So, if you begin to feel an unsettling feeling in your stomach, glance somewhere else in the room. Take your eyes off of the thing that is making you feel uncomfortable.

5. Practice words and phrases that make you stutter. Have you ever heard the saying, "Practice makes perfect"? Well, practice may not stop you from stammering all the time, but it could help you pronounce a word without stuttering. Put emphasis on the words you stammer over repeatedly.

6. Take a break and do something else. It is fine if you need to excuse yourself from a situation making you stammer. Go to a quiet place, and think about what you want to say when you return. Picture yourself having a good conversation without any stammering moments.

7. Convince yourself you can do it. You have nothing to be accused of when you stammer. So, take pride that you are trying to improve the way you speech. Convince yourself you can go out there, and speak fluently without any stuttering breaks.

8. Change the words if you get stuck. Do not continue to struggle just to say a word. Pick a word you do not have problems saying, and use it instead of the word you were struggling with.

9. Listen to other people. Observe phrases and dialects of other people. Learn new words to add to your vocabulary. Take notice to what other people do when they are talking. Incorporate one or two things into your way of speaking to see if it helps you.

Brain injury: if the patient is unconscious and snoring this is a serious sign. There will usually be bleeding from the mouth, nose, or ears.

Nasal Polyps: polyps are soft, moist, grape-like growths hanging on stem in the mucous membrane of the nose. The cause is usually an allergy. Symptoms are obstruction, excessive nasal discharge, loss of smell, headache, occasional snoring.

Adenoiditis: the adenoids situate in the back of the pharynx, near the nasal passages at the Eustachian tube. Extreme infection of the adenoids can cause otitis media, fluid collections in the middle ear, and hearing loss. Primary symptoms are breathing through the mouth, nasal speech, lowered mental ability. Antibiotics will lend mild infections. Drinking or eating anything cold (ice cream) can bring about some relief. Repeated infections may indicate surgery. Gargling is useless.

Stroke: Snoring reflects severity of the stroke if the patient is in coma.

Uric acid

Gout is technically a form of arthritis, in that it attacks the joints of the body. While it may appear in the ankles or knees, the majority of gout cases occur in the toes – and almost always in the big toe.

Gout occurs when there is too much uric acid in the body and this acid forms large crystals which then get stuck in the joints. It can be quite painful, sometimes leaving a person unable to walk.

Uric acid is formed as a waste product when the body digests foods containing a substance known as prurine. Usually, the uric acid leaves the body through urination – but if there is too much uric acid, it gets into the bloodstream and there can form the nasty crystals.

Prurine is found in many foods, including red meat, beer, dried beans, organ meats, and some kinds of seafood. Consuming too much of these may cause uric acid to build up, but some people have a genetic predisposition toward developing uric acid. Pother people may have medical conditions, such as diabetes, or lifestyle issues, such as obesity, which can also increase the risk of developing gout.

Gout and penis function

So how does a problem in the big toe potentially affect penis function? It has to do with blood vessels.

The lining of blood vessels is called endothelium, and the stronger the endothelium, the stronger the blood vessel. 3 Biodiesel Titrations

Once you have your titration solution ready, it's now time to start doing the titration. Remember on the board we explained how to do it. We're basically going to take a known amount of the base solution. This is our 1. percent base solution, and I'm gonna pour some of this out into a little cup. It's important that you never draw any of this with a syringe because it can contaminate this. That's always why I put a little bit in a little cup. Seal it right back up, and that way I have a vessel for doing it. Now, I also have isopropyl alcohol, this is 91%, and I'm gonna put this in a vessel as well so that I do not contaminate it either. To do a titration you have a sample of oil that you do not know the acidity of, and you're gonna get a syringe and you're gonna suck up 1 milliliter of oil. These have milliliter marks on the side. These are kind of a handy little set of syringes. They actually say oil, alcohol, and titration solution. If you'd like these I carry them on my site as well at utahbio, but any syringe will do, but I just like it so I do not mess up my syringes. I'm gonna suck up a milliliter of oil. I usually go a over and then I come back down. I'm gonna move it, I have a bubble on top that I want to get rid of. I'm gonna squirt down till I get to a milliliter of oil. I've got a milliliter of oil there. Before I put that into my solution here I'm going to put 10 milliliters of isopropyl alcohol in here. Now these actually have handy measurements on the side, so I can actually do it that way, but if you do not you can suck up ten milliliters with a syringe, and get rid of your bubble. This is somewhat of a messy process so you want to wear gloves. You'll notice that I have a little bit of oil and stuff around. There's just no clean way to do biodiesel. I have yet to meet anyone who has. Buy some kitty litter if you want to make sure things are clean as the oil dries.

