Type 1 Diabetes Is No Longer Classified As a Childhood Disease – It Now Affects People of All Ages

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, which is a disease that attacks the body's own cells. In type 1 diabetes, the body attacks and destroys the beta cells of the pancreas, the cells that are responsible for producing a hormone called insulin. Insulin is the hormone that lowers blood glucose levels, maintaining a proper balance between glucose and insulin in the bloodstream. If these pancreatic cells are destroyed, an individual will not be able to produce insulin and as a result high blood glucose levels (known as diabetes) occurrence.

Diabetes is not curable and as with all autoimmune diseases, it has not yet been determined exactly what causes it. However, according to the University of Maryland School of Medicine, inheritance plays a significant part and there may be an association in the development of type 1 diabetes and a virus.

The American Diabetes Association estimates that there are one to two million people who have Type 1 Diabetes. Why Our Children Will Die Too Soon

After decades of advancements in modern day medicine, why are mortality rates increasing in 2016? What good does it do when a child can’t drink high calorie beverages in school when their home refrigerator is full of sugar laden beverages?

I recently heard someone ask “what was the most important thing we can teach our children?’ The answer was to teach our children how to be when they leave us. In other words, prepare them for life when they’re out on their own. Remembering my early years as a parent, I knew my daughters were learning about life “through my eyes”. I was always aware of the responsibility I felt as a role model. And that is what I would hope would be at the top of the job description list of every parent, as a caring teacher of our children.

For today since this is an article about obesity and mortality rates, this is my plea to the parents of young children. The national focus encouraging healthier diets in public schools has placed a spotlight on America’s obesity crisis. Indeed, inaction on the matter will have startling results, including a lifespan for members of our newest generation from two to five years lower than that for the previous generation, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. Think about this for a moment-with all the medical advances our society has produced; this generation’s children will have life expectancies less than their parents. The glaring culprit is in my mind, fast food (I have never seen a child turn down a french fry), video games, and other screen activities that discourage physical activity.

And, whenever we hear about the high incidence of obesity, we’re reminded of today’s diabetes epidemic. In the U.S., diabetes affects tens of millions of Americans, costs some $174 billion a year, and ranks as the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. And studies indicate that the greatest risk factor for type 2 diabetes is being overweight, a characteristic shared by 85 percent of diabetics. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, nine in ten cases of type 2 diabetes could be prevented through exercise, healthier diets, smoking cessation, and other healthy behaviors. Even modest weight loss has been found to help people with diabetes achieve and sustain blood glucose control and live healthier, longer, and more active lives.

Complications from diabetes, as reported by the Defeat Diabetes Foundation, are legion. Most troubling, in my opinion, is that diabetes sufferers are 65 percent more likely than their peers to develop Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, high proportions of people with diabetes incur damage to their nervous system, including carpal tunnel syndrome and impaired sensation in their feet or hands. And people with diabetes are two to four times more likely than others to develop heart disease and six times more likely to suffer a stroke. Not surprisingly, people with diabetes live an average of six fewer years than their nondiabetic peers. All this from a condition that more often than not can be prevented by reducing consumption of the sugar, carbohydrates, and processed foods so prevalent in the American diet.

Point being, parents of young children in the U.S. need to fully acknowledge and understand the health risks their children are facing today and in the years to come. They’re facing the challenge of being overweight and the increased chances of becoming a child diabetic. A young diabetic today will face a 65% greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in their later years. Moreover, a diabetic lives six years less than non-diabetics. Diabetic children have a much greater health disparity than people without disabilities.

The message is very loud and clear. But it must be heard, understood, accepted and acted upon! The key to good parenting begins with loving our children yet we must take it one step further. We need to start with accepting that we control how long our children will live. We hold their mortality in the palm of our hands. When we pacify them with French fries and sugary drinks, WE ARE GUARANTEEING to help shorten their life span. They’ll die too soon and long after we’re gone. As we age, the natural lubricants in our bodies that surround the joints tend to break down, and the sensitive areas can become inflamed and painful. One of the most common examples of this aging related medical condition is known as Trochanteric bursitis and it directly affects the hip joint. Limited movement is only one of the symptoms of this incapacitating condition, one that is also thankfully treatable.

Symptoms

Trochanteric bursitis will usually begin with feelings of tenderness and pain on the outside of the hip joint, and the skin may feel a bit warm to the touch. Over time, the pain increases to the point of occurring every time that joint is moved, through walking, standing or even sitting for lengths of time. The pain will range from mild discomfort to jarring jolts of chronic pain that seem to have no relief, not even when lying down. Any pressure on the affected hip will cause pain, especially when lying on your side.

