It was not the first time our cat had brought a surprise back with her. It was not even the first time she had greeted in a live bird. Perhaps it was that she released it in the bedroom instead of the basement or living room (her usual places to set her prey loose).

I think what really surprised me the most was the size of the bird that was now flying in a panic around my bedroom.

Over the years, with two female housecats who we let outdoors a couple of hours each day, we have had our share of rabbits, mice or other rodent, and birds enter our home. Most of the time they are still alive, scared, but for the most part, unharmed. Cats who are adequately fed do not hunt for food, they hunt for fun, and so they usually do not eat the animals / birds they capture. They usually bring them to the humans as a present or to show that they had something something.

Being a Healer, I know the importance of helping these animals and birds overcome their shock before releasing them, as it is the shock that often kills them, not any injury they may have sustained.

So the bird that was currently flying around the bedroom was just the newest bird requiring my attention.

Unfortunately, that was also going to be a BIG problem. I was used to helping little sparrows that frequented our backyard and the neighbor's birdfeeders. This bird was a lot bigger-in fact, he was a predator himself. He was a hawk.

I have to admit that my close interactions with hawks have been lacking. I think the closest I ever came to one was when one was in a tree eyeing a dead bird nearby. Still, the bird was a lot farther away from the one that now stood on my dresser looking like it would attack anyone or anything that moved.

Normally I would have let the bird calm down a bit before approaching him, but it had been injured by my cat as I saw blood on the floor and walls where the hawk had flown. It was enough blood to suggest that waiting was not a good idea if I wanted him to survive.

But there were those talons. And there was that sharp, pointed beak.

And those little eyes were watching every move I made.

I closed the bedroom door to contain his flight then grabbed a small blanket to throw over him. It worked. The bird could not fly. I donned leather gloves and sunglasses (for protection) then lifted the bundle, careful to hold the feet. With my husband's help, I was able to examine the bird without injury to either of us. He had a little cut on his back and one of his wings was missing a few bigger feathers. Both wounds were bleeding.

As I found no other wounds that were of immediate concern, I gave the bird the homeopathic medicine Aconitum napellus ("Aconite") for the shock. Aconite works great to calm shock in animals as well as humans. I've used it before on traumatized animals and birds, and when responding to auto accidents.

When the remedy had calmed the bird, I cleaned the cuts then washed him the homeopathic medicine Gunpowder to stem infections. I banded his wing so it would not move for transport to the Wildlife Sanctuary. For rehab, they would do a great job.

But alas, they were closed, so the hawk was brought home and put in the bathroom for the night-it was quiet and there was not anything the hawk could hurt himself on should he wander around. He looked a LOT better than he had before he was given the homeopathics.

The next morning, the bird was doing great, but I still was not sure about the wing. I removed the bandage from his wing, lifted him up and allowed him to fly-he did not do so good-so I took him to the Sanctuary for further care.

The hawk was probably the size of my cat and I wondered how she had gotten the jump on him. Marin (my cat) had no injuries, which was surprising considering the hawk was a predator that would prey on cats. Perhaps, being that the hawk was small, he was not a threat to Marin.

The hawk was released from the Wildlife Sanctuary a few days later. The rehab assistant had been surprised that the bird had not arrived to the Sanctuary in shock, and did not develop an infection and was able to be released so quickly. I was not surprised, however, because I knew the healing abilities of homeopathy.

I wondered the stories the hawk would tell to other hawks, even joked a little, thinking the bird would probably come up with a very dangerous and exciting story, telling of the great battle that had wounded him. Had he told the truth-that he had been captured by the cat-he probably would have been teased for quite a while.

Quite often the registrar gets buried under a mountain of work and loses sight of what is really important and become so physically and emotionally worn out that they can not perform their best work. There is a solution, however, to "clear the decks" and free up mental and physical resources in order to focus on important tasks and remove any barriers to success.

Schedule a half day out of your week and go through your to do list or project file. For each, decide to finish it, turf it to someone else or delete it entirely. If the task is something that you must do, then do it and stop stalling. However, if the task can be done by someone else, turf it off to a member of your cancer registry. Consider this, if a task or project has been on your list for more than a month, it may no longer be worthwhile and could be deleted.

