Beware of Highly Toxic Dental Fillings – Mercury Poisoning Is Serious

Amalgam dental fillings are used in millions of Americans each year to fill cavities despite the fact that they contain mercury, a highly toxic substance known to cause neurological damage and a host of other health problems, especially in vulnerable patients. Dental amalgam is an alloy of 50% elemental mercury and 50% other metals, mostly silver with some tin and copper. The elemental mercury in amalgam dental fillings is hazardous due to its potential to release small amounts of mercury vapor over time which the patient absorbs through inhalation or ingestion, causing serious long term health consequences.

Signs of ingestion-related mercury poisoning included

Some dentists tested that they are no longer use mercury because it is too risky. Dozens of patients described how their health deteriorated after getting amalgam fillings. The panel concluded that there is not enough data to rule out the possibility that a small but significant number of people might be at risk from exposure to mercury in the fillings.

Other sources of mercury poisoning include the ingestion of fish, particularly whale and dolphin meat, which contain methylmercury. Contamination of this sort is caused by environmental pollution which eventually settles into land and water. Controllable mercury released into the environment is caused by coal ash and believe it or not – mercury from dental amalgam! The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consumer update on dental amalgam advises, as a precaution, that pregnant women and persons who may have a health condition that makes them more sensitive to mercury exposure should discuss dental treatment options with their health care practitioner. Chocolate Toxicity in Dogs

Dogs love chocolate. However, because they do not have the proper enzymes to break down the components, it is a poison when ingested.

Chocolate is made from the beans of the cacao tree. Within the beans is Theobromine which is toxic to dogs. Theobromine stimulates the Central Nervous System as well as the cardiovascular system. It also increases blood pressure and causes nausea and vomiting.

Certain types of chocolate are more toxic than others. The most dangerous is unsweetened chocolate commonly used by bakers which contains eight to ten times the amount of Theobromine as milk chocolate. White chocolate contains the least Theobromine, and therefore, poisoning from white chocolate is highly unlikely.

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual 8th edition, unsweetened chocolate consists 290-450 mg of Theobromine per ounce where milk chocolate only consists of 44-60 mg. A toxic dose of Theobromine is approximately 100-200 mg/kg. However, the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) reports having incidents of toxicity where much less amounts were consumed, 20 mg/kg. According to these figures, if a 50 pound dog consumed 5 ounces, there is risk for poisoning.

Signs of toxicity are generally seen within twelve hours. They include nervousness, excitement, trembling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, urination, muscle spasms, seizures, coma, and death. While comas and death are rare, they do occur normally due to an abnormal heart rhythm.

If a dog is suspected of ingesting chocolate, a veterinarian should be consulted for advice. Since the toxicity of chocolate is dependent upon the dose, factors such as the type of chocolate, amount eaten, and size of the pet need to be taken into consideration.

While there is no specific treatment, actions can be taken to reduce the negative symptoms. An IV can be started to provide fluids and help prevent dehydration while simultaneously assisting to rid the Theobromine from the body. Emetics which induce vomiting are effective when consumption has occurred within the past four hours. Activated charcoal can be effective for consumption which has occurred beyond the past four hours. Anti seizure can also be of assistance in treating seizures or muscle tremors, and cardiac medication can help regulate a more normal rhythm.

Chocolate is not poisonous to humans because they have the proper enzymes to break down the molecules in Theobromine and digest it properly. Since dogs do not have these facilities, caution must be taken to ensure a dog does no ingest chocolate.

Effects of Smoking in Pregnancy!

Approximately 30 per cent of women who smoke in Britain continue to smoke during pregnancy. Cigarettes affect the mothers’ circulation, which in turn will affect the baby. The baby in the womb is totally relying on mother to supply oxygen, nourish and filter out any dangerous chemicals.

o ” The placenta (afterbirth) is the lifeline between mother and baby. When a pregnant woman smokes, oxygen in her blood is replaced by carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas, which robs muscles, brain and body tissues of oxygen making the baby’s heart work harder. If the baby is deprived of oxygen it will suffer from its effects, which is known as hypoxia. The affect of hypoxia happens over a long period of time. The most immediate affect for the baby is his/her movements inside the womb slow down and heart rate speeds up as the baby tries to get more oxygen. There is a reduction in baby movements for up to thirty minutes after the mother has smoked a single cigarette.

Nicotine, carbon monoxide, and other chemicals in tobacco smoke are passed on to the baby. There are 4000 chemical in cigarettes of which there are more than 30 known carcinogens. A German study showed traces of NNK, (nicotine-derived nitrosaminoketone) which is one of the strongest cancer causing agents found in tobacco products. It was detected in 22 of 31 newborns of mothers who smoked during pregnancy.

