Another chemical that was commonly used in ear cleaning/wash solutions is chlorhexidine. This chemical is no longer available in ear wash solutions, because of the number of dogs that suffered temporary and permanent hearing loss!

Glaucoma consist of several types of disorders of the eye, pigmentary glaucoma being one type which, fortunately, is rather rare. The primary symptom of glaucoma in the eye is the buildup of internal eye pressure, or intraocular pressure (IOP). This buildup, if untreated, can ever damage the optic nerve and in a worst case scenario, result in blindness.

The interior of the eye is filled with a fluid, aqueous humor. The eye is constructed to allow occasional draining or discharge of some of this fluid to prevent the internal pressure of the eye from becoming too great. When glaucoma is present, the drainage mechanism has been interrupted, leading to increasing pressure. This usually occurs without causing pain or other noticeable symptoms, and often is not detected until significant damage to the eye has already been done.

Pigmentary glaucoma occurs as the result of a condition known as the pigment dispersion syndrome. Pigment granules are normally attached to the back of the iris. These granules can sometimes flake off into the aqueous humor, and eventually find their way to the interior eye drainage canals where, over a period of time, the granules will begin to block the canals. Once that happens, the pressure on the interior of the eye will begin to increase. At the point where this pressure begins to cause damage to the optic nerve, the pigment dispersion syndrome has developed into pigmentary glaucoma.

Other types of glaucoma generally strike in later years, although myopic individuals are still slightly more at risk, and tend to get the disease earlier in life. The previous sentence provides a clue on what is wrong when you get myopia, namely the eye muscles don’t relax.

A healthy eye should relax itself, but a myopic eye doesn’t. But think about what happens with conventional myopia treatments. Let’s look at them individually. Firstly we examine corrective lenses, ie glasses and contacts, and secondly eye surgery.

There are no side effects involved, unlike drugs which can cause sleepiness. It's so inexpensive and it can be done on your own at home. Additionally, the ingredients needed to create the saline solution can be found in an average kitchen: clean water and table salt.

Executing this procedure can be done in different ways. There's an approach wherein no special device is needed except for your cupped hand. Although there are some approaches which necessitate the use of special devices. One of these is the bulb syringe that enables you to regulate the flow of the solution that enters the nostril and gush through the passes of the sinuses.

Then there's also the neti pot, which looks just like a little tea pot. A spout is attached to it; This is placed in one of the nostrils to enable the solution to get inside the nasal cavity. The position of the head is adjusted to facilitate the flow of the solution naturally with the help of gravity.

It's possible to purchase a saline solution that's already made. But mixing your own is not that difficult. The ingredients you need are inexpensive. Simply add half a teaspoon of table salt and a pinch of baking soda to a cup of lukewarm water. But do not use tap water for the irritation of your sinuses as it may have impurities that can only aggravate the problem. In addition, the salt that you have to use should not be the iodized kind.

Using this formula in creating the solution is important as it aims to give the same concentration as that of your tears. In performing the procedure, your head should be placed above the sink to prevent drippings from getting to the floor. Fill your cupped hand with the lukewarm solution. Cover one nose and snort the solution with the other one. Blow your nose gently to remove the solution and mucus. Repeat the procedure with your other nostril.

If using a bulb syringe or neti pot, simply place the tip of the instrument in one of your nostrils. Press the bulb or tilt the head and the pot to enable the saline solution to flow into the nasal cavity. Do not cover the other nostril as that's where the solution will exit. Adjust the angle of your head in order to make sure the solution gets to your nasal and sinus passes. Gently blow your nose afterwards, then repeat the procedure with the other nostril.

However, doing the procedure a number of times a day is not recommended. That's because the protective mucus lining of the nasal passes can be washed out as well. Additionally, talk with your doctor if you wish to try this to attain relief from sinusitis, colds, nasal congestion, allergic rhinitis and others. If performed in the right manner, sinus irrigation can be very safe and effective.

Negative Pressure Therapy

By holding the wound in a subatomic pressure chamber, the negative pressure keeps the wound moist, stimulates the cells surrounding the wound, decrees the risk of infection by controlling bacteria, increases tissue growth, and reduces swelling that can cause permanent nerve damage. The result is less risk of complication and a faster healing time.

These are, of course, just a few of the techniques and technologies used by wound care hospitals. Other services such as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Growth Factor Therapy, physiotherapy and many other treatments may follow. The type of treatments you need, and how the health care professionals approach your wound, will depend on your particular situation.

The sole purpose of wound care hospitals is to heal the wound as quickly and as completely as possible while minimizing the risk to the patient. However, this involves the entire wound. For those suffering with injuries such as excessive burns, amputations, and healing complications, the health professionals employed in these facilities can often mean the difference between life and death.

Incredible Bible Characters And Their Stories! – Gehazi

Great and lasting consequences!

