1. What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a type of fat (lipid) in one’s blood. More so, one’s cell, as well as one’s body, makes all it needs. Cholesterol also can get from the food we eat.

ii. High-Density Lipo-Protein Cholesterol is the “good” cholesterol. It’s the type that is linked to a lower risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke.

2. High-Density Lipo-Protein Cholesterol and Low-Density Lipo-Protein Cholesterol.

The University of Western Ontario in London, Researchers found that flavonoids and limonoids present in orange juice increases the body’s HDL cholesterol (so-called ‘good’ cholesterol) level, which helps wash out the Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (‘the bad’ cholesterol) from the system. Other citrus juices, such as grapefruit, also contain this bio-chemical. Orange juice is also a good source of Vitamin C.

Researchers also suggest that drinking three glasses of orange juice a day increases the ‘good’ High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and lowers the chance of getting heart disease.

In this study, patients with high cholesterol began by drinking one glass of orange juice daily for four weeks, eventually consuming three glasses daily for four weeks. The patients that did not drink any juice for five weeks and had their cholesterol tested again.

The results showed that while LDL cholesterol did not go down, the average HDL cholesterol level rose by 21 percent and the ratio of HDL to total cholesterol decreased by 16 percent. The combination of raising HDL cholesterol and lowering the ratio is known to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre say beans increase blood levels of phytoestrogens or plant estrogens in women. According to Dr Bairey Merz. “A very significant relationship between increased phytoestrogen levels and lower cholesterol, this is the results of this study.”

There also may be “positive associations” with phytoestrogens and hormone replacement therapy for women during and after menopause.

3. Changes in diet and lifestyle have been shown to significantly reduce the risk of heart disease.

The next challenge is whether the same benefits can be obtained by taking supplement capsules instead of eating beans themselves. Other studies show that artificial forms produce less positive results. This probably means people should be eating beans as opposed taking supplements in capsule form.

Digging deeper the researchers found that the fish-loving people also had high levels of a class of fatty acid called Omega-3 fatty acids also known as Docosa Hexaenoic Acid (DHA), which comes from fish.

Cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, and herring are reportedly the richest sources of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, but most other fish and seafood contain some as well. Dutch researchers found that those who eat fish regularly have a lower rate of heart disease and stroke than those who do not.

4. Garlic, Ginger prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and heart attack.

Many studies indicate that garlic prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, may prevent the liver from producing excess fat and cholesterol.

In a study of 87,000 nurses conducted by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard University, compared with those who ate one serving a month or less, subjects who ate five or more servings of carrots every week had a 68-percent lower risk of suffering stroke. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene and other carotenoids, all members of the vitamin A family. Eating a lot of fruits and veggies that are rich in beta-carotene and vitamin C and E, can reduce the risk of having the stroke by as much as 54 percent if they enjoy carrots often.

Cayenne pepper improves circulation and heart function without raising blood pressure according to recent studies. It also enhances the power of other herbs taken at the same time.

The bromelain the enzyme that present in Pineapple is best known for its ability to break down proteins. It is a key ingredient in meat tenderizers. The bromelain action of anti-clotting might help prevent ischemic stroke and heart attack.

A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that fruits and vegetables are beneficial in combating stroke. It was conducted at Harvard’s School of Public Health where investigators studied the relationship between fruit intake and the rate of stroke in over 75,000 women.

There is a decrease in stroke risk in those who had an increase in intake in the number of servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

More so, the same Journal of the America Medical Association revealed that eating whole grain bread can drop stroke risk by 43 percent. Dr Simin Liu of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. The USA conducted a study that followed the health and stroke frequency of nurses over a multi-year period. The dietary concern has been paid attention to and intake of whole grain bread. Liu said, “replacing refined grains with whole grains by even one serving a day may have significant benefits in reducing the risk of ischemic stroke’. The study concludes, “With a lower risk of ischemic stroke among women higher intake of whole grain foods was associated with this.”

Conclusion.

Nearly all legumes contain genistein, a cancer-preventive nutrient. I addition to guarding against cancer, genistein is also reported to have a significant anti-clotting effect. So, it is believed that it may also help prevent ischemic stroke and heart attack. Genistein according to reports can also be obtained from tofu and soy products. English peas or other beans and legumes.

