Tunica albuginea information

To learn about the tunica albuginea, it's necessary to know a little about basic penis anatomy. When the penis becomes erect, the spongy tissue of the corpora cavernosa absorbs an increased flow of blood, which causes them to expand and harden. The tunica albuginea contain a fair amount of elastin, which enables them to expand as well so they can "keep up" with the corpora cavernosa.

Bent penis problem

As mentioned, Peyronie's disease is a situation in which a man possesses a significant bent penis – not one with a small degree of curvature, but one in which the bending is enough to cause pain and / or penis function issues. In most cases, this bending occurs due to a problem with the tunica albuginea.

Peyronie's disease comes about most often because scar tissue has developed in the penis. This frequently happens when there is trauma to the penis. It may be a one-time traumatic event, such as getting hit in the penis by a baseball, or it may be due to repeated small traumatic events, such as repeated rough handling of the penis during sex or masturbation.

Very often this scarring takes place in the tunica albuginea. Treatment

The field and practice of worksite wellness today basically revolves around three terms – health, wellness and wellbeing. Other terms also seen used include: thriving, flourishing, health promotion, optimal living and quality of life. But the big three are health, wellness and wellbeing.

Since these terms are used interchangeably or as synonyms, I have wondered just how different or the same these terms are? When I framed out this question in my mind, I thought it would be simple enough to just look-up their definitions and I would have my answer.

But, boy was I wrong. Definitions only got me so far and not very far at that. It appears that a clear picture requires understanding the term's concept and context, as well as its definition.

What Is Health?

Probably, the most commonly cited definition of health is the 1948 definition by the World Health Organization (WHO). "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

The 1994 Mosby, 4th Edition, Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Dictionary defines health as: "A condition of physical, mental and social wellbeing and the absence of disease or other abnormal condition.

Rice University defines health as being "a multi-dimensional concept that is usually measured in terms of: l) absence of physical pain, physical disability, or a condition that is likely to cause death, 2) emotional well-being, and 3 ) satisfactory social functioning. "

Wikipedia sees health as being "the level of functional or metabolic efficiency of a living organism. In humans it is the ability of individuals or communities to adapt and self-manage when facing physical, mental or social challenges."

Fritjof Capra and Pier Luisi in their 2014 book, The Systems View of Life, define health as "a state of well-being, resulting from a dynamic balance that involves the physical and psychological aspects of the organism, as well as its interactions with its natural and social environment. "

The 2013 Edition 22 of Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary defines health as "a condition in which all functions of the body and mind are normally active."

In Merriam – Webster's 2006 Medical Dictionary, health is "(1) the condition of an organism or one of its parts in which it performs its vital functions normally or properly; the state of being sound in body or mind; freedom from physical disease and (2) the condition of an organism with respect to the performance of its vital functions, especially as evaluated subjectively (How's your health today?). "

Stedman's 7th Edition Medical Dictionary for the Health Professions and Nursing, 2012, has defined health as "(1) the state of an organism when it functions optimally without evidence of disease or abnormality; (2) a state characterized by anatomic, physiologic and psychological ability to perform personally valued family, work and community roles; ability to deal with physical, biologic psychological and social stress; a feeling of wellbeing; freedom from the risk of disease and untimely death.

Unlike health status which is a fixed state at any one specific point in time, health is a much larger concept. "Health is a largely a subjective experience which quality can be known intuitively but can never be exhaustively defined or quantified." (Capra and Luisi, 2014) Health is there relative, subjective and multi-dimensional. How we define life will determine how we define health. Since life depends on the natural and social environments, so does our health.

When examining and considering definitions, it is important from a conceptual perspective to remember that definitions are only part of the perspective. For conceptual clarity, one also needs to consider context and relevancy as being equally important as areas to focus on as well.

Understanding health in relationship to worksite wellness is not as simple as defining the term.

Why Does Blood Pressure Raise at Night?

