What Happens After a Blood Test?

Rhesus factor

Some women are described as having Rhesus negative blood. This can be a problem if the baby has Rhesus positive blood. During delivery, blood cells from the baby can pass into the mother's bloodstream and the mother reacts to the foreign blood cells by manufacturing antibodies to destroy them. If the mother becomes pregnant again with a Rhesus positive baby, these antibodies will pass to the baby and start to destroy his red blood cells.

So after giving birth, every Rhesus negative mother is given an injection of anti-D. This masks any of the baby's red blood cells which have got into her bloodstream, so that the mother does not manufacture antibodies against them.

Women who are Rhesus negative have their blood tested repeatedly during pregnancy to make sure that they are not forming anti¬bodies. If antibodies are found, the baby can be treated with blood transfusions while still in the uterus.

Nowadays, Rhesus negative women do not have problems if they have proper antenatal care during each of their pregnancies.

Rubella testing

If your blood sample shows that you have no immunity to rubella:

1. You will be advised to keep well away from any child or adult thought to have rubella (sometimes called German measles).

It will be suggested that you are vaccinated against rubella once your baby has been born (you then need to avoid getting pregnant for the next three months).

If your blood sample shows that you have been recently infected with rubella, you will be offered a termination of your pregnancy (abortion). This is because there is a very high risk of the baby being born with serious problems.

Anemia

If your blood tests shows that you have low levels of haemoglobin, you may:

1. Be advised to eat more foods such as bread, cereals and potatoes which are rich in iron; more fruit and vegetables which contain vitamin C and there help your body to absorb iron.

2. Be prescribed iron tablets (which, for maximum effect, should be taken with the first and last meal of the day).

All pregnant women appear to be slightly anemic because their blood is thinner than that of non-pregnant women (the same amount of red blood cells but much more diluted). Nowadays, there is a strong feeling that mild anemia during pregnancy should not be treated as thinner blood probably improves the circulation through the placenta.

Are You at Risk to Be Buried Alive?

As we sit on our sofa and watch the evening news on the television we sadly view all the destruction that has transpired in Oklahoma. Watching with intent eyes we begin to ponder the possible purchase of a safe room or storm shelter. After witnessing all the horrid deaths which have taken place we go to the internet and beginning researching these safe areas that can be built into your homestead. Naturally, our hearts go out to these families who have lost loved ones in this disaster although you may be thinking along the lines of getting either a safe room or a storm shelter. In our way of thinking we would consider this as an emergency insurance policy and in many ways we would be right in viewing it as such. We continuously see the rescue efforts from the personnel attempting to free the people from the ruble of the tornado aftermath and questions start to come to mind.

What we are not seeing are the tales relating to those people who had the foresight to purchase and install a safe room within their home prior to a disaster. Are they as safe as we may initially think? We find stories originating from Moore Oklahoma that people are now being rescued form their safe rooms or storm shelters at alarming rates. These people are essentially trapped in their shelters from all the scattered debris. In short, they are buried alive.

This certainly appears to be quite a predicament since they were responsible enough to research, invest and build their safe room or shelter. They equally made proper plans for the safety of their family in the event of an emergency such as this only to discover that they would become victims of their own endeavors.

Are we advocating the elimination of safe rooms or emergency storm shelters? Not a chance however we are suggesting a few additional survival tools being included in your preps. My family and I had encountered tornado weather when we were stationed in New Mexico, Nebraska and Kansas and if I had a choice I would have constructed either a safe room inside the basement of our home or a storm Shelter close by. I can recall being notified of approaching tornados and every eye in the neighborhood appeared to be aimed skyward as we all watched for this dreadful weather phenomenon. I know first hand at the dangers posed by tornadoes so I would never recommend the elimination of safe rooms though it would not hurt in the least to include a pick ax and sometimes a hydraulic tool kit and make sure that you know how to use these items in the event of an emergency.

While we fully understand that it is nearly impossible to completely safeguard our family and self from the destructive nature of a tornado there are some things an individual can accomplish to increase the likelihood of survival. First they can build that safe room or storm shelter we spoke earlier but before we proceed to far into our discussion let's briefly differentiate between a safe room and a storm shelter.

