Conquer Your Fear of Spiders

There was a story on the BBC Scotland news website the other day about how a giant spider had been found in a shipping container at a manufacturing company in the west of Scotland. The Huntsman spider is commonly found in Australia, Africa and Asia but this creature found itself in Dumbarton. As if to illustrate this was a beast of an arachnid, the BBC saw fit to publish a photograph of a Huntsman spider along the article, resulting in those with a fear of spiders turning away from their computer / laptop / mobile phone screen in horror. It's arguable who might have gotten the bigger fright upon its discovery – the person who came across it or the poor spider finding itself thousands of miles from home and in Dumbarton, of all places …

A fear of spiders is a fairly common phobia for which hypnotherapy can help. Like most phobias, it does not target anyone in particular. I've been asked if I can provide help to an array of people who have a fear of spiders, from big burly brickies to young teenage girls, one of who recently told me she gets her dad to 'deal' with spiders in her house .

An example recently was 'S', a male in his early 30s. He works in the construction industry and has been in a happy relationship with his partner for nearly five years. He is the proud father to a two-year-old boy. You might think S would be happy with his life and, for the most part, he is. However, there is one issue he struggles with and has done all his life – his fear of spiders.

S has always been afraid of spiders but has always considered his fear as just him being stupid. He has no qualms about dealing with other issues, for example, he and his partner were recently harassed with mice in their home and last year there was a wasp infestation which terrified his partner. Not so S, who deal with it in his stride. However, when it comes to the seemingly harmless spider, S will run to the other side of the room, seeking help and shouting instructions to whoever is in his company to 'get rid of it'.

S approached me as a 'last resort' (actually, that's not as bad as it sounds – hypnotherapy is still a reliably 'young' profession) he had tried other methods but without success. First of all, I told him he was not being 'stupid'. And I congratulated him on taking the first steps to improving his life. We arranged a suitable date and time for an initial consultation – I offer a free consultation to ascertain if my clients will be receptive to hypnotherapy.

S told me he was not sure if hypnotherapy would help cure him of his fear. This was perfectly understandable. He explained he always associated hypnotherapy with swinging stopwatches and making people dance around the room thinking they were a demanted chicken. Part of the initial consultation is to explain the whole process of hypnotherapy to my client. I assured S he would be conscious and aware, in control at all times and he would certainly not be doing anything he did not want to do.

S told me that simply the sight of a 'big hairy spider with their long legs and the way they scuttle across the floor' scared him. He further explained his ratione. 'They appear from nowhere, racing across the floor usually as I'm in a relaxed state. Their clingy webs are everywhere. And I've read that spiders use their own bodily fluids catch their unassuming prey, before cocooning the poor beastie in the stuff and injecting it with some foul substance to dissolve its innards … '

If you have a fear of spiders this is probably too much information. But please bear with me, it's worth quantifying S's thoughts. I asked him how long he had this phobia and if he could remember the first time he feared spiders. He explained he was about 10 years old and was alone at home while his mother had popped out to the shops. He was lying on the couch not feeling very well when he spotted a spider crawling along the bottom of the fireplace. It crawled slowly but steadily and S froze, unable to move, until his mother returned.

It seemed this was the catalyst for his fear which has remained with him ever since. Stripped down to it basic form, S's subconscious mind is controlling him through his experience of seeing that spider many years ago (sorry, S – you're not really that old) When he sees a spider his conscious mind – the one we all have which enables us to perform our usual day-to day tasks such as getting up in the morning, getting dressed, driving the car to work – tells him it's just a spider, a wee harmless beastie that is not interested in him and is probably frittened of S since why it scuttles furiously across the floor to avoid him. S's subconscious mind, however, keeps relating back to that incident when he was ten years old and feeds on his fear of spiders. Until now …

The more I was able to talk to S's subconscious mind – and it took a few sessions repeating no more than an hour each time – the more his fear of spiders subsided. After a few short weeks, hypnotherapy had helped him. S no longer fears spiders and when he sees one crawling across the floor he accepts it for what it is doing.

A lifetime of fear had come to an end.

Control Anxiety

Control Anxiety

Even though we suffer from anxiety, life still goes on. We need to learn how to control anxiety so that we may continue to live and prosper. Most people that suffer from anxiety live normal lives. They have families, they work, they love, they raise children, they take vacations and they look just like everyone else. The difference is, we may become angry or suffer from a panic attack at any moment. These attacks can range from complete debilitation to mild discomfort. Some people are able to hide their attacks and no one around them is the wiser. For an unfortunate few, the anxiety is so overwhelming that it controls their lives and their lifestyle and their behavior is completely based around their anxiety.

Whichever category you may fall under, just know it is possible to function even while you are experiencing anxiety. In the article, Dealing with Anxiety, you read about the fear scale. If you are an 8 or above, it becomes very difficult to focus on anything but your anxiety. For people in that category, it is very important that you work on different methods to bring your fear level down to a 7 or below, before trying some of the tactics in this article. You can manage that by medication, breathing techniques, exercise or meditation. The point is, be pro-active and work towards lowering your anxiety fear level.

Fear Scale

Just to recap from a previous article, keep a journal in which you record daily what you feel your level of anxiety to be. 0 = No fear at all, completely relaxed, 10 = The worst fear you have ever had, complete panic. 4 through 8 represent a discomfort zone of heightened anxiety levels that most people can still function through. If you find yourself in that zone, it is important to work voluntarily in that zone in order to reclaim your life from the anxiety monster. In other words, it is important to CONTROL ANXIETY, rather than anxiety control you. Remember also, you are changing the faulty wiring in your brain by not responding to the false alarm that is being sounded. You are training the way your body responds (the physical symptoms) to your anxiety. At first, this may seem very difficult, but overtime, you will gradually notice the less credit you give your anxiety, the less effect it will have on you.

A big part of anxiety is our reaction to it. When anxiety triggers in our bodies, we experience physical symptoms. The second bite the anxiety monster takes is our fear of those symptoms. The less fear we have of those symptoms, the less control anxiety has over us. Only active practice will desensitize our nervous system.

Functioning with high levels of anxiety

Most people that experience a high level of anxiety (8 or above) find it very difficult to focus on anything but their anxiety. This makes it very difficult to use any of your calming techniques. That is why it is so important to practice, practice, practice! The time to practice is not when you are in critical mode, but when you are experiencing mild to moderate anxiety. It is during those times that you control anxiety with your breathing techniques or meditation or whatever it is you have found that works for you.

Imagine playing a game of golf with your buddy Jim. The game has come down to the last putt on the last hole of the course. Both you and Jim golf on a regular basis. Over the last few months, Jim has been practicing on his swing while teeing off. You on the other hand have been practicing over the last few months on your putting. You are both about ten feet away from the hole. Who has the better chance of sinking the ball? That's right! You do! It really is that simple, if you practice something, when it comes time to use it, you will be more able to do it than someone who has not practice it. Plain and simple!

If all else fails, remember this, this is unpleasant, but not dangerous. Let me say that again. If you are experiencing anxiety over a level of 8, it is unsuitable, BUT NOT DANGEROUS! You must remember that above all else. The feelings at this high level of anxiety are so overwhelming that it is very easy to respond to the false alarm your body is sounding by concluding that real danger is at hand. Look around you, is anyone else panicking? No? Then nothing is wrong, you are experiencing a false alarm, a few chemicals out of place in your sensitized brain.

