The Difference Between Sleep Apnea and Snoring

The first time I heard about sleep apnea, I thought it was simply another term for snoring, or a certain type of snoring. Later I found out that there is a big difference between the two.

Snoring occurs when the passage of air in the throat is partly unstructured, usually because of a narrowing of the airway, making the air flow through soft tissues in the back of the throat. These soft tissues then begin to vibrate and make that familiar snoring sound. When a person snores, he or she continues to breathe through the slumber. That loud sound of snoring usually does not bother the sleeper, only the bedside partner.

Apnea is the act of holding your breath for a long time, very much like divers do when they explore the shallow sea floor without the help of air tanks. Sleep apnea is the condition of involuntarily holding your breath during sleep. It occurs in the same region of the throat and can be accompanied by very loud snoring, but the difference is that the throat becomes completely blocked during sleep, sometimes lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes, making the sleeper choke and suddenly wake up in the middle of the night, gasping for air. This can happen several times throughout the sleep.

What is cause for concern is that the next day the person usually does not have any recollection of struggling for breath during sleep. Most of the time, the bedside partner is the first person to detect such an occurrence. The partner may notice repeated silences from the other side of the bed, indicating signs of the person holding his breath or having breathing difficulties. If undetected and left untreated, as is normally the case with persons sleeping alone, this common disorder can be life-threatening, as an extended period of apnea can be dangerously lethal.

If you sleep alone and find the following signs, they may indicate that you went through sleep apnea during the previous night sleep. First of all, there is the condition where you still feel un-refreshed in the morning after a night's sleep. You will probably experience heads because of the low supply of oxygen, or your throat is dry and sore from the friction with heavily obstructed air flow. Because you have not been getting enough sleep, you will notice being sleepy or drowsy during the daytime. These are probable indications, but if you remember suddenly waking up in the middle of the night, sometimes sweating, while gasping for air, it is a very possible symptom for sleep apnea, and not because you had a nightmare (in fact, some nightmares may have been induced by sleep apnea).

There are various reasons why the throat is obstructed, and there are already cures for sleep apnea. So, if you detect these symptoms, please learn more about the possible solutions to overcome this common but serious problem.

Rate of Speech – Way Too Fast!

A common complaint about some speakers is that they talk too fast. Listeners are left lying in the dust, figuratively, trying to understand these speakers. By the time the listeners figure out the speakers’ message, the speakers are two topics ahead.

Speech rates varies in different parts of the US. New York City, for example, has a very fast rate of speech, while in some parts of the Deep South, it is much slower. A telephone customer service agent in NYC would be well-advised to slow his rate when speaking to a customer from many places in Mississippi or Georgia, for example.

Speech rate also varies with urgency, or in some cases, self-confidence. A person with low self-confidence may be worried someone else will not have patience to listen to him, so the speaker will talk faster.

When speakers are nervous, as when giving a presentation, their rate often increases. Considerable practice while visualizing the audience can help reduce nervousness. Other strategies include relaxation exercises, and know what to add or delete from a presentation if the rate is too slow or fast for the allowed time.

A slower speech rate should be used when the subject is technical or complicated, such as when an engineer is explaining a complex problem to a customer who is in another field of expertise. Speech rate can be overly fast due to certain speech or neurological disorders, and may be the first or most obvious symptom of them.

Easy things a listener can do to help a fast speaker are to show he has the interest and patience to listen. Sit down and give the fast speaker your full attention. If that is not enough, speak slowly yourself, to give the fast speaker a non-verbal signal to slow down. (Speaking slowly on an outgoing message for a phone often is very effective at slowing incoming speakers’ rates, so you can understand them!) Lastly, you can directly ask the speaker to slow down, and explain whatever you did not understand. Professional speech coaching is available to help reduce speech rates, in many cases.

Running 101 – How To Ease Into Running, From A Former Fat Girl's Perspective

I've always been more of the "sofa athlete" than actual athlete, but beginning in my mid-30's, I realized that not only had I retained all of my high school fat, but over the years, those fat cells had made many friends, and they were all beginning to congregate in the most unappealing places.

Whatever meager metabolic magic that had worked to keep me toggling between a size 8 and 10 through my 20's, had apparently felt a little "crowded" by all the new fat cells, so it moved elsewhere, and left no forwarding address.

