Graduated Cylinders, Pipettes, Burettes – Know The Difference

Some people are not really aware of the different uses of glassware in chemistry. Knowing about the different varieties of glassware can help you in selecting which is right for your situation. So, if you’re thinking on doing any chemistry work it is important to be able to tell the differences between measuring cylinders, burettes, and measuring cylinders.

Graduated cylinders are great for the measurement of bulk volumes. They have many advantages compared to burettes and pipettes. Burettes allow for dispensing larger volumes than a pipette. The purpose of measuring cylinders is not the dispensing of liquids but they can contain a larger volume than the aforementioned two. They are designed to indicate exactly how much liquid the cylinder contains. This is why they are calibrated from the bottom to the top. A burette, on the other hand, is designed to display how much liquid it is dispensing. This is why it is calibrated from top to bottom. Pipettes can only measure a very specific volume, whereas graduated cylinders and burettes are capable of measuring any volume up to their maximum capacity.

A negative aspect of pipettes is that due to their calibration they are read from top to bottom. The fact that they are read from top to bottom makes them slightly more susceptible to human error. This is why it is a good idea to be aware of what glassware you’re using and pick the glassware that best suits your need. If you’re having trouble using burettes you can use a graduated cylinder in order to more easily read the amount of liquid being measured. The marks on the cylinder are also generally considered easier to read.

There are a variety of different sizes of graduated cylinders. The most typical sizes are 10ml, 25ml, 100ml, 500ml, and all the way up to 2 liters. Measuring cylinders are sometimes used in order to handle the volume of liquid required. If accuracy is what you’re after you should use a measuring cylinder. So, in any case that you can a graduated cylinder is generally regarded as more desirable, but if the situation doesn’t call for the most extreme of accuracy, or if other means may be suitable you can always use a pipette or burette.

Knowing the difference in glassware is important for anyone that intends to study in the field. Everyone from students to professionals needs to make sure that they’re familiar in order to be successful. This is why chemistry classes test their students in the differences between all of the equipment early on in their studies because it is vital information that is important to have memorized.

Factors to Take Into Consideration When Selecting a Fertility Clinic

An important aspect when opting to go in for a fertility treatment is finding the right clinic to undertake the procedure. A good fertility clinic provides a proficient staff and qualified doctors who carry out the operation. Most couples rightly base their judgment of a desirable clinic on the price rates and the geographical position of the clinic. This is a sensible measure as there are significant costs involved in fertility treatments. It is also worthwhile to take into consideration certain other points when deciding on a fertility clinic:

Variety of Treatments On Offer

The range of infertility solutions varies from clinic to clinic. While it is a rather obvious point, it is an imperative one. It would be a waste of time to enter a fertility clinic only to find that the treatment that you are in need of is not included. You can find out about the types of treatment carried out at the specific clinic and other notable details such as treatment duration, costs, number of visits etc. when making an appointment at the given clinic. It is not a prerequisite for one to book a spot at the clinic when setting up an appointment; therefore it makes sense to find out the relevant details. In some cases, the presence of a female specialist makes for a more comfortable treatment. If you are interested in such an option, then inquire about the same at this time.

Time Period of the Treatment

As the demand for fertility solutions far outweighs the available specialists and facilities, you are likely to encounter a wait-list when stepping into a fertility center. You should have a fair understanding of the duration of the waiting period and the complete process as it will assist in having a smoother overall experience.

The Clinic's Ambiance

At the first visit to the clinic, another task that should be undertaken is a tour guide of the facilities in order to get acquainted with the amenities. A couple that is undergoing a fertility operation faces an emotionally taxing time. Here, importance needs to be given to developing the right rapport with the specialists and staff and being at ease with the clinic settings as an unfavorable situation is bound to aggravate elements which the couple finds to be aggravating.

Undergoing an infertility treatment is a lengthy and expensive procedure, therefore you should take care to find about these various details. European fertility clinics are believed to be the most developed ones and they are worth thinking about if you are interested in going abroad for treatment.

Specific Genetic Disorders Trigger Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia, which is often also referred to as “the cancer of mental illness,” is a dreaded mental condition. It is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States.

Though it can strike at any age, approximately 75 percent people get afflicted by schizophrenia are aged between 16 and 30 – male 16-25 and female 25-30. While the average age of onset of schizophrenia in men is 18, in women it is 25.

Researches have shown that 25 percent schizophrenia patients recover completely, 25 percent have symptoms that do not improve over time and the rest 50 percent patients improve over a period of 10 years.

Earlier studies have revealed that schizophrenia is not one disease, but a collection of different mental disorders. Hence, knowing the signs and symptoms of schizophrenia is crucial to the treatment because early intervention holds the key to a long-term recovery.