The heart pumps blood to all parts of the body and this blood is carried throughout the body via the arteries. The force with which the heart pumps the blood into the arteries is known as blood pressure. While there is no particular cause of blood pressure that has as yet been determined as a definite ground for the disease to develop, there are a number of factors which all add up to lead to the culmination of the condition.

When a specific cause is not known, the illness is referred to as primary high blood pressure. Many a time high blood pressure arises out of complications due to some other medical problem in such context it is called secondary high blood pressure.

Blood pressure alters throughout the day. Under normal circumstances, blood pressure is lowest while the person sleeps and higher during the daytime when a host of activities are being carried out.

When a person wakes up, the blood pressure is higher than normal. This is so because when the person gets up from a horizontal position, which is from lying down, a surge of adrenaline goes straight to the head and this increases the heart rate which in turn increases the blood pressure. Then why is it that sometimes your blood pressure is much higher at nigh than what it is during the day?

One of the basic reasons for a spike in blood pressure levels at night is due to night-time noises which can range from traffic on the roads, to airplanes flying over-head to stray animals making a noise. These disturbances can cause the level of blood pressure to rise noticeably. Researchers have found that the rise in blood pressure is linked to the loudness level of the noise.

The decibel level of the noise source is the key factor in determining what kind of effect the noise has on the blood pressure of the listener. For some people, the noise of their partner snoring can cause enough of a disturbance to cause a fluctuation in their levels of blood pressure.

Blood pressure levels have also been linked to the weather and research has proven that during the daytime in hot weather the blood pressure falls but there is a marked increase in the level of systolic blood pressure at night. There has also been a recent study that has managed to find a link between the Restless Leg Syndrome and the development of cardiovascular disease through an increase in the level of blood pressure in people at night.

This is especially true in the case of elderly people. The symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome are basically in the form of an almost involuntary and unconscious movement of the legs at a period of every twenty to forty seconds. These movements are most pronounced at night as the person is not comfortable being still and at rest. These movements lead to a marked increase in the level of blood pressure, and as they are most common during the nighttime, before the person manages to fall asleep, there is a definite increase in the person’s blood pressure at night.

Treatment of Excessive Sweating Or Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis which is simply excessive sweating most often affects the palms, feet and face, causing embarrassment and interfering with daily chores. Excessive sweating is considered rare but recent estimates show that 2.8 percent of populations have hyperhidrosis doubling in Asian communities and some other countries. Diagnosis

Many patients visit a dermatologist for hyperhidrosis. The doctor will start the diagnostic process with a physical examination. If you have the condition the doctor l will see sweat droplets on your body, even when you aren’t anxious and have a normal heart rate and blood pressure. Family history must be analyzed because studies have shown that 25 to 50 percent of patients with palmar hyperhidrosis have a family history of hyperhidrosis.

To rule out serious conditions that can cause sweating, such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, growth hormone disorder, and tumor of the adrenal gland, blood tests are carried out.

Minor-starch iodine test help to determine the severity of hyperhidrosis and response to treatment.

The treatment

Many treatment methods are available for primary hyperhidrosis. The least invasive treatment options that relieve symptoms are preferred. Surgery is reserved for patients with serious condition and haven’t found cure from other treatments.

Medications

Iontophoresis treatment

Botox or Botulinum Toxin injections.

This temporarily blocks the nerves that trigger your sweat glands. Injections of up to 20 small doses of Botox are carried out in a treatment session. The injection sites are determined by diagnostic sweat tests. To reduce the pain caused by the injections, anesthetic techniques that include oral, intravenous sedation medication and topical creams are used.

Surgery

Surgery is an option if you have severe hyperhidrosis and other treatments haven’t worked. Two approaches are often used. One entail interrupting the nerve signal triggering excessive sweating and the other procedure is to remove some sweat glands.

Types of surgery

There are three main surgical approaches as explained below.

Sympathectomy involves clipping or removing part of the sympathetic nerve.

