While most of us believe that chemical supplements and diet pills are the only means to see weight loss and a fitter life, we often tend to miss out on the most important natural weight loss techniques, probiotics being one. Probiotics helps with digestion by breaking down the food we consume. Enzymes play an important role in metabolism and digestion as well.

Consequences of Improper Digestion

Our body experiences a number of health issues when we are not able to digest the food we eat. Some of the most common results of digestion problems are constipation, diarrhea, malnutrition, weight gain, nausea, ulcers, infections and even psychological problems! Surprisingly, it is often the medicines we consume to stay healthy that create problems for our digestive system.

Antibiotics are a major cause of digestive problems. Antibiotics are consumed to kill the bacteria present in our body when we fall sick. However, some of the bacteria present in our system are essential for digestion, like probiotics. Probiotics are useful bacteria that play a major role in helping us digest food. Consumption of antibiotics risks to sweep these bacteria completely from our system, posing a serious threat for us.

Our present-day diet mainly contains processed food which lacks these essential bacteria. Therefore it becomes essential for us to consume health supplements that actually supply probiotics at times, especially when we take antibiotics. Some of these health supplements contain the essential enzymes that help with digestion and weight loss as well. Such health supplements become very essential for us in order to prevent the various diseases we have discussed earlier that result from improper digestion.

Choosing the Right Dietary Supplements

Our ancestors used to be much healthier than we are today. Many health experts claim that this is because of the fresh vegetables and fruits that consumed that came directly from the farm. Processed food lacks the qualities of fresh food, which is why we see so many health issues today. This is where the health supplements come into play.

When choosing a health product you need to be aware of a number of different points. First of all, you should always choose to purchase a health supplement that is completely natural. It is not a good idea to consume a chemical or synthetic product. Natural health supplements are generally very safe for your body and show no side effects.

Next, make sure the health supplement you purchase to help you digest food contains the right enzymes and probiotics that are essential for your body. You may even consult your physician to understand if the product you are planning to buy will be the right one for you. Always remember, the best products that show you weight loss are the ones that strengthen your digestive system and metabolism.

Finally, only purchase a product that has been manufactured by a reliable brand. Do not opt for cheap options when you are not sure about the reliability of the product. Price should not be your priority, but the quality and the composition of the natural health supplement that you are planning to purchase. That is the secret to a secret towards making enzymes and probiotics working towards showing you weight loss naturally!

Non-Invasive Skin Care Treatment Options

Most of our age is reflected by our skin via changes in its texture and brightness. Unfortunately, age is first seen on the skin than on any other part of our body. Our skin begins its aging process in our twenties. The ability of our skin to retain water reduces and oxygen levels also reduce. This is the main reason why the skin starts looking dull and the natural glow reduces. The skin also starts producing less and less collagen. Due to this, fine lines begin to appear on the surface. Here, early thirties is a good time to start skin care treatments if you notice any of the symptoms. Non invasive skin care is the first step to rejuvenate your skin and save it from the effects of aging.

Preventive skin care should be started early. At the age of forty, generally the skin care treatments are corrective. So, skin care is essential to keep your skin 'healthy'.

Give it proper care regularly. Take preventive measures rather than corrective treatments. Take care of your skin!

About Car Diagnostic Tools

It's common for cars to develop problems and if you want your car to be in perfect working condition you need to diagnose its problems. For easy understanding, car diagnostic tools can be broadly categorized into two main groups: low tech and high tech tools.

Low tech diagnostic tools

These are ideal for older cars that are not computer controlled. Some of the basic tools that fall under this category are: 12v test light, timing light, vacuum gauge, mechanic's stethoscope, vacuum pump, fuel pressure gauge, leak-down detector, and compression tester.

High tech tools

Two main categories of high-tech diagnostic tools are: scan tools and code readers. Code readers are the most basic computer tools that are used in pulling codes from the car's computer. When the code is rolled, you are able to have a starting point for your diagnostic procedure.

