4 Steps to Preventing Childhood Obesity

In the past few years, information on childhood obesity seems to be everywhere. The reason for this is because of the frightening rate at which the number of obese children is growing. Society is essentially trying hard to react to a worsening problem that is spreading to almost epidemic proportions.

There are four main steps all parents must take in order to prevent childhood obesity in their children.

Abolish soft drinks from the diet

One of the biggest problems in children's diets today is that of carbonated soft drinks. Because of the fact that there is absolutely no nutritional value in these drinks, it is crucial that they are eliminated from the diet. This is specifically recommended by doctors and nutritionists as an important factor in combating the epidemic of childhood obesity that has become a reality of the modern era.

Elimination of these drinks from your child's diet may be a difficult process, depending upon age and the amount of consumption. If the child is at an age where he or she does not yet make a choice in what is consumed, then the process is easy. This is where you simply stop giving these drinks to the child, replacing them with more healthy alternatives. Where children are old enough to help themselves, it is important to ensure that no soft drinks are available. Stock your refrigerator with low-fat milk, water, or fruit juices made from real fruit.

Remember that you are a role model for your child and therefore, it is important that you lead by example in your choice of nutritious drinks both at home and when dining out.

By creating a soft drink free environment at home and teaching your child about healthyier alternatives, you can help to change the thought processes. This is only one step but that step can go a long way toward helping your child to achieve or maintain a healthy weight.

Restrict fast food

For children who are already showing signs of obesity, it is best to completely eliminate things such as hamburgers, fried chicken, chips, milkshakes and other fattening products from fast food restaurants. However, if this has been part of the child's routine, it may be difficult. Although scientific literature gives no specific recommendations, it is believed among nutritional experts that fast food is acceptable on a once per week basis.

It is not necessary to totally eliminate takeaway food from the diet but rather to help the child to make healthier choices. Many fast food restaurants are now listening to public opinion and providing a healthier range of food rather than just the traditional range that they are renamed for.

To totally eliminate fast food would be unrealistic as there is also a social connection, particularly in the older children. Often this is a meeting place for friends and it would be hard for the child to resist temptation. It is crucial therefore, that parents ensure their child understands how the traditional fast foods contribute to obesity.

Limit television viewing
It would be unrealistic to think of eliminating television from your child's life not to mention deprivation. There are many programs on television these days that are beneficial to your child's development. However, it is important to limit television viewing as well as other technology such as DVDs and internet.

Child rearing professionals advocate no television at all for children under two and no more that two hours per day for children over two. This also applies to other media technology although internet surfing for homework purposes could have been exempt. Remember also that if your child is spending a lot of time on the internet, it is important to have internet security software for their protection.

Another way of restricting television viewing is to only have a television in the family room rather than allowing your child to have one in the bedroom.

Dinner time is for enjoying the meal and also for enjoying the company and closeness of family. Turn the television off to promote conversation.

Promote physical activity
One of the great regrets of our modern age is the lack of activity of our children. Imaginative play has been replaced by media technology which induces sedentary lifestyles. Our children should all be physically active every day. This can take the form of play, sport, physical education, walking to school or shops, community activities, or any other activity that requires a level of physical exertion.

Pre-school children should be engaging in a minimum of three sessions each week of physical activities that last more than twenty minutes at a time and that require moderate to varying levels of exertion. This should increase as the child gets older. As the child reaches school age, this activity should be reaching around 30 minutes to an hour of physical activity on all or most days of the week.

These recommendations will be difficult at first for the child who has been inactive so do not expect results too quickly. Aim for fun activities with siblings or parents at first. Things such as playing a game of tag or going for a family walk in the park are better than doing nothing and will be beneficial to everyone. Gradually increase the activity during these outings. If done in a fun atmosphere, the child will look forward to these activities and it will become a natural way of life.

Looking to the Future
Unfortunately, obese children often grow up to be obese adults. They are then likely to suffer diseases attributable to this obesity and the economic costs to the community are substantive.

It is there in everyone's interests for measures such as the abolition of soft drinks and fatty fried foods, sweets and chips and any other obesity producing foods to be banned from school tuck shops and in other areas where children frequently purchase foods. Advocating for our children's health and for the future of this generation is of the utmost importance.

Top 5 Reasons For Parasailing

Have you ever wondered how it feels to be a seagull soaring over vast bodies of water at incredible heights? If there was a way for a human to emulate what these magnificent creatures do it would be parasailing.