Causes

The cause of this condition can be from a wide variety of reasons. Blows to that particular hip bone could begin the problem, but more often than not the true cause lies in simple aging. As we age, our bodies begin to lose its natural lubricants that are stored in tiny sacs surrounding each joint, called bursa. As the bursa begins to weakened, they can become irritated by the movement of the joint they surround, and become swollen. Once they swell, the movement of the joint puts additional pressure on them, causing sometimes excruciating pain.

The most common complaint of patients of a certain age is pain in the hip, most often caused by this form of bursitis. Left untreated, it can quickly become debilitating, every step causing chronic pain, and limiting the range of movement, day by day. The only effective course of treatment will include methods to alleviate the pain, and reduce the inflammation of the bursa surrounding the outside of the hip. Seeing your doctor is the first step to take.

Diagnosis and treatment

Once the doctor has run the necessary tests and taken x-rays to determine whether the cause of the pain is actually this form of bursitis and not something similar like tendonitis, the next step is usually prescribing anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce the inflammation of the bursa. After that, patients with this condition are then sent to physical therapy sessions, where they will be taught various exercises to strengthen the muscles around the joint, reducing the pressure on the bursa, as well as regaining some flexibility and movement. Surgery is usually only considered after all else has failed.

Typical Exercises

The typical exercises done through physical therapy to combat this condition will concentrate on the four muscle groups that surround the hip bone. These are the gluteal muscles, the illiotibial band that connects the hip joint, the hip flexor muscles, and the hamstring. Stretches designed to rebuild strength, and add flexibility to these areas will be the main focus of any exercises undergone during this phase of treatment.

The first such exercise is for the gluteal area, and is called the gluteal stretch. Lying on the back, the knee that aligns with the injured hip is slowly rolled back towards the opposite shoulder, slowly stretching that muscle. Next, a stretching exercise designed for the illiotibial band is performed standing up. This muscle runs from the side of the knee to the hip, so by extending the leg and crossing it gently to the opposite side, this band will become more flexible over time, and place less pressure on the inflated hip joint.

Simple forward and backward movements of the legs and knees, like those in gentle lunges will help to stretch both the hamstring, and the hip flexor muscles. All exercises to combat the effects of Trochanteric bursitis should be done safely, under the supervision of a physical therapist and if any pain is felt, stop them immediately, or risk worsening your condition.

My boyfriend and I decided to adopt a cat a year and a half ago; and despite the fact that I have allergies, living with a cat has not seemed to affect them too bad. However, the key to living with a pet while keeping your allergies at bay takes a little bit of work. For instance, cats are notorious for shedding hair. Even if you own a short haired cat, short haired cats are no different than long haired cats; they both shed. Shedding can be made worse by the fact that many homes and apartments are made with wall to wall carpeting. Not only is carpeting a nightmare for those with allergies, but when you throw pets into the mix, it can really drive you crazy.

The first step to cutting down on allergies while owning a pet comes down to grooming. As humans, every day, most of us brush our hair. By doing so, we are keeping our hair healthy and free from tangles, etc. Well, the same goes for your pet. While you may not need to brush your pet's coat every day, surely brushing your pet's coat every couple of days to once a week will help to cut down on the amount of pet dander (the thing that is making your allergies react) in your home . Contrary to popular belief, it is not your dog or cat's hair that is the problem. Rather, it is the dander- the stuff that is on their skin underneath their hair that is often aggravating to those who suffer from allergies. Numerous lights await the person who endured a dysfunctional or abusive upbringing, yet bores through the tunnel of recovery to reach them.

Powerless, devoid of understanding, and justifying his parent’s detrimental treatment of him because of his own alleged deficiencies, he reacted in ways that ensured his survival, causing his brain to rewire itself into survival tactic pathways so that he could negotiate an adult world he erroneously believed was the equivalent of his home-of-origin one.

Unable to function in such a debilitated state for long, however, but not entirely understanding his personal restrictions and fears, he may seek help and answers in a spiritual twelve-step program, enabling him to progressively regain what his upbringing forced him to lose, such as trust, a reconnection with positive, genuine feelings to enhance his life experiences, a re-established link with a Higher Power of his understanding, and, finally, a reknit with the rest of humanity, so that he no longer perceives himself to be on the outside, looking in.

Three aspects, all of which are interconnected, can be considered the goals of such a program.

The first of these is the determination of a person’s own interests, abilities, strengths, talents, and aspirations in life.