In addition to helping you pull the codes, code readers also provide you with basic access to live or freeze frame data from the car's computer.

Scan tools on the other hand are code readers but with added functionalities. Basic scan tools allow you to read and clear codes from the car's computers. The tools also allow you to view all of the available data in the car's computer.

Scan tools have also been shown to have the ability of providing you with more information about the codes.

You should note that the information displayed by the tools depends on the quality of the tool; therefore, if you have a high quality tool, you will see a lot of information; however, if you have a low quality tool you will have access to basic information. You should note scan tools that provide more information are usually more expensive.

While code readers and scan tools are the most important high-tech diagnostic tools, there are others such as multimeters that are great to have. A multimeter is a device that is used in checking problems in the electrical system of the car. For example, you can use it to check wherever the element in your heated O2 sensor is good or not.

Conclusion

This is all you need to know about car diagnostic tools. You should note that the tools are expensive; therefore, you should be very careful when buying them so that you are not ripped off. As rule of thumb you should always do your research in order to identify a reputable store selling high quality tools.

Detecting Kidney Disease and Dysfunction: Three Steps to Protect Kidney Health

March is National Kidney Month and this year, March 14 was designated World Kidney Day. This year’s theme is “Amazing kidneys!” Recognition designed to highlight the importance of kidney function, comparing it to that of the heart and lungs.

More than 26 million Americans have some form of kidney disease. Because it often goes undetected, many of those people will never discover they have it until the disease has already progressed. Nephrologist Dr. Trevor From, notes, “Kidney disease is like hypertension in that it’s silent.” This lack of awareness makes kidney disease an even more insidious killer.

The Kidney Foundation’s national president, Niloufer Bhesania emphasizes that, “World Kidney Day is a great way of promoting the importance of taking care of your kidneys and your overall health. It is also an opportune time to make a monetary donation to assist others or to make a positive decision regarding organ donation and to speak of your wishes with loved ones.”

Kidney disease affects at least one in 10 Americans. That increases the chances that you, someone you know, or a loved one, might be at risk of developing kidney disease. This most often occurs as a complication of heart disease, diabetes, and/or high blood pressure, which are its leading causes. Because of its effect on blood filtration, kidney dysfunction can lead to many other serious degenerative diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even cancer.

Considered the body’s master chemists, the kidneys main function is to remove toxins from the blood,by filtering blood plasma and separating waste substances from useful chemicals. However, they do much more than that, producing certain hormones that regulate blood pressure, blood volume and blood pH, along with red blood cell production.

The kidneys hallmark is their outstanding filtering capacity. Dr. Barbara Ballermann, a professor of medicine and the director of the division of nephrology and immunology at the University of Alberta, offered this analogy, “Think of the gasoline tank of a car. You might have 60 liters in a tank. Well, the kidneys filter over three times as much every day. This is a huge rate of filtration. If they get hurt or sick, you end up losing vital protein in the urine and that can be detrimental to life.”

When the kidneys fail to function properly, it can lead to complete kidney failure, which causes toxins and waste products to accumulate in the body. This disrupts the chemical balance, as well as the thickness and volume of blood and other body fluids. The facts are plain; kidney disease is common, damaging, and often is undetected by those who have it. It is also treatable, so that kidney failure is not the only outcome. For those with kidney failure, dialysis, or a kidney transplant are the only chances of survival.

To manage your kidney health, follow this simple three-step process.

Determine if you are at risk.

  1. Do you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes
  2. Are you African-American, Native-American or Asian-American
  3. Do you smoke
  4. Do you have high cholesterol
  5. Are you obese
  6. Do you have a family member whose kidneys have failed
  7. Are you older than 65 years of age

Dr. Michael Copland, past-chair of The Kidney Foundation of Canada’s Medical Advisory Committee, notes, “People at higher risk for developing kidney disease need to pay close attention to their kidney health. Regular monitoring of the kidneys, through simple blood and urine tests can show how well the kidneys are functioning. These tests also allow people to gauge their risk for developing kidney failure in the future.”

