The Facts on Male Orgasmic Disorder

If you have male orgasmic disorder, which is the inability to orgasm even with sexual stimulation, then you probably are feeling embarrassed and inadequate. Even if you just have severely delayed orgasms it can really hinder your sex life which leads to feelings of low self esteem and general unhappiness with your sex life. Although this condition if found more commonly in women, many men are going through the same thing but have not come forward to speak to their doctor simply because they are embarrassed, and because there does not seem to be much concern for this.

If this sounds like something you may have, then the best advice is to seek the help of a medical professional such as your doctor or a sex therapist. They are often the best people to know if this is what is happening to you, and what you can do about it. To be diagnosed with male orgasmic disorder you must have this constantly, and not just a time or two here and there. The doctor will also look to see if it happens only when you are having sex or when you are masturbating as well. Unfortunately, doctors only see this as a disorder if it is causing you stress or embarrassment. Otherwise, for some reason, this disorder is almost ignored as something a man just "goes through."

The causes can range from psychological to physiological. The way to fix this problem is to decide which of these is the reason for your orgasmic disorder. It could be caused by disease such as multiple sclerosis, hyperthyroidism, stroke, or Cushing's syndrome. It also could be caused by medication that you are taking such as high blood pressure medication or antidepressants. Most commonly though male orgasmic disorder is caused by psychological reasons such as stress, exhaustion, fear, or so many others. Therapy with a registered sex therapist is definitely your best course of action if this is the case.

Also you may want to consider making a few lifestyle changes. By quitting drinking and smoking it may may help with your problem. You may want to exercise more and become healthier. Also, by doing Yoga or Pilates you can remove any stress in your life that may also be a factor. There are many ways to change this but first you have to be willing to do the work. You can also get a boost in your orgasms throughout all natural supplements which are made up of vitamins, minerals, and herbal ingredients to increase your stamina and strength of your orgasms. Just make sure to consult your doctor before trying anything like this.

You do not have to live your life without orgasms. As long as you get the help you need, you will feel better and be able to have sex and actually enjoy it.

Type 2 Diabetes – Predicting Gestational Diabetes Early

Gestational diabetes is similar to Type 2 diabetes except it occurs during pregnancy. While it is a temporary form of the disease which usually disappears after childbirth, it is a sign of insulin resistance and means full-blown Type 2 diabetes could be around the corner. The condition is generally diagnosed between weeks 24 and 26 of the pregnancy. If it could be predicted earlier physicians and midwives might be able, in the words of the old western movies, to “head ’em off at the pass.” Diet and exercise, and perhaps medication, could be prescribed early to prevent Gestational diabetes in those women at high risk once they have been identified. Blood sugar levels could be watched carefully, and treatment began sooner than 24 weeks if need be.

In July of 2018, the online journal PLOS One reported on a review and analysis of earlier studies on screening for the early detection of the Gestational diabetes risk. Researchers at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, United States, combined the results of…

  • thirteen earlier investigations of molecules called plasma protein-A as a possible indicator of what was to come.
  • they did the same with nine studies of the molecule free beta-hCG.

They found both molecules were lower in the blood of women who later developed diabetes during their pregnancy, than in women who did not produce the condition. The investigators recommend more studies be carried out to determine whether measurements of the two molecules during the first three months of pregnancy could be a practical way of deciding which pregnant women needed intense therapy to ward off Gestational diabetes.

Plasma protein-A, an enzyme, is measured during the first three months, or trimester, of pregnancy to detect the possibility of trisomy 21, or Down Syndrome, or other conditions in which the fetus has extra chromosomes. It is made by the placenta and fetus, starting in the first trimester and increasing throughout the pregnancy. It is thought…

  • to keep the mother’s immune system from attacking the fetus as an invader,
  • helping the fetus grow bones, and developing
  • new blood vessels.

It has been suggested for use in diagnosing…

  • weak growth in the fetus,
  • premature birth,
  • a condition known as preeclampsia in the mother, and
  • stillbirth.

The beta-hCG is a hormone produced by the placenta after implantation. The presence of hCG is detected in some pregnancy tests and can be detected in the urine at about two weeks and is used to diagnose pregnancy. It increases up to about two months and then levels off. Repetitive blood tests detect whether levels are rising as they should be and can be helpful in diagnosing…

  • dating the pregnancy,
  • a possible miscarriage,
  • blighted egg cell, or
  • pregnancy outside of the uterus.

With the same steps taken to handle Type 2 diabetes, Gestational diabetes can often be stopped from developing into full-blown Type 2 diabetes.

Childhood Obesity – The Best Ways In Which Parents Can Help

When the girls were growing up we worked hard to make sure they were healthy. At one point I even turned the back yard into a garden. It tasted good but the yard did not look that great after harvest. That was one of the many ways we tried to make sure they stayed well.

Check Ups : Children need to see the pediatrician for more than colds and shots. Each time the child is there, the medical assistant takes their height and weight. This is put into a percentile that will help them know if there is a problem with weight. Even before it's visible it will be seen on that chart.

Nutrition Counseling : I grow up in the South. Almost everything I learned to cook had bacon grease, butter or both. I had to learn to cook all over again in order to keep our family healthy. If you are having difficulties figuring out how to do that the pediatrician can refer you to a nutritionist who will provide the information you need.

