Sound Therapy As Medicine to Stimulate the Vagus Nerve

What is the vagus nerve and why is it so important?

Simply put, the vagus nerve is the commander-in-chief of your inner nerve center, regulating all of your major organs. This is the longest cranial never, which starts in the brain just behind the ears and connects to all the body's major organs. It sends fibers from your brain-stem to all of your visceral organs, and is literal the commander of your inner nerve center, communicating nerve impulses to every organ in your body. The word vagus literally means "wanderer", because it wanders through the body from the brain all the way to the fertility organs, hitting everything in between. When it comes to mind-body connection, the vagus nerve is monumental, since it reaches all the major organs except for the adrenal and thyroid glands.

This is an important nerve to every organ it is in contact with. It is what helps control anxiety and depression in the brain. How we connect with one another is closely related to the vagus nerve as its attached to nerves that tune our ears to speech, it coordinates eye contact, and those which regulate expressions. This nerve also has the power to affect proper hormone release in the body which keeps our mental and physical systems healthy.

It is the vagus nerve that is responsible for increasing stomach acidity and digestive juice secret for ease in digestion in the stomach. When stimulated, it can also help you to absorb vitamin B12. When it is not working properly, you can then expect to have serious gut issues such as Colitis, IBS, and Re-flux, just to name a few. Re-flux issues are due to a vagus nerve issue because the it also controls the esophagus. It's the improper reflex of the esophagus that causes conditions like Gerd and Re-flux.

The vagus nerve also helps control the heart rate and blood pressure, preventing heart disease. While in the liver and pancreas, it's this nerve that controls blood glucose balance, preventing diabetes. When it passes through the gallbladder, the vagus nerve helps to release bile, which is what assays your body in eliminating toxins and breaking down fat. While in the bladder, it's this nerve that Promotes general kidney function, increasing blood flow, thereby improving filtration in our bodies. When the vagus nerve gets to the spleen, activation will reduce infection in all target organs. This nerve even has the power to control fertility and orgasms in women. An inactive or blocked vagus nerve can wreak havoc through the mind and body.

Now that we know that the vagus nerve is connected to all the major organs and proper functioning of those organisms, we can easily conclude that any disorder, illness, or disease of the mind, body, or spirit, can be reversed or even cured by activating and stimulating the vagus nerve. So you will indeed see positive effects from vagus nerve stimulation on issues such as anxiety disorders, heart disease, headaches and migraines, fibromyalgia, alcohol addiction, circulation, gut issues, memory issues, mood disorders, MS, and even cancer.

There are many documented ways to stimulate the vagus nerve such as singing or chanting, laughter, yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, exercise in general, and sound just to name a few. Singing and laughter works the muscles at the back of your throat which activates the nerve. Mild exercising and exercising in general increases gut flus which means that the vagus nerve has been stimulated. A regimented Yoga practice can also increase activation of this nerve due to the movements but also the Meditation and OM-ing helps stimulate the vagus nerve. All of these ways you can use stimulate the vagus nerve have one thing in common: Sound !!

Findings of resonant frequency of organs is occurring worldwide by doctors to aid in vibrating the body back into a state of health, and transfuses illness and diseases such as anxiety, PTSD, migraines, depression, memory issues, chronic pain, sleep disorders, and even cancer. "You can really look at disease as a form or disharmony," says Dr. Gaynor director of oncology at the Strang-Cornell Cancer Prevention Center in New York, and author of Sounds of Healing. "We know that sound and music have a profound effects on the immune system, which clearly do have a lot to do with cancer."

There was also a study in April of 2016, that involved patient with Alzheimer's Disease. Researchers from the University of Toronto, Wilfrid Laurier University, and the Baycrest Center Hospitals conducted a study of these patients in different stages of the disease, subjecting them to sound simulation at 40 hertz. They noted "promising" results with cognition, clarity, and alertness. Lee Bartel, one of the authors of these finds stated that, "Parts of the brain appear to be at the same communication frequency, and that frequency is about 40 Hz. it – the two parts of the brain that want to talk to each other, like the thalamus and the hippo campus, the short-term memory to the long-term memory, they can not talk to each other, they will not communicate , so you will not have long-term memory. " Bartel explained that the sound-simulation treatment at 40 Hz leads to an "increased" frequency, which allows "parts of the brain to talk to each other again."

