How To Laminate Using A Heated Roll Laminating Machine

A laminating machine is one of the most common office appliances that we have in our offices. It is commonly used for laminating which is a process by which a piece of document is encased between two laminating films for protection against any physical damage like water or creasing. Many people do not understand how the machine works and in this article, we focus on how it works and how to operate one in case you come across it in an office somewhere.

There are different types of this laminating machines based on how they operate and their sizes. There are those that use heated rollers to bind together the laminating films while others will just pressure and force to bind them together. On the other hand, their sizes are determined by the size of laminating film they can hold and the more common is the A4 sized laminating machines.

How to laminate using a heated roll machine

· Follow the given guidelines by the manufacturer on how to load the laminating films into the machine, commonly they are two.

· After loading the laminating films preheat the rollers by turning the machine on using the power button. There are different levels of preheating and each machine comes with directions on how long this duration lasts. Most machines have light signals that indicate when the machine is on when it is preheated and when it is ready now to laminate.

· Prepare the document that you intend to laminate, this is by ensuring that it fits well within the laminating films, trimming and resizing to make sure it comes out perfect is done at this level. Place the document in between the films.

· To laminate put the paper into the laminating shelf on the machine, which is the side that allows the roller to pick it, and pass it through to the other side after it has completed binding the films together with the paper in between. Check that you push the paper well enough for the rollers to get hold of them.

· Switch on the laminating or the feeding switch which should be indicated by the machine pulling the paper into it.

· The paper comes out on the other end and you should patiently wait for it to completely come out by itself.

· When the paper is completed and is out on the other end, stop the feeding by turning it off.

· Trim the laminating film to the desired size but avoiding cutting deep into the document inside.

· If no more lamination is to be done you can switch off the laminating machine.

Laminating a document has many advantages and therefore it is advisable to keep all of your important documents laminated.

Going to Beauty School Seen As An Attractive Career Choice

Whether you're seeking to change or begin a new career, becoming a cosmetologist offers a rewarding option for a satisfying profession that is in constant demand. Best of all, Cosmetologists enjoy being a part of a service business that helps others look and feel great about their personal appearance.

According to the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS), cosmetology and aesthetics comprise a healthy, growing industry that generates over $ 60 billion a year in revenue for those in the beauty industry.

Depending on the state you plan to work in, becoming a licensed cosmetologist requires completing a set of practice hours and passing a state board exam in cosmetology. The number of practice hours will vary based on the type of services you wish to provide. Licensed cosmetologists can provide a variety of personal services which include hair, nails, and skin.

Cosmetology training programs provide all of the education and oversight needed to become a licensed cosmetologist. Instructors at cosmetology programs are accomplished practitioners who have chosen to teach others the skills necessary to seek employment in the beauty industry. Cosmetology programs can vary depending on their areas of specialization. Not all programs will teach every aspect of personal services for hair, nails and skin. Below are list of the major areas of study:

Hair Styling and Design: cutting and styling hair including coloring and use of wigs and hair extensions.

Esthetics: the study of applying makeup and performing facials, massages, waxing and reflexology.

Nail Technology: the study of the art of nail art, design, tips, forms, wraps and gels.

Barbering: cutting and styling of men's hair which may include coloring and beard trimming and shaving.

Electrolysis: a medically recognized permanent hair removal method for face and body.

Teacher Training: instruction to prepare a cosmetologist as teachers of future cosmetologists.

Besides working in an occupation that gives you the personal satisfaction of making others look their best, another benefit is that your salary can be commensurate to the level and class of services that you provide. If you want to go for glamor and the bright lights, you might want to consider working in the entertainment industry as hair stylist and makeup artist. If you want to run your own business, there is plenty of opportunity to open your own salon or work as a contractor in an established salon where the level of pay you receive depends on the clientele you attract and build in your practice.

Another fact to consider, especially during times of tough economic times, is that cosmetology will always be a service service because hair and nails never stop growing. Just like the restaurant business where eating is a primary human need, there is always room for new places to eat out. Likewise there will always be a need for hair salons and barber shops in every community. Also consider that styles are ever changing and the need to keep up with the current trends will provide economic opportunities for those who can provide the services that clientele demand.

Common Myths About Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is indeed the safest and most effective alternative treatment methods available today; especially for individuals who require regular physical activity but are unable to perform as a result of organic, muscular or neurological lesion. However, there are people who have doubts and concerns regarding the safety and efficacy of physical therapy for the management of pain, mobility issues, recovery and rehabilitation after surgeries.

