An Overview of Major Or Clinical Depression

Most individuals will go through a feeling of sadness or depression at certain points in their lifetime especially under certain circumstances such as the loss of a loved one, divorce, or one of life's many dispositions.

For the majority of individuals These feelings are only temporary and pass within a relatively short period of time, however, when an individual experiences intents levels of sadness and feelings of hopelessness on daily basis or nearly everyday and it interferees with their life, this condition is referred to in the medical field as clinical depression, major depression, or major depressive disorder. Clinical depression is a serious illness that requires professional medical help to overcome.

The Prevalence of Depression

Clinical or major depression affects millions of individuals worldwide regardless of age, race, or economic status. Estimates from various mental health organizations state that ten percent of the population of individuals over the age of eighteen in the United States alone experiences the symptoms of depression and that one hundred and twenty one million people worldwide are affected by depression.

Children are also affected by depression as well and estimates are that approximately one out of every thirty three will develop depression either from genetics or a stressful environment. The prevalence of depression in women is higher than in men with statistics showing that twice as many women suffer from depression than men; however, the rate of suicide among men who suffer from major depression is three times higher than the suicide rate among women with this illness.

Depression also affects the elderly with over six million individuals over the age of sixty five having some form of depression and there is also an increased rate of suicidal tendencies and suicide among older depressed patients. Individuals who have other serious health problems such as cancer, eating disorders, and other debilitating diseases are also prone to developing depression.

Individuals who have major depression are also more susceptible to heart attacks and when suffering a heart attack the recovery time is often longer and the rate of fatality than a heart attack of individuals with depression is also higher. The "World Health Organization" or "WHO" estimates that by the year two thousand and twenty, depression will be the second most common illness in the World.

Depression is Treatable

The symptoms and severity of depression vary and are different in different individuals with some recognizing that there is a problem with the more serious symptoms and others that may just feel "blue" or unhappy most of the time without understanding why. Fortunately, for the majority of individuals who suffer from major depressive disorder this condition can be rapidly diagnosed by a primary care physician and successfully treated.

When receiving the proper treatment that typically consist of psychotherapy and antidepressant medications, sixty to eighty percent of individuals will experience a significant relief from their symptoms. In more severe cases of depression when therapy and medications do not help, "ECT" or "electroconvulsive therapy" can be beneficial to some sufferers. Through ongoing research, newer forms of treatment have also been recently made available for the treatment of major depression that has been unresponsive to the typical forms of treatment.

What Causes Snoring and How to Cure This Sleep Disorder?

Every night, I used to wake up after hearing a sound of road-roller on my bed. Yes, you guessed it right! My husband used to snore and snore as if there was no tomorrow. I was unaware of his snoring habit before marriage, otherwise, I would not have to hear his mind blasting snores. I am sure that there are many other ladies as well as gentlemen who feel exactly the same way as I did, because of their spouses, who use to drive a steam engine during sleep. I was so pissed off his habit that I decided to research on snoring. The following account would definitely give you all an idea about the intriguing world of Snoring:

What is snoring? Just after hearing this word, the very first thought that comes to mind is of the irritating sound that affects the sleep of not only the snorer but also of all the other people around him. However, its easiest definition “Snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures, namely uvula and soft palate, and the resulting sound, due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping”, may not be quite easy to understand. But it clearly refers to blockage in the throat, nasal passage or respiratory system which results in loud or soft but extremely unpleasant sounds.

Now the next question that comes to mind is “What causes snoring?”

Well! Basically it is caused by the irregular airflow due to blockage. However, the following are some of the chief snoring causes:

(1.) Nasal Problems: Nasal congestion or commonly known as obstruction/blockage of nasal passage make people snore

(2.) Dental problems: Misfit dentures or misproportionate jaws can also result in snoring

(3.) Sleep Apnea: It is related to the obstruction of airway by the throat tissues or due to Tonsils and affects breathing which results in the irritating sounds

(4.) Allergies can also play a vital role in snoring

(5.) Alcohol: Consumption of too much alcohol before sleeping also relaxes the throat muscles which could not defend the airway blockage and cause snoring.

(6.) Overweight: Excess of anything is bad and snoring is no different.

The above are the main causes of snoring. Hope you liked my research work!

There are also some of the easiest remedies to get rid of this highly condemned sleeping disorder.

The Health Effects of Cannabis – Informed Opinions

Enter any bar or public place and canvass opinions on cannabis and there will be a different opinion for each person canvassed. Some opinions will be well-informed from respectable sources while others will be just formed upon no basis at all. To be sure, research and conclusions based on the research is difficult given the long history of illegality. Nevertheless, there is a groundswell of opinion that cannabis is good and should be legalised. Many States in America and Australia have taken the path to legalise cannabis. Other countries are either following suit or considering options. So what is the position now? Is it good or not?

The National Academy of Sciences published a 487 page report this year (NAP Report) on the current state of evidence for the subject matter. Many government grants supported the work of the committee, an eminent collection of 16 professors. They were supported by 15 academic reviewers and some 700 relevant publications considered. Thus the report is seen as state of the art on medical as well as recreational use. This article draws heavily on this resource.

The term cannabis is used loosely here to represent cannabis and marijuana, the latter being sourced from a different part of the plant. More than 100 chemical compounds are found in cannabis, each potentially offering differing benefits or risk.

A person who is “stoned” on smoking cannabis might experience a euphoric state where time is irrelevant, music and colours take on a greater significance and the person might acquire the “nibblies”, wanting to eat sweet and fatty foods. This is often associated with impaired motor skills and perception. When high blood concentrations are achieved, paranoid thoughts, hallucinations and panic attacks may characterize his “trip”.