Always leave yourself an out

I challenge you to face the anxiety monster head on. But, you may not win the war in one battle. It may take several times, even several months before you feel enough improvement to realize you are winning the war. That is why, before the battle even starts, have an out. Running from the anxiety monster never works. You may feel better, but the monster knows it beat you. And you are training yourself to flee every time you face the monster. An out is different. An out is simply a contract that you have made with yourself beforehand. You have agreed to take a break and to return to the situation in a more manageable way in the near future. If you do take an out, make sure and get back in the fight as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the harder it may be to return.

Baby steps

Use imagery to fight the anxiety monster on your terms. Visualize or imagine the place or situation that causes you anxiety. When the monster shows up, begin working on lowering your anxiety. Keep your eyes closed when you use imagery. Your out is opening your eyes. This exercise is under your complete control. Fight the monster and feel your anxiety levels lowering. If it becomes too much, open your eyes. You are safe, you are in control. Know before you begin an exercise like this, what exactly you are going to do to fight the monster, know what your out is and know that you are in complete control.

Again, this takes practice. Stick with it and I guarantee you will see results. Once you can control the monster using imagery, it is time to step it up a notch and search out the monster on his home turf. If for example you are having trouble driving, imagine driving while in a comfortable setting at home and deal with your anxiety on your terms. Once you have complete control over your anxiety while at home, then it's time to take it a step further. Simply sit in your car in your driveway and begin the exercise all over. Sit back relax, feel the anxiety as it comes on, once your anxiety level is 4 or over, start decreasing it. Once you have mastered this sitting in your car, go for a short slow drive in your neighborhood or find an empty parking lot and repeat the process. From there, find a place you can go a little faster and so on until you are driving on the freeway and control anxiety completely.

My Story

Several years ago I experienced a panic attack while driving down the freeway with my family in the car. I had to pull over and let my wife drive. It was a very embarrassing time for me to say the least. Even worse, I started experiencing anxiety every time I drive with someone in the car.

When I finally had had enough, I decided to do something about my problem. Using imagery, I sat in my favorite comfortable chair at home and closed my eyes. I called out to the anxiety monster and told him he was not going to bother me anymore. I focused my thoughts and began daydreaming about taking a drive with my family on the freeway. I tried to make it as real as I could in my mind. Admittedly, I had trouble staying focused at first. I could imagine being in the car and driving down the freeway, but my brain wandered and I began thinking of other things. I was unable to bring up any angry feelings and the monster did not show up.

But, guess what? I stuck with it and tried again and again. Each day I tried again. On the third day, something happened. I was able to focus enough that I actually began to feel anxious. I pushed into those feelings and tried to increase my anxiety. I actually began to feel more anxiously and ever I was experiencing an anxiety attack. For me, there are two tell tale signs that I experience. I get a lump in my throat and my palms sweat. Once I started feeling anxious, I continued to imagine driving and I began to calm myself with deep breathing (which I had been practicing for a few months prior) and by calming myself using a mild form of meditation. Soon my anxiety disappeared.

Over the next two weeks, I was able to go from making myself anxious while imagining driving and then calming myself, to not being able to make myself anxious at all while imagining driving. I simply lost the fear of pretending driving. That was great, but now it was time to try it for real. My first step was to drive by myself and try to make myself anxious. For some reason, the only time I became angry is when I had other people in the car with me. I never became anxious while driving alone. I used the same techniques that I did with the imagery, minus closing my eyes, as obviously that would not have worked very well. I went through the exact same process and within a few days, I could no longer make myself anxious while driving alone.

Remember what I said about baby steps? I decided that for my first drive that I would only take one other person with me. I did not want to overwhelm myself with a car full of people. My wife has been by my side through all of this and she was kind enough to volunteer to go for a ride with me. If I may, I would like to stray for a second and say, if you have someone in your life that "gets you." Recruit them if you can, it makes things so much easier when you have another person on your team. Anyway, for our first drive, I decided to stay in the neighborhood and at speeds 20 MPH and under. I dug around around for ten minutes and realized the anxiety monster was not going to show up. I usually only experienced the attacks while on the freeway.

So, I called out to him and invited him to a fight. I used the exact same process that I did when I was sitting in my favorite chair (except for the eyes closed). And when he showed up, I calmed myself and made him go away. By this point, I had done it so much, I felt in total control. I felt like I had a new super power, I could almost control my anxiety at will. This was very empowering for me because I had experienced anxiety in one form or another for over the last 20 years. I was doing so well, that at that moment, I decided to take my wife for a ride on the freeway.

During that trip, I actually had to think about being an exotic, because it was not happening on its own. I know it sounds counter intuitive to try and make yourself anxious, but this was an important step for me, I had to show the anxiety monster who was boss. Try as hard as I may, I was only able to bring my anxiety level up to about a three. In any case, after being mildly anxious for a few minutes and realizing that I was not going to get any more exotic, I was my calming thoughts and literally within a few moments the anxiety was gone.

About a week later I was driving on the freeway, this time with my entire family in the car with me. Traffic around me was moving pretty fast and I was going with the flow. I came up on a long curve in the freeway and had to slow a bit because of my speed. At that moment, guess who showed up. If you guessed the anxiety monster, you would be right. My first reaction was to hit the brakes a little harder than I should have. My wife actually looked over at me and asked if I was okay.

I was so unprepared at that moment to experience anxiety that it actually caught me off guard. But that's how it usually happens is not it? It often shows up when you least expect it to. At that moment, I actually felt a full blown panic attack coming on and my first thought, as it had been in the past was to pull to the right shoulder. I slowed down and moved into the slow lane and then I remembered all the practicing I had been doing. I suddenly realized what a great opportunity this was going to be for me to actually calm myself in the face of a real panic attack.

You see, all the previous times, it was easy because I had been working on it for a few days in a row, but now, here I was a week later and I was treated unprepared. It was time to see what I was capable of. I do have to say, I felt very confident in my ability to lower my anxiety level, I had done it several times before and was pretty sure I could do it again. The first thing I did was to get my breath under control. I started taking deep breaths, almost as if I was trying to yawn (I actually did yawn a few times). As soon as I focused on my breathing, I realized that I was taking short rapid breaths, I never really noticed that I was breathing like that until I started focusing on my breathing.

My wife, who I love dearly, has always been very supportive with my anxiety. But, unfortunately at this moment, she actually became a distraction for me. You see, as I began to control my breathing, the next part of the process was to calm my mind. The problem was, my wife sitting next to me in the passenger seat was staring at me and began asking me if I wanted to pull over and let her drive. She was doing this because she was trying to help me, but in fact it was distracting me from being able to calm my mind. I told her to give me a few minutes, but within those few minutes she asked me several times if I was okay and if she needed to drive.

The great thing about the way this happened is that it was as real of a situation as it gets. Most of the other times that I had cooked the monster, it was under controlled circumstances. But this time, I had the entire family in the car, I'm on the freeway, the panic snuck up on me and my wife will not stop asking me if I am okay. When I think about it afterwards, I realize that was the perfect situation to fight the monster in, because if I could beat him there, I could beat him anywhere.

I told my wife once more to give me a few minutes and I refocused on my breathing. I was already breathing pretty well, I had been practicing deep breathing for some time now and every time I did it, it was easier and easier to do. With my breathing good, I began calming my mind. I used imagery for this. When I was a little kid, I had an uncle that used to take me fishing at a lake nearby. It was one of my favorite things to do as a child. Previously I had begun using that lake and that time with my uncle as my calm and safe place to be. In practice, I would imagine myself back at the lake with my uncle, it was very peaceful and restful and no harm could come to me there.