Effects of Nicotine

Nicotine travels through the bloodstream to the brain, and then is delivered to the rest of the body.

80 % of nicotine is broken down to cotinine by enzymes in the liver. A build up of cotinine can act on the womb causing it to contract, or go into labour. Many chemicals, including nicotine, can readily move from the mother’s bloodstream into the foetal blood supply. (This is why physicians are so cautious about what over-the-counter or prescription drugs women take in pregnancy.) If you smoke while pregnant, your child will be exposed to almost the same level of nicotine as you. That means that once he or she is born and is no longer getting nicotine intravenously, the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal will likely set in.

Clinical studies have reported that nicotine concentrations in the placenta, amniotic fluid and foetal serum were consistently higher than maternal serum values when measured at various stages throughout pregnancy

Nicotine alters a smoker’s blood pressure, heart rate, and even their metabolism. Nicotine moves right into the lining of small blood vessels causing them to narrow thus reducing the blood flow to the womb and subsequently to the baby. Nicotine can inhibit the production of prostacyclin, a potent vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet aggregation, in arteries. Studies have shown that nicotine increases uterine vascular resistance and reduces uterine blood flow, possibly by an action on catecholamine release. Smoking acutely and chronically reduces placental blood flow, presumably through an effect of nicotine.

There is, evidence that nicotine impairs foetal growth and can lead to an increased risk of spontaneous abortion and premature delivery. A likely cause of foetal growth retardation is induction of foetal ischaemia (reduced blood supply) and hypoxia (lack of oxygen) as a result of the effect of nicotine on the placental circulation.

Nicotine from cigarettes or replacement therapy has potential adverse effects on human health.

Over 8 million women smoke in the UK. Research amongst female smokers shows that 74% would like to stop smoking but despite these attempts most women continue to be dependent on nicotine and experience difficulty in overcoming their addiction to the drug.

Pregnant women who smoke are often highly motivated to quit, especially during early pregnancy, but many continue to smoke. Smoking amongst expectant mothers in the UK is surprisingly high at 23% and only 3% of people stop smoking successfully when relying solely on willpower.

There are increased risks in pregnancy when the mother smokes. The risk of miscarriage is 27% higher in smokers. Perinatal mortality (defined as still-birth or death of an infant within the first week of life) is increased by about one-third in babies of smokers. The risk of a low birth weight baby (200gramas 7oz) is three times higher. Furthermore, the more cigarettes a woman smokes during pregnancy, the greater the probable reduction in birth weight.

Recent research suggests that cigarettes can reduce the flow of blood in the placenta, which limits the amount of nutrients that reach the foetus. There is a 35% increase in cot deaths associated with smoking in pregnancy. Maternal smoking is associated with a higher risk of children’ s cancers. Infants of parents who smoke are twice as likely to suffer from serious respiratory infection than the children of non-smokers. Smoking during pregnancy can also increase the risk of asthma in young children.

Maternal smoking in pregnancy has been associated with behaviour and attention deficit disorders. Mothers who smoked more than ½ a pack of cigarettes were significantly more likely to have an offspring with conduct disorder. Substance abuse is higher among children of mothers who smoked in pregnancy and also impaired child-rearing behaviour. Smoking in pregnancy may also have implications for the long-term physical growth and intellectual development of the child. It has been associated with a reduced height in children of smoking mothers as compared with non-smoking mothers, with lower attainments in reading and mathematics up to age 16 and even with the highest qualification achieved by the age of 23.

On average, smokers have more complications of pregnancy and labour, which can include bleeding during pregnancy, premature detachment of the placenta and premature rupture of the membranes. Some studies have also revealed a link between smoking and ectopic pregnancy and congenital defects in the offspring of smokers. Women are more likely to experience vomiting, urinary infections, thrush, to feel unwell and have more hospital admissions. There is also evidence that smoking interferes with women’s hormonal balance during pregnancy and that this may have long-term consequences on the reproductive organs of her children.

In December 1998, the UK government set a target to reduce the percentage of women who smoke during pregnancy from 23% to 15% by the year 2010; with a fall to 18% by the year 2005. This will mean approximately 55,000 fewer women in England who smoke during pregnancy. This target has not yet been achieved.

World War One: The Mystery of Anastasia

One of the greatest Mysteries of the First World War is that of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna, the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra.