In the vernacular, cannabis is often characterized as “good shit” and “bad shit”, alluding to widespread contamination practice. The contaminants may come from soil quality (eg pesticides & heavy metals) or added subsequently. Sometimes particles of lead or tiny beads of glass augment the weight sold.

A random selection of therapeutic effects appears here in context of their evidence status. Some of the effects will be shown as beneficial, while others carry risk. Some effects are barely distinguished from the placebos of the research.

  • Cannabis in the treatment of epilepsy is inconclusive on account of insufficient evidence.
  • Nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy can be ameliorated by oral cannabis.
  • A reduction in the severity of pain in patients with chronic pain is a likely outcome for the use of cannabis.
  • Spasticity in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients was reported as improvements in symptoms.
  • Increase in appetite and decrease in weight loss in HIV/ADS patients has been shown in limited evidence.
  • According to limited evidence cannabis is ineffective in the treatment of glaucoma.
  • On the basis of limited evidence, cannabis is effective in the treatment of Tourette syndrome.
  • Post-traumatic disorder has been helped by cannabis in a single reported trial.
  • Limited statistical evidence points to better outcomes for traumatic brain injury.
  • There is insufficient evidence to claim that cannabis can help Parkinson’s disease.
  • Limited evidence dashed hopes that cannabis could help improve the symptoms of dementia sufferers.
  • Limited statistical evidence can be found to support an association between smoking cannabis and heart attack.
  • On the basis of limited evidence cannabis is ineffective to treat depression
  • The evidence for reduced risk of metabolic issues (diabetes etc) is limited and statistical.
  • Social anxiety disorders can be helped by cannabis, although the evidence is limited. Asthma and cannabis use is not well supported by the evidence either for or against.
  • Post-traumatic disorder has been helped by cannabis in a single reported trial.
  • A conclusion that cannabis can help schizophrenia sufferers cannot be supported or refuted on the basis of the limited nature of the evidence.
  • There is moderate evidence that better short-term sleep outcomes for disturbed sleep individuals.
  • Pregnancy and smoking cannabis are correlated with reduced birth weight of the infant.
  • The evidence for stroke caused by cannabis use is limited and statistical.
  • Addiction to cannabis and gateway issues are complex, taking into account many variables that are beyond the scope of this article. These issues are fully discussed in the NAP report.

The NAP report highlights the following findings on the issue of cancer:

  • The evidence suggests that smoking cannabis does not increase the risk for certain cancers (i.e., lung, head and neck) in adults.
  • There is modest evidence that cannabis use is associated with one subtype of testicular cancer.
  • There is minimal evidence that parental cannabis use during pregnancy is associated with greater cancer risk in offspring.

The NAP report highlights the following findings on the issue of respiratory diseases:

  • Smoking cannabis on a regular basis is associated with chronic cough and phlegm production.
  • Quitting cannabis smoking is likely to reduce chronic cough and phlegm production.
  • It is unclear whether cannabis use is associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, asthma, or worsened lung function.

The NAP report highlights the following findings on the issue of the human immune system:

  • There exists a paucity of data on the effects of cannabis or cannabinoid-based therapeutics on the human immune system.
  • There is insufficient data to draw overarching conclusions concerning the effects of cannabis smoke or cannabinoids on immune competence.
  • There is limited evidence to suggest that regular exposure to cannabis smoke may have anti-inflammatory activity.
  • There is insufficient evidence to support or refute a statistical association between cannabis or cannabinoid use and adverse effects on immune status in individuals with HIV.

The NAP report highlights the following findings on the issue of the increased risk of death or injury:

  • Cannabis use prior to driving increases the risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident.
  • In states where cannabis use is legal, there is increased risk of unintentional cannabis overdose injuries among children.
  • It is unclear whether and how cannabis use is associated with all-cause mortality or with occupational injury.

The NAP report highlights the following findings on the issue of cognitive performance and mental health:

  • Recent cannabis use impairs the performance in cognitive domains of learning, memory, and attention. Recent use may be defined as cannabis use within 24 hours of evaluation.
  • A limited number of studies suggest that there are impairments in cognitive domains of learning, memory, and attention in individuals who have stopped smoking cannabis.
  • Cannabis use during adolescence is related to impairments in subsequent academic achievement and education, employment and income, and social relationships and social roles.
  • Cannabis use is likely to increase the risk of developing schizophrenia and other psychoses; the higher the use, the greater the risk.
  • In individuals with schizophrenia and other psychoses, a history of cannabis use may be linked to better performance on learning and memory tasks.
  • Cannabis use does not appear to increase the likelihood of developing depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder.
  • For individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorders, near daily cannabis use may be linked to greater symptoms of bipolar disorder than for nonusers.
  • Heavy cannabis users are more likely to report thoughts of suicide than are nonusers.
  • Regular cannabis use is likely to increase the risk for developing social anxiety disorder.

It must be reasonably clear from the foregoing that cannabis is not the magic bullet for all health issues that some good-intentioned but ill-advised advocates of cannabis would have us believe. Yet the product offers much hope. Solid research can help to clarify the issues. The NAP report is a solid step in the right direction. Unfortunately, there are still many barriers to researching this amazing drug. In time the benefits and risks will be more fully understood. Confidence in the product will increase and many of the barriers, social and academic, will fall by the wayside.

Blood Pressure Lowering Drugs and Their Harmful Side Effects

I’m making this article to outline the four basic blood pressure lowering drugs doctors most commonly prescribe and their harmful side effects because…hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition which can’t be ignored. It is in fact a very life threatening silent killer where medication must be prescribed. Please keep in mind that prescription medication has many known harmful side effects hence natural remedies must be explored also.

If hypertension is not controlled, drugs must be prescribed. There are four major types of drugs prescribed to lower blood pressure: diuretics, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, and calcium channel blockers. Remember, these drugs are only masking one symptom of an unknown disease, they are anti-hypertensives and have no healing properties. Even the least toxic drugs can cause deadly side effects.