Although the terms are generally used synonymously they are not the same.
Typically, the safe room is located above ground and usually within the perimeter of the home. It is fortified so that in the event of an emergency people can enter the room and remain safe. This has the advantage of keeping them safe during a natural disaster or during an attempted home break in. During a tornado a safe room can add a bit of protection but is not the ideal conditions.

A safe room should have a means by which the occupants can communicate with the outside world such as a cell phone or land line. Usually, it will be equipped with a well stocked first aid kit, a flashlight, several blankets and a supply of packaged foods. If you are like me you will also want to keep several gas masks and a portable toilet on hand. A safe room built to proper code can to a degree withstand severe weather much better than the average home would. By knowing where you should build your safe room it can help you provide the most protection possible. You may wish to consider your basement, a first-floor room or in your garage.

As stated, a fortified safe room will provide a certain measure of protection which is missing from the usual home. You are much closer to your area of safety than if you had to travel to a public shelter and you will likely feel better psychologically in your own room. The major disadvantage is that since your safe room is located above-ground they are simply not viewed to be as safe as an underground option.

Storm shelters on the other hand are different from the safe rooms in several ways.

They are built underground and not within the confines of a person's home. A storm shelter is designed specifically to keep the occupants safe during any sort of inclement weather and especially when confronted with tornadoes. We find that storm Shelters are built for single family use and are generally close enough to the home so that one can quickly gain access to it however it is also far enough away that in the event of a collapsed home, the escape door would not be cover up with debris. Storm shelters should be stocked with drinking water, packaged foods, first-aid kits and a means of communication in case you need to call for help. Being built under ground the storm shelter is considered safer than a safe room which is above-ground.

The downfalls of a storm shelter are the initial cost involved. It is usually very expensive to have one built and installed. Since it is a separate building from the family's usual home the individuals must leave the home to enter the shelter. In some cases this can be dangerous for the family if done at the very last minute.

There are several items of interest that must be taken into consideration when you employ safe rooms and storm Shelters. First and high on our list is the possibility that you can become trapped in your room or shelter from the various debris which has fallen. This rubbish could prevent you from leaving your sanctuary when it is safe to.

Secondly, and just as dangerous is the thought that during an adverse condition you stand a very good chance that you may drown in your safe location as a result of a broken water main. Combine both of these possibilities together and they can spell a dangerous situation. What this is telling us is that when planning your safe room or shelter it is advantageous to use care and good sense in its construction as well as its planning.

We have already determined that the storm Shelter is superior over the safe room so if money is the primary obstacle you might wish to consider something similar to the old time root cellars from days past. Build it away from trees and other structures that could trap you in it. Maintain multiple means by which you could egress the location so that if one exit is blocked you could escape by way of the second. Above all do not forget that even though you have stocked up on food, water and various medical supplies you should also have in your tool kit a chainsaw and some sort of hydraulic lift kit to help you get out if trapped inside.

We as preppers may develop a new interest in these types of safe rooms and Shelters as a result of the disaster but we also will need to develop a good construction plan which would keep us out of arms way when the inevitable hits.

Swine Flu Virus

A Swine Flu virus has health officials around the world working to contain the growing outbreak. One out of every five residents of Mexico's most populous city wore masks to protect them against the virus as Mexico City appeared to be the epicenter of the outbreak. As many as 103 deaths have been attributed to the swine flu so far with many more feared to be on the horizon. The health department of Mexico said an additional 1,614 reported cases have been documented.

So far, however, only 18 of the deaths in Mexico have been confirmed by laboratory tests to be from swine flu virus and reported to the World Health Organization as such.

In the US preparations have been upgraded for a possible swine flu virus outbreak after 20 cases were reported, also the first cases of the virus was reported in Canada on Sunday – six mild cases.

Swine flu or Swine Influenza is a contagious respiratory sickness that is normally only found in pigs. It is caused by a type-A influenza virus. Outbreaks in pigs occur year-round. The current strain is a new variation of an H1N1 virus, which is a mix of human and animal versions.

Normaly the swine flu virus only spreads from animal to person containing the spread but when the flu spreads person-to-person, it can continue to mutate, making it harder to combat because people have no natural immunity.