So, here I am, getting fatter and fatter … Well, I've always known running was a great way to stay in shape (have you EVER seen a fat marathon runner … NO!), But I just knew that it was not for me. It was too hard, and the constant pounding on the pavement made my bobs hurt. Luckily, I had the incredible good fortune to acquire a friend that was a runner, and she showed me the light …

For instance, did you know that to be a runner does not mean you have to sprint the entire time? I had no clue … no wonder I could not run more than 100 yards without wanting to throw up. Also, taking short walk breaks was not only permitted, but even encouraged by professional marathoners (check out Jeff Galloway on amazon.com).

We started out nice and slow … we would run (slow jog, is more like it) for 2 minutes, then walk for 1 minute. We kept this up for over 2 miles, and I did not puke or collapse once! Prior to this, I had never even run 1 mile … the closest I came in 7th grade PE class when I did almost 1 complete lap around the track (that's only 1/4 mile). Currently, I am doing a 5 minute run with a 1 minute walk break, and I run between 10 and 13 miles per week (3 days).

When I finally participated in my first 5K, I found that the excitement of being in a foot race with hundreds upon hundreds of other people gave me the energy to run even faster than my usual times. I completed the 5K in 42 minutes or so, which is just under a 14 minute mile. My fastest 5K time is only 36 minutes, but that's a terrific improvement over the non-running couch potato that I used to be.

Respironics Trilogy 100 – Helping COPD Patients Breathe Easier

In case no one has informed you lately, there is now new hope for Respiratory Failure patients in their own home. In days past, typical COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) patients that retain CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) had little choice but to go to the emergency room and incur a hospital stay; typically in the Intensive Care Unit. Mechanical ventilation or some other type of respiratory assist device would be used to help get their carbon dioxide levels under control and they would be sent back home, only to repeat the process several days later.

Now, thanks to Phillips/Respironics and your local durable medical equipment (DME) company—you have a new option. The device is called a Trilogy and operates as a ventilator does, but does so non-invasively. That means no tube has to be put into the trachea and the device can be used with a mask, similar to a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) or BiLevel machine. This means the patient’s comfort level is increased tremendously and they can breathe much easier as well.

I recently had a patient tell me, “This thing has changed my life. In fact, I believe it’s saved my life because before using it, I could never get enough air.” Testimonials such as this one are numerous and those of us working in the medical field are delighted to hear them. Making a difference in someone’s life and taking care of problems are some of the main reasons most of us are in the medical field.

On the technical side, the Phillips/Respironics Trilogy can used both invasively and non-invasively and the controls and parameters are adjustable in much the same way hospital ventilators are. Modes of ventilation offered are VC, PC, AC, SIMV and BiPAP S, T or S/T. You can set the Tidal Volumes, Frequency, Inspiratory Time, choose between Square and Ramp wave forms and it includes all the bells and whistles that are typical of most vents. The advantage for someone requiring control of their CO2 retention is that the device can not only offer tidal volume control, but also has pressure support in it’s AVAPS setting, making the device easier to breathe through than a standard Bilevel device.

Whether, you are a patient, have a family member who you feel would benefit or are a patient advocate for a Respiratory Failure patient and feel the Trilogy would be of benefit, talk with your doctor, case manager or medical equipment company and help someone who “can’t seem to get enough air” finally breathe easier.

Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms and Treatments

When people drink heavily for extended periods of time and suddenly stop or cut down on their alcohol intake they may be affected by alcohol withdrawal syndrome which could potentially put their lives at risk.

Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal may start as soon as 2 hours subsequent to the final alcoholic drink was consumed. The symptoms can start with shakiness and anxiety to delirium tremens (DTs), seizures and even death. Many of these symptoms can continue for weeks after becoming sober. Delirium Tremens causes death in an estimated 1% up to 5% of people with this alcohol withdrawal symptom and is characterized by feverishness, accelerated heartbeat, and confusion.

Even if the symptoms appear mild, it is important to get treatment as soon as possible as the withdrawal symptoms may escalate rapidly and become severe in a short space of time. Medical personnel can administer treatments to lessen the severity of alcohol withdrawal and even prevent DTs and seizures. If you have had alcohol withdrawal in the past or suffer from respiratory or cardiac illnesses, have any infections or have experienced seizures in the past, it is important that you seek medical assistance as soon as possible.

Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal such as feverishness, hallucinations, confusion, irregular heartbeat, and seizures should be considered an emergency. The person suffering from alcohol withdrawal needs immediate medical attention and should be taken to the nearest emergency treatment facility or emergency personnel should be called to scene.

Neurotransmitters, chemicals responsible for transmission of messages in the brain, are disrupted by alcohol. Excessive drinking on a daily basis and prolonged heavy drinking cause suppression of these brain chemicals. Take the neurotransmitter GABA for instance. This is the neurotransmitter that makes us feel calm and relaxed. Excessive alcohol consumption suppresses this chemical to such a degree that larger and larger quantities of alcohol are needed to achieve the same feeling from the narcotic. This is known as tolerance. The neurotransmitter, glutamate, causes the feelings of excitability in our brains. The body produces a higher level of glutamate in heavy drinkers to compensate for the suppression effect of the alcohol in the bloodstream.

Chronic drinkers who suddenly drastically limit their alcohol intake or stop all together suddenly find themselves confronted with brain hyper-excitability. The body is still producing large amounts of neurotransmitters but they are not being suppressed by the alcohol anymore. This causes alcohol withdrawal symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, seizures, irritability and delirium tremens. These effects are the opposite of those associated with drinking alcohol.

The severity of the alcohol withdrawal symptoms is closely correlated with the period of time the person has been drinking and how much they drink. You can begin experiencing mild alcohol withdrawal symptoms anything from 6 to 12 hours subsequent to you having had your last alcoholic beverage. Your blood alcohol level may still be fairly high at this stage. Some of the mild symptoms you may experience include:

Shakiness of the hands

Sweating

Anxiety, generally mild

Nausea and Vomiting

Headaches

Insomnia (not being able to sleep or erratic sleep)

After a period of 12 to 24 hours following you having had your last drink, you may find that you experience hallucinations. These are usually visual but can also be tactile or auditory. Most hallucinations fade within a 48 hour period. This is referred to as alcoholic hallucinosis but should not be confused with hallucinations experienced when suffering from delirium tremens. Alcohol withdrawal sufferers are usually aware that these hallucinations are not real.

Within 24 to 48 hours subsequent to the last alcoholic beverage being consumed there is a risk of seizures, although these can actually begin within 2 hours after the person stops drinking. People who have gone through detoxification in the past or have had previous seizures are at a much higher risk. Delirium tremens can start anything from 48 to 72 hours after the person has stopped drinking. People who suffer from various medical illnesses, are elderly, have impaired liver function or who have had seizures during past withdrawals are at high risk of developing delirium tremens.

Some of the possible delirium tremens (DT) symptoms can include:

Confusion, disorientation, confusion, severe anxiety

Primarily visual hallucinations which appear real to the sufferer

Excessive sweating

Seizures

Raised blood pressure

Erratic or rapid heartbeat

Severe Tremors

Feverishness

To assess whether you are suffering from alcohol withdrawal syndrome, your medical practitioner will have to obtain a full medical history including how long you have been a drinker and the quantity you generally imbibe. He will also need to know when your last drink was and if you’ve suffered from alcohol withdrawal in the past. You will also be questioned on your medical history and whether you are currently suffering from mental or physical health conditions. The doctor will also need to know if you abuse other substances.

Your physician will do a physical examination and check for withdrawal symptoms while also making sure you are not suffering from conditions that can complicate the alcohol withdrawal such as coronary artery disease, congestive heart disease, infections, irregular heartbeats, nervous system issues, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver disease or pancreatitis. Blood and urine tests will also be used to check blood alcohol levels, blood count to check for infection, liver function, electrolyte levels as well as additional drugs in your bloodstream or urine. The doctor can use these findings to determine whether or not you are suffering from alcohol withdrawal and how severe it is.

Your medical practitioner will decide based on the severity of your symptoms on whether to treat your case as an outpatient or an inpatient. Outpatient care is generally a lot cheaper and is preferable if you have a good support structure. If you do not have a good social support structure or are pregnant you may be required to be treated as an inpatient. You may also be booked into a facility for treatment if you have a previous history of:

Withdrawal symptoms on a severe level

DTs or withdrawal seizures

Previous detoxification

Specific psychiatric or medical illnesses

The aim of the treatments are to reduce complications and control the withdrawal symptoms as well as starting therapy to encourage abstinence from alcohol in the future.

