Obesity Grows in Adults and Children

Obesity is often used for comic effect but the actual definition of condition of being obese is increased body weight caused by excessive accumulation of fat. Calculating Body Mass Index or BMI can determine the difference between overweight and obese by using height and weight of a particular person. Both terms are considered beyond the weight that is considered healthy for a given height. BMI categories are:

• Underweight = less than18.5
• Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
• Overweight = 25-29.9
• Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

Childhood obesity has grown significantly in recent years. Roughly 30% of adolescents are obese due to lack of exercise and poor diet. Among the risks from being obese are diabetes, high blood pressure, trouble sleeping and increased risk of heart disease not to mention low self-esteem that can arise from being overweight or obese. Studies have shown that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80% chance of becoming an obese adult. Obesity can be caused by many different and complex factors including biological, genetic and behavioral. Managing obesity must start with determining which factor category you or your child fits in, then start a weight-management program, changing eating habits and increasing physical activity are the perfect start. Obese women have a higher chance of dying from cancer of the gallbladder, breast, uterus, cervix and ovaries than non-obese women. Obesity can also lead to an increased risk of many obstetric and gynecological complications for women. These include infertility, abnormal menstruation and miscarriage and birth problems for both mother and child.

The term morbid obesity is defined as a disease of excess body fat, which can adversely affect general health, mobility and quality of life. Persons with morbid obesity are typically about 100 pounds overweight and have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more. Statistics indicate that over 60 million American adults are morbidly obese, with a BMI of 40 or more, while another 9.6 million have a BMI of 35-40. The Health risks associated with Morbid Obesity are significantly higher than being obese and are a huge risk factor for hypertension, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, diabetes, respiratory problems and some cancers.

Diet and exercise are the best ways to combat obesity. Changing eating habits, less snacking and making healthy choices are also needed to make changes to your weight and health. Do not be taken in by those "fad diets" and metabolism stimulators. Weight Loss takes some work and effort on your part but the results are worth it. When looking at morbid obesity you might want to consult with a doctor about the possibility of Bariatric services. Bariatric medical weight loss programs are for those people with serious weight problems, which do not respond to diet and exercise alone. Bariatric surgery also is performed for those unable to loose weight by more conventional means. This includes stomach resection, lipectomy (surgical removal of fat) and liposuction. There should not be used lightly.

Type 2 Diabetes – Add Whole Grains To Your Diet Plan

There is a plethora of nutritional advice or information available in magazines, on the web, and anywhere you can spot advertising. On your way to work alone, you may pass by a billboard advertising a supplement, a nutritional service, or a product related to eating. How often are you presented with a suggestion of this kind? Perhaps more than you think.

Truthfully, most advice is not helpful, as it is not relevant to you. Your situation is unique. As much as some general advice applies, you probably need a particular kind to make a difference in your life. While you may be dealing with a health issue like Type 2 diabetes or a mild degree of obesity, your health issue and how you need to treat it is particular to you.

With that said, when it comes to carbohydrates or carbs, any time whole grains are mentioned you should pay close attention. They are beneficial to your body, and the only way they would be an unfortunate addition to your life would be if you are consuming too much. However, no one has ever suggested you overconsume whole grain foods.

In short, you should look to replace regular carbs such as…

  • white bread,
  • white rice,
  • traditional pasta

with the whole grain kind as much as you can. Whether you are dealing with Type 2 diabetes or a weight problem is irrelevant. Of course, they will help with blood sugar control and keep you feeling full, which helps treat those issues. However, those are small benefits when stacked against the real advantage of whole grains. People who eat whole grains instead of refined versions have…

  • less insulin resistance,
  • a lower diabetes risk and
  • tend to be slimmer.

Whole grain foods will help prevent future problems, or the escalation of a current health issue.

However, you may still not be convinced because of something we have not mentioned yet – the taste. To many people, whole grains do not taste as good as the processed kind, which makes it a tough sell. However, why does it have to be a sacrifice to no longer eat white bread, rice, or regular pasta? It may take a little time to adjust, but you can do it. For example, if you undercook your pasta by around 1 to 2 minutes and finish cooking it in a sauté pan with the sauce you want to add, making sure the sauce has touched all surfaces of the pasta, it will taste great.

