How to Cold Weather Camp in Your RV

As the weather gets colder, campers start putting them RV's away for the winter. But not so fast. There is so much to see and do during the winter season and enjoying these activities from the comfort of your RV can be a refreshing experience.

Here's how to prepare your motorhome, travel trailer, toy hauler, or 5th wheel to ensure you have a pleasurable, safe, and protected cold-weather camping experience.

* Examine your RV's plumbing to determine what measures may be needed to prevent damage from freezing temperatures. Some RV's have plumbing exposed to the outside elements. In this case, you should wrap the exposed plumbing with heat tape and foam pipe insulation.

* Part of the plumbing system includes the holding tanks. Some RV's have enclosed holding tanks that are heated by the RV's furnace through heater ducting to the holding tank areas. As long as the furnace runs occasionally, the tanks will not freeze unless it's very cold (below 20F).

* For those tanks that are not heated and / or enclosed, tank heating pads can be affixed to the bottoms of the tanks. These are very easy to install, thermostatically-controlled, and come in both 12-volt DC and 110-volt AC.

* Yet another part of the RV plumbing system is the holding tank piping and dump valves. Some higher end RVs have these pipes and valves enclosed and heated from the factory. For most RVs though, they are exposed to the elements. As with the plumbing pipes, these pipes and valves can be protected by wrapping them with heat tape too.

* You should keep your gray and black water valves closed until you are ready to dump your holding tanks. If gray water is constantly allowed to drain, it will eventually form an ice dam in your sewer hose. As an alternative, you could also try insulating and wrapping heat tape around your sewer hose if you want to leave the gray water valve open. In any case, be absolutely certain that your sewer hose is at a steep angle where liquids drain quickly and are not allowed to stand. Using a sewer hose support will help with this.

* Another area subject to freezing is the fresh water supply hose. You can use a heated water hose to prevent freezing. This is a good option if you are in a campground with full hookups. They run on either 12 volts DC or 110 volts AC.

* To reduce drafts and heating requirements, you can insulate the RV's windows against the cold with heavy drapes or curtains. You can create an insulating dead air space inside of the windows by covering them with clear, heavy vinyl. You can even cover the interior of the windows with sheets of Styrofoam or poster board but these are a little hard to see through.

* The roof vents are an area where heat can escape. There are foam type pillows specifically made to be placed in the vent openings. These fit snugly and greatly reduce heat loss in these areas.

* If you have a motorhome, hang a heavy blanket or privacy curtain between the driver's compartment and the rest of the motorhome which will block the cold radiated by a motorhome's windshield. This works very well wherever you have a Class A, B, or C type motorhome as they all have large windshields.

* Any compartments that open into the inside of the RV need to have good weather seals. Adding some inexpensive foam tape or weather stripping to the compartment opening and doors will really help seal those air leaks.

* Now that the RV is sealed tight from air leaks, we have the problem of condensation to deal with. Moisture from cooking, washing and just our breathing raises the humidity inside the RV. As it gets colder, this moisture condenses out on cooler inside surfaces like window frames and doors. This can lead to mold and mildew, water stains or even worse. The best way to prevent condensation is to avoid introducing excessive moisture into the air. A good practice is to always use the range hood vent when cooking and the bathroom vent when showering. This will draw most of that moisture out of the rig. It may be necessary to keep a roof vent open slightly to provide some ventilation and keep condensation in check. Insulating exposed surfaces that tend to collect moisture will also help. A small dehumidifier or some of those little tubs of desiccant crystals may be necessary, depending on the RV and how many are staying in it.

* Finally, we need to consider how the RV is going to be heated. Portable electric heaters are a great supplement to the propane furnace. This method of heating does not add condensation to the air and allows the propane furnace to run considering less, saving a lot of propane. Catalytic heaters are another popular way to provide assistance to the propane furnace but require fresh air ventilation to avoid oxygen depletion in the RV.

