkle the nose while the fingers are holding the eyebrows up. Slowly return the frowning face and wrinkled nose to normal. Then, take both index fingers and place them on the corner of the lips. Gently slide the index fingers backwards, towards the ears until a smile is formed. Remove the index fingers and hold the smile in place. If the smile is held in place for longer than a few seconds, relax the muscles. To complete this exercise move both corners of the mouth to right, then left. This facial exercise should stretch and strengthen facial muscles if performed regularly.

In conclusion, there are many sources besides a doctor that can explain facial exercises. There are several articles and even videos that show Bell Palsy patients how to performing facial exercises. Research shows that by practicing, the exercises mentioned above for patients with a mild to severe cases of Bell’s Palsy, have a greater chance at retraining their facial muscles to work correctly. The hope is to find a cure for Bell’s Palsy, however, if an individual has Bell’s Palsy it does not hurt to participate in the facial exercises mentioned above. The facial exercises do not cause any discomfort and it is a way to manage the conditions that patients with Bell’s Palsy face.

Management of Methyl Alcohol Poisoning

Methanol or Methyl Alcohol is a denaturant. It is a component of varnishes, paint removers, windshield wipers, anti-freeze solutions, copy-machine fluid and as a solvent.

Acute Poisoning

Acute Methanol Poisoning is usually a consequence of ingestion of cheap, adulterated, illicit liquor. Methanol is very toxic and requires as little as 30 ml of 40% solution to be fatal. Poisoning is mostly stratified among the people of lower socioeconomic status. On ingestion, Methanol is metabolized in the liver to formaldehyde and formic acid by alcohol dehydrogenase. Although both are toxic, formic acid is what causes the more serious delayed effects. It is also readily distributed in the liver, gastrointestinal tract, eyes and kidneys.

Clinical Features

Methanol is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, peak levels reaching within 1-2 hours. Onset of clinical manifestations is variable.

Early manifestations such as nausea, vomiting, headache, vertigo and gastritis are primarily caused by Methanol itself. High serum levels of Methanol (> 40 mg / dl) is associated with obtundation, convulsions and coma.

Late manifestations such as visual disturbances, severe metabolic acidosis, seizures, coma and death are common after 30 hours after ingestion. The latent period is longer when Ethanol is ingested concurrently. Ocular toxicity is associated with diminished vision, flashing spots, dilated pupils, optic disc hyperemia, retinal edema and extremely blindness.

Severe poisoning leads to myocardial depression, bradycardia and shock.

Laboratory Investigations

Apart from arterial blood gases which is essential, serum osmolality and anion gap assist in diagnosis. Renal and Liver function tests should be done and blood Methanol levels measured, if possible. CT scan of the brain may show bilateral putamen necrosis. A retrospective diagnosis of Methanol poisoning is sometimes based on this finding. Diagnosis is essentially clinical, but calculation of the osmolal and anion gap can help assess severity where serum methanol levels can not be estimated.

1. Unabsorbed Methanol should be removed by gastric lavage.

2. Supportive Measures:

  • Correction of Acidosis
  • Control of seizures
  • Maintenance of nutrition
  • Alkalization of urine enhances excretion of formic acid

3. Specific Measures:

  • Administration of Ethanol to saturate alcohol dehydrogenase in the liver, preventing the formation of toxic metabolite, formaldehyde. A 5% solution of Ethanol is prepared and 15 ml / kg is given as loading dose and then 2-3 ml / kg / hour as maintenance dose orally. It can also be given intravenously.
  • Hemodialysis enhancements elimination of Methanol and Formic acid and is indicated when Methanol levels exceeded 50 mg / dl. In the absence of serum Methanol level measurements, the osmolar gap is useful to assess the indication for and duration of hemodialysis in Methanol-poisoned patients.
  • Folic acid has been used to enhance conversion of formate to carbon dioxide and water. The dose is 50 mg IV 4 hourly for 24 hours.
  • 4-methylpyrazole, an inhibitor of alcohol dehydrogenase, has been successfully used as an alternative to Ethanol and Dialysis.

