Chiropractic Services and How They Help Remedy Back Pain

Over the past years, chiropractic has emerged as one of the most commonly utilized health care techniques, and its field has been more broadly recognized by medical organizations, particularly in the United States and Canada, as well as in Australia. Despite the many debates on whether chiropractic should be classified as a legitimate medical discipline or a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), it is seen to be most effective in treating and managing back pain.

Overview of Chiropractic

The principle of chiropractic is anchored on the belief that a person's overall health condition is heavily dependent on his musculoskeletal structure. Thus, if his spelling is properly aligned, a person will less likely experience headaches, neck and back pains, and other conditions associated with his musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors, then, advocated the use of noninvasive and nonsurgical techniques in dealing with said conditions. Instead of resorting to expensive, and sometimes traumatic, medical "under-the-knife" procedures, chiropractors employ manual and hands-on adjustment and manipulation of the spine, as well as certain joints and soft tissues to diagnose, treat and prevent musculoskeletal- related conditions. Because of this approach, chiropractic is often mistaken for physical therapy and even for general massage services.

It should be noted that chiropractors must first undergo a formal and professional degree and training in chiropractic before being able to provide services to patients. Some areas even require chiropractors to secure a license from the government. While they are authorized to adopt manual techniques, however, they are not allowed to prescribe medicines to their patients. Instead, they can only refer their patients to medical specialists such as orthopedic or a sports medicine doctor.

Chiropractic Services

A typical chiropractic clinic or center offers services that care for patients experiencing pain or discomfort in musculoskeletal regions, namely, the back, neck, head, arms and legs. While chiropractors focus more on treating said conditions, they also diagnose the cause of the pain and recommend a short-, medium-, or long-term program to address the same, depending on the nature and gravity of the patient's condition. Some chiropractors also offer on-site or home services for patients who can no longer travel to their clinic. Still, other chiropractors set up a free consultation hotline where they respond to chiropractic-related questions from individuals.

Management of Back Pain

Among the many conditions that chiropractors are able to manage, back pain seems to be the most common complaint of their patients. The question now is: How do chiropractors effectively treat back pain?

First, the chiropractor administers a detailed physical examination of the patient and takes into account his previous medical conditions, ailments or operations. After getting a clear and holistic picture of the patient's need, the chiropractor then maps out a treatment plan, which can either be a manual manipulation of the spine or of the muscles, or a combination of both. Spinal manipulation aims to enhance the structure and function of the spinal and nerve systems, while chiropractic mobilization targets muscles and joints to improve mobility and the motion capacity of the body. To ensure that all factors that may be contributors to back pain are eliminated or mitigated, chiropractors likewise give nutritional advice, and if necessary, recommend an exercise or rehabilitation program.

Since chiropractors do a hands-on technique, their manipulation is said to be more direct and zeroed in on the problem area. It is for this reason that chiropractors' services are often more cost-effective and sometimes even faster-acting than drugs, pain relievers and pain killers, or any other traditional medical procedure.

The Importance of Medical Scrubs

Many doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals wear medical scrubs to work. This type of medical uniform has been around for a while, but their appearance has changed a lot over the years. Scrubs come in a variety of stylish designs and colors and many employees enjoy wearing them to work.

These simple garments were created for sanitary and safety purposes. They were designed to help prevent the spread of infections and to protect employees from bodily fluids and chemicals. Surgeons and other medical staff members wore scrubs in the operating room. All medical professionals (who worked in the operating room) always scrubbed in for surgery, so that is where the term scrubs comes from.

Medical scrubs are very loose fitting, consisting of two pieces (a top and bottoms) and they are usually made from cotton and polyester. Years ago, you could only purchase them in white. The white represented cleanliness in the work environment. However, many surgeons and other medical professionals did not like white, because it was difficult to keep clean. Also, the white uniforms, along with the bright lights in the operating room, caused a lot of strain on the surgeon’s eyes. So, companies began making their surgical uniforms in green and blue. Later they became available in more colors such as pink and yellow.

