Teen Obesity – Discover Proven Ways to Combat This Deadly Epidemic!

This is a topic that needs our immediate attention.

I recently watched our fearless first lady on television discussing her new initiative … "The War on Teen Obesity." Her national campaign to address this problem obviously demonstrates a real need for change with our children's daily habits.

We are seeing more and more teens with grown up health issues … diabetes, high blood pressure and hyper tension.

How has this happened?

Why are so many American teenagers gaining weight at such a rapid rate?

Well … I witnessed this problem first hand my first year of coaching in a middle school. I was asked to be one of the basketball coaches and during one of our practices I divided up the players in to two groups … shirts and skins.

These kids should have been in the best shape of their lives but what I witnessed was numerous kids completely out of shape.

Now we can identify the many reasons fro this epidemic … excessive caloric intake, consumption of excess sugar, lack of physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle.

It is sad the farther our students progress in school, the less physical activity they are afforded through the school day. Most school districts require students to complete one credit of physical education to graduate high school. This can be accomplished in a semester … the remaining 3 years years our children continue to live sedentary lives. When I was attending elementary school we had numerous opportunities to play at recess. High school students … not so much!

All of these reasons have contributed to the obesity epidemic we have today.

So now that we know the why to this problem … let's discuss some ways to combat this epidemic.

It goes back to daily habits … not only our children habits but also as role models what are the habits we display to our children each day.

The reality is kids will model behaviors they see … NOT what they hear. So please do not give your kids the one liner … "Do as I say, not as I do"

* Take responsibility for your own actions and model healthy choices for your children.

* Increase Daily Exercise

We must place our children in situations that will benefit their physical fitness. Here's an example … Yesterday my family celebrated my 8 yr old sons "end of the season" basketball party. I was fortunately to have had the opportunity to coach the team so my wife and I decided to celebrate the successful season and gather the boys together before they transitioned to baseball or other spring sports.

We decided to have the party at a dodge ball facility. You talk about FUN !!

We reserved the facility for 2 hours and had food and rewards for the kids … though I must say the highlight of the evening was the actual dodge ball games with the kids.

At one point, all of the kids and the adults were participating in the games. It was a great workout and the kids and adults had a blast!

This was a great activity that included the entire family in a physical activity setting.

We need to plan more activities in our daily and / or weekly schedules that will force our children to become physically involved.

Bottom line … We must change our daily habits.

We must adjust our eating habits … we must change our physical activity habits … and we must continue to model positive habits for our children.

Remember the definition of insanity … "Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."

If we want a different result for our teens physical fitness then it is critical we change as well. We must change the little disciplines in life if we want to see true change with our physical fitness.

Drink more water … eat nutritional meals and snacks … exercise daily … refrain from polluting your body with drugs and alcohol … these will get you on the path towards improved physical fitness and vitality.

Unfortunately our youth will continue to grow to massive sizes if we as adults allow it. Educate your child and continue to practice healthy habits through your life.

Childhood Obesity and Self-Esteem

When observing the typical American youngster’s eating habits, it is difficult to believe the statement that our society is obsessed with being thin. Children and teenagers commonly chow down on French fries at fast-food restaurants, or munch on potato chips, ice cream and cookies while watching TV.

It is no secret that American children are becoming obese. Since 1960, the incidence of childhood obesity has increased by 50% and about one in five American youngsters weigh more than he/she ought to.

While the health risks from obesity are quite well-known, the psychological effects of childhood obesity can be equally as devastating. Overweight youngsters are often teased – by both their peers and adults. They are frequently considered to be less desirable to have as friends. Jokes poking fun at overweight people are common in our society. While growing up, obese children are forced to endure psychological barbs and social discrimination. As a result, they often suffer with low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy, and typically are looked at as the source of their own problem.

Many social situations are potentially embarrassing for the child with excess weight. Appearing in gym classes or public swimming pools where they have to wear more revealing clothing becomes a difficult time. Those who play competitive sports often suffer the humiliation of being the last ones chosen for teams.

Studies have revealed that obese children typically perform more poorly in school than their normal weight peers, and often have lower grade point averages. As they mature into young adults, they have more difficulty gaining acceptance into college and finding jobs and future promotions. It is certainly no wonder that over time these childhood experiences lead to low self-esteem and poor self-confidence. This can be the beginning of an unfortunate cycle of social isolation, emotional withdrawal, depression, inactivity, more overeating, and even further weight gain.