Parasailing is considered to be one of the most enjoyable water activities in the world. The experience of being up in the air in the middle of the ocean can truly be a feat worth trying. Here’s 5 reasons to go to parasailing.

1. It’s safe.

Beyond any adventure, safety is and must always be a concern. Parasailing is one, if not the safest among water activities. A team of parasailing professionals are there to train you and make sure that you get nothing but pure pleasure in your parasailing experience. The gear has undergone lots of development and testing prior to parasailing being an official water activity. A substantial amount of engineering went into the harness assembly, parachute and hydraulic platform that provides your launch pad. Wind and speed combinations are carefully studied to achieve an almost 0 margin of error.

2. It’s an affordable sport.

Parasailing can come as a solo activity or packaged with other water sports, and because of parasailing’s popularity, it is commonly found as a regular activity in seaside areas. Unlike some water sports where you are required to purchase your own gear, parasailing can be enjoyed by just bringing a towel, beach wear and your pursuit of adventure!

3. It’s easy as pie!

Almost anyone and everyone can do parasailing. Not much skill is required of you when you do it. An adept team of parasail specialists will take you through some basic safety and training lessons before the parasail itself. Then you are ready! Once in the air all you have to do is relax in the harness, enjoy the view and bask in the enjoyment of this one of a kind sport.

4. Share the experience.

Parasailing gives you the option to go solo or include a friend in your ascent. Unwind and let parasailing be a release from all stress as you soar above the sea in the most liberating activity, or share it with someone as you both enjoy astonishing sights only accessible to creatures of flight.

5. A Memorable experience.

Parasailing has been popularised by the sensation that it brings. Such sensation of freedom, discovery, and absolute bliss. The reward of an unforgettable experience is overwhelming for an activity that requires very little effort to perform. Be it a weekend kick or a weeklong adventure, parasailing can give you the buzz that an adventure seeker craves for.

Are You Trapped by Anxiety?

Are you trapped by anxiety? Do you suffer from panic attacks? If so, you want to know if this is something that can be cured. How can you be free of anxiety and panic attacks?

First of all, you are not alone. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, over 40 million Americans over 18 suffer from anxiety disorder. And nearly 6 million Americans suffer from panic attacks as well.

What Causes Anxiety

In order to become free from anxiety you need to understand what causes it.

Anxiety is actually a built-in mechanism that protects us from danger. It is part of the "flight or fight" response. When you are betrayed by something dangerous, such as someone suddenly about to attack you, your body immediately goes into this flight or fight mechanism. This is actually a good thing, because the body uses this to protect itself. If it did not, then you could suffer harm or even death. However, when anxiety begins to be triggered by everyday situations, this can lead to panic attacks.

Panic Attacks

When you suffer a panic attack, your anxiety level goes up. After the attack, your body returns to normal, but now you are fearful of having another one. Your senses are heightened and you are looking for signs of another attack. Sooner or later, another attack comes along. Afterwards, you are left with even more fear. This cycle goes on and on.

You may have tried mechanisms to cope with anxiety. More than likely, you will try to avoid the situation that triggered the attack-eg, going to the mall, or driving. This may lesser the panic attacks, but it leads to your life being controlled by them.

Instead of just trying to agree, you need to free yourself. You need to look into the situations that trigger anxiety and determine the cause. And you need to learn how to change your response from "flight" to "fight."

5 Tips For Choosing the Right Chiropractor

We’ve all been there before: trying to choose between a list of potential businesses or professionals with very little of substance to go on. Most of the time we rely on online reviews, glances at web pages, and if we are lucky we may know someone who has been to that business already and can tell you what to expect.

Going to a chiropractor is an important decision, even more so because many people do not know much about chiropractic to start with. What little they do know may very well be wrong. Some consider chiropractors quite poorly and are skeptical of the profession. Some are open to seeing a chiropractor but have no friends or family to steer them to the right person, and have no experience with chiropractic that would make an Internet search easier. It helps when you know the “language” of something because your Google search will be much more fruitful when you use the right terminology. Using broad terms often will net you nothing more than a list of chiropractors who do a lot of advertising and who fill their websites with keywords just to attract visitors via Google.

Choosing a chiropractor is in many ways a very personal decision. With so many types of DC’s out there that means that you can probably find one tailored to your needs. This article will outline how to conduct a good search that will show you all the local chiropractors and allow you to tell them apart so that you can make the best choice.