DIURETICS – This is the least toxic type of anti-hypertension drug treatment. They are basically dehydrators; removing fluid from your body by way of the kidneys. One might ask; why on earth do I want to dehydrate myself! what happens with the lost fluids containing many vital minerals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium, and getting rid of them will cause electrolyte imbalances (loss of minerals) in your body.

Other problems caused by diuretics include: irregular heart beat, gout, kidney damage or failure, uremia, hyperglycemia leading to diabetes, abnormal cholesterol, anemia, photosensitivity, indigestion, headaches, visual disturbances, and impotence.

Potent diuretic such as furosemide (Puresis, Aquarid, Lasix, Disal, Salix) or “water pills” causes thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency that can lead to heart failure. You should not take this diuretic without thiamine supplementation (250 mg twice daily).

ACE INHIBITORS – This type of drug sort of wages a chemical warfare attack in your body. They lower the blood pressure by blocking the release of angiotensin. Your body releases this molecule in order to raise the pressure.

Ace Inhibitors prevent the body from over producing the hormone present in lungs which makes the blood vessels contract and instead keeping them in a more relaxed state again the blood pressure is reduced. Their common side effect is dry cough. Examples are Zestril, Coversyl, Renitec, lispril etc.

BETA BLOCKERS – These are dangerous cardiac drug. They reduce the force of the heart’s contractions. Basically, the heartbeat slows in reaction to the drug, and that lowers hypertension. So keep in mind that you are dealing with a dangerous cardiac drug, not just “blood pressure medicine.”

Yep, you’ve got it; signs of serious heart disease would be one side effect. You may experience any or all of the following symptoms: congestive heart failure, which will lead to pulmonary edema, a good old-fashioned heart attack, or arrhythmias. And, of course, all of these irregularities can be fatal.

There’s also a strong possibility that you’ll experience a stroke, which could cause partial paralysis or death. And asthmatics should never take beta blockers, since they may trigger life-threatening airway spasms.

CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS – Calcium channel blockers are the worst of the blood lowering drugs available and guess what, they’re among the most widely prescribed drugs in the modern world. This drug block the movement of calcium across cell membranes. This suppresses muscular contraction, which dilates the arteries and reduces resistance to blood flow, hence a reduction in blood pressure.

Side effects in using these drugs include: increase in the number of headaches, a rash and increased blood flow to the skin resulting in feelings of flushing, an increased amount of fatigue and nausea; dizziness and some incidences of fluid retention i.e. puffy ankles. Examples of calcium channel blockers include: Isoptin, Calan, Herbessor, Norvasc, Sofvasc etc.

There you have it! The four basic blood pressure lowering drugs doctors most commonly prescribe and their harmful side effects. Hypertension is a very serious condition which can’t be ignored. It is in fact a very life threatening silent killer where medication must be prescribed. Please keep in mind that prescription medication has many known harmful side effects hence natural remedies must be explored also.

Type 2 Diabetes – Is The Metabolic Syndrome The Predictor of Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is viewed as being an aspect of what is called the metabolic syndrome. The condition is reasonably common and is characterized by insulin resistance and its related effects including…

  • high blood sugar,
  • high blood pressure,
  • high levels of triglycerides, and
  • obesity.

The good news is all of the above effects are very much controllable with a healthy diet plan, so it is not a condition you are going to have to live with for the rest of time. Type 2 diabetes and obesity are increasing in conjunction with incidences of the metabolic syndrome.

There are, however, some things you may not know about when it comes to the metabolic syndrome. Brushing up your knowledge will better help you treat this condition. Here is what you need to know…

Family History Is Important. First, know if your family members suffered from the metabolic syndrome as this does mean you will have a higher chance of also suffering. You will want to pay close attention to your diet plan if this is the case and make sure you are eating an appropriate amount for your body weight.

How You Wear Your Fat Matters. Also, keep in mind not all body fat is the same. If the fat is primarily around your legs and arms, this is going to be less problematic than if it is in your abdominal area. When fat is beneath the skin (so not skin deep) and is surrounding your organs, it has the potential to interfere with their functioning, so that is when it becomes a problem.

Visceral fat is much more dangerous than subcutaneous fat, so you do want to take this into account. If you have a very large waistline, you are going to be most at risk.

A Plant-Based Diet Can Help Cut Metabolic Syndrome. Keep in mind one of the best ways to slash your risk factor for the metabolic syndrome or at least curb some of the symptoms, is to consume a plant-based diet. As the name implies, it means feasting on more greens and fewer meats. While it is essential you get your protein in, eating copious amounts of meat does equate to raised cholesterol levels, which then leads to many of the problems mentioned above.

Losing Weight. You do not need to make significant changes to improve your lifestyle. Losing five to ten pounds can have a profound influence on your risk factor for the metabolic syndrome and control some of the symptoms you are seeing.

Modest weight loss adds up: it will pay off in time.

Exercise Is A Must. While diet is the most critical factor for controlling the metabolic syndrome, exercise is also going to play a crucial role. Any exercise or physical activity will go a long way towards helping you better manage your blood sugar and body weight.

Keep these points in mind. Do not take this condition lightly. It is easy to think it is not that big of a problem as often you do not notice symptoms. Don’t wait until you have suffered a heart attack or stroke.

None of this is pretty which is why it is crucial for you to eat healthily and exercise.

Play Mind Tricks With Yourself to Lift Depression

Since depression is all about thoughts and feelings you can use your mind to your advantage and trick yourself out of depression. While the drugs available to tackle depression have improved over the years a third of all depressed people find that anti-depressants have little or no effect on their symptoms.