“By moving beyond survival,” according to the Adult Children of Alcoholics textbook (World Service Organization, 2006, p. 429), “we realize that lost dreams or wishes can re-emerge. The return of dreams is a signal that we are continuing our separation-from-family work. We learned… that we had internalized many aspects of our parents’ thinking and behaving. We had no real identity or dreams separate from them. Even if we had moved far away, our parents and their dysfunction still lived inside us.”

Indeed, adopting his parents’ own derailed life plan can be considered an example of a parent-child boundary loss, but his motivation for doing so may have been an effort to please them and a last-ditch attempt to attain their love.

The second goal is to become his own autonomous person beyond the boundary-poor projections, which caused him to subconsciously adopt his parent’s image of him by means of their distorted mirrors.

“Often one or more (family) members are dysfunctional in some capacity so other members take on their roles,” according to Dr. Charles L. Whitfield in his book, Healing the Child Within (Health Communications, 1987, p. 48). “Everyone learns to mind everyone else’s business one way or another. What results is a group of family members who are enmeshed, fused, or have invaded or even overtaken one another’s boundaries.”

“These enmeshed or fused relationships are generally unhealthy, closed, rigid, and tend to discourage the fulfillment of one another’s needs and rights,” he continued (p. 49). “They tend not to support the mental, emotional, and spiritual growth of each person. Little or no ebb and flow of closeness and distance is allowed.”

One of the major manifestations of a dysfunctional, alcoholic, and/or abusive upbringing is codependence, which can be defined as “a disease of lost selfhood.”

“The origin of codependence,” according to Whitfield in another of his books, Co-Dependence: Healing the Human Condition (Health Communications, 1991, p. 22), “is primarily due to having grown up in a troubled, unhealthy, or dysfunctional family.”

“Wounded themselves,” he later states (p. 27), “the child’s parents feel inadequate, bad, and unfulfilled. They project those charged feelings onto others, especially onto their spouse and their vulnerable children… They look outside themselves to feel whole.”

“When we focus so much outside of ourselves, we lose touch with what is inside of us,” he wrote (p. 3): “our beliefs, thoughts, feelings, decisions, choices, experiences, wants, sensations, intuitions, unconscious experiences, and even indications of our physical functioning… “

Identification of and reconnection with personal feelings is an important aspect of self-recovery.

“Since the parents and other members of such families tend themselves to be unable to listen to us, to support us, and to nurture, accept, and respect us,” he wrote in the Healing the Child Within book (p. 77), “we often have no one with whom we can share our feelings. The emotional pain hurts so much that we defend against them by… various unhealthy ego defenses… Doing so allows us to survive, although at a price. We become progressively numb. Out of touch. False. Codependent.”

The importance of feelings in a recovery program is not to be underestimated.

“(They) act as indicators or gauges at how we are doing at the moment and over a stretch of time” he concludes (p. 78). “They give us a sense of mastery and aliveness.”

Tantamount to the family separation needed to create a condition of autonomy is the replacement of a person’s physical parent with his virtual one-that is, of himself.

“By reparenting ourselves with gentleness, humor, love, and respect,” according to the Adult Children of Alcoholics textbook (p. 295), “we find our child within and true connection to a Higher Power.”

“(But) separation,” it also states (p. 430), “does not mean we are abandoning our family. It means we will have a separate identify. We will know where our feelings end and their feelings begin.”

That “inner child,” and releasing the shackles that once served as a protective sanctuary to retreat to, but later represented a prison, is the third major goal of recovery and facilitates the other two.

Deeply buried in a person’s psyche is the survival-sparked need for it, the long forgotten cocoon of the true self.

“The cause of codependence,” according to Whitfield in his Co-Dependence: Healing the Human Condition book (p. 27), “is a wounding of the true self to such an extent that to survive, it had to go into hiding most of the time, with the subsequent running of its life by the false or codependent self.”

Awaiting a person somewhere along his road to recovery is the rediscovery of his true or authentic self and its treasure chest of intrinsic worth, value, dreams, purposes, and love, the location of his personal direction, which was replaced early in life with his parents’ judgmental derailing. It is here where his critical inner parental voice exists and can now be replaced with his own affirming one.

The goal, in the end, of a spiritual twelve-step program is the reversal of the detrimental upbringing that caused an adult-child to lose himself very early in his life’s journey and replace it with the survival-necessitating false one.

Someone's cheery facial expression combined with high-quality lighting and a good lens can be a key ingredient in successful portrait shots.

You do not always require a studio to take high-quality portraiture. You can shoot portraits outdoors, or inside even if you do not have a professional photography studio. I have taken many photographs of clients in many assisted situations. They have all been slightly different portraits but they are still portrait photography. A different place does not signify they are not portraits.