Follow Through at School : There is always a lot of fuss about school food. Some schools are trying to serve healthier lunches. The problem they are having is that the kids do not like it. The food gets wasted and the kids pig out when they get home.

If your school does not or can not provide an edible, healthy lunch then packing it is a better idea. That can also end up being wasted if the child does not like it, so include the child in making healthy choices.

Lead By Example : What we do will be seen by our children. Even if they do not see us do it they can probably figure it out. We need to eat a healthy diet, make sure we get our checksups and encourage activity. Otherwise the kids will think that it's only something children have to do and stop when they become adults.

Psoriasis Treatment Using Natural Remedies

If you have Psoriasis or any other skin problem, I know you are always looking for a solution. With psoriasis, the skin breaks out in itchy rashes, unsightly blemishes, and white flakes.

In psoriasis, the skin cells multiply quickly causing rashes to appear quickly. Normal skin renews itself in 30 days, but in psoriasis, skin cells move from the innermost layer of skin to the skin surface in 3 days, causing red and itchy areas. In addition, as cells accumulate on the surface they die, turning white and flaky.

Finding a psoriasis treatment that cures is not easy since there does not appear to be one. Most doctors or dermatologists do not know what causes psoriasis and consider it incurable. But there are many different natural remedies that can give some relief to psoriasis but at far as a natural psoriasis treatment that is a cure, there is none.

Here is a list of psoriasis treatments that you may want to try.

Give your skin some sun to give your body additional energy and Vitamin D to fight your psoriasis. You can add Vitamin D supplements to the list of vitamins you take. The psoriasis sun treatment works better with UVB rays but these rays also cause sunburn. So you may want to put sunscreen on those areas that do not have psoriasis.

Drink teas or take capsules of sarsaparilla, milk thistle or nettle leaves.

Take a regular dose of fish oil or flax seed. Start with 1500 mg per day of fish oil

Use a couple tablespoons of granular lecithin. You can add it to your soups, salads, morning cereal, or smoothes. Never add it to boiling water or use it as cooking oil since it oxidizes rapidly and becomes rancid.

Take large dose of inositol, a B vitamin, around 1.5 grams or more and see how it affects your psoriasis.

Use a diluted apple cider vinegar over your psoriasis to reduce itching. Start with 10 parts apple cider vinegar to 90 part of distilled water. No known pathogen can survive in apple cider vinegar.

Keep stress down if possible, stress lowers the immune system and a weak immune system can not keep up with the activity of psoriasis.

There is another herb that appears to be an excellent psoriasis treatment. It's called mahonia quifolium and is better known as Oregon grape or holly-leaved barberry, which is a natural plant extract

This extract is,

-A strong antibacterial

-A strong antifungal

-Inhibits the excessive abnormal skin cell growth

-Reduces infection

-Activates the release of histamine

You can find mahonia aquifolium in a product called M-Folia. This product comes in various forms – ointments, shampoos, sunscreen, and cream preparations

Keep your psoriasis area open to air and do not allow jewelry or tight clothing to press against it. Stay of away from harsh chemicals sprays and liquid irritants.

Keep stress down if possible, stress lowers the immune system and a weak immune system can not keep up with the activity of psoriasis.

Use a psoriasis treatment as mentioned above to help give you psoriasis relief. You can use a combination of these remedies, so experiment to see which works the best for you.

Can Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Programs Restore Your Active and Healthy Lifestyle

Medication, intervention, and surgical procedures often fall short when it comes to curing chronic pain issues. Pain can affect your work abilities and social and private lifestyle, thus strapping your relationships and throwing you into perpetual anguish. In such situations, the only option left for the patients is to reduce their activities to minimize their pain levels. Fortunately, rehabilitation programs offered by pain clinics in the US are showing a better way to claim back active lifestyle while managing chronic pain. Let us try to understand how.

What is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain is quite different from injury or physical damage related pain, which we call acute pain. Extended research on these sectors has finally proven that chronic pain is connected to our nervous system. When our nerves change (through damage or by other means) it can grow super-sensitive and turn effortless activities incredibly difficult to do. Chronic pain management programs follow various coping strategies and psychological reconditioning to reduce pain and restore a comparatively active lifestyle. These programs do not follow one but multiple treatment strategies taken from psychologists, doctors, and physical therapists to guide patients through the pain.

Goals of Chronic Pain Management Programs

Like any other medical treatment process, chronic pain rehab programs have their own set of goals. The program mainly revolves around offering patients various ways to manage pain on a day-to-day basis. Its goals are

  • Offering a grip on anxiety, irritability, depression and other psychological problems.
  • Helping patients avoid an addiction to pain medication.
  • Reducing pain through relieving stress.
  • Handling active lifestyle duties.

Strategies of these programs revolve around 'self-management'. The focus is on changing the lifestyle so that the sufferer can manage the pain with relative ease.

Pain Management Therapies

Pain clinics offering chronic pain management programs present different therapies, equipped enough to handle and reduce different degrees of pain. Research shows that these therapies can help in decreasing the pain levels by a whopping 40 percent. Here is a list of a few of the most popular therapies offered in pain clinics.

