Laptop Or Desktop Confusion? Top Consumer Advice Revealed

Are you confused and frustrated not knowing which one to buy? A cheap desktop PC or a great value laptop? Well let me offer you my thoughts about the differences between a laptop and a desktop PC.

My aim is to make it easier for you to make the right choice and buy a PC to be proud of.

There are many different factors that should be considered with regards to your purchase.

Let’s have a closer look at this:

Portability – It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that buying a laptop will give you greater mobility. The laptop is very portable. Perhaps a better question to ask you is…where do you plan on using this computer? Are you going to be home based or would you need to take it away from the home. Would it be an advantage to be able to take it away from the home? Personally I always choose a laptop. Why? Because it gives me greater flexibility in the working environment and it is nice to work in the garden in the summer! So for portability the laptop is preferable.

Perhaps you are not fussed where you’re computer will be located. If that’s the case and your happy sitting at the same desk in the same room, the desktop computer is the choice for you.

Hardware Capability – There used to be a huge difference in the hardware capabilities between a desktop and a laptop PC. A few years ago if you wanted a powerful PC you never considered a laptop. These days technology gets more powerful and smaller so there really isn’t much difference. The only difference is the size of the hard disk. To me this doesn’t really sell a desktop PC as laptops normally have more than enough disk space to cater for my needs.

Desktop PC’s are great for heavy processing activities. If you are passionate about your music, video, photography or games then you might want to take advantage of the desktop PC’s larger storage capacity.

The other great thing about desktops is that you have plenty of scope to upgrade the components.

You could add an external storage unit to a laptop but it compromises its portability.

Processing capabilities – If you are a die hard gamer then a desktop is the only real answer. Many games put a tremendous burden on the processing capabilities of a PC. With a desktop you can always upgrade your graphics card, something you can’t do with a laptop.

So if you can’t live without your games and you want to be able to play them effortlessly for the next couple of years then I suggest a desktop PC with a support hot graphics card installed. As companies aim to take software to its limits they place more demands in having the hardware to support it. Technology gets smaller and even more powerful.

Cost – Laptop PC’s usually cost more than the equivalent spec desktop PC. Laptops do come with other external peripherals such as built in monitor mouse and keyboard.

OK let summarize:

Laptops are great for portability and for traveling about. So if portability is important you really have no choice but to go with a laptop.

If you don’t mind working on your PC in one place then ask yourself if you’re likely to play games. If gaming is something you are likely to do then a desktop PC is the choice for you.

What is the Best Acne Treatment For You?

Searching for the best acne treatment? If you're among the hapless individuals seeking to calm your acne flare-ups, prepare to be done in a whirl. Not all acne therapies deliver the desired results. The more severe and stubborn the acne, the longer it will take to make them heal, and the more pronounced the marks they may leave behind. Treating acne is oftentimes a trial-and-error process.

Along with a topical treatment, a teenage patient may be advised to use only gentle facial products like soap designed for sensitive or acne-pronone skin, and to eat healthy foods (organic, if possible). Good nutrition counts as the best acne treatment. Strive to eat two to four servings of fruits and three to five servings of vegetables daily. Regular intake of antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E and drinking at least eight glasses of water every single day are likewise beneficial to skin health.

On the other hand, among the best acne treatment options that have produced effective results for many people are medications like Accutane (strong enough to treat severe acne) and Retin-A. There are also other preventive care options, like oral supplements, but skin care experts are becoming more cautious in prescribing these particularly for youngsters. They're more suited for adults. On the other end of the spectrum are the natural acne remedies. People's choices vary in what they've considered as the best acne treatment, but natural solutions are among the top contenders.

Apart from nurturing the skin from the inside by eating a variety of whole, natural foods, lean protein, and fresh fruits and vegetables, natural skin care products may help keep acne and other blemishes at bay. Paraben-free skin care formulated with herbal extracts that naturally soothe, calm, and nourish troubled skin may be the best acne treatment for some people. Facials using essential oils and fruity acids can purify the skin, prevent bacteria from penetrating it, and leave a clear complexion. Stressed out or sensitive, acne-prone skin that's red or blotchy may benefit from a facial utilizing sea elements like green algae. Some women may consider facials using plant-based phytoestrogens that improve skin elasticity and add moisture as the best acne treatment. Products containing Resveratrol (which is concentrated in red wine but only appears in minute amounts in grapes, but may also come in supplement form) are also highly touted to combat acne.