One specific school of thought comes from a French otolaryngologist, Alfred A Tomatis, who believes that the primary function of the ear is to provide all the cells of the body with electrical stimulation, thereby "toning up the whole system and accounting greater democracy dynamism to the human being "(Tomatis 1978) He believes that sounds redundant in high harmonics are considered charging sounds, and sounds abundant in lower tones are considered to be dis-charging sounds. Tomatis claimed to have successfully treated a wide variety of illness through sound because they were all related to issues with the inner ear. Just a few of the issues he's successfully treated were stuttering, depression, ADD, concentration issues, and disorders related to balance.

There is another study that suggests that the Tomatis Method is supportive to assisting children with ADD. "Results revealed statistically significant improvements for the Tomatis when compared to the non-Tomatis group: the experimental group showed the significant improvements in processing speed, phonological awareness, phonemic decoding efficiency when reading, behavior, and auditory attention."

Sound is rapidly becoming one of the most loudly buzzed about gatekeepers of health in alternative healing modalities today! Sound is a brilliant implementation of common medicine to stimulate the vagus nerve promoting the health and vitality of all the organs in your body. Do this through sound healing and Crystal Chakra Singing Bowls. Clear Quartz is called the 'Master Healer' because it has the ability to amplify, transform, and transfer energy. When working with these quartz crystal bowls, the effects on the organs, tissues, and cells, along with the circulatory, endocrine, and metabolic systems are intense. The tones from the crystals are heard by the ear, felt in the body, stimulate the vagus nerve, enabling the vibrations to echo also through each Chakra center in the body, creating a balanced and rejuvenated mind, body & spirit!

How To Manage When A Health Crisis Hits!

A brain tumor! Really?

This was my thought last April 2012 when I was diagnosed with a 3 centimeter tumor in the left occipital region of my brain. What happened to simple illnesses like a cold, or if that was not getting my attention how about a less life threatening sickness? Of course those questions can not be answered, so I made a decision. I would do the best I could and use all the tools available to me (medical and other wise) to manage this crisis, learn from it, grow with the experience and free myself from it! This is the first of several articles that will outline the process of healing and understanding how to make the best out of a health crisis.

My Story: It is traditional at Passover Dinner for all participants to read. When it came to my turn, I tried to read and could not! Of course I went into immediate denial. "I'm tired from all the cooking" and "I just got a new puppy". Well that didnt make a difference. What did was my good friend Judy who yelled at me to "Call the doctor." "But I was in the middle of a TV show", I complained. She and my husband would not leave me alone so I called. Two days later I had an MRI and 4 hours later I was up at Cedars Sinai Hospital with the best neurosurgeon in California. Three days later I was operated on to remove the tumor.

The good news … they got it all … the bad news … it was aggressive and I had to do radiation for 6 weeks and take chemotherapy pills for 6 weeks. The protocol for treatment is taking 5 days of chemotherapy pills every month for a year. I have also entered a clinical trial at Cedars Sinai for a vaccine that will disable these cells. The end result of the surgery is that I am healthy but still am unable to read or drive … darn … more to deal with! I believe that we have lessons to learn from the crisis in our lives. I will address that important issue in a later article.

I told you my "story" because I did not want you to get stuck on what happened. What is important is what I decided to do about it and the journey that I have been on for the last six months.

When first diagnosed, after the initial ripple of fear and apprehension, we move into action. We listened to the doctors and choose who we want to be on our team. There is a lot of pressure on everyone to do the 'right' thing. But what is right? How do you know what is right for you? The questions flood your brain. The tendency is to give the decision making over to the doctors or to family members. Do not do that! Keep your cool. Feel the emotions that come up. Then come back to yourself, your truth, your intelligence, and what you believe in. This is the only place where you can really listen to yourself. It became identical to me that I needed traditional and holistic treatment. I saw it as a full circle. Pretty simple. Now I had to find out what the circle contained.

I knew that I needed an advocate, a therapist who could keep me in tune with myself so that the fears did not take over. I knew I was going to do the Western medical treatments, even though I have always been suspicious of the traditional medical society. I took a leap of faith and realize that they are experts in treating tumors, are expertly trained, and I would get good advice and guidance. I listened to my family and friends and made my own decisions. I checked out every option and idea that was presented to me. I believe that when an idea comes to me I should pay attention. It is an opportunity that may or may not be right for me. I decided yes on a nutritionist, yes with my holistic medical doctor (which I already had), and yes to a clinical trial for an anti-cancer vaccine. I decided no to acupuncture and a few other healing modalities simply because I was overwhelmed with doctor appointments. I, of course, said YES to hypnosis and guided imagery. I have practiced hypnotherapy for 30 years and it is such a big part of me. The difference is that I allowed other practitioners (my friends) to work with me. I have some wonderful CDs to listen to and hypnosis is multi-faceted in that I can work on stress, fear, negativity as well as healing, symptoms alleviation, and strengthening my health.