The Cancer Registrar's to do list or project file will never be empty. So, hanging on to unnecessary work or wearing yourself down to the point that you can not serve your healthcare partners or administration is not contributing to your success and leadership as a cancer registrar. By removing negative language from your work and by focusing on a shorter, but much more concise to do list, you will be energized and motivated to do your work well and in a timely manner. Cancer Registrars are accountable for rapidly increasing responsibilities and tasks, and without a plan for clearing the decks you may jeopardize your success as a leader in the cancer registry industry and within your organization.

My Hair Is Shedding And The Strands That Are Falling Out Are Tapered On The Ends – Why?

I get a good deal of questions from folks suffering from hair loss about shed hairs that have tapered ends. Questions about hair with tapered ends are as common as questions about shed hair with white bulbs at the root. People often look at both sides of their shed hair for clues. And many people assume that the tapered ends and the white bulb can be significant in terms of indicating a cause of hair loss or the state of your recovery.

I heard from someone who said: “I know that this is going to sound weird, but I examine many of my shed hairs. And I can’t help but notice that most of them are tapered on the end. Why is that the side away from the bulb comes to a tapered point? What does this mean? Does it mean anything in terms of why my hair is shedding or does it mean that I’m not recovering?”

There are a lot of theories on possible reasons for the tapered ends on shed hairs. One possible reason is that the hairs with the tapered ends are hairs that have not yet been trimmed or cut. So hair that has been cut (and is likely older hair) will not be tapered but will instead be blunt.

In this case, the person writing was saying that most of what she was seeing falling out were hairs that were tapered and this brings about another set of possibilities. She would need to ask herself if it had been a very long time since she had gotten a hair cut or if it was possible that she was experiencing hair loss conditions like chronic telogen effluvium or androgenic alopecia where she was cycling through new regrowth.

You see, when you have chronic teleogen effluvium, your hair can go through a few cycles where it is shedding, trying to regrow, and then shedding again before the trigger that started the hair loss is the first place is removed so that normal hair cycles can begin again. So that is one possibility.

Another possibility is androgenic alopecia. There’s a theory that the sebum that gets built up with this condition impedes the hair as it grows and so those pronounced tapered ends are evidence of that process. Many describe these type of ends as almost having a little round bump on the end. You can literally feel these if you run your hand down the shaft of your shed hair. This looks (and feels) very different from tapered hair that has never been cut or even from the ends of hair that is being affected by telogen effluvium.

It may help to look at the length of these spent hairs. If they are short, it’s likely that they are regrowth that is either cycling through due to shedding or your scalp isn’t able to sustain its regrowth (as is often the case with androgenic alopecia.)

Finally, here’s one final consideration. Some hairs that have been affected by an autoimmune hair loss condition called alopecia areata produce what are called exclamation point hairs. These hairs also have tapered ends, but I have to tell you that this disorder is relatively rare and often, the hair loss is patchy rather than diffuse. So there can be many reasons for tapered ends including: hair that remains uncut; that is at the shedding part of its life cycle: or hair that is shedding prematurely due to different hair loss conditions.

Penis Sensitivity & Diet: They Go Together

Penis sensitivity is something most men simply take for granted. They know that when their penis is touched and stroked (whether by a partner or by themselves), their body experiences the tremendous sensations that make sex so exciting and enjoyable. Clearly, penis sensitivity is crucial for a man’s sex life and he will want to be sure he maintains excellent penis health in order to help maintain a proper level of penis sensation. And it may be that some surprising factors – such as diet – can have an impact in this area.

Perhaps he is engaging in intercourse without appropriate lubrication or he’s furiously masturbating with a grip that is extremely tight. Short term, these activities produce the desired result – a tremendous orgasm – but over time, they may “mute” the degree of sensitivity in the organ. When that happens, there’s a somewhat “deadened” sensation that can interfere with a guy’s sexual enjoyment.


So why should what a guy eats have any effect on how sensitive his penis is? Basically because what we eat has an effect on all parts of our bodies and lives – including the penis. Research has indicated that diets with vitamins B12 and E, as well as folate, help increase sensitivity all over. So if a man has reduced penis sensitivity, he may want to up his intake of these nutrients.