Eating whole grains should never be a sacrifice: it should be a choice you make because it serves your best interests.

Moreover, remember – there is nothing wrong with not eating whole grains all of the time. Just make sure whole-grains are a staple.

Is Technology Causing Your Child's Obesity?

My regular readers know I grew up in the 70's and we did not have game-boys and DS's, let alone iPhones, Wii's or X-Box gaming systems. We played outside and did whatever we could to play for "five more minutes" when mom called us in for supper.

We must ask ourselves, in today's society, are video games making kids fat? Let's explore this topic.

There are three types of kids:

1. Those focused on sports and not really interested in video gaming.

2. Those focused on sports who spend some of their downtime gaming.

3. Those without an interest in sports who spend all of their free time gaming, to the point where they do not do anything else.

To clarify, by the term "sports" we are including traditional non-required sports (baseball, football, volleyball, soccer, etc), cheer, dance, gymnastics, swimming, cycling, running, weight lifting and any other team or solo program that provides exercise for a period of time of 30 minutes or more, daily or at least three times a week. This does not include mandated classes such as gym or PE class.

So what is the connection between video gaming and obesity in children?

A typical child spends eight hours a day in a classroom. Sometimes thirty minutes in gym class. Outside of that thirty minutes, the only time a child has to be active and exercise his or her body is after school hours or on the weekends. If they are not involved in an activity that allows them to move their body, they become very sedentary and as time passes, the weight gain begins. The dietary habits of children are not the best. We all know that. Chicken nuggets, burgers, french fries, ice cream, mac and cheese, pop tarts and juice boxes or sodas are the main staples of the childhood diet plan. Without of course, your parents are focused on health and wellness and then the diet plan shifts to a healthier one, which will usually also include exercise and activity. If a child is spending the majority of their time sitting, either in school or at home in front of a TV or gaming console, plus eating foods heavy in starches and sugars, how is he or she expected to have a healthy body? It's just not feasibly possible.

Add to that the issues we experience in our society with ADD and ADHD. Perhaps those issues are related toactivity and poor diets? We did not have ADD and ADHD in the 70's. Kids burnt off excess energy and ate healthier meals. Fast food was a treat, not an everyday occurrence. Obesity and focus issues were not as prevalent as they are today. All of this is occurring simply because people are not taking personal responsibility for themselves and for passing these lessons onto the next generation honey-boo-boo.

The great thing about all of this is that we can change things easily. We get to CHOOSE how we treat our body. Parents who complain about their child not eating anything but fast food or crap need to take a step back and look at this from an objective place instead of as a victim. I have yet to see a child get in a car, go to a fast food restaurant and buy themselves a happy meal. The parents have taught them about this food, taught them to eat poorly and pushed them off to be occupied by video games instead of engaging with their child and forming a bond that will allow them to grow and expand to become a beneficial member of society. Yes, I said it. I believe that kids who are not taught about self-respect and personal responsibility have a higher chance of being obese and in victim mode as adults. They become a drain on society through health care programs, social aid programs and even disability payments that would be unnecessary if they choose to treat their body as a temple instead of as a trash bin.

The cycle begins in childhood. Advances into the teenage years and on to adulthood. As parents, we are collectively responsible for not only teaching our children the value of being self-respectful and fueling our body and mind with healthy nutrient den food and thoughts, but showing them the value by each of us LEADING by example with our own mind and body.

The next time your child requests to eat their fast food in front of the video game console, take a moment and step back to evaluate the situation. Ask yourself how you can make a different choice. A choice that will impact your child's life immediately, for decades to come and even on into future generations.

Be self-responsible. Be self-loving. Be self-respectful. Make a difference. Choose to live differently. Choose to teach those around you by leading by example. Be happy! Live life to the fullest! You deserve to have it all!

3 Ways to Increase Semen Volume Naturally

Increasing semen volume not only provides a thrust to male fertility by improving the sperm count but also helps increase pleasure on ejaculation. This is largely because a larger volume of semen requires stronger contractions to release it on ejaculation which help intensify pleasure.

Moreover, women also tend to consider men who produce more semen as more virile and potent. No wonder, semen volume is being seen as a measure of your manhood.