With my eyes open (for obvious reasons), I envisioned myself on the shore of the lake. I was with my uncle and we were both fishing. The day was beautiful and warm, the lake was serene. I was at total peace and all was good. I began recalling minor details of those times, the way my fishing pole looked, the way the air smelled, the lunch that my aunt always packed for us. I realized how good I felt and how happy I was.

It was only a matter of minutes before I realized that I was fine and that the panic had left me as quick as it had shown up. My wife, who had been quiet for several minutes, finally spoke up and I will never forget what she asked me. She asked, "Why are you smiling?" I had not even realized it, but I had a smile spread across my face. As she asked this, I looked in the rear view mirror and sure enough, I had a grin on my face. I looked at my wife and simply said, "I made it go away." I have to tell you, that was one of the most powerful moments in my life. I suddenly felt like anxiety would never be a problem for me again.

Fast forward five years later and I have some retrospective comments to make. First, unfortunately, it was not the last of my anxiety. I still to this day sometimes feel anxious. What I have come to realize is that it is never going to go completely away. But, and it's a big BUT, since that day I have never experienced anxiety over a four. Before I allow it to go any higher, I calm myself and bring it back down. I used to experience full blown panic attacks where I would suddenly stand up or stop what I was doing and feel completely lost and confused. I would think I needed to call 911. It was that bad, not anymore because and for that I am thankful.

The second thing I realized is this, the reason I was able to get my anxiety under control that afternoon driving with my family, is because of all the time and practice I put in before hand. You have to understand that the first time you try these techniques, they are not going to needlessly work. Especially if you try to use them while you are in full blown panic mode. You must practice your breathing, you must practice calming your mind, then and only then will it start working for you.

It is funny, this article actually took me a few days to write. This morning while I was dressing for work an interesting thought occurred to me. I recently had a job change within my work. This job change required that I start wearing a tie to work. I have always been horrible at tying a tie. So, I found a youtube video and learned how to tie a double Windsor knot. For the first month, while putting on my tie, I would take my I-phone and set it down in front of me and follow the video step by step. It was the only way I could successfully tie my tie in a double Windsor knot. This morning, as I have for the last few months, I was tying my tie while looking in the mirror and I was amazed at how easy it was to tie a double Windsor knot. I watched as my fingers deftly maneuvered the tie until I was finished. I realized, just like my anxiety, I was only able to accomplish this task after several weeks of practice.

Is not that just like everything in life? The more we do something, the better we become at it. No matter what you want to accomplish in life, the more you try, the more you do it, the more you practice, the better you become at it. There is no difference with anxiety. It may take you weeks or even months, but if you stick with techniques stated in my site you will actually master them and then you will master your anxiety.

Restless Leg Syndrome – Healing is Possible

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is defined by the International Restless legs syndrome Study Group, which was established to create a medical diagnosis. The IRLS Study Group narrowed the symptoms to four essential criteria needed for clinical diagnosis.

These criteria are:

1. The urge to move the legs, usually accompanied or caused by uncomfortable and unpleasant sensations in the legs

2. Symptoms of restless legs syndrome are worse during rest or inactivity

3. Symptoms are partially or totally relieved by movement

4. Restless legs syndrome is worse at night.

These criteria are the most frequently reported symptoms that something isn’t ‘right’ within the person’s mind, body and/or spirit. However, since western medicine only treat symptoms the root cause for these symptoms are never addressed.

People, who suffer from restless leg syndrome often have emotional distress symptoms, including depression and anxiety. Other risk factors are heavy smoking, unemployment status, hypertension, gastroesophageal reflux disease, arthritis, and diabetes. Sleep apnea and insomnia appear to be other risk factors for restless leg syndrome, along with difficulty falling asleep (taking more than 30 minutes), driving while drowsy and excessive daytime fatigue.

Subjects with self-reported restless leg syndrome also have a higher incidence of being late for work, missing work, making errors at work and missing social events because of fatigue more often than those without restless leg syndrome.

Requip manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline is the most frequently prescribed antidote. The precise mechanism of action of Requip as a treatment for Restless Legs Syndrome (also known as Ekbom Syndrome) is unknown. Although, the pathophysiology of RLS is largely unknown, neuropharmacological evidence suggests primary dopaminergic system involvement. Positron emission tomographic (PET) studies suggest that a mild striatal presynaptic dopaminergic dysfunction may be involved in the pathogenesis of RLS.

In clinical trials for restless legs syndrome, the most common side effects of Requip were nausea, extreme drowsiness, vomiting, dizziness and fatigue. In December 2004, a European Union panel of experts initiated a probe of the drug after concerns surfaced about the product’s effectiveness and long-term safety. Called Adartrel in Europe, the drug is sold in a few countries but has not yet received full European approval. Whether the drug, Requip has been approved seems irrelevant since the side effects seem worse than the problem. One is trading–the urge to move the legs, usually accompanied or caused by uncomfortable and unpleasant sensations in the legs with nausea, extreme drowsiness, vomiting, dizziness and fatigue.

THERE IS HOPE: After many years of working with those suffering with RLS, I have learned RLS can be readily healed with 100% long-term results and satisfaction with no side effects. While the western medical profession (Allopathic medicine) says there is NO known cause for RLS, there is a plausible explanation for the symptoms to occur and therein lies the clues to the healing process.

I have had success helping clients with RLS simply by adding magnesium and calcium at bedtime because these minerals calm muscles and nerves. A calming botanical such as valerian, passion flower, lemon balm and skullcap can also be added to support sleep and relaxation. RBC nutrients such as magnesium, calcium and potassium through many functional laboratories (provides a better indicator of nutrient status, compared to the serum). In addition to indicating nutrient status, these minerals play a significant role with blood pressure regulation and overall cardiovascular health.

I recommend an organic acid test (Pharmanex Lifepak Nano), which is a nutritional anti-aging program formulated to nourish and protect cells, tissues, and repair/replace cells. It identifies imbalances occurring in the body that precede abnormal findings on a CBC or an MP. Organic acids are products of metabolism that can sensitively identify nutrient deficiencies that lead to metabolic roadblocks. Organic acids go beyond measuring nutrient concentrations by assessing whether the nutrient is functioning adequately. Abnormal concentrations of organic acids in the urine can provide a functional marker for metabolic effects of nutrient deficiencies, genetic polymorphisms, impaired enzyme function, toxic exposure, neuroendocrine activity and intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Organic acid testing can indicate the functional need for specific nutrients, diet modification, antioxidant protection, detoxification and other therapies.

There is some evidence indicating that low iron levels in the brain may be associated with RLS. A CBC w/diff and an iron panel (serum iron, ferritin, % saturation, TIBC, UIBC) can identify an iron deficiency.

Restless leg syndrome may only be just a small part of the picture. It may be a simple nutrient deficiency in many cases, however, it is important to look further into the client’s health. This includes thoroughly reviewing the client’s history, looking deeper into the cardiovascular system and other inflammatory markers in order to provide an effective treatment plan.

In addition to the nutritional aspect many RLS sufferers I have worked with were also, verbal, physical and/or sexual trauma survivors. While this fact may not give reason to assume that other RLS sufferers are verbal, physical and/or sexual trauma survivors, it is a strong indication there is a high probability.

First let us look at the dynamic of verbal, physical or sexual trauma. There are several inherent factors that can not be underestimated in these acts of trauma. Behavior between adult and child is traditionally looked at from the perspective of the adult rather than the child. The adult reasons that because an adult does not experience adverse affects neither will a child. This reasoning is faulty to the nth degree. There are several reasons why an experience can be damaging to a child and not damaging to an adult.