Remember Pinocchio … the children's story of the little wooden puppet who nose great when he lied? Well I am reminded of Pinocchio whenever I think of Gehazi – one of the incredible bible characters and the consequences he suffered for lying. Gehazi was the servant of Elisha, a prophet in Israel, who was himself the successor to the great prophet, Elijah. Naaman was an important man in Syria. He was the captain of the host of the King but he suffered a great sickness; he was a leper. He had heard of the prophet Elisha from his wife's little maidservant [a girl of the captivity who had informed her mistress of the power that attended the prophet] and had traveled with the king's blessing and a letter of introduction to the King of Israel seek his recovery from his leprosy. He had come in grand style with horses and chariot and standing at Elisha's door seeking an audience. But Elisha did not receive Naaman personally and instead dispatched Gehazi, his servant to give some simple instructions to Naaman regarding his condition. Now Naaman was a mighty man in valor, highly valued by his master and honorable. He felt that owed to his stature he was due a much grander reception that he received; that at least he would have seen a performance of some ritual on the prophet's part. Disappointed, Naaman being wroth at the impersonal treatment he received from Elisha, the prophet, went away from him enraged thinking he had been slighted. But his own servants impressed upon him the folly of his response and he turned again and submitted to Elisha's instructions.

After he was healed he returned again to the prophet professing there is no God in all the earth but in Israel and urging him to accept compensation at his hand. But Elisha refused to accept anything from him.

Can not you just hear the wheels turning in Gehazi's head?

Observing this exchange Gehazi thought he would take advantage of the situation and followed after the Syrian to take of him that which he had offered Elisha thereby entertaining his deception. What followed were four lies. Three made to Naaman and finally one told to his master, Elisha.

Lie # 1: "My master hath sent me …

Lie # 2: there came to me from mount Ephraim two young prophets …

Lie # 3: give them a talent of silver and two changes of garments "…

Naaman not only granted his request butave him two talents of silver and two changes of garments and also an escort of two servants that bore the gifts before Gehazi. When the servants departed and he had hidden the "loot" in the house, Elisha asked him "… from where are you coming ?"

Lie # 4: "Thy servant went nowhere." to which Elisha replied, " Is it a time to receive money and garments, etc …?" then he cursed Gehazi with the leprosy of Naaman.

What's the lesson here?

We know that in Pinocchio's story he became a real boy but Gehazi and his seed after him had to live with the leprosy that clung to his body. [2Kings 5: 22-27]

It is unfortunate when we fall victim in areas that we should overcome. The stories of these bible characters are complete with examples for our learning and lest we heed we too will suffer needless consequences.

Diagnosing Spells: Fits, Faints, and More

Spells. Things that go bump in the night. Such events are medical mysteries in need of solving. As a consulting neurologist, I've learned that part of my job is to be a "phenomenologist." To explain, if possible, the unexplained. To puzzle out mystery-symptoms and odd phenomena.

And one of the hardest (but most intellectually stimulating) diagnoses to make is that of "spells." That's what I call episodes that come and go, that have a beginning and an end – and something unusual in between. The basic process of diagnosing spells should be familiar to anyone who has taken a squeaking car to a mechanic. The one time that the car does not squeak is when the mechanic is inspecting it. So the mechanic has to make an analysis based on what you describe.

The same thing occurs in diagnosing people with spells. When an attack occurs in front of a doctor, it's usually easy to diagnose. But that almost never happens. Usually, all we have to go on is the description, or, hopefully, two descriptions – one from the person who had the spell and a second from someone else who was there to witness it.

Methodically, each of the two accounts is broken down into three parts – the events leading up to the attack, the attack itself, and what happened afterwards. Each account, taken one at a time, is based on what that person actually saw, heard and could remember, reported in a way particular to that person's abilities to observe and articulate. To make matters more challenging, the patient who had the attack often has significant gaps in their memory.

The list of potential underlining causes – what I think of as the differential diagnosis of things that come and go – spans multiple medical disciplines and is almost as broad as medicine itself. For example, let's assemble just a short list of conditions that can occur as episodic symptoms: seizures, pseudoseizures (seizure-like attacks of psychological origin), faulting spells, hypoglycemia, panic attacks, irregular heartbeats, dissociations, transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) , migraine and vertigo.

What a list! It includes items from the fields of neurology, cardiology, psychiatry, endocrinology and otorhinolaryngology. And a physician is likely to run into each of these conditions at one time or another. Unfortunately for the purposes of diagnosis, patients do not arrive at doctors wearing signs around their necks saying, "I have a psychiatric condition," or, "My symptoms are due to my heart." All they know is that they have a problem they need help with.

Much of medical diagnosis is "pattern fitting" in which the patient's story is matched up against typical stories told by patients with different, identified conditions, and the best fit wins. Or, said another way: if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it must be a duck.