However there are other alternatives to try when it comes to helping lift depression. Behavioral therapy is now thought to be just as effective if not more so, when it comes to dealing and overcoming depression. While the symptoms of depression are felt physically by way of feeling down, sad, blue, you cry more easily and your emotions are up and down, the solution is quite simple and all in the mind.

By playing mind tricks on yourself and getting your mind to change its way of thinking, you can lift yourself right out of depression. This does not of course mean that if you have been depressed and have been prescribed that medication you should ignore the advice of your Doctor and stop taking medication, but it is something that you can try alongside.

The simple answer is driving yourself into thinking more positive thoughts and feelings. For example there is usually a reason behind the depression. While this reason is not to be trivialized it can be overcome.

If your depression stems from being in debt for example and you can see no immediate way out of your situation then every time you think about your problem you feel worse. However think about it, sometimes through your day you may see the light and the depression lifts by way of something unexpected which grabs your attention. Even if this is only for a few brief seconds, for those seconds your mood lifts and suddenly the world does not seem like such a bad place after all.

For those brief seconds or minutes when your mind was distracted, while your problem was still there you put it to the back of your mind and let other thoughts and feelings take first place.

This is the key to tricking your mind, by consciously making it think other thoughts.

If you are severely depressed and nothing seems good in the world then visualization and imagination will do for now. This of course will not be easy at first, but with perseverance and a little optimism it will gradually change your pattern of thought. Visualize changes in your life for the better and see yourself as escaping from the symptoms of depression and being the person that you want to be.

Be attentive to your thoughts and feelings and when you realize you have let yourself drift back into your old ways, turn to your new thoughts again. The more detail you can visualize the more real it will seem and the easier it will be to break from your depression.

You might think that this is only escaping from your problem, because after all, the problem that caused the depression in the first place is still there. That's true, but while the problem is still there you are able to see it in a new light.

Once you have felt what it feels like to feel happy again you are then able to think not about your depression and how stuck you are but how you can deal with the problem. So play mind tricks with yourself, after your mind has been driving you into depression for so long, its time to get your own back.

Are You Living With a Phobia and Feel That It Will Be With You Forever?

According to Wikipedia “a phobia is a type of anxiety disorder, usually defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer commits to great lengths in avoiding, typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational“.

There are a number of common phobias such as closed-in places, heights, driving, flying, insects, snakes, and needles. Having said that, there is a long list of phobias that show us that we can be afraid of almost anything. Often phobias develop in childhood, but they can also develop later in life.

Generally, people with phobias realize that the phobia is irrational, but can’t control that feeling of being afraid. Just thinking about the feared object or situation may make the person feel anxious, the heart beat goes up, they feel dizzy, uncomfortable, want to cry or feel faint. When being exposed to the stimulus that causes the phobia, people feel overwhelmed and have a sense of terror.

The feeling is so terrible that one can go to great lengths to avoid it, often inconvenience one self or change a lifestyle. Craig, who suffered from claustrophobia, for example, didn’t want to fly in an airplane and couldn’t visit his daughter who lived in England. He hadn’t seen her for a number of years and now she was getting married. His phobia was so strong that he couldn’t get himself to book a ticket to go and see her. “I used to be able to fly. My wife had to stand outside the toilet door in the plane, as I felt so anxious in this confined space that I couldn’t close the door. This feeling of not wanting to fly got worse and worse and I decided not to fly any more. I realized I had to do something about this when my daughter wanted to get married. I decided that this phobia wouldn’t ruin my daughter’s wedding day.”

Understanding the phobia is the first step to overcoming it and getting help.

There is a difference between having fear in a situation that is dangerous and having fear without actually being in danger. Fear is a normal response that can either protect or hinder us in life. If we are in a dangerous situation it serves as a protective purpose, activating the automatic “fight-or-flight” response. With our bodies and minds alert and ready for action, we are able to respond quickly, in a more narrowly focused way and have a chance to protect ourselves.

However, in case of phobias the threat is greatly exaggerated or even non-existent. For example, it is only natural to be afraid of a big, aggressive looking dog in front of you, but it is not so rational to be terrified of a friendly poodle on a leash, as you might be if you have a phobia of dogs.

There are different signs to look out for when determining if you have a phobia:

Physical signs and symptoms

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fast heart
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Sweating or feeling cold
  • Tingling sensation
  • Feeling dizzy

Emotional signs and symptoms

  • Feeling overwhelmed, anxious or panicky
  • Needing to escape
  • Know that the feeling is not logic
  • Feeling as if you are dying
  • Feeling out of control and powerless
  • Feeling “unreal” or detached from yourself

It’s important to know that phobias are common and that many people suffer from different phobias. Having a phobia doesn’t mean that you have to live with it for the rest of your life! It is nice to know that phobias are highly treatable and often clients only have to come for three to four sessions to overcome the phobia.

Lynn who had a phobia of holes (trypophobia) explained that she has had a phobia of insects as a child and developed this “new” phobia in the last years. She wasn’t able to look at honeycombs, dried flowers with holes, anthills or any other objects that have holes. Often she wasn’t able to go out into nature or even go on Facebook as she was scared to come across an “unsightly looking object”. “I thought I would never overcome my phobias. It just seemed too hard. My heart started racing, I felt faint and just wanted to run away when seeing something with holes. I felt ashamed and debilitated of my reactions as others couldn’t understand it. “

Lynn and Craig decided to give hypnotherapy a try. After explaining their feelings and reactions in detail, they were hypnotized and shown that they were able to overcome their fears in a gentle way. Hypnotherapy, together with slow desensitization techniques helped them to overcome their fears quickly and effectively. Each one only needed four sessions and they were “phobia free”.