You may have heard a lot or rumors, myths and misconceptions about physical therapy and physical therapists. It is recommended to clear your queries in order to get benefitted from one of the most recognized and ancient forms of alternative therapy.

One common myth about PT / therapists is that chiropractors and physical therapists can’t work together. The fact is, chiropractor therapy and physical therapy each help achieve positive effects of the other by stabilizing the tissues and restoring healthy circulation. It is however, recommended in some situations not to use the two therapies at one time. Your healthcare provider or therapists are the best people to explain why you cannot utilize chiropractics and PT at the same time. But otherwise, both forms of alternative medicine complement the positive effects in the majority of the cases.

It is commonly believed that PT sessions are quite expensive, which is partly true. Moreover, you may have to go to quite a few sessions in order to get relief. However, it is important to know that most insurance companies cover physical therapy expenses and before crossing out the option of physical therapy, it is better to consult your insurance representative. In a worst case scenario, if your insurance is not covering your session expenses, you still have a few options. You can speak to your therapist to break the cost of therapy in monthly installments so that it becomes easier for you to pay. You can always speak to your therapist regarding discount or concession in lieu of your financial hardship. You will be surprised to know that physical therapists try their best to help patients in need.

There is a misconception that physical therapy exercises focus on major muscle groups like the knee joint or the neck region. In reality, physical therapy helps in strengthening and stabilizing all vital structures of your axial and para-axial skeleton. Not only do these exercise and manipulation support your muscles but they also remove stress and strain from small muscle fibers, tendons and ligaments. Overall, the aim of your therapist is to make your muscles and bones stronger to give better support to hard connective tissue as well as soft supporting stroma.

Another misconception is that the physical therapist can fix everything in one to two sessions. Although, physical therapy is the most effective and potent form of alternative therapy that can help in stabilizing major and chronic injuries with a non-surgical and a non-pharmacological approach; however, it takes a little time for therapy to produce fruitful results.

Physical therapists are trained in understanding patho-physiology of joints, tissues and muscles; however, sometimes the damage is so severe that your physical therapist may require more sessions in order to produce remission. Moreover, the aim of therapy is to promote the natural process of healing by providing an ideal environment to the muscles and tissues. This process may take time but the effects are long lasting and permanent.

It is often though that physical therapy can cure all musculo-skeletal issues. Once again, it is not necessary since in a number of situations, the cause of chronic back pain or aching tissues is not an injury. Sometimes, your physical therapist may just guide you to improve your posture or stabilize your back while sitting or walking. It does not mean that the knowledge of your therapist is sparse or you need another doctor.

The cause of pain or discomfort is not always an organic issue. Sometimes, improper posture or poor physical stability pose stress and strain on supporting ligaments or soft tissues that may lead to limited range of motion and aching discomfort. This can be managed by posture management and simple posture stabilizing exercises. Bottom line is, don’t get disappointed if your therapist is not using special physical therapy techniques on you.

If you still have any misconceptions, questions or reservations towards physical therapy, make an appointment and speak to a therapist to know more about holistic healing.

What is Acid Reflux Disease?

Acid reflux disease, also known as Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, is a common ailment, affecting between 5%-7% of the population. In order to understand what GERD is it is important to be familiar with how the esophagus works. A long muscular tube, the esophagus carries food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach. The average adult esophagus is around ten to thirteen inches long and approximately an half an inch in diameter. GERD is caused by the backflow of acid from the stomach into the esophagus, usually because the lower esophageal sphincter does not close properly. When this happens over a long period of time, the lining of this tract becomes eroded, causing discomfort and pain.

Symptoms of the disease are fairly straightforward and are very similar to the symptoms of heartburn. GERD often include a frequent burning sensation, right behind the breastbone, which sometimes worsens when lying down for extended periods of time. While most cases of heartburn turn out to be non-life threatening, it is important that you visit your doctor at the onset of symptoms. Unfortunately, the symptoms of both indigestion and GERD can also imitate those of heart disease, so it is very important that you seek medical attention to make sure that you get the correct diagnosis.

There are a number of medical tests which your doctor can perform which will confirm the diagnosis of GERD. After your doctor or healthcare professional has taken your medical history, he or she will most likely conduct an test using an Endoscope, a long flexible imaging instrument. This will allow the doctor to visibly exam your esophagus.