Basic signs of schizophrenia

Living with schizophrenia is not easy, be it for the patient or others living around. A schizophrenia patient will most likely exhibit these signs:

  • Becoming a recluse
  • Hostility or suspiciousness
  • Lackadaisical or careless in maintaining personal hygiene
  • Staid but expressionless gaze
  • Inability to cry or express joy
  • Bizarre laughter or crying
  • Depression
  • Sleeplessness or oversleeping
  • Odd or irrational statements
  • Forgetful, unable to concentrate
  • Hyper to criticism
  • Strange usage of words or way of speaking

When a family member exhibits any of the above symptoms, it is advisable to consult a treatment center at the earliest.

A recent study by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri claims that schizophrenia comprises eight distinct genetic disorders, all of which exhibit their own specific symptoms. The researchers claim that their findings would immensely help in diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

The authors say that genetics play a huge role in determining the course of the disorder in a particular patient. People with relatives suffering from schizophrenia are somewhat predisposed to get the disease. Approximately 1 percent of the population in the U.S. has schizophrenia, but 10 percent of such patients have a first-degree relative with the disorder, which is a clear indication of a genetic predisposition to get the disease.

Genes linked to schizophrenia identified

Another study conducted by researchers at the Cardiff University School of Medicine in the U.K., to unravel the genes associated with schizophrenia, found as many as 83 new genes that trigger the onset of the disease in an individual. This 2014 study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, analyzed the genomes of 4,200 schizophrenia patients and 3,800 people without the disorder.

The researchers concluded that there are specific gene clusters linked with eight different types of schizophrenia all of which exhibit recognizable symptoms. For instance, they discovered a gene cluster which precipitates 95 percent risk of schizophrenia and is related to hallucinations or delusions.

Another important revelation by this team of experts is that the genes “work in concert” to disrupt brain structure and function, causing schizophrenia. Individual genes linked to schizophrenia are unable to wield enough influence and it is the cluster of genes which causes the disorder. Their findings could lay the foundation for a more comprehensive and successful execution of treatment programs in the future.

Analysis of the True Meaning of Magnolia

Warning: This article is an analysis of the movie Magnolia and contains many spoilers.

Everyone who has watched the much-praised film “Magnolia” undoubtedly walked out of the theater with maybe a feeling of awe, but most likely an overwhelming confusion over its ending, especially the scene with the shower of frogs.

A key aspect to interpreting the true meaning of this film lies in its many references of Exodus 8:2 from the bible. The most obvious reference was in the scene right before the start of the Quiz show. A woman is seen holding a sign that clearly has the words “Exodus 8:2” written on it, but is promptly escorted out of the audience by security.

Below are other examples of references to the numbers 8 and 2 in the movie, as listed in the trivia section of imdb.com

o weather forecast: 82% chance of rain

o a gambler needs a 2 in blackjack but gets an 8

o the coil of rope when the boy commits suicide

o the first temperature reading

o the movie poster at the bus stop on Magnolia Blvd

o the placard on the hanged convicts

o Jim Kurring’s box number at the date hotline

o Sydney Barringer’s mother and father’s apartment number is 682

o the forensic science convention starts at 8:20

o Delmer Darion flips over a stack of cards to reveal the 8 through 2 of diamonds

o right after Jim Kurring sees Donnie Smith climbing up the building, you can see a flash of a sign on the side of the road that says “Exodus 8:2″ (it’s visible again when the frogs fall and hit Kurring’s car)

o the number on the firefighter’s plane.

o in Marcy’s mugshots, her criminal record number is 82082082082

o in the bar scene there is a chalkboard with two teams, the frog and the clouds, the score is 8 to 2

o spray painted on the cement as graffiti next to the boy.

o member of the game show crowd holds a placard with Exodus 8:2 written on it

o the kids were two days away from entering their eighth week as champions.

o Quiz Kid Donnie Smith won his 100 000 dollars on 28 April 1968

o The first two numbers of the Seduce and Destroy Hotline (1-877-TAME-HER) are 82.

o one of the hanged men has the 82 on his clothes

o Jim says he gets off work at 8:00, and Claudia suggests they meet 2 hours later for a date

And here is Exodus 8:2 –

And the Lord spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs.

Another important piece of the puzzle comes from Dixon, the young boy who raps to Jim after his discovery of the murders. The following is an excerpt from Dixon’s rap:

Check that ego, come off it, I’m the Prophet,

You’re living to get older with a chip on your shoulder.

He’s running from the devil, but the debt is always gaining,

When the sunshine don’t work, the good Lord bring the rain in.

Dixon calls himself the “Prophet” but he could be interpreted an extension of god. He takes Jim’s gun after it was lost, yet during the frog shower, the gun falls from the sky along with the frogs – a sign that the boy had some control over the events.