Perform annual testing.

  1. Urinalysis
  2. Blood testing (basic panels including blood sugar, cholesterol and kidney function tests)
  3. Blood pressure

Your health practitioner will examine your results looking at several factors. The two laboratory blood tests that measure kidney function are creatinine and blood urea nitrogen, or BUN.The creatinine level measures kidney function and is often elevated with kidney damage. BUN, another indicator, is used along with the Creatinine/BUN ratio to further assess kidney functioning.

Albumin is an essential protein in human blood that helps regulate blood pressure. Albuminuria, the presence of albumin in urine, is a sign that albumin is leaking into the urine. This is one of the early signs of chronic kidney disease.

Estimated GFR or (e-GFR) is another useful measurement of kidney function. Chronic kidney disease causes a reduced e-GFR, as shown through blood testing. It is calculated using age, sex and the serum creatinine blood test result, to estimate the kidneys ability to filter waste products.

Practice prevention

  1. Eat a diet full of natural and unprocessed foods that enhance health
  2. Drink adequate amounts of water
  3. Cut down on salt consumption
  4. Get some form of exercise daily
  5. Maintain a healthy weight
  6. Develop healthy stress management techniques
  7. Practice good sleep habits
  8. Avoid smoking and drug or alcohol abuse

Kidney health effects, and is affected by, all other systems in the body. Maintaining healthy kidneys will minimize your risk of developing other degenerative diseases. By creating awareness and focusing on this often-overlooked aspect of wellness, you can maintain full kidney function and experience improved overall health and well-being throughout your lifetime.

Women's Weight Lifting Phobia

I've noticed that a lot of the women I've trained with over the years suffer from weight lifting phobia. By that I mean that they tend to be overly concerned with developing muscularity, as if itís a bad thing. I guess a lot of women are under the misconception that the development of muscle is simple and happens overnight. The truth is that muscular development takes a combination of discipline, proper food intake, and training, and to develop huge muscles takes genetics or supplementation most of the time. The truth is that everyone can benefit from resistance training of some type, whether it's free weights (dumbbells or barbells) or exercise bands. Not only does a toned physique help protect your skeletal frame and increase your resilience to injury, but it also increases your metabolism.

I guess I take off that some people think musculature comes quickly and easily. I have heard more than once, "I do not want to look like Arnold," and just let me say that this is not possible for a woman. Many of the female clients Iíve trained shy away from resistance training in the beginning for this very reason, when in reality looking "like Arnold" will probably never happen, at least not naturally! So my point is please do not be afraid to participate in a resistance-training program for fear of developing too much muscularity. I have even heard this from obese women! I'm definitely not trying to offend anyone out there, only to put your minds at ease. So donít shy away from the weights, instead give them a try before you rule them out.

When engaging in a weight-training program, you should push yourself provided that you are injury free and have consulted your physician before getting started. For increasing strength as well as toning, I usually suggest training somewhere in the eight to fifteen repetition range per set. That means that if the weight is so light that you can pump out 40 reps without batting an eye, then the weight is probably too light. You should feel fatigued by the end of a set, provided that the weight is heavy enough.

So take a good look at your training regimen, and ask yourself if you suffer from "Arnold phobia." If so, rest assured that this muscular metamorphosis will not happen, and just get out there and push yourself. If you are in good health, there is no reason to baby yourself, you should be sweating by the time you are done working out. Granted, it's fantastic that you exercise at all regardless of the intensity, but you will be doing yourself a favor and getting the most out of your workouts if you put 100% into them. So what are you waiting for, give this a try for a couple weeks and see if you do not notice a difference!

The 7 Types of Arthritis Children Can Develop

Arthritis is not a health condition reserved for adults. In fact, approximately 300,000 children in the United States suffer from juvenile arthritis or pediatric rheumatoid disease, which are the terms used to describe arthritis in children.

What is Juvenile Arthritis (JA)?