1. Are you going to a chiropractor simply for pain relief, or for general health?

You can loosely separate chiropractors into two groups: holistic chiropractors and mechanistic chiropractors. All chiropractors know of this distinction, and in fact the profession has been in a general state of low-level internal conflict along this fault line since it’s inception. Some chiropractors know this as a war of “straights vs. mixers”. The internal conflict, which actually has many positive benefits, has been ongoing since the start of the profession in 1895. This duality is a strength of the profession: without the holistic character of chiropractic we would be physical therapists who adjust the spine, and without the mechanistic character of chiropractic we would lose sight of the very real benefits to health that chiropractic care provides millions of Americans every year, and the real detrimental effects of spinal joint malfunction (subluxation).

2. Do you want long-term care or would you prefer to have your complaint treated and then have your case closed?

Many chiropractors, with varying degrees of scientific evidence to back this up, promote chiropractic as a viable alternative to traditional healthcare. They view chiropractic as a way to foster the health of your nervous system through chiropractic spinal adjustments, which then allows the body to function at a higher level. Chiropractors and patients all over the country will attest to improved health with less illness and injury after they incorporated chiropractic into their lives. Regular adjustments help adults and children cope with everything from allergies to headaches, and people who want to avoid prescription medication often choose chiropractic instead. Hard scientific proof to validate this is difficult to come by due to inherent problems in designing a study capable of testing the “chiropractic lifestyle” and it’s effect on general health, but case series’ exist and we’ve likely all met someone who will swear up and down that chiropractic is keeping them out of the doctor’s office.

On the flip side of this coin are chiropractors that will work to promote proper joint function at the injured area and then rehabilitate the joint and supporting soft tissue, after which they will release you from care. There is a value in this, just as there is a value in wellness or maintenance care. Releasing a patient after their pain is gone will save the patient money. It will also please the patient’s health insurer – not that your insurer’s happiness should ever be a factor in making health decisions, but unfortunately they hold power over your health in some very important ways so there is a value in not ending up in anyone’s crosshair at your insurer’s corporate headquarters. Rather than promote continuing care, a mechanistic chiropractor will work to correct the immediate problem only. Many times back pain may stem from a weak ankle or knee, so your chiropractor may very well focus on a spot that isn’t painful, so do not assume the location of your pain is the cause of your pain.

A fundamental difference between holistic and mechanistic chiropractors is that the holistic chiropractor will treat the patient beyond the scientific limitations a more mechanistic chiropractor would self-impose. This actually ties #1 and #2 together. For example, a mechanistic chiropractor may treat low back pain by working to rehabilitate a sacroiliac joint and then release the client when the sacroiliac joint returns to normal, pain-free function. A holistic chiropractor will treat the client until subluxations (spinal misalignments causing nerve irritation) are fully resolved and then broaden their attention to include general subluxation correction in the entire spine in order to promote general wellness. Both approaches have real value. While imposing limits on treatment based on the limits of what peer-reviewed research can substantiate is important, holistic chiropractors acknowledge that progress in science occurs by pushing the limits of understanding and treating patients in ways that current best evidence may not fully support. The periphery of science is where progress is usually made – though it is also where quackery finds refuge.

3. Are you injured or are you dysfunctional? In other words, did your pain come on suddenly from an injury or did it set in more slowly due to something you repeatedly do?

Sudden pain usually means an injury occurred. Sometimes it is a car accident, or a fall, or a sports injury. These type of injuries may be what a certain type of chiropractor focuses on or even has certification and increased training in. In cases of these types of injuries you want a chiropractor who can confidently treat sprains and strains, who can differentiate different types of injuries, and who will recognize when an injury is too severe for them and is also diligent enough to see certain warning signs and refer you to other providers when necessary. Many holistic chiropractors, though not all, are prone to viewing the spine in terms of subluxations only and may therefore miss the subtle signs of a more severe injury that requires the expertise of a specially-trained chiropractor, an orthopedist or neurologist. Though not a firm rule, a more mechanistic chiropractor may be a safer bet when a painful injury is involved.

4. What professional associations serve the chiropractic profession, and how can this help you find the right DC?

There are two large national organizations that represent chiropractors: the ACA and the ICA. The ACA is the American Chiropractic Association and the ICA is the International Chiropractic Association. The ACA is more mechanistic and the ICA is more holistic. State associations are more varied, so it is difficult to discern much about a chiropractor from looking at his or her state association membership unless you look into the political or philosophical leanings of that organization – a lot of work for finding a chiropractor. To make things simple, know that many ICA chiropractors actually oppose the ACA, and vice versa, so you can glean more from their membership (or non-membership) in national organizations than you can from other things you might find on the website or online listings for a chiropractor. It’s important to not read too much into this bit of information, though, and of course to consider that all people are multi-dimensional and may not fit into the dichotomy I am describing. Still, as part of a larger set of information to make a judgement, this can be helpful to consider.