” I was able to fly and see my daughter in the UK. It was amazing to be able to use the toilet in the plane on my own. My wife didn’t have to stand in front of the door once. When we were overseas we even went on an over-night boat trip where we had to sleep in a small room on the ship. I managed everything perfectly fine. I cannot believe that I lived with this phobia for so long and never did anything about it” Craig said in one of his follow up sessions.

Lynn is overjoyed that she is not scared to go out into nature or visit other people as she does not have to fear coming across unsightly objects any more. “I feel free, I stay in control in any given situation and don’t have to worry about going out or surfing net. I learned that one can overcome anxiety or fear, no matter how out of control it feels.”

Remember, it is fairly easy to treat phobias. There are a number of different therapies that you can choose from- so don’t let your phobia rule your life! Make the first step and join many of my clients who are now leading a happy, in control and calm life.

Type 2 Diabetes and Healthy Living – Get Serious About Your Health

It may not be easy to deal with knowing you are creating excuses for not doing what you should. In all likelihood, you know you should be cooking most of your meals. You know you should not be snacking at your work desk. You know you should be exercising in the morning or the evening. The litter especially may bother you, because you are given two opportunities a day to exercise, before or after work, and you have been skipping it over and over again.

It is true there are other responsibilities to manage. Some people are regularly active, they seem to have more spare time than you. If you had the same amount of time to spare, you would do the same, you may tell yourself. Whether you would or not is irrelevant. What is important is you are given the same number of hours per week as any other individual. If any of your peers are going for walks in the evening, a quick session at the gym in the morning, or a home workout when there are only 20 minutes to spare, what is your excuse?

When you look at this from the perspective of week after week, you should be exercising at least a few times. You should have time to cook – even if it 'is just once a week where you prepare large portions and freeze them. Moreover, no matter what, you have time to eat well because suggesting you do not just do not make sense.

If your health is satisfactory, or you are dealing with a health issue such as Type 2 diabetes, you need to get serious about your health. You need to take your goals, plans, and efforts seriously. There is nothing that warrants a dangerous mindset and approach more than your health. Once your body begins to degrade, you will start to realize you might have taken your well-being for granted. If this has already happened – sometimes through the development of high blood sugar levels or a high blood pressure reading – you need to get serious about the changes you intend on making. You need to act and act well because the consequences are grim.

Do not make excuses any longer. Stop postponing what you should have started yesterday, months ago, or a few years back. We promise you it will be worth it. The effort, time, and struggle you will need to overcome will lead to rewarding outcomes. Get serious about your health, and your life, because your ability to live well depends on the quality of your well-being.

The Playstation Generation – Combating Childhood Obesity

"It's not cool to be fat!"

America's youth are starting to become Willy Wonka's Umpa Lumpas. The obesity epidemic is especially evident in United States, where many people live sedentary lives and eat more convenience foods, which are typically high in calories and low in nutritional value. Children, on average, spend up to five to six hours a day involved in these sedentary activities. Perhaps it would not matter if they were insufficiently active at other times, but most of them are not. In just two decades, the prevalence of overweight doubled for US children ages 6 to 11 – and tripled for American teenagers. The annual National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that about one-third of US children are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. In total, about 25 million US children and adolescents are overweight or nearly overweight. This generation will now be the first generation to die before their parents if they are not careful. More and more reports are being published stating that American youth are obese. Childhood obesity is particularly troublesome because the extra pounds often start kids on the path to health problems that were once confined to adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The major health threat is the early development of Type 2 diabetes (adult onset), particularly in children with a family history of the disease. Doctors are reporting a surge in young adolescents developing Type 2 diabetes – which can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, stroke, limb amputations, and blindness. People who develop diabetes in adolescence face a diminished quality of life and shortened life span, particularly if the disease progresses untreated. It's a scary prospect for our children but, in many cases, obesity and diabetes are preventable.

If a weight-loss program is necessary, involve the whole family in healthy habits so your child does not feel singled out. You can encourage healthy eating by serving more fruits and vegetables and buying fewer sodas and high-calorie, high-fat snack foods. Physical activity can also help your child overcome obesity or being overweight. Kids need about 60 minutes each day. Obese children need to learn to listen to their internal cues of hunger and appetite. Parents and childcare providers must help them do so. This includes encouraging children to eat according to these cues, while acknowledging the emotional aspect of feeding and eating. A restrictive diet may make the child feel deprived and neglected, and exacerbate the overeating problem.

Maintain weight. A goal of weight maintenance versus weight loss depends on age, baseline BMI percentile, and whether the child has any medical complications because of obesity (such as hypertension and high cholesterol).

Encourage physical activity. Children should take part in at least 60 minutes of age- and developmentally-specific activities every day. Activity periods should last 10 to 15 minutes or more and include a range of intensities (moderate to vivid). Children should engage in a variety of physical activities of various levels of intensity.

For best success, all family members should participate in the increased activity. Physically active parents and siblings serve as role models. They also provide good company for bike rides, walks or swims. Physical activity should be fun and make children feel good, not a chore they must do to lose weight.

The Centers for Disease Control have recommended that schools establish policies that promote enjoyable, lifelong physical activity among young people. Their guidelines state, "Physical education should emphasize skills for lifetimes physical activities (eg, dance, strength training, and jogging, swimming, bicycling, cross-country skiing, walking, and hiking) rather than those for competitive sports." These experts also recommend that fitness-enhancing physical activities become an integral part of the American family's lifestyle.

High Quality Trophies Tips

What trophies are good quality trophies? Nowadays many clubs and associations leave behind the resin (plastic molded) figurines, and look to buy from the large amount of glass and crystal rewards that are now available and very affordable. Clubs and associations seem to want the most for their "buck", and in this very competitive industry, those offering lower quality products will lose you to the competition.