Epilepsy Lifestyle Issues

In simple terms, epilepsy refers to a seizure disorder. This chronic brain disorder temporarily stops normal electrical activity of the brain. Uncontrolled movements of the body, disorientation, fear, anxiety and unconsciousness may accompany these seizures. In most cases, epilepsy is controlled by medication. In extreme situations, patients are operated on. In over 70 percent of all cases, the cause of epilepsy is unidentified. Untimely and sudden seizures are disturbing and dangerous. For this reason, epilepsy lifestyle issues are a major concern for patients and doctors.

Diagnosis of epilepsy makes a patient wary. These seizes, more often than not, target a patient's lifestyle issues. It is important to know that the disease is not the same for everyone. The source, type and frequency of seizures vary among patients. The effect of seizures depends upon individual lifestyle. For a few people, epilepsy may have little effect on everyday life, whereas for others seizures may be risky. This has to be closely observed and lifestyle issues have to be addressed accordingly.

Since epilepsy occurs without warning, regular medication is a necessity. This is essential to help the affected person cope with daily challenges. An employed individual needs medication to avoid epileptic attacks at work. This could be life threatening and can hamper the persons productivity. If a seizure occurs while driving, it is almost always hazardous.

Prescription drugs allow epileptic persons to participate in sports and leisure activities. It is important to carry medicines, if epileptic people decide to travel abroad or out of the state. Since the family physician is not available in these places, medicines go a long way in preventing any untoward event. In a few sensitive epileptic cases, seizures may even be triggered by specific occurrences. Once identified, these situations should be avoided.

Stress and alcohol consumption should be controlled. In case of pregnancy, anti epileptic drugs may increase the risk of abnormalities in a developing baby. A patient? S doctor, neurologists, pediatricians, as well as an epileptologist, can be communicated to successfully deal with epilepsy lifestyle issues.

Natural Home Remedies for Stress, Mental Disorders

What are these?

Nervous diseases are more difficulty to diagnose than diseases of the various organs of the body because the nervous system is hidden from the eye of the physician and it can be known only from the disturbances of the organs governed by the affected nerves whether and of what type the nervous diseases is. Under this head come apoplexy, forgetfulness, hysteria, mental defectiveness, mental illness, neurasthenia and others. The most common nervous weakness, nervous break down or nervous exhaustion.

Many factors contribute to the production of nervous diseases. Some people are born with a nervous disposition and it is that category which generally suffers from headaches, neuralgia, hysterical manifestations and bizarre forms of mental activity. The nervous system is exposed to the fast pace of modern life, which tends to bring on many diseases like anxiety states, digestives disturbances and exhaustion. Shocks to both mind and body, such as the loss of a dear one, money reverses, an unfortunate love affair and an accident may be the starting point of many chronic nervous complaints. Certain organic poisons like the one produced in body by diseases like syphilis give rise to serious nervous disorders. Chronic alcoholism may bring on severe mental derangement. The organic disorders manifest themselves in the shape by hysteria, anxiety states and nervous breakdowns.

Weakness of the nervous system can give rise to diseases like dyspepsia or palpitation, which cannot be helped by remedies directed towards those organs. It is but natural since it is the brain and the nervous system enclosed in it, which controls the bodily functions. A sudden loosening of bowels or the bladder in case of fright is an example. Another example is of certain persons with a strong will power who are able to fight serious crisis brought on by diseases much better than ordinary individuals.

A person suffering from nervous weakness or debility generally experiences a sense of nameless fear, agitation, perplexity, confusion, worry, disappointment, loneliness, irritability and insomnia. The physical symptoms are constipation, dyspepsia, headaches, vague aches and pains all over the body and feverishness. The patient is also inclined to be a hypochondriac. The moment he reads about or hears the symptoms of a disease he imagines that he suffers from it. The wise physician will keep him away from any medical literature.

The main cause of a nervous breakdown is the rat race in which modern man engages. The lust for money and success-which again is measured in the good things of life, -motivates a man to overwork, both mentally and physically. Constant worry about things being done and to be done lead to tension and a man falls prey to his imagination. Overstraining leads to mistakes which erodes his self-confidence and after that the only way is the way downhill.

