One Foot in Heaven

I have been accused of living my life with one foot in Heaven, my eyes focused on another country, my ears cocked to hear the sound of the trump of God (1 Thessalonians 4:16). My response has always been, "I certainly hope so!" I have taken seriously Paul's assurance in 2 Timothy 4: 8 (NIV) that there is a crown of correcteousness awaiting those who long for his appearance.

As a result, I often feel I'm in a strangely foreign environment, as though I had taken up life under the sea, far from equipped to exist in that alien atmosphere. I can not take breath into my lungs as the natural inhabitants of the depths so easily can. I must get necessary oxygen through a tube from another realm. (John 8:23; John 15:19)

This should be no surprise since when we are reborn, we are recreated to breathe a rarefied air, no longer able to survive the putrid atmosphere of the world, which is slowly destroying all who attempt to draw life from it, even those native to it . Notwithstanding, I have never felt I was left on my own in this hostile environment. Instead, it has been clear to me that I am here for a reason, on a Mission and that when I am attentive, remaining focused, I will be led every step of the way. Indeed, the Holy Spirit has communicated with me as often as I have been willing to provide an atmosphere conducive to hearing His voice.

I have kept each of these precious communications in my heart, some for years. Occidentally it has been clear to me that they were intended as the basis for a Bible Minute (Karin's one minute Bible reflections) or to be used for the benefit of others in counseling or coaching situations. But for the most part, they have been treasured evidences that my heavenly Father desires to be closely involved in my life, not only on a "grand plan" scale, but on a day to day basis as well.

Be wise when it comes to personal words you believe to be from the Holy Spirit. Check each against the written Word of God. Because the Word and God are One (John 1: 1), the Holy Spirit will never speak a personal message to you that is at cross purposes with the Word. Were it possible, that would make God either schizophrenic or a liar! And we know that God is not a man that He should lie. (Numbers 23:19) We know too that changing is not an option for Him. (Hebrews 13: 8) From the beginning He has assured us that He is God and He changes not. (Malachi 3: 6)

So take your confirmed Word from the Holy Spirit and confidently step out wherever it leads you and know that in so doing, He will never leave you nor forsake you, assured of living as significantly as He has planned you to. Keep your eyes on Him, your ears attuned to His Word and one foot in that Heavenly country.

Recently in a discussion with a friend about diet and food choices, I was asked what principles do you base your over all diet on? My answer was whole food and fresh food.

In the past, (say 60 or 70 years ago) these principals for choosing what food to eat were far less relevant. Before the industrial revolution and the industrialization of food production, most of the food available to most people was generally whole foods and mostly fresh. When food became industrialized and combined with the single minded quest for maximum profit, a large portion of the foods available to people changed. No longer was most available food, whole food and fresh food. Instead it is processed, with added ingredients put in to the foods that has very little or nothing to do with nutrition and health benefits.

The new redesigned processed foods which are also know as "edible food like substances", are in fact not whole or fresh food, many of these redesigned foods are not really food at all. The ingredients that have been added are to make food more profitable. They are added for shelve life, appearance and taste. Preservatives, cheap ingredients as fillers, chemicals and lots of sugar and salt are added to create or enhance taste. Substances like high fructose corn syrup and other laboratory created substances primarily from corn are added along with trans fats, the most unhealthy form of fat. These "edible food like substances" are in much of the available processed and packaged food choices in everyday super markets and these foods are part of the causes of the type 2 diabetes and obesity epidemic.

Isolated synthetic vitamins are also added to most processed foods. The human body generally does not easily recognize these kinds of isolated vitamins. So, our bodies often do not benefit. Vitamins present in whole food is the form that the body recognizes more readily, and utilizes most efficiently.

* So what does eating a whole food and fresh food diet look like:

* Eat mostly fresh foods, like fresh fruits and fresh veggies.

* Eat more fish, especially small fish, more on that later. We need our omega's but not mercury and not fish raised in a pen and fed corn derived substances.

* Whole foods mean, whole grains like, brown rice, basically grains that are not processed, hulls not removed etc. Buy the real original non manipulated grains.

* Eat as much raw fresh foods as you can, when you cook your vegetables cook them lightly with steam whenever possible, this keeps the nutrition.

* Cut back on regular potatoes (they are like eating sugar once they are getting digested), choose sweet potatoes instead.

* Do not fry, choose to steam, poach, bake. Use low heat whenever possible.

* Eat enzyme supplements to get the nutrition in the food digested, distributed and used properly. The more cooked food you eat, the more you need an enzyme supplement.

* Eat more antioxidant-rich foods, including orange and yellow vegetables, dark green leafy vegetables (kale, collards, spinach, etc.), (berries, beets, pomegranates), and purple grapes containing trans-resveratrol, blueberries, bilberries, cranberries , and cherries. In fact, antioxidants are found in all colorful fruits and vegetables.

* Eat fiber, it further helps to stabilize blood sugar by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates and supports a healthy digestive system. Try to gradually increase fiber to 30 to 50 grams a day and include soluble or viscous fiber (legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, vegetables, and fruit), which slows sugar absorption from the gut.

Stay away from processed food as much as possible. Choose not to buy foods with twenty ingredients, most of which you have never heard of. Carefully check the ingredients of packaged foods to make sure the killer "edible food like substances" are not present.

Since it is not always easy to get, cook and eat unaltered whole foods and fresh foods, you should consider eating concentrated whole food supplements. Know as super foods. When I realized that it was my mind that was keeping me awake until 1AM – 2AM, I decided I had to do something about it. What did I do? How did I solve the problem? What I did was make a deal with my brain. The deal was that when it was time to go to sleep I would take all my problems, worries and fears out of my brain and set them down on the nightstand next to my bed. I promised my brain that all my problems, worries and fears would still be there on the nightstand in the morning when I woke up and I would pick all my problems up off the nightstand, put them back in my brain, and my brain could start spinning and racing and worried all over again. After a few nights of trying this it began to work. I fooled my brain. I trained my brain. Now, when it was time to go to sleep, I was able to lay down, put my problems and worries and fears aside, and go to sleep. And in the morning, I was refreshed and ready to face the day. That was decades ago and since then, when I get into bed, I lay down my troubles. And have no trouble going to sleep at night.

In addition, I learned something else; a lot of the things I worried about at night disappeared or lessened when I went to pick them up off the nightstand the next morning.

When it's time to go to sleep, the day is finished. Put your worries down. When day is done and it's time for sleep, there is nothing more you can actually do right now about your existing problems, worries and fears. Put them down on the nightstand, or if you prefer, place an empty box next to your bed to put your problems in at night. Do not worry, all your problems, worries and fears will still be there in the morning. Or not. Meanwhile, you can go to sleep.

And, if you wish, you can even write down your worries on a piece of paper and physically put them in the box. And, in the morning, you can once again pick them up. Or not.

As for the box, any empty box will do. Any color. It may help if the box has a lid and you can leave it open to easily put in your worries, problems and fears. No, it does not have to be a large box. Unless you have a LOT of worries.