You can get some very good resin trophies, however these tend to be used for the larger in quantity "token" trophies, that clubs give to everyone who takes part in a particular competition.

Weight is as important as size when choosing a trophy product, also the actual detail of any artwork, or molding. There are some very good quality, well made resin trophies, nicely weighted, and these will always sell ahead of lightweight items that are not manufactured to the same level of quality.
So here are the golden rules:

1. Make sure the artwork detail is clear and precise. Engraving should be accurate, and of high quality.

2. There should be a decent weight to the product. Lightweight products are usually hollow and do not feel as good when presented to their recipient.

3. If you are being offered resin trophies think can you get crystal or glass for a similar price. Crystal and glass reflect light well and will look more attractive on a presentation evening. Many crystal awards come with a free presentation box nowdays.

Remember there is a lot of choice out there so so do not be afraid to push for what you want. This is the same when buying any product of course. But remember a lot of times people will be trying to clear out Trophy products that have not sold well, and are cheap, but they are cheap for a very good reason.

Something you could ask yourself is. "Would I be impressed if I was awarded this product?" If you are honest then you will usually avoid purchasing products that are not going to be as good a value for money as alternative trophies and awards.

You are spending the money. A lot of the time it is going to be a consider sum of money too. There are clubs that spend thousands on their trophies, yet do not even check on what products are being delivered to them till the actual day of the presentations. Surely it is better to make sure that you are buying the right trophies for your function before the work is done and they have been delivered. You can not complain if you have allowed a supplier to choose your products for you, allowed them to complete the work, then deliver them to you. Trophy providers are no more psychic than you are.

So remember the golden rules, and also that you are spending a lot of money, to award individuals for making something special. Make sure that you get the best value for that money by buying the best quality trophies and awards. The Trophies you buy, should be ones that you would be proud to take home if you were being presented with them.

Bio Hazard Issues For The Collector

Of course it depends on what you collect. If rocks and minerals are your thing, you can stop reading now. But what if you collect first edition comic books, or antique doll clothes, or sugar packets? You had best be giving some thought to repellent little crawly things as well as things that don’t so much crawl as sort of land on your stuff and reproduce like mad -eating all the while. I must stress, that my advice is rather generic and pragmatic. The chances are that a little research into your specific collectible will provide you with more and perhaps more specifically useful information then you will find here. Also, you might do well to research your specific local for the threats that come with the territory.

To being with the smallest of threats, (this is to say it’s a significant threat, but you’d need a microscope to see it), -let’s consider mildew. Mildew is a plant -a fungus actually -like mushrooms. It’s like the yeast that makes bread raise and makes less interesting stuff into beer and wine. Not to put too fine a point on it, it’s also the stuff that grown between you toes if you hang out at disreputable swimming pools. (BTW -Did’ja know that what we think of mushrooms are actually only the sexual part of mass of cell that live in the dirt and may be a ball as much as 10 feet in diameter?) To understand mildew, you need to know that it needs moisture -just like plants and other living things. So the obvious way to protect your collectibles from mildew damage is to keep them dry. When you are done with this article -read up on DESICCANTS -things that suck moisture out of the air. This is perhaps obvious, but what is not so obvious is that dirt also helps mildew get a foothold.*

If you collect -let us say- doll clothes, you ought to clean them. If you collect them brand-new -this might not be a problem, but then again…. Turns out that the really elaborate doll clothes are often treated with starch &/or other chemicals that not only nourish mildew -but appeal to some of the larger things like silverfish. So this is why I say keep ’em dry and -if possible- keep ’em clean.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that if your collection is not made out of cloth, you are safe! Paper, leather & fur, dried flowers, plants & seeds, stuffed animals, (deer heads & such -not just teddy bears), wood, wicker, photographs, painted surfaces, and a million other things will all support mildew. Think of it this way -if nature made it, or it’s made out of something that nature made -nature also made something that eats it! This is a good thing. Some scientist once figured out that is it weren’t for the ubiquitous little beetle that eats hair -the planet would be about 3 feet deep in hair now. If you have ever shared a home with a good sized dog that sheds -this is not a hard thing to imagine. We will come to the hair-eating bugs shortly.

Silverfish & Firebrats:
These repellent little insect have been around for 300 million years -cockroaches, for example -only 50 million. (People -in their current style and model -considerably less then a million.) The very shape of their bodies has a primitive look about them. Firebrats like it hotter then silverfish, and are darker in color, but you deal with both the same way. They are a little like mildew in that they need water -but unlike mildew -they can go over there to get water and then wonder back over here to eat your stuff, so the problem is a little more complicated. They also have a slightly more selective diet then mildew -they like starch and starch is what things are glued together with -things like books and wallpaper. Here again -the list of things with starch in them goes on and on. Older things were much more likely to be glued together with starch glue or paste then modern things that are glued with modern -unappetizing- glues. As to dealing with these bugs, you need to take a more holistic approach because of their ability to wonder around to get a drink and what-not. There are a variety of commercial bug sprays that can deal with an infestation well enough and it is likely that a given geographic area will have it’s favorite poison.

There are also a couple of ‘folk-remedies’ that might be worth trying and that don’t involve harmful poisons. One is to mix borax and flour and leave it out. The bugs sort of over-doses on the flour, the borax bubbles up, and the little f___ers pop!??! I can’t say if this approach works or not -but it’s fun to imagine repellent little insects moaning “I can’t believe I ate that whole thing” and then exploding. Supposed to work on cockroaches too. Kind of like leaving a dish of beer out in the garden to attract snails. Then you are to dispose of drunk snails? How To Get Rid of sez “Infested books can be sealed in a plastic bag along with some desiccant and placed inside of the freezer for three days to kill any resident silverfish and firebrats. If your book case has become infested, consider spreading some diatomaceous earth behind the books on the shelves to keep the moisture levels down and kill any paper-eating insects that may be hiding out.” Here we see moisture as an issue once again.