Since a healthy mind can reside only in a healthy body, see that the body regains its health. The paint must live a normal, natural life. He should try to get sleep. During the day also he should be advised to relax in a bed for some hours. The loosening of tensions by relaxation will help his organs to do their work properly and he would be able to get rid of the poisons.

The next imperative for such a patient is exercise. He should take walks and if possible take a jogging. His foods should include bread made from wheat from which bran has not been sieved out, fruits and boiled vegetables. Since nervous debility shows a marked lack of vitamin B, the deficiency should be made up by inclusion in his diet of foods, which contain it in larger measure. Unpolished rice, milk, cucumber, mangoes, pears, pineapples, guava, tomatoes, raisins and leafy vegetables should be his mainstay. He should be asked to eat his food in a relaxed manner, chewing it properly before ingestion.

Massages can help in reactivating the nervous system. Hydropathic treatment is also recommended and that merely consists in bathing his spine with a garden or bathroom shower for a couple of minutes. The water should be cold. During summer cold showering of the spine could be done three times or more and in winter twice would do.

The patient must be told to exercise his willpower to get rid of the disease. He must be told that he is getting better. Psychological impressions must be created on his mind, which will help to understand that his disease is not incurable. Suggestion is the best thing in such circumstances. It has to be remembered that certain nervous diseases like hysteria are the result of autosuggestion and nothing else.

Persons suffering from nervous debility are always on the look out for crutches on which they can lean or shoulders on which they can weep. The wise physician tries to reawaken their self-confidence and the desire to stand on their own feet.

Some exercises are helpful in dealing with nervous debility.

Sit on your feet with your stomach touching your knees. Try to keep your spine straight and extend both your arms. Now thrust your right foot forward and stand up with a jerk. Resume your earlier position and repeat the exercise with your left foot.

Stand with your right leg about a foot from your left. Join your hands and extend the arms downward, upward and then backward. More the arms with the hands joined in a circular motion and inhale and exhale deeply during the movement.

Lie on your back on the floor with your elbows touching your sides. Then try to raise the body with your elbows and heels and then resume the former position.

Stand like a boxer and make positions like you are hitting somebody with your fists. Or, to put it differently, indulge in shadow boxing for some time, moving your feet as a boxer does.

Stand in the normal position and then sit down with a jerk on your toes, with your palms touching the ground. Suddenly jerk your legs back just as you were about to do push-up. The exercise is akin to doing sit-ups and push-ups simultaneously.

If this regimen is followed for some weeks, you can get rid of any nervous disorder. It is also beneficial for sciatica, hydrosel and dropsy.

Personal and Close to Home ~~~
This past weekend Saturday and Sunday consecutively two of my dear friend's husbands had 'heart attacks'. It was very scary there for a while for all of us. These men are 55 and 58 (not very old in the scheme of things) One was dealing with extremely high blood pressure; the other, this was his 3rd heart attack and he had also undergone open heart surgery about 3 years ago. Both were diagnosed with a blocked coronary artery (arteries that service the heart).

What Happens

1. Over time, high blood pressure can damage your artery walls and cause them to harden and thicken.

2. Plague, which consists of cholesterol, fat, calcium and other substances, can build up in the damaged lining of an artery. Over time, it narrows and blocks the artery. As this plaque continues to build, the artery becomes narrower, harder and less flexible. This reduces blood flow to the artery.

3. Eventually, the plaque cracks. If this happens, platelets, which are particles in the blood, clump together on or near the crack and can form a clot, then cutting off the blood flow to the heart or brain – so leading to a heart attack or stroke.

Symptoms of a heart attack or stroke are not the same for everyone. Also signs of a second heart attack or stroke may be different from those a person experienced the first time.