  • Stretching exercises
  • Pool therapy
  • Core strengthening exercises
  • Aerobic exercises
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Relaxation therapies
  • Vocational rehabilitation
  • Psychotherapy
  • Helping taper off non-narcotic medication usage

Research shows that almost 50 percent of people taking part in these therapies usually returns to a more active lifestyle.

Coping Strategies

The first step of chronic pain management programs is to accept that patients have to live with their pain. It can not be cured, but it is certainly possible to live with it, suppressing its intensity. As a second step, these clinics introduce coping strategies to manage pain. Let us take a quick peek of a few of these strategies:

  • Exercising to generate endorphins as pain suppressant
  • Cutting back on smoking and drinking alcohol
  • Using massage therapy to release stress and tension
  • Practicing deep breathing technique to relax easily
  • Eating healthy to keep digestive process and blood pressure under control

Plus, there are aftercare services to help patients keep up with their new lifestyle. These services involve obtaining suggestions and psychological support from experts to stay on the track.

Living with chronic pain is unduly hard. But, the pain clinics help patients lead a normal lifestyle, as much as possible. Yes, it is a long and continuous process, but definitely something that offers hope to millions living with pain.

Sleep Anxiety – What it is and How to Beat It

If you have chronic insomnia, it’s quite likely that you also have sleep anxiety. And just what does that mean, exactly?

It means that your insomnia is making you feel anxious. This anxious feeling is making it even harder to fall asleep. So you’re now on an endless loop of…

…not being able to sleep, then

…feeling anxious about not sleeping, then

…staying up even longer, which of course is

…getting you even more uptight and anxious

…and so on and so forth.

In addition to this endless loop of 1) worrying about not sleeping and 2) not sleeping because of worrying so much, there is another, cruelly ironic twist to sleep anxiety.

Every time you begin to feel like you just might drift off to sleep, you become conscious of it – mainly because you want it so much – and a thought pops into your mind, such as “Hey I might actually be falling asleep!” or something very similar. What happens then?

Well, naturally you get wide awake all over again. The thought that you might finally get some sleep triggers even more sleep anxiety because you’re so afraid it won’t happen!

How to Beat Sleep Anxiety

Before you can deal with this very frustrating condition, you must understand two things:

1) You’ve become habituated to falling victim to this vicious cycle. Your own thoughts about sleep — especially about how important sleep is to you and how much you want it and need it — are literally keeping you awake! You will never get rid of your sleep anxiety until you recognize this crucial fact.

2) No matter how powerful these thoughts feel to you, you CAN change them. Far too many insomniacs suffer needlessly because they don’t know or don’t believe that they can change their own thoughts about sleep.

But make no mistake about it, you CAN get rid of sleep anxiety by changing your thoughts and how you approach the problem of your chronic insomnia.

Using a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques, relaxation therapy techniques and old fashioned patience and persistence, you can get rid of sleep anxiety for good.

What is cognitive behavioral therapy?

This is a process of examining your own thoughts and feelings and deciding whether they are truly accurate and truthful… or if they are exaggerated, misleading, unhelpful or outright false. Once you determine whether your negative thoughts are leading you down the wrong path, you then replace them with thoughts that can help you. This is a method that has proven time and again to be very effective

What is relaxation therapy?

This involves special techniques for relaxing both the mind and the body, and may include slow, deep breaths, visualization, progressive muscular relaxation, and what I call “letting-go” techniques.

To get rid of the sleep anxiety that’s causing insomnia, you must set aside some time to work on it… perhaps 30 minutes a day to start. This period can be broken down into two 15 minute segments. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can change your anxious thoughts and habitual ways of thinking and feeling.

Isn’t it time to break that frustrating vicious cycle that keeps you tossing and turning at night?

Sleep Secrets- Get the Good Night Sleep You Deserve

There are few things in life as satisfying as a good night's sleep. Mothers insist on it to help children grow well, doctors advise it for optimum health, and beauty gurus recommend it to stay younger and feel better. Thus, it is important to get the good night sleep you deserve.

Ironically, however, this supposedly natural body phenomenon proves impossible to achieve for many people. If you have sleeping disorders and you find it hard to get the good night sleep you deserve, you are not alone. A report by the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke reveals that about 40 million people suffer from chronic long-term sleep disorders each year.

Sleeping disorders are generally categorized into three categories: lack of sleep (eg insomnia), disturbed sleep (eg sleep apnea or the obstruction of airways during sleep), and excessive sleep (eg narcolepsy, the condition of falling asleep spontaneously and unwillingly).

If you regularly can not get the good night sleep you deserve, then you might have a chronic sleep disorder. Some sleep disorders are chronic, thought about by deep medical or psychiatric conditions. Others occur occasionally and are only temporary, cured easily by eliminating the root cause of sleep deficiency. Common causes of sleep disorders are lifestyle changes, work-related stress, and prescription drugs that disrupt sleeping patterns.

People with sleeping disorders are typically given medications or advised to undergo behavioral or psychotherapeutic treatments to treat their condition. While medications (such as sleeping pills) provide easy and immediate relief, they do not exactly give you the good night sleep you deserve and do not eliminate the root of a sleep deficiency.