5. Should you consider their websites, reviews, and testimonials? And how important are personal referrals?

You may find out soon enough that many chiropractors use one of a handful of companies to make their websites. This means that if you go to ten different chiropractor’s websites you may see the same website over and over again with just a different DC’s name on it.

This means the content is unoriginal and you likely cannot learn much about the chiropractor from their website. This reduces the value of the website. Chiropractors would be better off by ditching the spinning 3D spines and instead putting actual content on their sites. These sites are loaded with content but very little, if any, of the information on the site is unique to that chiropractor. Even articles with bylines that include that chiropractor’s name are probably not articles written by that actual chiropractor. Suspect intellectual laziness and dishonesty when any professional puts his name and credentials on an article he or she did not author. While it is a common practice, that does not mean it is the right way to promote yourself.

Online reviews, such as Yelp! and Yahoo!, are great. Often, though, businesses game the system by making fake reviews. Are all the reviews from the same approximate time? For example, are ten reviews all from March 2012? If so, that is suspicious. If the reviews seem legitimate they may give you some insight into the kind of DC, but if they are suspicious then you should remember the old adage “buyer beware”. Quite often a bad review (that is legitimate) will be followed with numerous illegitimate good reviews in order to drown out the bad one. Getting past the illegitimate reviews you may actually be able to get a lot of good information from reading reviews, so don’t hesitate to use a search engine to search for “jones family chiropractic reviews” and see what comes up.

Testimonials should be looked at as marketing, but of course they probably are real stories from real patients. The chiropractor is choosing what message you want to hear. If they choose 5 patients who talk about the chiropractor curing their back pain, then this chiropractor wants you to view them as a specialist in back pain. If they talk about kids and allergies, that is what they want you to know they specialize in. In this way, testimonials can be used to get a look at the chiropractor.

Personal referrals are the best source of information since it is typically unfiltered and direct. Ask a friend or family member and you will get an unbiased opinion. The best chiropractors (and the best attorneys, realtors, and even bakers) all get most of their new clients because they treated the clients they already have so well. People are quick to complain about poor service, so when someone has a good thing to say about how they were treated then you should recognize this as worthy of your attention. Think of it like this: that person experimented with a chiropractor so you don’t have to. A personal referral from someone you trust is easily the most valuable information you will come across.

That’s it! I hope these five tips help you narrow down your search for the perfect chiropractor. This is by no means an exhaustive list of all considerations, but it is a great way to structure your search and find the DC who fits your needs and will provide what you are looking for. Take care and be well.

PCOS Syndrome – the Effects and Treatment

PCOS (Poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) has numerous symptoms on the basis of that it can be identified and the treatment also depends upon them. Most common of them are infertility, uncommon gain gain and hair loss. In next few lines we will cover up most common effects and ways how to cure them up.

The first problem with all the women is the trouble in being pregnant so the cause must be discovered.

As PCOS is primarily responsible in women for a problem related to pregnancy because it can cause infertility. The therapy which includes stopping eggs production can not be used as it can cause hindrance in getting pregnant. So for treatment of infertility in PCOS syndrome must be done by inducing ovulation and this could be by administrating fertility treatment using fertility drugs. The ill effect if that is while the women ovulate, the chances of conception is low and is more likely to experience the bad reaction of drugs being used for fertility. So monitoring is very necessary.

Another treatment can be said by hormone injections. Ovarian drilling is the alternative when both the methods fail. The treatments we have discussed are time consuming and may have side effects. These conditions in addition can lead to a condition known as ovarian hyper stimulation.
Gaining weight unnecessarily is also an indication of PCOS syndrome. This weight gain is the result of hormonal imbalance and irregular flow of insulin in the body. So to treat it better you must eat smaller meals which keep the blood sugar normal and also regulate the insulin. Try to pick carbohydrates instead of sugar. New Book Focuses on How to Handle Business Growth Beyond Sales

In Sales Won’t Save Your Business, “Super” Joe Pardo answers the questions business owners have about how to create a viable and successful business beyond just selling. The book’s title is very apt because, as Joe points out, selling a lot of your product won’t help your business if you don’t have an effective team in place to handle customer service and you don’t have the right processes and procedures in place to prepare for the growth that results from sales. As a result, Joe takes the reader on a journey to the TOP by dividing the book into three parts that focus on Team, Offer, and Process.