Moths and Hair-eating Beetles:
Turns out that it’s not the moth that actually eats wool. It’s the larval stage -ugly little bugs. But the moths lay eggs so you need to be aware of both. And it also turns out that they eat wool, fur (and what is wool but sheep fur after?) and feathers. But they don’t care for cotton, silk or any synthetic fibers. Silk I understand I suppose -silk has already gone through a bug and emerged as its cocoon, but they don’t care for cotton? -but they eat feathers? Feathers? Not for me to say I guess. So how to keep them out of your collection? By now you may have guessed that keeping things dry is a good first step. I have no idea what the little bugs find to drink while eating your woolen stuff, but they don’t do well at all with the relative humidity less then 30%. They also need certain minerals to survive. Human sweat is a wonderful source of these minerals so -SURPRISE!- put things away CLEAN. (And remember that dirt and salt are also hydro-scopic. This means that they absorb water from the air so you will not only be giving the repellent bugs a vitamin boost, but a nice drink of water if you put your collectibles away dirty.

What about mothballs and the like? These chemicals -and there are two main ones -moth flakes and moth-balls -each a different chemical -are ordinarily repellents but can act as poison if the concentrations are high enough. Once they have evaporated, the game starts a-new. Unless you have your collection sealed up very well indeed, you may find that you have a moth problem all over again -despite the fact that you used moth stuff and kept things closed up. One species of wool eater can crawl through a hole less then 1 mm wide. You must also read the instructions on the box this stuff comes in. They can dissolve certain plastics -like the plastic used to make big boxes to store winter clothes ?!?! In humid conditions, they can also stain fabrics, so put the balls / flakes in a paper folder or envelope. Once the balls or flakes evaporate, the gas can go through almost anything. Like the silverfish above, you can freeze hair-eaters in any stage of their development. Let them become acclimatized to a nice warm place in your house, them pop them in the freezer (set at the coldest setting) for 72 hours and the problem is solved. Till another moth flits by and lays her eggs anyway.

Timothy Porter has this to add: “Another product that is a very inexpensive and effective desiccant is diatomaceous earth. This is the same filter powder used in in-ground swimming pools. Made of diatoms, microscopic fossils of ancient sea life, it not only is a great moisture absorbent, but also, because it does not bio-degrade any further than its present state, it irritates and damages the chitinous exoskeletons of all manner of insects, rendering them unable to maintain the necessary internal moisture to survive. DE is commonly used in orchards, spread on the ground, to kill off the nymph stages of most herbivorous insects and to dry out slugs and snails. The Colorado State University has a great article on this subject. It’s rather pointed at Colorado and other dry climates, but check out Clothes Moths: Identification and Control in the Home []

*I once had a sailboat that spent the winter on the water and was closed up and damp. There was a nice clean towel that got left behind and got wet -but didn’t have a spec of mildew on it. There was also a vinyl notebook holding instructions and warranties etc. This grew mildew. Not the paper -but the vinyl! Plastic is not supposed to be nutritious to anything I thought, but you could see my hand-prints growing mildew very clearly. Evidently I had been doing something with dirty hands and handling the notebook and the dirt on my hands that stuck to the vinyl was all it took to get mildew started.

Allergic Reaction to Allergy Shots

Although there is no cure for allergies, many people have found immunotherapy (more commonly known as allergy shots) to be an extremely effective way to manage irritating symptoms. Allergy shots are usually discussed as an option for people who have not been able to control their allergies with other methods, people who are not able to avoid the cause of their allergies, and people who have experienced unpleasant side effects from other types of allergy medication .

During an allergic reaction, the immune system overreacts to a normally harmless substance. Allergy shots work by exposing the system to small amounts of the problem allergen until the body can effectively build up natural defenses against it. They are administrated over a given period of time. The number of injections will depend on the severity and type of the allergy. Immunotherapy is usually very effective and can help to drastically reduce allergy symptoms. Normally, allergy shots are very safe. Exposure to the allergen is minimal, and should not be enough to trigger a problem. However, it is possible for them to cause an allergic reaction. They should only be administered by trained medical professionals in a safe environment to avoid any possible complications.

What to expect from an allergy shot

It is fairly common for patients to experience a small amount of boiling or discomfort at or near the injection site. This may occur immediately after the shot, or may not appear until a few hours later. This is usually a harmless reaction that should go away within 24 hours.

Occidentally, the shots will trigger the very sorts of allergic reactions that they are meant to get rid of. Exposure to a known allergen is always risky, and it may be necessary to adjust the dosage if reactions occasion. These reactions will have the same types of symptoms as a regular reaction to the allergen. For example, someone who is taking the shots to manage an allergy to dogs may experience the same symptoms that they normally would after coming into contact with pet dander. These are usually minor reactions, and may include:

  • Sneezing, difficulty breathing, a runny nose, or an itchy rash (especially at the injection site)

These symptoms will usually disappear fairly quickly. However, most allergists agree that it is a good idea to monitor patients for up to 30 minutes after an allergy shot just to make sure.

In very rare cases, allergy shots can trigger a serious reaction called anaphylaxis.

Serious Allergic Reactions to Immunotherapy

During anaphylaxis, the respiratory system will show signs of great distress. Some signs of anaphylaxis are a serious constriction of the airways, swelling and tightening of the throat, serious difficulty breathing, or a rapid pulse. Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening condition, so it is essential to seek emergency medical attention right away at the first sign of any of these symptoms.

Take the Right Precautions

It is never safe to risk exposure to a known allergen without proper precautions. Since there is a slight risk of an allergic reaction to immunotherapy, it is important that these shots are only administrated by a trained medical professional in a safe environment. Do not leave the doctor's office until all symptoms, even minor ones, have faded.