* pain or discomfort in one or both arms, your back, neck, jaw or stomach

* pain or discomfort in the center of your chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back

* pressure, squeezing or fullness in the chest

* shortness of breath

* nausea, vomiting, cold sweat or dizziness

* sudden numbness or weakness in your face, arm or leg on one side of your body

* trouble walking or dizziness

* sudden confusion or trouble speaking

* loss of vision in one or both eyes

* sudden, severe headache

NOTE: Women's Symptoms May be Different
In addition to the symptoms listed above, Women may also experience such things as:
– unusual fatigue
– sleep disturbance and anxiety 'weeks' before a heart attack

Minutes Matter – Every Second Counts …
If you or a loved one or someone you know is experiencing the symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, have someone drive you or them to the nearest emergency room or in most cases CALL 911. Many people waste valuable time thinking the symptoms are not serious, but it's important to take action as soon as your symptoms appear. About 50 percent of people who die from a heart attack die within one hour of the onset of symptoms. And, it's no different for stroke patients – every minute that passes increases your risk of serous brain damage or disability.

10 Lifestyle Changes that You Can Make to Reduce Your Risk of a Heart Attack or Stroke.

Has Your Pet Developed Salmonella From Pet Treats?

There is no doubt about it, pet owners consider their furry friends members of the family and treat them with great care and concern. It has been said that the pet care industry is a billion dollar industry in the United States, with trips and accessories ranking at the top of list for dollars sent.

Since many pet owners take great pains to locate products that are both safe and healthy for their pets in an effort to keep them around for as long as possible, a great deal of trust is placed in the hands of the manufacturers of these products. When something goes wrong and this trust is breached, people feel extremely betrayed and angered; especially when their faithful companions become ill.

What is even worse is when common treasures that are readily fed to pets are contaminated with substances that make their human care takers sick. This issue is of growing concern as of late as a number of pet owners became sick with salmonella infections after handling seafood and beef flavored tricks that were contaminated with bacteria.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted a study on this issue and released the results on June 29, 2006. The CDC's study looked into nine different cases of pet owners becoming ill with a specific type of infection known as Salmonella Thompson. These infections took place in 2004 and 2005 and resolved after the pet owners handled tractors made by two different pet food manufacturers. One of the treat manufacturers was located in British Columbia, Canada, and the other was located in Washington State.

The co-author of the study conducted by the CDC, an epidemiologist at the CDC's Division of Food borne, Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases, part of the National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne, and Enteric Diseases, stated that these cases were the first reported in the United States, but the third outbreak that has been reported in North America. He also went on to say that it is not uncommon for pet trees that are derived from animals are contaminated with bacteria such as salmonella. The report also stated that there are most likely many more cases, as people often do not consider coming into contact with pet treats as a potential danger.

The nine people who were studied in the report conducted by the CDC all suffered with diabetes, and one was so ill that hospitalization was required. Another person in the study experienced vomiting in addition to the dirrhea. In all nine cases, the illnesses were officially linked back to the pet trees that were tested and confirmed contaminated with salmonella. The entire report is documented in the CDC journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has called upon the owners of pet stores, veterinarians, pet treat manufacturers, and health care providers to supply information to pet owners regarding the potential health risks associated with pet treats that are animal derived , along with tips for preventing salmonellosis. The CDC also has asked pet treat manufacturers to use irradiation or certain types of heat treatments during the manufacturing process in order to kill various types of bacteria including salmonella.

This serious issue is due to a failure on the part of manufacturers to comply with recommended guidelines for the preparation of food and pet trees, as set forth by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This is once again an issue of manufacturers placing money before people, and cutting corners to save a few dollars in order to improve their bottom line.

Just as is the case with products meant for human consumption, pet food manufacturers owe the public at large a particular duty of care to provide safe products that will not cause harm or illness. When this duty of care is breached, a type of negligence has occurred and that is grounds for legal action.

If you or someone you know has been harmed because of a salmonella infection from pet treats, you should not delay in seeking legal assistance from a personal injury attorney who specializes in product liability. These professionals are quite skilled in this area of the law, and will handle every aspect of your case from start to finish.

Pet food manufacturers have teams of legal professionals that work hard to protect their interests at all times, and you should have someone working just as hard for you. You should risk becoming a victim twice, and you should never have to suffer needlessly because of someone else's poor choices.

Your personal injury attorney will gather all important information for your case; he or she will collect medical records, evidence, interview witnesses, and even arrange for experts if necessary. Since these cases can be somewhat complex and hinge on many small details, it is not recommended that you attempt to file on your own without professional assistance. Missing just one piece of criteria or filing even a day late can completely ruin your chances of a favorable exit.