The first step in helping an overweight child, who may be experiencing low self-esteem, is to be able to identify the warning signs. They include:

· The child seems to be sad, lonely, anxious, or angry

· The child has very few friends

· The child seems to be obsessed with eating or with food

· Normal sleep patterns are disrupted

· A general lack of interest in activities the child usually enjoys

· Reluctance to participate in social activities, or even to go to school

· Worsening school grades and increased absenteeism

As parents, we should responsibly protect our children from the physical and psychological harm caused by being overweight. This begins by establishing healthy eating and exercise patterns.

Niacin For Psoriasis

Vitamin B3 (niacin or nicotinic acid) is also touted as a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. If only that were true! Unfortunately, this B vitamin is toxic in high doses and may harm rather than help psoriatics. This has been the sad experience of those taking 100 milligrams or more daily.

“Troublesome side effects often occur, most commonly the ‘niacin flush’ – intense reddening and itching of the face and upper body that usually diminishes after several weeks. High dose niacin can also cause gastrointestinal upsets, abnormal liver function tests, elevated blood-sugar levels, and, rarely, atrial fibrillation (rapid beating of the heart),” revealed Dr. Stephen Barrett, a psychiatrist, consumer advocate, and board member of the National Council Against Health Fraud (NCAHF) in “Health Schemes, Scams and Frauds.”

“The flush is not considered dangerous but the sort of doses that produce it (greater than 100 milligrams) can, in a few individuals, produce other unwanted side effects, including nausea, headache, cramps and diarrhea. Still larger doses of nicotinic acid (in excess of two grams daily) have been reported to produce skin discoloration and dryness, decreased glucose tolerance, high uric-acid levels, and aggravation of peptic ulcers and even symptoms that resemble some of those that accompany hepatitis,” according to Dr. Sheldon Saul Hendler in “The Doctors’ Vitamin arid Mineral Encyclopedia.”

Regular exposure to sunlight has helped patients with psoriasis. Since vitamin D is made in our skin when we are exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, quacks claim that oral doses of the same vitamin will benefit psoriatics.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. Oral doses of vitamin D are not recommended. Excess amounts are dangerous and can cause headache, fatigue, muscle weakness, blurred vision and kidney stones among others.

“High doses of vitamin D can be toxic. The major effects of vitamin D toxicity are hypercalcemia (high levels of blood calcium] and soft tissue calcification. Symptoms of hypercalcemia include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, tiredness, drowsiness and, when more severe – confusion, high blood pressure, kidney failure and coma,” Hendler said.

“The margin of safety between the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin D and the level which is toxic in some people is very small; the smallest for any vitamin. Some people develop toxic symptoms three to four times the RDA. Thus the practice of supplementation with this vitamin should be discouraged,” concluded Dr. Myron Winick, director of the Institute of Human Nutrition, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in “The Columbia Encyclopedia of Nutrition.” (Next: Are fish oils effective for psoriasis?)

Diabetes Type 1

Diabetes has several types. One of them is called Type 1 diabetes or Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM). It is also sometimes called as Juvenile onset diabetes. Insulin treatment is always required in this type of diabetes. It can happen at any age but most frequently in children, adolescents or in early adulthood.

Diabetes Type 1 is a form of diabetes that happens as soon as the blood sugar level tends to elevate. The blood stops producing insulin which in turn causes the blood sugar to rise. This type of diabetes destroys the beta cells of the pancreas that produces insulin, resulting to increased blood sugar and urine glucose.

The classic symptoms of diabetes type 1 include polyuria or frequent urination, polydipsia or increased thirst, polyphagia or increased hunger, and weight loss.

People suffering from this type are treated using insulin, without it the patient will most probably not survive. There is no real cure for this disease so treatment must be continued indefinitely. Insulin is commonly administered through injection, but devices such as insulin pumps and inhaled insulin are also available. However, the treatment can be burdensome for it requires awareness, training, proper care, and discipline.

Although the exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown, it is believed to be immunological in origin. Evidence show that diet plays a big part in the development of this disease. Genetics is also considered to be a huge factor. Diabetes, in general, can be hereditary. So if most of your relatives have contracted this disease, the greater the risk for you to acquire it as well.