The symptoms are similar to the common flu. They include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Learn more about swine flu and how to treat it in the link below.

The swine flu virus spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes around another person. People can become infected by touching something with the flu virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose or eyes.

Calling it a "public health emergency of international concern" the World Health Organization (WHO) is very concerned. The WHO also says a public health emergency is an occurrence or imminent threat of illness or health conditions caused by bioterrorism, epidemic or pandemic disease, or highly fatal infectious agents or toxins that pose serious risk to a significant number of people.

Swine Flu Virus Protection?

Advice of health experts is to follow common-sense instructions: Wash your hands, stay home if you're sick and listen to your local health authorities. Advice from the CDC about the situation is, "Very frequent hand-washing is something that we talk about time and time again and that is an effective way to reduce transmission of disease,". They also advise, "If you're sick, it's very important that people stay at home. you should not get on an airplane or another public transport to travel. Those things are part of personal responsibility in trying to reduce the impact. "

Swine Flu Symptoms

It is also noted that swine flu symptoms are relatively general and nonspecific. "So many different things can cause these symptoms." It is a dilemma, "says one doctor interviewed by CNN. "It is a challenge that we are wrestling with. There is not a perfect test right now to let a doctor know that a person has the Swine Flu." It has been noted that most individuals with Swine Flu had an early on set of fever. Also it was common to see dizziness, body aches and vomiting in addition to the common sneezing, headache and other cold symptoms.

If you become sick and notice early sunset of body aches, vomiting and dizziness you should consult with your doctor immediately. Although it is very unlucky that you have the Swine Flu virus, you should get medical confirmation just to be safe.

This Swine Flu virus outbreak could have been very dangerous epidemic or just another bump in the road. Health professionals are still trying to figure out where exactly the virus originated, how transmissible it is and why it is mild in some cases and deadlier in others. In the mean time. Wash your hands, use common sense and be on a heightened alert to signs and symptoms of the Swine Flu virus. See you doctor if any unusual flu like symptoms occurrence.

Details about your activities, your medical background and your morphology can often throw light on the reasons of your back pain complaint. Back pain can occur as the result of pathologies such as lumbago, osteoarthritis, slipped disc or sciatica. You may ask: Why am I suffering from sciatica? Sciatica Significance

There is sometimes confusion about the meaning of the term 'sciatica'. A lot of people think that sciatica refers to a specific diagnostic or elucidation of the pain source. In reality, sciatica or radiculopathy (exact medical term) describes a group of symptoms such as tingling and pains in the leg, in the buttock or even on the back of the thigh. The patient can suffer from a nagging pain that prevent him or her from standing up and can have problems to move one leg very well. The low back region can ache too. What Is Flexion Distraction?

Flexion distraction is a therapy used by chiropractors. It is often used to treat patients in chronic pain who have not responded well to other treatments. Mainly used for chronic neck pain and back pain, it has become known as the best alternative to back surgery. It uses a special type of spinal manipulation to decompress the spinal discs.

Usually, a slow, gentle spinal manipulation is used which carefully avoids using quick movements or thrusting movements that can further disalign the spell. This type of therapy uses a special type of table that is used along with the spinal manipulations in order to restore a normal range-of-motion to the upper and lower back and to the cervical area and the cervical joints. It is also used to relieve pressure placed on the inter-cranial nerves and the spinal nerves.

This is a pain-free treatment that allows the chiropractor to isolate and treat the areas of the spinal and cervical region that can cause pain and place pressure on both nerves and discs in the upper and lower back. The actions used in this treatment are thought to move potentially bulging disks away from the nerves, thus relieving pressure placed on the nerves and thus relieving pain.

What is Chiropractic Flexion Distraction?

A chiropractor uses this form of therapy to alleviate pain and pressure and to prevent painful, often debilitating back surgery. Chiropractic flexion distraction is used to treat the following symptoms and problems:

  • herniated discs
  • ruptured discs
  • bulging discs
  • sciatica
  • whiplash
  • cervical pain
  • chemical radiculitis
  • headaches and migraines

A specialized FD table is used so the chiropractor can gently stretch the spine and isolate the area of the spine and the particular discs that are giving a patient trouble. The stretching motion often causes a bulging disc or herniated disc to be visible to the eye. It will often bulge or "bubble up" under the skin. In addition, the FD table allows the patient to be counter-balanced so the chiropractor can safely and effectively perform the recommended treatment.