Various drugs are used in the treatment including benzodiazepines such as chlordiazepoxide (Librium), oxazepam (Serax), diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan) to control anxiety, confusion, and shakiness. These drugs also reduce the occurrence of delirium tremens and withdrawal seizures. Carbamazepine (Tegretol) is used in people with milder symptoms. This is an anticonvulsant which is not addictive or sedating and has low abuse potential. Your physician may also add extra drugs to your regimen to control withdrawal complications, such as:

Anti-psychotics to help with hallucinations and agitation

Beta-blockers to reduce high blood pressure and lower heart rate or reduce strain on the heart of coronary artery disease sufferers during alcohol withdrawal

Clonidine (Catapres) to control blood pressure

Phenytoin (Dilantin) to treat any underlying seizure disorders as this anticonvulsant is not effective for withdrawal seizures

Treating alcohol withdrawal syndrome does not treat the addiction, only the withdrawal symptoms. People should follow up with treatment and therapy for alcohol dependence or alcohol abuse to get to the root cause of the disease. While alcohol abuse may be curbed with therapy on an outpatient basis, people with an alcohol dependence may require more intense treatments. Your doctor could prescribe certain medication to help prevent you drinking after your detoxification. Attending groups such as Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics anonymous and taking part in their twelve step program may also be of some benefit. Your doctor may recommend a stay at a treatment facility for a period of time to take part in cognitive-behavioral therapy, family therapy and a twelve step program as a combined treatment.

Hemorrhoid Treatment Options – Is Hemorrhoid Surgery Your Only Option?

If you suffer from external hemorrhoids, there are many ways to treat them. Hemorrhoids make everyday actions like walking and even sitting painful, and relief from the pain that they cause is very important. Home treatments have proven to be effective, safe, and inexpensive. Petroleum jelly is one of the most frequent home treatments.

External hemorrhoids are generally caused by undue stress or pressure on the veins in the anus area. These hemorrhoids are highly sensitive, and cause burning and itching in the anal area. Petroleum jelly can help to alleviate the symptoms, applied as needed.

A calculated change in lifestyle is another external hemorrhoid treatment option you can take and is sometimes the most important. Your choice of undergarments is a big factor as cotton will relate some of the swilling and irritation of the anus area by allowing the effect area to "breath". Also fabric made from cotton will help keep the area free from excess moister. Although this may seem like a small or even insignificant change you can make it is important to do all that you can to combat this problem.

The types of physical activates you partake in also play a part. Picking up heavy items, coughing constantly, extended time of standing and sitting and constipation all can cause hemorrhoids. By just changing your lifestyle using some these ways can help you manage your hemorrhoids and sometimes destroy them for good.

Phenylephrine, also known as Preparation H, is the other method. The irritating and swelling near the area of concern is neutralized by the applying the phenylephrine, the active ingredient found in Preparation H. The hemorrhoids should be taken care of if the irritation and swelling is reduced. This procedure needs to be constantly repeated in order to confirm that your ailment is gone. The amount of time and application needed to cure the condition is dependent on how different of the case.

These forms of treatment are preferred because they are effective and not as expensive as conventional treatment methods. While surgical procedures are sometimes considered, they are mostly reserved for the most serve causes. Other means of home treatment should be explored first, before considering surgery, because there is always an alternative without having to spend money, time and effort to surgery.

If you are suffering from hemorrhoids there are no doubts that you have to properly address this problem and fast. Although they may help alleviate some of the symptoms it is important to remember that topical solutions such as petroleum jelly and Preparation H do not get the root cause of the problem. Because no definitive treatment exists, the adoption of lifestyle changes in diet, including incorporating supplements and natural food that aid in digestion and circulatory health are important along with positive changes in one's physical activates may eliminate your external hemorrhoids and reduce your chances for developing them again .

Development of Analytical Methods

In pharmacy, an analytical procedure is typically developed to test certain defined characteristics of a drug. Set against some accepted criteria for the identified characteristics, this process should follow a scientific approach based on a researcher’s intended purpose, as well as overall scope of the analytical method.