The second and third lines of the rap are warning Jim that he’s living to move higher (“to get older”) yet there is something burdening him. Dixon is telling Jim that what he is doing isn’t right and warning him to stop. However, Jim doesn’t listen to the rapper just like how the Pharaoh of Egypt did not listen to Moses. This message is not only meant for Jim, but it also symbolizes the wrongness in the lives of all the other characters. The last line warns that if God is ignored, he will bring on the rain.

An important key note is that the characters all admit their wrongs but can’t seem to get past them. Claudia, for example, is addicted to cocaine but can do nothing to stop, Linda feels terrible guilt for cheating on Earl and attempts to take her name off his will but can’t, and even Earl uses his final breaths to admit his mistreatment of his son and wife and pleads for forgiveness from Frank but he does not receive one.

The rain of frogs signifies God’s wake-up call to everyone. The rain of frogs – the extremely strange, almost absurd situation – was a way for God to tell everyone that they have done wrong and sinned. However, the shower is his message that he is always watching over the world and can intervene to help when help is needed. After the rain of frogs, the characters appear to either make peace with their problems and have succeeded or, in the example of Jimmy Gator’s death, failed. This shows that although god is there to help, not everything always works out perfectly and there are always the ones who are punished instead of saved.

Please note that this is not an official interpretation and the scene of the frog shower is among the most debated topic in the movie world. Accept my interpretation at your own discretion and form your own opinions on the matter, which is most likely what the writer P. T. Anderson had intended.

Type 2 Diabetes – Does Telemedicine Have a Place In Treating Diabetes?

Investigators at the University Hospital in Tours and several other research institutions in France have determined telemedicine is useful in dealing with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Their work was reported on in August 2018 in the Telemedicine Journal and E-Health.

The investigators combined 42 trials of the technique and analyzed them as if they were one large study with 6,170 participants…

  • a total of 34 studies used devices for telemonitoring blood sugar levels while the other
  • 8 used teleconsultation.

The participants using telemedicine experienced a more significant reduction in their HbA1c levels than those who were treated with the usual care, and the difference was more significant in those with Type 2 diabetes than those with Type 1 diabetes. Those aged between 41 and 50 years showed more significant improvement than the younger participants, and telemedicine programs lasting over six months reduced HbA1c levels further than shorter programs.

Another investigation, reported on in January 2018 in the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare, showed telemedicine to be effective at preventing low blood sugar levels as well. Researchers at Huzhou University and several other research institutions in China combined 14 studies in their analysis. They found telemedicine reduced the risk of low blood sugar by an average of 58 percent in 1324 diabetic participants.

Obesity is a concern for those with Type 2 diabetes and Gestational diabetes. According to an article published in the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare in January of 2018, scientists at the National Yang-Ming University Hospital in Yilan and other research institutions in Taiwan found telemedicine helpful for the control of the body mass index (BMI). A total of 25 trials that included 6253 individuals were involved. Telemedicine was more effective than the usual care alone in reducing the BMI in those treated for…

  • obesity alone,
  • being overweight,
  • having diabetes, or
  • high blood pressure.

Continuing their care for at least six months and follow-up care afterward, was also helpful

Telemedicine also has its place in Gestational or pregnancy-related diabetes. In August of 2018, the journal Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice reported on a study performed at the University of Melbourne and some other research facilities in Australia. A total of 95 pregnant women who had been diagnosed with Gestational diabetes were included…

  • 61 received telemedical care as well as the usual care, while
  • 34 received general attention only.

The cost of care for both groups cost the same amount. Those receiving the telemedical care needed fewer changes to their insulin dosage and achieved their targeted HbA1c levels in an average of 4.3 weeks, while the women receiving the usual care reached their goals after an average of 7.6 weeks.

Mouth Breathing and Dental Health

Breathing is something that we do automatically to stay alive and so most of us do not think twice about it. It is perfectly natural to breathe through the mouth at certain terms such as when running or lifting heavy objects, however if breathing occurs through the mouth habitually then it can lead to many health problems. These problems can be particularly severe for children as mouth breathing can affect the long term development of the face and jaw.

So Why Breathe Through the Mouth?

Normal breathing is when we breathe through the nose with the mouth closed. The most obvious reason for someone to be a mouth breather is that they cannot get enough air through the nose. Common reasons for blocked nasal passages include:

  • Allergies – which can cause polyps or swelling of the nasal lining
  • Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Respiratory infections – cold or flu

Signs that may indicate nasal breathing problems or airway obstruction are:

  • Snoring, sleep apnoea
  • Frequent upper airway infections
  • Sounding ‘stuffy’ during the day/night
  • Dark circles under the eyes

Effects on Teeth, Jaw and Posture

As mentioned before, mouth breathing can lead to many health problems, in particular dental health problems. When we breathe through the mouth, there is loss of saliva and dryness of the mouth and this can increase the risk of tooth decay and inflammation of the gums.