Although results are sometimes instantaneous, the majority of patients see results after about a month of treatment.

Flexion Distraction Technique

When a chiropractor uses FD, he or she applies a specific amount of pressure to areas and disks in the spine that should not only relate pain, but should also realign the spine and the disks as well as restore a full range of-motion. Because the touch is so light, the flexion distraction technique is suited for patients who need a light touch, such as patients who have recently been injured or who suffer from painful osteoarthritis. This technique is also used by chiropractors to help relieve the pain often experienced by those who have undergone hip or back surgery.

Additionally, it has been shown to be a safe and effective technique for relieving lower-back pain in pregnant patients. Because the touch and manipulations are so gentle, there is no risk to either the mother or the baby.

Overall, the technique is used to decompress the spelling and to adjust the spinal vertebrae and the disks between each one. It is found to be especially effective in those who suffer from some type of degenerative disc disease. The main goal of this technique is to restore the function of both the spell and the nerves.

Flexion Distraction Treatment

Patients who have successfully undergone fraction distraction treatment have reported the following benefits:

  • increased range-of-motion in the back, feet, arms, legs, shoulders, and hands
  • reduced migraines and headaches
  • improvement in posture
  • relief from lower-back pain associated with pregnancy
  • increased movement in stroke patients
  • decrease in joint pain

Flexion Distraction Therapy

Flexion distraction therapy is used over a period of time by a chiropractor. Although some patients report feeling better immediately, the majority of them do not show improvements until four weeks into treatment. After four weeks of treatment, the patient is re-evaluated. If there is not at least a 50 percent improvement in the patient, then the patient may either be sent for more imaging studies or may be sent for a special consult.

If the patient feels that at least 50 percent of the pain and problem have been reduced, then additional therapy is used. It must be understood by the patient before beginning FD therapy that recovery is a process. Without a traumatic injury was suffered, most of the symptoms and pain did not begin overnight. Just as the injury or problem gradually increased over time, treatment is a gradual, timely process.

Therapy is usually two to three times per week and most patients need at least 12 treatments before they have experienced a 50 percent increase in recovery. It is important to realize that each patient responds and heals differently, based on his or her condition.

Say and Display!

There are many different ways of greeting that obviously also convey different messages. Here in Africa some people show respect by touching their right hand with their left hand when they shake your hand. When someone does this while greeting me, it gives me a good feeling inside and I thank that person warmly for the beautiful gesture.

I like to hug people, because it shows them a piece of your heart. You show that you really care. Life is so empty and we really need to show we care, especially when we greet one another.

In his book, God praat Afrikaans, Hemelbesem explains how important greeting is in his culture (my translation):

When coloured people greet one another, it’s a looong business. It’s probably true in other cultures as well, but it’s definitely something about my people that I appreciate. Nearly all your senses become part of the greeting.

Obviously, you greet with words, but it’s as if words are not enough. It must be said and done. Say it and display it! Touching is so important for one’s existence. We share a kind of energy when we touch one another.

Wow, well said and so true. We say, “hallo” to others, ask how they are, and often don’t listen to their response. But when you greet with feeling and touching, you sort of enter into that person’s personal bubble. Where it is safe to be honest and mumble more than the usual stopgap phrase: “All good, and you?”.

For us as Christians a proper greeting is a must. Even Paul recommended it: 26Greet all the followers of Jesus there with a holy embrace.

We must greet one another warmly, i.e. whole-heartedly, with feeling, and with caring. When Christians greet one another, we wish each other spiritual and eternal peace. We know where we’re going and we confirm it in our greeting. In a way, we then also show the world that we care and are sincerely interested in one another’s wellbeing.

When we greet, we also have to bless. It’s more than good wishes and in effect a prayer that Jesus’ grace will be with that person everywhere. Therefore, I now pray with Paul for you too: May 28The amazing grace of Jesus Christ be with you!