Some factors that should be considered during development of an analytical method include specificity, limits of detection, linearity, range, accuracy, precision and limits of quantification or LOQ. Other integral parts of the method are validation and inclusion of the hospital pharmacy in every stage possible.

Procedure

The Analytical Method Development involves a step-by-step method that takes into consideration equilibration times, scan/injection sequence with blanks, samples, placebos, sensitivity solution, controls and standards needed to maintain objectivity of the system.

Confirmatory test procedures will be put in place to ensure the unit functions correctly as a single integrated system. Other system suitability criteria such as peak tailing may also be required when applicable. During the early stages of method development, robustness of methods should be evaluated since this characteristic can help you determine which particular method would be submitted for approval by relevant pharmaceutical bodies.

Analytical procedures in preliminary stages of development are actually based on mechanistic understanding of the basic methodology, including prior experience. Note that experimental data from preliminary procedures can be applied as guide for further development, preferably submit development data as per the method validation criteria to experts within the pharmacy testing board to see if they support the findings.

Though method parameters can sometimes be altered, you can only understand effects of such changes by adopting a systematic approach for method robustness study. Start with an initial risk valuation then follow up with multivariate experiments. These approaches allow you to comprehend factorial parameter effects on method performance, and may also include analyses obtained from different stages of the drug manufacturing process from formulation to finished product. Some of the parameters to consider in Analytical Method Development include:

A. Principle/Scope. Involves describing the basic principles of an analytical test/technology, including target analytes and sample types.

B. Apparatus/Equipment. List all the necessary approved equipment and components, some of which are instrument type, detector, dimensions and filter type.

C. Operating Parameters. It involves qualified optimal ranges and settings, including permitted adjustments that are supported by sources or validation findings crucial to the analysis. For even more vivid depictions of the project, a sketch drawing with experimental configuration or integration parameters may be put to use as applicable.

Data Reporting

The final stage in Analytical Method Development is data reporting, which is presenting the numeric findings consistently using instrumental capabilities and an accepted criteria. This method should show what format to consider when reporting results, such as by weight/volume or percentage label claim. All representing the specific number of probable figures required. According to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), there’s a standard method used for testing data to determine their conformance with set specifications.

For the chromatography technique, you should mention retention times (RTs) for identification using reference standard comparison basis, as well as relative retention times (RRTs) consisting of known and unknown impurities or acceptable ranges and sample findings on reporting criteria.

Marijuana Use Ups The Risk of Abusing More Potent Drugs

For Michael Murtaugh, who spent his addiction consuming drugs, running has provided a new lease of life. According to him, "running is still legal in all the 50 states of America," which is not the case as far as smoking pot is concerned. In fact, the latter has the nation divided.

Furthermore, the pursuit of a "runner's high" severely costs anything, while indulgence in substance abuse could involuntarily lead to job loss, incarceration, ill health, or in some cases even death. There is no such risk involved when one gets a natural "endorphin rush" from a run.

Michael's story is no different from the countless other victims of "pot" and "alcohol." Many like him experiment with drugs and other substances to mask the pain of a childhood abuse. Some may inadvertently get into drug abuse due to the early exposure to drugs by family members, friends, etc.

With the legalization of recreational pot use, serious concerns have been raised over the impact of such a significant change over adolescent. The change will not only lower the perception of risk of marijuana among youngsters, but also encourage them to indulge in marijuana abuse. In the light of such a landmark shift in the domain of substance abuse, it is time to reflect upon the repercussions on adolescents.

Adolescence and substance abuse

Adolescence and substance abuse are often closely linked, which increases the likelihood of developing lasting changes in the neural pathways of the brain. That could exacerbate the habit, leading to a deadly addiction. Considering such a close relationship, any kind of leeway has the potential to increase the rate of substance abuse and developing mental disorders.

As marijuana is a gateway drug, the probability that its prolonged use leading to experimenting with hard stuff, such as heroin and meth, is quite high. This has been corroborated by the ordinal of Michael, who started smoking pot at a reliably young age of 11 and eventually took to drinking alcohol and doing harder stuff, such as cocaine and meth. At 45, a drug weary Michael realized that he needed a new lease of life, one that would not make him a prisoner of drugs. Thereafter, it has been a long and arduous journey toward reform and sobriety.

