Chronic Low Back Pain Treatment – Guidelines For Treating Back Pain Problems

There are plenty of treatments that can be chosen, at a number of different costs, and they all give you the same results. That makes it important that the chronic low back pain treatments have some guidelines behind them.

The American Pain Society and the American College of Physicians have worked together and released a set of guidelines that is complete, and tells the doctor what to do for patients that have chronic low back pain.

One necessary thing is stating the cause of the back pain and putting it in the exact category where it’s located, like back pain caused by a congenital condition like scoliosis, or pain caused by mechanical reasons, such as nerve roots, facet joints, disc, traverse process, spinous process or vertebra.

Some other types include tumours, infections and diseases that are not caused by injuries.

Something else that these new guidelines state is that X-rays should have a clear statement of the criteria behind their use before they’re done on a patient. According to the guidelines, the type of the back pain that the patient suffers from should be specified, as well as the causes behind it.

Also, the chronic low back pain treatment rules say that the types of medicine prescribed need to be specified, together with the course of treatment chosen for each patient, according to the back pain nature.

Whatever type of treatment is chosen, whether it’s massage, alternative, prescription, physical therapy or prescription, it should be chosen based on the causes of each back pain and symptoms.

If doctors will use the guidelines for chronic low back pain treatment as they are intended, chances for a treatment that is successful from its early stages are increased. Another good side effect will be that people will go through a smaller number of treatments until they are cured.

Also, it will cost much less to heal a patient with low back pain treatment, if these guidelines will be respected. Since health care costs increase every year, these guidelines will insure a much needed relief for authorities and patients.

Male Sexual Health – Premature Ejaculation & Erectile Dysfunction

Awareness of male health and sexual issues has increased dramatically over the last few years. Men now openly seek advice for problems like impotence, low libido, premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, and penis size. Most of these conditions are related, and often the symptoms may point to more than one problem.

Premature Ejaculation

Simply put, premature ejaculation is a condition where a man reaches orgasm before he desires. It becomes a problem if your partner needs you to stay erect for a longer period than what you’re able to maintain. Premature ejaculation is quite a common problem and is seen in about 30% of the men across the world. Many sexologists often identify a primary or secondary stage:

  • A man has primary premature ejaculation if he has been suffering from this problem since he has been sexually active.
  • A man has secondary premature ejaculation when he develops the condition after having had past successful sexual encounters without any ejaculation problems.

The condition is usually caused by a combination of over-sensitiveness of the glans penis (i.e. penis head), and jitteriness or performance anxiety. An episode of premature ejaculation often leads to further occurrences.

Premature ejaculation may also be linked to erectile dysfunction. In such cases, the treatment plan needs to focus on erectile dysfunction as the primary problem.

Regular exercise improves cardiovascular health and blood flow across the body, including genitals. Deep breathing, pranayama aasana and other yoga are great ways to prevent premature ejaculation.

One of the best known exercises is the Kegel exercise, as it helps in strengthening the pelvic muscles.

Herbal remedies containing the ancient Himalayan herb shilajit is also beneficial.

The symptoms of erectile dysfunction are generally the result of some other underlying problem. Such underlying health ailments could be either psychological or physical. Diseases, hormonal impairments and neurological ailments could all trigger erectile dysfunction. Depression and anxiety can also trigger erectile dysfunction.

The obvious symptoms are common: inability to produce or sustain a complete or partial erection. The penis is unable to retain the blood in its chambers and therefore, does not stand straight.

Some of the physical causes of are:

  • Fatigue or exhaustion during or before sexual activities
  • Excessive alcohol and/or tobacco consumption
  • Liver or kidney impairment
  • Any chronic illness
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Some kind of prostate or bladder surgeries
  • Radiation therapy, especially if performed on and around genitals
  • Brain or spinal-cord injuries
  • Hypogonadism (that can lead to lower testosterone levels)
  • Any hormonal imbalance, especially male sex hormones
  • Any sort of stroke
  • Medication

Some of the health care providers also believe that there are three major health ailments that generally result into erectile dysfunction namely;

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of the blood vessels, arteries)

Car Tune Up

A tune up is a simple task that almost anyone can do. This will make your vehicle more fuel efficient. This applies for any motorized vehicle. The filters are a good place to start. Depending how often you do a tune up will affect how much of an improvement that you will see. Most mechanics suggest a tune up by 60,000 miles.