What foods are good for vitamins B12 and E and folate? Lots of dairy products contain B12, as do many kinds of seafood – and liver is especially high in B12. Meanwhile, spinach is a winner for both folate and vitamin E. Folate is also found in many other green vegetables, as well as citrus fruits. Exercise number one is the stretcher. Stick out your tongue as far as it will go and try to touch the bottom of your chin. Then bring it back in. Then, stick it back out and doing the same stretch only try to touch your nose this time. Then bring it back in. Do this around three times a day in sets of twenty or twenty five.

The second is the tongue push ups. Pressing the tip of your tongue to the top of your teeth and folding it back in. Just tense the muscle and release. Tense and release. The next one will be focusing on the reverse, by pressing the tip of your tongue on the bottom of your teeth folding it outward. Pushing it outward and again tighten and relax. Tense and release.

This last one involves getting yourself a lollipop. Or at least something very small that you can clench between your teeth. Once this object is firmly in place just go to town with your tongue. Try to develop that flicker movement that is usually associated with snakes. With practice you can achieve this. But once you do, do not just go straight into that just because you can. My best advice is to start with wide slow strokes. Then slowly work your way into the flicker.

Like any other skill in this world practice makes perfect. Giving your tongue a work-out will increase your endurance for longer, and more improved licking. The truth is it really works. You have nothing to lose so just give it a try.

The Training of the Tongue is really not as ridiculous as it may seem or sound at first. The tongue is, after all, a muscle and with practice it can grow resulting in maximum control. The more practice you give your tongue the better and more flexible it will become. This will make you a much better at giving your loved one oral pleasure. You may even get yourself a title of some sort, like the best mouth of the south. Who knows anything is possible right?

Why My Clutch Is Smoking On My Go Kart

I have written several commentaries on this subject in the past, but I think it warrants rehashing, because there are two possible reasons why your clutch is smoking. I usually discuss one most likely reason, but in this article let’s talk about the two possible causes of why your clutch is smoking on your go kart.

First the fundamental understanding of go karts is needed. The drive line typically consists of a clutch driver and the driven axel sprocket. The driven axel sprocket is mounted directly to the rear driver axel which turns the drive wheels. This is a one step system, or a one ratio system.

The centrifugal clutch which is used on most go karts, uses weights that are mounted internally in the clutch that fling out and press against the clutch bell housing. The bell housing then in turn moves the sprocket driving sprocket teeth.

The typical clutch has 10 to 12 sprocket teeth. As a rule of thumb any clutch that has more than 10 to 12 sprocket teeth is going to give trouble to the drive line. Trouble as in smoking clutch.

The engagement of the weights to clutch bell housing occurs at a certain rpm. Typically this rpm is around 1800 to 2000 rpm. The engine needs to blast through this level of rpm and get the clutch pack to stick and finally engage to the walls of the clutch bell. The smoking aspect occurs when the clutch is engaging but is not fully grabbing. If the prolonged engagement occurs for too long, the clutch will start to smoke and eventually damage it to where the weights will only slip and perhaps even crack and break apart.

As I stated at the start of the article, the prolonged engagement occurs because of two possible reasons:

1.) The engine is not powerful enough to get past the engagement stage

2.) The clutch weight rpm is not high enough.

The engine not being powerful enough typically is the result of a mismatch in ratios to the rear drive wheels. So the real reason is that the ratio is not steep enough, and therefore the engine smokes the clutch.

(Another possible issue can occur and that is if the clutch is made to engage at lower rpm than the engine can grab at, the engine may not have enough power, and the engine will suddenly (more like violently) shudder and stop. It is not uncommon for the engine to be so overpowered that it rotates backwards momentarily.)

The second way the clutch will smoke is if the clutch rpm never reaches engagement speed, or it is in the neighborhood of engagement speed, but is not high enough above the engagement speed to get a lock. This will smoke the clutch and is prevalent in mismatched jackshaft systems.

The remedy for the first clutch smoking problem, is to alter the drive line so that the overall ratio is steeper. The simple method is to increase the rear sprocket diameter. Programs have been written that will estimate if you clutch will smoke or not, they typically are found on web pages or are available for purchase through various web pages. Typically what occurs is that the hp-ratio just will not be possible using the simple one ratio system. So a jack shaft needs to be added to make the ratio even steeper. In other words, making it a two ratio system.