Following a foreword by Lee Cockerell, Retired Executive Vice President of Walt Disney World® Resort, Super Joe jumps right into telling it like it is by asking readers to recall why they started a business in the first place, what is the biggest stress generator in the business, and what they can do to empower themselves in the business.

Joe refers to the contents page as a roadmap, and rather than having chapters, he calls each section a “pin” on that roadmap-a place you must stop and master to move forward in your journey to business growth.

At the heart of this book is a request for the reader to become self-aware. Joe reminds readers to ask others for feedback about their own strengths and weaknesses, to ask for help, not to work themselves to death, and to focus on the influence they have on others. That influence affects the business owner’s team members and their success, so the first part of the book focuses on how to create a successful team, which is an extension of the business and its owner. As Joe says, “Your business is a tree, and the roots of that tree are made of strong relationships.” Being a business owner also means being a leader, which means you have to dig in and do the work yourself. Joe states, “At times, you will need to fill in because of a worker shortage or an emergency. In such situations, it is important for your team to understand you are not just going to sit back and make them do all of the work. This does not mean, however, that you should be working in your business all of the time versus on your business. A great leader knows how to find the balance that will earn respect.”

Being a leader means inspiring your team, and it also means entrusting that team to do what you would do when you don’t have time to do it. Relinquishing power to others is often difficult for leaders, but Joe points out that when you try to micromanage your team, you take power from your managers; that makes team members second-guess their managers and do what they think you want, even though they may not always know what you want. Therefore, you have to empower your managers by letting go of all the power.

Change is always difficult for organizations, so if you want to implement the changes Joe recommends, you’ll have to deal with people who don’t like change.

Consequently, Joe spends a lot of time talking about how to incorporate change in your business without ruffling too many feathers. To illustrate his point, he shares his own story of implementing change in his family’s business, and how, despite a few ruffled feathers, the process became successful.

Despite whatever changes you make, the ultimate goal is to provide customer satisfaction. In Part 2: Focus on the Offer, Joe talks about how to price products properly and how to get your team aligned with providing customer service. The best advice Joe gives here is how to teach your team to focus on the customer’s perspective when providing service.

In Part 3: Focus on the Process, Joe reminds us it’s vital that business owners always seek ways not just to change but to improve. In order to do that, you have to have clear processes. Once processes are in place, team members are clear on their tasks and then the business can run smoothly. As a result, you won’t need to micromanage; you’ll then have time to work on your business rather than working in it.

There’s much more I could talk about here-excellent advice on hiring, firing, and promoting team members; advice on incorporating technology into your business; and advice on how to grow your profit by improving your training. Throughout, Joe sprinkles in his “Super Joe Says” sayings-which are like modern proverbs for business owners. Each pin ends with exercises so that readers don’t just have a reading but a learning experience, allowing them to look at their own businesses and come up with the answers they need. As a result, they’ll close this book having the tools to take their businesses to new levels of growth and their own lives to increased satisfaction.

Fight Cervical Cancer Through Prevention and Early Detection

Remember the famous saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”? This age old saying holds absolutely true for cervical cancer, a leading cause of cancer deaths in women. By the time symptoms develop and women realize that they are ill, it’s usually too late. While a regular check up can ensure a future free of cervical cancer, laxity can lead to a physically and an emotionally draining experience of battling with it.

According to the Cervical Cancer-Free Coalition, a preventable disease, cervical cancer kills more women in India than anywhere in the world, affecting 1, 32,000 women each year of whom 72,000 women lose their battle with it.

Most common in women over the age of 30, cervical cancer affects the uterine cervix, a part of a woman’s reproductive system. The cervix is a passageway that connects the lowest portion of a women’s uterus (womb) to the vagina. Cancer begins in cells, which are building blocks that make up tissues. Normal cervical cells in the tissues of the cervix grow and divide to form new cells, as and when the body needs them. These cells have a definite life span.

When normal cells grow old or get damaged, they die, and new cells take their place. Sometimes, this process goes wrong and new cells form when the body does not need them, and old or damaged cells do not die, as they should. The buildup of such extra cells often forms a mass of tissue called a tumor.

Scientists are not completely sure why cells become cancerous. However, there are some risk factors, which are known to increase the risk of developing cervical cancer. Human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted virus is responsible for about 99% of all cervical cancers. There are over 100 different types of HPV, most of which are considered low-risk and do not cause cervical cancer. High-risk HPV types may cause cervical cell abnormalities or cancer. More than 70 percent of cervical cancer cases can be attributed to two types of the virus, HPV-16 and HPV-18, often referred to as high-risk HPV types.