So before you pop that pill, remember that much can be done to win the fight against sleepless nights. Here are some tips to get the good night sleep you deserve – either before you hit the hay or as you lay in bed frustrated.

One way to get the good night sleep you deserve is to figure out how much you need. A good night's sleep varies from one person to another. Infants sleep most of the day (about 16 hours); teenagers usually need about 9 hours a day; and adults need an average of 7 to 8 hours a day. The key is to keep track of the total number of hours you spent sleeping. For two weeks, take note of how many hours you spend in the sack, including naps. Calculate the average sleep you get in twenty-four hours. If you get, say, six hours, spend six-and-a-half hours in bed, to allow for time to fall sleep.

Another way to get the good night sleep you deserve is to develop a pre-sleep routine. Every night, before you hit the sheets, perform a specific "wind-down" ritual. Read a book, do yoga stretches, listen to calm music – anything that helps you de-stress. A nighttime routine will create an association with sleep that your body will respond to automatically. This routine will help you get the good night sleep you deserve.

Use your bed wisely. Try to avoid non-sleeping activities in bed, such as watching television or balancing your bankbook. These activities will not help you get the good night sleep you deserve. Use it only for sleeping, and sex. Doing this will send subconscious cues to your brain that will help it associate the bed with sleeping.

Take a steamy shower. A drop in core body temperature prepares your body for sleep. So an hour before bedtime, take a warm shower or relax in the bathtub. Once you've cooled down, your body will be set for slumber and you will get the good night sleep you deserve.

Keep off the uppers. Coffee, cigarettes and alcohol are some of the stuffs you definitely need to avoid before going to bed. They may relax and help you fall asleep, but when the effect wears out they can cause fragmented sleep during the reminder of the night. If you want to get the good night sleep you deserve, avoid coffee, alcohol and cigarettes. So hold off the "nightcap" and do not drink alcohol within six hours of bedtime. If you must smoke, have your last cigarette at least three hours before going to bed. Coffee should also be avoided after 3 pm

Wear an eye mask. Strapping an eye mask on will help blot out minuscule light sources such as the red LCD screen of your alarm clock or the dim glow of the computer screensaver. These minuscule light sources are surprising sleep obstructions, which your brain can detect even when your eyes are closed. These things will deprive you of the good night sleep you deserve.

Count sheep. The old adage about "counting sheep" (or any other animal, for that matter) really works, because it helps you focus on a series of ascending or descending numbers which in turn keeps your brain too busy to focus on anxious thoughts. Adding a visual image (such as the sheep hopping over a fence or walking down a flight of stairs while counting) can give you the sense that you're moving deeper and deeper into slumber. This will help you get the good night sleep you deserve.

Melt muscle tension to help you get the good night sleep you deserve. When you are anxious, your nervous system goes into overdrive and tenses you up all over. To remove the tension, imagine it dissolving slowly through your toes. Then, move on to the stress on your calves, all the way to the top of your head. By the time you're done, you'll feel physically "looser" and primed for dreamland and you are on your way to get the good night sleep you deserve.

Automatic Action – Effortless Movement And Mastery

Effortless movement is letting the move execute itself while you observe. It is to be automatic and moving on autopilot. Moving automatically is the way to mastery and effortless action. Let your subconscious take over. Act the way it wants to act. Express whatever wants to come out. Your subconscious will learn by itself how to act better. It will integrate improvements more easily into itself. Say to yourself "I have no mind, I have no will, I have no control, I am the vessel, and it is doing it through me."

You are not the one making the movement but you are the movement itself. Watch it come and go as if it was not yours. You will slip into a steady space where you feel quite empty. A state of emptiness. Feel as if you're not in control of your body. Surrender control of your body completely. Imagine that your body is being used like a puppet. Pretend that it's not you. This will result in a feeling of effortlessness and detachment. Allowing your subconscious to take over is surrendering control to God to do the movements through you. Detachment is trusting and surrendering to God.

Acting automatically and effortlessly is acting at the level of mastery. It is the ability to detach and observe while imagining that your body is moving by itself. This is the key to acting naturally. As technique asserts itself, the player is free to feel something while playing! Feel, do not think. Act from a state of mindlessness. The right art is purposeless, aimless! The "purposelessness" and "aimlessness" is a means of establishing ourselves as a channel.

The consciousness of self is the greatest hindrance to the proper execution of all physical action. The highest state of action is the selfless state. It is a state where you are in the flow of the universal mind. You're moving and not moving at all. It is not, "I am doing it," but rather "it is happening through me," or "it is doing it through me." This state of super-consciousness is the opposite of self-consciousness. In that moment, time disappears. It is impossible to be self-conscious and totally involved in the activity at the same time. Consciousness of the self is a barrier between the actor and the action. As you forget your own presence, you attain a state of oneness with the activity and become absorbed in a way that defies the passage of time.

Move around without trying, without caring. The more you feel you can walk away any time, the more powerful your action becomes. More maneuverability, more freedom and more creativity will result. Perfection is something you surrender to. It overcomes you. Just let yourself move automatically. The feeling that you should be practicing more should be ignored. You have to reach a zone where time is timeless and effort is effortless, and becoming great is not important!