Juvenile arthritis is not in itself a disease, but it is rather a term used to describe a variety of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, or pediatric rheumatoid conditions that can affect children younger than 16 years of age. There are many different types of JA and each comes with its own symptoms, causes, and treatment options. Below we will explore the main types of JA conditions:

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA)

This is the most common type of JA. This condition induces the immune system to attack the body's tissues by mistake, which leads to inflammation of the joints and other areas of the body.

Causes: Idiopathic actually means "of unknown origin." There is no known cause for most types of JIA. The only lead so far is research that shows a genetic predisposition in certain children to develop this condition.

Common Symptoms:

  • Swelling and tenderness in the joints
  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Not being able to bend or straighten joints completely
  • Joints that are warm to the touch
  • Fever
  • Rashes
  • Sleep problems
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced appetite or weight loss
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Treatment: Unfortunately, there is no known cure for JIA. However, with an early diagnosis and aggressive treatment the child can achieve a state of remission, in which the inflammation and pain are controlled. JIA treatment will be determined by a physician and can include medication, lifestyle adjustments, eye and dental care.

Subtypes: There are 6 subtypes of JIA: Systemic JIA, Oligoarticular JIA, Polyarticular JIA, Juvenile Psoriatic Arthirits, Enthesitis-related JIA, and Undifferentiated Arthritis.

Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM)

This condition causes muscle weakness and skin rashes, and it is an inflammatory disease. JDM affects mostly children between 5 – 10 years of age.

Causes: The cause of JDM is still unknown, but there is a reason to believe that it has to do with abnormalities in the immune system, which lead to inflammation and damage of the muscle cells and blood vessels.

Common Symptoms:

  • Red or purple skin rashes on the eyelids or cheeks
  • Patchy rashes around the nails, elbows, knees, or chest
  • Muscle weakness, usually in the neck, back, or stomach

Treatment: The aim of treatment is to reduce infection and improve function. Some medications that can be prescribed include anti-inflammatories and intravenous immunoglobulin. Other type of treatments necessary might be: physical therapy, speech therapy, and skin protective products.

Juvenile Lupus

Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body. It can affect almost every organ, including joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, etc.

Causes: The possible causes of Lupus are yet unknown, but it is believed that Lupus is linked to genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors.

Common Symptoms: Symptoms vary depending on the organ being affected. Lupus patients often go on periods of remission where they present no symptoms.

  • Fatigue
  • Pain or swelling in joints
  • Skin rashes
  • Fever
  • Hair loss
  • Mouth sores
  • Present Raynaud's Phenomenon (skin color changes due to the cold)

Treatment: The treatment is aimed at managing the symptoms and preventing complications. Treatment may include medications, dietary changes, and exercise.

Juvenile Scleroderma

Scleroderma is a group of conditions that causes the skin or tissue to harden. It can affect the skin, muscle, bones, joints, and, in the most severe cases, vital internal organs.

Causes: Scleroderma is caused by the immune system mistaking the body's tissues as foreign invaders and attacking them. This leads to inflammation and hardening of the tissues. It is believed that genetic and environmental factors play a role in triggering this disease.

Common Symptoms: Symptoms vary depending on whether the patient sufferers from localized or systemic scleroderma. Localized scleroderma is characterized by thickened or thinned skin that becomes lighter or darker, and it becomes shiny or smooth in appearance. Systemic scleroderma affects the internal organs and can also show up in the skin of the fingers, hands, forearms, and face.

Treatment: There is no known cure for juvenile scleroderma; however, the disease can go into remission with the proper care. Topical medications and systemic medications can be used.

Kawasaki Disease

Kawasaki diseases is a rare condition in which the blood vessels get inflamed causing high fever, rashes, and joint pain and swelling. This disease can result in long-term heart complications if not addresses properly.

Causes: The cause of Kawasaki disease is yet unknown. It is thought that an infection might play a role in triggering it.