Also, mouth breathing can lead to alterations in the jaw and facial growth. The normal resting position of the tongue is up against the roof of the mouth to compensate the forces of the cheeks, however when a person breathes through the mouth, the tongue drops. This leads to the narrowing of the upper jaw and elongation of the lower jaw, resulting in the long, narrow face shape, typically known as ‘long face syndrome’. Due to the narrowing of the jaws, crowding of the teeth, overbite problems and malocclusion can be seen.

Adjustment in head posture is another effect that can result. Chronic mouth breathers tend to tilt the head backwards and lean the head forward in front of the shoulders to keep the airway open. This enables them to breathe better, however can have lead to long term problems of the neck and back.

Treatment

Treatment of mouth breathing depends upon the underlying cause. This requires a multidisciplinary approach where your dentist, GP, ear-nose-throat specialist (ENT) and sleep physician may be involved in determining the treatment needed. Treatment may include prescription of certain medicines, surgery and myofunctional therapy and breathing exercises.

Airway obstruction is a common cause of mouth breathing and sometimes a full assessment by an ENT is needed to decide the treatment of the obstruction. Often certain medicines can be prescribed to increase nasal airflow and reduce obstructions like swelling of the nasal lining and polyps. For more complicated blockages such as enlarged tonsils or adenoids, surgery may be necessary to remove them.

Sometimes even after removal of the airway obstruction, mouth breathing is still present as it has become habitual. If this is the case, myofuntional therapy along with specific breathing and muscle exercises can help in establishing nasal breathing. Exercises that aim at strengthening the facial muscles along with specific oral appliances encourage nasal breathing and therefore can aid in the proper growth and facial development. This is imperative in young children as they are still in their growing stages.

Your Dentist Can Help

Mouth breathing is a serious problem that can impact on general and dental health. Our role as a dental practitioner is to identify and treat mouth breathing early, especially in children, and to refer to appropriate specialists if needed. The earlier we address this condition, the more likely we can reverse the effects. This means a healthier life, a more natural face and profile and a beautiful, healthy smile.

Hay Fever and Mowing Grass – Some Solutions

Do you have hay fever symptoms when you’re mowing the lawn?

If you’re in doubt, an allergy to grass (and other) pollens can result in one or more of the following:

  • red, sore and runny eyes
  • a blocked nose and/or sneezing
  • skin rashes and blotches plus a general ‘itchiness’
  • a blocked and catarrh-ridden throat
  • a tickly cough perhaps combined with wheeziness
  • sinus headaches
  • a general feeling of malaise.

Of course, if you’re suffering any such symptoms, it would always be sensible to get a doctor to check your assumptions about hay fever as a cause. Assuming it is though, what can you do about it?

Don’t Ignore It

Hay fever was once laughed-off by many, including some heath care professionals, as being a trivial thing or ‘in the mind’.

In today’s more enlightened times, it’s recognised to be a potentially major problem that can seriously reduce sufferers’ effectiveness in work or when doing jobs around the house.

There are some medications you can take to help and your doctor will discuss those with you including the traditional anti-histamines, although other treatments are also possible. They may also advise taking some tests to try and specifically identify just what type of pollen or dust you’re allergic to.

Precautions

In some cases, those working with agricultural machinery and lawnmowers might wish to consider a few additional tips that may help.

  • Depending upon your specific allergy, research which times of the day offer the best working conditions. Some pollens are far more active in the early morning and others in the late evening etc. Avoid those times!
  • If the main effects on you are respiratory and throat-related, consider using a mask. Make sure it’s rated for pollen elimination.
  • If you’re mainly affected in the eyes, think about goggles but you’ll need special varieties that don’t have unfiltered ventilation holes or you’ll be wasting your time.
  • Consider using overalls and ‘covering up’ if the worst effects are skin-related. There are also some barrier creams that can be effective.
  • Remember that some allergies commonly called “hay fever” are nothing to do with pollen at all. Your allergies might be due to, say, harvest dust or just the dust thrown up when driving around on the land. Another culprit is often household dust, the largest component of which is usually dead human skin cells! If you’re really allergic to harvest dust and related issues, then you’ll need to take some of the above steps or also look at working in a vehicle with a cab providing filtered air
  • When you’ve finished your cutting, make sure you undress outside the house and try and shower quickly once inside. There’s little point keeping lots of the pollen on your overalls and mask if you then take it all into your home at the end of the day, shaking it about as you move around!

Most employers are sympathetic to employees who suffer from hay fever, so if you need anything to help you get through the day and perform adequately, let them know.

If it’s a personal rather than a work related issue, then you might just have to ask your spouse, kids or a well-disposed neighbour to lend a hand in the peak allergy season!