Green tea has been shown to help keep blood pressure under control. It also may help keep cholesterol from clogging arteries. The herb tea reportedly contains Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) and other substances that help in the body protection against the dangers of oxidation, while helping to keep the harmful LDL cholesterol down and the helpful HDL cholesterol up. According to reports, they also assist in keeping blood pressure under control.

Low Carb Dieting the Truth: Part One

Almost everyone knows someone who has used a low carb diet. They have used it themselves had a friend use it or are getting ready to use it . Are these diets magic? Are they safe? Can I really eat all of the cheese and meat I want ? Will I die if I go into ketosis?

These are just a few common questions I hear in regards to questions that concern low carb diets. In this series of articles I will present readers with scientific facts and my practical observations for implications concerning low carb diets. Some low carb supporters will not like what I will have to say. Some low carb haters will not like what I have to say. The objective of these articles are to educate readers on the practical implications of low carb dieting. Some will be offended and some will say how can that be. Either way sit back and enjoy as I attempt to shed light on the highly talked about topic – low carb diets (ketogenic diets)

Before we move any further let me introduce the word ketogenic. Must of you reading this article are probably familiar with the world as it implies low carb or restriction of carb intake. Simply put for our purposes the words ketogenic and low carb are synonymous. A couple of other comments I would like to make before we move on. This comment is for Low Carb supporters that swear of all vegetables and fruits. Get on medline.com and do some research. Go to the library and look through some journals. A complete diet for long term use needs to incorporate greens and some fruits to be healthy. A short term diet devoid of fruits and vegetables might not be that bad, but rejecting greens and any fruits for life is a bad idea.

This comment is for the low carb haters. One of the number one reasons most of America is fat is because of chronically high insulin levels. Which is primarily contributed to excessive carb intake. Don’t get me wrong I am not blaming high carbohydrate intake on all of our obesity problems. I should probably say excessive and the wrong types of carbohydrate at the wrong times are the problem. At the same time the answer is not to eat all of the saturated fat we can find : which can contribute to insulin insensitivity, elevated TG’s, increased lipogenesis and digestive problems.

What is a ketogenic diet? A diet that causes ketone bodies to be produced by the liver, and shifts the body’s metabolism away from glucose in favor of fat burning. A ketogenic diet restricts carbohydrates below a certain level (generally 100 per day). The ultimate determinant of whether a diet is ketogenic or not is the presence or absence of carbohydrate. Protein and fat intake vary. Contrary to poplar belief eating fat is not what causes ketosis. In the past starvation diets were used often to induce ketosis. I will repeat myself again and say lack of carbohydrate or presence of ultimately determines if the diet is ketogenic.

In most eating plans the body runs on a mixture of protein, fats and carbohydrates. When carbohydrates are severely restricted and glycogen storage (glucose in muscle and liver) is depleted the body begins to utilize other means to provide energy. FFA (free fatty acids) can be used to provide energy, but the brain and nervous system are unable to use FFA’s. Although the brain can use ketone bodies for energy.

Ketone bodies are by products of incomplete FFA breakdown in the liver. Once they begin to accumulate fast and reach a certain level they are released , accumulated in the bloodstream and cause a state called ketosis. As this occurs there is a decrease in glucose production and utilization. There is also less reliance on protein to meet energy requirements by the body. Ketogenic diets are often referred to as protein sparing as they help to spare LBM whiled dropping body fat.

In regards to ketogenic diets there are two primary hormones- insulin, glucagon that need to be considered. Insulin can be described as a storage hormone as it’s job is to take nutrients out of the bloodstream and carry them to target tissues. Insulin carries glucose from the blood to the liver and muscles, and it carries FFA from the blood into adipose tissue (stored fat triglyceride). On the other hand glucagon breaks down glycogen stores (especially in the liver) and releases them into the blood.

When carbs are restricted or removed insulin levels drop while glucagon levels rise. This causes enhanced FFA release from fat cells, and increased FFA burning in the liver. This accelerated burning of FFA in the liver is what leads to ketosis. There are a number of other hormones involved with this process as well.

In general we refer to three different types of ketogenic diets.

1) STANDARD KETOGENIC DIET- A diet containing l00 or less grams of carbohydrates is referred to as STANDARD KETOGENIC DIET

2)TARGETED KETOGENIC DIET- consuming carbohydrates around exercise, to sustain performance without affecting ketosis.