Common Symptoms:

  • High fevers of up to 104 F
  • Joint pain and swelling
  • Skin rashes
  • Swollen hands and feet
  • Swollen neck lymph nodes
  • Red, chapped lips
  • Peeling skin in the genital area, hands, and feet
  • Redness in the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet
  • Red or white coating on the tongue, or visible red bumps in the back of the tongue
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Cough and runny nose
  • Diarrhea and vomiting
  • Red mucous membranes in the mouth
  • Irritability

Treatment: Patients with Kawasaki disease need to be treated right away in a hospital.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is not a disease but a collection of symptoms like pain, fatigue, and memory issues that can be managed and are not life threatening.

Causes: The causes of fibromyalgia are unknown. There are several studies that suggest that injury, trauma, or infection might be linked to the sunset of this condition.

Common Symptoms:

  • Widespread musculoskeletal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Sadness or depression
  • Problems concentrating and remembering things

Treatment: There is no known cure for fibromyalgia but the symptoms can be managed with medications and natural therapies.

Mixed Connective Tissue Disease

This is a rare disorder that presents symptoms from lupus, scleroderma, and polymyositis. The symptoms mimic those of the 3 conditions mentioned before and they usually do not present themselves at the same time.

Treatment: Treatment depends on which organs are involved and may include anti-inflammatory corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs, and other medications.

It is important to visit a specialist for proper diagnosis of JA. The best type of doctor trained to treat these diseases would be a pediatric rheumatologist, but most families have a team of different specialists participating in the care of the child. These teams of specialists may include a physical therapist, an orthopedic surgeon, a dietitian, and a counselor, among others.

Depression – 7 Self Help Tips For Mild Depression

Relaxation from mild depression is plausible! You just have to take note of these self-help tips to get yourself up from that state. Depression is a psychological condition where a person’s gloomy emotions start to lead his or her lifestyle in a downward spiral. A person’s depression can last for more than just one episode and can go on for months and years to come.

It is wise to know symptoms in which a depressive can start relaxation techniques and hopefully, prevent any other depressing thoughts or feelings.

The first technique is to get a good distraction when you are feeling blue. If you are working and it still gets to you, increase your workload. The more you don’t think about it, the more it helps you. Better to be busy than to be lonely. The second tip is to keep an active lifestyle. Being idle does not help depressed people because it gives them more time to think about how cruel the world is. Thirdly, a great distraction and stress-reliever is sex. It is not only good for your mood and pleasure, but for your body as well.

Next tip is to make sure that you have a healthy diet. Avoid your junk food and sugar intake and instead, increase your consumption of wholegrain cereals, vegetables, fruits, lean meat, low fat dairy and dish. These foods have the right elements to relieve your depression. For example, the amino acid tryptophan that are found in turkey, chicken, peas and nuts are great food sources to alleviate depression. The next tip is to exercise! Eating a good diet must come with good exercise. Keeping the body fit and healthy will ward off any unnecessary negative emotions. Also, exercising will help you space out and concentrate on working out instead of thinking about sadness. The next tip is to get familiar with aromatherapy. This is an alternative stress-reliever because it appeals to your sense of smell. Finally, indulge in relaxation. Take a break and rest -there is no harm to it.

Relaxation will come to you if you apply any of these tips and surely, your depression will most likely be controlled and hopefully, would not return any time sooner. Take action as soon as you can, besides, what have you got to lose?

Remember, people can and do make recoveries from depression and go on to lead their best lives imaginable. Seek help.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery enhances the shape and size of a woman’s breasts, using breast implants. Women choose to have breast augmentation surgery to enhance the contours of their body, to correct loss of breast volume following pregnancy, to make their breasts symmetrical, and for other reasons. With breast augmentation surgery, a woman’s bust line can be increased by one or more cup sizes.

At The Plastic Surgery Center of Nashville in Tennessee, we perform breast augmentation surgery with saline breast implants, though silicone breast implants are available to women participating in certain FDA-approved studies.