My mindset was important. I chose a therapist who believes that once the tumor is there the crisis that caused it is over and the healing was in progress. It resonated with me. I have never seen myself as sick or unhealthy.

The articles that will follow will outline for you how I keep my strength, my power and my patience. They will discuss different healing modalities and how to pick what is right for you. The last six months have been a journey of letting go, re learning what I took for granted, compensating, allowing myself to be taken care of and receiving. I'm learning to control my urge to be in control! This is the toughest job I have ever had. As I navigate through life, sometimes I feel like I'm failing and do not get it, and at other times I feel very wise and powerful. When friends, family, doctors, people I meet admire me for how I am handling it, I just smile quietly inside.

Home Healthcare Products

When we have elderly people at home who needs all time medical care we depend on Home Healthcare products rather than rushing to hospital or doctor frequently for a simple check up or any kind of regular medical support. Scientific researches have made it easy for us. Today we have unlimited ranges of products available to choose from according to our need and budget.

Let’s take a look at the top common products that are needed frequently and used widely and are easily available. The first is a blood pressure monitor. It checks systolic, diastolic pressure and pulse rate. It usually has a display screen to show the reading. Many modern machines store as many as 60 readings, which mean we can monitor the improvements for 2 months at least. Companies are even attaching alarm clock facility with it to remind the patient for regular check up of blood pressure. Sphygmomanometers are also used for the same purpose. Only the look of the device and the way it measures the blood pressure is different.

The second thing that is used is a complete blood analyzer. There is a kit available for analyzing blood. It measures blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, Triglycerides, ketone, etc. The complete solution for any blood test related needs. Third we have the digital thermometer. It displays the temperature in just 10 seconds and gives a beep sound when done. Glucose monitoring devices are also used. In case of diabetic patient, regular measurement of blood glucose is very important. The device collects the blood by piercing the finger tip and within few seconds the result will be shown in the digital display screen.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) devices measure glucose in the tissue fluid in case of acute diabetes mellitus. There is a sensor attached to it that continuously measure glucose level.

Some people use insulin delivery devices. Ranges of products include insulin syringes, insulin pens, insulin injectors, insulin pumps. The main purpose of all these products is to administer insulin to the patient’s body in case patient has insulin deficiency and advised to take insulin by doctor.

Inhalation devices could be purchased as well. The types of devices available are MDI, MDI & Spacer, Turbuhaler, Nebulizer, Handihaler, Diskus etc. These devices are great support for the asthma patients anywhere, anytime. You may even need to consider acupuncture needles. These are needed for physiotherapy treatments and can be used at home.

An electronic pill dispenser has alarms to alert patient at the time of medication, selects the pill and dose and doesn’t repeat in case any dose is missed. Arthritis and orthopedic aids can be wonderful for some patients. When any organ is injured it makes all daily, easy tasks tougher for us. Arthritis aids products help us do our work on our own at home. These products include dressing aid, button hook & zipper pull, food bumper, hip kit, special utensils, bathroom aids, arm support, mobility aids, heel protectors, pedal support & exerciser, elbow protector, pill crusher etc.

There are many more products in the market and the ranges are huge. Home Healthcare solutions are really helpful for long term treatment phase. These products reduce the time we spend running to hospital or visiting a doctor or therapist and all these are cost effective too when long term need is there.

The Benefits of Homeopathy

For those looking for an alternative to traditional western medicine, and something holistic in nature, consider homeopathy. Homeopathy is based on the theory that you treat "like with like". Or rather, when the body is sick or diseased, you need to cure or treat it with whatever caused the disease to begin with.

At the outset this may not sound like very good theory. However, since the 1800's people have been using homeopathy to cure their ailments. Homeopathy is the second most widely used treatment in primary medicine around the world. Therefore, there must be something to the benefits of homeopathy that have so many practitioners using it and so many patients treating it as well.

With homeopathy, the practitioner uses minute amounts of the natural healing ingredient or remedy to heal the body. Because the remedy is so extremely diluted there is no risk of toxicity to the body.