Since most personal injury attorneys work on a contingency basis, you do not have to worry about how to fund your claim in advance. In most cases, you do not have to pay anything until the time your case settles. This can be a great comfort during a time that is already too stressful enough.

Compensation in cases such as this can be thought for past, present, and future medical expenses, a loss of income, pain and suffering, and emotional harm. In some cases, a judge may also order punitive damage as a way to punish those who are responsible for the harm in order to prevent similar actions from happening again.

While a personal injury attorney can not undo the harm you have suffered, he or she can help you to protect your rights and obtain the justice you deserve. You should not hesitate to consult with a legal professional as soon as possible following your illness, as you do not want to risk becoming a victim twice.

Alopecia Can Cause Depression and Anxiety For Some Patients

Everyone experiences hair loss daily. While combing or brushing the hair, there are always a number of hairs that get plucked from their roots. Fortunately it's not enough to cause distress because the loss is minimal. However, it is different for patients who are suffering from Alopecia. Alopecia causes some to have bald spots on their scalp and others ever lose all hairs on their body which places them in a very stressful situation.

Some people who suffer from Alopecia may develop anxiety and or depression. Many of those who experience Alopecia for the first time are the ones most affected by all its implications. Some feel shy about having Alopecia making it difficult for them to make friends. Some reason to mingle with people, becoming angry and agitated when in the crowd, for fear of their hair situation being aware and being talked about. Others simply refuse to see people at all. While this is a normal reaction at first, theability of some people with Alopecia to come out of their shell, the worse it becomes for them. Their social, emotional and mental status deteriorates as well as their physical appearance. The good news is that there is hope for them.

Finding the "cure" for Alopecia has caused many of us to read and try every manual, website, hair product out there not to mention the many doctor consultations. Some of us have tried hair enhancement products and it has worked for us. Some prefer to wear wigs. A well made, well fitted wig can help us get our confidence back and let us live our regular life. Hair transplants have also been successful for those who can afford it.

The problem with Alopecia is that for many who have it, have it for life. Some people experienced a bald spot and then hair would simply grow back even without treatment and never have it happen again. But for some, their hair grows back again, sometimes for years posing no problems. Then something changes and we find ourselves becoming bald again sometimes to the extent of losing all of the hair or sometimes leaving just a few strands in their scalp.

Those of us with Alopecia have different ways in dealing with it. There are people who refuse to call it a disease because for them they do not feel any pain from it. There are those who accepted the fact that they would go hairless or bald for life and then simply lived with it. They go about their daily activities studying, working, going to the halls, theaters, parties or just anything people do, never minding the looks and whispers and even the outright rudeness of some people who discriminate against them. Some even feel lucky and happy and are successful in their pursuit of their relevant careers.

Anxiety and depression cause other people with Alopecia to remain in their shells and some even to go out. Their Alopecia causes them to live a secluded life. But they have to know that many others like us are able to live up to the challenges of the condition. Forums and support groups are available for us all the time. They just have to know that they are not alone in this struggle and that there is help.

How To Determine If Your Child Has An Ear Infection

Children are prone to ear infections, because their Eustachian tubes are still growing. It has been reported that 5 out of 6 children will be diagnosed with otitis media, by the time they turn three years old.

Onset on Otitis Media

The sunset of otitis media will typically follow a bout of rhinitis (common cold), sinusitis, and other major respiratory illnesses. Fluid will become trapped in the middle ear, behind the eardrum and over time the fluid will build up causing inflammation.

An earache will go away on its own, without any type of treatment, but you can use a warm compress or water bottle to soothe the pain and reduce the inflammation. Of course, otitis media will require a pediatric visit, in order to get a genuine diagnosis.

If your child becomes restless and tugging at his ears, he may very well be suffering from otitis media. While a small infant can not verbally tell you what ails him, you as a parent will need to learn the warning signs of an ear infection.