The engine air filter can be your first tune up item. The air filter is located over a carburetor on older cars. The air filter is in the airbox on fuel injected motors. The fuel filter can be located anywhere between your engine and the fuel tank and should also be replaced. If the fuel filter is clogged it can make your engine run lean.

Many times if your light engine light has been on it is due to the o2 sensor not working correctly. This is normally only replaced when it fails but usually will not last long anyways. Now is also a good time to have your transmission filter replaced. If the transmission filter has a lot of miles on it the transmission could be slipping.

Replacing this may need to be done by a mechanic, unless you feel comfortable enough to it. The filter is usually found under the transmission pan. The transmission filter will typically pull straight down and out. Without you have the scarce, screw on filter like saturns.

The ignition system is also very important and requires attention. The spark plug wires will usually wear out even faster than the 60,000 mile tune up. Try half that mileage and it will save you money and troubles. Spark plug wires wear out and lose resistance, making the car run rough and use more fuel. While replacing the spark plug wires it is also a good idea to replace the distributor cap and rotor.

The engine's distributor cap will come off easy, usually with two screws. It may be easiest to remove the distributor cap first to keep the wires running to the correct spark plug. When the cap is removed, the rotor will be located under it and usually has a push in tab to release it. Reinstall the new distributer cap and proceed to remove one spark plug wire only.

Now it is time to replace the spark plugs. The spark plugs will usually come out with a 5/8 "or 13/16" socket. Replace the spark plug with a new compatible plug. Check the gap with a feel gauge and tap on or pry the electrode back in until you have the gap the size it needs to be. Most engines run the spark plug gap between .030 "and .045" depending on the vehicle.

Now refer to the wire set up on the old distributor cap. Trace the one wire back to where it needs to be on the new cap. Do this to all the wire and plugs so that they can not be mixed up. The ignition timing should also be checked by connecting a timing light to # 1 spark plug wire. The timing setting should be around 8 to 12 degrees advanced or zero on newer cars.

The actual timing spec, along with the spark plug gap, will be displayed under the hood on a tag. Also if excess oil was found in the air filter, you should replace the PCV (positive crankcase valve) which will usually be found in the head, valve cover or air cleaner / box. If there is no oil in the air filter then the PCV valve is ok This will return your car to the factory oem specs and will probably improve the power, smoothness and fuel economy.

Guide to Downloading Movies and Music Online

After searching the internet for months, trying out various movie and music download websites and being disappointed with the results I've come up with some advice. I do not want to see anyone else get scammed by false advertising websites claiming to have millions of movies, music and video game downloads. When it comes down to it, you do not really know what you are getting until you try. I have tried, made mistakes, but have also gained valuable knowledge about the valid websites out there. Below are some findings and tips to help guide you on your own search: Stick to organic search results. When you type in a search phrase such as "download movies online" into Google you will notice dozens of paid links to your right. While some may be reputable companies, many are just landing pages referring media websites to make a big commission. These websites often offer very little new movie content, but make their money off the unknowing public.

Watch out for extremely low prices: Websites off a $ 9.99 one time fee for unlimited movie, music and video game downloads is clearly not giving you quality downloads. Sure it's cheap, but you get what you pay for. Yes, they have thousands of movies, but who wants to watch no name movies from the 1980s?

Look for reputable websites. By that I mean media website that is not heavy on flash content, not just one large image and has a limited amount of banners. Be weary of pop ups from other websites that are trying to advertise cheap movie downloads. Often times it will lead you to an unrated website or a cheap vendor.

Do a search for "reviewed movie download websites." Many authors and users, such as myself, have created the websites to review the best companies to download media from. Like myself many people are tired of being scammed by all of the advertisements bombarding you each day. Read their reviews carefully and make and educated decision for yourself. People will go out of their way way to spread the word about a good website, just like they will about a poor website.

Find a website specific to what you are looking for. Rather than look for a website that claims to have it all, look for a category specific company such as movies, music or video games. At least look for a website that specializes in one of those categories. Such as offering an assortment of movies, but also giving you access to music and video games. You will greatly increase your chances of finding quality movies or vise versa.