So first and foremost, the greatest benefit of homeopathy is its ability to "do no harm" to the body. This alternative method of treating the body is healthy enough to treat children and can help women who are pregnant as well and may be extremely limited in the remedies they can take to cure themselves in things like headaches, stomachaches and allergy symptoms.

Rather than advising patients to take multiple medicines to cure a single disease, homeopathy focuses on just a single treatment. So you do not have to worry about building up toxic side effects from multiple medicines in your system.

Because homeopathic treatment is comprehensive, the treatment for a patient is individualized. The entire person as a whole is taken into consideration when being treated, as well as their thoughts and feelings. A homeopath takes the necessary time with their patient, to get to know them so they are able to better understand and then treat their problem. Like a "therapist" for the brain, homeopathy is "therapy" for the body as well as the mind together.

Another excellent benefit of homeopathy is its ability to treat not only diseases but addictions as well. Because of homeopathy's comprehensive approach, it addresses the needs of someone who is trying to stop their addiction at the outside during the detoxification process. And it also addresses the issues over the long term as to what caused an individual to become addicted in the first place.

Because pharmaceutical companies are not involved in expensive clinical drug trials or the creation of homeopathic remedies and treatments, the cost of homeopathic treatment is much less than what's used in Western-style medicine. Also, in some countries, homeopathic medicines have been incorporated into the healthcare system and therefore are covered under health insurance plans.

There are numerous benefits to homeopathy that open up a whole new outlook on the world of opportunities to get healthy the natural or holistic way.

Do Nitric Oxide Supplements Work?

Nitric Oxide is a gas formed in the body by the breakdown of L-Arginine to L-Citrulline through an enzyme group called Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS). Although NO2 is used for many purposes, it's ability to increase blood flow will be discussed in this article.

In general supplement companies claim that NO2 supplements can:

Increase recovery post workout
Increase resistance to muscular fatigue
Increase muscular work output

These three claims are largely based on the assumption that an increase in blood flow to muscle tissue will enable users to experience the claims that supplement companies put forward. Obviously there are many other variable factors that can influence your muscle mass growth and strength gains for example you general diet and training. So the claim is that if your diet and training are in place, taking a NO2 supplement will enable your body to build more muscle mass that the same diet and training regime without the nitric oxide supplementation.

There is absolutely no doubt that NO2 supplements increase blood flow. Just ask anyone how has taken a nitric oxide supplement and they will tell you blood flow is substantially increased. But does this blood flow actually produce the results that are claimed? Or is it mostly a mental advantage from feeling the pump!

Vasodilation is the process of a relaxation of blood vessels, allowing them to carry more blood to and from working muscle tissue. Vasodilation (to high levels) is triggered by the sunset of exercise as the need for oxygen and nutrients is heightened during this time. The process of vasodilation is highly influenced by nitric oxide.

High levels of nitric oxide aid in the conversion of an enzyme (GTP) into another (cGMP) which serves as an important messenger to, among others, the relaxation of smooth vascular muscle in order to create vasodilatory effects. Therefore, if levels of nitric oxide are inhibited vasodilation may not occur to the amount that allows maximum performance.

In essence, vasodilation occurs when high levels of nutrients need to be transferred into muscles for energy production. Vasodilation itself is highly influenced, and limited by the amount of NO2 that is available as it has been observed that a limited production of nitric oxide can lead to vasoconstriction.

It can be suggested that before that if we can enable the body to produce adequate amounts of nitric oxide, proper levels of vasodilation can occur, enabling the body to transport ample amounts of nutrients to working muscle for maximum power output.

What Should Be Supplemented To Increase NO2 Levels?

Most 'NO2' supplements on the market currently use ingredients such as

Citrulline Malate

As nitric oxide is produced by the conversion of l-arginine it can be assumed that supplementing with l-arginine will have an effect on NO levels. However the evidence as yet shows no correlation between oral arginine supplementation and nitric oxide levels. Unfortunately l-arginine concentration does not directly affect the rate of nitric oxide production. Citrulline, the amino acid that l-arginine is converted into in the NO2 conversion process has actually been shown to have a greater effect of nitric oxide levels with oral supplementation. However these amino acids alone do not seem to have a direct effect on nitric oxide levels.

Insulin is an incredibly important hormone that allows nutrients, including glucose to be transported to muscle cells and has been shown to be a regulator in vasodilation and blood flow.

It is important to discuss insulin levels as it has been studied that the effects of insulin on vasodilation are dependent on insulin sensitivity ie how much insulin can be released when carbohydrates are ingested. These studies have concluded that nitric oxide production by insulin can decrease in people that are insulin 'resistant' rather than people that are sensitive to the effects of insulin release.