With increasing public support for marijuana laws more than before, it has become essential to discuss the social and health-related consequences. The increased social acceptance can become a driving force behind the rise in substance abuse and drug-impaired driving. Of all, the tendency to experiment with harder drugs can pose a major problem for youngsters.

Teens do not consider pot risky

With the use of recreational marijuana or pot becoming legal in eight states in the US and in the District of Columbia, the possibility of teens advertently or inadvertently using the drug is quite high. Michael's case is not an isolated incident, there are many children in America who are increasingly getting hooked on the drug because they see many adults around them smoking "pot." What is even more alarming is the fact that many adolescents do not consider the practice of smoking marijuana or pot to be harmful for their health.

As per the recently released statistics, there was a decrease in the number of 12 to 17-year-olds who believed that smoking marijuana once a month or one to two times constituted a "great risk." One of the greatest dangers of marijuana use comes from the psychoactive agent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is present in higher concentrations than in the past.

Pot use is associated with abnormal brain development and is believed to impair memory, concentration and executive functioning skills. The prolonged use can spiral into a full-fledged addiction in future. Therefore, new recommendations advocating the screening of adolescents and preteens for marijuana use plays a crucial role in determining whether those kids would benefit from interventions or not. It is also imperative that parents set standards (by avoiding smoking or vaping marijuana or doing any sort of drugs in the child's presence).

Recovery road map

Marijuana, one of the most commonly used illic drugs under the federal law, has the potential to inflict a range of problems, such as euphoria, impaired memory, cognitive impairments, increased heart rate, paranoia, etc. The other long-term effects of marijuana abuse include respiratory problems, cardiovascular risks, psychological dependence, etc.

Quality Treatment for Prostate Cancer

Development of cancer in the prostate gland of the male reproductive system can be life threatening if it is not diagnosed and treated in the early stages. Patients of prostate cancer generally include senior age groups who need the best treatment for cure. Different types of treatments are available for prostate cancer, and the particular mode of treatment usually depends on the stage of the cancer.

Treatment for localized prostate cancer

If the cancer is still located only within the prostate, which is medically termed as localized prostate cancer or organ confined cancer, they might suggest a prostatectomy, which will involve the removal of the whole gland and surrounding tissue through surgery. The process is often followed by radiation in order to ensure a complete cure.

Treatment for locally advanced prostate cancer

When the cancer has advanced locally and has spread from the prostate gland to the surrounding tissues, the stage is categorized as locally advanced cancer. Radiation therapy, medication, followed by surgery can be the best treatment option in this case.

Treatment for advanced prostate cancer

When the cancer has spread from the prostate gland and has infected other parts of the body, the condition is marked as the advanced cancer. It is also termed as metastatic prostate cancer. At this stage, the chance of recovery for the patient can be really poor. Strict dosage of radiation and high medication are usually suggested.

The importance of quality treatment

In the treatment of cancer, it is really important that the patient is provided with quality treatment from the very beginning. Localized and locally advanced prostate cancer is curable with the right kind of treatment, but improper treatment can give cancer more time to reach advanced stages. So while selecting a prostate treatment clinic, be wise and choose only the best.

Radiation can be used:

i. As part of the primary treatment for cancers that grow outside the prostate gland and into the surrounding tissues. This treatment is resorted to along with hormone therapy.

ii. As the initial rounds of treatment for “low-grade” cancer that is still restricted within the gland. Cure rates for patients suffering from these types of cancers are almost the same as those for patients getting radical prostatectomy.

iii. If the cancer is not entirely removed or if it recurs in the region of the post-surgery.

iv. To provide relief from present and probable future symptoms and to reduce the size of the tumor, if the cancer has reached an advanced stage.

HIV Education in the Schools Across America

AIDS has devastated the lives of many citizens in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that the number of AIDS infections among young Americans between the ages of 13 to 25 rose nearly 20 percent, and approximately 50 percent of new infections are among individuals who are younger than 25 years of age. Therefore, finding better methods to communicate the risk of AIDS transmission are greatly needed to protect our young people and preserve the next generation.

Young people in the United States are at a persistent risk of HIV infection. This risk is especially notable for youth of minority races and ethnicities. Continued HIV prevention outreach and education efforts, including programs on abstinence and delaying initiation of sexual relations, are required as new generations replace the older generations that benefited from earlier prevention strategies.