Breast Augmentation Surgery

At our cosmetic surgery practice in Nashville, Tennessee, breast augmentation surgery is performed with general anesthesia. The breast augmentation surgeon will make the surgical incision along the crease on the underside of the breast or around the areola. The breast augmentation surgeon works through the incision, creating a pocket behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle to accommodate the breast implant.

Breast augmentation surgery will require an hour to two hours to complete. The incisions will be closed using stitches, though bandages, tape, and gauze may be applied for support and to assist with healing.

After Breast Augmentation Surgery

At The Plastic Surgery Center of Nashville in Tennessee, the breast augmentation surgeon and our staff will monitor your progress after surgery. In order to remove excess fluid, drainage tubes may be inserted for several days. You may feel tired and sore for a few days after breast augmentation surgery, but you should be mobile in one to two days. Gauze and surgical dressing will be removed within a few days, at which time you may change to a soft cup bra. Any sutures that do not dissolve on their own will be removed in seven to 10 days. During the first two weeks, your nipples may experience a burning sensation. This will subside as post-surgical bruising begins to fade. Swelling after breast augmentation surgery may persist for three to five weeks with implants placed under the breast gland. In breast augmentation where the implants are placed under the muscle, swelling may persist significantly longer, approximately three to five months.

Recovery

Most patients return to work a few days after breast augmentation surgery, depending on the amount of activity their job requires. During the first two to three weeks, your breasts will be very sensitive to direct stimulation. If your breasts are no longer sore after three to four weeks, breast contact should be fine. No heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling with the upper body is recommended for at least two weeks after breast augmentation surgery. We discourage any activity that causes an increase in your heart rate or blood pressure for the first two weeks. After breast augmentation surgery, the surgical scars will appear pink and firm for six weeks. The surgical scars may appear to widen or remain the same size for several months. They will eventually fade, though they will not disappear completely. If you should experience any serious complications during your recovery period, contact our Nashville, Tennessee office to speak with a breast augmentation surgeon.

Potential Risks

At our cosmetic surgery office in Nashville, Tennessee, we perform breast augmentation surgery often, and usually achieve excellent results. Yet, as with other types of surgery, there are a number of potential risks.

One of the more common complications following breast augmentation surgery is called capsular contracture, which occurs when the capsule or scar around a breast implant tightens, causing a woman’s breast to feel abnormally hard. The condition is treatable. Other complications after breast augmentation surgery that may require a second operation include excessive bleeding or infection. Oversensitive, undersensitive, or numb nipples are other infrequent but possible complications.

There is a chance that a breast implant will break. If a saline breast implant leaks or breaks, the implant will drain completely within a few hours and your body will absorb the salt water harmlessly. If a silicone gel-filled implant breaks, you may not detect the leak if the scar tissue around the breast implant remains intact. If the scar tissue does break or tear, however, the silicone gel may migrate into the surrounding tissue. If a saline or silicone implant breaks, you will require a second operation to replace the leaking implant. If your implant breaks, contact our office in Nashville, Tennessee to speak with a breast augmentation surgeon.

Some breast augmentation patients have experienced symptoms of arthritis-like conditions and immune system diseases. As of now, researchers have found no clear link between symptoms of connective-tissue disorders and silicone breast implants. The FDA is currently conducting further studies on the matter.

Though current evidence does not show a link between breast augmentation surgery and breast cancer, breast implants can alter the way a mammography is performed in order to detect breast cancer. Trained radiologists will need to perform special displacement techniques as breast implants may obscure breast tissue on some views.

Solitary Confinement – for Life

Sixty-five year old Arthur Jones served a self-imposed life sentence – in his own home.

Arthur lived in a high crime neighborhood, so he built iron cages around his doors doors and installed bars on all the windows. No one could find it easy to break in to Arthur's house!

I met Arthur a few years ago, although you would hardly call our interaction meeting. When I arrived to deliver his meal, as part of the Meals-on-Wheels program, Arthur barely cracked open his front door even though his cage was clearly protected him. He refused to open the cage door at all, so, to give him his meal, I had to angle the box through the bars. Without doubt, this maneuver surmounted the hot contents of his boxed meal, but Arthur would have it no other way. He clearly feared me, a 100-pound woman, and everyone else.