Scrubs are made from durable material and they are affordable too. Today, they come in many different patterns and cuts and you can buy them from name brand companies such as Crest, Grey’s Anatomy, Dickies, Cherokee, Silky Scrubs and Landau.

Some employers or hospitals will purchase several pairs of medical scrubs for each employee. Other employers will require their employees to purchase their own uniform for work. In some cases the color-coded uniforms help patients and staff members to identify workers and departments at hospitals. One reason they have become so popular is because they are professional, yet casual and comfortable, making them easy to work in for long periods of time.

Medical scrubs have come a long way since they first hit stores. Today, medical workers can select a uniform to match their personality, interests and work environment. They come in a wide variety of colors plus hundreds of printed styles. Overall, most employees seem very pleased with wearing their scrubs.

Urgent Care – What Is It?

This is a health care service that is provided to those who have a medical condition or injury that requires medical attention. It is also less expensive to visit urgent care than going to the emergency room. Usually the medical care that is needed is within twenty-four hours after an injury has happened or you became sick. Urgent care is usually a clinic that is not attached to a hospital, but may be on the same grounds as the hospital. Many times patients who visit this type of clinician do have a regular physician but they can not get in that day to see their physician or it is after hours at their physician. If their medical illness or medical condition is not serious enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room they can choose to go to urgent care instead.

These types of medical clinics began to emerge in the 1970s and many times health insurance companies strongly encouraged their clients to use this walk-in clinic whenever they needed medical care and either did not have a regular physician or could not get into see them. The reason that they encouraged their clients to use them were because of the reduced cost. The patients could also have their conditions treated before they reach emergency status and a trip to the emergency room was needed. One example is if your child had a sore throat and it was treated within twenty-four hours it was very manageable and could be treated with medicine for the sore throat and maybe an antibiotic along with rest. If it was ignored it could become very serious, especially if it was on a weekend, and might require a trip to the emergency room.

Many of these are walk-in clinics operate on a first-come-first-served basis so if it is crowded you may have a bit of a wait. Some may require you to make an appointment but guarantee that you will be seen within twenty-four hours. Depending on the level of the urgent care facility these clinics can offer a variety of medical services. If it becomes necessary the urgent care facility can send you to the hospital emergency room. Urgent care can also perform some basic medical testing, including medical imaging like ultrasounds and x-rays for the purpose of diagnosing what your problem is. After you have been seen at urgent care you will be advised to make a follow-up visit with your regular physician in the next couple of days or come back if the condition becomes worse.

Homeopathy – A Holistic System of Medicine

o History of Homeopathy

o What is Homeopathy?

o Why Homeopathy?

History of Homeopathy

Homeopathy was discovered in Germany 200 years back by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann.

He was a M.D physician. However, he was getting disenchanted with the kind of treatment doctors gave patients in his days. Most of it involved purging, one way or another. Patients were given laxatives, emetics or were made to bleed by applying leeches, in an attempt to cure diseases. Hahnemann gave up his practice of medicine and worked as a chemist.

He was also a scholar fluent in 14 languages. So he started translating the original medical work while he was translating one of the work of a doctor he came across the detail that the bark of the Cinchona tree could cure malaria.

Having a scientific mind, he decided to experiment. He ate a little of Cinchona bark and noted it produced symptoms similar to malaria. He gave the same bark to few of his friends and relatives and they produced malaria like symptoms. But he went one step further whenever a patient came with malaria; administration of this bark cured the disease condition!

He continued experimenting with different medicinal substances. He noticed that those that produced symptoms similar to a disease were capable of treating the disease. He formulated the law: SIMILIA SIMILIBUS CURENTUR. (LIKE Cures LIKE).

Homeopathy was born!

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a specialized system of medicine developed by “Dr.Samuel Christian Frederic Hahnemann” based on the natural law of healing “Similia Similibus Curentar” which means likes are cured by likes.