Kay, so I'm gonna put ten milliliters of isopropyl alcohol into my jar here, and I'm gonna spray a milliliter of oil into this mixture. Now let the camera get up and kinda look at that real close. Now you'll notice that is not really well mixed, and that's because oil and water do not like each other, so we're gonna have to mix this up here. We'll stir this here for a second. If you'd like you can heat the mixture a little bit. You do not want to heat it too much 'cause you do not want to boil of your alcohol, but I've heard of some people heating the oil in the microwave in a little tiny dish before they use it. Our goal was just to basically get it to be one solution as you see here. To this mixture, we're now gonna add about 3 or 4 drops of our phenolphalene. Again this is just a PH indicator, it's nothing more than that. It's not really important how many drops you need to put in here 'cause all this is doing is indicating PH.

Kay, so I'm gonna mix this up. Now what I'm gonna do is very slowly suck up some titration solution. I've got ten milliliters of titration solution in this syringe. I'm using a little stirrer and I'm just gonna start stirring this in. So I started with ten. I'm basically just looking for this to change colors. I do not know if you can see that real well. Let me see if I can get you a closer view. As I put this in it is literally starting to change color drop by drop. You see that pink that's occurring? Let's see if I can do it a little differently here. That pink is my indicator solution. What's going on is I've gotten a basic solution, I've got an unknown amount of acid, and it's starting to neutralize that acid and taking the pH up over. How do you know when you're done is when that turns pink and stays pink for about 30 seconds. There we're starting to come into it. There we're a nice pink. Just a little bit more to be sure, and then we'll sit and let that go for about 30 seconds. After 30 seconds if it is still that color, then we're gonna write that number down. I'm gonna let this sit here while we look at our math. We started with ten milliliters, and we're now at seven, so 8,9,10 that's three, it took 3 milliliters of our titration solution to neutralize this acid in our oil. You'll notice we're staying this nice beautiful pink which is what we're after there. A lot of times when you're doing a titration it's important to do it about three times to make sure that you've done it right. So we're gonna do it, I'm gonna show you how to do it again one more time. 'cause we kind of slopped around and made a little bit of a mess. You just want to make sure you always redo it, double-check your math. If after three times your number are plus or minus one, that's your number. Average them out and that's gonna be your titration number. So we'll go ahead and pause here for a moment and we'll get another one set up.

Kay, we've done our first titration and we got three so we're gonna do another one. Again, one milliliter of oil. So I've got one milliliter of oil. Set that here. I'm gonna put ten milliliters of alcohol. Get that bubble out of the way. Ten milliliters of isopropyl alcohol into a container. One milliliter of oil. A couple of drops of my titrating solution. Again this is phenolphalene, phenol red, or tumeric will work just fine. It also does not matter how much of this I put in because it's just my indicator solution. Now I'm gonna mix this up and get a really uniform batch of oil, alcohol and the indicator solution, and then using my titration solution, remember known amount of base, unknown amount of acid, in we go. We'll move these out of the way so we get a little better view here. Slowly I'm just gonna start adding known amounts of base, starting at ten. We'll swirl it around, it already started to turn a little bit pink which is what we want. There's some pink and back to yellow, so we need a little bit more. Swirl it around. Oh, it's getting there. Notice, it's staying this good, nice pink color. Maybe just a little bit more. Okay here, so I've got that beautiful pink color. Phenol red turns sort of a reddish color. Tumric turns kind of a pinkish color. This is phenolphalene you can see that it's something of a pink color, but your goal is just to hit that color and make it stay for about 30 seconds. Again, what that means is I've had an unknown amount of acid in the oil, a known amount of base that we add to it until we knock that pH, until we've neutralized it. This took, this is sitting at six this time. So we're really close. We'll do one more and then we'll average everything together, then we'll show you how much you're gonna need to make a batch.

Kay, we'll do our third and final titration. Again, we're gonna do ten milliliters of alcohol. We'll drop some indicator solution, one milliliter of oil, put it in, mix it up, and then we're gonna slowly add in our titration solution. We're gonna watch for the color change. Mix it around, it's starting to turn. It's getting there, and we changed. I'm at six, so I know, add a little bit more just to keep it there. So my first one was seven, my second was six, and my third one is about six and a quarter, so I'm gonna call this about six grams, or six milliliters extra. So what our titration would be, or how much we would add to our biodiesel that we're gonna make, we're gonna take 7.5 + 4 so about 12 grams we will add per liter of oil. So if we had 100 liters of oil we would add 1,200 grams of catalyst to that into our methanol to make biodiesel. And that's how you do a titration.