May you spread that same greeting and blessing everywhere you go. May people be different because you touched their lives.

Scripture

1 Thessalonians 5:23-28

Reflection

Are you really interested when you greet others?

Do others experience Christ when you greet them?

To whom do you need to reach out today?

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for your abundant blessings, goodness and peace all around us. Please help me convey that to others. Amen.

Compression Pump – A Choice for Patients With Lymphedema

Compression pumps can be used on the arms or legs and they are portable and easy to take along wherever you go. They can reduce pain and swelling by moving excess fluid from the limb or limbs that are affected and returning it to the cardiovascular system. This is handy for patients who may need this treatment several times a week, allowing them to perform the therapy at home rather than making the trip to a therapist.

There are two phases required for using the compression pump. The preparatory phase is first. This prepares the lymphatic vessels for receiving fluid transported by the pump. If this part of the therapy is not completed correctly, it can cause damage to other tissues. In the home setting, self massage is the best method preparing these vessels.

The compression pump is available in two types which are recommended for treatment of lymphedema. The Sequential Gradient pump is used primarily for legs. It has an automated pump that pushes the air into a sleeve that is placed on the affected leg. The settings of the pump will allow the sleeve to inflate and then release, which is similar to the natural flow that is normally created by the body. Pushing the lymphatic fluid from the end of the leg and into the body where it can be returned to the cardiovascular system, the patient is relieved of the pain and pressure of the swollen area.

A FlexiTouch pump will perform both the preparatory phase of the treatment as well as the actual pumping that is used to return the lymphatic fluid to the body. They may be used on the arms or legs and the patient sets or reclines in the recommended position. The pump is turned on and once the preparatory phase is completed, the pump automatically begins the drainage phase. It is vital that both phases be completed at the same time. This procedure takes approximately an hour per day.

Lymphedema is a fairly common affliction from which approximately 3 million people in the US suffer. Often it is developed after a patient has radiation treatments or surgery for cancer. The most common are breast, bladder, prostate and uterine cancer. It may also develop after treatment for melanoma and lymphoma. It may also be the result of deep vein thrombosis or trauma.

When a lymph channel becomes blocked due to damage because of surgery, the lymphatic fluid can not go through the lymph vessel. This causes the fluid to build up and it does not drain properly. The compression pump helps by helping to stimulate the lymphatic fluid to drain by the use of channels that are incorporated into the garment worn. The gentle inflating and deflating helps to move the fluid back into the body.

The pump is so quiet when working that patients can read or watch television. They deliver a continuous flow and are cost effective. The control panel is simple to use by following the directions included with the compression pump. Before using the pump it will require that the garment and the pump settings be adjusted. They are different for each patient and should be adjusted according to the instructions of the patient's therapist. If you order your pump, the machine may or may not be customized to your specific settings.

PHN (Post-Herpetic Neuralgia) Pain Relief Remedy at Hand

If one had Chicken Pox, chances are good that he was infected with Shingles disease too. Post-herpetic neuralgia is a pain than succeeds the Singles disease – after the rashes from the same heal. The worst part is that once you have shingles, you can never cure it but can follow correct treatment procedures to avoid further outbreak of the disease.

Shingles generally does not affect people who are less than 60 years old, but is more commonly seen in the ages of 80 and upwards. But then, it is a general case and may affect the younger lot too! Therefore it is important that you do not become complacent and negligent about this disease and follow the prescribed treatment in case you have contracted PHN.

It is estimated that approximately 20% of the people who develop the herpes zoster are affected by PHN in the US alone. People younger than 60 rarely develop PHN after a bout of shingles but more than 40% of the people older than 60 years do. The PHN attacks the skin and gives rise to excruciating pain that may niggle you for days or even years (only if left untreated). The dangerous thing is that the herpes zoster may virus can cause irreparable damage to your nerves during the outbreak.

PHN Pin Relief

Natural Remedies include the consumption of foods that are rich in proteolytic enzymes. Foods such as the papaya is a rich source of proteolytic enzymes and can help heal Shingles faster. A dilute solution of apple cider vinegar if applied onto the affected area with the help of sterilized cotton helps to heal the rashes – but cure of the pain aftermath the healing is no guarantee.