Other risk factors include, multiple sexual partners, becoming sexually active early, smoking, and people with weakened immune system, such as those suffering with HIV/AIDS or transplant recipients on immunosuppressive medications. Certain genetic factors, giving birth at a very young age, multiple pregnancies, long-term use of the contraceptive pill also raises a woman’s risk of developing cervical cancer.

Being a silent killer, symptoms of cervical cancer aren’t always obvious and it may not cause any symptoms at all until it has reached an advanced stage, where chances of survival are less and the treatment is expensive. Regular screenings are essential to combat this cancer before its spreads.

In most cases, symptoms develop when the cancer becomes invasive and spreads to nearby tissues. When this happens the most common symptom is abnormal vaginal bleeding or bleeding between periods. Other symptoms include bleeding after having sex, pain during intercourse, unusual vaginal discharge, leg pain and swelling and low back pain.

If diagnosed at an early stage, treatment is possible using surgery that is removal of uterus. Radiotherapy is an alternative to surgery for some. In some cases it is used alongside surgery. More advanced cases of cervical cancer are usually treated using a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Get vaccinated against HPV

Vaccines have been developed to prevent infection with some of the HPV types associated with cervical cancer. Currently available vaccines are intended to produce immunity to HPV types 16 and 18, so that women who are exposed to these viruses will not develop infections.

Reduce risk by regular check ups

Pap Smear Test

A pap smear is a quick, painless test used to detect early cell changes in cervical cells, which may later progress to cancer. Cells from the cervix are scraped and used as sample for a pathological analysis. A positive result for abnormal cells is confirmed by a coloscopy or a biopsy.

Simple vinegar test

With this test — called VIA, for visual inspection with acetic acid – sterile diluted vinegar is applied to a cotton swab and brushed onto the cervix. After one minute, normal tissue stays the same color — but cancerous tissue turns white. You only need a lamp to see it.

Type 2 Diabetes – Five Easy Breakfast Ideas for People With Diabetes

You have heard it said many times; breakfast is the most important meal of the day. First, this is highly debatable. Second, you should not allow this idea to convince you to eat a large meal in the morning. Presumably, you will still be having lunch and dinner, and potentially be eating in between those meals. If you have Type 2 diabetes or would like to lose weight, it is crucial to eat less and decrease the frequency at which you eat.

Regardless, there is a “right way” to do breakfast. While there is no such thing as a diabetic diet, there are breakfast meals suited for people with Type 2 diabetes. Let us go over some of them…

1. Eggs. Let us start with the traditional option. Eggs make an excellent choice for breakfast for several reasons…

  • they are packed with nutrients,
  • they are filling, and they
  • can be prepared in a variety of ways to suit your taste.

Do not be misled by the rumors eggs are not a healthy option. Yes, they contain cholesterol but it is only a problem if your cholesterol level is excessive. Your body already produces cholesterol for physiological functions which your body regulates when you consume it.

You may have a cholesterol problem, in which case you should exercise because it would make a significant difference. Still, you can have eggs every so often. Just skip the bacon.

2. Cereal. Cereal is food you have to be careful with. The vast majority are loaded with sugar which brands attempt to hide by fixing your attention on the vitamins and minerals they contain – many times in low amounts.

However, if you can find a box of cereal that is…

  • entirely whole-grain,
  • low in added sugars, and
  • high in fiber,

you have a reliable option for breakfast. A bowl of cereal and milk can be a great start to the day.

3. Oatmeal. Oatmeal is very similar to cereal – avoid the kinds with needless sugar, add some milk and enjoy. Oatmeal is best consumed warm or hot, and you are free to add fruit, honey, or cinnamon. Oatmeal can help lower your cholesterol and is a high-quality carbohydrate that is easy on your blood sugar as long as you avoid the instant kind.

4. Protein Shakes. Next is a protein shake. Whether it is with milk or blended with fruit, protein shakes are not just a post-workout option but are also a good choice first thing in the morning as they tend to be low-calorie.

5. Fruit. Who said you had to have a full meal for breakfast? Fruit is an excellent choice for many people. Do not hesitate to follow it up with a protein shake – this way you will not feel the need to eat for hours.

Most people will find the above options sufficient to improve their diet. Just remember, lunch and dinner still count, so make sure you also eat well during those meals.

How Advances in Technology Are Causing Obesity in Today's Children

There are times when I'm writing that I just stare out the window thinking. I have often observed young people walking down the sidewalk with ear buds in and text messaging. I get the feeling that this continues when the young person gets home.