If you are diagnosed with Acid Reflux disease, there are a number of treatment options available to you, such as making changes to your diet, reducing stress, and taking over the counter antacids. Serious cases of GERD may require a prescription drug to reduce the acid being produced by your stomach, but lifestyle changes are often enough to control symptoms successfully.

What Everyone Needs to Know About Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer is one which spreads to other organs within the body. In the United States each year 29,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed, a disease that ranks fourth in terms of mortality. Pancreatic cancer accounts for 6% of all cancer-related deaths, while remaining one of the most lethal (the death rate is approximately 10 per 100,000 population). This lethality is due mainly to the vast majority of patients that are not diagnosed until the disease has reached an advanced stage in which other organs are possibly infected. Thus when it is finally diagnosed the patient already has what is known as metastatic pancreatic cancer. One reason for the difficult detection (and not knowing the exact cause of pancreatic cancer) is its location due to the pancreas being hidden between the stomach and the spine. Add to this the fact that he symptoms of pancreatic cancer are very confusing meaning it can occasionally get misdiagnosed for another disease.

To understand the disease we must first understand how a cell develops a carcinogen in the body. The cell matures like all other living things in that it is born, grows, reproduces and ultimately dies. The cells reproduce by dividing in a process called mitosis, in which one stem cell forms two daughter cells. Normal cells divide only for wound repair or to replace those that were lost or died, then stop dividing. In contrast, cancer is an abnormal and continuous multiplication of cells. The cells divide uncontrollably, forming masses and growing into the surrounding areas and spread to other parts of the body, this activity is known as metastasis. These masses of cancer cells at the end cause large enough tumors that can be detected. The generic name of cancer depends on the organ where it originates. Thus, lung cancer originates in the lungs, breast cancer in the mammary gland, metastatic liver cancer in the liver and pancreatic cancer in the pancreas. For example if a cancer that originated in the mammary gland and proceeds to spread to other areas will then be known as metastatic breast cancer. The vessels and lymphatic circulation are similar to the bloodstream, but carry lymph inside, instead of blood. The lymph is a clear fluid containing cellular debris and immune system cells. While cancer cells spread via the bloodstream can lead to metastases in distant organs, cancer cells that spread through the lymphatic system are concentrated in the lymph nodes in areas close to their place of origin.

Once familiar with some medical terms then you can really start to understand how this disease develops and options for treating metastatic pancreatic cancer. Depending on the stages of pancreatic cancer for many patients the treatment will be chemotherapy and radiotherapy accompanied by surgery in which the affected part of the organ is removed. While for others that may already be in the advanced stages there are other alternatives such as palliative medical treatment. Of course, technology advances rapidly and one of the recent medical discoveries developed by Josef M. Issels MD is immunotherapy. Designed to stimulate the regulatory mechanisms, repair mechanisms and the body’s immune system to recognize and kill cancer cells. This treatment that utilises the latest technology using cancer vaccines and other therapies based on research will hopefully extend metastatic pancreas cancer life expectancy.

Common PPE Mistakes in Electric Arc Flash Training Programs

After a 15 years of arc flash testing, investigations and replications with electric arcs, a few lessons have emerged as critical in Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) programs:

1. PPE has to be worn?

Whether it’s because of a lack of training the importance or a policy saying, “Wear it when it’s needed,” or if the right garment wasn’t picked for the job. PPE is no good if it isn’t worn. Most accidents happen when the worker believes they need no protection. If the employer buys the the least expensive garments they will have poor compliance to their policy. Another reason why PPE isn’t worn is that the company believes more is better and provides heavy, uncomfortable PPE. If it is worn all the time, less can be best. The greatest difference in clothing for the arc flash is the difference between non-FR and FR. To be concerned about the difference between a 100 cal/cm² suit and a 40 cal/cm² suit is to miss the point. Many companies will provide 100 cal/cm² suits, which are not worn. It is best to have a worker in an 8 cal/cm² shirt and an arc rated jean than in 100% cotton because it arc rated clothing will not ignite.

Cheaper suits are often heavier but if workers are wearing them for a short time they are a good value. If workers are working in arc flash hoods more than 20 minutes per day consider a lightweight suit, which is at least 40 cal/cm². Some of the 40 cal/cm² suits are one half the weight of others.Adding venting to a hood may add $200 to the cost of the hood but it can make a huge difference in worker comfort. Field trial the options choices to see real world performance.Considering cost and comfort increases compliance.