Here are 3 Natural Ways to Increase Your Semen Volume:

Increase Semen with Certain foods

There are some foods that are known to enhance semen volume in men. Semen is composed of a combination of proteins, vitamins, minerals and body fluids. Foods such as celery, oysters, pumpkin and sunflower seeds can do wonders for your semen production.

Not only this, green barley which is a young shoot of the barley plant can also be a great help. It is highly rich in nutrients.

Moreover, there are certain foods that are rich in zinc. They are extremely important for the production of testosterone and semen. Low testosterone levels not only result in reduced libido but also affects semen volume and sperm count. It is important to note that almost 70% of the zinc in your body is contained in your semen. It is but obvious that you lose it on ejaculation and hence it becomes important to replenish it with your diet.

Foods that are rich in zinc include shellfish like oysters, animal protein like lamb, beef etc., dairy. poultry products etc.,

Include EFA’s in your Diet and have Plenty of Water

Essential fatty acids are also extremely important for semen production since a fat deficient diet results in low testosterone levels. Moreover, dehydration also leads to reduced semen volume. Hence, it is important to have at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. Not only does it help increase semen volume but also rids your body of harmful toxins.

Natural or Herbal Supplements

Finally, it is important to take some natural or herbal supplement. It is not possible to stick to a diet that can help increase semen largely due to our lifestyle. Hence, it becomes all the more important to take some supplements that can ensure increase semen production and overall improved sexual function.

Natural semen enhancers are prepared with a potent mix of time tested herbs and other nutrients that not only increase semen volume but also ensure rock hard erections, increased sex drive and improved ejaculatory control. Over and above, there are some high quality supplements that are clinically approved and do not have any side effects.

Kinds of Diseases

"Disease" originally referred to what it says: dis-ease. A person who did not feel at ease or was uncomfortable and not well was said to be at a dis-ease. Nowdays of course when you talk about disease, we mean a particular discomfort caused by a dysfunction of some part of the body.

Some diseases attack very suddenly. We called these "acute diseases" ("acute" means "sharp"). These can be serious or not, but they usually make the patient feel quite ill. The acute disease ends with a patient either dying of the disease or recovering from it. Sometimes, a disease can continue for a long time. This is called a chronic disease (from 'chronos', meaning 'time'). If an organ of the body is so damaged that it can no longer work well, we now call this ailment an "organic disease".

Many organic diseases are caused by parasites which are small organisms that live within us and take nourishment from our systems. Parasites do damage to their hosts and are responsible for "parasitic diseases". Some parasites, like worms, are big enough to be seen with the naked eye. In some parts of the world, people can easily pick up hookworms when they walk barefoot. These worms travel into the intestines and live on blood. This disease can easily weakened a person and some of them die.

On the other hand, some parasites as so small that they are can not be seen without a microscope. Such parasites are called microorganisms or germs. They cost the "germ diseases". Germs are transported in many ways from person-to-person, most especially when someone coughs or sneezes. Sometimes they can get into our systems through food and drinking water. It is so easy for a sick person to communicate their disease to a healthy one. For this reason, such diseases are called "communicable diseases" or "infectious diseases".

If the germs of a certain disease are easily spread from person to person, it is called a "contagious disease". Germs come in many sizes and types. Relatively small germ cells are called protozoa and the most common "protozoan disease" is malaria. The malaria parasite lives in red blood cells and destroys them. Many people in the tropical parts the world suffer from malaria every year, which probably kills more people than any other disease.

Other germs are very simple plant cells called fungi or molds. Athlete's foot is an example of a "fungus disease".

Bacteria are even simpler than just germs. They are living things that can be seen only through an ordinary microscope. "Bacterial diseases" include tuberculosis, scarlet fever, tonsillitis and many other simple infections.

Finally, there are other germs too small to be seen under an ordinary microscope that they need to be checked under an electron microscope. These are the viruses that are responsible for the most familiar hardships like measles, chickenpox, mumps and the flu. These are also called "viral diseases".