Here are some more tips on how to help you cold weather camp in your RV:

  • If you do not want to spend the money for a heated fresh water hose, simply disconnect the normal hose from the RV and the water spigot when the temperature is going to fall below freezing. Empty the hose and store it. You can then use the RV's fresh water tank to supply water.
  • Some cold-weather RVers winterize and then do not use their plumbing system at all. Instead, they carry containers of drinking water inside the living area of ​​the RV and quite completely upon the campground's restroom facilities. Call ahead to the campground if this is your plan. Some close their restrooms during the off-season and others may only have electrical hookups available.
  • During the evening, leave your cabinet doors open slightly. This will help some heat reach the plumbing that runs through the cabinetry and along the cold walls.
  • If possible, empty the holding tanks if they will be subject to freezing and pour a couple of quarts of non-toxic, biodegradable antifreeze into each holding tank. This will protect the dump valves. Pour in more antifreeze as wastewater fills the tanks.
  • When using any type of chemical heater in any inside area, provide a fresh air opening of at least three square inches. This is necessary because this type of heater consumes the oxygen in your RV. If you do not replace the depleted oxygen through ventilation, you stand a chance of not waking up the next morning.
  • Although the methods explained in this article will help substantively reduce the potential for plumbing and holding tanks from freezing, they can not guarantee it. Once the temperature gets low enough, little can be done to keep up. Unfortunately, we all have to stop camping at some point!

And like other dog breeds, beagles also have health problems-they are predisposed to certain diseases. One of the health issues of beagles is that they are prone to skin infections/problems.

What are the common skin diseases of beagles?

As with other dog breeds, skin problems in beagles can be caused by numerous agents including infectious agents (bacteria, virus, fungi, parasites), external irritants, allergens and trauma (burns, radiation).

Bacterial dermatitis (pyoderma)

Bacteria that can cause skin infections include Staphylococcus intermedius (most common causative agent), normal resident bacteria of the skin (Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp.), Pseudomonas sp., and E.coli.

Areas such as lip folds, facial folds, neck folds, axillary areas, dorsal or plantar interdigital areas, vulvar areas, and tail folds are especially prone to bacterial pyoderma because the warm and moist conditions in these areas allow the bacteria to overgrow and colonize the skin surface.

Dermatophytosis

Dermatophytes (Microsporum canis, M. gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes) are the common fungal agents that cause skin problems in dogs. In dogs that have dermatophytosis, the affected area(s) are alopecic, scaly patches with broken hairs. Papules and pustules can also form in the affected area.

Mange and external parasites (fleas and ticks)

Mange mites (Demodex sp. and Sarcoptes scabei) can also cause hair loss and dermatitis. Fleas and ticks can also trigger dermatitis. A condition called flea allergy dermatitis is common in dogs and flea bites cause severe irritation and dogs may develop hypersensitivity to the flea saliva (which is injected during feeding/biting).

Allergy (Atopic dermatitis)

Allergens in the environment can trigger an allergic reaction which is mostly observed in the skin (allergic inhalant dermatitis or atopy). Allergic inhalant dermatitis is a very common allergy in dogs with ~10% of the canine population suffering from the condition. The most frequently affected areas include the feet, face, ears, axillae, and abdomen.

Food allergy is also a common type of atopy in dogs. Foods that most frequently cause allergy to dogs include beef, chicken, corn, wheat, soy, and milk.

Other causes of skin problems

Nutritional deficiencies, hypothyroidism, hyperadrenocorticism, excessive estrogen production or administration can also result in skin problems (often seen as hair loss).

How do I know my beagle has skin disease?

Generally, problems in the skin are manifested as:

  • Itching and scratching
  • Inflammation of the skin (dermatitis)- seen as reddening of the skin (erythema), scaling, pustules
  • Scratching
  • Loss of hair
  • Licking

How are skin diseases diagnosed?

With skin problems, the vet will need to make a thorough examination of the dog (type of lesions, location/affected area(s)) and know the dermatologic history. The vet may also need to perform tests to help him with the diagnosis such as Wood’s lamp examination (dermatophytosis), fungal culture, allergy investigations (dietary tests, patch testing, and intradermal testing), skin scrapings, combing of hair coat for fleas or lies, and biopsy. In some cases, the skin infection or itching may be idiopathic after all diagnostic tests have been performed. In cases of idiopathic skin diseases, corticosteroids or antihistamines and essential fatty acids can be given.

What is the treatment for skin problems?

To effectively treat skin infections require that the underlying cause should be determined. Bacterial pyoderma is treated by oral antibiotics (given for 21-30 days; longer duration of treatment for chronic cases).Dermatophytosis is treated by giving the dog antifungals such as Itraconazole, fluconazole, terbinafine, ketoconazole, and griseofulvin. Insecticides can be given if there are fleas and ticks.

Until the underlying cause is determined, topical and systemic therapy may be given. Cleansing and antiparasitic shampoos are available and can be used for routine cleansing (remove dirt, excess oil from the hair coat). Medicated shampoos that contain chlorhexidine and benzoyl peroxide are widely used for their antibacterial property. Antiseborrheic shampoos contain tar, sulphur and salicylic acid and they can be used for seborrheic dermatitis. In the case of antifungal shampoo, they have not been shown to shorten the course of infection and are best avoided.