This is where comes the most effective PHN non-narcotic pain relief product – Menastil which has been developed by the Centre for Pain Relief.

Menastil releases some anti-inflammatory chemicals which stop the progress of the virus and then treat the pain.

It is available as both topical and oral applications. Obviously, the topical application will heal the pain faster and effectively than the oral ones, which may take some time to heal the pain.

Flip-Side

Though the drug is the best at present, its effective long term usage without any side-effects is yet to be seen. As for now, the only side effect that it has is that it facilitates minor constipation and restricts bowel movement. Along with this, suitable lactobacillus prescriptions are recommended.

Complications That Arise From Untreated Strep Throat

When you get a sore throat, besides feeling miserable you may not do anything. However, just to warn you, it may be strep throat, which should not be taken lightly. There are several complications that can arise from untreated strep throat. Some of them include coronary heart disease, rheumatic fever and kidney problems.

Thanks to the invention of antibiotics, strep throat is no longer fatal as it was decades ago. Antibiotics allow strep throat to be treated so that complications do not arise. But many people fear use of antibiotics. Untreated strep throat can lead to scarlet fever or tonsillitis.

Many people who do not treat strep throat risk ear infections, sinusitis, mastoiditis (infection of the mastoid process, a part of the skull behind the ear, glomerulonephritis (infection of the blood vessels in the kidneys) and peritonsillar abscess (collection of pus near Egypt along the tonsils).

Remember, strep throat is contagious and if someone in the family has it, the chances of other family members getting the infection are very high. Strep throat is spread through close contact, sneezing and coughing.

You certainly will not be happy with a strep throat considering that you will be suffering from swollen lymph nodes, swollen and painful tonsil, cough and fever. Strep throat is often mistaken for a sore throat but you should leave the diagnosis to a qualified doctor. Rather than bear the discomfort and risk complications, it is best to visit a doctor and get proper treatment for this bacterial infection.

The Effects of Lupus at Ocular Level

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a very complex disease that can affect multiple regions of the body, causing a wide range of symptoms. Although the systemic form of lupus can affect virtually any organ system of the human body, the disease commonly involves impairments of the eye. In patients with lupus, the ocular globe itself (eyeball) is affected more often than the ocular orbit (eye socket). When the ocular orbit is also affected, lupus leads to serious inflammation of the conjunctive membrane, soft tissue that covers the eyeball and interior lid. The lids may also become swollen and this type of ocular disease often involves the occurrence of local edema.

Lupus commonly determinates the occurrence of "cotton wool spots" at the level of the retina. The spots are actually edematous regions of the retina, occurring as a result of inappropriate blood flow and thus, poor oxygenation of the eye. Despite the fact that the occurrence of "cotton wool spots" on the retina is not a direct indicator of lupus in middle-aged and older patients, it clearly reveals the presence of the disease in young patients. Other eye affections characteristic to lupus involve accumulation and deposition of fat cells at the level of the retina, decrease in the arteriolar blood flow and even pronounced obstruction of the eye blood vessels, which often determines loss of visual acuity or temporary blindness.

Patients diagnosed with systemic lupus are often confronted with keratoconjunctivitis sicca as well (also known as the dry eye syndrome), eye disorder that predominately inflates individuals with autoimmune diseases. This type of eye disorder generates symptoms such as pronounced discomfort, inflammation, itching and burning at ocular level, and often leads to impairments of the lacrimal glands, resulting in reduced tears. On the promises of eye dryness and inappropriate blood circulation, the eye rapidly becomes inflamed and irritated, also increasing the risks of infections.

When keratoconjunctivitis sicca is accompanied by arthritis and symptoms such as dryness of the mucosal linings in the mouth and nose, the disease is referred to as Siogren's Syndrome. When systemic lupus determinates impairments at brain level, the disease causes deterioration of the optic nerve, nystagus (uncontrolled movements of the eye) and even complete blindness. In order to prevent the development of such complications and to reverse the effects of lupus at ocular level, it is imperative to administer the appropriate treatment as soon as possible.