“Homois” means like (Or similar) and “pathos” means suffering. Thus Homeopathy is a system of treating diseases by the administration of remedies which possess power of producing similar sufferings in a healthy being.

This law of Similars for curing has been in use since the time of Hippocrates, Father of medicine. But it was Dr.Samuel Hahnemann who developed it into a complete system of medicine enunciating the law and its application in 1810.

Why Homeopathy?

The above question comes to our mind when we are trying to switch off from one stream of medicine to another. We all know that every science has its positive aspects and its limitations.

Let’s see what Homeopathy has to offer to the suffering humanity. It is based on the principle of “Similia similibus curenter” i.e. “like cures like”.

Homeopathy is a Holistic method of treatment where the whole body and mind is taken into consideration not just the diseased part or organ or just a few symptoms. Every minute shift of health is noted down in the minutest details in the form of causation, sensation experienced. This is known as case taking.

After careful analysis and evaluation the medicine that suits the constitution is selected. The treatment is based on individualization depending upon constitution of each individual.

Homeopathic medicine helps the system to bring back the lost balance when it is in a diseased state. When the right homeopathic medicine is administered it stimulates the body and produces an action, which is known as the primary action, and then the body will take care of the disease this is known as the secondary action.

Homeopathic medicine acts at the level Psycho neuro endocrinal axis and brings back the imbalanced disease state to a balanced state of health.

The best effect is seen when children are put on homeopathy. It allows the child to blossom like a flower. They will lead a healthier life and even the hereditary tendencies which are carried can be minimized.

The homeopathic medicines can be administered in a very simple way and because of its sweet taste kids take the medicines without any fuss.

In chronic diseases after the remedy is administered it will act at a very deep level and will help the individual to fight the disease. We can get good results if the case is properly managed and if the patient reports at the beginning of the sickness and gives the original unmodified picture of the illness.

In acute conditions after the medicine is administered it will bring back the lost harmony in a rapid gentle way without producing any complications.

Homeopathic medicine can be very useful during epidemics. The remedy that is selected on the symptoms that are characteristic during the epidemic is known as the “Genus Epidemicus”.

This genus epidemicus when given to the people where there is an outbreak it will help the people in not contracting the epidemic disease. For e.g. Cholera, Influenza, Plague etc.

Homeopathy is the only system of medicine which works as a preventive and helps the patient to remain healthy and not get affected by the environment. In homeopathy there are medicines, which can be given as a prophylactic medicine that will help the individual to prevent the disease when there is an outbreak of certain diseases.

For e.g. If there are 2 children in a house and one is suffering from say Chicken pox in order to prevent the other child from getting the infection if he is given the indicated remedy he will not contract that disease or even if he contracts the disease it will be in a very mild form..

Homeopathy is a system of medicine where the remedies are prepared from the natural substances that are obtained from the Plant Kingdom, Mineral kingdom and Animal kingdom. These substances undergo a process of potentisation and serial dilutions. This process releases the latent power of the medicine. The more the substance is diluted the more is the power of that drug. The power is known as the “Potency”.

The homeopathic medicines do not have side effects when they are used judicially. As the action is at the dynamic level and drug substance is minimum. Homeopathy can be used for a wide range of diseases with success if practiced in the right way.

Let us make a healthy harmonious living possible through Homeopathy…

Healing Yourself With Protein Rich Plasma

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a cutting-edge non-surgical technique that is now available for use as an in-office procedure. Years ago, it was thought that platelets functioned solely to form blood clots – or, more specifically, to bind to each other at the sight of bleeding in order to form a "plug" to stop the flow of blood. Recent research has shown, however, that the platelet has a far greater role in the healing process than initially thought. When platelets aggregate at the sight of an injury, they not only form the plug to stem the boring but they also release growth factors. These growth factors, also known as cytokines, aid in the healing of injured tissues.