Following the above tips will make you more aware as a consumer and lead you to the ideal website to download media.

I have also listed a review of the media download websites that are most affordable, offer the largest selection at my website below.

Fiber Rich Diet For Weight Loss & Healthy Digestive System

A healthy diet is a balance of good nutrition, calories, vitamins, and fiber. Fiber by definition is the part of plant foods that is not digestible but necessary for us because it moves foods through our digestive system. Our daily fiber requirement is 25-30 grams. An average person gets only 5-8 dietary grams of fiber in a day. This article will show you how easy it is to add fiber to your diet.

Low fiber diets increase the risk of disease including colon cancer, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Other health issues you may experience are hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease, high cholesterol, weight gain, and constipation. Just by making a few changes in your diet you can help to eliminate the possibility of these problems.

Obesity or being over weight is less likely when your diet includes the right amount of fiber for two reasons. Fiber fills you up and the process of normal healthy digestion burns up calories. This is why fiber rich diets are a key to weight loss success.

Increasing fiber in your diet is easy. Most fruits, beans, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, berries, and dried fruits are fiber rich foods. Substituting fresh fruit, veggies, dried fruit, or nuts in place of a high calorie packed snack is a smart way to improve your diet. Replace white bread with a loaf made of whole grains and do the same with pasta and white rice. You may be pleasantly surprised how tasty wheat pasta and brown rice are. Another good idea is selecting fresh fruit over juice because it has more fiber and fewer calories.

There are two types of fiber. Soluble fiber dissolves in water forming a gel-like substance helping to lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels. Foods with this type of fiber include oats, peas, beans, apples, citrus fruits, carrots, and psyllium seed husk which is an ingredient often found in high fiber breakfast cereals. Insoluble fiber does not break down and is roughage increasing stool bulk that moves material through the digestive system. Foods containing this fiber are whole wheat flour, wheat bran, nuts, and many vegetables.

Examples of Fiber Rich Foods

Fruits- oranges, cherries, apples & pears w/ skins, tomatoes w/ skins, and bananas

Dried fruits- figs, apricots, dates, raisins, and prunes

Vegetables- onions, cauliflower, broccoli, sweet corn, carrots, spinach, kale, beet greens, collard, baked potatoes with skin, green beans, canned & fresh pumpkin, brussels sprouts, artichokes, zucchini, celery, sweet potatoes, and turnip greens

Legume Family- soybeans, peas, lentils, chickpeas, and beans

Berries- blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries

Oats, rye, chia, and barley

Grains, whole grain foods, and bran

Nuts(although a great source of fiber, careful nuts are high in fat and calories)

Popcorn (air popped)

With a fiber rich diet it is important to increase fluids 8-10 glasses per day. This will aid digestion and support good colon health. I recommend water as a first choice but juice, decaffeinated tea & coffee, and low fat milk are other good picks. Note the list does not include soda pop, energy drinks, sport drinks, or alcohol. Increasing daily fiber should be gradual or you may experience diarrhea, intestinal gas, bloating, and cramping. It will take you a few weeks to make the necessary changes and learn how to read the labels on food products at the grocery store. I am certain your time and efforts will pay off with notable changes to your health.

The Best Los Angeles Acne Treatment Method

You can walk down any street in Los Angeles and see people who are suffering from debilitating acne. Acne can be embarrassing and eventually lead to self esteem damaging scars if left untreated. So just what is the best Los Angeles acne treatment method?

Well, what it’s not is squeezing those zits on your face. The absolute worst thing you can do if you get a pimple is to try to “pop” it. This will inevitably release the infection, and you will end up with more blemishes that you started out with. Not to mention, it tears up your skin, and will lead to noticeable scars.

The best Los Angeles acne treatment method is pretty straight forward. You really need to start with a healthy diet. Certain foods are said to cause acne, but have never been proven. Eating a lot of chocolate or greasy foods are one of the myths associated with the cause of acne.