Texting : I admit that I will text someone in the house with me rather than go and talk to them. That is usually because I am downstairs and they are upstairs. If I am doing that I'm pretty sure that kids are. Why get up and go to where a person is if you can text?

Too Busy : When my teachers cave assignments that they had to keep in mind that we would have to physically go to the library to get information for any reports or term papers. That was calculated into the amount of time given for the assignment to come due.

That is not needed anymore. In fact, schools are giving children as young as sixth grade iPads so they can finish their assignments faster. All the teachers think it's great because the children can learn more and faster. That's great … without your child has five teachers that want a four page (word processed) report with bibliography inside a week. When is the child supposed to get exercise?

Instant Gratification : If you want to know something there are pieces of technology all over most of our homes that will help you do so. If you want to watch something you do not have to go to a video store. There are quite a few companies that provide what you want to watch from the comfort of your living room. The same applies to many video games. If you want to buy something you do not have to go to the store.

All at Home : Technology is great but it has some drawbacks. When it's too much effort to get up and go talk to someone * in the same house * technology is creating part of our obesity problem, especially with our children.

The Best and Worst Wedding Dates of the Year

The wedding date you select can have a larger impact than you may realize on the event. Certain dates may mean a poor turn-out or higher prices, while other dates can mean that everyone shows up ready for a great party. Check out the best and worst wedding dates of the year before you set the date for your nuptials.

Certain wedding dates are almost completely off-limits. Those include Christmas day, Thanksgiving, and Easter Sunday. Hold your wedding on any of those days, and you may well find that you and your groom are the only ones in attendance! If a holiday weekend is the only time that your whole family will be in one place, you might have to consider scheduling your nuptials within a couple of days of those taboo dates; just be aware that many people on your guest list will be unable to attend. The chances are that they will be spending those precious holidays with their own close family members, and even those who could come come decide not to when they see how much airline tickets cost over Thanksgiving weekend!

There is another holiday, however, that people think is so romantic for weddings, which in fact can have some serious drawbacks. That would be Valentine's Day. What is wrong with a Valentine's Day wedding? For one thing, the flower prices can soar around February 14th, particularly for roses. You will also find it more difficult to get dinner reservations on your anniversary for the rest of your lives together. Moreover, many couples prefer to celebrate Valentine's Day having a romantic dinner for two, not attending a wedding. Last but not least, having a wedding on Valentine's is a lot of pressure to come up with the most romantic wedding ever.

The next worst possible wedding date is Superbowl Sunday. About half the men on the guest list will flat out refusal to attend, and the other half will be resentful about having been dragged to your wedding while the big game is on. A lot of the women will feel the same way! When you walk down the aisle, all eyes should be upon you in your fabulous dress and wedding jewelry, but if you wed during the Superbowl, most of the guests will be checking out the game score on their mobile devices. Almost as bad is hosting a wedding during an NFL playoff game; just do not do it!

Some dates are really fun for weddings. If you really want to ensure a great party atmosphere for your reception, host it on New Year 'Eve. That is one day of the year when everyone is in the mood to celebrate and have fun. You will also find that guests are especially eager to wear their most fabulous outfits and festive wedding jewelry on New Year's Eve. It would be the perfect date for a black tie wedding.

Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends can also be ideal wedding dates. The majority of people will have a three day weekend, which makes travel much easier for out-of-towners. They are also not such family-oriented holidays that a lot of people will be unable to attend. Weather tend to be nice in late May and early September, which adds to the appeal of those dates. Really the only drawback to Memorial Day and Labor Day weddings is that they are popular dates. To score one of those coveted dates for your wedding, be prepared to plan far ahead.

Small Behavior Modifications – Make Yourself More Attractive by Controlling Rejection

Embrace rejection because it will lead to success.

If you are afraid to fail with women, then you are afraid to succeed. A typical encounter goes something like this:

A man approaches a woman in a bar. As he approaches, he worries about looking stupid and feeling embarrassed if she rejects him. The man says something unoriginal like “Hi. What are you drinking,” that the woman has probably heard a thousand times. The man projects weakness by being needy and outcome dependent. The woman senses this and is not attracted. She loses interest quickly and gets annoyed with the stranger. She rejects him by turning her back, being rude, or telling him to leave. He feels dejected, tucks his tail, and try’s to nurture his now bruised ego.

There is no such thing as failure, only feedback.  What can you learn from that situation? How could you have executed better?