What can I do to help keep my beagle’s skin healthy?

Feed your dog a complete and balanced diet that will meet his nutritional needs.

Whether your beagle is a puppy or an adult, make sure that he is getting the right amounts of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Dogs also require linoleic acid, an unsaturated essential fatty acid that is important for coat and skin health, found in corn, safflower, sunflower and soy oil.

Regular grooming

Brush your dog’s coat at least once a week and bathe your dog for 1-2 times per week. Brushing the haircoat will not only provide the bonding you need with your pet but it will also help massage the skin and release natural skin oils. Regular brushing will also give you the time to check for presence of ticks, fleas or other skin and haircoat problems.

Regular check-up

Bring your dog to the vet on a regular basis to have him checked for skin parasites or early signs of skin and hair coat problems. Skin problems can be caused by an underlying disease condition and it will help your dog a lot if the disease is diagnosed and treated early.

We need to eat to survive; end of story. Or is it?

There was a time in days gone by when we were more in contact with what went on with the food we ate before it reached our mouths. The old ways meant being wise and resourceful when it came to food because this was the difference between seeing it through the Winter or not, for food or a lack of it, was a matter of life or death. We could be found to be actively involved in gathering and foraging in the hedgerows and fields. We would toil the land and tend to livestock. We were governed and guided by the seasons. We were part of something much greater than ourselves and we took nothing for granted. We were aware, conscious even, of the importance of everything that was brought to the table and of our being involved with it.

Now, we live in different times but, if you choose it and with a little effort, you can connect with an old way of being more conscious when you prepare, cook and bring your food to the table.

To cook consciously means putting yourself in charge of choosing the optimum ingredients that make up what you eat. 2. Where does your produce come from?

There is only one optimum answer here, your own back garden. Zero miles, zero carriage, zero loss of nutrition. The optimum journey for your food is from the ground to your kitchen and subsequently your body in minutes. The next best option is to seek a locally grown source. This may take a little time and effort to find your nearest farm shop or grocer. Find a place that still smells of fruit and veg and is perhaps a bit chilly. Find a place where you can touch the produce, see it close up and even smell it! Find a place where you can choose what you want and put it in the bag. You find out more about the why and how and wonder of the produce. Take time to visually enjoy the shapes and colours of your fruit and vegetables. Find, within you, a deep appreciation for what you hold in your hand. Revel in the vibrant orange of an orange cleverly protected by its smooth and yet tough skin, filled with its juicy, gorgeous goodness that is vitamin C, so good for the immune system. Languish in the deep luscious green that is spinach, full of folic acid and vitamin C again vital for so many systems in the body. As you prepare the food see it in your mind’s eye, in its natural state. Visualise how it grows in the ground and draws its nutrients from the good earth. Give thanks for the constituents of vital vitamins and essential minerals, that will be utilised by your body. Be gratefully conscious. Affirm to yourself that through knowing, understanding and connecting with these key constituents you boost your immune system and nurture your well-being. Vegetables have so much health to give to us if we would only let them.

4. Take pleasure in the prep.

Too often we look for the easy way out or the easy option when it comes to preparing our food. It’s called convenience. We don’t have the time (no really, I don’t have the time!) or the inclination to peel spuds or chop carrots. The real message you send yourself and anyone who partakes in the food you opt out of preparing is actually this, you don’t have the time or the inclination to nurture yourself or them for that matter. What you are actually opting for is to dis-connect with food because there are more important things to be doing. If you want to cook consciously it is time to review your priorities. There is real pleasure to be taken in the preparation of your food and that pleasure is part of the process that helps to keep you conscious. You let the joy of knowing you are fuelling and nurturing yourself and the people you love, flow from your heart and spill into the chopping and peeling. The food you prepare becomes a beautiful expression and limitless extension of your love.

5. Sit down to eat, share, take time with and taste your food.

Eating is an exquisite pleasure. There is a multitude of tastes and flavours that we as human beings are so privileged to be able to experience. To keep that conscious connection to the incr’edible’ end means that when the food is ready to be eaten you remain in that place of deep appreciation. You take the time to let your senses be flooded by the smells, tastes and textures in your mouth. Let yourself be so moved you cannot help but comment on the sweetness of those Brussel sprouts or the vibrancy of the garlic. Share your pleasure by teaching your friends or your kids that its OK to express the gorgeousness that is exploding on your taste buds, by expressing it yourself.