We have to re-program the urge to control. We are so used to analyzing everything that we act in narrow, restricted ways. Some people think that this is dedication and humility, but it is just plain inhibition. Analysis should not come during the action, but well after the whole experience is over. Do not analyze while doing, analyze later. Action should occur totally devoid of thought. Fear of failure and frustration are barriers against creativity. It is better to act poorly from a liberated state than to act well from a state of bondage.

Absolute economy of motion comes from letting your body take control and do only what it knows how to do. The effort it takes for you to act equals the distance between you and mastery. Mastery is not about being able to do something correctly most of the time, or even all of the time. Mastery is being able to do it perfectly every time without thought. This state of unconsciousness is realized only when, completely empty and rid of the self, you become one with the perfecting of your technical skill.

Do something not according to the way it is supposed to be done but do it in a way that feels right for you. Your feeling of an action may seem so natural that it might persuade other people that it is the new way to do it. Strength comes from doing what is most natural for you at the moment. Instead of people sensing your limitations, they may marvel at how many ways you can conceive of doing the same thing. If you obey your inner self too much, someone might call you a genius! Different variations of an action are likely to develop naturally as time goes on. The most honest way to act is to stay out of the way.

Advantages of Mathematics

Many of us wondered about the advantages of Mathematics during our childhood days. Many of us were not able to comprehend the benefits of mathematics beyond the daily usage of calculating simple numbers. Let us see in detail what are some of the benefits of learning mathematics and marveling at this arduous subject at early age.

The importance of mathematics is two-fold, it is important in the advancement of science and two, it is important in our understanding of the workings of the universe. And in here and now it is important to individuals for personal development, both mentally and in the workplace.

Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is important in everyday life, many forms of employment, science and technology, medicine, the economy, the environment and development, and in public decision-making.

One should also be aware of the wide importance of Mathematics, and the way in which it is advancing at a spectacular rate. Mathematics is about pattern and structure; it is about logical analysis, deduction, calculation within these patterns and structures. When patterns are found, often in widely different areas of science and technology, the mathematics of these patterns can be used to explain and control natural happenings and situations. Mathematics has a pervasive influence on our everyday lives, and contributes to the wealth of the individual.

The study of mathematics can satisfy a wide range of interests and abilities. It develops the imagination. It trains in clear and logical thought. It is a challenge, with varieties of difficult ideas and unsolved problems, because it deals with the questions arising from complicated structures. Yet it also has a continuing drive to simplification, to finding the right concepts and methods to make difficult things easy, to explaining why a situation must be as it is. In so doing, it develops a range of language and insights, which may then be applied to make a crucial contribution to our understanding and appreciation of the world, and our ability to find and make our way in it.

Increasingly, employers are looking for graduates with strong skills in reasoning and problem solving – just the skills that are developed in a mathematics and statistics degree.

Let us look at a few examples. The computing industry employs mathematics graduates; indeed, many university computing courses are taught by mathematicians. Mathematics is used to create the complex programming at the heart of all computing. Also cryptography, a form of pure mathematics, is deployed to encode the millions of transactions made hourly via the Internet and when we use debit or credit cards. Mathematics and Computer Science is a popular degree choice, and four-year degrees with a placement in industry are also available. The latter give graduates plenty of relevant experience to increase their employability.

Mathematics led to the perfect ratios shown in Renaissance painting. The study of astronomy in the early times of its inception demanded the expansion of our understanding of mathematics and made possible such realizations as the size and weight of the earth, our distance from the sun, the fact that we revolve around it, and other discoveries that allowed us to move forward in our body of knowledge without which we would not have any of our modern marvels of technology.

The computer itself is a machine built upon the principles of mathematics, being an invention so important as to bring about an economic revolution of efficiency in data communication and processing.

Chemotherapy: 8 Common Myths and Misconceptions Debunked

Doctors around the world have been advising chemotherapy to patients since decades for the treatment of different ailments. However, patients are still concerned about the use of chemotherapy drugs and the associated side effects, no matter how effective the treatment turns out to be for them.

Chemotherapy is most often used during cancer treatment. Cancer is a life-threatening disease and the mere thought of being diagnosed with it shakes a normal person terribly, let alone patients who actually get it. Cancer diagnosis at the right time is a key to effective cancer treatment, which is most often delivered through chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, or targeted drug therapy.

Presumed Chemotherapy Side Effects

Just like any other drug, chemotherapy drugs may have their side effects too. However, the point here is to understand that not all patients experience these side effects. In fact, some of the patients may not experience any of these chemo side effects at all.

Chemotherapy may, in fact, a few healthy cells in the body. The normal cells that are most likely to get affected by chemotherapy drugs include the hair follicles and cells in the bone marrow, reproductive system, digestive tract, and the oral cavity. The effect of the chemotherapy drugs on these areas, however, depends on the type of medicine used and the intensity of treatment.

A majority of people are worried about the type of chemo side effects that they are likely to experience after the treatment. The following are some of the common chemo side effects:

  1. Fatigue
  2. Bruising and infection
  3. Weight fluctuation
  4. Changes in libido
  5. Diarrhea and constipation
  6. Problems related to tongue, throat, or mouth
  7. Mood swings
  8. Anemia
  9. Changes in appetite

Chemotherapy side effects are not as bad as they may seem to a lot of people, and the next sections talk about it a bit more in detail.