This is where guys who install jackshafts need to be aware. The clutch typically cannot be put on the driver of the jackshaft, with a ratio in front of it. This will make the clutch rotate too slowly, even though the overall ratio is correct. So the clutch engagement rpm needs to be taken into account otherwise the clutch will smoke on the secondary jackshaft mounting position.

The bottom line is if clutch is not engaging because of either too little hp, or too slow of a clutch speed then the system need to be changed by altering the ratios either behind the clutch or in front of the clutch.

How Not To Be A Victim

Beginning with my being a NYPD detective for 20 years, now retired and currently working as a New York state private investigator, I feel that I have the knowledge and experience to share with you some valuable advice for people on how you can and should take some responsibility for keeping yourselves safer. And for those of you who want to learn more about preventing yourselves from being a victim of crime, in this day and age.

As a detective in one of the busiest and largest cities in the world, New York City, I have come across thousands of victims; many were unable to avoid their fate no matter what they did. There was a large group that would have been able to prevent themselves from becoming victims by following these simple rules.

Following is some advice you can use to minimize your risk in becoming a VICTIM of a CRIME. Much of this advice is basic common sense! In this forum I will address some of the issues and how to handle them, along with some examples for you! As I go along, you may realize and tell yourself, “I knew that!” Yes, you may then recognize what makes sense when it is pointed out, however, are you really doing it in your daily life? Are you making a conscious effort in making and keeping yourself aware, paying attention, and listening to your own ‘gut instinct?’ If you don’t, then you need to learn what to do and put it into practice, make it ‘second nature,’ or natural for you to do. The more comfortable and natural it feels for you to do, the more it will aid you in how not to be a victim!

Let me start with, be aware of your surroundings. It takes very little to be observant. While leaving, while on your way and while arriving at your destination i.e. home, office, restaurant, events, etc., take notice of who and what is around you! The main advantage a criminal has on you is the element of surprise!

If you look like a victim there is a greater chance that in fact, you will become a victim. To clarify this, the ‘bad guy’ does his homework on body language. He knows for every person that is aware of their surroundings, there will be several people following that are not paying attention to what and who is around them, and he will target those individuals, which are now the prime candidates to be one of his victims. Who do you think he will go after? Could you be his next victim?

You look like a victim when you are oblivious to your surroundings; i.e. you are always looking down instead of looking forward and around you while walking; if you are too focused on talking on your cell while walking; if you appear lost and overwhelmed; if you are tipsy and/or drunk; and if you appear timid instead of confident in what you are doing, or where you are walking. Remember; do not confuse CONFIDENCE with ARROGANCE! Being arrogant can sometimes get you into more trouble then being timid. Use a glance, do not stare him down! Being or appearing arrogant can bring on a confrontation with the ‘bad guy’ because of egos. If you carry yourself with some confidence, it can reduce your chances and the percentage of being a victim. Even, if someone isn’t really confident they should, at least, portray themselves as confident and be aware of their surroundings, to aid in their own safety, especially when they are walking, and/ or traveling, alone!

I often see many prime victims in the heart of NYC. For example, if you just stand in front of the Waldorf-Astoria at 5 p.m. on any given day you will see 90% if not higher of the women who walk by are looking down at the ground. When I’ve asked people that I know who consider themselves street smart, why they do so, they respond with, “That was to avoid conversation.” So I explain to them, that they can still keep their head up, glance at those around, but that they should just continue to walk at a quick pace and that too will help avoid conversation. I’ve also asked if they could identify anyone that they’ve walked passed or who has passed by them? Usually they reply, “no.” And I often come back with a response such as, “You might have been able to identify their sneakers!” Most of the time they, then, get my point! There is nothing more frustrating to many detectives then a victim saying I didn’t see his face and I can’t I.D. him. In the event of a crime, often, unless someone else comes forward for the most part, the criminal has gotten away with the crime.

For the most part, I tell people not to put yourself in compromising situations, which I know is at times, easier said then done. Although, if you find yourself in a unavoidable situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, or ill at ease, I have some information and advice on better ways to handle the situation, by being prepared and ready to react appropriately!

