When people talk about the cookie diet plan, there are usually two types of reactions. One reaction is to say “Wow, that’s exciting! I’d love to eat cookies and lose weight!” and the other one is, “Oh yea that’s a nice fantasy…eat cookies and lose weight, ha ha..” or something to that effect. In my personal opinion the cookie diet plan is not a name that does this program justice because it sounds silly when in fact, it’s not silly at all.

It is an extremely smart and logical way to lose weight. The way it works is like this, everybody knows that it takes a low calorie diet to successfully lose weight. (Or, you can do enough exercise that will offset your calorie intake and create a negative calorie deficiency every week but that is MUCH more difficult to do.) However, a low calorie diet is hard to keep up with due to hunger pains which is something nobody should have to go through. When you eat very little calories you can get hungry again very quickly. Most foods that suppress your hunger are fatty and high in calories so they won’t help you lose weight at all.

What the Doctor who invented the cookie diet plan did was create a food that is LOW in calories, but also suppresses your hunger naturally using amino acids and food proteins. He is one of the only people to ever develop a low calorie food that is a natural hunger suppressant. Why more people haven’t done it, I have no idea. It’s simple, logical and scientific.

Basically, you eat 7 cookies a day which is about 500 calories and then a nutritious dinner consisting of lean meat and a green vegetable which is about 300. This gives you an 800 calorie/day diet and would normally be near impossible if it weren’t for the hunger suppressing agents in the cookie. I would recommend the cookie diet plan to anyone who is looking to lose weight the healthy way.

Losing weight can be a challenge for many people. Being overweight is associated with many different health risks including heart attack, stroke, and diabetes, just to name a few. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, obesity has more than doubled since 1970! With all the promotions for fast food, busy lifestyles and economic hardship, weight loss is getting harder and harder every year. I’ve created this post to provide a road map to weight loss. I’ll detail some key components of how to lose weight fast, and most importantly, keep it off! Healthy weight loss is two-fold:

Proper Nutrition, Not Starvation, Can Lead to Fast Weight Loss

Most people are under the impression that in order to lose weight, they need to stop eating. While this does have some truth to it, there is a lot more to losing weight than just not eating. It isn’t a coincidence that so many people drop 10 or 20 pounds just to gain back everything they lost. By going on extreme low calorie diets, your body will go into starvation mode, because it doesn’t know when it will get more nutrients! By eating so few calories, your body slows down its calorie burning processes and starts hoarding fat. This is why you see results initially, but as soon as you start to eat again, your body balloons right back to your initial weight. In addition to that, your body won’t be getting the nourishment it needs to function properly. You may feel like you’re always in a bad mood, tired, or even show signs of depression. Due to a hormone imbalance, you might constantly crave unhealthy foods. Assuming you’re trying to exercise, you likely won’t have the energy to get in a great workout or to repair properly afterwards.

The key to fast weight loss isn’t always low calories. It is consuming the RIGHT calories. If you’re exercising like crazy and trying to live on 1,000 calories per day, your body is going to be a mess! So what should you eat to lose weight quickly? Without getting too complicated, you want to consume hefty amounts of protein, fiber and water. You want to avoid or limit things like sugars, starchy carbs and fats.

You don’t have to count every single calorie you eat. You just need to make sure what you’re eating is healthy. One of the easiest methods to use for weight loss is the plate method. Separate your breakfast, lunch and dinner plate into sections as follows:

1. 1/2 your plate should be non-starchy carbs – I’m talking about VEGGIES especially. Things like broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, etc. That doesn’t mean cover them in veggie dip or saute them in 5 tablespoons of butter either! Learn to love veggies for what they are. A good, healthy source of nutrients.

2. 1/3 of your plate should be lean protein – This is your fish, chicken, turkey, or any other lean meat. Things like beans are also great sources of protein.

The rest should be starchy carbs – This is a small portion of things like brown rice, wheat bread, wheat noodles, etc.

This isn’t a state-of-the-art system, but it is a simple plan that everyone can follow that will work. If you look at your plate and you have 2 pieces of broccoli and a giant pile of noodles or fried rice, you need to make some adjustments.

Things to Eliminate Completely

In order to lose weight quickly, there are some common things you will have to get rid of completely:

1. White Flour – White flour and whole-wheat flour differ significantly in their nutritional value. In order to really get rid of that hard to lose belly fat, you need to let go of white flour products like white bread, white rice, tortillas, and anything else with white flour in it. What’s the alternative? Whole wheat flour products

2. High Fructose Corn Syrup and other refined sugars – Read your ingredients! Sugar is a major factor in weight gain and the ability to lose weight fast. Sugar is sugar but getting your sugars from things like fruit, which provide some nutritional benefits, is much better than getting sugar from processed treats. What’s the alternative? Eat things with natural sugars like fruit!