Drinking lots of water will help to prevent the occurrence of acne, but water alone will not keep you from breaking out. Your hormones are really to blame for your breakouts. When your hormones are out of whack, you may produce excess oil in you skin. This is really the cause of acne because the oils allow the bacteria to gain access to your pores. Once the bacteria gets into your pores, your body sends enzymes to fight it. This causes your face to break out in little pustules known as pimples.

The best Los Angeles acne treatment is actually made up of several methods for the treatment of acne because truthfully, everyone’s skin is different. Some are home remedies such as a paste made of honey and cinnamon, while others are over the counter creams to apply to your face. You can find many over the counter medications at your local stores, or even at any Los Angeles pharmacies.

If none of these Los Angeles acne treatment methods have worked for you in the past, it may be necessary to consult a doctor. There are many doctors and dermatologists in the Los Angeles area that specialize in the treatment of acne. You can find them by searching the internet, or thumbing through the yellow pages. Once you visit with the doctor, he or she will be able to prescribe you the medication that you need to treat your acne.

Dry Skin on the Penis: 7 Common Causes and How to Treat Them

Finding dry skin on the penis can definitely cause anxiety for any man. A patch of dry skin can bring some of the worst-case scenarios to mind! Luckily, most causes of dry penile skin are commonplace and easy to remedy. At worst, a man can expect a little discomfort as the skin heals and returns to its smooth natural state. Here are a few of the most reported causes of dry skin on the penis and how to treat them.

1) Harsh Soaps –. Penis skin is very delicate, and harsh soaps can lead to dryness and irritation. Harsh soaps containing sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS), lye, polypropylene, and triclosan should be avoided at all costs. Use just water or a gentle soap like baby shampoo to gently clean the area.

2) Allergies — Allergies to lotions, condoms, spermicide, laundry detergents, certain fabrics, or other personal care products have been known to cause dry skin on the penis. Other associated symptoms of allergy include sneezing, a runny nose, wheezing, and watery eyes.

3) Chafing – Too tight pants, underwear, or shorts can cause chafing, leading to irritation and dry skin. Be sure not to make things around the groin too tight to avoid chafing. Also, wear breathable, soft fabrics so that the area doesn’t get too moist, or it will attract bacteria.

4) Yeast Infection – Yeast infections can cause not only cause dry penile skin but also manifest a rash, swelling around the head of the penis, thick discharge under the foreskin, and white patches on the skin. It can also be quite painful to have sex or urinate. Use an over-the-counter anti-fungal cream on the head of the penis (and under the foreskin if uncircumcised) until symptoms are gone. Abstain from masturbation and sex until the infection is completely clear.

5) Eczema – Eczema is a common skin problem where the skin is dry, inflamed, or irritated.Treat the area with an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream as directed by a pharmacist or doctor. Be sure to moisturize the area daily and after any contact with water to minimize additional drying.

6) Psoriasis – Psoriasis is a skin disease which causes red, scaly patches on the skin. Thankfully it isn’t hazardous or contagious. See a doctor or dermatologist for a prescription cortisone cream to treat the affected area. A crème with vitamins A and E for regular moisturizing is also helpful.

7) Dry Sex or Masturbation – Prolonged sexual activity without adequate lubrication can cause dry skin on the penis. Using a lubricant for sex or masturbation can prevent dryness and make it more pleasurable. Lubricants come in three formulations: water-based, oil-based, and silicone-based. Water-based lubricants are least likely to cause irritation. Be sure that the lubricant is also safe to use with condoms for the safest sex.

Practice Good Penile Care for Health

Regardless of the source of the problem, good penile grooming habits can go a long way in reducing irritation and dry skin on the penis. Be sure to wash the penis every day using gentle pressure and a gentle cleanser. Moisturize the penis regularly to keep it smooth and supple. Keep the groin area dry and wear breathable fabrics so as to discourage moisture and bacteria, and opt for looser pants or at least fitted pants in lieu of tight trousers.

When it comes to moisturizing delicate penis skin, a specially formulated penis health crème (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil, which has been clinically proven safe and mild for skin) should be used. Nutrient creams that are made explicitly for the penis should encompass ingredients such as vitamins A, C, D, and E, which are well-known for their skin-soothing and rejuvenating properties. Men should also select a product containing a natural emollient such as Shea butter, which repairs dry skin and returns it to its originally smooth state.