Commonly used medications in treating the ocular complications produced by systemic lupus are salicylates (aspirin-based medications), antimalarials (commonly used medicines include chloroquine-aralen, plaquenil and resochin), antibiotics and steroids. Steroid medications are extensively used in treating eye disorders characteristic to lupus, cortisone drugs being considered an efficient form of treatment at present. However, steroids can produce serious side-effects in patients with lupus, and so such forms of treatment are not recommended for long-term use.

What about Seizures?

Seizures have been an important part of my life since I was 3 years years old. At birth, it was believe that the forceps were responsible for lesions in the brain. At the tender age of three, I fell down the stairs, hitting the top of my head three times before my dad could catch me. This event was the major event that triggered it all. A week later, I was diagnosed with tonic clonic Epilepsy also known as "Grand Mal".

Seizures and brain damage

My mother told me that my longest period of seizures lasted approximately 1 h hour. It is quite alarming as any neurologist will tell you that brain damage occurs following a period of seizures lasting 30 minutes or more.

Treatments of seizures

In these days, Epilepsy treatments were quite new which explains the basic basic care and methods. For example, the medication that I was taking was not monitored until I reached 10 years of age. It was then changed as my new neurologist realized that the medication that I had been using was too strong for an adult, never mind a child. It also explained that the first 10 years of my life are a blur with few memories. My family is actually the one filling me in mostly about what happened in my life during this decade.

EEG (Electro Encephalogram) was also basic and closer to an instrument of torture than actually a significant medical tool to detect unusual brain activity or damages. Then, they used small needles to directly connect the wires to the machines while now, miniature rubber connectors are glued to your scalp which are pain free.

Seizures and the social aspect related to them

There was also the social aspect of the seizures. You see, in the 1960's and 1970's, people did not know much about seizures disorders such as Epilepsy. So instead of acknowledging their lack of information concerning this disorder of the brain, they used to make up their own concluding such as: possession by the devil, being mentally challenged or handicapped and so on. My own grandmother convinced my mother to make me pray every night say that I suffered from seizures because I was paying for my parents' sins. My own father still considers this subject taboo as he feet responsible for not catching me right away when I fell down the stairs. Later on, because of my hormonal changes at puberty, I "grew out of it" and was able to live without any medication.

Pseudo seizures

Later on, I developed pseudo seizures which was caused by extreme stress endured at work where I was professionally and sexually abused. What are pseudo seizures? It is basically a reaction to stress by your body but it is not related to brain damage and does not need any medical attention coupled learning how to cope with stress, sometimes by seeing a psychiatrist or a counselor of some sort.

Autism and seizures

Then later on, my worst nightmare became reality. My five years old son, who is suffering from Autism just like his little sister, was diagnosed with Epilepsy. I have learned a lot about seizures through experience but witnessing your child having seizures, is the worst thing you can ever go through. When he had his first seizures, about eleven months ago, he was diagnosed at first with febrile seizures since his trigger happens to be sudden high fevers and do not cause brain damage. Following an EEG during the last summer, the results revealed that his brain displayed unusual activity in certain areas of the brain. Also, having Autism and given my history, the neurologist told me that he had 50% chances of suffering from Epilepsy. She also said that as high as 30% of children with Autism also are affected by a seizures disorder.

Possible causes of seizures

Since then, I did a lot of research and I discovered other sources that may cause someone to suffer from seizures. For example, Diabetes, stress, shock, an accident, brain injury, Epilepsy can be the guilty parties.

What can you do when someone has seizures?

What should you do if you witness someone having seizures? First, ask someone to call for help. Make sure that people stay away to allow you to give the proper care to the person. Loosen clothing items such as shirts, belts, etc. Do not put anything in the person's mouth, especially your fingers. Make sure that the person can not fall or hit something in the area and move all potentially dangerous objects. Do not restrain the person during the seizures as both of you could be hurt in the process. Time each seizure and write it down if possible.

When the person is calm, put him in the recovery position which is basically on the side with the arms and legs that are opposed to the floor on the ground to prevent the person of either rolling on his back or his stomach. This position will allow the person to breathe more easily of vomit in certain cases. Monitored the breathing and check the pulse. Notice any details such as the color of the skin especially around the mouth, frothing, as it will be relevant and helpful to the emergency staff as well as in the hospital. Never leave the person unattended even to reach a phone as anything could happen.