Is chemotherapy really bad?

Chemotherapy is not at all bad for any cancer patient. An effective use of chemotherapy drugs results in the elimination of the cancer cells, thus relieving patients of the symptoms that they may be experiencing.

Oncologists are usually pro-active when it comes to the management of chemo side effects. They may employ a few strategies to manage chemotherapy side effects or prevent them from manifesting themselves in the patients after the treatment.

Some of these strategies include the following:

  • Administration of medications before chemotherapy that prevent side effects
  • They try avoiding the use of multiple drugs at the same time that cause similar side effects
  • They keep the chemotherapy drug dosage high enough to kill cancer cells but low enough to affect normal cells

In some patients, however, a few chemo side effects are still observed. These side effects occur only when the drugs target a few rapidly growing healthy cells as well, in addition to the cancer cells. For example, hair follicles are rapidly growing cells that may be targeted by chemotherapy drugs during treatment. This results in hair loss.

But this is just half the truth. To know the facts associated with some of the common chemotherapy myths and misconceptions, read the section below.

Common Myths and Facts

Myth #1: Every cancer patient who undergoes chemotherapy experiences complete hair loss.

Fact: This is a completely false chemotherapy fact that people tend to believe. Not all chemotherapy drugs trigger hair fall in patients as different chemotherapy drugs have separate mechanisms to curb the proliferation of tumor cells in the case of different cancers. There are only a handful of drugs that may trigger hair fall resulting in hair thinning, but never complete hair loss.

Nowadays oncologists prefer the use of specific targeted medicines as chemotherapy drugs. These medicines are modified to target just the cancer cells while sparing all other types of rapidly dividing cells in the body.

In addition, oncologists specifically identify patients who may experience hair loss as one of the chemo side effects. Such patients are advised to undergo scalp cooling following chemotherapy. This therapy restricts the flow of blood to the scalp for a few hours. As a result, there are fewer chances that the hair follicles will get exposed to the chemotherapy drugs traveling through the blood.

Myth #2: Both men and women are not able to reproduce after chemotherapy.

Fact: This is one of the worst chemotherapy facts that people still believe. Gone are the days when people used to lose their fertility because of chemotherapy drugs. New advances in the field of medical technology now allow patients to conceive successfully after chemotherapy.

The medical oncologists make every effort to retain the fertility of the patient during chemotherapy. In high-risk women, the oncologist may prescribe a few medications before administering chemotherapy drugs to suppress the ovarian function.

In other cases, men and women may be advised to freeze their sperms and eggs, respectively, in a bank prior to chemotherapy. But this is not necessary in all cases. A majority of patients are able to conceive naturally after the treatment is over.

Myth #3: Chemotherapy can be avoided for there are plenty of other advanced cancer treatment options too.

Fact: It is true that there are plenty of other cancer treatment options but nothing works like the way chemotherapy drugs work. Chemotherapy works by either killing the cancer cells or by stopping them from growing any further. There is no other form of treatment that follows the same principle for cancer treatment.

Myth #4: An oncologist advises chemotherapy only in the case of worst cancers.

Fact: This is completely untrue. The reason behind the use of chemotherapy drugs varies from one patient to another. In some patients, chemotherapy drugs are used as an independent cancer treatment, while in others it is used in combination with radiotherapy. But it does not mean that the stage or grade of the cancer is the worst in both the cases and that is why chemotherapy is being used.

Chemo for brain is usually conducted in the cases wherein the patient is scheduled to undergo a surgery for cancer removal. The medical oncologists prefer to administer chemo for brain to shrink the tumor size before the surgery. It makes it easier for the cancer surgeons to remove the complete tumor in a single go during the surgery once the tumor size is shrunk.

Chemotherapy drugs are sometimes administered to keep the patient stable. The need to conduct chemotherapy is, therefore, carefully assessed by the oncologist at the time of preparation of treatment plan. If you have been advised chemotherapy, it does not mean that your cancer is bad.

Myth #5: Nausea and vomiting are the two prominent chemotherapy side effects.

Fact: General sickness in the form of nausea and vomiting were once the leading chemo side effects. However, this has considerably changed in the last few years. Now patients are prescribed a few medicines just before chemotherapy. These medications work by suppressing chemo side effects such as nausea and vomiting.

Some patients, however, may experience fatigue after a few chemotherapy sessions. Fatigue is one of the most common chemotherapy side effects that accumulate over a few sessions. By the time the patient has attended five to six chemotherapy sessions, they may start to experience this leading chemo side effect.

Myth #6: Chemotherapy drugs are administered through intravenous (IV) infusions that require a hospital stay.

Fact: IV infusion is just one of the modes through which chemotherapy drugs are administered. Not all drugs require the patient to stay at the hospital for IV infusion.

Now a majority of chemotherapy drugs are either taken orally at the hospital or at home. Some of them are applied topically or administered through an intramuscular injection. Thus, there is no need for the patient to stay at the hospital in such cases. Even in the case of IV infusion, patients are nowadays released on the same day once the chemotherapy drugs are successfully administered.

