Herniated Disc Back Pain

Herniated disc back pain is a dreaded occurrence for many dorsopathy sufferers. The actual words "herniated disc" are enough to cause anxiety and worry over possible agony, surgery and disability. In reality, the spinal disc is a much maligned structure, rarely responsible for the plethora of painful conditions typically blamed on it. This is due to the extremely common nature of disc bulges and ruptures, as well as the universality of disc degeneration.

Herniated discs can occur anywhere in the spine, but they are usually found at either end. The cervical spine, also known as the neck, is an area which must bend and flex constantly, as well as hold up the significant weight of the head. The next possible source of herniated disc back pain is due to spinal stenosis. This is diagnosed when the disc applies pressure to the actual spinal cord, narrowing the spinal canal through which the cord passes. Many cases of spinal stenosis are completely asymptomatic, while incidentally, this condition can be a real problem. The most symptomatic measures of spinal stenosis exist when bone spurs (osteophytes) are the source of the narrowed canal and most disc bulges simply do not create any noticeable effect on the cord.

The third way that herniated disc back pain may be explained is from chemical radiculitis. This is when the proteins from the interior of the disc bleed out of the damaged disc structure and irritate surrounding nerve tissue. This is a controversial diagnosis and is not readily accepted in many medical sectors. It seems that if this condition does indeed exist, it only affects some people with particularly sensitive nerve tissue, since many people suffer severe ruptures and experience no pain at all.

The last possible explanation for disc related back pain is the unusual diagnosis of discogenic pain. In this condition, the damaged disc is said to be the actual source of discomfort, which makes little sense, since intervertebral discs do not have nerves or even a dedicated blood supply. Instead, they are nourished through the cartilaginous end plates which attach the disks to the surrounding upper and lower vertebral bones. Some doctors believe it is the tiny nerves in these endplates which are painful, but that seems very unquestionably since most patients report pain which is far too great and widespread to be sourced from such tiny and anatomically limited neurological tissues.

In the end, most patients do not enjoy relief from a wide range of conservative treatments or even surgeries directed at herniated discs and degenerative disc disease. This has nothing at all to do with the talent of the doctor or the method of treatment. Instead, therapy fails since the diagnosis is completely wrong. Statistics show that herniated discs are often completely asymptomatic and even those which do cause trouble usually resolve with or without treatment in 6 to 8 weeks. When it comes to highlighting pictures on the wall – this might seem like a simple task of just attaching a picture light, but often getting the display lighting just right for a picture can prove to be a very difficult task.

The fundamental thing to consider is not just the picture and beam of the picture light but the actual wall you are going to mount your pictures on. Preferably, the wall you are going to display pictures on should not have windows (nor should there be any windows on the wall adjacent) because the glare from the natural light outside is going to distort your appreciation of the portrait.

The major problem with displaying portraits and pictures is that the glass covering (which some have) can reflect light and interfere with your viewing of the picture. This is also true of paintings created using glossy oil paint. The best way to overcome this is to position your light source in such a way as will reduce reflective glare. Whilst dark paintings will require more light than lighter colored paintings, watercolors are quite sensitive and need careful monitoring when display lighting is used. The same goes for oil paintings, although they are sturdier than watercolors.

The best way to illuminate a picture is to use a special fitting that has tungsten strip lighting and that mounts onto the wall just above the picture or actually onto the frame itself. This is an effective way of angling the tungsten strip light to a position in which you get minimal glare.
If you want to display the whole portrait and not just the top or bottom part of it, you will need a light that is 2/3 (or greater) than the width of the picture. And of course, the further away the light source is from the picture the larger the width of the light beam.

Where you have a large group of pictures on one wall, wall-washing may be a better way of highlighting them all.
This is best achieved by using small uplighters, or a row of recessed downlights or using a hidden fluorescent strip (hidden inside a coving unit or something similar).

Spotlights are another popular alternative and their advantage is that they can be used much further away from the picture (so the risk of heat damage is minimized). Ceiling-mounted spotlights or track mounted are both effective, although the latter is more flexible.

Causes of Seizures

Epilepsy is a group of disorders in which there are recurrent episodes of altered cerebral function associated with a seizure. The clinical manifestation of these seizures varies in effect from brief lapses of awareness to prolonged bouts of unconsciousness, lim jerking and incontinence.

There is no clear cause of seizures in many cases. However, in up to 40% of people with epilepsy there is a family history of epilepsy in a close relative. Genetic factors are there before a strong feature in the cause of seizures.