Sympathotomy is a new procedure which interrupts the nerve signals without removing the sympathetic nerve. The benefit is a greatly reduced risk of compensatory sweating.

Minimally invasive sympathectomy

In minimally invasive sympathectomy the surgeon places clips on the sympathetic nerve to block nerve signals. This treatment is effective in reducing hyperhidrosis symptoms on many people. When carried out by experienced surgeons, the procedure stops excessive palmar sweating but less for the underarms and feet. Compensatory sweating rarely occurs as a side effect. Orthodox sympathectomy performed by many surgeons involves removing most or all of the upper thoracic sympathetic nerve chain. This method also called a ganglionectomy and is not reversible. A common complication of this surgery is compensatory sweating in which patients experience new excessive sweating elsewhere.

Minimally invasive sympathotomy.

In a sympathotomy, the surgeon disconnects two clusters of nerve cells or ganglions on the sympathetic nerve by the second rib thus blocking the nerve pathway that causes excessive sweating.

Local excision

This surgery is for auxiliary hyperhidrosis and surgeons remove targeted sweat glands. The method requires small incisions to be made on the affected part and can be performed with local anesthesia. Many people report significant and permanent reduction in sweating.

The surgeon makes two or three small cuts below the armpit. A miniature fiber optic camera is gently inserted to allow the surgeon to see the targeted nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. Small surgical instruments are then inserted through the other incisions to complete the procedure. This is performed by thoracic surgeons or neurosurgeons.

During the surgery, lungs are collapsed to allow enough room for the surgeon to work. When one side is completed, the surgeon performs an identical procedure on the opposite side. On completion of the surgery, the lung is re-expanded, and the incisions are closed.

Avoiding the conflict is not reasonable because we can’t always control what comes at us. Figurine out how to navigate through any issues is what needs to happen to stay on track.

I think so many times we approach health and fitness goals with an “all or nothing” mindset. My philosophy is nourish, movement, mindset. If we can work on nourishing our bodies, moving them mindfully and maintaining a healthy attitude, we can function a little better day by day, week by week, month by month and eventually get into the healthy habits on a regular basis that we need to achieve total body balance.

1. Nourish.

Focus on one small thing at a time. Start simple and work from there. Don’t expect to change your eating habits overnight. Small changes executed day after day, week after week and so on can lead to really big change. So pick one small nutrition action and practice it for one to two weeks before adding in a new change.

Examples: Work on portion control (without regard to food quality), add one colorful food in at each meal, take 15 minutes to meal prep tomorrow’s healthy food or omit your sugary after dinner snack (swap it out with a healthy alternative). You could eat slowly and chew your food completely or focus on balancing your meals so that you have protein, carbohydrate and fat at each meal. Omitting processed foods at one to two meals per day is also another great option. These are just some examples but it’s up to you to figure out which little step you can take to improve your nutrition.

2. Movement.

Take advantage of the time that you DO have. Carve out space in the small pockets of your time. We get fixated on time so often that we don’t realize that a little is always better than nothing. For example, it’s so easy to think that you have to do a workout for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Wouldn’t 15 minutes of that workout be better than nothing though? The answer is yes! So squeeze in what you can, when you can.

Get unconventional. Maybe you don’t have time to get in a “workout”. Do what you can with what you’ve got. Maybe you take the stairs that day instead of the elevator. Park in the parking space furthest away from the building (gasp!) to get some extra steps in. Stand up from your desk and walk around for a minute every 15 or 20 minutes. Run around at the playground with your kids. Movement doesn’t always have to be in the form of a straight up 30 minute HIIT workout. It can be moving and active – outside or inside. What are the ways that you could get in some more movement?

Move mindfully. Pay close attention to your body and what it’s trying to tell you. Your body and energy levels will fluctuate day by day so take advantage of more vigorous workouts when you can and also add in active recovery, lighter workouts or even yoga or stretching when necessary.