Myth #7: Chemotherapy costs are almost the same for the treatment of all types of cancers.

Fact: Not all chemotherapy drugs cost the same around the world and or within a country. Chemotherapy costs differ from one country to another and from one city to the other.

For example, the chemotherapy cost in India is much cheaper than any other Western country, including the US and the UK. This is because a majority ofchemotherapy drugs are manufactured in India itself. The ones that are not produced in the country are imported from other countries at a highly reasonable cost. The same may not be true about any other country.

In addition, the chemotherapy cost also depends on the type of drug used. The drug use depends on the type of cancer that needs to be treated. Some drugs cost more than the other and therefore, the difference in the price. For example, chemo for brain may cost more than chemo for skin cancer because of the use of a different set of drugs.

Myth #8: Immunotherapy is safer and more effective than chemotherapy.

Fact: Immunotherapy is one treatment that patients look forward to instead of chemotherapy for cancer management. But both these treatments have totally different mechanism of action. The former uses the immune system of the patient to kill cancer cells, while the latter directly kill the cancer cells.

For the same reason, immunotherapy is not so popular as it totally depends on the ability of the patient’s immune system to fight cancer cells. Even clinical studies have not yet confirmed the effectiveness of immunotherapy for the treatment of all forms of cancer.

Chemotherapy, on the other hand, has been in use for decades. It is highly successful in the treatment of cancer and its importance cannot be undermined by any other alternative treatment option, be it immunotherapy or something else.

Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia – Doctor, Please Do not Take Out My Spleen

Has your doctor told you that because of your uncontrollable low platelets you will have to take out your spleen? He has been trying to control your platelets by all means possible. He has exhausted all his arsenal. So he has told you that your spleen must come out!

If this is so you must be worried since this is an operation. All operations have their risk. You really do not want to do this operation. Well there is a possibility that you can avoid this operation. Yes. I know you are anxious to know how. So read on because I am going to explain some things that you need to know before you take this big step.

First of all, it is not the spleen's fault. The spleen is doing it's job. It is not malfunctioning at all. The problem is in your platelets. There are some bad antibodies attached to them. This causes the spleen to not recognize your platelets. It considers them abnormal. So it destroys them.

So lets assumed that you want to fix a chair that keeps on making you fall because it has a bad leg. Would you consider it fixed if you actually broke one of the chair's leg? I do not think so. The cause is in your platelets. This is what needs to be addressed.

You can prevent a splenectomy (surgical removal of the spleen) by following a complete program for idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura. There is a better way. And you should really leave this surgery for a last resort after you have tried the natural alternatives for idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura.

This surgery has helped some. But many continue to suffer from idiopathic thrombocytopenia even after the surgery.

Follow a complete natural alternative for your idiopathic thrombocytopenia. I believe the results you will get will surprise you.

Kidney Dialysis and How it Works

When you have loss kidney function something need to be done to replace the cleansing of the blood from pollutants and to help remove fluid and that replacement is called "dialysis.

At first glance, this life saving dialysis machine looks like something from Star Wars, all the tubes and meters and it kind of looks like R2D2 except it's not walking around just sitting there beside you. The good news is your "little buddy" is your life saver because it is going to cleanse your body for you and get rid of what your body can not do on it own anymore.

Many people have a shunt in their arm where they hook up the dialysis machine and on one side of the machine the dialysate (the fluid they use) is going to flow and on the other side your blood is going to flow and when the blood is cleaned it returns to you. The dialysate also has minerals in it that are loss during dialysis, like calcium and potassium. More than likely they will also put your on a prescription for these same minerals. This type dialysis is called. "hemodialysis" and is usually done 3 times a week for 3 or 4 hours.

Another form of dialysis is called, "Peritoneal dialysis". In this type dialysis the dialysate is of glucose and minerals and is run through your stomach area. The dialysate is then left to clean your body of waste and pollutants and then drained and thrown away. The nice part of this treatment is that it is done at home and can even be done when your traveling. This treatment does not do quite as good as hemodialysis but because it is done more often during the day the methods of cleansing your body becomes about the same.

I can not stress this enough, on your days of dialysis, you are going to be tired and it's ok! Your body has just walked through in 3-4 hours what it normally takes to do in 48 hours. It's like running a mile in 4 minutes and you're going to be tired. The good news is the days you do not have dialysis, usually, you will gain some energy back and feel less exhausted. Do not try to do too much on your days that you have dialysis, it will only make you more tired than you already are and there is always tomorrow when you feel better to do what you need to do.

Neurobiology and Genetics of ADHD

Despite continued controversy, powerful new evidence regarding the biological underpinnings of ADHD have recently emerged. Repeated studies have shown the fact that controlling for confounding variables, the coefficient of heritability for ADHD is .8, or higher than that for Schizophrenia (.7), Intelligence (.5), or Breast Cancer (.3). This information is very compelling evidence for a biological explanation of ADHD, as it basically states that the chance of an identical twin having ADHD, if the other twin meets the diagnostic criteria, is 8 out of 10 times. These studies have been done in Australia, the United Kingdom and Sweden, as well as in various sites throughout the United States.