PRP Therapy: The Process

PRP therapy requires only a small amount of normal blood from the patient (approximately 20 cc's). This blood sample is placed into a centrifuge in the office and is spun for approximately fifteen minutes. The final product is a highly concentrated platelet rich gel, which, when applied to injured tissue, accelerates the normal healing process.

On the day of the treatment, the patient is imprisoned in the exam chair and blood is taken from his or her arm. Once the PRP gel is ready for implantation, the area being treated is infected with local anesthesia after which there is no further discomfort from the procedure.

To insure the accuracy of the placement of the platelet rich gel a diagnostic ultrasound is used. Then a needle attached to a syringe containing the gel is guided by the ultrasound into the areas of injury. After the procedure, a simple Band-Aid is applied. Because there is no surgical incision involved there is little or no post procedural pain.

The Science

When the PRP gel is applied to the area of injury, the platelets are activated to produce proteins capable of stimulating cellular growth, proliferation and cellular differentiation called growth factors. By concentrating the number of platelets found in normal blood by 10 times, the concentration of growth factors in the area is equally enhanced. This is significant in terms of the healing process because growth factors are responsible for attracting stem cells that will eventually become new tendon, bone or fascia.

The procedure is very safe. Since the blood is drawn and processed immediately in the same facility there is no chance of contamination or blood from another patient. Also since the injection consist of blood from the same patient begin treated there is no chance of allergy or drug reactions. Additionally, platelets have a natural antibiotic quality so there is very little chance of infection.

In my practice, by far the most common ailment treated with PRP is the painful heel condition known as plantar fasciitis. However, I have also successfully treated tendonitis, partial tendon ruptures and inflammatory bone conditions.

PRP versus Cortisone Injections

When PRP is compared to cortisone injections for inflammatory conditions there are many striking differences. Cortisone injections result in immediate pain relief. PRP injections do not act as quickly. PRP procedures take longer to deliver results because the growth factors take time to grow the new tissue. However, the platelets release the growth factors that attract the stem cells and then produce repaired "new" tissue. The cortisone reduces the inflammation immediately but actually causes tissue weakening and damage.

So the choice between cortisone and PRP comes down to fast relieve with potential tissue damage or actual new and repaired tissue that takes longer to treat pain. This new innovative and cutting-edge technique is just the beginning of the new branch of science known as "orthobiologics". The day is fast approaching when medical science will be able to create new parts to cure the ailments and injuries that plague our bodies. "Protein Rich Plasma" is one of the modalities that are currently available to help the body accelerate the healing process and create new, repaired, healthy tissue.

Hyperthyroidism Symptoms

The symptoms of hyperthyroidism can mimic other health problems. Often, a person with hyperthyroidism will be diagnosed with a heart, a depressive condition, or a digestive disorder before discovering that they have an overactive thyroid gland.

One of the most common symptoms of hyperthyroidism is sudden, unexpected weight loss even though appetite and food consumption remains the same or is increased. Usually, the patient will complain that they "just can not gain any weight even though I'm eating more."

Tachycardia, or rapid heartbeat exceeding 100 beats per minute, is also a common symptom of hyperthyroidism and can occur with the feeling of pounding of the heart ( palpitations ) or an irregular heartbeat ( arrhythmia ).

Other Common Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism:

  • Anxiety , depression , and brain fog or loss of mental clarity, are often experienced as a symptom of hyperthyroidism.
  • Changes in bowels habits, especially diarrhea and frequent bowel movements, have been reported. Abdominal bloating may also be an associated symptom of hyperthyroidism.
  • Changes in menstrual patterns in women have been identified as a symptom of hyperthyroidism. There are some indications that the sex hormones, testosterone and estrogen, levels in men can be affected by a thyroid disorder. " Low T " problems, for instance, may result from the body's inability to convert testosterone to estrogen. Thyroid conditions can interfere in hormonal conversions.
  • Fatigue and weakness is a commonly associated symptom of hyperthyroidism and other thyroid and autoimmune conditions.
  • If the thyroid gland enlarges as a result of hyperthyroidism, it can appear as a swapping ( goiter ) at the base of the neck. Sometimes this swelling is not clearly visible but wearing ties and scarves around the neck may be uncomfortable.
  • Increased susceptibility to heat has been recognized as a hyperthyroidism symptom.
  • Two signs associated with hyperthyroidism are dry, thinning hair and skin .