The environment can also strongly influence the development of this type. Like in the case of identical twins, when one twin acquired type 1 diabetes, the other only had 30-50% of type 1 at that time. Despite possessing the same genome, one twin had the disease while the other didn’t. This only shows that aside from the genetic factors, ecological factors could also affect the appearance of the disease.

If not treated properly, type 1 diabetes could lead to certain complications. Low blood sugar levels could result to seizures or periods of unconsciousness. Some even fall into coma called diabetic ketoacidosis caused by hypoglycemia. While high blood sugar levels could lead to increased fatigue and long-term damage to certain organs such as eyes and joints.

Glucose monitors have been developed and sold in the market. These monitors alert diabetics when they have dangerously high or low blood sugar levels. But there are some technical limitations to these devices so they are not commonly used.

Never Kiss A Parrot

Beware pets that can become health pests!

Because if you give him an unwanted peck, he might give you Psittacosis. Whazzat? That's another way of spelling 'fatal attraction' … And while you're about it, you might as well watch out for (Ouch!) Pussy's claws, (Scratch, scratch!) Leaping fleas, and (Eeeagh!) Hairy -scary caterpillars …

If you are suddenly besieged by high fever, chills and a splitting headache, you'll probably think you have malaria. Or even pneumonia. So may your doctor. Then he might embark upon a whole lot of anti-malaria drugs – even those for resistant malaria. You will not get better, so he'll switch over to strong antibiotics. Again, no go. Then you'll both beat your foreheads in frustration. But, finally, if your physicist is perceptive enough, he'll ask you if you've got a bird. You'll answer in the affirmative. Suddenly, his face will light up with a 'Eureka' expression. He'll have just realized you're suffering from Psittacosis.

Come again, you say, Psittacosis. It's a disease that is passed on to man by birds. When parrots and parakeets are the culprits, sorry, carries, Ornithosis, is the word used. Other birds that carry this disease are pigeons and poultry (although it's quite rare to get the disease from hens). Apart from the symptoms already mentioned, you could get a harsh, dry, intermittent cough and occasionally bring up a little sputum and even blood. There is generalized bodyache and the back and neck muscles could become stiff and painful, so the condition could even be mistaken by doctors for meningitis. Some patients feel tired, listless and depressed and complain of insomnia as well. With such a wide range of possible symptoms it's easy to see how doctors can be misled. Especially when you consider that there could be even further complications of this illness – including pleurisy with effusion or water in the lungs, inflammation of the heart muscles or myocarditis membran or pericarditis. The malady could even prove fatal. Actually kissing parrots, not washing your hands after handling birds (and their feeding dishes) before you sit down to lunch, and staying in extremely close proximate to them could make you a victim of psittacosis a week or two after contact, that's how long the incubation period is. Occidentally, however, you could just get a mild 'flu-like indisposition which might pass off by itself.

But why take chances? The disease can be diagnosed by getting an x-ray done; this shows a pneumonia-like picture. There is also protein in the urine. But the confirmatory test is a blood culture which reveals the causative bacteria. Otherwise, the overall picture of the disease can be confusing, since Psittacosis could have been mistaken for Tuberculosis and Infectious mononucleosis as well as the other conditions listed above. Tetracycline is the best drug for this disease.

Chances are you've heard of an ailment called cat Scratch disease, but is there really such a thing? Yes, there is, rare though it may be. All you need is a cat, sharp claws, some provocation and – OUCH! She's raked her nails into you! What happens next? A tiny, pimple-like swapping may appear at the site of the scratch, approximately three to ten days later. Two weeks after this, the lymph glands in the neck (or armpits or groin) become swollen and painful. Very often, this is all that happens. But in some patients there may also be high fever, headache, nausea and exhaustion. Only five per cent develop a body rash that resembles measles.

A skin test confirms the diagnosis. A biopsy of the swollen gland may also be done as additional confirmation.

This ailment can not be transmitted from one person to another, so there's no need to isolate the sufferer. Usually, no treatment is needed, apart from giving medicines for the fever. The outlet is excellent. The swollen glands disappear spontaneously in two to six months. The consequent immunity to this disease lasts a lifetime. On the whole, this is a very rare disease, so you need not throw out your poor feline.