Fear Of Flying: Terrorism And Fear Of Flying After 9/11

Do you know anyone with a fear of flying? In my clinical hypnotherapy practice, I’ve seen a huge increase in nervous flyers. Many of these have developed a fear of flying since 9/11. And many more have a fear of “flying terrorism”.

Many people have developed an outright fear of flying phobia because they have a perception that flying is more dangerous than before 9/11.

Of course it is important to ask, “How ‘real’ is this threat and how can you overcome it?”

The first thing is get into perspective: 9/11 was a unique and terrifying experience. Most of the folk who died as a result of it were not flying at the time. They were innocent office workers, surprised by the attack on the twin towers. They were on the ground.

It is also important to look at what happened as a result of 9/11. The fear of flying terrorism caused lead to a huge increase in airport security. As a British citizen travelling to the United States, I have been interrogated at length several times on why I am entering the country (when I was clearly on holiday or there for hypnosis trainings).

Police presence at airports has increased now, and any bags that are left unattended are quickly labelled “suspicious packages.” So you can be assured that, not only is passenger aircraft safety a priority, but the security measures are more stringent than ever.

Fear of flying terrorism or a fear of a repeat of 9/11 is understandable but does not bear up to the facts.

That’s why the next step for any person serious about getting over their fear of flying phobia is to gather quality information:

  • What is the real safety record of airplanes?
  • How secure are airports?
  • What sort of rigorous training do pilots undergo?
  • Did you know they can land a plane safely, even if the engines cut out?
  • Did you know that airplanes now have bullet-proof doors to prevent terrorists getting inside?
  • Did you know that pilots have a security camera so they can see if it is safe to open the door to the cock-pit?

The sad fact that is that when I was a boy, you could go and visit the pilot in the cockpit. Now security is so tight that it simply is not allowed.

Once you know the real facts, it becomes easier to face your fear for what it is: False Expectations Appearing Real.

It is true that, at this moment in time, there is genuine concern about the security of cargo planes. Experts are concerned these could be used as missiles in the same way as 9/11. One reason is probably because passenger aircraft are subject to so many security measures that it is would be very difficult for terrorists to gain the upper hand. So they are not likely to try to compromise commercial airlines: they are simply too well protected.

Since 9/11 some people have behaved almost to the point of paranoia. One story goes that a plane was forced to land because the flight crew saw a discarded sickness bag with the letters BOB on it. They interpreted it to mean “Bomb on Board”. The mind can play tricks on you. But you can overcome this with a good fear of flying book or clinical hypnotherapy sessions.

Fear of flying terrorism should not put you off flying. Airplanes are safer than ever. In the United States, flights often have an Air Marshall on board. His job is to serve and protect during the flight.

Fear of flying after 9/11 has lead to many more people developing a fear and phobia of flying. In my clinical practice, I help folk deal with the unconscious triggers that are causing this. With fear of flying, terrorism is an irrational worry that is blown out of proportion. Once a person is helped to see that, to understand the true facts about safety, then they can use the power of their mind to overcome a fear of flying.

Overcoming Driving Anxiety – Three Effective Strategies

A person suffering from driving anxiety or fear of driving is likely to be looking for a quick fix because this problem can have a very serious impact on quality of life. Here are three ways that can be used to relate many of the physical and emotional symptoms that are typical of driving phobia.

1.) Affirmation is a very strong tool to use to eliminate driving anxiety. Simply put, affirmation is the process of telling one's self positive things. This can be done out loud or simply in thought. Let's take the example of a person who is fearful of driving at night. Chances are, the person is already engaged in some form of negative affirmation as in: "I have to drive tonight and I know I will have a panic attack." Instead of this internal dialog the substitute and opposite thought should be verbalized: "I have to drive tonight and I know that I will be fine – I will be calm and I will be able to handle the situation in a normal way.

2.) Imaging is similar to affirmation but instead of being a verbal process, it is a visual one. The sufferer takes the feared situation (ie driving at night) and imagines a scene where he or she is at the wheel, driving in the dark and experiencing no fear. Sometimes conjuring up an image of whistling a happy tune while driving or simply picturing a smile on the driver's face.