4 Cool Ways to Deal With the Depression Associated With a Mesothelioma Suit

A mesothelioma suit can throw many obstacles the way of a mesothelioma patient and that can make him get depressed: lawyers of the defendant(s) may drag the suit because they know that people suffering from mesothelioma have a short life expectancy.

If you are in such a situation, here are a few things you can do to handle your depression.

1. Think The Worst, And Then The Best

I suffer from depression myself because I am living with a very embarrassing disease which makes people tease, mock, and ridicule me. That makes a lot of negative thoughts to come into my head and I get depressed.

To battle the negative thoughts that come into my mind often, I imagine the worst happening. Then, I also think about the best that can happen. When I do that, I lose my fear of those negative thoughts, they lose their hold over my mind, and I start to feel hopeful again.

2. Exercise Regularly

According to the Harvard Medical School, exercising at a low intensity over a period of time, for at least six weeks, is a great tool one can use to deal with depression.

When a man or a woman exercises, certain proteins known as neurotrophic factors are released into the body. These neurotrophic factors cause new brain cells to grow. The development of the brain cells and subsequent connections they make in the brain makes the brain function better and the improved performance of the brain can make one feel better.

According to Oncologists, brisk walking, low intensity weight training and yoga exercises are exercises that mesothelioma patients can do without suffering any adverse effects and you may consider doing these exercises.

3. Read Your Bible And Affirm Some Of The Verses

This is another thing I do when negative thoughts crowd into my mind. When I read God’s word and I repeat some of the verses, I feel strengthened emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually and that reduces the number of negative thoughts that come into my mind. As I continue saying Bible verses to myself, I become more positive and I feel happier.

Therefore, make it a habit to read your Bible every day. It is the most motivational book on Earth-it is filled with many wonderful promises of God which can inspire you and lift your spirit when you are down.

You might want to start by reading and committing to memory Isaiah 41 v 10. In that verse, God is telling you that no matter how bad your situation is, no matter how lonely you are, no matter how badly men have disappointed you, if you are experiencing pain and suffering because of the mesothelioma suit, He is with you although you may not feel His presence and He will help you if you have faith in Him.

So, quote the verse to yourself whenever negative thoughts come into your mind. Every time a bad thought slips into your mind, quote it loudly. Keep saying it until it fills your mind the bad thought leaves your mind.

As you keep practicing this habit, as you keep using Bible verses to fight negative thoughts, you will gain better control over your mind, you can make your mindset positive and that will give you hope and help you to feel hopeful about life.

4. Pray Often

Prayer is another strategy you can use to battle depression. I pray myself and when I roll my cares and burdens onto the LORD, I experience peace because I know that the God who helped me yesterday and who takes care of the birds who eat although they do not sow or reap, will help me to take care of my needs.

So, every day, say a prayer such as this one, “Dear LORD, glory be to Your holy Name for Your kindness. I give You glory for giving me life to enjoy the wonders of the earth You created. LORD, I feel sad because of all the obstacles that are delaying the release of my compensation. I worry about getting the money early enough so that I can take care of the medical bills. Please love me. Please let me know that You are with me and You still care about me. Please remind me that there is still hope for me. Please touch the hearts of the lawyer of the defendant and the judge who is adjudicating the case and let me get my money quickly. Amen.”

To deal with the depression associated with a mesothelioma suit, battle negative thoughts, ensure that you are active all the time, let God talk to you, and talk to God often and you will feel fine.

How to Get Over Your Fear of Driving Alone

When you're learning to drive, there's always someone else in the car that you can turn to and who will give you helpful advice. But as soon as you've passed your test, you're allowed to drive alone. Most people are happy with that idea but for some people – either soon after they've passed their test or later in life due to some other event – the very idea of driving unaccompanied fills them with dread.

If you're one of those affected, check out these ideas to help reduce your fear.

Turn on the radio

Some shows – especially talk radio – are designed as though they're almost a two way conversation between the host and the listener.

Doing something as simple as tuning the radio to a talk show could make the difference and could help fool your brain into thinking there's someone else in the car.

Or, if you prefer, you could always find a channel with a good selection of music or put in a CD or play something via your phone or MP3 player.

Those are all equally good alternatives and will help take your mind off the fact that you're the only person in the vehicle.

Try short journeys first

Without it's unavoidable, it's best to start with shorter journeys as the first ones where you drive solo.

You should be able to convince yourself that the journey will only take a few minutes so it will be over with almost as soon as it's started.

Gradually build up to longer journeys as your confidence increases.

If you're really nervous, start by just driving to the end of the road and back – maybe with someone from your family watching from a distance. The thought that someone is there, watching, may be all that you need to help you get over your fear of driving alone.

Choose your roads carefully

You probably know the different routes you can take for your journey.

Pick roads that you've driven along before so that you're in familiar territory.

Ideally, pick roads that are not too quiet (otherwise your mind will turn to those scary movies you've seen) but even are not too busy. Some of the problem with driving alone is that you're running all sorts of thought patterns that contribute to your fear.

Choosing roads that are "just right" in terms of traffic will help a lot.

Choosing the time of day – if you have that luxury – will help even more as you can decide when the best traffic times will be.

And if your route includes traffic lights, that's probably for the better. They help control the bigger junctions and mean that you're not turning into big swathes of traffic.

Practice relaxation

Relaxation is a big part of overcoming any fear or phobia.

Your fear has helped make you tende and probably nervous.

Learning to relax more will help overcome that side of things.

Anything that takes your fancy is a good idea – hypnosis, meditation, yoga, deep breathing. They all work to help you remember how to relax.

Although it should go without saying that most (if not all) of those techniques should not be used while you're in control of a vehicle!