Your wound care after surgery actually starts weeks ahead of time in getting your body ready.

To prepare your body for your surgery start a few weeks ahead of time in getting good nutrition, properly hydrated and plenty of rest and good exercise. Think of this as an athletic event you are getting ready for.

Being in good physical shape helps your body heal faster because good circulation is vital to getting blood, oxygen and nutrients to the surgical area.

Your skin is the largest organ of the body – and the thinnest. Only 1/10 of an inch separates you from all sorts of toxins. The skin is also highly permeable – what goes on your skin can get in your blood stream. You need to be good to your skin and prepare your skin for the incoming incision or damage that is going to happen. When the skin gets what it needs; vitamins, minerals, proteins and nutrients, it can do what it does best – heal itself.

You need to make wise eating choices, and drink plenty of water. Your diet should include healthy proteins which are building blocks for cells, vitamin C and zinc which are known to promote wound healing. Lots of fresh green vegetables will also help speed up the recovery process. Eliminating processed sugars and carbonated beverages also helps the body mend quicker.

Being in good physical shape will help speed up your recovery as well. This does not necessarily mean go join a gym and go crazy – simply get your body moving. You will do yourself a favor to take a 30 to 40 minute walk each day just to get your blood moving.

Staying properly hydrated helps a body heal better as well. There is a simple way to know how much water is the right amount for you to be drinking daily. You need half your body weight in ounces. For example; if you weigh 150 pounds you should drink half that in ounces: 75 ounces of water daily. That will help flush toxins out of your system and help your skin heal where the incision is going to be.

Lack of sleep takes a toll on your immune system. Try to get a good 7 – 8 hours or more of sleep per night in the weeks leading up to your surgery. Naps are a good thing when needed as well.

Do I really need to say how harmful smoking is to your health and healing process? And please – no alcoholic beverages for a few weeks before at best, and at the least for one week prior to your surgery. Then be kind to your body and refrain for a few weeks after as well.

Afterwards, your healing is helped by continuing to drink plenty of water and getting your needed sleep. Get up and about as soon as possible – the body mends better when the blood is flowing and circulating. Talk with your doctor about what you can and can not do.

If the skin around the wound becomes red, swollen and painful you may have an infection. Call your doctor.

In healthy patients following the wound care after surgery, most wounds heal within two weeks. If you have health problems such as diabetes or a weakened immune system, or are on certain drugs, such as stereoids or chemotherapy drugs your healing will probably take longer.

Wounds on the face usually take one to two weeks to heal. Wounds on the arms, trunk and upper legs take about three weeks. Wounds on the lower legs, especially in people over forty, can take up to 3 months to heal.

How To Practise Mindfulness – The Story of the Leper and the Dirty River

I am sometimes asked how to practise mindfulness when I am discussing the subject of mindfulness with people.

My response is always to say that mindfulness is a spontaneous and naturally occurring state.

We all experience present moment awareness in everyday life when we find ourselves in situations where we are totally focused on the activity we are engaged in.

On these occasions we are totally present, and thus temporarily unaffected by our thoughts.

So how to practise mindfulness is simply about using a series of simple techniques that can, with practise, enable us to replicate present moment awareness more or less on demand.

The hardest aspect of how to practise mindfulness is just doing it!

There is a story in the Bible of a powerful and successful Syrian military commander called Naaman who contracted leprosy, and seeking a cure, approached the Jewish prophet Elisha who was a renowned healer.

Naaman was expecting to be greeted by Elisha and given instructions to perform a complex ritual, but that didn’t happen. Naaman was very disgruntled when Elisha didn’t even come out of his house to greet him and just sent him a message.

The message was that Naaman would be cured if he simply went down to the adjacent river Jordan and immersed himself in it seven times.

Naaman’s pride was offended, and in disgust he got back in his chariot and was about to head for home when one of his staff challenged him.

The point was made that had he been asked to, surely Naaman would have fulfilled any herculean task if that was what it was going to take to get him cured of leprosy, so why not just do this simple thing and immerse himself in the Jordan seven times?