3. Mindset.

Don’t give up. Don’t throw in the towel on eating right and moving your body. It’s seems easy to take the “all or nothing” approach but that’s not necessary. Something is always better than nothing.Don’t beat yourself up! Life ebbs and flows for everyone. Take a look at where you’re at right now and what you can make work right now.

The most important thing is to honor where you’re at. Only you know what you’re capable of at this point in your life. Make sure the small steps you take are 100% doable for you and your lifestyle. Small steps over time can add up to big change.

Today is the day to remember my greatest vision of myself, today is

All the seasons have their teachings but springtime is by far the most
inspiring. In summer we are active, hot and fiery, it is the most
passionate and energetic time of year. The autumn comes reminding us
to gather our harvests, to celebrate the abundance we have reaped and
to prepare for the long nights ahead. The winter is our sacred time
to rest, to incubate, to sleep, to ponder life and restore our inner
strength. And then Spring, beauteous Spring, our greatest mirror and
metaphor for the rebirth of life. This is the time of awakening,
blossoming and opening, the time for creativity, play and pleasure; as
the world is a flutter with flowers and color, the beauty of Spring
inspires us towards our true potential, our ability to bloom and grow.

Like the seeds of a flower, we incubate during sleep ready to blossom
into fullness upon awakening. Every morning we awakened to a new day and
a new way to think and act out our lives. In fact every moment of
everyday we have the freedom to choose who and what we want to be. It
is always the first day of Spring, we at choice to choose ourselves
anew.

To re-create your life, to rebirth to the greatest aspects of yourself
you can begin by asking yourself three basic questions. These

When I ask myself this question these are some of my answers: I am a

I am a lover of nature, a creative woman and a being of love. How
about you? Who are you?

As you recognize who you are, it is easier to know what you want.
From the deepest core of your heart I ask you "What do you want?" Do
you want to feel loved, valued and appreciated? Do you want to feel
more successful? Get specific with yourself. In your deepest heart of
hearts what is your soul calling for?

When you add the answers of these two powerful questions together you
then have a greater understanding of who you want to be. This is the
key to your resolve renewal. What is the greatest aspect of the
grandest vision you hold for yourself? How can you align who you are
with what you want, to create who you want to be?

It is my belief that inner work is the way to outer changes; inner
work is where your personal magic takes hold. All you must do is take
the first step. Start knowing yourself as who you want to be as if
you are already there. For instance, if you want to be in partnership,
then everyday see yourself, feel yourself, believe yourself in
partnership, call it to you and expect it to be so. Use the power of
clear, decent statements to propel you towards who you want to be.
For all of your abundance comes from who you say you are. One thing
leads to the next and before you know it your life is blossoming in

Neck Pain, Back Pain and Sciatica – Understanding and Treating Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis is an arthritic condition that affects the spine and is also characterized by sacroiliac joint involvement, peripheral inflammatory arthropathy, and an absence of the rheumatoid factor. Symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis include neck pain, back pain, and sciatic nerve pain. Individuals with this condition experience the destruction of the cartilage and bone resulting in fibrous and bony ankylosing or fusing of the spine, pelvis, ribs, and other joints of the body. Patients with ankylosing spondylitis typically exhibit what is referred to as a stiff or "poker spine." Mobility of the spine usually is decreed symmetrically, meaning on both sides, but does seem to improve with exercise. The pain associated with this condition may range from mild to chronic and acute and has often been referred to as insidious. The pain associated with ankylosing spondylitis is often described as morning stiffness. Ankylosing spondylitis is slightly more prevalent in men and symptoms in men are generally more severe. Native American populations are most affected, although the reasons are unclear. Depending on the severity of the disease, posture may become affected. Ultimately, the condition may result in total disability.