3)CYCLICAL KETOGENIC DIET- alternates periods of ketogenic dieting with periods of high carbohydrate intake

The Beginning of Ketogenic diets

Originally ketogenic diets were used to treat obesity and epilepsy. In general ketogenic diets are similar to starvation diets in the responses that occur in the body. More specifically these two states can be referred to as starvation ketosis and dietary ketosis. These similarities have led to the development of modern day ketogenic diets.

Ketogenic dieting has been used for years in the treatment of childhood epilepsy. In the early 1900’s times of total fasting was used to treat seizures. This caused numerous health problems and could not be sustained indefinitely.

Due to the impracticalities and health problems occurring with starvation ketogenic diets researchers began to look for a way to mimic starvation ketosis while consuming food. They determined that a diet consisting of high fat, low carb and minimal protein could sustain growth and maintain ketosis for a long period of time. This led to the birth of the original ketogenic diet in 1921 by Dr. Wilder. Dr Wilder’s diet controlled pediatric epilepsy in many cases where drugs and other treatments failed.

New epilepsy drugs were invented during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s and ketogenic diets fell to the wayside. These new drugs lead to almost disappearance of ketogenic diets during this time. A few modified ketogenic diets were tried during this time such as the MCT (medium chain triglycerides) diets, but they were not welly accepted.

In 1994 the ketogenic diet as a treatment for epilepsy was re-discovered. This came about in the story of Charlie a 2yr old with seizures that could not be controlled with mediacions or other treatment including brain surgery. Charlie’s father had found reference to the diet through his research and ended up at John Hopkins medical center.

Charlie’s seizures were completely controlled as long as he was on the diet. The huge success of the diet prompted Charlie’s father to start the Charlie foundation. The foundation has produced several videos, and published the book The Epilepsy Diet Treatment: An Introduction to the Ketogenic diet. The foundation has sponsored conferences to train physicians and dietians to implement the diet. The exact mechanisms of how the ketogenic diet works to control epilepsy are still unknown, the diet continues to gain acceptance as an alternative to drug therapy.

Obesity

Ketogenic diets have been used for at least a century for weight loss. Complete starvation was studied often including the research of Hill, who fasted a subject for 60 days to examine the effects. The effects of starvation were very successful in regards to treatment of the morbidly obese as rapid weight loss occurred. Other characteristics attributed to ketosis, such as appetite suppression and sense of well being, made fasting even more attractive for weight loss. Extremely obese patients have been fasted for up to one year and given nothing but vitamins and minerals.

The major problem with complete starvation diets is the loss of body protein, primarily from muscle tissue. Protein losses decrease as starvation contines, but up to one half of the total weight loss can be contributed to muscle and water loss.

In the early 1970’s Protein Sparing Modified Fasts were introduced. These diets

allowed the benefits of ketosis to continue while preventing losses of bodily proteins.

They are still used today under medical supervision

In the early 70’s Dr. Atkins introduced Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution With millions of

copies Sold the diet generated a great deal of interest. Dr. Atkins suggested a diet limited

in carbohydrate but unlimited in protein and fat. He promoted the diet as it would allow

rapid weight loss, no hunger and unlimited amounts of protein and fat. He offered just

enough research to allow the diet recognition. Although most of the evidence

supporting the diet was questionable.

During the 1980’s Michael Zumpano and Dan Duchaine introduced two of the earliest

CKD’s THE REBOUND DIET for muscle gain and then the modified version called

THE ULTIMATE DIET for fat loss. Neither diet became very popular. This was likely

due to the difficulty of the diet and the taboo of eating high fat.

In the early 90’s Dr. Dipasquale introduced the ANABOLIC DIET . This diet promoted 5

days of high- fat-high protein-low carb consumption whle eating high carbs and virtually

anything you wanted for two days. The diet was proposed to induce a metabolic shift

within the five days of eating low carbs (30 or less). The metabolic shift occurred as your

body switched from being a sugar buring machine to a fat-burning machine.

A few years later Dan Duchaine released the book UNDERGROUND BODYOPUS: MILITIANT WEIGHT LOSS AND RECOMPOSITION . The book included his CKD diet which he called BODYOPUS. The diet was more specified than the Anabolic Diet and gave exercise recommendations as well as the basics concerning exercise physiology. Most bodybuilders found the diet very hard to follow. The carb load phase required eating every 2 hrs and certain foods were prescribed. I personally loved the book, but felt the difficulty of the diet made it less popular. In this author’s opinion Ducahine’s book is a must read for anyone interested in Nutrition.