Why is hyperthyroidism overlooked as the source of many common symptoms?

There are three reasons that hyperthyroidism fails to be diagnosed. It is either not considered in a differential diagnosis, the sufferer experiences the symptoms of hyperthyroidism intermittently and may wait to seek treatment, or it is under-diagnosed.

One reason that hyperthyroidism is under-diagnosed can be blamed on lab test interpretation. When a lab value is categorized as within a "normal" range, this means that this lab range number is derived from an average of those having blood work in the past year. This "normal" range is determined using the lab values from supposedly sick people who have had their blood drawn. Obviously, there are flaws with this system so many doctors use functional ranges when interpreting their patient's blood work. This takes a little more effort on the doctor's part because it is not as simple as just looking at either the results are in the normal column or not. Finding a doctor who is cognizant of these functional lab ranges is vital for proper management of thyroid disorders.

Another reason hyperthyroidism is overlooked is that the sufferer may exhibit symptoms similar to other disease processes. For example, a person who complains of persistent diarrhea may be diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. Another patient may express a depressive disorder and be under care with psychotropic medication. Sometimes, once a label has been given to a set of symptoms the investigation into other causative factors will end. It is then up to the sufferer to continue looking for other diagnostic and treatment options.

There are also many cases where the symptoms of hyperthyroidism will come and go. The person may disregard these symptoms until their condition deteriorates.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a condition that exhibits fluctuating thyroid symptoms with bouts of both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Hashimoto's was discovered over a century ago but still remains relatively unknown to the American public. It is an autoimmune condition and is characterized by the immune system attacking and slowly destroying the thyroid gland. During an immune system attack, the damaged thyroid gland releases too much thyroid hormone into the body causing metabolism to rev up. This results in the common symptoms of hyperthyroidism ie a fast heart rate, weight loss, etc. When the attack eases, there is less of the thyroid gland left to make hormones so metabolic drops. This causes decreased metabolism. Lab tests will only show what is happening in the body at the time the blood is drawn. Lab values in a patient with Hashimoto's will fluctuate depending on what is happening at that time with the immune system's attack on the thyroid gland. This can make it difficult for an inexperienced medical practitioner to diagnoseose Hashimoto's based on routine bloodwork alone. Specific lab testing can confirm a diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

What are the causes of hyperthyroidism?

There are many causative factors for hyperthyroidism. The most common cause is an autoimmune condition called Graves' disease.

What is Graves' disease ?

Graves' disease is another autoimmune condition and the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. It occurs when the immune system commandeers or hijacks the role of the brain's pituitary gland which normally regulates the thyroid gland's hormone production. The antibody linked to Graves' disease is called thyrotropin receptor antibody or TRAb. TRAb can override the pituitary gland and cause too much production of thyroid hormone resulting in hyperthyroidism.

What are the symptoms of Graves' disease?

The symptoms of Graves' disease reflect the production of too much thyroid hormone being produced. Someone with Graves' disease may display a fine tremor of the hands or fingers. They may also experience warm, clammy skin or increased perspiration. Diarrhea is a common complaint along with frequent loose bowel movements. Some symptoms that are shared by both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid conditions include:

  • Fatigue
  • Menstrual cycle changes
  • Reduced libido

There are some overt symptoms of Graves' disease that are pathognomonic or peculiar to this condition. Rarely, people develop Graves' dermopathy which is characterized by thick, red patches of skin usually on the legs and feet. There is also Graves' opthalmopathy which causes bulging eyes, dry / red eyes, excessive tearing, fixed stare, puffy eyelids, pressure or pain around the eyes, light sensitivity, and double vision. More rare symptoms and signs include blurry vision and corneal ulcers.