Lesions and seizures

Lesions (caused by either disease or injury) which involve the cerebral cortex are also likely to cause seizures. Partial seizures have the highest incidence of a detectable cortical lesion. This is particularly the case when the lesion is in the temporal lobe. Lesions can be caused by disease, brain damage at any age, meningitis, encephalitis and brain abscess, cerebrovascular disorders (such as stroke), cerebral tumors and degenerative diseases of the brain. However, it is also true that around three-quarters of patients with epilepsy have no evidence of an underlying lesion.

What can precipitate seizures?

A number of precipitating factors may provoke a fit in susceptible people or exacerbate established epilepsy. For example, causes can include sleep deprivation, hyperventilation, hypoglycemia and antidepressant drugs. Other factors which are also proven to provoke fits include alcohol and drug ingestion or withdrawal, high fever, anoxia, physical and mental exhaustion, a flickering light, visual patterns, and even procurement to television screens. Uncommon triggers for a seizure include loud noise, hot baths, music or reading.

Single seizures

Sometimes there can be a single seizure associated with some of these factors, such as a spike in temperature, alcohol use or drug withdrawal. It has been found that children with epilepsy were five times more likely to have psychiatric disorder than children with chronic handicaps not affecting the brain.

I got a phone call from a magazine writer who was working on a story. Turns out that Stanford University put out a research study looking at what barriers exist for women in the corporate world. They talked to something like 1,000 of their MBA grades – not new grads, but people who went through Stanford over many years – and asked them what was keeping women out of the top ranks of corporations. Here's what they reported:

There is no glass ceiling. Women themselves are opting out of the top jobs, for lifestyle reasons or because they do not want the pressure.

So, asked the writer, "What do you think about that?"

Have you ever heard a person sputter on the phone? That's what I did. I could not find words for a moment.

"Bleeping brilliant!" I said. "That is magnificent – there is no glass ceiling, it's we ourselves who are opting out of senior leadership roles because, you know, there's so much pressure. that they may be spending on their high-potential women, and stop wringing their hands when women in senior roles bail at the next-to-highest rung of the ladder. "

He laughed, either in sympathy or amusement at my apoplexy, or both. Now mind you, I have not seen the study, so I'm one degree removed from the agreements (much less the data), but here's my take on the notification that women opt out of senior leadership spots rather than being kept out of them by their leaders:

Yes – we do. We leave. Because of the pressure? Oh, give me a break. Not because of the pressure – because of BS level that comes with the territory.

Think about senior-level roles in corporations these days. I do not think that there are more politics in actual politics than there are in major corporations. It's a tough way to live – watching your back, attending to your alliances, spouting the party line and fighting your battles behind the scenes. Generally I stay away from sweeping generalizations about one gender or the other. But I feel comfortable saying this: women have a lower threshold for idiotic, posturing, political, inauthentic behavior, day in and day out. Women have a cognitive dissonance alarm that gets louder and louder day by day so that they finally conclude, "This is not me. I can not keep doing this. I can not keep my mouth shut, go along, and play the good soldier for one more day, much less another fifteen years until retirement. " And that's just it – they're done.

They blow the whistle, like Sherron Watkins did at Enron, or they just take off. Can not take the pressure? Are you kidding me? Women who make it to the next-to-the-top rung of the ladder, the ones who are even in the position to decide between sticking it out and leaving, have already taken more pressure than most guys can even comprehend. They've smoked at enough gratuitous comments – walked the tightrope between telling the truth and drinking the company Kool-Aid – and slashed their way through enough uncharted territory to write a best-selling novel, or two. The most senior women I know are uniformly tough, articulate, smart, and incredibly flexible – they would not have survived the last twenty years of corporate life any other way.

So why do they leave? Because they look at that top spot and say, It's not worth it. There is nothing there that I need, and the cost – to myself, to my family, to my relationships – is too high. It's not the blasted pressure! It's the internal compass that says, Enough. Can women run corporations successfully? Of course they can. But so many corporations do not hold enough promise, enough room to mature, to evolve, to be the types of places that successful women want to run, that the grass is simply greener in too many other places. At home, with kids or horses or whatever stirs you. In a startup venture, writing a novel, or starting a foundation for Somalian children. The need to be in control does not always overcome the need to do something important and useful, plus the need to be herself, and so the women depart. Wimps!

If I were a CEO looking at this study, I would say, This is wrong. If women truly are leaving corporations at the point of the pyramid just below the tip, that's a waste. We hired them, we trained them and entrusted big chunks of the business to them, and now we've lost them, so something is clearly amiss. Are not our customers women? Are not ourholders women, and do not we believe, on the evidence and in our guts, that women should help run this organization? So what is happening internally here that is turning them off, and how do we fix it?

That's the takeaway I'd love to see from this study. Let's not conclude,

There's no glass ceiling, so if women are leaving our organizations, what can we do about it? Oh well – better get back to work.

