Many chiropractors, with varying degrees of scientific evidence to back this up, promote chiropractic as a viable alternative to traditional healthcare. Chiropractors and patients all over the country will attest to improved health with less illness and injury after they incorporated chiropractic into their lives. A fundamental difference between holistic and mechanistic chiropractors is that the holistic chiropractor will treat the patient beyond the scientific limitations a more mechanistic chiropractor would self-impose. This actually ties #1 and #2 together. For example, a mechanistic chiropractor may treat low back pain by working to rehabilitate a sacroiliac joint and then release the client when the sacroiliac joint returns to normal, pain-free function. A holistic chiropractor will treat the client until subluxations (spinal misalignments causing nerve irritation) are fully resolved and then broaden their attention to include general subluxation correction in the entire spine in order to promote general wellness. Both approaches have real value. While imposing limits on treatment based on the limits of what peer-reviewed research can substantiate is important, holistic chiropractors acknowledge that progress in science occurs by pushing the limits of understanding and treating patients in ways that current best evidence may not fully support. The periphery of science is where progress is usually made – though it is also where quackery finds refuge.

3. Are you injured or are you dysfunctional? In other words, did your pain come on suddenly from an injury or did it set in more slowly due to something you repeatedly do?

Sudden pain usually means an injury occurred. Sometimes it is a car accident, or a fall, or a sports injury. These type of injuries may be what a certain type of chiropractor focuses on or even has certification and increased training in. The ACA is the American Chiropractic Association and the ICA is the International Chiropractic Association. The ACA is more mechanistic and the ICA is more holistic. State associations are more varied, so it is difficult to discern much about a chiropractor from looking at his or her state association membership unless you look into the political or philosophical leanings of that organization – a lot of work for finding a chiropractor. To make things simple, know that many ICA chiropractors actually oppose the ACA, and vice versa, so you can glean more from their membership (or non-membership) in national organizations than you can from other things you might find on the website or online listings for a chiropractor. It’s important to not read too much into this bit of information, though, and of course to consider that all people are multi-dimensional and may not fit into the dichotomy I am describing. You may find out soon enough that many chiropractors use one of a handful of companies to make their websites. This means that if you go to ten different chiropractor’s websites you may see the same website over and over again with just a different DC’s name on it.

This means the content is unoriginal and you likely cannot learn much about the chiropractor from their website. This reduces the value of the website. Chiropractors would be better off by ditching the spinning 3D spines and instead putting actual content on their sites. If the reviews seem legitimate they may give you some insight into the kind of DC, but if they are suspicious then you should remember the old adage “buyer beware”. The cervix is a passageway that connects the lowest portion of a women’s uterus (womb) to the vagina. Cancer begins in cells, which are building blocks that make up tissues. Normal cervical cells in the tissues of the cervix grow and divide to form new cells, as and when the body needs them. These cells have a definite life span.

When normal cells grow old or get damaged, they die, and new cells take their place. Sometimes, this process goes wrong and new cells form when the body does not need them, and old or damaged cells do not die, as they should. The buildup of such extra cells often forms a mass of tissue called a tumor.

Scientists are not completely sure why cells become cancerous. However, there are some risk factors, which are known to increase the risk of developing cervical cancer. Human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted virus is responsible for about 99% of all cervical cancers. There are over 100 different types of HPV, most of which are considered low-risk and do not cause cervical cancer. High-risk HPV types may cause cervical cell abnormalities or cancer. More than 70 percent of cervical cancer cases can be attributed to two types of the virus, HPV-16 and HPV-18, often referred to as high-risk HPV types.

Other risk factors include, multiple sexual partners, becoming sexually active early, smoking, and people with weakened immune system, such as those suffering with HIV/AIDS or transplant recipients on immunosuppressive medications. Certain genetic factors, giving birth at a very young age, multiple pregnancies, long-term use of the contraceptive pill also raises a woman’s risk of developing cervical cancer.

Being a silent killer, symptoms of cervical cancer aren’t always obvious and it may not cause any symptoms at all until it has reached an advanced stage, where chances of survival are less and the treatment is expensive. Regular screenings are essential to combat this cancer before its spreads.

In most cases, symptoms develop when the cancer becomes invasive and spreads to nearby tissues. When this happens the most common symptom is abnormal vaginal bleeding or bleeding between periods. Other symptoms include bleeding after having sex, pain during intercourse, unusual vaginal discharge, leg pain and swelling and low back pain.