For Botox & Dermal Fillers, Always Visit A Renowned Clinic

There’s isn’t much awareness about cosmetic surgery in some parts of the world. Lack of knowledge makes it difficult for people to figure out where to go for the cosmetic treatment. You have to go some place that is safe, and where there’s an experienced expert, who should have a decent info about all the aspects of cosmetic surgery. Luckily, there are many spots that offer these treatments, and all you need to do is choose the best in the business.

Some people have confusion about whether they should go to a cosmetic surgeon or beauticians. Well, it’s strongly recommended that cosmetic surgeons who have training in these treatments, and who use renowned and safe products should perform these cosmetic procedures, especially any injectable treatments.

You need to do proper research and find out all the information about the clinic where you’re planning to get your cosmetic treatment. There are many ways to check the info like search online, read testimonials, or word of mouth.

Here are a few things that you need to do:

  • Find out the basic info about the qualifications of your cosmetic surgeon.
  • Don’t forget to ensure that the place you’re visiting to have treatment is properly clean and sanitized.
  • Stay away from fake surgeons, and also avoid fake promises or discounts offered by quack-doctors.
  • Remember, cheap things are not always good. You’ll be getting chemicals injected into your body, so better make a wise decision while choosing a surgeon.
  • To see what results they achieve, check out their before and after photos.

When it comes to removing wrinkles, fine lines, crow’s feet, and other signs of ageing, then Botox treatment is the most preferred treatment, and the second choice of most women is dermal fillers.

Botox

Botox treatment works the wrinkles and fine lines that show up on the facial area because of years of repetitive facial movements that kind of engrave them in the face. Individuals, especially women think that Botox surgery will bring about a solidified, plastic looking face, yet that’s not the case. Such situation might occur, if too much of the chemical is infused by an inexperienced doctor.

Remember, if the proper amount of Botox gets injected, then it will smooth out the wrinkles and fine lines, and give you natural facial expressions. So, visiting and experienced and qualified surgeon for your botox surgery is quite important.

Dermal Fillers

This treatment is widely used to provide volume and fullness to the cheeks, jaw line, under the eyes, and to plump up the lips. Many people are afraid that they might get puffy faces and trout pouts, if the excess filler is infused. However, this fear will go away by simply visiting the best cosmetic surgeon who can deliver positive outcomes easily.

Mesothelioma Symptoms: An Overview

Malignant mesotheliomas are rare cancers that form in the tissues lining the lungs (pleura), abdomen (peritoneum) or heart (pericardium). Pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs, is the most common, accounting for about 75 percent of all malignant mesotheliomas. Between ten and twenty percent of all malignant mesotheliomas are peritoneal mesotheliomas. Pericardial mesotheliomas are extremely rare. A history of exposure to asbestos is found in most individuals with mesothelioma. The time from exposure to onset of cancer may be as long as thirty years; this is why most people with malignant mesothelioma are between 50 and 70 years old.

Many symptoms of malignant mesothelioma are non-specific, and are also seen in a number of other chest and abdominal conditions. This, combined with the lack of an accurate history of asbestos exposure in some patients, may considerably delay diagnosis. The majority of people with mesothelioma only have symptoms during the two to three months before they are diagnosed. About one quarter of all people with malignant mesothelioma have symptoms for about six months before diagnosis.

Once symptoms are present, they may depend on the location of the primary cancer. In general, symptoms become more pronounced with more advanced disease. With pleural mesothelioma, common symptoms are difficulty breathing, cough, pain in the chest or under the ribcage, coughing up blood, hoarseness, and the collection of fluid or pleural effusion in the pleural cavity. The face and arms may swell up. Many of these symptoms and signs are also seen with lung cancer.

With peritoneal mesothelioma, symptoms may include a lump or swelling in the abdomen, abdominal pain, fluid in the abdomen, constipation due to bowel obstruction, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Patients suffering from pericardial mesothelioma may experience chest pain, breathlessness and palpitations. Some symptoms of malignant mesothelioma are common to many cancers. These include unexplained weight loss, fever and fatigue.

Top 3 Best Abs Workouts

Everyone wants to get six pack abs, but you have to put in the work. The best abs workouts will give you the best results for a defined, strong core. These abs workouts can be done at home without special equipment so you can squeeze them in during your normal day. Keep in mind that abs workouts will not get rid of your belly fat so you want to do these with cardio and diet for the best results.

Bring your naval in towards your spine and lift your shoulders off the ground and perform the crunch. Remember to keep control over your motions, slowly crunch up and release down, and most importantly breathe.

Repeat this exercise 10-15 times for 2-3 reps.

Feel the burn? Do these abs workouts and you’ll get six pack abs in no time. Keep in mind a few things while working out. Give your abs a chance to recover and do these abs workouts every other day. Combine this with cardio to lose the excess belly fat that covers your abs. Eat a healthy diet high in protein and low in carbs while drinking plenty of water. These are great moves that will get you results.