3.) Relaxation techniques can involve progressive muscle relaxation techniques or deep breathing techniques to eliminate driving anxiety. These techniques can be learned and used to overcome fear of driving and have been used for centuries in the practice of natural pain control (as in childbirth) and other situations where a 'mind over matter' technique would be useful.

Too Old To Learn Scuba Diving?

We are always told we should learn sports when we are young, when our bodies are more resilient to the bruises and bumps which can be afflicted on us when we learn a new sport. This is true to a certain extent.

Take for example, my experience learning wind surfing. I learnt the sport when I was 26. If I were to learn this sport now at age 42, chances are I would not go far and would probably give up after 1 or 2 tries. Learning wind surfing was like battling with all the forces at the same time! We’re talking about trying to balance on choppy waves on a slippery wet board, at the same time maneuvering a sail which weighs more than you in the correct direction that you want to go.In the process, I contributed blood and flesh from cuts on barnacles and bruises from hitting the surf board more than once before falling into the waters.

But there is a huge difference with scuba diving. YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN SCUBA DIVING. I can never say this enough. I learnt scuba diving when I was 38. Now I’m not saying that 38 is a ripe old age but still, the body does feel somewhat less strong and less resilient. Added to that, as we get older, we also seem to have more fears. Perhaps we feel we have more to lose if something should happen to us.

I say middle age and beyond should never be a factor in learning scuba diving BUT you do need to have these:

1) an intense love for the sea

2) a willingness to learn from someone younger than you

3) relatively good health and lastly but very important

4) time and money

Now I’m assuming that you are thinking of learning scuba diving because you want to make this a sport that you can enjoy every other weekend if time and money permits and not just learning for education’s sake.

An Intense Love for the Sea

To enjoy a scuba diving trip, you will have to love the sea and I mean really really love it with all its wonderful creatures large and small. You will know what I mean on your first ever scuba diving trip after you have cleared your Open Water tests.

It is unlikely that your scuba diving buddies on your first dive trip will be the same classmates in your scuba diving course. Because of time and money constraints, you will find that you may be the only one keen enough to join a scuba diving trip soon after your certification.

More often than not, your dive buddies will be a dive-crazy bunch who will do at least 4 dives a day plus another at night. This means that on a scuba diving trip, most times you will not do anything but dive, talk about the sea creatures and encounters of each dive, before suiting up for the next dive. For someone who only wants to do one dive a day and then go shopping, he/she may be disappointed as many great scuba diving spots have few of these shopping and entertainment facilities.

In case you are already getting stressed just thinking about this, don’t be. Every scuba diving newbie goes through this. Just have an attitude of a newbie, be humble and you will find that the seasoned divers are more than willing to share tips and may even help you to gear up before a dive.

A Willingness to Learn from Someone Younger than You

Your scuba diving instructor is likely to be someone much younger than you. Some dive instructors have an attitude and are cocky so you may have to live with it for at least 3 weekends before you become certified – 1st weekend for classroom and theory, 2nd weekend for pool sessions and a 3rd weekend for the actual open water tests. Put aside your ego and just bear with it, it’ll be worth it in the end.

Having said that, that’s not to say that there are no good and kind scuba diving instructors around. I was fortunate to receive dive instruction from PC, a very kind and patient man, without whom my dive learning experience would not be as smooth and enjoyable.

Relatively Good Health

It’s not necessary to be in peak fitness before you can take up scuba diving. However, you would need some strength to be able to walk with full scuba diving gear strapped on you. Once you enter the waters with all your gear, you are almost weightless. But it’s the few steps you have to make to get into the boat or to cross the beach into the water that may be a challenge for a person who is not used to carrying heavy loads on them.

Having said that, some scuba diving resorts have fantastic dive staff who can help to overcome this by carrying the tanks and gear to the boat for you to suit up inside the boat. And of course if you are on a live-a-board (live, eat, dive, sleep, on board a boat throughout the dive trip), then this may not be relevant.