Let's say instead,

If the barrier is not made of glass, but rather some toxic chemical that women will not expose themselves to, let's get rid of it and clean up our act. After all, if something is noxious to women, can it be healthy for anyone?

What Are the Causes of Stroke – Major Factors That Cause Stokes

The largest cause of stroke is hypertension, or high blood pressure. It is characterized by readings of 140/90 and above. Hypertension causes damage to the major organs, such as the kidneys, heart, and eyes. It can also cause weakened areas in the blood vessels to burst, leading to the leakage of blood into the brain. This results in hemorrhagic stroke.

When vessels narrow and shut off blood supply, this is an Ischemic stroke. It is caused by plaque build up in the treaties or a blood clot that grows to indeed block the artery preventing blood flow to the rest of the brain. These blood clots can come from another part of the body or form in the artery itself.

A clot that breaks off and travels to another part of the body is called an embolism. Atrial fibrillation is a risk factor for these types of clots, due to the rapid contractions, or fluttering of the atria, resulting in formation of blood clots.

Blood clots that form in the artery (thrombus) are usually found on plaque deposits. Cracks develop in the plaque causing cells to adhere to it forming a blood clot. The clot then grows in size as more cells accumulate, leading to blocking off the artery to blood flow. This causes tissue on the other side of the blockage to be depleted of oxygen rich blood and nutrients, leading to cell death and ischemia. The result is a stroke. This is the same mechanism that exists in heart attack, only it involves the heart.

Hemorrhagic: Bleeding into the brain caused by a Ruptured blood vessel.
Ischemic: Caused by narrowed or enclosed treaties due plaque deposits.

Alopecia Areata Treatment

There are two main forms of this condition which varies by the amount of hair loss and require different types of alopecia areata treatment. The mild form is where less than 50% of the hair is lost from thinning patches on the scalp and the more severe condition where more than 50% up to 100% of the hair is lost.

When diagnosing alopecia areata it is useful to have some background information about the disease. Alopecia areata is known as an autoimmune condition that can be highly unpredictable and which affects about 1.7% of the population. The body's white blood cells attack the hair follicles resulting in a stop in growth. It usually starts with one or two small round bald patches on the scalp, but can develop into a complete loss of hair, both on the scalp (alopecia totalis) and body (alopecia universalis). It is not known what triggers such attacks, whether the trigger coming from within, or from outside such as in the form of a virus.

Recent research seems to show that some people have genetic markers that increase both their susceptibility to the condition and to its severity. One in five people with the condition will have a relative who is also affected. This is especially true in those who develop the condition before the age of 30. It is more common in families which members also have conditions such as asthma, hay fever, eczema, thyroid disease, Addison's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, vitiligo, Addison's disease or pernicious anemia.

The condition occurs in people of all ages and races and can have huge psychological effects which are exacerbated by the fact that the public at large do not generally understand this condition. It is sudden in sunset and can recur from time to time quite unpredictably.

There is no known cure for alopecia areata and hair loss is a side effect of the underlying disease. Current alopecia areata treatments therefore work by intensive stimulation of the hair follicles which needs to be continued for the duration of the disease.

The mild form of the disease is easier to treat and the most common form of treatment is to have monthly cortisone injections, injected directly into the bare scalp. These are usually quite painless giving a slight tingling sensation and have very few side effects such as minor skin depressions. This alopecia areata treatment is usually complimented with higher strength 5% topical minoxidil solution applied twice daily. Cortisone cream is sometimes used in combination with minoxidil for improved response and applied 30 minutes after the minoxidil application.

Another effective treatment is anthralin cream or ointment, a synthetic, tar-like substance widely used for psoriasis treatment. It is applied to the bare scalp once daily and as it can be a skin irritant is usually only left on for 30-60 minute periods then washed off. Successful treatments can stimulate new hair growth in eight to twelve weeks.

Extensive alopecia areata is much more difficult to treat and local injections of cortisone into the scalp are not that effective. In some cases cortisone pills are prescribed, these have a more powerful effect but there is a greater risk of side effects with extended use. In general they are not strictly prescribed apart from to young healthy adults who may have higher tolerance levels for the drug. Topical minoxidil at 5% strength is still the most common alopecia areata treatment and effective even for intensive alopecia areata. Another method that is used frequently in Canada and Europe is known as topical immunotherapy. This uses the chemicals diphencyprone (DPP) or squaric acid dibutyl ester (SADBE) to induce an allergic rash in the scalp. To date topical immunotherapy has been show to be the most effective alopecia areata treatment with 40% of patients regrowing hair after six months of treatment.

Sufferers of alopecia areata should not give up hope of a cure as there are many ongoing research projects are currently being undertaken.