First and foremost, the child generally has no frame of reference from which to reconcile the experience. Second, since the experience is usually orchestrated through an adult the child knows and loves, the child has no one to discuss their adverse experience, because the adult is unwilling to acknowledge the negative consequences of their behavior. Thus, the child suffers in silence–holding the blame, shame and humiliation of their reaction, which has been deemed by an adult as uniquely inappropriate, uncharacteristic for the circumstance and therefore unworthy of discussion.

The child’s only source of comfort and avenue to reconcile experiences is the family. Thus, when the family fails to meet the child’s emotional needs, it is an insidious betrayal so profound that a child’s sense of trust is compromised and the child works mightily to regain fully what is a birthright.

The next layer of betrayal is the ‘age old’ tradition of using hitting as a form of discipline. It is rationalized that hitting will ‘teach the child a lesson’ they will never forget. This reasoning is faulty, because spanking creates shock, whereby the mind is unable to focus or retain logic rather than enhance comprehension. Furthermore, hitting engenders rage rather than respect. Thus instead of creating learning and compliance the child has learned to distrust adults. In order to maintain the relationship, the child pushes the rage deep into the psyche; the accompanying response to body boundary violations is to act out in other ways that may include rebellion, violence, self-destructive behavior etc. In addition, hitting is a body boundary violation–the skin is the largest sensory organ and when it is compromised it causes untold damage.

Last, but not least, hitting is hypocrisy–I love you therefore, I hit you. Love and hurting can not coexist simultaneously. Thus, while hitting the child–the adult is not being loving–they are hurting the child. This is abundantly clear to the child, but has become a distorted concept as adults have been indoctrinated in the ‘spare the rod, spoil the child’ rhetoric.

During the act of verbal, physical or sexual traumatizing, the mind, body and spirit have experienced an assault. This assault is experienced vis-à-vis all five senses–touch, hearing, smell, taste and seeing. These sensory organs hold the experience until it can be reconciled. Unfortunately, since the child seldom has the opportunity to reconcile the experience and have a meeting of understanding between adult and him/herself, the experience stays trapped in the system. Thus, for example: the traumatizing spanking on the buttocks stays trapped in the buttocks and legs. Or because a child, who is being verbally assaulted has a flight or fight reaction, but can neither, fight or flee, the energy is trapped in the legs, which is the first line of defense for fighting or fleeing. Since the child can do neither the energy is stored and never released. Thus, years later when one’s faces a similar emotionally charged experience the old experience resurfaces as RLS. This phenomenon is commonly called trapped energy.

These childhood experiences can be healed through a seven-step multi-faceted process. Talk therapy is inadequate to uncover the emotional pain, and heal the trauma trapped in muscles and tissue. To fully appreciate the depth of this pain, I will quote one of my clients, “Even my blood hurts.” A multifaceted healing process specifically focused on trauma recovery and diligent work is the most effective; wherein the survivor can replenish their emotional and spiritual identity and empowerment.

A Guide to Data Backup and Why You Need It

The purpose for the data backup is so that in the event anything were ever to happen to your computer, for instance if it were to get a virus or something else that to disrupted or even completely deleted any of your files or personal information, you would have the data backup and so you would be able to get all the information back.

There are a few different options that you can choose from when it comes to data backup, including online data backup for one because it is so convenient and because it is often free as well.

There are many different methods that you can choose to use to backup your computer data, but regardless there are a few things that you are going to require. All that is required to store your information on a drive or disk separate from your computer will depend on the method that you choose.

For instance if you operate on a home LAN system, you can transfer your files onto the other computers on the network so that if the computer you use primarily even went down you would have the information still stored on these other computers.

If you want to go with the online data backup option, there are a couple of online companies in particular that you are going to want to consider for their data backup services. This includes Storage Pipe for one, a company that is known for providing world-class corporate data protection solutions including online backup and recovery. They allow for small to large businesses to decrease operations costs and complexity, and for affordable prices.

Another company that you may want to consider here is Data Protection, which is a privately held company that offers effective data backup solutions. They are focused solely on backup and storage for business clients and they have designed an easily managed and affordable solution that is scalable.

They understand that the handling of data has evolved significantly in the past few years in response to security threats and legislative acts addressing privacy and financial reporting issues and they have made the proper steps to keep up with these advances.

The Face of Hyperthyroidism – The Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Hypothyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is defined as the excess production of thyroid hormone. This condition leads to several physiologic effects that may alter even the physical appearance of a patient with hyperthyroidism. Thyroid hormone controls most of the body's metabolism and this ability is made manifest in force in cases of hyperthyroidism.

What Causes Hyperthyroidism?

Patients with hyperthyroidism typically have thyroid glands that are two to three times larger than normal thyroid gland. These hyperthyroid glands are characterized by increased cell proliferation and infolding of the follicular cell lining into the follicles, increasing cell population even more. These hyperthyroid cells also secret thyroid hormone at a rate faster than normal thyroid cells.

These changes may also be found in instances where there is a large amount of circulating thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the body. However, in hyperthyroidism, TSH levels are decreased due to the inhibitory of their secretion by the already increased amount of circulating thyroid hormone in the body. In normal conditions, an increase of thyroid hormone signals the pituitary gland to stop secreting TSH and consequentially, the thyroid gland stops secreting thyroid hormone due to lack of stimulus by the decrease in TSH. This is not so in hyperthyroidism.

In hyperthyroidism, a similar substance to TSH may be found in circulation – thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin or TSI. They have a prolonged stimulatory effect on the thyroid gland and causes thyroid cells to continue secret since the reduced levels of TSH.

Another cause for hyperthyroidism is the presence of a thyroid adenoma or a tumor in the thyroid tissue that uncontrollably secretes increased amounts of thyroid hormone. Normal thyroid cells around the tumor stop secreting hormone due to reduced TSH levels but the tumor keeps on secreting thyroid hormone by itself. This cause does not have any association with autoimmunity.

Hyperthyroidism is characterized by a high state of excitability, intolerance to heat, increased sweating, mild to extreme weight loss, diabetes, muscle weakness, nervousness, extreme fatigue but inability to sleep, and tremor of the hands.

Another symptom of hyperthyroidism is exophthalmos , in which there is protrusion of the eyeballs. In several cases, the degree of protrusion is so great that it stretches the optic nerve enough to damage it. The eyesballs also do not close completely when sleep or when the patient blinks, causing further damage to the eyes.

Diagnostic Tests for Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is usually diagnosed based on the levels of free thyroxine circulating in the plasma using radioimmunoassay procedures. In some instances, the measure of triiodothyronine is also included in the workup.

Other tests or signs that indicate hyperthyroidism include:

  • Increase in the metabolic rate of the patient by + 30 to +60 in cases of severe hyperthyroidism.
  • Decrease in the concentration of TSH in the plasma. This is because the body tries to control the excessive secretion of thyroid hormone by suppressing its usual stimulant. In the usual type of thyrotoxicosis, there is very little plasma TSH left.
  • Measurement of TSI levels to differentiate between thyrotoxicosis. TSI levels are typically increased in cases of thyrotoxicosis but low in cases of thyroid adenoma.

Treatment for Hyperthyroidism

Surgical removal of most of the thyroid gland is the most direct treatment for hyperthyroidism. Prior to the operation, the patient is first administrated with doses of propylthiouracil, which decrees hormone function, until the patient's metabolic rate returns to normal. Then, large doses of iodides are administered for one to two weeks immediately before the operation, causing the gland to recede in size and its blood supply to diminish. These procedures have reduced the operative mortality to 1 in 1000 operations from 1 in 25 prior to development of modern procedures.