Anastasia was one of four children of Russia’s Royal couple, who were murdered in 1918. Since the Royal Family’s execution in July 1918, there have been speculative rumours regarding the location and possible survival of Anastasia. The rumour was fuelled by the fact that the location of her grave has been disputed and was unknown during the decades of Communist rule in Russia. The mass grave of the Russian Royal family was located near Ekaterinburg. The grave held the remains of the Tsar, the Tsarina and three daughters. Despite the discovery of the grave, the bodies of Alexei and either his older sister Anastasia or Maria were not in the grave.

Following the execution, many women claiming to be Anastasia surfaced in Russia and across Europe. One woman in particular was Anna Anderson. Anderson is the most notorious of Anastasia imposters, who surfaced in the early twenties. Her argument was that she had feigned death, hid amongst the bodies of her ‘royal’ family and escaped with the help of a compassionate ‘Red’ Soldier. Anderson’s legal battle was the longest running in German history, as Anderson battle for recognition between 1938 and 1970. The final decision of the court was that she had not proven enough evidence to support her claim. Following her death in 1984, DNA tests were taken from tissue samples in a hospital and a blood sample taken from HRH Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. The results showed that Anderson’s DNA was not a match with Prince Phillips as His Royal Highness is the Grand Nephew of the Tsarina.

Anderson was merely one of a dozen women claiming to be the lost Princess. Two women claiming to be Maria and Anastasia were taken by priests to the Ural Mountains in 1919 where they lived as nuns until their deaths. The execution of the Royal family did not stop rumours and reports circulating regarding Anastasias survival. The rumours fuelled a ‘man hunt’ style search for the Romanov woman. One possible lead was that in 1918, at Perm, the imprisoned Princess Helena Petrovna stated that a guard had shown her a girl who claimed to be Anastasia. Petrovna stated that she did not recognise the girl and subsequently the young girl was taken away.

It is important to note that the rumours stating that the Royal Family were not dead, merely fuelled the rumours that the Romanov’s were alive. In particular, a number of days after the family were executed; the German government decreed that the safety of the Royal Family was paramount. This is due to the fact that all Royal houses of the early 20th century were related. Following signing the treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the new Communist Russia did not wish to alienate foreign powers, thus other states were told the Royal family had been moved. This may be the background to the Perm story.

Historians have argued and speculated that the opportunity for one of the guards to rescue a member of, or the Royal family, did exist. Following the shooting, the Guards responsible were ordered to turn over items looted from the bodies. It is argued that a significant time span existed where the bodies were left unattended in the truck, basement and corridor of the house. Guards who were sympathetic to the Romanov family were left with the bodies.

Another theory is that Anastasia and Alexei managed to escape and lived in Bulgaria. In 1953, Peter Zamiatkin, who was a Royal Bodyguard, told a fellow patient that he had taken Anastasia and Alexei to his birth village on orders from the Tsar. In the aftermath of the execution, Zamiatkin reportedly escaped with the two children. The two children then lived out the rest of their lives under aliases in the Bulgarian town of Gabarevo.

The Romanov grave was formally excavated in 1991, despite being found nearly a decade earlier.

The grave only held nine of the supposed eleven who were executed. It was believed by some historians and scientists that the remains of Anastasia and her younger brother Alexei were not part of the burial. The Russians contested this idea, claiming that one of the missing bodies was that of Maria, not Anastasia. Whilst the Russians used technical computer programming to reconstruct photographs of Anastasia with the skulls in the grave, the Americans believed the missing body to be Anastasias due to none of the skeletons showing evidence of immaturity.

The Royal family was formally buried in 1998, and a 5’7 body was interned under the name of Anastasia

The final twist of this mysterious story came in 2007. The “Yurovsky Note” claimed that two bodies were removed from the grave and cremated some distance away in order to disguise the execution and burial of the Romanov’s. On August 23rd 2007 Russian archaeologists discovered the remains of two burned partial skeletons in the region where the Royal family was buried. The remains were assessed and one skeleton was discovered to be male and between the ages of 10 and 15, the other skeleton was roughly between the ages of 18 and 23. The two remains were discovered with various calibres of bullets and shards of a container containing sulphuric acid.

Multiple testing by various organisations confirmed that the remains belonged to Alexei and one of his sisters. This proved conclusively that all family members were killed in 1918. Finally, Russian forensic scientists confirmed on the 30th April 2008 that the remains were those of Alexei and one of his 4 sisters. In March 2009, the final results of DNA testing were published by Dr. Michael Coble of the U.S. Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory, proving that all 4 Grand Duchesses have finally been accounted for, and no one escaped the murder.