There are other types of diseases that are not caused by germs. In fact, disease can be brought on by any physical or chemical injury. Too much sun can bring sunburn or sunstroke. Some chemicals that enter the body can be poisonous. Sometimes a harmless substance becomes poisonous to a particular person. It makes a person sensitive to a substance in food, pollen, or even some medicine. He is said to suffer from an allergy, which is a form of disease.

People in some lines of work sometimes run into particular risks of poison or other chemical damage. Some people who work in the paint industry (because of their exposure to lead) may absorb dangerous chemicals into their bloodstream. Lead poisoning is an example of an "occupational disease".

A person can also be sick because of what he has not taken into the body. Remember that the body requires a certain amount of good food and clean water to live. If the food or water lacks certain substances that the body requires, the body develops a "deficiency disease" like anemia (which is the lack of iron in the blood). In the absence of the necessary vitamins, diseases like crickets and scurvy develop. These are also known as "vitamin deficiency diseases".

3 Tips to Get a Rock Hard Erect Penis Naturally

Do you experience getting a hard erections?

Erectile dysfunction is more than enough to put any man under a lot of stress. It is the most disturbing sexual problem in men.

However, there are some simple ways to get harder and longer lasting erections.

3 Tips to Get a Rock Hard Penis Naturally

1. Boost Blood Flow to the Penis

Reduced blood flow to the penis is one of the most important causes of erectile problems in men. Regular exercise can help increase blood flow to the penis. This is why you must hit the gym at least 4-5 days a week.

Besides this, there are certain foods that can help increase blood circulation in your body. Foods that are rich in essential fats not only unclog your arteries but also keep them well oiled to encourage better blood circulation. Such foods include olives, avocados, fish like tuna, salmons etc.,

2. Boost Nitric Oxide Production with l-arginine

Though most men are not aware of this, it is not possible to get a hard erection without enough nitric oxide in your body. Nitric oxide ensures muscle relaxation in the penis so that blood vessels can expand and more blood can flow into the erectile tissue resulting in a hard and firm erection.

Nitric oxide production in your body declines with age and leads to erectile problems.

L-arginine is the amino acid that helps increase nitric oxide production naturally.

Food sources of l-arginine include red meat, dairy, poultry products etc.,

3. Natural Erection Pills

Last but not the least, natural erection pills are a great way to boost sexual potency in men. Such pills combine various herbs and other nutrients in a potent mix to ensure rock solid erections.

Such pills not only enhance blood flow to the penis but also boost nitric oxide and testosterone production in your body. This gives a boost to your libido and also ensure rock solid erections.

Some of the ingredients used in such pills include ginseng, ginkgo, maca, muira pauma, tongat ali etc.,

However, the top notch pills include certain ingredients like Bioperine and Pomegranate 70% ellagen to ensure faster and better results.

Such pills do not have any side effects and this is why most men prefer having such pills in place of prescribed drugs. Over and above, they not even require a prescription and this can save you a lot of embarrassment.

Type 2 Diabetes – Low Blood Sugar in Older People

The human brain is rich in nerve cells and is the most energy-demanding organ in our body. Our brain uses half of our body’s sugar energy. Thinking, memory, and learning are linked closely to your sugar levels and how efficiently your brain uses this source. When blood sugar levels go extremely low, as in poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes, brain damage can result. Older adults are especially vulnerable.

Johns Hopkins University and the University of Chicago in the United States reported their findings in June of 2018 in the medical journal Diabetologia. A total of 3.1 percent of 2001 participants, with an average age of 76, had a history of severe low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). The participants who had suffered several episodes of hypoglycemia had more than twice (2.34%) the risk of developing dementia as those with better sugar control. MRI’s taken of the brain showed those people who had a history of hypoglycemia also averaged a lower than usual brain size.

Researchers continued to follow 1263 of the participants and found…

  • low blood sugar levels were linked with new cases of dementia and
  • the participants who had incidents of severe hypoglycemia were more than twice (2.54%) more likely to develop new cases of dementia.

The investigators concluded there is a definite link between extremely low blood sugar and dementia. They suggest adults who are at high risk for developing dementia discuss which Type 2 diabetes medications are safest for preventing hypoglycemia…

  • normal blood sugar levels range from 70 to 99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L) for healthy individuals on awakening.
  • two hours after meals blood sugar levels should not be above 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) in non-diabetic individuals.

