Do not believe all that you read and hear

Often when a person sufferers from social anxiety, they will seek advice and help from friends, family and many will defer to the internet for advice on how to social social anxiety.

The problem with this method is that many of the people you will be seeking advice from have never experienced social phobia themselves and can not relate to what you are going through. The internet is a great place to find information on gaining control over your social fears but there is a lot of bad information out there so you will need to sift through and find what works and what does not.

Many articles and websites will give you the same rehashed information on how you can social fear, but most are written by people who have never suffered that overwhelming fear of social situations that you are experiencing.

How I Am Overcoming My Social Anxiety

I have been dealing with the effects of social anxiety for most of my life, for me I noticed the symptoms starting to develop around the time I entered high school which was about just over 15 years ago.

15 years to some may not seem like a long time, but to me that is way to long and I knew that I did not want to spend the rest of my life with the anchor of social fear so I began to research as much as I could on how to social social anxiety .

Dangers of an Ovarian Cyst Rupture

An ovarian cyst rupture can be a potential threat to your life! Most ovarian cysts are benign in nature. However, there are times when an ovarian cyst can be really painful. But nothing is more painful than the feeling of a ruptured cyst. The symptoms of an ruptured cyst are often similar to symptoms of a regular cyst on the ovary.

If a cyst on the ovary isn’t detected earlier, the chances are that it can rupture. A ruptured cyst could also potentially be a serious medical complication like the infection and haemorrhage.

Below is a list of just some of the complications of an ovarian cyst rupture.

Twisted ovaries. Cysts larger than 4cm are likely to cause twisting, this is more likely to occur if the cyst is accompanied by a tumour. The problem with an ovarian twisting is that it can stop blood supply to the ovary which in turn can cause death to the ovarian tissue. Death to the ovarian tissue can impact your chances of conceiving and having a baby. Twisted ovaries can also injure the urinary tract as well as causing clotting in the ovarian blood vessels. A twisted ovary is an emergency situation, it’s important that you get immediate medical attention.

Blood leakage. A ruptured cyst can also cause leakage into the abdominal cavity. The source of blood in abdominal hemorrhages is from an organ in the abdomen. This is potentially more serious, as the volume of leaked blood is greater. The source of bleeding needs to be located and stopped.

The Cooking Oil Crisis

Be it crude oil or cooking oil, lesser the better. While reduced consumption of crude oil results in a healthier environment, reduced consumption of cooking oil results in a healthier individual. As care starts from home, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss the cooking oil concerns and leave the crude oil to the leaders for now. I am no doctor or dietitian or nutritionist, who typically gives advice which in most cases is easier, said than followed. I hold an even more important position of head cook of my family and a huge part of my family's health is my responsibility.

As much as one may say fat is not good, but some fats are essential for the body. It is also said that in order to metabolize (burn) fat, you need fat. The 'good' fats are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats while 'bad' fats are saturated fats and trans fats. While one should always take fats in moderation, the latter are best avoided. What this means to your shopping basket is that oils like Olive oil, Canola (also marketed as rapeseed oil in UK), peanut oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, corn oil and flax seed oil are considered more healthy option than other oils mainly because of their high polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat content.

Olive oil however is quite expensive and for this reason. Canola is sometimes thought of as poor man's olive oil. One should bear in mind that oil properties change with temperature and ones good at room temperature produce harmful toxins when heated. Olive oil for this reason is not considered very good for high temperature cooking. I use Canola for normal cooking and did attempt deep frying once but the food smelt more like fish. I then realized Canola is not widely considered suitable for deep frying either. My choice is Canola for normal cooking and groundnut oil for deep frying. If allergic to nuts, sunflower oil is a good option as well. Coconut oil is generally considered unhealthy due to its high content of saturated fats but this is a matter of debt. Having understood which oil is better, here are some everyday tips I follow to reduce oil intake.

1. Rather than pouring out a bottle, use a spoon so you know how much you are adding. When I started doing this, I found that I started getting uncomfortable every time I exceeded two teaspoons while before measuring I would have happily added that quantity.