In other cases of hyperthyroidism, a hyperplastic thyroid gland may also be treated with radioactive iodine. Eighty to ninety percent of the iodine injected is absorbed by the hyperplastic gland. Because the iodine is radioactive, it destroys almost all the secretory cells of the thyroid gland. Typically, the patient is administrated with 5 millicuries of radioactive iodine and assessed several weeks later. If the patient remains hyperthyroid, additional doses may be given until normal thyroid function is reinstated.

The Beatles Rise to The Top – Meet Astrid in Germany

The "Beatles" was formed in the summer of 1962 and from that moment on John Lennon and Paul McCartney, created a pop legend that (not even the band themselves) could have imagined the impact they were about to create. The boys from Liverpool, where they crafted their talent and took the musical world by storm.

George Harrison would become the dark horse in the later years by surpassing Lennon / McCartney in writing the most covered song. That song was "Something ', with" Frank Sinatra' covered himself and claimed to be the most beautiful song Lennon / McCartney ever composed. That's just the way it was for George being in the giant shadow cast by his band mates superior writing talent.

Ringo, the other second rate Beatle, was given one song per album compared to George's two. There was a good reason for this. Georges songs were not particularly good early on and they had a hard time letting him know this without hurting his feelings but when George developed his writing skills. He did so in a big way.

Ringo did not write at all. John and Paul did make it a point, out of kindness or a novelty to make sure he had one song on every album. Every one would have at least one song on every album. In the beginning for Ringo, they choose standards such as "Honey Do not" an old Carl Perkins standard or "Act Naturally" by Johnny Russell / Vonie Harrison which was a phenomenal choice for both songs. I cant picture John, Paul or George pulling either of these off any better. In the end they were able to pen such songs as 'Yellow Submarine "" Octopus's Garden "and" With a Little Help From my Friends' for Ringo to sing.

Your going to find out that what ever the Beatles touched, t was to turn to gold. A quick example; Magical Mystery Tour was considered a failure by the critics. While reporting on the failure of Magical Mystery Tour "Time" magazine subregually noted the film had grossed 2 million from college rentals and in America the album had grossed 8 million in its first 10 days. This does not include England where the EP hit number 1. As usual, everything they touched, it turned to gold.

This band was driven by the shear genius of John Lennon and Paul McCartney and there ability to write compositions that treated the imaginations of the young and older generation.Their stage presence often reduced their audience to tears. It did not matter that more often that not there music could not be heard above the constant screams from the first note of show to the very end.

This often frustrated the "Beatles" to the point where they rushed through the shows to them over with. George (Harrison) had once commented that "they felt like performing flea's".

The "Beatles" had an intense talent individually and collectively and also had the drive to reach there goals. Under the leadership of Brian Epstien the band would criss cross the country on an endless tour of one night stands.

In the early days without drawing a breath they were able to squeeze in a growing number of requests for Television and radio recording without taking a breath in their touring schedule.

Before their fortune and fame were to spread beyond the Merseyside, and a break through tour of Sweden in 1963 which was followed early the next year by a trip to America.

Prior to this tour they had crossed the Mersey two separate times for extended stays in Germany. The first trip had been booked by their manager at the time "Allen Williams". Buy the time the band arrived there they found out that they had been booked at the Indra Club. This was a dreary little dive compared to the Kaiserkeller '. They were expected to play from seven in the evening to two or three o'clock in the morning.

It was during this trip the boys met two important personalities who would unknowingly alter the history of "The Beatles" and Rock and Roll forever. As fate would have the boys would cross path's with beautiful girl named Astrid Kirchherr and the son of a Berlin born doctor named Klaus Voorman.

The Indra Club featured a neon elephant outside the front door and a small cramped stage at the back of the club. The shows usually included strippers and sex shows and sometimes nude female wrestlers. The regulars at this venue consist of a cross section of the Reeperbahns seedy underbelly of drug pushers, transvestites and gangsters, who were not shy about flashing or using their arsenal of weapons when the occasion was called upon and this rogue bunch were not exactly thrilled when these oddly dressed English boys who showed up ready to entertain.

Bruno Koschmider was the owner and felt obliged to find them room and board. He put them up in the basement of another club he owned called the "Bambi Keno" There were three filthy cuby holes at the front of the theater and their quarters were located right behind the screen.

Gangster movies and porn films alternated in the early afternoon and it was not uncommon for the boys to wake up to the sounds of excessive panting. The living conditions were deplorable and if one of them were brave enough to sift through the trash strewn on the floor it wast surprised to find human excrement.

A public toilet at the back of the theater was all that was available to them and if it were not for the insistence of there manager (Allen Williams) they would have gone without clean bed sheets and towels. Five months would pass with the band taking little more that sponge bath's, as the dressing room at the Indra Club also considered of the men's toilet.

During this period there meals consist of bowls of cornflakes when they woke in the afternoon. there were the occasional dinner at the Sea mans Mission where the manager (who was English) took it upon himself to help them out with cut-rate seaman fares.

It was at this time in their young life's that they took a longer prolonged interest in diet pills (uppers, prelys) or a German made pills called "Preluden. ankle socks who was the toilet attendant at The Indra club took a liking to the boys.

Paul was the last to give in to the "Peer Presure 'of the" Devils Drugs "as he referred to them. Paul's dad, being a" wise working class "guy for warned him to" WATCH OUT "for life on the Reeperbahn ( Hamburg) was no place for them to learn the hard lessons of life.

These consist of arguing over who was the band leader. They had become irritable from working so hard and got caught up in the perpetual daily routines.

This era pre-dates Ringo, as he was not to join the group for almost a year later. Pete Best was the drummer. Although the band quickly found out they needed these Preelly's to get through the long nights of endless playing. Pete did not participate in this activity and this crazy behavior and it was at this point that a wall was formed between him and his mates.

Stu Suttcliff was also a member during this period and was the bass player. He had been brought on board by his close friend John who were class mates back in a Liverpool art school. Although not a very good musician John talked about him buying a new Bass guitar with some money he had won in an art contest back in home. Stu reluctantly agreed

Stu would have also become a target of Paul's wrath. There were many arguments about his ability to play. One night on stage he and Paul had in all out brawl with Stu getting the short end of it. He was much smaller than Paul. Stu ended up leaving shortly after this event and Paul was to take on the Bass guitar full time

Ingesting large quantities of these uppers made them thirsty and what better place to be when your thirsty? The drinks where free and plentiful from the barmaids when Koschmider was not looking. Also it was common practice for the patrons to send up drinks to the band as they wanted to be entertained and not watch the group standing around.

It is also known that some of the band mates where a bit jealous of Pete Best as he was attracting more girls then the rest. Being a competitive bunch and all, this really bothered Paul the most.

Koschmider extended the Beatles engagement only after another group (Derry and the Seniors) from Liverpool where to exhausted to continue there engagement at the Kaiserkeller. It was then the band was moved from "The Indra Club" to this much larger venue.

The decor consulted of Fishnets and portholes. It was intense compared to "The Indra 'and a much rougher crowd.

This club had it's own small army of efficient bouncers who where frequently called into action in this brutally violent club. Horst Fasher was in charge of security. He was an ex-boxer who allegedly spent time in jail for a street fight in which a sailor was killed by the bare fist of this menacing bouncer.