So what are these diverse places and situations? I have shot photos of people on the stage, collecting their citizenship certificates from the mayor, reading underneath a tree in a garden, celebrating their birthday, taking their vows of marriage and smiling at their loved one when they did not think they were having their photograph taken. All these separate situations make up portrait photography. So let's begin …

What Is The Best Lighting for Portrait Photos?

Let's start with the most significant thing in portrait photography. If you want to discover how to take good portraits then this is where you begin. Lighting will either make or fracture your portrait photo. You need exactly the right amount of lighting to highlight the human being you're creating photos of.

Lighting also has an effect on mood and feeling. When you opt for lighting that is soft and dim this may create a more romantic feeling. When you go for lighting that is very bright and high in contrast, this is ideal for things like sports portrait photography. If you want to create a romantic sentiment in your shots then think about softening your light. Creating gentle light can make portrait photography more interesting.

Choose the lighting that is well-matched to the situation. Wedding photography that has filtered lighting can work very well. However if you are photography some kids in the park, then you may want to choose a bright and colorful lighting effect. Something that is vivid and vibrant can represent happiness and liveliness. So what about situations where lighting is poor? I have been in many situations before where it has been almost no lighting and I have not been able to use the flash. In this situation you may want to turn your ISO up to the highest setting. If you can use your flash then do it.

Do not stand too close to the person you're photography and fire the flash at the same time. Depending on what flash that is on your camera you may be able to have different intensities of flash light being fired. Or if you have flash built into the camera you may not be able to control the intensity of the light. This depends on the camera on the sort of flash you have. If you stand too close to the person you are going to overexpose the features on their face, produce small, vivid areas of light on their cheekphones and nose. No matter how hard you try it will not be able to remove it easily in Photoshop.

If you are creating photos of someone at a party at night-time, and the flash is the only source of lighting you have, then make sure you stand back from the person. Any closer than 3 meters may overexpose the person. You also do not want to blast them with an eye full of extreme, dazzling light. I prefer to shoot with a long telephoto lens and use the flash simultaneously. I like to stand back and zoom in, and increase my flash up to the maximum intensity. Whenever I've done this I have found that I have a nice light over the person's features.

Bouncing the flash is a great method to enhance portrait photography. When you bounce the flash you basically twist the head of the flash up to the ceiling, or towards a wall, and allow the light to reflect from that source back to the person. Bounced light is softer and a lot better for portraits. It is a wonderful way to get better portraits at weddings, birthdays and celebrations.

Always remember that your lighting must be well balanced. You need soft lighting over your person's face to create an appealing portrait photo. Even if you have the best lens and camera in the world, it will not help you at all unless you have the light spread evenly across the people features. This emphasizes the eyes and smile.

Color Portrait Photography

Color portrait photography covers many things. Wedding photography is a classic example of this. As I have spoken about your lighting and things that you can do with your lighting, I will now cover color.

The secrets and techniques to color portrait photography are of course your lighting but is also color matching. For example, if you want to generate a beautiful color portrait then you would not only expose the light in a good way, but you would make sure that the colors match. This is a big secret that photographers have up our sleeves. Let me explain.

Color portrait photography is successful when all the colors complement each other within the one image. If you want to create a color portrait that is striking then choose colors that go well with the person's skin tone. Let's take the example of a woman with blond hair, light skin and green eyes. If you were to dress her in black it would not look good on her at all. However earthy Greens, light pink, blue and purple, will suit her complexion. Someone who has black hair, dark skin and brown eyes may be suited to other colors. They may look fantastic in white, black or other different colors.

The secret that portrait photographers use when creating beautiful portraits are "color matching" when recommend what to wear. If you're photographing many people in your portrait photography then it always looks nice to dress people in either the same or very similar colors. A family photographed on the beach might look nice all dressed in white, blue and yellow. The camera may be telling you that it wants you to slow down the shutter speed. However, you know that if you do, you will completely blur the person. And that may not be ideal for the setting.

If you are photographing your portrait photo in studio lighting then these things are not going to be a big setback. You will always still need to watch your shutter speed because even the smallest movement at a slow shutter speed can create out of focus pictures. Decide on the shutter speed that is quite fast so that you will not have to be anxious about blur from any movement.

So as you can see camera settings of portraits is not a black-and-white topic, excuse the pun. You need to work out the right camera settings to your portraits based on the lights but you have to work with. As I mentioned portrait photography covers a wide range of areas and conditions so it is ideal that everything is well exposed and that you have the exact shutter speed to match the movement.