But what if it looks like a duck, walks like a goose and gobbles like a turkey? What is it then? Well, that's what we call an outlier or atypical case, and we just do the best we can.

Medical tests are available for some of these conditions, such as electroencephalogram (EEG) for seizure cases, a 5-hour glucose tolerance test for hypoglycemia, and prolonged cardiac monitoring for irregular heartbeats. But each of these tests has its own strengths, weaknesses, and blind-spots that need to be figured into the diagnosis. (For example, an EEG might be normal in a patient who really does have seizures.) Then, for some of the conditions – like panic attacks, migraines and pseudoseizures – corroborating tests do not even exist.

Sometimes the available data permit a confident diagnosis and a specific treatment. In other cases the data allow one to narrow the possibilities to a short list, but not a single, final, definitive diagnosis. What then?

Sometimes watchful waiting is what's called for, also known as tincture of time. Once every obtainable clue has been assembled and they're still not enough to permit a firm diagnosis, then sometimes the best clue just has not happened yet and needs to be waited for.

Depending on which items are still on the diagnostic short-list, treatment might still be possible. For example, in a case in which it can not be determined if a patient has seizures, pseudoseizures, or both, it may be reasonable to try a decent dose of a good seizure-preventing drug, and watch to see if anything changes for the better.

Reading about inexactness in medical diagnosis might make some people uneasy. Perhaps it would be more comforting to believe that "a series of tests" could prove any diagnosis. For many conditions I'm sure that's exactly what happens, but it does not seem to be true for things that go bump in the night.

Can Measles Vaccine Cause Autism?

This has been a wrenching issue for many families who are convinced that measles (MMR vaccine) or other vaccinations have caused their children to develop autism. Many of them have bought redress in the court system or in the National Vaccine Injury Compensation System (VICP), which was established to compensate individuals who have been harmed by vaccinations without formal litigation. As rare as these autism-vaccine associations are, they have been reportedly reported in the press and generate understandable sympathetic from the public.

At this point, there is no scientific evidence that any vaccine causes autism. Indeed, the VICP, which requires a lower standard of proof than in a traditional courtroom, recently ruled in 3 cases that the vaccines were innocent. While current medical knowledge is never the last word, for now we must rely upon science to govern our decisions.

Every physician and health care expert in this country and beyond recommends measles vaccinations in the strongest terms. Measles is highly contagious and can lead to deafness, seizures and permanent brain injury. It is a preventable disease.

It is particularly critical that international travelers are up-to-date on measles vaccines and other routine travel vaccinations as there have been several measles outbreaks this year all over the world. In addition, if a traveler contracts measles abroad, then he can transmit it to others at home when he returns. Consult with a travel doctor before departure to determine if you need a booster shot.

While every vaccine, including measures, has potential side-effects, these are rare events. Health experts strongly advise that the risks of harm from routine vaccinations are much less than the risks of not having immunization to various communicable diseases.

Autism is a mysterious and serious illness. We all hope that medical research will lead to understanding the cause of this disease. So far, the verdict on the measles vaccine in the case of MMR vs Autism is not guilty.

Get Your Tetanus Shot

When it comes to needles, most of us cringe at the thought and choose to not subject ourselves voluntarily to any shot we do not have to have. There is one shot that nobody wants to get: a tetanus shot. That sore spot on our arm reminds us of the nurse wearing medical scrubs and uniforms that injected us with the painful liquid. While we might not like getting the shot, it is something that all of us needs.

Tetanus is a serious disease of the central nervous system. This is caused by a toxin that enters the body through an open wound and can sometimes be fatal. The tetanus bacteria live in soil and manure, but is not contagious. Those who contract tetanus have not received the tetanus vaccine. With the high number of vaccinations in the United States, only about 50 cases occur every year. If you have some sort of wound or tissue puncture you could be exposed to tetanus and the doctors wearing medical uniforms will probably give you a tetanus shot just to be safe. Symptoms of tetanus can take anywhere from two days to two months to appear. One of the most well known symptoms of tetanus is lockjaw. Stiffness of stomach and back muscles, fever, sweating, and fast pulse are some other common symptoms.

In the illegally event that you do come down with tetanus, your doctor will prescribe certain medications to help control any spasms you may be experiencing. One of the first things that they will do is to thoroughly clean the area through which tetanus entered your body. You will then go through a series of tetanus antitoxin injections to rid the tetanus from your body.

While you can recover from tetanus, the disease is very serious and it is possible that it could result in death. If you can avoid all the potentially deadly complications that tetanus entails, you need to take advantage of it. The only way to prevent this disease is to get a tetanus vaccine. Since most of us are vaccinated by a nurse wearing men's scrubs at a young age because schools require a complete vaccination record, we still need to keep up to date as adults. It is recommended that adults get a tetanus booster shot every ten years. With such an easy way to prevent a horrible disease, we should all gladly sign up to get that shot!