Fasher took a liking to the boys, John in particular, who was crazed and out of control. Their provocative behavior only got worse with this new found special protection. Driven by alcohol and amphetamines the boys behavior began to spin out of control.

Time passed as summer turned to autumn and once again there engagement was extended. The boys had beenfriend two German natives during this visit. Claus Vorman and Astrid Kirchherr. Clause would go on to record on many of "The Beatles" solo projects. Astrid would style the now famous Beatle hair cuts and would photograph the album cover "With The Beatles" in which the four faces are pictured in half white and half black.

Klaus had a tremendous effect on the boys during this period of their lives. He was befuddled by Pompadour hairedo's and there wild checkered jackets or their leather attire that they would casually flaunt like every day casual or work gear.Klaus was specifically taken by Stu Sutcliff, the least talented of the group.

Seems Klaus was taken by this moody mysterious character hiding behind his bass guitar and dark clip on sun glasses. Klaus was an art student in Hamburg as was Astrid. They were room mates and after a heated exchange between the two one afternoon Klaus stumbled into the Kaiserkeller to get his mind off of the "events" of the afternoon. On any normal day he would not have stumbled into a such a dangerous area like the Kaiserkeller.

Klaus was so captivated by their music, style and spirit he came back two nights later with Astrid. They would return the next night, and the next until Astrid herself was hooked. Astrid had a blond pixie haircut with sad, large, dark eye's. She was a girl of exotic beauty.

Astrid was pretty enough to capture the eye of each and every member of the group. She was enrolled at a private academy called the Meister Schule where she was studying art, and had met Klaus. When she met the boys Klaus was living in a top floor apartment of her mothers house and she was working as a photographers assistant.

Astrid became enchanted with these strange English boys and managed to strike up a friendship since the lack of communication between them due to language differences. In return the boys were thrilled to meet there "peasants' and immediately latch on th Klaus and Astrid as natural companions.

It was a natural fit for this new friendship and Astrid began to photograph them any opportunity she had. She began to bring follow German art student's to the club. Like Astrid, they dressed in leather trousers and black heavy black leather trench coats.

These were aa pale, intense, group labeled "Exis" short for "existentialists" considered vogue. Not considered rockers or mods though. They were a pale ascetic and extremely intense group.

Any of the photo's you see of The Beatles "in Germany wearing leather outfits, it was was from this relationship that the boys would change trends in there daily attire.

According to Paul, They (the band) did not completely bath (sponge bath only) till the third trip to Germany. That is when Astrid had let them use her accommodations.

Stu Sutcliff ": I Just recently I have found the most wonderful friends, the most beautiful looking group I have ever sen. insipid member of the group 'being told how much Superior I looked- this along the great Romeo, John Lennon and his two stalwarts Paul and George: the Casanova of Hamburg!

As it turned out this meeting would be more beneficial to the band. Astrid and Klaus group of friend were much more cultures than the locals and they were "The Artsy Crowd" and the boys took more from them, then they learned from the band.

Jurgen, was was a member of Astrids group and they would take the band to seedy places such as the old fair ground or a bombed route to photograph the band. This is when the boys started to see how things were done. They did not like glitter. They started using these early handout photo's. They loved the image.

Astrid bought them to a leather goods retailers which would not be available or seen in London at the time. The Marlon Brando image they thought after was now ripe for the picking. Every one in the band loved the idea of leather, but it was Astrid who had the leather garments and had the Beatle haircut of the future.

The Beatles did come home with a style that had never been witnessed before. It turns out Astrid left her mark on the world through "The Beatles". The hair cuts made such an impression that wigs were modeled after this style and where a huge success. The leather would have stayed if john had his way. He reluctantly cave in to Brian Epstien to sacrifice the leather for the suites.

I, myself have no complaints. It brought the world the greatest band ever, at a time that was unfortunately needed. I loved almost everything John Lennon produced. But there was that time where he had referred the "Sargent Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band" album as rubbish. These were not John's better days as far as I'm concerned.

It was during this trip Stu fell deeply in love with Astrid, and though they could not speak more than a few words to each other, due to the language barrier. They had become engaged. Stu would leave the band and stay in Germany and Paul taken over duties on Bass.

Five more months had past in Hamburg and if they had not gotten in trouble they may have stayed another year if the police did not throw then out. The problems began when Peter Eckhorn, opened a top ten club and began to lure Reeperbahn club employees away including the Kaiserkeller's fearful bouncer Horst Fasher and most of his thugs. Rosa, the wash room (prelyly's) attendant was also lured away.

Koschmider made it clear to the boys that they could not work with in 35 weeks of their contract and 25 miles of the Kaiserkeller and if they did it would not be safe for them to walk with in 25 miles of his club.

Regardless of his warnings the boys left for Eckhorns club and as word got back to Koschmider he was not pleased. The next morning the boys were dragged out of bed by several nasty Reeperbahn policemen and taken to the station.

Koschmider had tipped off the police that George was under age (not yet 18) and it was illegal to be in any club on the Reeperbahn past curfew. In fact none of the band members had any legal work papers. George was ordered to leave in 24 hours.

Stu and Astrid took him to the train station that night and in an unusual show of feelings and heart break, George limped back to Liverpool with his tail between his legs. A heart broken young adult. With a year on the Reeperbahn, the boys were much more mature beyond their age.

A couple days after his departure Paul and Pete Best went back to Bambi Kino to grab what little possessions they had left. They did not believe there belongs would still be there. In a show of kindness Koschmider choose not to throw them out. But the two boys could not leave well enough alone.

They gathered their belonging from behind the screen and decided to set the dry drapes on fire and run for it. No mention to anyone in the theater that it was on fire. Before much damage was done, it was extinguished before near disaster. But suspicion was set in and the police could not help notice "The Beatles" written in carbon from the flame of a candle.

The boys were now under suspicion of arson to the Bambi Keno and were hauled into the Reeperbahn police station for questioning. Thanks to a second show of undeserved kindness From Bruno Koschmider there were no charges and Paul and Pete were ordered out of the country. They were on the next flight out with out Pete's drum kit and most of their luggage.

John and Stu were the last to standing and there was not much point staying. The trip had taken it toll as for as all were concerned.

John scraped together enough money for a train ride back home. Stu who had a fever and a touch of tonsillitis would fly home, only to return next month to marry Astrid.

The boys where home for almost a full month before they bothered to contact one another. They all left Hamburg worn out and deleted. What was about to happen next no one could have anticipated. They all assume to disband at this point.

No one in the band thought about what the endless hours of jamming, improving and being forced to learn new songs had done for them. Their standard repertoire was no longer enough to keep the audience entertained for the long stretch, s they were required to perform. On the Reeperbahn a strange transformation had taken place.

The boys where now polishing musicians and where not prepared for the pandemonium that was about to unfold before their very eyes.

Once each member of the band had been home they went about their business and did not bother to communicate with each other for almost a full month. When they finally got together and performed in front of the home fans it was a whole new band.

The long grueling hours had matured these amateur musicians into polished professionals. They were now in demand to fill the local clubs on a full time basis. This was a huge stepping stone to the next level for the Beatles.

It would not be long before they would be in the studio recording singles and trying to crack the coveted number one spot on the charts.

What Makes a Person Intelligent?