Some people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, are used to having blood sugar levels that would be considered abnormal for healthy people, so they need to discuss their lab work with their doctor.

Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar level are…

  • shakiness,
  • nervousness or anxiety,
  • sweating, chills, clammy skin,
  • feeling irritable,
  • feeling confused,
  • having a fast heartbeat,
  • experiencing lightheadedness or feeling dizzy,
  • hunger or nausea,
  • sleepiness,
  • blurred vision,
  • tingling or numbness in your lips or tongue,
  • a headache,
  • weakness or tiredness,
  • anger, stubbornness, or sadness,
  • lack of coordination,
  • nightmares or crying out during sleep,
  • seizures,
  • unconsciousness.

When hypoglycemia strikes, it is essential to treat it quickly. Always carry food for emergencies. A tube of cake icing, a cup of milk with a tablespoon of sugar, or fruit juice will put sugar back into the blood quickly. Then call your doctor’s office.

How to Understand Obesity

People suffering from obesity face a real life threatening health challenge. What's more, most of them know this and have come to accept this as a condition about which they can do very little or nothing. This is not necessarily true, but many obese people perceive themselves as powerless when it comes to tackling this problematic condition.

There are, of course exceptions. The unfortunate individual obsessity is the result of a physical dysfunction will have to learn to cope with the condition as best as possible to alleviate the suffering that is caused by it.

There is also a large part of this group that can do something about their obesity, alas, this is easier said (or written) than done.

A rising number of people suffer from obesity. If we look at obesity statistics, and I quote "data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics showed that the percentage of obese people (body mass index [BMI]> 30) in the United States has risen to 33.5 percent in the 1999 to 2000 survey ", this would indicate epidemic proportions. (Source: utdol.com)

This would probably point to a causal link between eating habits, lifestyle, convenience, emotional state and a lack of self empowerment. Human beings are creatures of habit and routine. Once a habit routine has been locked in, it is quite the challenge to break it, even for healthy people. Moreover, obesity is a condition that requires individuals who suffer from it to have to spend more energy for daily tasks.

If on top of that an obese person has to invest yet more energy in breaking an unproductive habit to create a new more productive one, the bar is set so high, that many feel it is impossible to reach. They become stuck in this vicious circle, so that conditions are now set to make a bad situation even worse.

Breaking the habits that create obesity can be done, taking little steps at a time. This puts the finishing line far into the future, creating yet more challenges, because everyone, obese or not, has to factor into the fact that all events in life are cyclic. In a period of lower energy levels, it takes but a small emotional accident to break ones' resolve.

To understand the challenge an obese person has to face, one would have to imagine something absurd. For example, let's ask Carl Lewis to win the olympic long jump discipline with a bag of 50 kilos strapped to his back. That's impossible !, most of us would say. Well, now you are just a little closer to the mindset most obese people have to deal with when it comes to trying to get back to health.

Lymphedema and Swimming

Swimming to reduce leg lymphedema…

For years I’ve been telling people with Leg Lymphedema that the best exercise to reduce the swelling is swimming. Why? There are a few reasons swimming is the best exercise.

One, because you are horizontal when swimming rather than vertical and your leg below your torso. This is similar to when you are lying down or elevating your leg to reduce the swelling.

Two, when swimming your bodily fluids are circulating. The movement of the limbs and muscles are creating a force to move the fluids throughout your body. The movement of kicking while swimming is helping to push the fluids out of your leg. Your blood and lymphatic fluid are being moved more rapidly when swimming rather than sitting or lying down.

Three, the water itself offers a gentle compression when in a pool. It is more gentle than a compression stocking, but it is still helpful for when you stand in the pool in between swimming. Swimming is great, but even standing and moving your leg through the water is helpful.

And four, swimming is non-impact. That means, your foot is not striking the floor with each step as it is with walking or running. Walking and running actually cause leg lymphedema to become worse because of all of the pounding/impact and gravity. Yes, they help circulation a little, but the impact causes the fluids to be packed down into the leg rather than pushing the fluids out of the leg. Your body is vertical and the fluids run down. Swimming is very gentle and effective for those of us with leg lymphedema compared to any other aerobic exercise.