2. Flame Resistant in the label doesn’t mean anything.

FR Acrylic, nylon and polyester are not really flame resistant for practical purposes. These materials should use another name because “flame resistant” by definition gives the user the wrong impression. They may be fine for a worker who has little or no flame exposure but they are dangerous in electric arc and flash fire conditions where these products melt into the skin. Products you choose should meet the right standards.

Here are the standards to specify:

– Clothing — ASTM F1506 or IEC 61482

– Rainwear — ASTM F1891

– Hoods and Face Shields — ASTM F2178

– Fall Protection Exposed to Electric Arc — ASTM F887

– Gloves — ASTM D120

– Flash Fire Clothing — NFPA 2112, CGSB 155.20

3. Using FR Rainwear rather than Arc-Rated Rainwear.

Make sure you have the right rainwear. Only rainwear that meets ASTM F1891, F2733, or NFPA 2112 will not melt in arc or flash fire conditions. Arc-rated rainwear is usually built on DuPont’s Nomex® or Kevlar® or a blend. Nylon or polyester, even if labeled “FR” are not acceptable in rainwear exposed to arc flash or flash fire.

4. Using non-FR winter wear over FR and thinking you are protected.

An FR shirt under a flammable jacket will not protect. Winterwear that does not meet ASTM F1506 is dangerous in an arc flash. In two accidents I have investigated, a non-FR winter jacket burned workers under FR clothing over 50% of their body. Many winter liners are now available which keep workers warm and protected. Try Westex’s Indura(TM) ModaQuilt(TM) or the the new 3M FR Thinsulate or many other options which do not melt and have F1506 testing.

5. No training on undergarments.

In order the meet the NFPA 70E standard, workers are required to wear non-melting natural fiber undergarments or arc rated underwear. Flame resistant bras and other undergarments are available. Avoid any wickable material which can melt. These materials should not be worn as underwear in arc flash or flash fire exposures. Plain cotton, wool and silk are all good options for winter undergarments or arc rated t-shirts made from materials like Indura UltraSoft® Knits, Springfield’s FireWear®, ITI’s EMC(TM), SSM’s ProC FR(TM), DRIFIRE, FR Wickers wool or various Nomex® Knits are acceptable.

Simplifying an arc flash PPE program by using daily wear with 8 cal/cm² protection and adding an arc flash rainsuit, or an additional coverall or a lightweight flash suit with a flash suit hood makes a well rounded program easier to live with and work in.

Brain Diseases – Meningitis Overview

Infections are responsible for the inflammation of the brain. These infections can be parasitic or fungal but bacteria and viral infections are more common. Inflammation will depend of the infected region.

Common cases include spinal cord inflammation (myelitis), inflammation of the meninges (meningitis) and inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). When the brain swells, it pushes against the skull causing damage.

Meningitis. This affects the 3 layered membrane that covers the brain and spinal cord. Inflammation of the meninges causes pressure on the nerves. Some of the initial symptoms of the brain disease include severe headaches, confusion and fever. It is usually caused by physical injury to the head making it susceptible to infections. Other causes of meningitis include fungal infections, bacterial infections, viral infections, chemical irritations, allergies to drugs and tumors.

Viral meningitis. Adults will experience vomiting, nausea, stiff neck, photo phobia and severe head aches while children will experience fever and become irritable. Shared symptoms include loss of appetite, long sleeping hours and fever. After treatment of the symptoms, recovery is full without complications. Other than treatment, a lot of bed rest is highly recommended. Viral meningitis is the most common meningitis. Transmission of this kind of brain disease can be through direct contact with respiratory secretions or the stool of an infected person.

Bacterial meningitis. It causes deafness, irreversible brain damage and learning disability. The infection usually originates from the upper respiratory tract moves with the blood system to the brain to cause brain damage. Bacterial meningitis can also be spread from one person to another through contact with infected respiratory and or throat secretions. The brain disease is more serious as it can cause death. Bacterial infection is the second most common cause of meningitis. It is also more dangerous so early diagnosis and treatment is very important. Older folks have higher chances if death from this kind of meningitis but appropriate antibiotic medication can reduce this risk. Treatment also differs with the kind of bacterial infection.

However, both viral and bacterial infections will produce symptoms such as a stiff neck, fever and body aches. Severe inflammation of the meningitis can also cause strokes and seizures.

It is important to see a doctor on the onset of the symptoms of the brain disease so as to determine whether it is a viral or bacterial infection. This is because treatment differs with the kind of infection and the region.