In traditional intelligence theories when one is asked the question “What makes a person intelligent?” the most common responses will often note a person’s ability to solve problems, utilize logic, and think critically. These typical traits of intelligence are sometimes grouped together under the heading “raw intelligence”. A person’s intelligence, traditionally speaking, is contained in their intellect. In other words, how we each understand, evaluate or respond to external stimuli, regardless as to whether it is a mathematical problem or anticipation of an opponent’s next move in a game, is our collective intelligence. Our intelligence therefore, is our individual, collective ability to act or react in a continually changing environment.

The principal problem in traditional intelligence theories is that they promote “fractured learning”. Many educational reformers have clearly stated that “taking tests merely shows that a student is skilled at taking tests”. At best, traditional tests focus on only about one tenth of an individual’s intellect. Note that Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison, two of history’s most famous examples of brilliant minds, were terrible at taking traditional tests, therefore terrible at “school” in general. Multiple Intelligences theory then, demonstrates that the ability to take traditional tests is almost entirely in the realm of the Logical – Mathematical

intelligence. This intelligence will be detailed later along with the Interpersonal intelligence, which imparts in some students the ability to second guess a teacher’s structuring of a test. Traditional IQ tests predict school performance with considerable accuracy, but they are only an indifferent predictor of performance in a profession after formal schooling.

In an interesting but controversial study conducted during the 1960’s by Biologist Marion Diamond, of the University of California at Berkeley, two sets of rats were raised in different environments; One set had toys to play with, playmates to romp with and a roomy box that was kept clean and fresh. The second set was put in solitary confinement; all alone in a much smaller cage with no toys to enjoy. After several weeks, Diamond measured the size of each rat’s cerebral cortex, the brain area which is responsible for higher nerve functions. The rats in the sociable, clean and stimulating environment grew brains bigger than the rats with the impoverished surroundings. “Does the enriched environment increase the dimensions of the brain, and does the impoverished environment decrease the dimensions of the brain?”, asked Diamond. “The answer, very clearly, is YES.” Similar results were replicated with cats, monkeys and later with humans. So a stimulating, enriched learning environment is crucial to mental development. If we likewise incorporate the varying student intelligences in our teaching activities, our success as well as our students success, will be markedly improved. That each of us possess all the intelligences, that they can each be developed further, that these multiple intelligences work together in a complex manner, and that there are, in fact, many different ways to be “intelligent” are inclusive in a study by Armstrong. Here briefly, in retrospect, are eight of the major intelligences of Howard Gardener’s theory and their relative traits:

Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence:

The capacity to use words effectively, either orally or in writing. It is highly developed in story-tellers, orators, politicians, poets, playwrights, editors, language teachers and journalists. Students with a high degree of this intelligence think in words; learn by listening, reading, and verbalizing. They enjoy writing, like books, records, and tapes, and have a good memory for verse, lyrics, or trivia. Getting into discussions, telling jokes and debating are also characteristics of this intelligence. Maya Angelou is strong in this intelligence.

Visual-Spatial Intelligence:

The ability to perceive the world accurately and to perform transformations upon one’s perceptions. This is highly developed in guides, interior designers, architects, artists, fashion designers and inventors. Students with a high degree of spatial intelligence think in images and pictures, like mazes and jigsaw puzzles. They like to draw and design things, and enjoy films, slides, videos, diagrams, maps, charts. The daydreamers and those who may have strong opinions about such things as colors that go together, textures that are appropriate and pleasing and decorating are included in this intelligence. Pablo Picasso was strong in this intelligence.

Musical – Rhythmic Intelligence: The capacity to perceive, discriminate, transform, and express musical forms is most highly developed in musical performers, music aficionados, and music critics. Students with a high degree of musical intelligence learn through rhythm and melody, play a musical instrument, or May need music to study. They notice nonverbal sounds in the environment: the chirp of a cricket, rain on the roof, varying traffic patterns, and usually learn things more easily if sung, tapped out, or whistled. These people love music and rhythmic patterns and can often reproduce a melody or rhythmic pattern after hearing it only once. Various sounds, tones, and rhythms may have a visible effect on them (that is, you can see a change in facial expressions, body movement, or emotional responses). They enjoy singing and listening to a wide variety of music, and are often quite skilled at mimicking sounds, language accents, and others’ speech patterns, and recognizing different musical instruments in a composition. Paul McCartney is strong in this intelligence.

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence:

The capacity to use numbers effectively and to reason well. This intelligence is highly developed in mathematicians, tax accountants, statisticians, scientists, computer programmers, and logicians. Students with a high degree of this intelligence often reason things out logically and clearly; look for abstract patterns and relationships; frequently like brain teasers, logical puzzles, and strategy games. They also like to use computers and to classify and categorize. These people think conceptually and abstractly and are able to see patterns and relationships that others often miss. They like to experiment, solve puzzles and other problems, ask cosmic questions and think. They love the challenge of complex problems to solve and always have a logical rationale or argument for what they are doing or thinking. Albert Einstein was strong in this intelligence.

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence: Consists of expertise in using one’s whole body to express ideas and feelings, and facility in using ones hands to produce or transform things. A highly developed intelligence in actors, mimes, athletes, dancers, sculptors, mechanics, and surgeons. Students with a high degree of bodily-kinesthetic intelligence process knowledge through bodily sensations; move, twitch, tap, or fidget while sitting in a chair or at a desk and learn by touching, manipulating, and moving. They typically like role playing and creative movement and generally like physical games of all kinds and demonstrating how to do something. They communicate well through body language and other physical gestures. They can often perform a task only after seeing someone else do it. They find it difficult to sit still for a long time and are easily bored if they are not actively involved in what is going on around them. Michael Jordan is strong in this intelligence.

Interpersonal Intelligence:

The ability to perceive and make distinctions in the moods, intentions, motivations, and feelings of other people. This Intelligence can include sensitivity to facial expressions, voice, and gestures, as well as the ability to respond effectively to such cues. Students with a high degree of interpersonal intelligence understand and care about people; like to socialize; learn more easily by relating and cooperating and are good at teaching other students. These people learn through person-to-person interaction. They generally have lots of friends; show a great deal of empathy for other people and understanding of different points of view. They are skilled at drawing others out in a discussion, conflict resolution and mediation when people are in radical

opposition to each other. Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi were strong in this intelligence.

Intra-personal Intelligence:

Self-knowledge and the ability to act adaptively on the basis of that knowledge define this group. This is an intelligence which can include having an accurate picture of one’s strengths and limitations, awareness of one’s moods and motivations, and the capacity for self-discipline. Students with a high degree of this intelligence seem to be self-motivating; need their own quiet space; may march to the beat of a different drummer and tend to learn more easily with independent study, self-paced instruction, individualized projects and games.

These people like to work alone and sometimes shy away from others. They are self-reflective and self-aware and thus tend to be in tune with their inner feelings, values, beliefs, and thinking processes. They are frequently bearers of creative wisdom and insight, are highly intuitive, and are inwardly motivated rather than needing external rewards to keep them going. They are often strong-willed, self-confident, and definite, well-thought-out opinions on almost any issue (although they are sometimes off-the-wall). Other people will often come to them for advice and counsel, but others will sometimes view them as distant or weird. Emily Dickinson and Stephen King are examples of this intelligence.

Naturalist Intelligence:

Environmental knowledge and the ability to identify and categorize plants, animals and nature on the basis of that knowledge. The Naturalist Intelligence can include having an accurate picture of the ambient environment, awareness of the interrelationship of natural elements, and the capacity for self-analysis of these elements. It is found most highly developed in archeologists, animal handlers, animal trainers, veterinarians, biologists, racehorse jockeys, zoologists, environmentalists, wilderness guides and naturalists. Students who have a high degree of the naturalist intelligence seem to be nature-oriented, seek to be outdoors or in the elements and learn more easily with nature-related study and environmental projects and activities. They like to collect items from nature, study them, and group them. They tend to be aware of subtleties in appearance, texture, and sounds that those weaker in this intelligence may not grasp. Charles Darwin, Jacques Cousteau, and John James Audubon were strong in this intelligence.