One can get a skin irritation from the fleas of dogs, cats and rats. Several people show no response to a flea bite, but in those who are sensitive, the flea's saliva causes a tiny, raised, reddish swelling. There is intense itching, so they scratch the affected area again and again, introducing infection into the skin, which ulcerates or developments pustules. This condition is known as Flea Dermatitis. One can control the fleas by keeping the house and all pets scrupulously clean (oneself too!), Regularly delousing one's pets and their beds with powders or by using flea collars. The dermatitis is treated with soothing creams and anti-allergy pills.

Caterpillars do seem to appear in the most unexpected places – like the chair in which you're just about to sit, or on your sweater hanging out on the clothesline! Before you can say 'hairy horror', one has brushed against you. And left its stinging bristles deeply embedded in your skin. You feel a terrifying burning pain in the area. Redness and urticaria (hives) develop. And the more you scratch, the deer you push the hairs in. some engaging victims employ dough, which is rolled in a to-and-fro motion over the area. Let me tell you an even better method, a sure-fire one – using sticking plaster. Just fix a strip of it to the skin where the hairs are embedded, press, lift off one end and pull sharply – presto, all the bristles come out and the itching soon subsides.

If left alone, the infection usually subsides in 24 hours, but in some people a certain allergy develops which may have to be treated with IV Calcium Gluconate. In less serious cases, anti-allergy pills and soothing creams help after the hairs have been pulled out.

Effects of Separation Anxiety on Your Dog

Are you one of the many dog owners that consider your pet as one of the family? Do you celebrate his birthday as you would your children's? Do you ask yourself why your dog does not appreciate this & tears the floor while you are out? If this sounds familiar I am sure will find some answers in the following article.

When a dog has a behavioral problem it is important to remember that dogs do not think like us humans. Dogs are social animals that need exercise, mental stimulation & company to prevent boredom & loneliness. If you do not provide this it is possible that symptoms of separation anxiety will occur.

Here are some of the signs

  • A dog suffering separation anxiety, boredom, or loneliness will often whine or whimper when they feel you may be getting ready to leave.
  • It is not uncommon for a dog to shake or pace around when they sense your imminent departure.
  • Some cases show dogs that have taken to chewing their paws, (similar to humans chewing their nails) in attempts to stop the anxiety.
  • A dog's chewing often extends to objects
  • Your pet may even scratch & dig at windows with the intent of trying to get to you.
  • Continual howling or barking is another symptom that will often cause problems with neighbors.
  • A dog that gets so excited he almost looses his mind & is jumping around frantically when you walk through the door is very likely to be showing signs of separation anxiety. Of course we want to have our dog come & greet us, that's all part of the joy of owning a dog & the companionship it brings, but this should be with a calm nudge & wag of the tail not bouncing off the walls.

All of these symptoms are very sad to see or hear about & it is important to address the issues with compassion & patience while trying to find a cure. Under no circumstances should any form of punishment be used. At the root of the problem it is usually that the dog feels abandoned & they are unsure if or when you are going to return. Dog's do not have any concept of time & needs to learn that you will be coming back soon and are not abandoning him forever.

It is a fact of life that dog owners have to come & go & the pet can not always go too. I do not believe however that a dog should be left alone for more than 3 or 4 hours, if you find that you need to do this on a regular basis then maybe you could look at getting a pet sitter. It's important that your dog gets used to accepting some time alone, the sooner they accept this the better is for them & the family.

Three Simple Tips To Remember When Choosing A Good Acupuncture Clinic

The art of acupuncture origin in the East, specifically China. It's a very old practice, steeped in tradition and observed for centuries. During the second half of the twenty century, the practice spread to Western Europe. These days, it had been incorporated into modern medical practice. It involves the insertion of very thin needles through the patient's skin at specific points on the body. These needles are inserted to various depths. There have been a number of proven benefits of acupuncture, but the most notable one is its therapeutic benefits. It can alleviate pain, even that caused by chemotherapy.