It can be extrapolated that a heightened in insulin levels can produce hyper vasodilation and in fact, this has been shown in resulting studies.

How Can Insulin Be Raised To Spark Vasodilation?

In fact the products mentioned earlier that are used in many nitric oxide products do increase insulin sensitivity in the body, therefore they do increase vasodilation but through heightened levels of insulin rather than a direct effect on l-arginine conversion.

How Are NO2 Supplements Best Supplied?

Insulin has a linear relationship with the ingestion of carbohydrates; if large amounts of carbohydrates are ateen larger amounts of insulin are released. Therefore many powdered NO2 supplements will combine their ingredients with simple fast acting carbohydrates such as dextrose in order to increase vasodilation and 'the pump'. These carbohydrates are shuttled to muscle literally forcing the carbohydrates into the cells and filling them up like a balloon creating a larger muscle mass.

Powdered products are usually taken pre-workout only as supplementation of simple sugars is not recommended at any other time. Nitric oxide pills do not contain the sugars and will produce a slight effect on vasodilation by increasing your insulin sensitivity. Therefore carbohydrate ingestion is recommended around your workout to allow for the greatest chance of vasodilation trough insulin use.

The Claims

Earlier the three most common claims of the supplement companies were stated and in general it can be concluded that NO2 supplements can produce those results (obviously there are other factors that can influence this). If vasodilation occurs with an increased insulin response from supplementation of NO2 products it can enable users to gain better results from supplementation.

Knowing the Cost of Dental Implant

Many of us think that since dental implants provide a close to perfect solution to our problems regarding missing tooth or teeth, they probably cost a lot. However, this is not always the case because if you search hard enough and you are well-informed, you can find a clinic that provides the lowest cost of dental implant.

Many people are seeking for this solution. The benefits that it offers are certainly something that we have been missing even with the use of dentures in the past. With this, we can say that dental implants are a must if we want to get back our lost tooth or teeth. Along with this, getting implants can have a great positive effect on our overall oral health.

Are They Worth It?

Dental Implants are usually titanium replacements that are surgically placed into the jawbone and allowed to infuse with it for a stable result. They have replaced the impractical and unsafe use of dentures in having a complete set of teeth once again. Although dentures were able to provide an appearance of having a complete set of teeth, using them poses problems especially to the adjunct teeth. Moreover, dentures are difficult to work with especially with the need to use glues to keep them stable.

The cost of dental implant may vary and it can also change depending on how many teeth you need to be replaced. But compared to dentures, you do not need to buy adhesives every now and then. You also do not need them to be adjusted, which is a bit cost if you choose to wear dentures.

With this, it is quite obvious that implants are worth it.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implant

Here are a few factors that can affect that cost of dental implant.

1. Material – the material to be used for the implant can directly affect the cost. The cost is dictated by the quality of the material to be used. At present, the most common material used is titanium. This is durable and can be trusted to last a very long time.

2. Number of Teeth To Be Replaced – the more teeth you need replaced, the higher the cost of dental implant will be. Most clinics bill the cost of per tooth basis so you can already have a rough idea how they get the total.

3. Dental Center – different dental centers have different rates. Choose the one that gives the lowest rates. If you can find one that provides free consultations, it's one of the best choices.

4. Insurance – Some health insurance cover this kind of dental surgery. If yours does, you can cut down the amount you need to pay. If your insurance covers 100% of the cost then you can get your implants without spending any amount.

5. Surgery Needs – some patients need other surgeries prior to the implant procedure. This is determined during consultation. Common surgeries are bone grafting and sinus lift to obtain a larger area where the implant can be placed. If you need other surgeries, expect the cost of dental implant to be higher.

Tips For Purchasing Prescription Drugs Online

Are you looking to buy Ambien online? Then, there are a few things that you need to know. Ambien is the most commonly prescribed medicine to help with sleeping disorders and issues related to insomnia. If you experience sleeping difficulties, stress or any other problems indicated by using Ambien, your doctor may recommend you this drug.

Ambien is a hypnotic, short-acting drug that works by affecting the anterior lobes of your brain. As your body breaks down active ingredient, changes take place in these portions of your brain, helping you to not only fall sleep but also to stay sleep. The drug is appropriate for people suffering from brain damage, as well as those who have semi-conscious coma. Ambien contains Zolpidem, which has a tendency to break down and get absorbed in your blood stream. You can feel the effects of this drug within 20 minutes after its use.