One of the great promises of Multiple Intelligences theory in education is that it will help us to find individual pathways into and out of our students’ minds. Recent advances in educational psychology and research in applied MI theory offer educators a real possibility of developing the potential of all students. Both educators and students should derive from Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence theory that all people are different and learn differently, and that we should respect, value, and nurture that diversity.

Top Tips For Overcoming Fear: How To 'Unslump' Yourself

Knowing how to overcome fear is a must because there is nothing less attractive than someone full of fear, lacking confidence and in full-blown scarcity mode. I really do not like it when fear comes to visit but unfortunately when we head off on a journey into unfamiliar and unchartered waters it can be a regular visitor, dropping in at the most unexpected and unwelcome of times. Right when you were just making progress, or having such fun, fear comes knocking at the door and stops you in your tracks.

I had a visit a few weeks ago and it completely floored me. One day I was heading full throttle towards my dreams and all was well in my world. The next thing I knew, I was full of fear that manifested itself as anxiety, procrastination, overwhelm and depression. In a matter of hours everything shifted and I felt paralyzed by fear.

Fear blocks EVERYTHING; your confidence and pizzazz, your powers of manifestation and it can be such negative energy. It is a detractor and if you get stuck in it, it can be such a downward spiral. It may manifest itself as feelings of inadequacy, confusion, worry or a million other thoughts or behaviors, so you must learn how to pull yourself out of the funk and break the pattern.

So what helps you move forward from the slump? Here are some of the things I have found work for me; like my own personal first aid kit. I always get started on them immediately and work through as many of them as I need, until I start to feel a shift.

The most important step is to recognize it for what it is. Recognizing that you are in 'fear' and that fear is part of the journey is the first step. I absolutely love Dr Seuss' book 'Oh The Places You'll Go'. One of my gorgeous friends and mentors Lorna Patten gave it to me as a going away present and I find it really speaks to the journey we are on and the ups and downs we will face. I pull it out regularly and it helps me laugh at fear.

Dr Seuss 'Oh The Places You'll Go' Excerpt

You'll be on your way up!
You'll be seeing great sights!
You'll join the high fliers
who soar to great heights …

EXCEPT when you do not
Because sometimes you will not

I'm sorry to say so
but, sadly it's true
that Bang-ups
and Hang-ups
can happen to you …

You'll come down from the Lurch
with an unsuitable bump.
And the chances are, then,
that you'll be in a dump.
And when you're in a slump,
you're not in for much fun.
Un-slumping yourself is not easily done …

Top Tips For Unslumbing Yourself …

1. Talking to yourself. Yes, weird I know, but it really helps to acknowledge what you are feeling and then to ask yourself why? Such as I feel afraid … why? What am I afraid of? Gather all the facts; try to talk to your rational self. A lot of the time writing things out for clarity can help.

2. Take action. I always find it helps to do something to feel in-action. It can give back your confidence, can help you get clarity, find a solution to the initial problem and just feel less overwhelmed to be working on it.

3. Talk it through with a few trusted friends or collections. I know it can be really hard to reach out when you are stuck in the slump and you just want to crawl into a cave. Try though, as it often helps to bring some perspective to the situation especially if you are catastrophizing and worrying unnecessarily.

4. Break things down into bite size chunks. We may try to swallow the elephant (problem) whole but that will only make things worse. Write a list of all the small things you can do and start with just one.

5. Remember 'this too shall pass'. Fear does not usually hang around more than a few days if you work through it, acknowledging your feelings and finding what you need to help you move forward.

6. Allow yourself to sit with fear because sometimes it's necessary. Sometimes an alarm or warning signs for us to be aware of something. Do not pressure yourself to 'get over and on with it'. Sometimes it is healthy to acknowledge the fear and be okay with where you are and what you are feeling in that moment.

7. Be gentle with yourself. Take a break and change your environment. A walk in the park, taking the laptop to a cafe, heading to the beach or having a massage. Now is not the time to beat yourself up.

8. Embrace it! I have so embracted pain and discomfort as part of the journey to success that it is like seeing an opponent in a fight approach. I can plan for it, be prepared and figure out how to deal with it Wrestling with fear can still feel painful but when you've prepared you can almost laugh at it and know that it will pass as long as you work through it.

In my experience it's when we step up and get comfortable feeling uncomfortable that life-changing experiences occurs. We grow stronger and richer for it, as the quotation from the book The Prophet says:

"Your pain is the breaking shell that encloses understanding."

A Guide to Fruits that Increase Testosterone

Diet and Testosterone….

Are you searching for ways to boost your testosterone levels naturally? Have you looked at your diet?

The following is a collection of tips from doctors, scientists and fitness experts about a healthy diet for optimum testosterone production, including lots of foods and even fruits that increase testosterone production.

Testosterone is produced by the body and is not found in the food we eat; however, certain foods lead to testosterone production and better blood circulation, which carries the testosterone to the appropriate organ, while other foods should be avoided.

So foods that encourage testosterone production may be called — for lack of a better term — testosterone food sources.

Testosterone Food Sources

Include:

Zinc: The best source of dietary zinc is meat. The best meat choice is the white meat of chicken. The best fish choice is salmon. For vegetarians, choose peanuts or beans. No fruits that increase testosterone in this category, because plant sources of zinc are harder for the body to use and are not good testosterone food sources.

Vitamin A: essential for the normal function of the reproductive organs. Lots of fruits that increase testosterone in this category: apples, blueberries, cantaloupe, pineapple and citrus fruits, just to name a few. Other food sources of Vitamin A include fish (salmon, again), leafy greens (spinach) and brightly colored vegetables like tomatoes, red peppers and yellow squash.

Hope you like salmon, because other than being an excellent source of Vitamin A and zinc, as well as protein, fish oil is said to keep SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) levels lower. When testosterone runs into SHBG in the blood stream, it becomes attached to it, and then can’t interact with any of the body’s cells.

The net effect of testosterone that is attached to SHBG is the same as a lack of testosterone since it is prevented from having any impact on the body. Salmon might be your number one testosterone food source followed closely by oysters which are naturally rich in zinc.

Diet and Testosterone

Avoid:

The following foods are not testosterone friendly food and drink sources: fried foods, sugar and caffeine over stimulate the adrenals, which produce some testosterone. Over stimulating the adrenals leads to “adrenal exhaustion”, means they are not going to produce testosterone or anything else.

So a breakfast of hash browns, toast with jelly and coffee with cream and sugar would have pretty much everything in it that you want to AVOID if you are looking for testosterone food sources.

In conclusion, a healthy diet and testosterone production go hand in hand.

It is not possible to include here all of the good testosterone food sources or even all of the fruits that increase testosterone.

Consult a nutritionist or dietician for a personal plan that addresses your individual needs.

In the meantime, for breakfast tomorrow have an egg omelet (egg yolk contains cholesterol which testosterone is made from) with tomatoes and red peppers (sources of Vitamin A) and orange juice to drink. Follow that up with some alfalfa-sprout toast (alfalfa is said to be a sexual stimulant) and some fresh apples, pineapples or other fruits that increase testosterone and you are sure to have a good start to your day.