Acupuncture also involves several sessions if you're interested in under it. Before the procedure will be administrated, you will have to be assessed by a specialist. The patient will also be told what to expect and instructed on self-care after each session. A regular session lasts for about thirty minutes or a little longer. However, take note that this will not cure serious illnesses or the like. Here, this should not be viewed as a remedy, but a treatment. Moreover, it will yield benefits only when performed properly. Thus, you must choose your acupuncturist or acupuncture clinic with care.

So how do you choose a good acupuncturist or clinic? There are a few essential details you need to keep in mind. First, you have to be well-acquainted with this treatment. That way, you will know what exactly it is for and what to expect from it. This will also form the basis of your assessment when you check out different specialists. Be on the lookout for those who had the necessary education and training in a Masters program for Chinese medicine. While the specialist does not need to be a Chinese, he must have the required certification and training. Note that other professionals in the medical field are also allowed to practice this to some extent.

Second, utilize your online resources to know more about a particular clinic or specialist. If the clinic is a reputable one, it will definitely have a website. It may even have accounts in social networking sites. Keep an eye out for client reviews and testimonials. These can help you gauge the kind of services the clinic or specialist actually delivers. Lastly, schedule a consultation. Once you have determined which one, two, or three clinics you are interested in, set an appointment with them. That way, you can meet the professionals personally. You will then be able to make your final selection.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Various Glutathione Supplements

Deciding on a product for supplementing glutathione greatly depends on the reason why you want to supplement glutathione. Are your needs long term or short term? How important is cost? Are you interested in better athletic performance, general wellness, or support for a treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation? Ideally, the type of glutathione supplementation you choose should be safe, affordable and there should be clinical evidence that it actually is effective at increasing cellular glutathione levels in humans. Glutathione does its work inside the cells of the body, so a supplement should increase glutathione at the cellular level.

Many products can be eliminated from consideration because clinical evidence indicates that they do not work. Glutathione in capsule or tablet form is very common. However, many professionals feel that oral administration of glutathione is ineffective, commonly citing the studies done at the University of Bern and Emory University. One study demonstrated that rats are able to absorb oral glutathione. This goes to show that animal studies alone are not necessarily a reliable guide.

When glutathione is taken orally, very little reaches the bloodstream. There are other products that are probably more effective at delivering glutathione to the bloodstream. There are nasal, sublingual (under the tongue), dermal (patches), and even intravenous administrations. One oral product encloses reduced glutathione in microscopic packages called liposomes. There is not a great deal of clinical evidence that any of these methods increase cellular levels of glutathione. Even if that were the case, the long term use of a direct delivery method might pose problems. The body already has a complex system for managing glutathione involving production, recycling and a two stage negative feedback loop for regulating cellular glutathione levels. Forcing glutathione into the body is likely to disrupt the balance of this system.

Availability of the amino acid cysteine can limit the body’s production of glutathione. Therefore, the two most popular ways of making cysteine available for glutathione production are N-acetyl cysteine (also called NAC) and whey protein concentrate. Other compounds that are known to increase levels of glutathione include S-adenosylmethionine, alpha lipoic acid and silymarin or milk thistle. There are products that use combinations of these compounds. They generally include a cysteine donor such as NAC or whey protein in conjunction with the other compounds so as to provide support for all phases of glutathione metabolism.

The long term use of glutathione supplementation for purposes of general wellness or healthy aging deserves more study. At this time, results of any large scale studies of long term supplementation in a human populations have not been published. Some studies suggest that the use of N-acetyl cysteine for this purpose might be a problem since part of the NAC is converted to S-nitroso-N-acetylcysteine, abbreviated SNOAC. This compound might cause arterial problems such as pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Whey protein, on the other hand, is nothing more than milk protein. Fresh, raw milk is treated with citric acid (acid whey) or rennet (sweet whey). This causes the casein protein to curdle leaving the whey protein dissolved in the clear liquid that is left over. This clear liquid is called whey. The whey is filtered and dehydrated to a dry powdered concentrate. That is basically how whey powder products are produced. It is sterile and reputable companies generally have a scrupulous quality control process that insures a safe, pure, and consistent product. In addition to supplementing glutathione, whey protein is known to increase muscle mass. This may help offset sarcopenia, one of the conditions that contribute to Frailty Syndrome that is common to older persons.

There is a lot of variation of protein composition of whey powders. This affects glutathione supplementation output. A comparison of various protein powders can be found at http://www.rimkor7.com/best_protein.php.