Hypertension – The Silent Killer

The other day I had a bit of a scare. Don’t get me wrong, what I am going to relate to you is not an act of trying to gain sympathy but one of warning. This is how the story goes.

I went to the local pharmacy to refill my diabetes medication (I’m type 2). So while waiting for it to be filled I was looking around and saw one one of those blood pressure machines. You know the one, it has a seat and you put your arm into a device that looks like a clamp. Well for a lark I decided to sit down and try it to pass the time. So I put my arm in and pressed start, soon I felt the air bladder fill and felt the crunch and pressure of the machine working. After what seemed like 30 seconds the machine stopped and the results popped up on the screen. Let’s just say I was stunned by the results. I tried the test again and the results came back virtually the same. I tried a third time and once again same results. Panic started to creep in and I said to myself I feel fine there’s nothing wrong with me, the machine must be on the fritz.

So I decided to get some piece of mind and went to the pharmacist and asked if the machine was working OK. She replied that it was as far as she knew, but sometimes kids come in and play around and it goes out of whack. I asked her if she could test it, to see if it was OK. She had a puzzled look on her face and said sure and stopped filling an order and came out. I’m not sure if that was due to the look of concern on my face or the whimper in my voice. When she tested it she advised me the machine recorded her exact blood pressure, so it should be fine. She sat me down and got me set up in the optimal position to record the best possible outcome. Well let’s just say that did not happen.

She hit the start button, the air bladder filled, the gadgets inside whirred, hummed and beeped and out came the results. Ahhh… the stunned look on her face said it all. It was not good news. She did the test a couple of more times to be sure, it seems just to check her vision, to see if she saw it right. Unfortunately she saw right. She gently helped me up and asked if I felt alright. I replied with a silly grin on my face, I feel fine why?

The pharmacist continued to hold onto my arm and steered me to the medical clinic that was connected to the pharmacy. She told me to take slow careful steps and held onto me. (at this point I felt like a 90 year old man and walked it). When we got to the clinic we walked up to the registration desk and she walked behind it and whispered in the clerk’s ear, who’s eyes widened and nodded so vigorously nearly causing her glasses to slip off. Alas… another bad sign.

At this time the clinic was full of people and I anticipated at least an hours wait. Imagine my surprise when my name was called next. Another bad sign. As I walked through some of those in waiting room (some of whom were glaring with hostility). All I could do was sheepishly grin and shrug my shoulders in way of apology. The clinic nurse took me to the back and wrote down my history and said the doctor would see me shortly. So I waited and did what everyone does in the room. I read those medical posters on the wall, you know of the ear, body and ads for vaccinations. When I got bored of that I checked out the cupboards. Oh come on now, like you guys have never done that before out of curiosity, checking to see what free samples the Doctor had.

A few minutes later the doctor showed up and asked me what was the problem. I told him what had occurred. So in a nonchalant and bored attitude (you know how doctors are) he started to take my blood pressure. He put on the bladder started to pump looked at the gauge, looked down at the bladder and then looked at the gauge again with a stunned look on his face. He started to mumble to himself and stared at the gauge (did I mention he kept looking at the gauge). He shook his head and asked me to follow him to a next room (again not a good sign) and tested again. That same look crept onto his face. He asked if I didn’t have a migraine, blurred vision or nausea. I replied proudly, “Nope Doc feel as healthy as a horse”. He sighed, looked at me and said that he could not believe that I was not feeling any effects let alone walking. He muttered thank god you came in and put his arm around my shoulder. NOW… that really is not a good sign!

To make a long story short or at least shorter, I was diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) for those who haven’t figured it out yet. My words of wisdom to you today especially if your a diabetic. When you see those machines at the pharmacy or your local Wal-Mart, test yourself and do it often you may be surprised by the results and it could save your life. They do not call high blood pressure the silent killer for nothing.

Oh yeah, you are probably wondering what those numbers were that sent everyone into a panic, well I will share them with you. Remember, optimal readings are around 130/80. At the pharmacy – 223/142, 199/142, 243/142. At the Doctor’s office – 200/140 (last reading).

7 Types Of Fertility Treatments That Can Help You

The 7 treatments can be divided into two areas, complementary or alternative treatments and conventional treatments. Let's first look at complementary treatments, they tend to be less invasive and less costly.

1. Diet and Nutrition – you may already be a firm believer in the benefits of maintaining a healthy diet or be skeptical as to how the food you eat can help your fertility. Either way, there is enough evidence to suggest that your diet may need tweaking to prepare yourself for pregnancy and carry a baby to full term. Sperm and egg production, fertilization and implantation and growing a baby for nine months all require an abundance of nutrients.

Couples who had problems conceiving have become pregnant by changing their diet and lifestyle alone. A three-year study of 367 infertile couples showed that after making the necessary dietary changes, 86% became pregnant naturally. Even if your infertility has been diagnosed as requiring conventional treatment research has shown that a healthy diet will reduce the risk of miscarriage and assist you in carrying a baby to full term.