One example, of an unavoidable situation is that you are in your office building later then usual and you are going to leave and are waiting to take the elevator, when the door of the elevator opens there is an unknown lone male inside. Often a person will go ahead and get on the elevator even when she (he) gets an uneasy feeling. She (he) may think that don’t want to show fear to themselves or others; that they feel silly and embarrassed, or they feel they are ‘just being paranoid’ and ‘overreacting,’ however, those are times when a crime can be and has been committed. However, you are better off to think and to know that you are much better off being ‘safe then sorry!’ The better option really, in a case like this, is to be preventative! To think of your safety first! So you should always be prepared for and be thinking that if, or when, a scene such as this occurs, you act as if you’ve forgotten something, don’t get on the elevator and walk away, letting the elevator go on without you. Wait a bit, and then try again! It will not change your schedule that much, but it is a means to keep you safer, just in case!

More often then not, the man will not be on there the next time the door opens. However, if the same man is on the next time and he appears to be riding the elevator for no apparent reason then, DO NOT get in the elevator and do go back to your office, locking doors and phone security or call 911. You will not be the first person to call Police about a suspicious individual; in fact you could very well be stopping a crime and you being a victim. I responded to many suspicious calls and I can’t ever remember being annoyed at the person who called, if in fact they identified themselves.

Another example of being prepared and looking out for safer options is to park near the elevator or stairs if using a parking garage while at work or the office. If you weren’t able to find a space close to one of these, then I advise you to try to move your vehicle to a better space closer to one or the other, during a break or at lunchtime. However, just by being closer to the elevator or stairs does not mean you should be less aware or less prepared of your surroundings. Still be prepared when you are going to your vehicle. Have your keys out, don’t be fumbling with your pocketbook (purse), look in the windows to check the rear seats and/or back cargo area prior to entering your vehicle.

Some people have been able to get into cars and will re-lock the doors, leaving you unsuspecting. If you have mace, or another personal protection device, have it out and don’t put it away until you have entered the vehicle and are pulling out. In this day and age, many people do carry mace or some other protection with them, however, when you ask them where it is they will tell you it’s in my purse or my pocket. My reply is always the same, “Are you going to ask him for a timeout, so that you can take it out and spray him?” I don’t think he will give you the time!

In addition, you should manually lock your doors. I know that many car doors automatically lock today, so the tendency is to think they will lock on their own. One problem with that thinking is that the doors don’t lock, until the vehicle is moving at 5-15 mph. So lock them even before putting your key in the ignition.

A lonely street is another example or situation that can be problematic, and that you should take into Account while looking out for your own safety. You should have your mace with you, in your hands and ready to use if need be, for one. Also, if you find yourself walking down one and sense someone following or see someone coming towards you, crossing the street can be and is another preventative measure which just adds a few steps to your walking, but may well be what helps you stay safe. One more measure you can use is to enter 911 on your cell phone ready to push send, if need be, as a call for help. Today, many of the newer phones are equipped with a GPS chip, so the call can be located and even the phone can be tracked.

In all of the above scenarios (yes you probably will find yourself in one of them at one time or another) so BE PREPARED TO REACT! Let me explain what I mean as far as reacting. Self defense courses and martial arts are great, and yes, I believe in them very much, however, the drawback is you have to be trained in them. If it’s a passing fancy and you take just a couple of classes, or if you think that several initial classes will make you an expert that isn’t the case. I had a drill instructor who told us, “We taught you just enough martial arts to get you hurt, so don’t go downtown and confront everyone!” Many people are equipped with various protective devices (i.e. MACE, loud alarms, whistles, lighted key chains, pepper spray, etc.) this is your way of preparing to react. Just have them available and ready. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!

Another situation I’ve come across, which could be entitled, “you can’t tell a book by it’s cover,” A lone female just finished shopping and went to the Mall parking lot. When she got to her vehicle she had a flat tire. Just then a Well dressed Middle aged Man in a suit happened by,noticing her Flat and offered to help.Thinking that this was a nice thing and he looked safe. He went to her trunk and took out the spare tire, as he was doing this she noticed he had placed his briefcase in the trunk continuing a friendly conversation he finished and placed the flat tire back into the trunk and closed it. As She was thanking him He looked up and stated;”I must have exited the Mall at the wrong exit would it be possible to drive him to the other side of the mall. Now,this man just did you a favor by changing your tire ans you had a nice conversation. Would YOU drive him. Well she remembered that he had placed his briefcase in the trunk so she became suspicious.As a smart woman she made a claim that she had to go back into the mall to get something for her husband and then she would drive him.