But Naaman was still indignant, his pride was very hurt, and he said that was no way he was going down into the muddy, dirty water of the river Jordan when there were far cleaner, fresher rivers at home…

His staff member must have been particularly loyal to Naaman and concerned for his welfare for he challenged Nathan again along the lines of why couldn’t he just humble himself and just do this one simple thing if that was all it was going to take to cure his leprosy and save his life.

The story concludes with Naaman finally conceding and going down to the dirt, muddy river and immersing himself in it seven times – whereupon the miracle happened and he was cured of his leprosy.

This story of the leper and the dirty river is a powerful metaphor for how to practise mindfulness – be humble and just do this simple thing – just train yourself to be aware.

Does Anxiety Result in Fainting?

Mostly, people do not fault because of or during anxiety attacks. The problem is more about the fear of fainting. The fear of misunderstanding causes intensified anxiety attacks in some people. When a person is experiencing an anxiety attack, his or her blood pressure arises. This makes him or her light-headed and dizzy; he or she may confuse it for feeling faint. This fear becomes the reality for him or her then, and intensifies the anxiety attack. To reduce these interferating symptoms, one can employ the controlled breathing techniques that are recommended to counteract anxiety; one can also try distracting oneself to calm oneself down.

Common forms of anxiety attacks usually only make people's breathing rate increase. This can not normally cause people to faint. Sometimes, however, people have what is known as a vasovagal syncope. This anxiety disorder makes people cease breathing. It is associated with the fear of blood or injuries and people with this fear shut down mentally at the sight of wounds and blood and stop breathing as well. This cuts oxygen supply to the brain and a person might then fault from lack of oxygen. This, however, is a reliably rare form of anxiety.

Sometimes, even more rarely than the previous cases, people who do not even have vasovagal syncope false because the fear of fainting is so real in their heads that they force themselves to false. Regular distraction techniques are a must to counteract these anxiety disorders and keep oneself calm. A person may misunderstand and fall and hurt himself or herself.

Medical Importance and Characteristics of Measles

Properties of the virus

Morphology and Biologic properties Measles virus is a typical paramyxovirus, related to canine distemper and bovine rinderpest. All 3 lack neuraminidase activity. Measles agglutinates monkey erythrocytes at 37 degrees Celsius but does not elute, and it interacts with a distinct cell receptor. Measles virus also causes hemolysis and this activity can be separated from that of the hemagglutinin.

Animal susceptibility and growth of virus The experimental disease has been produced in monkeys. They develop fever, catarrh, Koplik's spots, and a discrete popular rash. The virus has been grown in chick embryos; in cell cultures of human, monkey, and dog kidney tissue; and in human continuous cell lines. In cell cultures, multinucleate syncytial giant cells form by fusion of mononucleated ones, and other cells become spindle-shaped in the course of their degeneration. Nuclear changes consist of margination of the chromatin and its replacement centrally with an acidophilic inclusion body. Measles virus is reliably unstable after it is released from cells. During the culture of the virus, the intracellular virus liter is 10 or more times the extra-cellular liter.

Pathogenesis and pathology The virus enters the respiratory tract, enter cells and multiplications there. During the prodome, the virus is present in the blood, through the respiratory tract, and in nasopharyngeal, tracheo-bronchial, and conjunctival secretions. It persists in the blood and nasopharyngeal secretions for 2 days after the appearance of the rash. Trans-placental transmission of the virus can occur.

Koplik's spots are vesicles in the mouth formed by focal exudations of serum and endothelial cells, followed by focal necrosis. In the skin, the superifical capillaries of the corium are first involved, and it is here that the rash makes its appearance. Generalized lymphoid tissue hyperplasia occurs. Multinucleate giant cells are found in lymph nodes, tonsils, adenoids, spleen, appendix, and skin. In encephalomyelitis, there are petechial hemorrahes, lymphocytic infiltration and later, patchy demyelination in the brain and spinal cord.

Measles nucleoprotein antigens have been identified by immunofluorescence within inclusion bodies in nerve cells of the brain in subacute sclerosing pan-encephalitis (SSPE). The virus has been grown by co-cultivating HeLa cells with brain biopsy material or lymph node material from patients. The presence of latent intracellular measles virus in these specimens suggests a tolerant infection with defective cell-mediated immunity.

If measles antibody is added to cells infected with measles virus, the viral antigens on the cell surface are altered. By expressing fewer viral antigens on the surface, cells may avoid being killed by antibody-or cell-mediated cytotoxic reactions, yet may retain viral genetic information. This may lead to persistent infection as found in SSPE patients.