Ankylosing spondylitis is often responsible for significant changes in the spine and the pelvis, particularly the sacroiliac joint, that joint between the pelvis (hips) and the sacrum (tailbone), as mentioned above. In skeletal samples, the vertebrae are often visibly fused over significant portions of the spine from the cervical (neck) to the base of the lumbar region or curvature (low back). The fusions in this condition are often bony with several vertebrae locked into place, thus the name ankylosing spondylitis. Because the spine, and often the sacroiliac joint becomes fused, mobility is restricted, bending becomes a problem if not impossible, and side to side motion is restricted. It was once believed that an individual diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis was faced with a life without prospects, this no longer needs to be the case. Given the proper treatment strategy individuals may lead a long and productive life.

In addition to ankylosing of the spinal, ankylosing spondylitis may cause significant changes, and varying degrees of pain, at other areas of the body, as well. While bony fusions of the vertebrae and sacroiliac joint are the most common, fusions of the ribs to vertebrae and the sternum (breastbone) are not uncommon and may cause difficulties expanding the chest and breathing. Additionally, tendons and ligaments that attach themselves to or come into contact with bone may also become inflamed and painful. Tendonitis may be expressed at any point in the body and is often evidenced in the Achilles tendon, causing a significant amount of heel pain.

Because ankylosing spondylitis is a systemic disease, symptoms may present themselves anywhere in the body. It is not uncommon for people suffering from ankylosing spondylitis to have elevated sedimentation rates, fevers, fatigue, loss of appetite, eye irritation, and even heart and lung disease. The condition itself may be difficult to diagnose, as the cause is yet unknown and no cure is available. An individual suffering from ankylosing spondylitis, in its worst expression, may end debilitating neck pain, back pain, and sciatic nerve pain along with stiffness and / or immobility over vast areas of the spinal, hips, and even the peripheral joints.

While there is no known cure for ankylosing spondylitis, there are treatments available to alleviate, and in some cases eliminate, the pain and discomfort. Programs have been developed to improve flexibility and function. Ankylosing spondylitis is progressive but it is possible, through exercise and stretching, to improve and even maintain good posture, preventing the stoped-over appearance and deformity, allowing individuals to conduct a reliably normal amount of daily activity and / or activities. And, a daily exercise program, one that includes stretching, deep breathing exercises, and even swimming will help individuals minimize many of the most debilitating consequences of the disease, long term. Inactivity should never be advised or prescribed, as it will only hasten the worst possible consequences of the condition and exacerbate the immobility, neck pain, back pain and sciatica often associated with the condition.

Cat Food: Many Choices

As I began researching articles about cat food, I found many with authoritative documentation and some with personal opinions. I personally wanted to know what would be the best to feed our mature cat. He has been on dry food since birth with expensive treats and occasionally a few pieces of meat – table scraps – of cooked chicken, beef, tuna, salmon or pork. This may not have been the most correct choice.

Our cat Simba, is strictly an indoor cat. He has always had good health and has a beautiful, glossy, smooth, orange tabby coat. He has starting vomiting a little bit, which appears to be unprocessed dry food or treats, and occasionally hair balls. I will leave the hairballs for another article. In this article I will look at cat food options. I decided to find out what kind of cat food we should get for him or if a dietary change is needed.

In my opinion, it often the ‘cost’ that drives the consumer’s decision on what cat food to purchase, even though our cats are very precious to us. I am sure we want the best food we can afford to give our pet, and what is best for him. In evaluating the issue, I believe that ‘costs’ can be evaluated in two ways.

First, we can get the best from the grocery store. Much of our decision is probably based on the advertising we hear or see through the media, and occasionally from a friend. It is often that we are at the store, cat food is on our list, our selection is on sale, it says it’s ‘natural’ or some other persuasive word on the label, and we place it in our cart with little thought to read the ingredient list. At home, our cat likes it when we feed him the selected food, so we think we have made a good choice.

Second, we can do a lot of research, decide to go to a pet store or make a purchase online for a good quality, high protein cat food, and know from what we have read that it is a good choice, and ‘cost’ didn’t really become the deciding factor. Our cat’s health became the more important issue.