A Mind With Clairvoyance

Clairvoyance is a topic on most of the people’s mind. Many people believe that clairvoyance is a trait which is seen in cinemas mostly but the reality is, thousands of people around the world are blessed with this unique ability. Before understanding how it helps in eliminating negative influence from the life we need to know:

What exactly clairvoyance is

The word clairvoyance is derived from two French terms meaning “clear vision”. This meaning was derived in the 17th century. Clairvoyance is considered as a special gift. It is experienced by only a few numbers of people. The person with clairvoyance has the ability to visualize events and people at another point in time. Clairvoyance can also be linked to second sight because the people having this can visualize or see the vision of any person, place, location, object or maybe any physical event which finally turns out to be true. This kind of vision occurs in mind. Here the person with clairvoyance doesn’t see a spirit sitting on a couch or a bed but, the vision is something which comes out from the mind. Few clairvoyance abilities which one might have experienced: Clairvoyance is sometimes experienced by people but they don’t actually realize why they are getting this.

Few psychic abilities are:

a) Random images flashing before your eyes suddenly.

b) Decent colours surrounding a person or living things.

c) Dreams which seems real.

d) A slight movement in your peripheral vision.

Different ways of receiving clairvoyant messages:

a) Images in your head: different people experience different things. It can be a snapshot of an image in mind or a vision of any symbol or maybe moving pictures etc.

b) The third eye: If one has the ability he or she might see the messages/visions/ images in their mind. Via third eye messages from our spiritual guides come through.

c) Symbols: Symbols can be a huge part when we talk about psychic ability. Many of the time the people receiving psychic messages are symbolic. One might experience the things or might be playing some character.

Types of clairvoyance:

There are three types in this:

Precognition is the ability to predict or visualize events that have not yet come.

Retrocognition is the ability to see events and people related to past.

Remote Viewing is the ability to see events and people who are beyond the range of the standard eye.

The people having clairvoyance experience a variety of visions even in dreams. These visions are so accurate that maybe one may dream of his or her loved once getting into a car crash accident and then later finds it comes true. Or one may get a vision of some historic event and later finds that this similar event has already happened.

What history tells us about clairvoyance?

In history, there have been numerous times when people claimed others or themselves to be clairvoyant. In history Christian saints claimed themselves to be able to visualize things which were occurring far from their sensory perception. They claimed this to be a gift of God. Not only Christian saints but also Jesus Christ, Iona of, Anne Catherine Emmerich and much more recorded as being able to know things that were far from human perception.

Similar cases came out from different religions as well. The ability of clairvoyance was considered as a higher power and not thought as an ability that lay in every person.

What does Jainism says about clairvoyance?

In Jainism, clairvoyance is considered as one of the five kinds of knowledge. In Jainism the beings of heaven and hell have the ability of clairvoyance in them. According to Sarvarthasiddhi, “this kind of knowledge is called ‘Avadhi’ as it ascertains matter in downward range”.

What position does bible takes on clairvoyance?

Bible takes a negative position on this. The Bible expresses complete disapproval to clairvoyance and anything related to magical powers, practices or phenomena. Bible says that the Almighty has created the creatures with limitations for a reason. He created us so that we can be dependent on him. The moment people try to gain knowledge beyond their sixth sense then god is the only one who can answer everything. These powers like clairvoyance or magical powers or vision have no role in conveying the revelation of God. The god is the creator and no one is beyond it. Bible shows no support to clairvoyance.

Is clairvoyance a gift?

People having the clairvoyance power are different from other people not physically or mentally but it’s just the vision which makes them a bit unique than others. There are few traits which a clairvoyant person has:

One learns better by seeing things or information visually. The person might grasp any information written on a paper, chart or a book instead of listening.

One might visualize things or in other words, day dream things in mind that they can actually feel that happening.

One is visually a sharp observant. If anyone moves his or her book a half inch from its place the person is gonna notice.

All this might sound creepy and might be a clairvoyant person had been suggested not to daydream and think real but this is a gift which one must cherish.

Life Insurance Fraud

Life insurance fraud is a black eye on both life insurance companies and life insurance customers. Both parties have been guilty of life insurance fraud and will be again–especially since, sadly, fraud seems to be on the rise according to most statistical measures.

Research by the non-profit The Coalition Against Insurance Fraud concludes that life insurance fraud committed by all parties costs an average household $1650 per year and increases life insurance premiums by 25%.