Which Is the Right Lens for Portrait Photography?

Being a professional photographer means I have many lenses to choose from. I have many lenses because it gives me the ability to be adaptable in each situation. This does not mean that you have to rush out and acquire different lenses yourself. I recommend trying out ports with one lens so that you get comfortable with how your lens works with portrait shots.

Different lenses give different effects. A 50 mm fixed focal length lens is a good focal length for portrait photography. You can get up close to someone without making their nose look too huge as a wide angle can sometimes do. In fact I suggest staying away from wide-angle lenses for your portrait photography. You have to be able to get a good head and shoulders shot, medium crop or good vertical length shot. You can achieve this using a couple of lenses.

I guess I would have to admit that my favorite portrait lens is the 70 to 200 mm cannon telephoto lens. I am a Canon user however I have used Nikon in the past and found both of them excellent. Nikon also has a 70 to 200 mm telephoto lens that I found excellent. At this focal length you can take remarkable candid portraits and you can also use this lens to take clear studio shots too. You almost certainly do not need a focal length that is so long if you are working in the studio. Your 50 to 70 mm range will probably do quite fine.

Why do I like 70 to 200 mm? Basically because it gives me the versatility of zooming in quite close up to someone and it also gives me the flexibility to take candidate shots in social situations. I find the flexibility and adaptability of this focal range very clever indeed. I know photographers that take a couple of cameras to a wedding because they have numerous lenses that they want to utilize. I find the 70 to 200 mm range does the job just fine.

These are pricey lenses. This is a professional capability lens so I propose becoming very familiar with the lens you have before buying something like this. I also have a 24 to 105 mm lens that works very skilfully for portrait photography too. I only prefer to use the 70 to 200 mm as many times I do candid shots. Having that additional focal length of 200 mm lets me to get a little bit closer than I could with a 105 mm.

I have also taken ports with the 50 mm lens that have worked superbly. However I can not really do this in a candid situation. I simply can not get in directly enough without being noticed. When I have done animal portraits and ordinary human portraits, I found that the 50 mm prime lens was a clear lens to use. If someone knows they're going to have their picture taken then they will definitely sit still for you. The 50 mm prime lens is sharp and clear for posed portraits up close.

In a nutshell I guess I would have to say that it is dependent on the sort of portrait photography that you are doing, as to what lens to use. Try and acquire a lens that works perfectly for the type of portraits you take.

Creative Portrait Photography Ideas

There are lots of creative portrait photography ideas that you can use easily and swiftly. Here are a few ideas that you can use. I use them in my portrait photography so please feel free to use them as well.

And, in a basic sense, everyone looks great being photographed in black and white. When you come to your post processing, reduce a little of the mid tones, boost your contrast and you will have a good black and white photo.

These are just some ideas that you can use to produce lovely inventive portraiture. You will find the more you do it the more creative ideas come. It really is just a matter of preparation and application. You will be successful in no time.

Just remember that the key to taking sharp portraits is good lighting, knowing how to use your camera, being aware of the camera settings for the light and being proficient to work well with people.

Childhood Obesity – Start Early

I had an interesting experience yesterday. I was waiting to pick up our three year old granddaughter from a special class at a public school. While I was waiting, school let out and the kids started running around the front lawn. Many of them were overweight and some by quite a bit.

One of the children was walking with her father and they were talking about an afternoon snack. They were going to have popcorn. I have nothing against popcorn, but without it is air popped with no salt, butter or other additives it's not exactly healthy. I also do not think a child would be willing to eat air popped popcorn.

Eating Habits : What our children will eat as they grow up is going to be decided now. Instilling good habits needs to start in the cradle if possible. Making certain our children eat a healthy balance of food is necessary.

You may think I do not know how difficult that is. I'm the mother of two and the grandmother of two. I know what happens when a child does not like a food or even a whole genre of food. It's still important to try.

Healthy Snacks : Some children will enjoy raw fruits and vegetables. Some might like whole grain bread. Not all of them will. We have to use our imagination (and the internet at times) to find something healthy they will eat. It may require effort but it's worth it.

Make Sure About Lunch : Another thing happened yesterday. Our granddaughter did not eat her lunch. I'm not sure why, but she did not and she was cranky.

That does not really change as kids get older. Packing or purchasing a lunch that does not get eaten will mean children will crave something solid and they probably will not be willing to wait until dinner. If your child is a finicky eater, let the child help you choose, purchase and pack the lunch. We were lucky. Our granddaughter is a great fan of raw vegetables and helped polish off the Superbowl veggie platter.