Ketogenic Diets have been used for years to treat specific conditions such as obesity and childhodd epilepsy. The effects of these diets have proven beneficial in a number of these well documented cases, but for some reason when we mention any type of low carb diet (ketogenic diet) people begin to tell us about how their doctor or friend told them it would kill them or how that diet was shown to damage the liver or kidneys. Keep in mind epileptic children have been in ketosis for up to three years and shown no negative effects; quiet the opposite. The weight loss in morbidly obese patients has been tremendous and the health benefits numerous. Maybe before coming to the conclusion that all types of ketogenic diets are bad other factors need to be considered such as activity levels, type of ketogenic diet, length of ketogenic diet, past eating experience, purpose of ketogeninc diet, individual body type and response to various eating plans, current physical condition, and quality of food while following ketogenic diet. As you can see there are numerous factors that come into play when saying a diet is good or bad. I think people should take the time look at the research and speak with various authorities in regards to low carb diets before drawing conclusions from the they says.

Relevant research in regards to ketogenic dieting

Efficacy and safety of the ketogenic diet for intractable childhood epilepsy: Korea multicentric experience

Chul Kang H, Joo Kim Y, Wook Kim D, Dong Kim H,

Dept of pediatrics, Epilepsy center, Inje Univ Coll of Med, Sanggye Paik Hospital, Seoul Korea

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the safety of the ketogenic diet, and to evaluate the prognosis of the patients after successful discontinuation of the diet in infants, children and adolescents with refractory epilepsy. The study looked at patients who had been treated with KD during 1995 through 2003 at Korean multicenters. The outcomes of the 199 patients enrolled in the study at 6 and 12 months were as follows: 68% and 46% of patients remained on the diet, 58% and 41% showed a reduction in seizures, including 33% and 25% who became seizure free. The complications were mild during the study, but 5 patients died during the KD. No significant variables were related to the efficacy, but those with symptomatic and partial epilepsies showed more frequent relapse after completion of the diet. The researchers concluded the KD is a safe and effective alternative therapy for intractable epilepsy in Korea, although the customary diet contains substantially less fat than traditional Western diets, but life-threatening complications should be monitored closely during follow up.

Chronic Kidney Failure Stages – Stages 1 to 5 Explained

Chronic kidney failure stages are ranked from stage 1 to stage 5. If you have chronic kidney failure, your kidneys are slowly losing their ability to remove wastes and excess water from your blood. The condition is progressive meaning it gets worse over time. However, you can live with the condition for years before symptoms are seen.

The condition is also referred to as chronic kidney disease or chronic renal failure and affects approximately 2 out of 1,000 people in the United States. It is typically the result of other diseases and disorders that damage the kidneys. Diabetes and high blood pressure are two conditions that can lead to this chronic kidney disease.

There is no cure for the disease, however, if diagnosed in one of the early stages, medications and diet and lifestyle changes can help slow the progression of the disease.

Chronic Kidney Failure Stages

The National Kidney Foundation set 5 chronic kidney failure stages to determine the severity of the disease. The chronic kidney failure stages are based on the GFR level (glomerular filtration rate), which is a measurement of how quickly your kidneys are able to clean your blood. If your kidneys are healthy and functioning normally, your GFR level will be 90 mL/min or greater.

Stages

Normal = Healthy Kidneys with a GFR level of 90 mL/min or greater

Stage 1 = Kidney damage but normal or high GFR of 90 mL/min or greater

Stage 2 = Mildly decreased GFR of 60 to 89 mL/min

Stage 3 = Moderately decreased GFR of 30 to 59 mL/min

Stage 4 = Severely decreased GFR of 15 to 29 mL/min

Stage 5 = Kidney failure or dialysis. GFR of Less than 15 mL/min

In stages 1 and 2, there may be no noticeable symptoms. In these chronic kidney failure stages, the disease is usually diagnosed through lab tests that detect associated conditions such as high blood pressure, higher than normal levels of creatinine or urea in the blood, blood or protein in the urine, or evidence of kidney damage (i.e. MRI, CT scan, Ultrasound, contrast X-ray).

In stage 3, you may develop anemia and/or signs of an early bone disorder.