Life insurers are most often guilty of insurance fraud in the form of their agents doing “churning”. This is where the agent seeks to cancel your existing life insurance policy and replace it with a new policy that is paid for by the “juice”, or cash value, in your existing policy. Agents do this to earn more commissions for themselves without having to seek new prospects for business. Churning can result in increased premiums for a customer and clearly costs them out of their cash value.

Another insurance fraud practiced by agents, however, is called “windowing”. This is where, being unable to attain a client’s or applicant’s signature on a necessary document but already having that signature elsewhere, the agent holds up a signed document behind the unsigned document, presses it against a window to make the light shine through, and traces over the signature with a pen in order to forge the signature of the client or applicant.

When big name insurance companies have their agents do bad things it makes big headlines, but the fact is that the public is far more guilty of insurance fraud than companies are. And of course making false claims is the thing they do the most, which is why all claims on life insurance death benefit payouts are subject to investigation.

But falsely stating background or financial income information is another form of insurance fraud often engaged in by consumers. They might be embarrassed by their medical history or income, or they may realize that if they tell the truth they will have their coverage diminished or their premiums will be very high. If a life insurance company finds out someone lied on their application they have the right not to pay the claim or not pay the full death benefit depending on the circumstances and the policy.

But there are things that buyers of life insurance can do to protect themselves against insurance fraud, since they don’t have the great investigative resources that life insurance companies do.

Remember, when it comes to life insurance, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There’s no free lunch.

Save all of your life insurance paperwork, including getting receipts for every penny you give your agent, and never ignore any notifications from your life insurance company.

Life insurance is never free and it’s not a pension plan, although certain policies can indeed become self-funding–but they never start off that way.

Never buy any coverage that you feel strongly is unnecessary, never let yourself be pressured, and never borrow to finance life insurance.

Although it can be part of an investment portfolio, life insurance’s number one role is protection against the unforeseen–and most people don’t need life insurance in their later years. It is intended to be temporary.

On the Nature of Matter and Mind

Matter is in constant activity though we may not perceive it directly. Matter is " active " (moving, rotating, spinning, twisting, vibrating, evolving, growing, expanding, exchanging, transforming, etc.) within and through space. This activity of matter found in our environments exhibits itself in various events , sequential changes, and observations that we call " events" . An event is an occurrence that happens in our environment. For the most part we can see these events in nature with our naked eye, or experience them through our physical interactions with matter. Everything that we see, touch, taste, hear, and smell is matter and this matter is contained within what we as man have come to define as the universe.

Fundamentally, but not exclusively, man acquires knowledge from the events of the material universe by way of his five senses. Through our five senses we find that some things in our physical reality are concrete, have shapes, dimensions, odors, colors, flavors, volume, while others are abstract, elusive, and difficult to define. Even more so, we find that some events lead to discomfort, while other events could result in the loss of life. It is by way of our five senses that we are able to interact with this universe physically and mentally to derive material benefit, comfort, and support. We can conclude that the basis for man's social progress, academic, industrial, and scientific advances comes from the quintessential knowledge (information) that is dispersed so eloquently through our material environment long before the man had awakened to his reality of self! This information found in creation is fed to our amoeba type brain as food for burning, for feeding, for learning, compiling the man on towards the process of high-level thinking, a thing innate in the Homo sapiens primordial DNA. Thus, matter speaks to man in its own system of communication. Man interprets this communication from matter, translates, and shares this knowledge to other men by the use of a tool called "language", which is composed of something called " words ".

Man develops "words", which complements the language to describe and classify his observations and events that he experiences from his physical environment. For example, words like hot, cold, warm, sweet, sour, cool, dry, large, and small are all derived from man's observations and interactions with this material universal reality that he lives in. We can say that "words" are meanings of expressions and descriptions that already exist in our universal reality, ready at some time. The different languages of the "word" are not important themselves, but rather the descriptions, expressions, and meanings associated with the "word" are the endpoints of focus. So in the beginning of our universe were a "word" or "words", and when a man observes or experiences an event in the physical creation, the "word" then takes on flesh.

From these observations we find that the human mental process is capable of taking concrete observational events from the natural environment and converges these events into an abstract (not concrete) language that describes and defines these events without losing the substance and meanings of the original observations. Therefore, the larger material reality, the universe, influences man's evolution not only physically but also mentally, and spiritually. Compared to the other animate species that inhabit the planet earth one can conclude that man is the expression of matter discovered at the highest levels out of our known universal material reality.