It pays for the legal expenses involved and for the expenditure for the victim going to the court claiming damages, within your liability limits. In a case of an accident, the costs of repairing your car are covered by the collision insurance. The comprehensive insurance covers damages caused by incidents other than car accidents, such as natural calamities, theft, fire, vandalism, and hitting an animal.

In a case of the insured person and the co-passenger needing medical treatment for bodily injury due to an accident, this is covered by the Medical Payments coverage. Personal Injury Protection will cover the medical expenses and the wages lost by you and the co-passenger if injured in the accident.

Why You Need Auto Insurance

The primary objective of any insurance is to protect the policyholder and his family against the consequences resulting from an unexpected injuries or death and financial burdens in the event of these disasters. It is a contract between the related insurance company and you, where you agree to pay the premium for the losses that the insurance company will need to cover in the event of accidents.

The auto insurance covers these three main areas:

Property coverage – refers to the damage or the theft of your car

Liability coverage – relates to your legal responsibilities to others whom might in the cause of the property damage loss be incapacitated

Medical coverage – refers to the medical treatments, therapy charges, rehabilitation, lost in the ability to work, or even funeral expenses where there are faculties.

The Work Of Auto Insurance

The auto insurance also protects you from uninsured drivers or motorists. In this case, the uninsured motorists or drivers have no insurance company to pay you for the damage which had happened, but luckily you still have your insurance company to bear the losses.

Protect the bank which had provided the car loan to finance your vehicle. Because if there are any disaster happening to your vehicle, no one will be able to lend or provide any additional money to you to fix the car other than the auto insurance company. Otherwise, you will need to repair the damage made to the car by your own, and this would prevent you from paying for the periodic monthly loan payment on time. The consequences are that the bank will not lend you any more money in the future, with the bad credit standing which you are in at least for some considerable amount of time.

Patient’s Guide to Stem Cell Treatment

Stem Cells have two unique characteristics that make it suitable for therapy or treatment for a growing number of diseases and conditions. Firstly, they have the ability to renew or create more cells of the same kind. Secondly, they can mature into specialised cells suitable to carry out a specific function, such as in the skin, muscle or bone.

Presently, apart from curing a number of health conditions such as heart diseases, neurodegenerative ailments, and diabetes, with every passing year, more diseases and conditions are being identified to be treated by using these cells. Clinical trials are in progress to treat blindness, stroke and spinal cord injury with the use of these cells. This may lead to a medical revolution in future.

For nearly 60 years, bone-marrow transplant has been the most common form of Stem Cell therapy, though this can be a prolonged, painful and expensive process. In contrast, blood stem cells derived from the umbilical cord are safer and less expensive to use for treatment.

Blood Cells have been proven to be of tremendous potential in treating diseases of the blood and immune system, as is evident from the thousands of cases where children have been successfully cured of leukaemia. The potential to regenerate tissue has led to treatments of diseases and injuries to the bone, skin and surface of the eye by grafting or implanting tissues.

Stem Cells unlike drugs do not dissolve in the body. Since they are living cells, they may grow and often react in unpredictable ways for the time they may remain in patients’ bodies. Therefore, these type of treatment has to be specific to each patient’s needs. It is important to understand that different stem cells come from different parts of the body and are meant for different treatments.

As a patient considering to undergo Stem Cell treatment, one must be curious and never shy away from being assured of scientific evidence that clearly demonstrates safety and effectiveness of a treatment. The patient must also in cases where a decision has been made in favour of stem cell treatment probe whether cells to be used for treatment are mixed or pure. Patients own stem cells may come from bone-marrow or fat, umbilical cord blood, foetal tissue or embryos. The risks and potential complications must also be clearly explained by the medical practitioner administering the treatment to the patient.

As much as one would like to believe that these cells are the miracle cure for most diseases and injuries, it certainly is not a cure-all and various clinical trials are at an experimental stage without established results and data to prove the safety and effectiveness of a treatment.

Benefit From the Latest Digital X-Ray Scanners

The use of x-ray imaging as a diagnostic tool in medicine dates back to 1895, following Wilhelm Röntgen's discovery that x-rays could have been used to create images of internal bone structures. Within days of the German physicist's discovery, the technique was being adopted by doctors to help diagnose patient's medical complaints faster and more accurately than ever before.