In stage 4, your kidneys are losing the ability to properly remove waste products and excess water from your body and you will need to prepare for dialysis treatments or a kidney transplant.

Stage 5 is also called end stage kidney disease, or end stage renal disease (ESRD). In this stage there is a complete or near complete loss of kidney function. Your body accumulates wastes, water, and toxic substances because the kidneys are unable to clear them from the body. In this stage you will likely need dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive.

Chronic Kidney Failure Stages and Prognosis

Chronic kidney disease is progressive and there is no known cure for the disease. Most cases will progress to later stages and require dialysis or a transplant.

If you undergo dialysis, you have an overall five year survival rate of 32 percent. If you receive a kidney transplant, you have a two year survival rate of approximately 90 percent depending on your donor.

How Frogs and Toads Differ

A lot of people wonder how frogs and toads different. Well, the surprising answer is that they do not really differ too much at all!

Frogs and toads are both amphibians, meaning they can live both in and out of water. They both vertebrates and belong to the class which includes salamanders. But while salamanders look more like lizards with long bodies and tails, both frogs and toads are short-bodied and tail-less, they have their Greek name "anura."

They also develop in the same way, from being mostly born as eggs, living under water as larvae or tadpoles, then living on both water and land as adults. They both have vocal cords as well and can even make sounds under water. Plus, both need to breed and lay their eggs in water.

But that's where the similarities end. The most obvious way frogs and toads different is with their skin. Frogs have smooth, wet, and velvety (or slimy) skin because they usually stay quite near the water. The toad is more adventurous and travels away from the water, resulting in dry, warty skin.

Frogs tend to lay their eggs in bodies of water without fish. These eggs form a rounded shape. Toad eggs taste nasty and may appear in occupied bodies of water. They usually take on a long chain-like shape.

Their body shapes are different as well. Frogs have leaner, elongated bodies with long and webbed hind feet, which lend themselves more to swimming and leaping. Toads have short and round bodies with shorter and more muscular hind legs which are better suited to short hops and walking.

These body differences are also what influence their self-protection system. The toad can not get away as quickly, which allowed them to develop paratoid (poison) glands that are located behind their eyes. This is why when animals bite them, they tend to foam at the mouth and some even die as a result of the poison.

Frogs, however, can jump much farther so their poison glands are not as developed. They do, however, excrete a mild poison through their skin. The Brazilian poison dart frog developed this to an extreme, however. Hunters will extract the tree frog's poison and use it to stun larger game. This poison is the reason why most people develop an itching or burning sensation if they rub their eyes after touching a frog or a toad.

Frogs have differently configured heads as well. They have what is known as "tympanum" or their ears at the sides of their head. It's covered with a thin piece of skin that protects it. These can hear other frog's calls from quite a long distance away and some frogs can even hear underwater. Toads have ears, too but not quite as large as the frog's.

Frog's eyes bulge out so they can see almost all around them and keep away from predators. The toad has recessed eyes since most predators do not often bother with them.

Do toads really cause warts? No they do not. Warts are caused by a virus, not a poor, innocent toad!

Reflexology – Non Invasive Healing Technique

Reflexology? Ever heard of it? Neither had I until I ran into a site put up by Bill Flocco, director and founder of the American Academy of Reflexology. It apparently is a site for pain relief and is responsible for giving you a deep sense of relaxation.

Reflexology

This process is based on the idea that injury or disease in one part of the body can cause a buildup of substance that irritates nerve endings in reflex points in the feet, hands and ears. Thus, reflexing – applying pressure on and gentile manipulation at the points of the feet, hands and ears – corresponds to and helps specific areas of the body.

Example

The reflexes in the fingers and toes correspond to the head and neck. For best results massage these reflex points for five to ten minutes at least twice a day and at least four times a week. Sometimes relief will come quickly, or it can take several days, weeks or longer for reflexology to help.

Caution: if pain is related to a medical condition seek help from a doctor.

For each ailment you can apply pressure on the hands, ears and feet for relief.

Jaw Pain

This winter I fell on the ice on the right side of my face swelling it up giving me a lot of pain and a large contusion. I had intensive pain in the jaw area although X-rays proved negative. After running across reflexologist Dr. Flocco site I thought why not try it. On his site he directs you to use the tip of your index finger, locate the small flap of cartridge at the top of the earlobe. Then move your finger about half an inch toward the back edge of the ear. Place the tip of the thumb behind the ear and with the index finger on the front, squeeze gently, applying firm, but not painful pressure. Apply pressure on both ears at once.