2. Reflexology – involves working with the hands and feet to enable the body to heal itself. Following illness, stress injury or disease the body is in a state of imbalance, and vital energy pathways become blocked preventing the body from functioning properly. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and encourage healing. It can help facts that play a part in preventing conception such as blocked fallopian tubes, chlamydia and endometriosis.

3. Acupuncture – has helped to regulate menstrual cycles, to improve sperm health and helped couples conceive healthy babies. How I hear you say? The Chinese believe that the mind and body are inextricably linked. Any imbalance in the flow of energy around the body directly affects its functioning. For example, a person who worries excessively may suffer from irritable bowel syndrome due to increased mental activity affecting the functioning of the digestive system. Acupuncture treatment focuses on raising the while person and increasing a persons overall well being. It can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs, stabilize hormone levels and increase ovarian function.

The evidence: A study in Germany shown acupuncture improved the number and quality of sperm in men who suffered low sperm counts. Women with irregular cycles regulated their hormones. In clinical studies acupuncture helped normalize levels of FSH, LH and oestradiol in older women increasing the chance of a natural pregnancy.

4. Herbal medicine – uses the healing power of plants, flowers, trees and herbs to treat an illness or condition. Many herbs are in common use, such as ginger, which is taken to avoid sickness and nausea. Garlic which helps to reduce cholesterol levels, Gingkbo biloba which helps improve depression and milk thistle which detoxifies and cleanses the liver.
Herbal medicine can correct hormonal imbalances and increase the production of the female hormones and production of sperm. The skill of the herbalist lies in knowing the properties of each herb and being able to mix a remedy specifically tailored to each person need.

5. Hypnotherapy – focuses on the mind body connection. The practice of hypnosis dates from primitive times when healers would encourage people to cure themselves by planting suggestions of health and well being during a trance like state. Hypnotherapy is often used to treat phobias and its application to the field of infertility is relatively new. So how does it work?

A good example of how the mind and body are linked is in states of stress. Our mind buses itself with thinking about the problem, which the body shows the physical signs of stress like a raised heart rate, raised blood pressure and headache. Hypnotherapy asserts that every thought or sensation experienced in the mind shows itself in a physical change. The reproductive system is no exception. Who can benefit? If you are confused about motherhood, panicking you are too old, ambivalent towards your partner, fear of giving birth, guilty about an abortion hypnotherapy may help address the psychological barriers you have.

6. Ovulation induction – is a form of assisted reproductive technique (ART) in which there is medial intervention in trying to conceive a baby. It may be the first assisted treatment you try before progressing onto intrauterine insemination (IUI) ad in vitro fertilization (IVF). 30% of infertility in women is due to ovulation disorders. Fertility drugs which help women achieve ovulation have proven successful. The drugs are inexpensive and can be taken over a 3-6 month period. They work by fooling the body into thinking oestrogen levels are low. The brain picks up the signal and responds by increasing the production of FSH and LH, which then stimulate ovulation to occur. 80% of women using these drugs will ovulate and 50% may conceive.

7. IVF – in vitro fertilization is the most popular method of assisted conception and involves fertilizing a woman's eggs outside her body under controlled laboratory condition and replacing the embryos back into the uterus. IVF was initially designed for women with damaged fallopian tubes but is now frequently used for couples with low sperm counts, ovulatory disorders, endometriosis and unexplained infertility. Success rates vary from clinic to clinic, ranging from 10% to 58%. The average success rate is 25%. I always advise a couple to do thorough research before choosing their fertility clinic – it is one of the most important decision you can make!

Deciding which fertility treatment to undertake is a personal choice. Some couples prefer to start with the less invasive options first before advancing to assisted conception. Others may prefer to fast track to IVF straightaway. Either way do your research, work with your doctor and find the best treatment for you.

The Importance of Dental Cleanings

Having a great set of teeth starts at home and getting a healthy set of teeth starts at the dental office. You may not be aware, but your dental hygiene rituals may be poorly facilitated. And what about dental insurance? Plan holders are covered for at least $ 1,000 a year. Why not use the unspent amount on an appointment with the dentist that may just take a few hours of your time?

Regular dental cleansings are not a luxury; in fact, getting them is an underrated necessity that a lot of people find as a waste of time. But the benefits of getting professional cleaning service from dentists may save you from more dental conditions than you could possibly think of.

Dental cleanings also provide a more thorough way for the dentist to examine the present condition of your teeth and to treat infections at an early pace. Having dental cleansings done on a regular basis will make it easier for the dentist to benchmark improvements on your teeth. Paired with a good oral hygiene, dental cleansings will get you started on a worry-free work life.

What other specific benefits do dental cleanings give?