And if she does reject you…does it matter? Do you really care what some random, meaningless woman thinks? Has she proved anything other than she was blessed with good looks? Women think the same way. Why should she care what some random, meaningless man has to say?

Scientists have recently revealed that the same part of the brain that handles physical pain (e.g., stubbing your toe) also handles social rejection (e.g., having a woman turn you down or embarrass you in public). This explains why your initial reaction to a woman’s rejection is to become embarrassed – your brain actually senses pain (to your ego).  Now that you know this, you can consciously combat those feelings of embarrassment.

So act unaffected. Indifferent. If she says, “Wow Mr. Man, you are so sexy I want to make out with you,” you should have the same demeanor, body language, and non-reactive attitude as though she said, “Hey jerk, leave me alone.” Women are attracted to men that do not react to them.

When women see a man that is not phased by social rejection, they become attracted.  They start thinking, “Why is he so confident?  I want to know more. Why isn’t he reacting to me like all the other guys?”  They don’t know their ‘attraction switches’ are being flipped because it’s subconscious. Women are attracted to men who have the highest social status. High status men do not care about social rejection (or rejection from women).  High status (alpha) men know that a man’s value does not change relative to some meaningless woman’s opinion.

Remember to tell yourself these things when dating and attracting women:

– I will embrace rejection because I can learn from everything that is not a success.

– There is no such thing as failure, only feedback.

– I will step up to the plate and take my swings because I know if I don’t, I will never hit home runs.

– It’s her loss if she doesn’t want to spend time with me. I will move on to the next woman.

– Pride is useless. The “too cool for school” attitude will not get me anywhere.

– I will be indifferent and non-needy when interacting with women.

Common Traumatic Red Lesions in the Mouth (Part 2)

Mechanical trauma to the oral lining can produce a variety of clinical lesions, depending upon the nature and circumstances of the insult. Three common red, flat lesions in the mouth are (1) the erythematous macule and erosion, (2) the purpuric macule, and (3) the granulomatous stage of the inflammatory hyperplasia. The erythematous lesions are previously described in "Common Traumatic Red Lesion, Part 1." This article discusses the second illness, the purpuric macules.

The purpuric macule is produced by a blunt traumatic insult to the skin or mucosa of sufficient force to cause the discharge of blood on the surface. If the sufferer is examined soon after the traumatic incident has occurred, petechial (small pinpoint) or ecchymotic (larger) areas are observed. These areas are quite red. If sufficient time has lapsed to permit some breakdown of the hemoglobin pigment, the "breeze" is bluish, under the color changes from green to yellow.

The size of the purpuric macule varies according to the size and the force of the physical agent inflating the damage. Usually the borders of the lesion are poorly demarcated, blending almost imperceptibly with the surrounding normal tissue. The lesion does not blanch on pressure because the red blood cells are within the tissues rather than in vessels. Neverheless, purpuric macules may also have an accompaniment inflammatory component. In such cases, you may see some blanching on palpation. Virtually any of the oral surfaces may be involved. The most common sites are the palate, the cheek, and the floor of the mouth.

Frequently, reddish elliptic purpuric macules occurring on the palatal skin near the junction between the hard and the soft part of the palate. This condition may be the result from oral sexual practices, when the repeated bumping of the male organ traumatizes on the soft tissue this region. In such case the lesion disappears within 2 or 3 days, only to return again when the act is recur (Giansanti et al., 1975).

When the transient reddish macules are observed near the junction of the hard and soft palate, the following entities should be considered in your differential diagnosis. They are traumatic erythematous macule, purpuric macule, palatal bruising from severe coughing or vomiting, macular hemangioma, atrophic candidiasis, mononucleosis, and herpangina. The first four lesions are usually are painless. Hemangiomas seldom occurring on the back of the palate, and both of the erythematous macule and the hemangioma blanch somewhat on pressure. In contrastist to the purpuric macule and the erthematous macule, the hemangioma is not transient.

If your lesion is diagnosed by your dentist or physician as a purpuric macule, you should be advised of its nature. You should be followed up at a later date to ensure that the diagnosis was correct and that the lesion has disappeared in a timely manner. In case where erythema (redness) is the main component, a smear for Candida albicans (yeast infection) should be performed (Damm et al., 1981). If candidal organisms are present in the smear, your dentist and physician may prescribe medications, such as nystatin or amphotericin, to institute therapy.

If several purpuric areas are present, you may be asked if you have always bruised excessively and how extensive the trauma was. If the correlation is unsatisfactory, you may need to be tested for the presence of a bleeding diathesis.