For those with mild acne, like teenagers going through a phase, gentle cleansing, exfoliation, and moisturizing using dermatologist-recommended natural products that produce good results may be considered as the best acne treatment. Eating well, of course, is vital. A study shows that males aged 15 to 25 who were given high-protein low glycemic index foods exhibited reduced reduction of acne compared to those who were fed a regular teen diet consisting of sugary beverages, white bread, and potatoes. Stress needs to be effectively managed, too. Even with a topnotch skin care product or the best acne treatment at hand, not managing your stress levels may be what's causing your skin breakouts. In addition, skin must be protected from the ultraviolet rays of the sun through use of a sunblock with adequate sun protection factor.

Why Does Chocolate Make Me Horny?

Ever noticed that chocolate is sold in the women’s clothing section in department stores? Ever wonder why? It’s because women crave chocolate. And that’s a good thing!

Doctors have done many studies on the connection between chocolate and an increased sex drive in females. These studies reveal that women who eat some chocolate each day have a higher sex drive than women who do not. It was also found that not only do females have stronger sex drives due to a daily intake of chocolate but they had improved sexual function. Chocolate also helps balance out mood swings right during menstruation.

The reason that chocolate improves sexual function and increases sex drive is due to chocolate’s properties. Containing serotonin, which is a chemical that calms the mind and is produced by the brain, chocolate is like taking a mild sedative. Caffeine is found in chocolate in very small amounts and caffeine helps to raise serotonin. The chemical serotonin is often associated with the same effects as marijuana. Yet in reality, about 25 pounds of chocolate would have to be consumed to get the same effect as being high on marijuana. Plus the sweet, creamy taste of chocolate is more soothing and sexual on the tongue and taste buds. Why not having her lick melted chocolate off your body or seeing what happens with a can of chocolate whipped cream?

So if you’re thinking of giving your girl a gift or treat, give her some chocolate. Not just for this upcoming Valentine’s Day but every day. Just a small amount each day will be happier and healthier for you both.

Vitamins That Help You Lose Weight

Did you know that the human body requires 13 vitamins in order to properly function?

Did you know that all 13 essential vitamins are found in whole foods?

According to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans “nutrients should be met primarily through consuming foods. Foods provide an array of nutrients and other compounds that may have beneficial effects on health. Dietary supplements, while recommended in some cases, cannot replace a healthful diet.” In laymen’s terms this means that by increasing your intake of healthy food rich with nutrients, you are guaranteed to lose weight and increase your metabolism.

B Vitamins

Of all of the 13 essential vitamins, B vitamins are most commonly linked to weight loss. To better understand this relationship lets discuss the B family itself. It contains a total of eight vitamins B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), niacin, B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, B12 (cobalamine), biotin and pantothenic. B vitamins serve in a number of different capacities and perform a host of functions including creating new blood cells, boosting energy, and regulating metabolism.

With respect to metabolism, B vitamins are especially important so much that many weight loss clinics will offer weight loss patients shots of B12 to help them progress through their weight loss period. For the best results, B vitamins should be consumed collectively. Developing a diet that contains B vitamins rich foods like dairy products, egg yolks, meat, fish, leafy vegetables, and legumes will certainly improve your chances of boosting your metabolism.

Vitamin C

Paired with vitamin E, vitamin C helps in the antioxidant process and can help avoid harmful oxidation of cells. Vitamin C is also serves as a facilitator of absorption of supplementary vitamins and minerals including calcium, iron, and folcacin. Vitamin C has also been connected as a correlate to healthy hormones, bones, blood vessels, collagen and teeth. Aside from the nutritional benefits, Vitamin C is also essential to improving your immune system which is absolutely necessary for weight loss. For best results, consider incorporating the following vitamin C enriched foods into your diet dark green vegetables and broccoli, red and green peppers, citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits, and tomatoes.