A lot of information can be found regarding Ambien. This medicine has an outstanding safety profile. Selling Ambien online is permitted in many countries, while it is forbidden in others. Thus, it is important to check out your local rules and regulations if you're purchasing Ambien online. You can find a large number of websites offering Ambien. It is important to investigate the credibility of these websites before purchasing the drug from them.

The largest benefit of purchasing Ambien online is that it may cost you significantly less than purchasing the drug from local pharmacy. The reason for this is that online retailers have lower costs to pay and often take advantage of bulk buying discounts. Purchasing Ambien in big quantities can further lower the price.

Although there are many large, legitimate websites offering genuine Ambien, there are some small sites that sell fake Ambien online. You should avoid such websites at all costs. There are many ways to do so. First, you need to make sure that the website where you are entering credit card information is secure (eg http: //). Secondly, it is important to make sure that the website / company provides its contact details that include a phone number and physical address. Lastly, you should try to find reviews about that site. If there are a large number of negative reviews about a site, it's better to purchase from somewhere else.

Often, you will require a prescription to buy Ambien, even if you are buying on the internet. However, there are some sites that allow buyers to purchase Ambien online without providing the prescription beforehand. Given the fact that the majority of these websites are registered to overseas and international companies, it is important that you check regulations as well as the shipping expenses before ordering.

Things To Know About Drug Possession

Despite the fact that California's laws may be more tolerant than most places, there still are significant legal consequences of drug possession, growing and distribution. What follows is a brief overview of California ownership laws and possible repercussions for individuals looking at a conviction.

National legislation classifies substances into five Schedules. The great majority of drug convictions involve drugs ranked Schedule 1, which combines those drugs deemed the most dangerous with a reputation of abuse. These include cannabis, cocaine or crack, heroin, LSD, club drugs and others. In many instances, possession for personal utilization is a felony, but this can fluctuate in accordance with many circumstances, just some of which can be the variety and quantity of substance, geographical region, past criminal offsets, and if there was an objective to circulate . In cases associating marijuana, licensed medical marijuana patients get some extra considerations, but are limited in possession and cultivation amounts, and selling is a felony.

Possessing cannabis within this limit, or for being under the influence of drugs, are usually misdemeanors. Having any other Schedule 1 drug is a felony. Other felonies that incorporated marijuana are cultivation, distribution and trafficking.

California has a three-part process calculating how criminals will be reprimanded. This is as follows: the Base Term, which fluctuates by drug, is the least prison time whatever the case; Conduct Enhancements, which amplify the severity of the sentence according to any additional criminal acts – for instance, if an offender was not only making the drugs available but selling to minors, this will likely carry additional penalty charges; and Status Enhancements, which regard the offender's history and if it's the first arrest and, if not, if each of the terms of previous sentences or probation were adhered to.

Intended for non-violent people with substance abuse difficulties, there are a number of alternatives to imprisonmentment that provide drug abuse treatment, supervision, in-patient and out-patient therapy, and obligatory classes. Examine and talk over these alternatives with your lawyer.

Traditional Healing Practices – Implications for Healthcare

According to the 2011 census, India is inhabited by 104 million people classified as tribals (i.e., ~8.6% of the country’s population) belonging to over 550 tribal communities and approximately 277 ethnic groups. Tribal communities have totally submitted themselves to the forest setting and as a result of living so close to nature have, over the years, acquired a unique knowledge about the use of local resources. Given they hold precious knowledge on the specific use of a large number of wild plants one could almost consider them as the real custodians of medicinal plants. There is a growing understanding of the pivotal role medicinal plants play in providing herbal remedies to health maladies. According to a study conducted by the All India Coordinated Research Project on Ethno-biology (AICRPE), over ten thousand wild plant species are reported to be used by tribals for meeting their primary healthcare as well as food requirements. Further, there are approximately eight thousand medicinal plant varieties utilised by over two million traditional healers for treating ailments of both humans and livestock. Traditional medicine bequeathed from generation to generation is rich in domestic recipes for common health ailments. The best known examples of traditional medicine, differing in concept and protocol, are well developed systems such as ayurvedic and herbal treatments that have been widely used to sustain human health, especially in tribal regions of India.