It seems like the most common causes for both hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease) and hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) are based in a body's faulty immune system. How can the immune system be treated and can the symptoms of hyperthyroidism be relieved?

The immune system as well as the affected systems of the body can be supported and the symptoms of thyroid conditions can be improved. There is a branch of healthcare called functional medicine that involves all the different functions of the body. By detecting weaknesses in these functions through lab testing, the body's systems can be supported with treatment resulting in improved health.

In practice, we are seeing many more patients, both male and female, with thyroid disorders in general. What is most disconcerting is the younger ages of these patients. Whereas thirty years ago middle-age women were the group most affected, now many seeking treatment are in their teens and 20's.

Is Addiction an Incurable Disease?

Call addiction what you wish – a condition, disease or a disorder. I have no problem with those labels. What I do have a problem with is every Tom, Dick and Harry in the addiction treatment industry insisting that addiction an “incurable” disease. Terminal cancer is an incurable disease. Addiction is entirely curable. I know this to be true, because I’m a cured alcoholic and there are millions of others like me.

So, why does the addiction treatment profession refer to addiction as an incurable disease? Well, for one thing, it’s good for business. Addiction treatment is a multi-billion dollar industry. Like any other corporate entity involving millions of dollars, there is a vested interest for many treatment centers to keep people coming back. During my own time spent in rehab, I was shocked to learn that many of my fellow patients had been admitted to rehab hospitals three or more times without success.

Labeling addiction as an incurable disease also allows a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. If every patient believes he or she suffers from the same incurable disease, then everyone can agree that lifelong abstinence is the only solution. The truth is, people vary. While it’s certainly true that one drink will cause some alcoholics to spin out of control, others can and do learn how to control their drinking. That’s because addiction is a disease of choice. I don’t mean to imply that every addict chooses to become one. In fact, nearly every addiction is driven by other forces, such as childhood trauma or other forms of abuse the addict has suffered in the past. Dependency on alcohol or drugs is more often a symptom of deeper issues, as a sneeze is to a cold virus. When referring to addition a disease of choice, it means each of us has the power to learn how to control our addiction. Unlike terminal cancer, we can choose our own fate. We can choose to get better, or not.

Although my entry into rehab was voluntary, I didn’t enjoy it, to say the least, and had no intention of repeating the experience. I’d learn how to beat addiction or die trying. Either way, rehab wasn’t going to be a revolving door for me, and I decided to pay close attention to every aspect of treatment. My fellow addicts and I learned a lot in thirty days. We attended group therapy sessions on a daily basis, in order to learn the issues that drove our addiction. We were taught the importance of surrendering our own willpower to our higher power’s will for us. We learned terms like denial, sobriety and emotional maturity. The counselors repeatedly reminded us that any person, place or situation that might affect our sobriety must be avoided at all costs in the early days of recovery, or relapse would be the result.

So far, so good, I thought. These concepts made sense and were useful tools in learning to beat addiction. It wasn’t until our counselor informed us that every addict was suffering from an incurable disease that I began to question the program. He assured us that no addict could ever be cured and that our only hope was in learning to manage our disease. According to the counselor, the answer involved attending lifelong 12 Step meetings and finding a sponsor to watch over us. We would also need to rid ourselves of old drinking friends and never attend any social gathering where alcohol was being consumed. We were told that once an addict, always an addict. We were quite simply too weak and fragile to fend for ourselves.

I’d entered rehab with the idea that we were there to learn how to beat addiction in 30 days or less. Why else would a 30-day inpatient program designed to teach addicts how to overcome addiction even exist? The notion that addiction was an incurable disease had never occurred to me. If it had, I would never have devoted a month of my life to a treatment program, only to be told my disease was incurable. I disagreed and expressed my concerns. Our counselor replied that the alternative was relapse and an early grave, period. He added that the choice was mine to make and he didn’t care either way. A few days later, during group therapy, he announced that my attitude was not conducive to the other addicts’ recovery and ordered me to pack my suitcase and leave.