I’ve been dealing with leg lymphedema since my 1991 cancer surgery. At the time, I already had a physical therapy degree, was a fitness trainer, and a gymnastics coach. I knew how the body functioned.

I had malignant melanoma in my right thigh. I was told that I would be bed-ridden for the rest of my life by many doctors after cancer surgery. The surgery was the only way to save my life. That was if it wasn’t already too late. The doctor was not sure if the cancer had already spread to my lymph nodes and throughout my body. If it had, it would have been too late. Going into the surgery I did not know whether I had weeks to live or a lifetime of being in bed.

The doctors removed the malignant tumor and the lymph nodes from my groin area during the surgery. It was two surgeries combined that lasted many hours. Immediately after the surgery, my leg was as wide as my waist. I had a tree trunk and a long way to go to reduce it to normal size. My life was saved, but my leg and life were forever changed. It took nearly one year to reduce my leg to almost normal size. I have maintained my leg lymphedema extremely well because I am so disciplined.

A few quick tips for reducing the swelling… elevate, compression, circulation/light exercise, and a very healthy diet of various fruits and vegetables – that’s the secret to reducing the swelling and keeping it down. Eat foods such as fruits and vegetables. Stay away from processed foods, fast-foods, junk foods, alcohol, soda, and other unhealthy foods.

I studied physical therapy in college and have been a CSCS for many years. I know how to maintain health and recover from illness and injury. I admit, my knowledge has made it easier for me to maintain my leg lymphedema, but you can do it too.

What prompted me to write this today? I go all winter long wishing I had access to a pool so I can maintain my lymphedema better. This week the pool opened and I paid for my pool pass. I’ll be able to keep my leg looking and feeling good, hardly any swelling on non-working days. YAY!

I swam for the first time this summer yesterday and my leg felt and looked great afterward. Elevating today and it feels good. I can’t wait to go to my ballroom dance social later this evening!

Top 4 Cichlid Fish Diseases To Watch Out For

Cichlid Diseases:
Although unpleasant, discussing disease with any animal is an important part of pet ownership. Knowing what to look for and what to do will (in the long run) keep everyone healthy and happy. Before we get into the cichlid diseases, make sure you have a back-up plan in the form of an aquarium that you will use for quarantine purposes. This is most important as sick cichlids will need to be placed away from the other cichlids (kind of like a hospital).

Here are the top 4 cichlid diseases to watch out for:

1. Cotton Wool Disease (fungal infection) can be identified by erratic swimming, damaged fins,
coating of the scales (grayish in color) and patching in the gill area.

Cotton Wool Disease can be easily prevented by simple tank cleaning and maintenance. Make sure all foods (and carcasses if any) are removed and the aquarium is kept clean.

Cotton Wool Disease is contagious so quarantining will be necessary and your cichlid moved as soon as possible.

2. Hexamita ("hole in the head") can be identified by weight loss, appetite loss and indentations in
the head area (hence the term "hole in the head"). The best preventative is proper diet and good water quality. If you suspect Hexamita, immediately quarantine your cichlid (when in doubt; separate).

3. Swim Bladder Disease is a disease that interferes with buoyancy. This disease will cause your cichlid to swim erratically at or near the top of the aquarium. The # 1 cause of this cichlid disease is poor diet or over feeding (which can and often does cause bloating and gas).

4. Cichlid Fish Tuberculosis is the worst of the worst when it comes to cichlid diseases! Cichlid tuberculosis can destroy (wipe out) an entire population very quickly! This is highly contagious and symptoms of this highly contagious cichlid disease include loss of appetite (which is a sign of most cichlid diseases) and especially a stomach that is sunk in. If you notice (or even suspect) these, quarantine your cichlid immediately and if another aquarium is available, quarantine the other cichlids as well until the situation is under control!

It's unfortunate, but ALL life gets sick from time to time and the real secret is knowing how to identify the problem and then what to do. Always remember that the # 1 prevention of sickness and disease is in fact knowledge. without it, you'll never know what to look for or how to treat it. To your happy cichlids!