Signs of Otitis Media

Most children exhibit the same symptoms, when it involves many of the childhood illness, especially otitis media. Symptoms may include:

· Pulling the ears

· Irritability with / without crying

· Insomnia

· Fluid or pus drainage noted from the affected ear

· Poor balance (this can be very difficult to notice in toddlers, because they are just beginning to learn how to walk)

· Difficulty hearing

A troublesome Fever is as follows: younger than 3 months (100.4 F), 3-6 months (102 F), 6-24 months (higher than 102 F) will require emergency treatment to determine the source of infection.

Lower Immunity

Young infants and children will not have yet developed strong immunity, which means their immune system may not be able to combat the antigen (bacteria). The adenoids (nasopharyngeal tonsil), which are located in the nasal cavity are part of the immune system.

The adenoids will work diligently to trap bacteria and prevent it from entering the body. The adenoid tonsils can become enlarged due to upper respiratory tract infections, which means they will not be able to function properly.

Otitis Media Diagnosis

When you take your infant to the emergency room or pediatrician, they will immediately begin to do a head to toe examination. This exam will involve using an otoscope to look inside the ears, oral and nasal cavities. The nurse will also check your child's temperature and blood pressure.

Otitis Media Treatment

Once the pediatrician has determined that your child has acute otitis media, an antibiotic will be prescribed. Be sure to follow the directions on the bottle to a tee, because you definitely want to completely eradicate the bacteria. Fluid may potentially remain in the ear canal for several weeks, but this is nothing to be concerned about, because it will disappear gradually.

Avoid smoking around your child, because tobacco smoke can potentially increase your child's risks of upper respiratory and ear infections. The 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is also available for all children under the age of 2.

Teach your child hand washing techniques, because the skin is your biggest defense against infections.

Causes and Treatment For Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL) can be defined as a loss of hearing that occurs immediately or in less than three days, if it occurs to you it is a medical emergency and must be considered as such; if you can not visit your own doctor it is imperative that you go to a local hospital as an emergency patient. Sensorineural hearing loss may be either sensory, which means it directly affect the cochlea or it may be neural in which case it connects the nerves between the cochlea and the brain.

A decibel (dB) is the unit used to measure sound, and a frequency is the word that is used for measuring sound waves. Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss will be diagnosed if you have lost at least 30 dB's over three connected frequencies. In real terms the decibel level of 30 is about half as loud as the sound of normal conversation. In 90% of cases SSHL only occurs in one ear and the most common time that it is noticed, is first thing in the morning when you wake up. Other people notice it when they tried to make a phone call in their deaf ear stop. In some cases just before Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss occurs there can be a loud "pop" immediately before the hearing loss. Many sufferers of SSHL also experience tinnitus which is a loud ringing in their ear, others experience dizziness and nausea; the really unfortunate get both symptoms.

As debilitating as these symptoms are, they are rarely permanent; only about 15% of sufferers find that they hearing loss gets worse. Some people slowly improve over a fortnight or so that a spontaneous recovery without medical intervention usually within the first few days. Although it can affect anyone at any time most sufferers forward in the age range of between 30 and 60. Over 4,000 new cases of Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss are diagnosed annually within the United States alone.

Over A 100 possible causes of sudden deafness have been identified yet anyway this few patients ever get to the bottom of the cause of their hearing loss. In general a doctor will go specifically on your medical history and if you have had a major head trauma just before suffering from Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss it will probably be put down to that. Unfortunately many people can not define a clear cause for their sudden loss of hearing. For optimal hearing it is necessary to have a good blood and airflow within the ear some medical researchers findings indicate that in certain cases it is caused by insufficient oxygen to the inner ear.

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss may be a byproduct of certain events, certain toxins such as those as found in snake bites can cause it as can immunological diseases such as Cogan's syndrome which is unfortunately rare disease causing inflammation of the eye if left untreated it can cause both blindness and deafness. Ototoxic drugs are drugs that can harm the inner ear and these may cause in hearing loss. Multiple sclerosis patients may also suffer sudden hearing loss, as do suffer of Ménière's disease.

Usually SSHL, is treated with steroids especially in cases where there is no known cause. Steroids allow the body to fight illnesses and it reduces inflammation. In cases where ototoxic drugs that have caused the problem a doctor will probably recommend antibiotics as well as stop taking the original drugs. Some patients improve after they have reduced their salt intake.