1. Bhokar/Shelti – cures kidney stones, diarrhoea and stomach problem

2. Karvand – A rich source of Iron, Phosphorus and Vitamin C

3. Pathari – For ichthyosis (scaling of skin), xeroderma (dry skin). The roots are crushed and the extract is used

4. Kadu kand – Well cooked bulb slices can be consumed to get relief from stomach ache whereas paste of heartwood is used to cure wounds

5. Tetu – It is administered to women to treat leucorrhoea and menorrhoea

Traditional Medicine – Links to Maternal and Child Health

Traditional medicine is critical and has contributed tremendously to the healthcare of both the mother and the child in tribal regions. Jawhar block in Palghar district, Maharashtra is a tribal block having rich biodiversity, especially rice varieties having specific characteristics and uses. The tribal farmers have cultivated diverse rice varieties for purposes such as food security, instant energy provision during peak workload and medicinal use. This wonderful diversity of rice has formed the basis of a nutritious and secure diet for the vulnerable groups of the tribal population, that is, mothers, pregnant and lactating women and young children.

Various ongoing studies conducted by the NGOs such as BAIF Development Research Foundation in different tribal belts across Maharashtra found a number of rice varieties having specific medicinal properties and uses. For instance, one rice variety called ‘Mahadi’ has multiple health benefits; one of them is to cure weakness in women post pregnancy. Other rice varieties include Rajghudya and Kali Kudai (used to increase breast milk in lactating women); Kali Khadsi (for child’s growth and nutrition); Kasbai (used for nebulisation, which gives instant relief from cough) and Dangi (used for instant energy boost), among others.

Furthermore, traditional kitchens, serve as an in-house medical supply store. Tribal regions lack proper healthcare centres. Thus, most of the child deliveries take place at home and not in a hospital. The rate of institutional deliveries is slowly increasing but there is still a long way to go for this to become a rule, rather than an exception. Since most of deliveries take place at home, the traditional birth attendants play a major role in tribal regions. One of the practices performed by the birth attendants in villages is to use materials like cow dung as a disinfectant in the house that helps keep various diseases at bay. The various homemade medications, mostly herbal, for the mother and child are also prescribed predominantly. Restoring the mother to her original physiology is a challenge that the native healers often take up.

Habitat Loss – A Threat to Traditional Medicine

An impending threat to further proliferation of traditional medicine is the rampant loss of habitat. Unregulated harvesting of wild produce coupled with ecological degradation leading to extensive resource depletion and tribal landlessness (and even those who do have land are continuously losing their land to the government or private corporations) are some of the factors posing a grave and growing threat to the conservation of indigenous foods and traditional medicinal plants.

Furthermore, there has been a gradual erosion of indigenous varieties, especially rice biodiversity. Most of the indigenous rice varieties are being replaced by high yielding varieties. These high yielding varieties have not resulted in any spectacular increase in yield in this region. The majority of farmers, especially the resource-poor tribal farmers are not able to afford high quality expensive fertilizers which are normally recommended along with these varieties.

Tribal Healers – Traditional knowledge erosion and threat to livelihood

In addition to the above, there has been a gradual loss of practical knowledge about traditional medicine and healing practices in the tribal regions, during the past couple of decades. This has resulted in poor health status of the most vulnerable sections of the tribal population. Many factors contribute to this knowledge erosion. The most pressing issues pertaining to this knowledge erosion are: a) lack of incentives and recognition. For instance, scientists and researchers collect data and publish their studies but often fail to give the due recognition to the healers. Also, the ayurvedic and allopathic drug companies extract knowledge for research and development purposes, but do not usually share profits with the tribal healers; b) lack of proper documentation of knowledge regarding traditional healing practices; and c) broken intergenerational links (impacting dissemination of age-old knowledge and traditions from older generation to the younger generation), among others.

Tribal healers are known to use their own systems of healthcare with plant and animal extracts. However, in the recent past, factors such as aversion to follow the low income traditional healing practices; gradual shift to more lucrative alternate livelihoods; greater reliance on non-traditional healing practices and high degree of inroads by modern medicine, is threatening the traditional medicinal traditions to proliferate further. The native tribal healers are precious, but, still remain a neglected lot.

Traditional medicine is critical as well as cost-effective (in relation to hospital care) and ensures self dependency on healthcare due to enhanced reliance on the local biodiversity. It must be given the much needed boost.

Further, majority of the traditional healers lack legal authority to heal. Herbal healers need to be identified and honoured. These unsung heroes need to be brought into the fold of the formal healthcare system of India so that unhindered services are made available to the needy in the villages. Further, weeding out unqualified healers is equally important. These healers provide their services to the most interior and under-served tribal regions. Thus, appropriate regulations and government policy actions and support would help streamline traditional healing practices.