Exercise Leads to Muscle Definition and Keeping the Pounds Off

When it comes to weight loss, the most important benefits are the health benefits, but let’s be honest, most people wouldn’t mind having a better body too. As a trainer, I hear it all the time. “I want to tone up! Sculpt and tone. How do I get better muscle definition?” If your goal is to get some muscle definition, it doesn’t matter how good your diet is. You have to exercise! Your muscles will not grow unless you make them work.

What Exercises Help You Lose Weight Fast?

Exercise, especially weight lifting, is not a simple thing. There are many different styles and techniques you can utilize. The exercise program that works best for you will depend on your goals and your individual body. There a few things just about everyone can count on when it comes to being able to lose weight fast:

1. You need to do cardio and Resistance Training – If you want to see the best results, you need to do a combination of cardiovascular exercise and weight lifting. I see people get frustrated all the time because they run on the treadmill for 60+ minutes per day but still don’t look how they want. You cannot get muscle definition without muscles! In order to build muscle, you have to lift weights. And Vice Versa, to maintain a healthy heart and burn the most fat, you need to do some type of cardiovascular exercise.

2. Use a lot of full body exercises – When it comes to losing weight fast and burning fat, full body exercises typically work better than isolated exercises. An example of a full body exercise is a squat with a shoulder press. By using your legs, core and arms, you’ll burn a significant amount of calories while improving your muscular strength. An example of a less effective calorie burning exercise would be a seated biceps curl. If your goal is to have nice biceps, this is a great workout for you. If your goal is to lose weight fast, you’ll see much better results going with a high-calorie burner like the squat and press.

1. Try High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) -HIIT is a safe, effective workout program to lose high amounts of fat in a short time. HIIT is so effective because it is great for weight loss while promoting muscle growth, as opposed to steady state cardio, which burns calories but doesn’t offer much for muscular improvement.

Do not Forget These Supplies in Your Vehicle's First Aid Kit

How To Overcome The Top Three Challenges To Weight Loss

Losing weight is the number one New Year's resolution that people make. Every January and February the gym I attend is full but by early March, only the usual die hards are left. Why is it such a challenge to keep those unwanted pounds off?

Here are the top three reasons I see the most:

* Perceived lack of time to exercise

* Unhealthy diets

* Lack of motivation – easily discouraged

Let's start with perceived lack of time to exercise. Most of my clients use this as one of their main excuses why they do not exercise. Do not you make time everyday for things you really do not need to do such as, watch TV? It's how we chose to use our time that determinates how we feel. That is why I hear so many people say I'm tired to exercise. This statement is probably true, but one of the reasons you may be tired is lack of exercise. Do you realize that exercise is a proven way to get the energy you desire?

Many runners get a "runner's high" or "adrenaline rush." It really becomes addicting and is not a habit you want to break! Once you add exercise to your daily routine, you begin to feel better, have more energy and can handle stress more easily. Many times after a workout I see things in a new perceptive and a sense of relief. Working out is better for you than any drug you may turn to, and without the harmful effects.

The next challenge to losing weight is your diet. Many people turn to fad diets, skip meals or join a weight-loss program. I am not against all weight-loss programs, but most do not teach you how to make healthy meals or exercise exercise. Many people want quick results so they try what sees like the easiest and fastest way to lose weight. Unfortunately, they usually gain it right back in a matter of months or weeks.

Right now obesity is at an all time high which has led to many health problems such as, heart disease, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. One report I recently read said that prescription drugs are on the rise, and the majority are used to lower cholesterol and high blood pressure. One physicist stated that "a lot of it is related to obesity. We've become a couch potato culture; it's a lot easier to pop a pill than to exercise regularly or diet."

Lastly, lack of motivation and discourception is another challenge to weight-loss. How do we get motivated to begin exercising and eating healthily? The best way I have found is to have an accounting partner who has the expertise to help you get started and encourage you not to quit. Remember, it took some time to get where you are and it will take time and effort to reach your desired goals. To be healthy in mind, body and spirit, you must get up and get moving, determination is the key!

In conclusion, overcoming these challenges to losing weight is possible. How? Making time to exercise, learning how to eat healthy, and staying encouraged and motivated with an accounting partner or coach. As a person who has been diagnosed in this area, I guarantee you will not only look better, but most importantly you will feel better. Keep pressing on and you will live a longer, healthier, and happier life!

PMS – Healthy Ways to Handle the Symptoms

Pre-menstrual syndrome or PMS as we usually name it, is a phase that almost every young female adult and woman go through each month. Studies show that around 85% of women around the world experience physical and emotional symptoms associated with PMS every month; and 3% to 8% of them go through some extreme forms of physical and emotional stress. PMS is usually experienced a week or two before the menstrual cycle starts.

Symptoms of PMS:

PMS is no fun! The symptoms associated with PMS varies from a range of physical to emotional changes –

• Incessant food cravings

• Mood Swings

• Headache

• Muscle cramps

• Lower backache

• Fatigue

• Mild depression

• Bloating

• Breast swelling and tenderness

These are some of the most common symptoms that women complain about during PMS.