I left rehab in much the same way I’d arrived – still determined and still an addict, but with one difference. Rehab gave me the basic knowledge I needed to beat addiction without attending 12 Step meetings or buying into the belief that addiction is an incurable disease. Several weeks later I discovered a way to beat addiction using three simple steps anyone can learn. Today, I don’t have to avoid social gatherings where alcohol is served, and can take alcohol or leave it, although I nearly always choose the latter. I’m not a recovering alcoholic, but a former alcoholic.

Relieving Arthritis Pain Safely and Naturally

A lot of the factors causing arthritis occur naturally. For instance, the most common cause, aging, leads to glucosamine depletion in one of joints which hampers the normal production and health of cartilage that could lead to osteoarthritis. Another factor is one's weight. Obesity could result in some arthritic conditions on weight-bearing joints. Another form of arthritis called arthritis spondylitis which affects one's backbone has been traced back to a deficiency in water intake.

So, how can common conditions of arthritis be treated? Seeing your physician for diagnosis plays a key role in the treatment. Depending on the type and severity of pain one is enduring, treatment may consist of minimal pain relievers, to more powerful NSAIDS, and occasional surgery. Diagnosis plays a key role in the treatment.

Natural Treatments

Some mild to moderate forms of arthritis can best be treated initially with exercise and a proper diet. A guided and monitored exercise program aims to strengthen one's joints so that it does not fall vulnerable to future arthritis especially when arthritis seems to be chronic. For people with weight problems, regular exercise not only helps strengthen their joints but would also help keep the extra and unnecessary weight off. Regular, moderate exercise that does not put undue stress on the affected joint can be beneficial. One can start by walking for 20 minutes daily and gradually increasing the distance or time. Other forms of cardiovascular exercise such as swimming and cycling are very effective as well and will not only strengthen the joints but the heart and lungs as well. On the other hand, a proper diet will work hand in hand with exercise and can potentially prevent diseases associated with fats and cholesterol build-up.

Alternative but safe treatment

An alternative treatment for arthritis that has been proven to be more effective than NSAIDS in treating moderate to severe pain associated with osteoarthritis is glucosamine supplements. There are literally hundreds of brands of these supplements, and choosing one that will deliver what it promises in an unregulated industry can be confusing. One of the more popular and trusted brands is Syn-flex Premium Liquid Glucosamine. Glucosamine supplements such as Synflex, assisted in rehabilitating damaged cartilage, improves mobility and reduces infection in joint affected areas. Synflex uses a pharmaceutical quality glucosamine and in its liquid form, you'll get maximum absorption and rapid pain relief. As mentioned before, arthritis can be caused by the normal process of aging while they naturally-occurring production of glucosamine in one's body slows down causing an imbalance between the overuse and recovery of joints.

These supplements help stimulate the healing of damaged cartilage with ingredients such as glucosamine HCL, glucosamine sulfate, shark cartilage, and chondroitin sulfate. Not only that, as stated before, these supplements have been known to treat the pain caused by arthritis without the side effects and dangers of common NSAIDS or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The latest study by "The New England Journal of Medicine" released in early 2006, shown that glucosamine chondroitin, (the same found in Syn-flex) reduced arthritis pain in those suffering moderate to severe joint pain more effectively than Celebrex. That's quite an eye opener to its effectiveness in treating osteoarthritis. Using natural substances that help heal, instead of masking pain, has helped the glucosamine industry explode in sales. Synflex Premium Liquid Glucosamine has proven itself to be a leader if not the leading seller of liquid glucosamine products, with world wide distribution.

Are Chinese Women the New "Trophy Wives"?

It is a fact. Everywhere you look, more and more rich foreign guys are marrying Chinese women, especially in places with a dense Chinese population, like in the US. In cities like Los Angeles and New York it is common to see Chinese women shopping in expensive brand stores with their mixed children. So, what is it that got these guys ignoring all the skinny busty blondes and pursuing Chinese girls?