2. Understand why oil is needed. Is it just for tempering or for stir fry or deep fry? The quantity of oil and temperature of cooking varies depending on why you need the oil. Some say stir fry should be done close to the smoke point of oil but we know that heating oil so much is not very good for health. Some dishes like the Indian pickles are quite dependent on oil and just need an awful lot of it but there are other dishes in which oil is used to 'enhance' the taste and texture and can very well be compromised.

3. Do not expect how much oil will be needed to cook a dish, rather add oil in stages. I have seen that sometimes Spanish eggplants cook easily in very little oil while some other times I need to dump loads of oil to make itible. Go with the flow.

4. Try to allow the food to cook in its own moisture. Add a wee bit of salt so the vegetables give up their water and get cooked in the same. Alternately, sprinkle water frequently rather than adding oil. For some dishes, I sprinkle tamarind water so it enhances the flavor of the dish and reduces oil as well.

5. I am not a saint and I do not say I can always resist chips and other deep fried dishes. One should keep the consumption of such dishes occasional and minimal. Also, on such days you indulge, try to reduce fat intake in other meals so the balance in the diet can be maintained.

Understanding a Financial Report

Publicly traded companies companies produce three commonly used financial reports:

1. Balance Sheet

2. Income Statement

3. Statement of Cash Flow

Generally all three are part of the quarterly and annual financial statements. Let’s discuss the Balance Sheet.

The Balance Sheet contains what is owned (assets), what is owed (liabilities), and what, it anything is left over (equity). Remember, the balance sheet only shows what the company’s financial position is at one given moment.

Assets are items that have a maturity of no more than 1 year. Your checking account is an example of assets. There are typically 5 categories of current assets:

1. Cash and cash equivalents

2. Short term investments

3. Accounts receivable

4. Inventories

5. Other current assets (i.e. work in progress)

Long term assets include fixed assets i.e. real property, intangibles, assets (i.e. a patent) some investments (i.e. a partnership). They are items that are meant to last more than a year.

Current Liabilities are debts payable within 1 year, such as electric bills, or sales taxes. We can group current liabilities into 5 categories, also:

1. Accounts payable (monthly bills, invoices, etc.)

2. Short term borrowings (such as to meet payroll)

3. Income taxes payable

4. Deferred income taxes (an accounting procedure)

5. Other current liabilities

Long term liabilities are debts due in over 1 years time such as bank loans

Equities. To put it simply Equity is the total assets minus the total liabilities. It is the part of the company the shareholders own. There are 3 parts to equity:

1. Common stock – a minimal share value

2. Paid-in capital – an accounting share value

3. Retained earnings- the equity over the years in the form of profits or losses.

Analyzing financial statements is not an easy chore. Entire careers are made of doing so. It is a process to determine the soundness and stability of a company. All parts of the statement are important and all parts need to be studied to make a sound investment decision.

Surgery Options For Sleep Apnea

The short break in the signal results in the breath coming to a halt and then restarting as soon as the signals resume which could take anything from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. Then there was another type called the "Obstructive Sleep Apnea" (OSA). It sees the breathing stops because of a temporary obstruction that occurs in the wind pipe. The breathing restarts as soon as the obstruction is clear due to a combination of the person turning over or waking up, etc. "Is this as serious as it sounds?" I asked Allan. He just shrugged.

Poor Allan, he looked a bit rattled. And then the brochure mentioned a third type of sleep apnea which was basically a mixture of Central Sleep Apnea and Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Darn, I thought, that sounded like a death trap.

The brochure mentioned that the only true remedy was surgery. The details were sketchy and it recommended we speak to our doctor. But how do you know you have any of this, I asked Allan. He showed me a something called the polysomnography test result and said his family doctor recommended surgery. We got into my truck and headed for the surgeon's clinic.

Pre-surgery examination
After a short wait, we were admitted into a well equipped consultation room. Allan brave the surgeon the polysomnography test results and I guess also a note from his family doctor. The surgeon spent the next half hour doing a detailed examination of Allan's nose and throat. He explained that the procedure was called "fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy".

Once the examination was completed, the surgeon said that he would like to perform something he called the "staged surgical protocol". He explained that he will do certain small procedures to alleviate the effects of sleep apnea.