Factors leading to PMS:

There is no specific reason understood as to why women suffer PMS before every menstrual cycle; however, there might be a number of factors attributing to PMS –

Hormonal changes – The levels of estrogen and progesterone rise and fall before/during the menstrual cycle

Chemical changes – Ovarian steroids modulate activity in certain parts of your brain associated with PMS.

Lifestyle changes – You may experience extreme forms of PMS if you lead an unhealthy lifestyle. Smoking, alcohol consumption, drinking too much caffeine, lack of vitamins and minerals in the diet are some factors.

Overweight and lack of exercise – It is often found that obese women go through higher levels of PMS. Also, physical inactivity leads to PMS.

Healthy ways to treat PMS:

Follow a healthy lifestyle and exercise regularly to get your PMS over control –

Smaller meals – We often feel bloated during our PMS days. So, it is advisable to take meals in smaller portions for 4-6 times over the day. You’ll feel less bloated and full.

Limit Salt and Sugar – It is our craving for salty and sugary food that increases especially during this time. Limit sodium intake to prevent fluid retention and the feeling of bloated out. Excess sugar (candies, cookies, jams & jellies, pies, cake, sweets) leads to rapid fluctuations in blood sugar thus aggravating moodiness and irritability.

Increase intake of complex carbs and fibres – Whole grains and legumes, brown rice, fruits and veggies work towards enhancing your mood and control unhealthy cravings.

Say no to cravings – Often to lift our mood and get rid of physical stress, we crave packet food rich in unsaturated fats and processed carbohydrates like chips, cookies and processed cold cuts. These tasty snacks lead to over-eating and upsetting our digestive system.

Calcium intake – Calcium-rich diet is anyways an essential nutrient in a women’s diet. However, during PMS, increasing calcium intake in diet has been shown to reduce mood swings and depressions, fluid retention and pain. You might also consider taking some calcium supplements under doctor’s prescription.

Limit caffeine and alcohol – These days you might have to think twice before filling that mug with your favourite coffee. Or you might have to do with a glass of juice or mocktail at one of those parties. Caffeine and alcohol has proven to increase stress and tension while worsening PMS pain.

Exercise daily – Enjoy aerobics and cardio training (running, jogging, brisk walking or swimming) these days. These exercises set the pace of your heart thus easing anxiety and stress. It also helps maintain your weight during this phase.

Relax – Take some time out for yourself and treat yourself to a spa or massage day. Relax your body and it will make you feel way better.

Spend quality time – Good company works wonders on emotional stress. Spend some time with your friends or loved ones. Do what you like doing the most and you’ll end up forgetting half of your PMS symptoms.

What So Great About GL Diet?

GL stands for glycemic load. It is believed by many health professionals that low GL diet will be more popular than low-fat, low-carbohydrate (carb) or low-calorie.

The low-fat and low-calorie diets do not stop obesity epidemic in countries like Britain and United States despite the fact that the average number of calories and percentage of calories from fat went down. To the contrary, the obesity epidemic has in fact accelerated. Obesity will cause us gets higher risk of developing into many medical health issues including heart disease.

Dr Atkins realized that it was the carbohydrate that increases the blood sugar and hence the weight. In order to prevent the body from converting carbs into fat, a high-protein, high-fat and low-carb diet was proposed. It works but it does not really make one healthy.

In 1980s, people started measuring GI (glycemic index) of foods, which is a measure of how fast the sugar in food increases one's blood sugar level compared with glucose. GI diet suggests limiting high-GI foods but does not restrict the quantity of carbohydrates.

GL means the quantity of carbs (the Atkins factor) multiplied by the quality (the GI factor). For instance, watermelon has fast-releasing sugar (GI of 72), but a large slice has only 6g of carbs. So multiplying the quantity (6g) by the quality (0.72) gives 4.3 GLs.

The GL value of food tells us more things: what that food will do to our blood sugar level and hence, our appetite, energy and weight.

Low GL diet can be achieved either by eating a low-carb, high-protein diet (and Atkins) or with a higher carb, but strictly low GI carbs and moderate protein diet. Patrick Holford, founder of the Institute of Optimum Nutrition in London, prefers the latter approach. What he suggests is a meal of 45 GLs a day, spaced out in 3 meals and 2 snacks, combining protein with carbohydrates will even out blood sugar and maximize weight loss.

In clinical trials, Atkins and South Beach diets give a weight loss of about 500g a week while the above-mentioned low-GL diet causes a weight loss of 590g a week with 94 percent of participants claiming better energy. The findings were published in the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine.

A paper published by the American Medical Association also suggested that dietary glycemic load (GL) and not just overall energy intake (calories), influences weight loss.

Moderate reduction in GL appears to increase the rate of body fat loss, particularly for women. Diets based on low-GI wholegrain products maximize cerebrovascular risk reduction, particularly if protein take is high.

Will GL diet become the future of safe, effective and life-long weight control, as what Holford suggests? Sometimes it is too early to tell. Let us wait and see if more favorable clinical findings will emerge to make this come true.