After you have applied the reflexology on the ear for five to ten minutes, do it on your feet. While seated, place you left foot on the opposite knee. With the left hand grasp the big toe and apply pressure with the tip of the thumb to the widest part of the big toe in the area closest to the second toe. Switch legs and repeat, exercise both for five to ten minutes.

After trying these methods on the ears and feet for the prescribed amount of time, four times a week, after two weeks the pain had dissipated to the extent I no longer had pain. Wow, to say the least I was amazed it worked!

Lower Back Pain

I was so amazed this worked like it did I thought I would try it on my chronic back pain I developed when I was younger. I had been taking Ibuprofen for it forever; I just thought that maybe this would do the job.

On the site the good doctor directs you to find the area just above the wrist on the thumb edge of the left palm. Grasping from behind with the fingers of the opposite hand, apply gentile pressure to this point with the tip of the thumb. Gently roll the tip of your thumb while applying pressure. Switch hands and repeat for five to ten minutes four times a week. I did these exercises for one week and the back pain completely disappeared from my body. I have not had back pain now for several years; now I am sure I was onto something.

Reducing Urinary Frequency

As I have grown older I was getting up to go to the bathroom at least twice a night. I have looked at several different drug treatments whose side effects are worse than the treatment. I looked again on the site and found an exercise that the doctor said would eliminate getting up at night completely. You need to do this simple exercise four to six times daily and he vowed this would get rid of the urine frequency.

The site says, while sitting, place your left foot on your right knee. Find the spot on the inner edge of the left foot that is a direct line below the ankle bone, where the inner side of the foot and the sole of the foot meet. Using your right thumb, apply pressure on this point. Gently grasp and stabilize the left foot with the fingers on the right hand while you do this. Repeat on the opposite foot. The exercise should last from five to ten minutes. Do this daily until urination frequency disappears.

I tried it for two weeks and the urination frequency finally, at long last, disappeared. I am happy to say that reflexologist Dr. Flocco has done wonders for my pain management. By simply following his direction the problems have all gone away.

Depression in Teenagers – Now What Can We Do?

No doubt you have seen the recent news headlines about a federal panel that recommended the FDA that anti-depressant medications carry the strongest possible warning label for use in children and teenagers. This recommendation to the FDA looks the medical community, especially those who work with depressed young people. The biggest problem from the treatment community's point of view was not the recommendation for the warning label, but the way that the media depicted the panel's recommendation. The panel reported that 2% to 4% of children and teens who were given anti-depressants for the treatment of depression became suicidal, that is they had suicidal thoughts, or made suicidal attempts of one kind or another. None of the 4,000 children and teens studied committed suicide. What the media did not report well is the fact that 15% of children and teens with depression who receive no treatment will commit suicide. These 15% will not just think about it, but will actually kill themselves. So what are we to do? If the media had their way it sees that no teens with depression would receive anti-depressants. As a result the suicide rate for those who could be using the medication would rise from near zero percent to about fifteen percent. But at least we would not have to be concerned about evil medications. Look, I understand that there actually are young people, even adults, who have become suicidal only after beginning treatment with an anti-depressant. Some have in fact gone on to take their own lives. This is absolutely tragic. But so is the fact that untreated depression is potentially a fatal disease. Fifteen out of one hundred young people with depression take their own lives. They should be allowed to receive a treatment that will lower the suicide rate dramatically, and without any stigma attached to it by the media. Recently we had a patient brought to our counseling center named John (not his real name). John was rebellious, angry, withdrew, and in trouble often, and yet he was diagnosed and treated for depression. When we think of someone who is depressed, we usually picture a sad, tearful, lonesome person. But teenagers with depression do not look like adults with depression. Current studies show that there are about as many teenagers who are depressed as there are adults that are depressed. However, depression is exhibited far differently by teenagers than by adults. Teenagers do not commonly display display, self-depreciation, or talk about feeling hopeless like adults do. Teenagers with Major Depression are described in diagnostic manuals as often becoming negative and antisocial. Feelings of wanting to leave home, or of not being understoodand approved of increase. The teen often changes, and becomes more restless, grouchy, or aggressive. A relationship to cooperate in family ventures, and withdrawal from social activities, with retreat to one's room are frequent. School difficulties are reasonably as concentration is affected. Sometimes there is inattention to personal appearance and increased emotionality. Often there is an increased sensitivity to rejection in love relationships as well. Teenage boys will often become aggressive, agitated, and get into trouble at home, at school, or with the law. Teenage girls will sometimes become preoccupied with the themes of death or dying, and becoming decreasing concerned about how they look. Suicidal thoughts are common. Some studies suggest that 500,000 teens attempt suicide each year, and 5000 are successful. Increased use of alcohol or other drugs is common, along with other forms of "self-destructive behaviors." Poor self-esteem is common with teenagers, but especially with those who are depressed. Parents are often confused and frustrated when their teens begin to act like this. Sometimes parents become stern disciplinarians, or even put the teen down, which only serves to increase feelings of guilt and depression. Other times, parents feel helpless, and stand by waiting for adulthood to arrive. Of course neither course is the right one to take. If you know a teen who behaviors have changed to look like what has been described above, let the parents know that there is help available, and encourage the family to seek help from a professional. With proper diagnosis and treatment a depressed teen, or adult, can be greatly helped. If someone close to you is suffering from depression, first please understand that depression is a very emotionally painful condition. For some people with depression it turns into a "terminal illness" due to suicide. Please take the situation seriously. 1) Get a medical evaluation. Symptoms of depression can be the result of a wide assortment of illnesses, including thyroid problems, viral infections, and other factors. 2) Deprex is an amino acid and homeopathic medicine for the treatment of depression that we have seen work well with our patients. Agoraphobia and Soclal Phobia