Dr. Joseph Biederman, one of the leading researchers in the world on ADHD indicates in a recent paper (Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, Lancet 2005; 366: 237-248) that candidate genes for ADHD have also been located. Continued research supports the likeli¬hood that ADHD is a genetic disorder with a combination of different genes being responsible for the expression of ADHD. This includes evidence of dysfunction with respect to the cortical networks involving dopamine D4 and D5 receptors, which have been proven to be instrumental in the pathogenesis of ADHD.

Structural abnormalities and imaging studies have also consistently sup¬ported the fact that frontalstriatal regions of the brain are very much central to the dysfunction associated with ADHD. This evidence includes neuropsychological deficits involving problems with set shifting, inhibition, working memory, planning, and sustained attention. Imaging studies have showed a volume reduction in many different areas of the brain, but particularly in the frontal and cingulate regions of the cerebrum, which are central to many of the functions and skills associated with attention and executive abilities.

In addition, the specificity and functional effects of the dopaminergic and noradrenergic agents used to treat ADHD are well documented and robust. Recent developments have included longer acting versions of both stimulant and non-stimulant medications, and research is very clear that the therapeutic effects of these medications are strong and unequivocal.

It should be mentioned that Dr. Biederman, in the same article mentioned previously, reports that objections are often raised as to the abuse potential of various stimulant medications. However, research has shown that medicating with stimulants has a protective or prophylactic effect on the development of substance abuse. This is contrary to anecdotal evidence that focuses exclusively on the few individuals who may abuse these substances, rather than scientifically analyzing the relevant data.

11 Reasons Why Dogs Bark and How You Can Stop Dog Barking

It is as natural for a dog to bark as it is for a kid to talk. So we should not expect a dog never to bark. However if the barking has become too excessive to the point of irritating the neighbours, you have to either move the dog away from build-up areas, confine it to a sound proof room or train the dog to stop barking. To stop the dog from barking, we have to first understand the cause of the problem.

Let us explore the reasons for dog barking:

#1. Communication

Barking is a form of communication. If you listen closely there are different tones and different types of barking.

#2. Intrusion

Dogs are territorial and protective against any intruders. A guard dog’s duty is to guard the property. Naturally it will bark to alert you to possible intruders when it sense any intrusion by people or dogs. The closer the threat, the louder the barking. When the dog is aggressive, it takes on a threatening posture, with a high tail and ears up and forward.

#3. Spirits

Some people say that animals are sensitive to the presence of unseen spirits or ghosts.

#4. Reaction to Noise

Some dogs bark when car drives by, when the doorbell rings, or when the neigbour’s dog bark.

#5. Attention

Dogs bark because they want attention. They want something.Maybe they are hungry or thirsty. They want to go outside to play. They wants a treat.

#6. Boredom

Dogs can be frustrated if they are confined to the same place for a long period of time, or they have been left outside day and night. Dogs are pack dog and do not like to be left alone for long period. If they become bored or sad, they will bark.

#7. Fear

They bark when they are afraid, be it objects, people, places, other animals, or loud noise such as thunder and fireworks. How do you tell if the dog is afraid? The ears are back and the tails are held low.

#8. Excitement

Dogs can be playful and excited when greeting people or other animals. It’s usually a happy bark, accompanied with tail wags and sometimes jumping.

#9. Health Problem

We should not discount that barking can be cause by deafness because it cannot hear itself barking. It could be due to age related dementia.

#10. Separation Anxiety

Dogs when left alone can suffer from separation anxiety. They exhibit symptoms such as pacing, depression and destruction.

#11. Compulsive barking

Compulsive barkers bark just to hear the sound of their voices. They also often make repetitive movements as well such as running in circles.

It is a natural instinct for a dog to bark and we should not suppress this instinct.

The dog must be taught when to bark and when not to bark. When the dog bark for a good reason, for example someone is at the door or entering your territory, praise the dog. When you let the guest enter your house, you give the dog a command to stop barking.

Put your finger to your lips and give the command “Quiet” in a calm and firm voice.

Train your dog to understand the word ‘Quiet’.

However, if the dog barks at the wrong time or for the wrong reason, then we should not let this problem continue. A dog barking become unwelcome when the dog will not stop barking and such incessant barking disturb the neighbours especially in build up areas.

To solve the problem, find out what is the cause of the problem.

If the barking is due to boredom then bring the dog out for a work every day. Play with it for at least an hour a day. If the barking is for the attention, then give it sufficient attention by spending time with it. A dog is not a toy to be left alone; it is a living animal with feelings and need affection and interaction. Spend time by taking it for a long walk or run. Play ball. Take a trip to the dog park. When the dog is tired, it will be quiet.

Do send the dog to a vet for a checkup as some medical problems can cause excessive barking. These problem can range from dementia, brain disease, pain, to senility.

There are a few methods to solve a dog barking problem.

Someone suggested a beans-in-a-tin solution. Put beans in a tin and seal it. When the dog is barking, shake the tin vigorously near the dog and say ‘No’ firmly.

As soon as the dog stops barking, praise him.

If you want the fast and effective way of stopping the dog from barking, let Harry Quek show you the Koehler method in his personal dog training program.