Some cat owners are probably a little on both sides when selecting the cat food; I know I am. Cost is important, but the quality of health our cat enjoys is also very important. We enjoy spoiling our cats, and our cats love to be pampered, so sometimes we supplement our cat’s food with cat treats. Spoiling our cats with treats may not be a good decision either. He may want more because he is not nutritionally satisfied with the cat food we give him. How do we make the right decision?

As with ourselves, we feel better when we eat better, and so will our cats. Let me briefly share with you some information I found it articles that I researched.

1. Whole meats such as chicken, beef, lamb, salmon, etc. vs. cat food with ‘meal’, ‘by-products’, ‘animal digest’, and added sugars. Analysis: Whole meat is best, as you may know. If you really want to know what goes into some inexpensive pet food, and your stomach can stand the information, take the time to read about it on the web. Many of the products put into pet foods should not be ingested by any living thing, and these are products are put into pet food by many large pet food companies.

2. Grain based vs. grain free cat food: Analysis: Cats do not need grains. Most grains are used a fillers in canned cat food and as binding agents in dry cat food. Some manufactures believe that grains will add protein content, which it does, but cats need meat protein, not grain proteins. Some cats may also develop allergies to wheat or corn when added to their food.

3. Cat food with vegetables and fruits: Analysis: Often you can observe that vegetables, such as peas or corn, go right through a cat’s digestive tract without being processed in the intestines. Cats process meat proteins, but not vegetables or fruits.

4. Dry cat food vs. Canned/moist cat food: Analysis: Dry cat food is not natural. It has carbohydrates for fillers, such as grains, to hold it together. The label may indicate that it has high protein content but most of the protein is grain or milk protein, not meat protein. Don’t, however, feel that canned cat food is the only answer because it may also contain fillers including grains, meal, by-products, milk, etc. Several articles suggested that a combination of dry and canned may be the best for your cat.

5. Raw meat vs. high-protein canned cat food: Analysis: I never felt this issue was totally resolved. It has much to do with the individual cat and his owner. Canned food is more convenient and has a longer shelf life, and should be kept refrigerated after it is open. Raw food takes more preparation and has a shorter refrigerated shelf life. You can read discussions on this subject on several cat forums.

6. Grocery store cat food vs. pet store or online high quality cat food: Analysis: I believe that we could all come to the conclusion that a high protein from meat is the better choice, and that product would probably best be purchased at a pet store (which also carry the grocery store brands), or online.

In conclusion, here are a few final thoughts.

* Even thought the cost is higher with a better quality cat food, your cat will eat less because it is a better protein and he is nutritionally satisfied. He won’t eat as much, and he will be less likely to develop liver or other diseases. You, therefore, will have less expensive vet bills, and a happier, healthier cat.

* Read the labels, do research (other than asking friends and listening to or reading ads), and become an educated consumer. Purchase the cat food you feel is best for your cat.

* Consider the age of your cat. A kitten shouldn’t eat the same cat food as your mature cat. The brands will indicate on the label which food is best for your age of cat.

* Introduce any dietary changes slowly, probably over the course of a week or so.

* Research the web, read books, or talk with your vet so you can decide which cat food is best.

All cat foods are not the same. Your cat’s taste buds may like some brands or meats better than others. Purchasing the cat food you feel is best will give you peace of mind by giving him the best cat food you can afford, and he will feel better and more satisfied as he adjusts to his new diet.

Mesothelioma – An Introduction

The mesothelium is a membrane that covers & protects most of the internal organs of the body, the mesothelium is composed of two layers of cells, one layer immediately surrounds the organ the other forms a sac like covering around it. The mesothelium membrane produces a lubricating fluid that is released between these layers, allowing moving organs such as the beating heart and lungs to slide easily against adjacent structures.

The mesothelium is called by different names, depending on where it is located in the body. For e.g. the peritoneum is the mesothelial tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity. The pericardium covers and protects the heart. The pleura is the membrane that surrounds the lungs and lines the wall of the chest cavity. The mesothelial tissue surrounding the male internal reproductive organs is called the tunica vaginalis testis. The tunica serosa uteri covers the internal reproductive organs in women.