Warning Signals of Tetanus

Warning si gnals of tetanus should be keptin mind, because the disease could occur even when the injury is minor and totally forgotten. In that case, probably, the injury was so minimal that the patient may not have cared to take a booster dose of the vaccine, or may have remained entirely unimmunized. In such cases, the disease appears like a bolt from the blue. However, if the patient is aware of the early symptoms and signs of the disease, he is likely to immediately report to the physician, and the disease can be treated fully with the availability of effective antitetanus serum (ATS). But, if the patient is late and comes with a full-fledged attack of tetanus, survival may not be possible, as firstly, antitetanus serum (ATS) may not prove effective in neutralizing the large amount of tetanus toxin already present in the blood, and secondly, the patient is likely to die of the various fatal complications of the disease in its advanced stage.

Here, the importance of awareness regarding the warning signals of this disease is vital, so that the patient arrives the doctor quickly, and the treatment is started instantaneously.

The first and the foremost symptom of tetanus is difficulty in opening the mouth (trismus) due to the spasm of the muscles of mastication. Here, the disease is commonly called 'lockjaw'. It may be noted that this difficulty in opening the mouth is painless, and if one tries to open the mouth, the spasm of the muscles that closes the jaw will increase and, therefore, the patient may not be able to open his mouth broadly, howsoever, he may try and, in some cases both the jaws are tightly closed and the teeth clenched.

'Lockjaw' is the earliest characteristic symptom of the disease, and the patient should not delay even if the difficulty in opening the mouth is slight, particularly when there is a history of injury in the past past.

The incubation period of tetanus, ie, the period between the injury and the occurrence of lockjaw, is on the average, 1-3 weeks. The disease may manifest itself within 2-3 days in the case of injury of the face (being near to the central nervous system). On the other hand, the incubation period may be much longer, say even months, if the tetanus spores remain dormant in some of the wounds, where the conditions are not favorable for their germination.

However, lockjaw or difficulty in opening the mouth should not frighten the person; it may also occur as a result of acute inflammation / sepsis of the tonsils and its surrounding areas, including dental conditions, especially imputed tooth; but in such cases, the condition is quite painful, and the patient usually points out the area of ​​pain.

Difficulty in opening the mouth may be accompanied with difficulty in swallowing, with or without some change in the voice, due to the spasm of the muscles for swallowing, as well as of the larynx. Soon stiffness of the neck, tightness of the chest and rigidity of the abdominal wall may take place, due to the spasm of the muscles of the neck, chest and abdomen respectively. The warning signals of tetanus may be summarized in its usual order of sequence as follows:

(i) Lockjaw, with or without recent or past history of injury anywhere on the body.

(ii) Difficulty in swallowing and / or change in voice.

(iii) Stiffness of the neck, followed by tightness of the chest and rigidity of the abdominal wall.

What Causes Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease, caused by a virus which belongs to the herpes family. This virus is known as varicella-zoster virus and also as the Herpes Zoster virus. Not only chickenpox is produced by it but shingles is too.

Chickenpox occurs mostly during the end of the winter and the beginning of the spring. It generally affects children aged from 2 to 8 and can take the form of epidemics.

If an infected person coughs or sneezes, the virus will be spread in the air and will be caught by other healthy persons while breathing. The virus is known to be present in the body long before the skin rash appears; this is the reason why there are so many cases of contamination.

After the virus got into your body it generally needs two weeks to develop and only then the rash will appear. But this does not mean that you are not contagious within these two weeks.

The symptoms of chickenpox are: fever, itchy, red bumps that transform into round blisters with a red base. These blisters will form a crust and will eventually dry. For at least 5 days the infected person should not get into close contact with people that have not suffered from chickenpox and children should not go to school because they can infect others. Pregnant women who have made chickenpox before are safe and so is their baby. If she has not made chickenpox and got in contact with an infected person, the doctor can administer antibodies of chickenpox within 4 days of a possible contamination. After the dry scabs form the rate of contamination will decrease.

After the disease had terminated the virus will not disappear completely, it will shed inside the nervous cells and will remain inactive for some years. At some point, when the immune system will work improperly the virus will reactivate and will cause shingles. This is a painful disease that affects the face and trunk nerves and also causes a rash to appear.

The chickenpox infected person will also be prohibited from flying because the air conditioner in airplanes will transmit the virus more easily to other passengers. The virus is dangerous for those who have AIDS, cancer or follow a treatment with immunosuppressive drugs. Only those who have a good immune system response and those who have been vaccinated against chickenpox will not develop the disease.