There are probably multiple answers to this question, but one that seems to come up over and over again is the fact that Chinese women tend to care more for their families. In these uncertain days, when every year seems to bring about a new financial crisis, more and more western women are investing time in their careers, while putting their families a little aside. Western men, in the other hand, have been watching helplessly as their women slowly take over their role as being the sole financial support of the household. The truth still remains: men enjoy having a wife to look after them, to look after the children and to keep things running around the house. Knowing that they have a wife that depends on them, gives them a feeling of dominance, which just makes them feel a little bit more like a man.

The last decade has brought about the rise of women to power. Never before have so many women attended universities and occupied important governmental and corporate positions. Western women love to boast the fact that they are financially independent, because to them it is almost like coming out from years of reclusion and finally being able to see the sunlight. Its like showing off the prize for winning a long and strenuous battle. What women didn´t really count on all these years, is that you may be able to change the way society thinks, but you can´t change the laws of nature.

It is a fact that women love to feel secure. When looking for a partner, most women will even put financial security ahead of many other aspects and this is something that they do even unconsciously. Even those women who have a thriving career and are completely financially secure, will not allow themselves to marry or even fall in love with a man who earns less than them or who has an inferior education. Not to mention the old saying that women love guys with expensive cars and pockets full of money. It´s not about the steel shaped structure in form of an expensive car they love so much. It´s not about the greenish colored rectangular piece of paper with dollar signs printed on it. For women, it´s all about the sense of security and confidence, which these objects are able to bring them.

In this scenario, where the figure of the male provider is coming to an end, Chinese women have come to fill a gap. Most adult Chinese women today were raised by very traditional parents, who taught them the importance of being a good wife and taking care of her husband. Being a good wife is an important part of Chinese culture and most Chinese women are willing to make great sacrifices for their families and for their marriage. Tradition will heavily influence even Chinese women who have a higher education and are very well capable of leading a financially secure life of her own. For wealthy western men, who already possess everything, but a caring wife, it is the perfect match.

Another reason why more and more wealthy guys are showing off their Chinese wives, is the simple fact that Asian women possess a “quiet” beauty, which does not require them to spend hours in the gym or getting thousands of facials done. They also seem to age much less than white women, which gives an older man the feeling of being with a much younger girl without having to deal with all the age difference related issues. Wrapping it all up, Chinese women are becoming popular, because they are easier to please and are not ashamed of being (or feeling) dependent on their husbands or boyfriends.

Traditional Treatments and Cures

For mild psoriasis, there are many topical treatments, both by prescription and over the counter. Moisturizers, lotions, creams, ointments and shampoos are available and have been proven effective. Moderate to severe psoriasis, however requires a more aggressive treatment. In addition to topical treatments, the patient may be prescribed phototherapy or light therapy. They may also be prescribed systemic medications which are administrated either by injection orally.

Alternative Treatments and Cures

Many people believe that treating the root of the problem instead of the symptoms will cure psoriasis. There are many people who make very impressive claims that a raw food diet, a gluten free dies and other similar diets can relate and even cure the condition. Uropathy and autoimmune urine therapy are two more alternative therapies that are getting great reviews. These therapies involve the patient drinking their own urine. There is a great deal if literature on the topic and many who have tried it claim it works wonders. In some cases, with these types of therapies, the condition will get worse before it gets better. This is referred to as a healing crisis.

What's New

There are several new therapies that are being tried. One involves the vitamin D3, taken orally. It is also called calcitriol and was used to treat osteoporosis, but a side effect (that was completely unexpected) was complete remission of the psoriasis.

The FDA has just recently approved the use of Cyclosporin, an immunosuppressive drug with the original intent of making liver, kidney and heart transplants more successful. A side effect of the drug, however is the remission of psoriasis, often within 8 weeks of regular treatment. Other immunosuppressive drugs have also been shown to be effective as well.