Light Therapy for Depression

Wondering how light therapy could alleviate depression? Read on. Natural light (sunlight) has been used for centuries to cure certain disorders in the body. In fact, it is considered very sacred and holy in some traditions. The power of light is many-fold. It can directly stimulate the nerves of the brain and bring about numerous chemical reactions and changes leading to different nervous signals. These signals in turn alleviate certain certain forms of stress, depression, anxiety, fear, etc.

Light therapy is very effective in treating seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, a condition seen in people who undergo a state of depression during winter seasons of the year. Depression, anxiety, lethargy, low self-esteem, a sudden increase in weight, abnormal eating patterns, sleeping excessively and difficulty in concentration are some of the symptoms observed.

Light therapy does not involve complex equipments and procedures. It is in fact one of the simplest methods to cure the disorder or decrease the severity. Here is a small light therapy box is given to the patient. The box does not emit any specific rays. It emits light, which is similar to normal light. This light has a direct effect on the brain and brings about numerous chemical reactions in the nerves. A doctor's prescription is necessary for this treatment.

Place the box in front of your eyes first up in the morning as soon as you wake up. Make sure you do not place the light box too close to your eyes as this might damage the retina and cells leading to vision disadvantage. The light will produce certain chemical changes in your brain, which you do not perceive and in the process will help to relate the condition.

HIV and AIDS Testing

What are HIV and AIDS?

Is there a person who has not heard HIV (which stands for Human immunodeficiency Virus)? We highly doubt this fact. HIV has been first discovered in 1981, and it is assumed that as of January 2006, it has killed more than 25 million people. Infection with HIV can occur through several different ways, all involving some sort of transfer of bodily fluid (which can be blood, semen and breast milk, to name but a few).

Most people who contract HIV ever develop AIDS (which is almost synonymous with HIV, even though it is not the same thing). AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome, and basically means that at this point, the HIV patient's immune gradually becomes weaker over time, to the point where the individual is extremely susceptible to illness and tumors. This can manifest in a variety of ways including pulmonary infections, gastrointestinal infections and even neurological and psychiatric effects. It is very likely to eventually lead to the individual's death.

Is there a cure?

Although there is no vaccine or cure for AIDS or HIV, there has been a lot of progress made in the decades since HIV's discovery. Consequently, there are effective antiretroviral methods which can slow down its progress, as well as reduce its mortality rates.

Since a person who has contracted HIV may unwittingly transfer it to another person which most commonly happens during sexual interference, it is very important for individuals who suspect they may have HIV to get them checked. There are multiple types of tests, including ELISA, western blot, and rapid or point of care tests.

That being said, it is important to remember that HIV tests are not perfect, and at times may produce false positives, meaning, the person is actually healthy but the test reports he has HIV, as well as false negatives, meaning, the person is infected with HIV but according to the test he is healthy.

However, the accuracy of HIV testing is getting increasingly better. In 2005, using a western blot HIV test, the chance of a false-positive is roughly 1 in 250,000.

There are several organizations that provide this anonymous and confidential HIV testing. These tests can be done using urine samples, blood samples or even saliva samples. Furthermore, there are also home testing kits which can be used at home.

In conclusion, if you suspect you may have contracted HIV, get yourself checked. It is crucial, not only so you could get treatment for yourself, but also so you do not infect your partner or family accidentally.

An Integrated Approach to Treat Depression

Depression, anxiety, phobias and mental health feature almost daily in the media and it appears that depression is fast becoming one of the biggest problems experienced within society. These conditions increasingly affect people living in the modern world and research has led to estimates that at least 17% of the adult population have had, or will have, an episode of depression of sufficient clinical severity to warrant treatment. A special national Institute of Mental Health report on Depressive Disorders in 1973 stated that depression accounts for 75% of all psychiatric hospitalisations and that during any given year 15% of all adults between 18 and 74 may suffer significant depressive symptoms. Current studies indicate that the lifetime risk of depression in an adult population could be as high as 30%.

Along with the increased incidence of depression has been an explosion in the use of prescription drugs to treat the condition, but recent reports have questioned whether these are effective or indeed simply create more problems for the patient. Accordingly there is a growing interest in finding a fresh approach to the treatment of these conditions. Having trained in clinical psychology and psychotherapy I am able to incorporate a lot of the accepted practices. However, the more I worked with individuals and with groups I found that by integrating the eastern inspired approaches that I learnt in India, I was able to achieve far more effective and lasting results within a shorter period of time.