Agoraphobia – Fear of Open Spaces

Agoraphobia is a little more complex than that – it is the fear of being in any situation where things could go wrong without the chance to escape or get help. A lady contacted me who had been suffering worsening conditions for more than seven years. Initially it started as a little unease when people visited the house and developed into a situation where she could not go into a shop a bank or any public place without full-blown panic attack symptoms. Her heart would pound and she would feel sick and sweat all over, almost fainting at the thought of having to go and buy a loaf of bread. She also became more and more distressed at people visiting her home. Whether her symptoms were those of social phobia and or agoraphobia was never medically diagnosed. What was worse for her, was the youngest of her children was beginning to copy her behaviour in social situations and this was the final prompt for her to take action. Her doctor had given her medication but she didn’t find it helped change anything in these difficult situations, just dulling the panic attack symptoms. No one really knows the causes of agoraphobia, although their may be some parental influences that affect whether a person is likely to develop either of these conditions such as being over protective or over emphasising the danger of strangers.

Social Phobia – More than being shy

Social phobia is much more than being shy, it is an absolute dread in certain situations that include meeting strangers, shopping, answering the telephone or starting conversations. We can make the mistake of perceiving someone as a shy person when in fact they are struggling hard to contain their panic attack symptoms. Unfortunately, as with my client, over time these symptoms become worse and often there is an increasing number of situations in which they develop. Guilt exacerbates the situation, guilt that loved ones have to go through it too, certainly in this case – the lady was upset that her children had to go to the shops for her, that she nor her children could have family and friends around, nor could she go to help them out or even attend family events. It was a vicious cycle of torment, in more ways than one. It is no doubt difficult for anyone not having been in this situation to even come close to understanding how badly it affects people’s lives and relationships.

Agoraphobia Treatment

Traditional treatment for both agoraphobia and social phobia is usually provided in two ways – drugs and CBT. Anti-depressants are often prescribed since there can be correlation between depression and phobias, or mild tranquilizers to dull the panic attack symptoms. CBT is usually offered and is very effective, it is typically anything up to fourteen sessions and helps you identify unrealistic or unhelpful beliefs and teaches the skills to react more positively in those situations that are causing difficulty. My client had two sessions – the first one taking a full history and then a hypnotic therapy session. After the session I put her in the car and went to our local supermarket, her husband who had been in the car waiting outside, followed. We went straight in to the supermarket and danced, yes, danced in the aisles, knocking a few displays and trolleys I might add as neither of us were particularly skilled at a tango. The second session, two months later, to make sure that all was well and ensure that the therapy was embedded really deeply in her subconscious mind. Four years on and whilst I don’t think she has danced in the aisles lately, she has attended her cousin’s wedding, goes to church every week and no longer sends her kids for a loaf.