Vitamin D

Through recent research, Vitamin D has been cited as a contributing factor to greater weight loss success. Be clear that Vitamin D is not the answer to all of your weight loss problems but it can change and improve some things. In particular, for persons with inadequate levels of Vitamin D who are on a weight loss program, supplementing with the vitamin can help to create balance and augment one’s weight loss success. This of course would take place in accordance with other routine weight loss techniques like exercising and eating healthy foods.

Just as Vitamin C, Vitamin D also helps with the absorption of calcium which is critical in preventing osteoporosis and maintaining solid bone density. In the most natural of sources, Vitamin D can be created through 10 to 20 minutes of direct sunlight a few (three times) a week. If it is the winter season or if you’re not a big fan of the sun, you can also get a decent amount from foods like cereal, bread, milk, yogurt, fish liver oils, catfish, tuna, herring, and salmon.

Vitamin E

Similar to B vitamins and Vitamin C, Vitamin E has also been identified as a strong antioxidant and contributing factor in establishing an efficient metabolism rate. In addition, Vitamin E also boosts your immune system and has been connected to preventing heart disease and in some cases cancer. Healthy skin is another benefit of Vitamin E. Vitamin E will help encourage skin elasticity which for someone looking to trim inches is a good thing. Your best option for the greatest results is to identify Vitamin E found in unsaturated fats including leafy/green vegetable like lettuce or broccoli, vegetable oil, whole grains, avocado, wheat germ oil, seeds, and nuts.

Prevention and Treatment of Periodontal Disease

Despite the common belief that if we brush our teeth they can last a lifetime, there are some diseases that can affect even the most cautious cleaners. Unlike tooth decay that is primarily caused due to poor dental hygiene, gum diseases such as periodontal disease can happen to people with perfect health, albeit less frequently. Since the disease is caused due to a build-up of bacteria-filled plaque in between the gums and teeth, there is a different procedure for both preventive measures and the treatment of the diseased gum line than traditional dental care, which primarily focuses on preventing tooth decay.

Like any ailment, prevention is more effective than even the best form of treatment for periodontal disease, which with the proper knowledge can only take out about 5 minutes of your day on cleaning your teeth. While it may seem obvious, one of the easiest ways to prevent the spread of bacteria that can cause or worsen periodontal disease is to regularly brush the lower parts of the teeth that connect to the gums. Along with proper brushing with a fluoride paste, you should floss around the roots of teeth to prevent the plaque buildup that can loosen the gums and cause further complications.

It is important to be aware of the fact that some conditions that can make a predisposed individual more susceptible to developing periodontal disease. Family history of the disease can greatly increase your predisposition to being affected by it and it is a good idea to alert your dentist if it runs in your family. People who partake in tobacco use in the form of cigarettes or chew also greatly increase their odds of getting infections in their gums.

Periodontal disease is usually treatable when caught early by a dentist with knowledge of the symptoms. Bleeding or receding gums and loose feeling teeth, accompanied by a lingering bad taste, may be warning signs that you are developing periodontal disease and it is urgent that you seek treatment. If you are concerned that you may have the beginning symptoms of the disease, call your local dentist and schedule an appointment so they can begin taking steps to hinder the development and prevent further infections. Untreated periodontal disease has even been linked to developing heart disease.

The standard procedure for treating periodontal disease often involves a thorough cleaning of the area of the gums that connects to the roots of the teeth, followed up with smoothing the roots to prevent further infections. However, for more severe cases that result in tooth loss, implants and crowns may be necessary to protect the remaining teeth from further damage. If you have already been diagnosed with periodontal disease or believe you have the symptoms, your dentist will give you an individualized treatment plan. Closely following this treatment plan can make a significant difference in your health.

Asthma Part 2: The Medical Consult

In this part of the series, we will discuss on the diagnostic methods available.

Asthma is diagnosed in the primary care setting by a comprehensive medical history, family history, a physical examination and lung function tests.

Your primary care physician will determine the severity of your asthma which in turn will affect the treatment you require.