Seizures affect so many people's lives. Doing some research about them allowed me to understand them more and see them as they are instead of focusing on how scary they can appear to be to people. When treated, anyone suffering from a seizures disorder can have a normal life so instead of seeing only the problem; why not focus on the possible solutions?

Use Suspense to Get Your Readers Engaged in Your Story

The element of suspense if something readers love. It may be heavy, and it can also be light, but when you add it into your story, your readers will keep reading until they get to the resolution. And is not that what you want?

But my biography, or my non-fiction book on train spotting does not need suspense, surely? Oh, yes it does. But more about that later.

Let's consider the two most usual types of suspense.

First there is the 'signpost' suspense. This is where something happens, or is said, or is described that hints at some exit, pleasant or unpleasant, in the future. Here is an example:

'I was shown into a dimly lit room. On one wall hung a painting. It was grimed with age, but I could make out the shapes of two people, a man and a woman. The man was holding a short sword in one hand, and as I looked, I felt a strange uneasiness creep over me. Why this was so I could not tell just then, but I wanted to leave that room and never come back. '

The reader will get the message that something about this painting forbodes ill for the future in the story. Notice the phrase 'just then', this tells the reader that later he or she did find out. It's a signpost, a hint of dark things to come. Your readers will keep reading to find out what it's all about.

Next there is the 'up to their eyes' suspense. The Indiana Jones stories, as well as many others, show the hero or heroine 'up to their eyes' in some desperate physical situation that is life threatening, or at the very least may seriously damage their health. Impossible car chases and underground paths filled with rats come to mind. If you want to keep your readers frantically turning pages you need to keep them in trouble situations through in order to build up the suspense.

Sometimes the suspense is a little less fraught with physical danger. For instance in a romance story you can keep your readers in a state of agitation which hangs on when the heroine is going to marry the rich squir or turn him down for the penniless farmers son.

What about the biography or non-fiction book? Believe it or not, the same applies to them. For example:

'When I was 17 I longed to join the Army and fight for my country. So I went down to the recruiting office, lied about my age, and got enlisted. If only I had known what this decision would have made to my life and to that of my parents, I would never have been so rash. '

You can see that readers will want to find out how this decision changed all those lives.

'One of the most serious forms of blight is orange spot. Many gardeners say it can not be cured but I'm going to let you into my own secret cure later in this chapter. '

It's a good idea to plan at what point the suspense occurs and at what point it is resolved. In all probability the object of suspense and it's resolution in a short story may be the reason for the story in the first place. In a book you may want to have a series of suspenseful situations through. Make sure these suspenseful episodes vary in intensity, though, as we do not want readers in a state of near apoplexy from cover to cover!

How to Reduce Your Risk of Stroke

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in America. In addition, it leads all other conditions as the cause of serious and long term disability. A stroke happens when a blood vessel bringing blood and oxygen to the brain ruptures or becomes blocked. When this happens, brain cells lose the ability to receive the flow of blood that they need to live … they die within minutes.

Time is imperative if you have suffered a stroke. The effects of a stroke can become permanent if help is not looked out immediately.

Here are some ways to reduce your risk of having a stroke:

1. Control your blood pressure. High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke. Most pharmacies offer free blood pressure checks if you think your blood pressure may be too high.

2. Manage your cholesterol. Good cholesterol is known as HDL and bad cholesterol is called LDL. The sum of both of these cholesterol numbers should fall below 200. If your numbers are out of range you should speak with your doctor about ways to improve your numbers.

3. Make healthy lifestyle choices. Simple lifestyle changes are another way to lower your risk of having a stroke. Smoking is a prime example of this. Quitting smoking is not an easy task. Make a commitment to it and seek out the type of methods that will help you cut back and then stop completely. Eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and taking a thirty minute walk every day will also improve the quality of your health.

A stroke must be treated within 3 hours of the sunset of symptoms. If you think that you may have suffered a stroke call 9-1-1 immediately. It is better to be safe than sorry.