Today there are understood to be over 5 billion diagnostic medical tests performed every year, of which two thirds involve the use x-rays demonstrating the huge medical significance of the discovery and its continued importance in medicine to this day.

Advances in Radiology

There have been numerous advances in technology since Rontgen's discovery, although it was not until the 1960's that the first digital x-ray images were first produced. Digital imaging equipment and the accompanying computer software and hardware to store and view images were developed in the 1970's and 1980's, and today, these modern x-ray services are being offered in hospitals and major medical clinics the world over.

Benefits of Digital X-Ray Imaging

There are numerous advantages to a digital x-ray over photographic film method of recording an image. From a patient's perspective the benefits are fundamental. The latest equipment allows images to be produced in less time and it can be transmitted immediately to a referring doctor. This greatly speeds up the time taken to diagnose injuries and illnesses.

However, the largest benefit to the patient is the dose of radiation received. Photographic film requires exposure to higher intensity pulses of x-rays in order to create sufficient contrast in the image and uses far lower doses of radiation, while producing images of superior quality with greater diagnostic value.

Digital images are affected less by under and over exposure and radiographs can check the image instantly while a patient is still present. Should shadows be present on the images, further x-rays can be taken reducing the inconvenience caused to the patient.

Radiographers can also subject a digital image to a number of image enhancing techniques to improve image clarity, which results in better quality images with greater diagnostic value. There is also a substantial cost advantage, as the images do not require costly photographic film and chemicals to develop the image.

Digital X-Ray

Many clinics and hospitals across the country now offer digital x-ray services to patients. However, the cost of new scanners can be prohibitively expensive for some smaller clinicians and access to the latest low-dose digital x-ray scanners may not be possible without making a trip to a major city.

Quite a few private radiology clinics are now offering state of the art equipment to residents in the suburbs, with companies such as Insight Radiology now offering digital X-ray. Residents no longer need to travel long distances to have the safest imaging tests performed and can benefit from scans taken on state of the art equipment using a fraction of the dose of x-rays used to develop photographic images.

Internal Medicine and the Doctors Who Practice It

Internal medicine is a field in the medical profession in which the professionals diagnose and treat patients who may have adult diseases which they have studied and trained in. This field is rather broad which is why there are some sub-specialties for those who are educated and trained here. They are basically considered as primary care physicians but they can not be labeled as pediatricians and general practitioners. A good part of their education and training, which is about seven years, is dedicated to learning about prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect adults.

Common Diseases

The common diseases that internists treat are quiet numerous. Their practice covers a broad aspect of the field and these diseases often fall under cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, pulmonology and many more. There are about 13 subspecialties that fall under this field and there are some that have more patients than others. Cardiologists initially study internal medicine for about seven years as the foundation of their subspecialty. There is an additional three to five years in order to focus on the education and training or the cardiologic field. Included in this field are the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease that concerns the heart, the blood vessels and the circulation of the blood around the body. Heart diseases, difficulty in breathing and chest pains are usually brought to the attention of the cardiologist.

Endocrinologists have the same foundation as all other activists; about seven years of education and training in medical school. An additional two to three years is necessary to subspecialize in this field. Those who practice here focus on the function and circulation of the human body's hormones. The endocrine system covers a large area of the human body including but not limited to tissues and all other glands common and specific to both the male and female bodies. Internal medicine practitioners who specialize in endocrinology cover most parts of the human body since these parts function with the use of hormones. Gastroenterology covers the digestive system of the human body.

There are a few major parts of this system, including but not limited to the oral cavity, the stomach and the colon. The practitioners of this subspecialty can not perform any form of surgery on the patient, especially those related to their field except they have studied surgery separately. Infectious disease is another broad field in which internists can practice with the addition of a few years into their education and training. Their education and training focus on infections that are caused by fungi, bacteria and other sources. They mainly prescribe and are knowledgeable in antibiotics which may be specific to the kinds of infections that plague the human race.

Pulmonology includes, but is not limited to the lungs and the other aspects of the respiratory system, which may include the heart. The internal medicine specialists of this field help to prevent, diagnose and treat most of the diseases found here. Pneumonia, asthma and other respiratory diseases and conditions are covered here.