What is Mesothelioma?

Now the next question that arises is what is Mesothelioma? Mesothelioma or the cancer of the mesothelium is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancerous cells can also spread called metastasizing from their original place to other parts of the body. Most cases of Mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum, i.e. the lining surrounding the chest and the lungs.

In malignant Mesothelioma, which is a rare form of cancer, the cancerous or malignant cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura), the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) or the lining around the heart (the pericardium).

How do you get Mesothelioma?

The single largest cause of Mesothelioma is working with asbestos; it is a major risk factor for Mesothelioma. A history of asbestos exposure at work is reported in about 70 percent to 80 percent of all cases. However, there have been cases where Mesothelioma has been reported in some individuals without any known exposure to asbestos. Most people with malignant Mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos. Others have been exposed to asbestos in a household environment, often without their knowledge.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is the name of a group of minerals that occur naturally as masses of strong, flexible fibers that can be separated into thin threads and woven. Asbestos has been widely used in many industrial products, including cement, brake linings, roof shingles, flooring products, textiles, and insulation. If tiny asbestos particles float in the air, especially during the manufacturing process, they may be inhaled or swallowed, and can cause serious health problems. In addition to Mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos increases the risk of lung cancer, asbestosis (a non cancerous, chronic lung ailment), and other cancers, such as those of the larynx and kidney.

The risk of asbestos-related disease increases with heavier exposure to asbestos and longer exposure time. There is some evidence that family members and others living with asbestos workers have an increased risk of developing Mesothelioma, and possibly other asbestos-related diseases. This risk may be the result of exposure to asbestos dust brought home on the clothing and hair of asbestos workers.

While its true that men start out with greater bone density and lose calcium at a lower rate than women, hormonal changes may be a factor to men's development of osteoporosis. A decline in testosterone, which occurs naturally at the age of 60, results in a limited ability to use diet calcium to build or repair bones.

Some Facts On ALS

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS for short and also widely referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is disorder that causes the death of neurons throughout the body that control voluntary muscles. It is characterized by stiff muscles, muscle twitching and increased weakness in muscles as they decrease in size. Although ALS may start small, eventually the patient will have difficulty speaking, swallowing and ultimately, breathing.

Between 5 and 10% of ALS cases are due to heredity. If a parent has the disease, the offspring are 50% more likely to get it as well due to the heredity factor. All other cases are due to other factors, and researchers are busy trying to pinpoint exactly what causes this disease to occur.

Risk factors that have been found out already include age as most cases start to occur between the ages of 40-60, and sex, because slightly more women than men will have ALS before age 65 (after age 70, sex doesn’t factor into the issue as it becomes more balanced between men and women). Environmental factors like smoking, exposure to environmental toxins and service in the military are also being studied. It’s not clear why more veterans get ALS than those who have done no military service, but researchers are looking into continual exertion, exposure to metals and chemicals and traumatic injuries as other factors that contribute to ALS.

So what causes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to attack an otherwise healthy person? It could be a gene mutation, it could be a chemical imbalance like having too much glutimate which has been found to be toxic to cells, it could be a disorganized immune response or it could be a protein mishandling issue. This is where research is going at the moment in an attempt to narrow down how a person become affected and what we can do to stop this terrible disease.

Some early signs of ALS include difficulty walking, falling, tripping, hand weakness, clumsiness, slurred speech, trouble swallowing and muscle cramps. ALS starts slowly, usually in the hands, feet or limbs and then spreads to other muscle groups. Sadly, those who have ALS have between two and four years before it will claim them, although 10% of patients do live ten years past diagnosis. Most people who have ALS die from respiratory failure and some will acquire dementia near the end as well. This is a horrible disease, one that has no cure, but one in which teams of researchers are trying to understand.