If diagnosed at an early stage, treatment is possible using surgery that is removal of uterus. Radiotherapy is an alternative to surgery for some. In some cases it is used alongside surgery. More advanced cases of cervical cancer are usually treated using a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Get vaccinated against HPV

Vaccines have been developed to prevent infection with some of the HPV types associated with cervical cancer. Currently available vaccines are intended to produce immunity to HPV types 16 and 18, so that women who are exposed to these viruses will not develop infections.

Pap Smear Test

A pap smear is a quick, painless test used to detect early cell changes in cervical cells, which may later progress to cancer. Cells from the cervix are scraped and used as sample for a pathological analysis. A positive result for abnormal cells is confirmed by a coloscopy or a biopsy.

Simple vinegar test

With this test — called VIA, for visual inspection with acetic acid – sterile diluted vinegar is applied to a cotton swab and brushed onto the cervix. After one minute, normal tissue stays the same color — but cancerous tissue turns white. You only need a lamp to see it.

2. Cereal. Cereal is food you have to be careful with. The vast majority are loaded with sugar which brands attempt to hide by fixing your attention on the vitamins and minerals they contain – many times in low amounts.

However, if you can find a box of cereal that is…

  • entirely whole-grain,
  • low in added sugars, and
  • high in fiber,

you have a reliable option for breakfast. A bowl of cereal and milk can be a great start to the day.

3. Oatmeal. Oatmeal is very similar to cereal – avoid the kinds with needless sugar, add some milk and enjoy. Oatmeal is best consumed warm or hot, and you are free to add fruit, honey, or cinnamon. Oatmeal can help lower your cholesterol and is a high-quality carbohydrate that is easy on your blood sugar as long as you avoid the instant kind.

4. Protein Shakes. Next is a protein shake. Whether it is with milk or blended with fruit, protein shakes are not just a post-workout option but are also a good choice first thing in the morning as they tend to be low-calorie.

5. Fruit. Who said you had to have a full meal for breakfast? Fruit is an excellent choice for many people. Do not hesitate to follow it up with a protein shake – this way you will not feel the need to eat for hours.

Most people will find the above options sufficient to improve their diet. Just remember, lunch and dinner still count, so make sure you also eat well during those meals.

There are times when I'm writing that I just stare out the window thinking. I have often observed young people walking down the sidewalk with ear buds in and text messaging. I get the feeling that this continues when the young person gets home.

Texting : I admit that I will text someone in the house with me rather than go and talk to them. That is usually because I am downstairs and they are upstairs. If I am doing that I'm pretty sure that kids are. Why get up and go to where a person is if you can text?

Too Busy : When my teachers cave assignments that they had to keep in mind that we would have to physically go to the library to get information for any reports or term papers. That was calculated into the amount of time given for the assignment to come due.

That is not needed anymore. In fact, schools are giving children as young as sixth grade iPads so they can finish their assignments faster. All the teachers think it's great because the children can learn more and faster. That's great … without your child has five teachers that want a four page (word processed) report with bibliography inside a week. When is the child supposed to get exercise?

Instant Gratification : If you want to know something there are pieces of technology all over most of our homes that will help you do so. If you want to watch something you do not have to go to a video store. There are quite a few companies that provide what you want to watch from the comfort of your living room. The same applies to many video games. If you want to buy something you do not have to go to the store.

All at Home : Technology is great but it has some drawbacks. When it's too much effort to get up and go talk to someone * in the same house * technology is creating part of our obesity problem, especially with our children.

Small Behavior Modifications – Make Yourself More Attractive by Controlling Rejection

Embrace rejection because it will lead to success.

If you are afraid to fail with women, then you are afraid to succeed. A typical encounter goes something like this:

A man approaches a woman in a bar. As he approaches, he worries about looking stupid and feeling embarrassed if she rejects him. The man says something unoriginal like “Hi. What are you drinking,” that the woman has probably heard a thousand times. The man projects weakness by being needy and outcome dependent. The woman senses this and is not attracted. She loses interest quickly and gets annoyed with the stranger. She rejects him by turning her back, being rude, or telling him to leave. He feels dejected, tucks his tail, and try’s to nurture his now bruised ego.