Understanding Depression

In Psychiatry depression is referred to as a mood disorder. Mood disorders have been known to man since antiquity; the old Testament describes King Saul as suffering from severe depressive episodes. However, the term encompasses a wide spectrum of emotions ranging from deep depression to unbounded elation and mania and so understanding the behaviour of individuals suffering from depression can be very challenging.

All people experience a range of emotions and in general they are a healthy part of life and feeling appropriate emotions contributes positively to our well being. However, emotions are of two main types; firstly affective emotions, in other words a short lived emotional response to an event, and secondly mood, which is a lasting and dominant emotional response which colours the whole psychic life.

More than 90% of depressed people experience prolonged moods of sadness, discouragement or a sense of not caring any more. However, to classify someone with a major depressive episode clinicians look for five or more of the following symptoms to have been present during the preceding two weeks. There should also be a noticeable change in previous functioning with at least one of the symptoms being either a depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure.

1. Depressed mood most of the day.

2. Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day.

3. Significant weight loss when not dieting, or weight gain eg. A change of more than 5% of body weight in a month. Or a decrease or increase in appetite nearly every day.

4. Insomnia (sleeplessness) or hypersomnia (excessive sleep) nearly everyday.

5. Psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day.

6. Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day

7. Feeling of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt

8. Diminished ability to think or concentrate or indecisiveness

9. Recurrent thoughts of death

No single casual factor as to why people get depressed has been identified. Research points to many factors that seem to contribute to its development, including genetics, biochemical changes and personality theories. Several research papers have reported findings which suggest that relatives of patients with major depressive disorders have a higher prevalence of depression than people in the general population. Other research has focussed on biochemical correlates of depression and studied the role of chemicals that transmit nerve impulses from one neuron to another in the brain. Whilst several theories related to depression have been developed regarding personality types.

My experience as a Doctor has led me to view each client as an individual whose requirements need personalised attention. Human beings are a complex creation whose health and wellbeing depends on a balance in all dimensions of their lives, from physical health to behavioural, energy and even environmental aspects.

Treating Depression

Conventional western medicine generally treats depression using medication eg. Tricyclic, heterocyclic anti-depressants and the new SSRT drugs. The commonly used psychological therapies for the treatment of depression are individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy and cognitive behaviour therapy. Eastern Psychotherapy integrates eastern methods, such as meditation, yoga, pranic, or energy, healing, mantra and sound healing, with elements of the traditional psychotherapy developed in the West. When treating depression and other mental health conditions it is vital to look for the causative factors and explore the issues using ayurvedic principles as well as acknowledging the spiritual component. It may sometimes also be appropriate to study the astrological chart of the person being treated to seek a better understanding of the influences affecting the individual and gem therapy, which is a commonly accepted practice in many parts of Asia, may be recommended.

The treatment of conditions such as depression, addiction and anxiety is undoubtedly enhanced by the use of complementary techniques. The value of seeking help from professionals who have worked with both approaches is they can select the right choice of treatment for each individual. Orthodox techniques often deal effectively with the symptoms, however eastern practices can be more helpful with the underlying causes. A therapist who understands the personal needs of each individual is more able to provide them with an empowering approach to their illness. For some the focus may be on the traditional Western methods, but for others accelerated and positive results can be achieved by blending the best of East and West in an integrated treatment programme.

With an integrated approach to depression most individuals are able to benefit within 3 or 4 sessions, sometimes even less, depending on the nature of their condition. It is important with any therapeutic approach to ensure clients do not develop a dependency on the treatment or only enjoy a temporary respite because the underlying causes have not been addressed.

Miss K, a 35 year old female failed to respond to conventional treatment. An holistic approach included energy and environmental assessments as well as her medical background. She had a five year history of depression which had been particularly severe in the preceding six months. She was using anti-depressants and had undergone several sessions of counseling which she did not like.

The assessment on the energetic level revealed some blockages in the heart and solar plexus chakras. The environment at home was dark and sombre with black and grey being her main choice of colours; there was no flow of energy.

She was recommended to try a combination of energy therapies including Reiki and music/mantra treatment along with some suggestions of changes to the home environment. She also used a herbal remedy (St John’s Wort), massage and acupuncture and embarked on six sessions of cognitive behavioural therapy. Her programme lasted six months, but she responded very well and has been free of depression for more than a year reporting that she feels generally well, is taking an active interest in her life and in her personal development.