With the state administered healthcare systems based on modern medicine unable to tackle the mammoth health challenges in the country coupled with the acute shortage of resources and well trained health personnel to effectively serve each and every one, it is imperative to get traditional healing practices back on wheels. Traditional knowledge sharing, conservation of the rich biodiversity and enhanced focus on tribal healing practices via greater recognition to the traditional healers and thus securing their livelihood is the need of the hour. Furthermore, providing much needed impetus to the time tested traditional medical practices is pertinent for ensuring better healthcare of all sections of the society, especially the most vulnerable section in the tribal belts of the country.

Dental Insurance: Is Dental Insurance In Your Best Interest? What You Need To Know

Did you know? In the 1960s dental insurance companies paid a yearly maximum of $ 1,000 and that number has not traveled over the past four decades? The average dental insurance pays a maximum of $ 1,200 per year.

Dental costs are on the rise and if you are like most you want to know you should purchase dental insurance. Many dental offices now offer great specials to first time patients for a full exam, x-rays, and most include a cleaning. Before deciding to purchase insurance opt for one of these appointments and talk with the dentist about how much treatment you will need. The dental office can help you decide which option would be best for you.

You should investigate the differences between using the proposed insurance through your employer or buying one independently. Weigh the monthly costs of dental insurance versus paying out of pocket for your dental treatment and see what works for you and your family.

A difficult fact for many patients but something very important to remember is that dental insurance is not similar to medical insurance. Many patients are shocked to realize that even though they are covered at 90% that they still have a big balance. The majority of dental insurance plans are designed with the purpose of only covering the basic dental care, about $ 1,000 to $ 1,500 per year, and is not intended to provide comprehensive coverage like that of medical insurance.

You might have heard the financial person at your dentist say, "you're maxed out." That is a term referring to your yearly maximum that the dental insurance plan will pay for the year. Any service you receive is taken from your yearly maximum. So even if your cleanings and other preventative services are covered at 100% they are done so because it is taken from permitted maximum allowance from the insurance company.

For example, if you have a yearly maximum of $ 1,200 and you saw your dentist in January and again in July for your biannual cleaning and check-ups at $ 300 per visit you would have a remaining available maximum of $ 600 for anything that may come up such as a filling or dental emergency. The annual maximum will renew automatically each year and any unused benefits will not be rolled over into the next year. Each member of your family has their own yearly maximum so you will not be sharing benefits.

In / Out of Network Dentists

There are HMOs which require you to go to a specific dentist and then there are PPOs which were designed to allow the patient to pick their dentist. However, more independent insurance companies are popping up calling themselves "PPO" but now have distinguished between in-network and out-of-network. It is the patient's responsibility to verify if their dentist is in or out of network. However, the differences are very minimal. If you have a dentist you like, trust, and are comfortable with stick it out.

Other Caveats

  • Co-pay? A lot of insurances have them but not the majority of PPOs. And if the insurance requires one and the dentist does not make you pay for it then that is a red flag. That flag is called insurance fraud. While it may make things better for you right then it could certainly cause trouble in the long run.
  • Is there a "missing tooth clause" for people with missing teeth that they may want replaced later with a bridge, partial, or implant.
  • Differences in coverage for preventative, basic, and major work should be similar to other major insurance plans. Make sure that for preventive services that x-rays are covered, that root canals are covered under basic, and that they do not have a missing tooth clause under major work. If you know you will need major work but your plan does not cover it then you might want to look into switching or finding other ways to pay for your treatment.
  • Typical coverage: Preventative = 100%, Basic = 80%, Major = 50%
  • Most dental offices these days do not use amalgam (or silver) fillings, but the insurances will not cover the full cost of a white filling, it would be a good thing to ask about.
  • Waiting periods – are there long periods of time required to pass before the insurance company will allow treatment to be redone on a tooth. For instance, if you had a filling 3 years ago that needs to be redone and your insurance has a 5 year waiting period, then they are not going to cover any of it.
  • All dental insurance companies are not alike so you must figure out which procedures fall under each category.

Dental insurances companies are raking in a lot of dough between your monthly premiums and your co-pays. Make sure that you are making the best decision for you and your family.

Yearly maximums are not going to be going up anytime soon and dentists know that. To help finance your dental care, many dental offices are now offering interest-free payment plans.