There is no such thing as failure, only feedback.  What can you learn from that situation? How could you have executed better?

And if she does reject you…does it matter? Do you really care what some random, meaningless woman thinks? Has she proved anything other than she was blessed with good looks? Women think the same way. Why should she care what some random, meaningless man has to say?

Scientists have recently revealed that the same part of the brain that handles physical pain (e.g., stubbing your toe) also handles social rejection (e.g., having a woman turn you down or embarrass you in public). This explains why your initial reaction to a woman’s rejection is to become embarrassed – your brain actually senses pain (to your ego).  Now that you know this, you can consciously combat those feelings of embarrassment. 

So act unaffected. Indifferent. If she says, “Wow Mr. Man, you are so sexy I want to make out with you,” you should have the same demeanor, body language, and non-reactive attitude as though she said, “Hey jerk, leave me alone.” Women are attracted to men that do not react to them.

When women see a man that is not phased by social rejection, they become attracted.  They start thinking, “Why is he so confident?  I want to know more. Why isn’t he reacting to me like all the other guys?”  They don’t know their ‘attraction switches’ are being flipped because it’s subconscious. High status men do not care about social rejection (or rejection from women).  High status (alpha) men know that a man’s value does not change relative to some meaningless woman’s opinion. 

Remember to tell yourself these things when dating and attracting women:

– I will step up to the plate and take my swings because I know if I don’t, I will never hit home runs.

Common Traumatic Red Lesions in the Mouth (Part 2)

Mechanical trauma to the oral lining can produce a variety of clinical lesions, depending upon the nature and circumstances of the insult. Three common red, flat lesions in the mouth are (1) the erythematous macule and erosion, (2) the purpuric macule, and (3) the granulomatous stage of the inflammatory hyperplasia. The erythematous lesions are previously described in "Common Traumatic Red Lesion, Part 1." This article discusses the second illness, the purpuric macules.

The purpuric macule is produced by a blunt traumatic insult to the skin or mucosa of sufficient force to cause the discharge of blood on the surface. If the sufferer is examined soon after the traumatic incident has occurred, petechial (small pinpoint) or ecchymotic (larger) areas are observed. These areas are quite red. If sufficient time has lapsed to permit some breakdown of the hemoglobin pigment, the "breeze" is bluish, under the color changes from green to yellow.

The size of the purpuric macule varies according to the size and the force of the physical agent inflating the damage. Usually the borders of the lesion are poorly demarcated, blending almost imperceptibly with the surrounding normal tissue. The lesion does not blanch on pressure because the red blood cells are within the tissues rather than in vessels. Neverheless, purpuric macules may also have an accompaniment inflammatory component. In such cases, you may see some blanching on palpation. Virtually any of the oral surfaces may be involved. The most common sites are the palate, the cheek, and the floor of the mouth.

Frequently, reddish elliptic purpuric macules occurring on the palatal skin near the junction between the hard and the soft part of the palate. This condition may be the result from oral sexual practices, when the repeated bumping of the male organ traumatizes on the soft tissue this region. In such case the lesion disappears within 2 or 3 days, only to return again when the act is recur (Giansanti et al., 1975).

When the transient reddish macules are observed near the junction of the hard and soft palate, the following entities should be considered in your differential diagnosis. They are traumatic erythematous macule, purpuric macule, palatal bruising from severe coughing or vomiting, macular hemangioma, atrophic candidiasis, mononucleosis, and herpangina. The first four lesions are usually are painless. Hemangiomas seldom occurring on the back of the palate, and both of the erythematous macule and the hemangioma blanch somewhat on pressure. In contrastist to the purpuric macule and the erthematous macule, the hemangioma is not transient.

If your lesion is diagnosed by your dentist or physician as a purpuric macule, you should be advised of its nature. You should be followed up at a later date to ensure that the diagnosis was correct and that the lesion has disappeared in a timely manner. In case where erythema (redness) is the main component, a smear for Candida albicans (yeast infection) should be performed (Damm et al., 1981). If candidal organisms are present in the smear, your dentist and physician may prescribe medications, such as nystatin or amphotericin, to institute therapy.

If several purpuric areas are present, you may be asked if you have always bruised excessively and how extensive the trauma was. If the correlation is unsatisfactory, you may need to be tested for the presence of a bleeding diathesis.