1.) A Hands-down "Thorough" Clean – While most people would think that the dentist only performances basic cleaning during the treatment, there's a lot more to it than that. Once detected for any tartar or plaque accumulation, the dentist's outright duty is to perform "scaling" (the removal of dental tartar from the surface of the teeth) and "planning" (the smoothing of the surface of the root of the teeth). These two procedures along can save you from gingivitis and mild forms of periodontitis.

Deep dental cleaning makes sure that the teeth, as well as the alveolar bone and the gums are healthy and if needed, become treated for gingival problems. On some occasions, the dental cleaning process may take a while longer.

A thorough clean means having:

  • White and healthy teeth
  • Healthy gums
  • A better bite after going to the dentist

A thorough clean means NOT having or being FREE from:

  • Halitosis (bad breath) – obviously one of the major turn-offs and possibly a link to gingivitis and other tooth diseases
  • Tooth abscess – accumulated pus in the gums
  • Leukoplakia – is a white or gray patch on the tongue, which can be an early sign of oral cancer / HIV
  • Canker sores – are small mouth ulcers that cause disruption to both eating and talking habits.
  • Tooth decay – a soft, decayed area of the tooth
  • Pericoronitis – inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding an erupting tooth.
  • Thrush – a mouth infection caused by fungus

2.) To help you get started on a PROPER oral hygiene – people usually think that brushing is enough. But we all have different sets of teeth, and they require different levels and kinds of maintenance.

For people with braces, the dentist can recommend additional cleaning methods to fully clean the teeth and gums. People with dental infections are also subject to different modes of oral hygiene. For people with oral cancer, getting regular dental cleansings and checksups are crucial to avert any potential worsening of the infection.

Proper oral hygiene also does not limit itself to brushing and flossing the teeth and using mouthwash. Sometimes it's the food and liquids that we ingest that cause undiagnosed dental conditions. When at the office, consult your dentist on the proper types of food and drinks that you should eat and drink and the stuff that you should avoid.

Asking questions is free and could save a couple hundred dollars in dental bills by getting early treatment for your detrimental habits which could lead to dental complication.

Which to Use – Antibacterial Wipes Or Disinfectant Wipes?

Many people are not aware of the differences between products with antibacterial properties and those that are disinfectants. It is an important distinction as the use of wet wipes, gels and sanitizing hand wipes has exploded in recent years. The EPA and Center for Disease Control have both recommended the use of these products to control the spread of viruses and reduce the rate of bacterial infections. However, it is important to know the distinctions.

Generally, antibacterial wipes are used on hands to kill bacteria and prevent its transmission. Liquid hand sanitizers will kill these germs as well, but will not remove traces of food, dirt and grime. Gels still have their place as these small bottles can be placed just about anywhere and they are a very cost-effective method of controlling the transmission of disease. The preponderance of nut allergies today demands that schools rely upon antibacterial wipes after meals and snacks. It is preferred that hand wipes are rated “Non Hazardous” and contain a hand protecting oil.

It is a common misconception that dishwashing liquids also claiming to be antibacterial hand soaps will be effective on household surfaces such as cutting boards, appliance handles, and counter tops. The cleaning process for hands versus equipment differs significantly. With hands, we tend to scrub and rub our hands together, which greatly aids the cleaning process. With equipment, we tend to simply wipe it off. Hence, a more effective method is to use disinfectant wipes on surfaces.

Disinfecting wipes by contrast are generally used on shared office machines, chairs, gymnasium equipment, shopping carts or in the kitchen and bathrooms. They are effective on many viruses as well as bacteria. Often alcohol is the active ingredient in disinfectants. However, alcohol is highly flammable and evaporates quickly. You must virtually immerse the object to obtain effective disinfection. Chlorine bleach is another option, but it is quite caustic to the skin, lungs and eyes. And, mistakenly combining it with ammonia or any other acid such as vinegar results in the production of a noxious gas. Since there is ammonia in urine, use around pets and in bathrooms can be dangerous. Not to mention that both are quite malodorous. Hence, water-based synthetic phenolic compounds are greatly preferred.

Many wonder whether or not homemade concoctions are effective. Studies have demonstrated that most of these have little or no disinfectant properties. When dealing with serious contagions such as hepatitis, influenza, salmonella, etc, you must use the most effective yet safe substance and methods available. Thoroughly washing and drying hands and surfaces along with the use of antibacterial wipes and disinfecting wipes is the most effective prevention you will find.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also advises that since about 20% of the U.S. population either attends school or works in one, like any other facility with many people in close contact they are prime places for the transmission of disease. Some viruses and bacteria will remain alive on doorknobs, cafeteria tables and desks for two hours or longer. Since hand washing sinks are impractical to locate everywhere they might be used, the obvious solution is to locate hand wipes and disinfectant wipes throughout schools, hospitals, prisons, or anywhere else where large numbers of people gather.