Time and Money

This is probably the 2 most deciding factors of whether someone continues to enjoy scuba diving after passing the Open Water tests. Getting certified through a scuba diving course is very fast, just 3 weekends basically. And not too expensive, probably about $300 to $400, including an out-of-the country dive trip for the open water tests. But unless you live near a scuba diving area, you are most likely going to have to travel a distance or even out of the country to do a good dive.

Now just think how much each trip is going to cost you and multiply that by how many times you would love to do scuba diving in a year. When you do the sums, it can be staggering. So you cut down the number of dives you want to do in a year, and then calculate and cut down some more.

In our scuba diving class, my husband and I were the only ones who continued to dive after the class was over. Even then, we did not manage to do the number of dives we would really have loved to do in a year. That’s how it finally ends up that we are doing an average of 1 dive a year. This more or less ensures that we will always be diving as a “scuba diving newbie” (hence the blog’s name). A scuba diver gets “rusty” when the interval is too long between each dive trip. Ideally, we should dive at least once each quarter.

I have not even gone on to calculate the other “investments” to personalise your gear such as your own BC (buoyancy control), your own octopus (breathing appartus) and your wet suit.

Having said all this, I still believe it’s never too old to learn and enjoy scuba diving. Even with our limited dives since we were certified and diving as scuba diving newbies, we enjoy each and every one of our dive trips. Find the right people to dive with, find a fantastic dive spot that suits your preferences (whether macro, to check out small sea creatures, or see bigger fish) and nearby spa facilities to sooth your body aches after a dive – it’s a wonderful combination that will almost always ensure a great scuba diving experience!

A scuba diving newbie can still enjoy happy diving!

10 Most Common Neurosurgery Procedures

Trained to operate on the brain, spinal cord, and other intricate structures of the human nervous system, neurosurgeons undergo what is arguably the most rigorous training program in all of medicine. In addition to four years of college and four years of medical school, a neurosurgery student must complete at least six years of residency. By the time he or she finally becomes a licensed neurosurgeon, they will have spent a minimum of 14 years in school! What happens then?

Also known as brain surgeons, neurosurgeons actually spend most of their time working on the spine. As you will see from the following examples of common neurosurgery procedures, most are incredibly complicated, which is why neurosurgeons spend a good deal of their lives in training.

Anterior Cervical Discectomy

Just about everyone experiences neck pain at some point in his or her lives. But when a herniated disc causes the pain, it is often unbearable and may require surgery. A common but delicate procedure, surgeons go in from the front during an anterior cervical discectomy and remove the damaged disc that is pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord.

Chiari Decompression

Although uncommon, an Arnold-Chiari malformation is a defect in the part of the brain that controls balance. As such, it must be corrected for the patient to see an improvement in balance and coordination. While there are several legitimate treatment options, all of them involve surgery. One of the simplest and therefore safest neurosurgery options is the Chiari decompression, which entails removing the bone at the back of the skull.

Countless victims of traumatic brain injury and stroke have been saved with this simple procedure in which part of the skull is removed to give a swelling brain the space it needs to expand without being crushed.

Epilepsy Surgery

When epileptics do not respond to pharmacological treatment, surgical options must be considered. The most common procedures involve removing the portion of the brain that is producing uncontrollable and potentially fatal seizures.

A minimally invasive operation, a laminectomy requires only small incisions in the skin that are used to access and remove a part of the vertebral bone called the lamina. Also known as decompression surgery, the operation is quite common for people with severe chronic back pain.

Lumbar Puncture

A simple and effective test for a number of diseases of the central nervous system, the lumbar puncture (or spinal tap) is most commonly used for diagnosing meningitis.

Probably the most popular neurosurgery procedure, a microdiscetomy is used to treat patients with painful herniated discs in the lumbar region.

Spinal Fusion

Whether the patient is suffering from a degenerative disease or a traumatic injury, spinal fusion is a major surgical procedure that is used to keep the spine stable when there is no other option.

Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt

Used to treat patients with hydrocephalus, the operation involves the implantation of a shunt that drains excess fluid and relieves pressure on the brain.

A less common alternative to shunt insertion for the treatment of hydrocephalus, a ventriculostomy utilizes a tube to drain fluid buildup in the brain.

Although this is merely a partial list of the procedures neurosurgeons perform regularly, it should give you a better understanding of what these doctors actually do.