9-Question Interest Inventory: A Great Way to Learn About Your Students

The first homework assignment of every school year for every student in each of my middle school math classes included a 9-question “interest inventory.” This particular interest inventory is a self-assessment tool that invites students to reflect on their past experiences.

My students agreed that answering the 9 interest inventory questions was a nice change from the typical “What’s your favorite this/that” survey, and I certainly had fun reading my students’ responses! Straight away – at the very start of the school year – it is a very good way to get a bigger picture (even just a slightly bigger picture) of each student.

For teachers, the interest inventory can provide good initial information about student strengths and weaknesses. In fact, I think this questionnaire invited some students to talk with me in person about their strengths and interests, giving me even more information about learning styles.

Here is the 9-question inventory. I always asked students to answer all parts of each question, and to neatly write their answers in complete sentences.

1. What is your favorite activity or subject in school? Why? What is your least favorite? Why?

2. What subjects are difficult for you? What makes them the hardest?

3. If you could learn about anything you wanted to, what would you choose to learn about? Please be specific. (For example: meteorology, science fiction writing, architecture, cooking, carpentry, movie-making, etc.)

4. If people were to come to you for information about something you know a lot about, what would the topic be?

5. If you could plan a field trip, where would you go? Why?

6. Fill in the blank and rate EACH choice 1 = best, 2 = ok, 3 = worst

I learn ____ alone.

I learn ____ with one other person.

I learn ____ in a small group.

I learn ____ in a large group.

7. What helps you learn? (For example: hands on experience, reading quietly, taking notes, reading out loud, etc)

8. What projects – either past school assignments or outside of school – are you most proud of? Why?

9. Think of a great teacher you’ve had. Describe what made this teacher so terrific.

One student knew a lot about horses, and throughout the year gave me unsolicited tidbits of information (such as defining riding styles and saddles), and every once in a while updated me on her training and competitions. Getting to know her a little bit more outside the math classroom helped to engage her inside the math classroom.

Another student was proud of training her hamster, named El Noche, to win the local Petco Hamster Derby! I had to ask her about it because I had never heard of Petco Hamster Derbies. She happily described how she executed her training regimen in one of the hallways in her home.

The student who answered “I want to learn how to draw faces” is now a student at LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts. Without asking her at the start of the school year, I wonder how long it would have taken me to notice this very, very quiet student’s inclination toward art…perhaps in the spring of that year when we studied geometry and she told me that she like how I used different colors to help highlight specific angles, sides, etc.

Questions 3, 4, 5, and 8 always gave me the most smile-inducing answers. I used the 9 questions above for 6th graders, but in general all the questions are great reflection questions, requiring answers with much more relevant information than favorite colors/food/sports/etc.

How to Ejaculate More Than Once? – The Fastest Way Possible

Has this question ever crossed your mind? If you have experienced an orgasm, studies show the answer is likely yes. In fact you would not even need a study to tell you that. An orgasm is one of the most visceral and intense experiences a human being can feel, so it is only natural that you would want more of that euphoric feeling. Ejaculating more than once is not just a personal thing however. It also is a major factor behind increasing the pleasure during intercourse with your partner. While it may feel great for the male, the same can be said of what is done for the female. So just what can be done to make this climax happen over and over?

Men’s Health Customer Journal, a source of medical research and development, states that the first thing needed to orgasm more than one time is increased levels of testosterone in the mail. Testosterone is like motor oil. Oil makes a car run smoothly, and go further on the road effectively and efficiently. Testosterone very much follows the same principles. It is a giant driving force behind male stamina, which allows a man to perform over and over again. Testosterone can be increased in a variety of ways, but the quickest is usually through pill form. Doctors state that almost all of these pills are harmless since they include safe amounts of herbal compounds designed to positively influence your libido strength and production.

Another important issue for a man to orgasm repeatedly is his food intake. It goes without saying that a healthy diet will give you more energy and motivation in the bedroom, but eating right reacts with the aforementioned testosterone boosts in the highest capacity. Herbal compounds taken in to increase testosterone will take effect and run their course on its own, however eating right speeds up this process dramatically.

When you are wondering how to ejaculate more than once in the fastest way possible, do your research about how you can boost your testosterone. Doctors recommend pills most frequently because they are as harmless as over the counter vitamins. Specialists in sexual health actually spend their living designing such solutions for men seeking increased pleasure with their bedroom partner.