I wish I could say that Arthur's family came to his rescue, finding for him the medical and emotional treatment he needed. I can not. Arthur's depression and paranoia compounded relentlessly, killing him at far too young an age.

Many elders live like Arthur, holed up in their own homes, barricaded against the world. Who cares? Family and friends must care, and they must assume the primary responsibility, acting before their elder's condition rivals that of Arthur. We can not shift this burden to our government. We can not wish it away. Those among us lucky enough to have elders in our lives must shoulder the responsibility of seeing that they do not succumb to depression.

At this holiday season, many elders experience transitory depression, as celebrations bring memories of friends and loved ones who have died. Decreased hours of sunshine may add to their depressed feelings. How do you know if your elder sufferers from serious depression? And, if you suspect depression, what you should do? Here are a few tips.

What signs should lead you to suspect serious depression?

  • Lethargy and or refusal to get out of bed;
  • Changes in Sleep Patterns, such as sleeping all morning
  • Unusual Complaints
  • Memory loss and loss of ability to concentrate
  • Frequent sighs or wiping if unusual for the sufferer
  • Feeling fear and loneliness;
  • Thoughts of death
  • Refusal to eat
  • Refusal to take prescribed medicines
  • Thoughts or talk of suicide (remember, the notification that suicides do not signal their plans is a myth!)
  • Significant changes in personality
  • Irritability

What Can You Do?

A few simple steps may improve their condition quickly:

  • Call more often than usual.
  • Take your elder for outings away from the house.
  • Schedule a medical appointment to confirm or deny your suspicions, and be the one to take your elder to that appointment. Depression often accompanies the early stages of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.
  • Check bottles to be certain that your elder is actually taking prescribed medications at the recommended dosages. Too many or too few pills in the bottle can warn you of problems. If you find evidence that medications are not taken as prescribed, gently probe to see if you can learn why.
  • Including the elder in parties and holiday festivals, but keep the duration of their participation at a level they can handle comfortably.
  • Drop in more often than usual on homebound elders.

You do not have to be a doctor or social worker to recognize the signs of depression. Take action now to protect those who protected you.

Leptospirosis in Dogs – Your Dog's Risk, Symptoms, & Cures

Leptospirosis (Lepto for short) is a bacterial disease that can infect both humans and dogs. The disease is transmitted by contact with fluids from infected animals.

In dogs, transmission most commonly occurring by drinking puddle, pond, or ditch water that is contaminated by the urine from infected wildlife; such as skunks, squirrels, and raccoons.

The body organs most commonly affected by the disease are the liver and kidneys. Lepto can be fatal without proper treatment.

Warning Signs & Treatment of Lepto

  • Fever
  • Weight Loss
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle Tenderness, Pain
  • Bloody Urine
  • Jaundice (yellowing of gums, skin, etc …)

Your veterinarian will perform blood and urine tests to confirm Leptospirosis disease. If that is the case, the aim will be to control the infection before irreparable damage occurs to the dog's kidneys or liver. Treatment, if caught in time, can be successful with antibiotics and fluid therapy.

Prevention of Leptospirosis in Dogs

Prevention of Lepto comes in the form of vaccines. However, the vaccines available to protect our dogs from the disease can only protect them against some, but not all the strains of Lepto.

This leaves many of us wondering … to vaccinate or not to vaccinate?

If your dog is a high-risk dog … ie. a dog that spends a lot of time in woody areas or roams freely in rural areas, you probably should consider custody. Now knowing how a dog is infected, be sure to eliminate your dog's access to potential sources which could have contaminated with infected urine.

If you are considering having your dog vaccinated for Lepto, remember that vaccines can also be harmful to our dogs causing serious side effects or placing other health risks. A thorough discussion and evaluation of your dog's risk of being infected should be discussed with your veterinarian.