I believe that there should be more HIV and AIDS education in the school systems across America. I feel that this is an area of education that we could improve to protect and preserve our next generation. There are two reasons that I feel this way. My first reason is to prevent a student from being discriminated against, and the second reason is giving education to the students on preventing the spread of this disease.

My first reason for believing there should be more education about HIV and AIDS in the school system is the way I was treated when I was diagnosed with HIV. I was diagnosed with HIV at 14 years old and due to the lack of education to the teaching staff in the earlier years; I wasn’t permitted to attend class in a regular school setting. Instead I was forced to be home schooled by the board of education, (homebound program) in which I wasn’t taught all the subjects as a regular student would be. I wasn’t taught mathematics at a high school level so when I decided to attend college I had a lot of difficulties in the area of mathematics. On the other hand, English was drilled into my head like a nail, which I am grateful for. The reason for this was that my homebound teacher was an English Professor before she started teaching in the homebound program.

Even though I wasn’t taught as well as those students attending classes in a regular school setting, I have become an excellent student in college despite my difficulties in math. I do believe, however, that the school system has gotten better. I haven’t had any problems with discrimination while attending college. That, at least, is a good thing!

Secondly, I feel that if there had been more education on the prevention and spread of this disease, I might not have contracted it. Had I known about the risks of this disease, I may not be infected today. Even though I contracted HIV through a blood transfusion, maybe if I had been more educated on the ways it is transmitted, I could have somehow prevented myself from becoming infected.

Therefore, I believe that there should be more education for students. The students are our next generation. They should be educated about the risks of HIV infection. I feel it should be a requirement for the schools to inform students about the dangers of the disease as well as the myths of being around someone who is infected.

Even now I feel I have to be careful when I disclose my diagnosis, which prevents me from making friends for fear of being rejected. I feel that if there were more education, I could feel more comfortable talking about my situation of having this disease. Ultimately, I wouldn’t be afraid of causing a panic among my peers. Finally, I believe with more education it would prevent the rise of students becoming infected with this disease. I believe that it is our obligation to protect the next generation.

Asian Flush and Its Connection to Cancer

If your face turns red when you drink, you may be experiencing Asian flush. Researchers are now saying that people with Asian flush are at risk for more than embarrassment. Studies show that people with this condition (also known as alcohol flush reaction, Asian glow or Asian blush) may be at higher risk for throat cancer.

Asian flush, also known as alcohol flush syndrome is common in over thirty percent of Eastern Asians, particularly Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. Typical responses are a red, flushed face, swollen or itchy skin, and sometimes nausea and dizziness. Lack of an enzyme called ALDH2 which is responsible for breaking down acetaldehyde, the byproduct of the metabolism of alcohol is the cause of these reactions. There are varying degrees of the condition, leaving some simply embarrassed at their physical appearance, and others physically unable to consume alcohol. Because the ALDH2 enzyme is unable to break the byproduct called acetaldehyde, sufferers of Asian flush experience the unseen symptoms of the build-up of this toxin.

Furthermore, it is possible to have either one or two copies of the gene responsible for this deficiency of ALDH2. Those with two copies are likely to have more adverse reactions and therefore drink far less than someone with one copy. Those with one copy may develop an acetaldehyde dependency, and put themselves and a much higher risk for throat cancer.

This is the same type of cancer that is caused by smoking – called the squamous cell esophageal cancer. It can be rented but does not have a high survival rate. Someone who is lacking the ALDH2 enzyme can be up to ten time more likely to develop throat cancer than someone who has it. Even moderate drinking can increase the risk of this cancer tremendously.

In recent years the young community of Asian flush sufferers have discovered that antihistamines and other OTC drugs can be used to prevent the flushing effects, but this only masks the reaction, and does not decrease the risk of cancer. If you are considering this method to cure your Asian flush, it is important to consult your doctor first, because some OTC drugs can have harmful side-effects when mixed with alcohol. The amount and frequency of this method should also be treated with caution.

The No Red Face Formula is a product that appeared on the market in 2006. It claims that with an e-book, it can teach you techniques to cure your Asian flush. However, the techniques in the book are copymitted material and very little information is available about what these techniques are and whether they can actually help in the breaking down of acetaldehyde or if they simply mask the flushing effects. It is also unclear whether this product has any effect on the aforementioned potential risk of cancer.