The Power of Expectation and How it Affects Your Health

Once, when I was nine years old, I came down with a horrible case of tonsillitis. I remember going to the doctor, (something that was rare in my family; you only went if you were really sick) feeling miserable and scared, but also knowing that this man would have somehow fix me. As he declared his verdict regarding my illness, and took out his prescription pad, he asked my mother "Is your daughter allergic to any medications?" My mom allowed for a moment, and I looked at her questioningly. Was I allergic to anything? This seemed really important. What if I was? What would happen to me? My mother said no, the prescription was written and we were sent home.

That evening after taking my antibiotic, I began to shake uncontrollably. I complained of an immense headache and continued shaking as my mother held me. She did not seem very concerned, yet I KNEW I was allergic to this pill that I had taken. Before I fell sleep that night, I told my mom that the medicine had made me sick and I would not take it anymore. The next morning, my mother had me drink a tall glass of iced tea that tasted funny. Later that afternoon, my mom asked me how I felt. I told her I was doing much better, and that's when she dropped the bomb on me. She had laced my ice tea that morning with my medication. Guess what, no allergic reaction. I was never allergic to the pills, but my powerful subconscious mind, accepted a mere suggestion by the doctor that I might be, and my body acted accordingly.

Most of us have no idea how loudly awesome our minds are, and how incoming information continually reshapes our experience. When I took that antibiotic, it had a nocebo effect on me. A nocebo is the exact opposite of a placebo. A placebo offers health benefits without any medical reason to do so, while a nocebo hormones your health without any medical explanation. Researchers are finding more and more evidence that what we believe, or expect to happen medically, has a substantial effect on what actually does happen.

Currently, pharmaceutical companies are flummoxed by this placebo effect when they test new drugs. As much as 75% of relief from pain or depression, in some trials, can be attributed to the placebo effect. In essence, the person never took any medication, only a sugar pill, and their condition improved anyway. They simply believed that they would get better. Studies also find that people receive more 'relief' from red placebos than any other color, and the higher priced the place is, the more the patients report a reduction in symptoms. On the other side of the coin, people who believe they are going to die in surgery have a higher mortality rate while under the knife than people who do not. What the heck is going on here?

Again, we have to go back to the power of belief. The subconscious mind, which not only controls the autonomous nervous system, (breathing, heartbeat, blinking-things we do without thinking) also stores our beliefs. We program beliefs into our subconscious mind in five ways:

  1. Through repetition
  2. Through listening to authority figures
  3. Through listening to our peers
  4. During times of high emotion
  5. During altered states of mind

If you believe, or have been programmed to believe, that a doctor or a medication can harm or hurt you, your powerful subconscious mind tweaks the automatic processes of your body to make it so.

Advertisers use the power of repetition to program beliefs into your subconscious mind. Take for instance the great Dristan campaign. In the early 60's, Dristan was simply a modest selling cold and headache medicine. Then one day, a New York City advertiser injected the sinus headache and named a series of symptoms to go along with it. After a fantastic advertising campaign that let people all over America know about this new disease, people began experiencing this sinus headache and sales of Dristan went through the roof. What we expect often tends to realized.

Consider how for many of us, going to the doctor brings about a heightened emotional state, and how we often see them as authority figures. If you believe that a pill, given to you by a doctor when you are in a highly emotional state will cure you, it often does, even if it is only made of sugar. This is the power of subconscious beliefs at work.

This placebo effect is not limited to just medication. Trials in the 1950's and 1990's show that 'fake' surgeries are just as effective as real ones. What ??? Yes, Dr.'s performed fake operations on half of their patients in both heart and knee surgeries (they simply made incisions and stitched the patients back up without any surgery taking place) and the patients with the 'fake' surgeries reported just as much relief as the people who actually had the procedure done.

The power of your mind to heal your body is absolutely fantastic. We are only beginning to tap into the vast healing knowledge that comes from within and understand this mind / body connection. Take care in what information you choose to believe about your health and well-being. Think positively about your out in medical situations and allow your power of belief to help you heal.