Referral to a Respiratory Specialist in the following situations:

  • Subspecialized tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis of asthma
  • There is a history of a life threatening asthma attack
  • Treatment for specific allergies
  • Polypharmacy (Multiple medicines) is needed to control your asthma

Important Points To Mention During Your Medical Consult

Important points to bring up during your medical consult include:

  • A Family history of asthma and allergies
  • Frequency of asthmatic attacks
  • Timing of asthmatic attacks, especially if it occurs only during certain times of the year, day, or in certain places.
  • Triggers of asthma specific to you
  • Related conditions when experiencing an asthmatic attack, like a concurrent upper respiratory tract infection, reflux disease, stress, sleep apnoea etc

Physical Examination

Physical examination would include:

  • Auscultation by your primary physician to listen for wheezing in the lungs
  • Examination of the upper airways, sinuses and upper nasal passages for existing upper airway diseases
  • Examination for other signs of allergic conditions eg eczema

Diagnostic Tests For Asthma

Lung Function Tests

Lung Spirometry is a type of Lung Function Test that measures the amount of air you inhale and exhale and the speed there.

Some respiratory specialists will use medicines to "treat" existing asthma and repeat the lung function tests again to see if there is any improvement. This is usually done if chronic asthma is suspected. It is also done when the diagnosis of asthma is unclear.

Associated Tests For Asthma

Other tests performed by respiratory specialists may include:

  • Allergy testing
  • Perform Bronchoprovocation tests to "trigger" a controlled asthmatic attack.
  • Chest X-Rays
  • Electrocardiograms (ECGs).

Asthma In Young Children

Many children develop asthmatic symptoms before 5 years of age and it is difficult to diagnoseose asthma in young children because the symptoms often present together with many other childhood diseases.

Reason is because children have small airways to begin with. Any respiratory condition with mucus production, for example, will further narrow their airways causing wheezing to be audible, thereby mimicking asthma. As the child grows older, the airways enlarge, and wheezing no longer becomes audible.

However, asthma should be suspected if:

  • One or both parents have asthma
  • Other allergic conditions eg eczema is present
  • A history of pollen allergy or hay fever is present
  • Wheezing is audible even when the child is healthy

In the following article, we will look at the challenges facing special population groups such as young children, pregnant women and elderly etc.

Cream Depilatories – Should You Use Them?

Cream depilatories are easily obtainable at the local pharmacy or supermarket. They are cheap and anyone can use them in the privacy of their own home for maximum convenience. However, there are some precautions you need to keep in mind. This article first looks what cream depilatories are exactly. Then we'll explore where they can be used, how they should be used, and finally a few caveats.

So to our first point ….

What Are Cream Depilatories?

A depilatory cream contains strong chemicals which dissolve the hair just below the skin's surface. One main ingredient in many depilatories is calcium thioglycolate which breaks down the keratin so the dissolving hair can be wiped off.

Where Can Cream Depilatories Be Used?

As the preparation contains strong chemicals it is unwisely to use them on domestic areas. There are some depilatory creams specifically designed for sensitive and facial areas but be aware they may cause skin irritation.

Generally this method of hair removal is good for arms and legs!

How Are They Used?

It is best to try a test patch first to make sure you do not get a skin irritation. Then apply the cream liberally. Do not rub it in, just allow it to do its work on the hair and pay particular attention to the timing. The instructions should say how long to leave the cream on. This perhaps is the most important tip for using depilatories – to repeat, make sure you do not go over the recommended time!

Precautions

Cream depilatories are not for everyone. Yes, they can clear unwanted hair quickly over large areas such as the legs and arms. However, if an individual has coarse hair they may find the depilatory does not work quite as well.

Also some find the smell objectionable and they can be a little messy to clear up.

Some recommend not using depilatories more than once or twice a month as it can take off layers of skin. Also it is a good practice to stay out of the sun for a while after using them.

So to round up …

If you want to get a general idea of how these products work for people a good idea is to visit amazon's web site and just type in the names of some brands such as Veet, or Nair. There you will find customer reviews from the bad to the good.

With a product such as this, it is unlicely you will find a large number of overwhelmingly good reviews as everyone is different and the product will work differently on each person. So mixed results are to be expected.

There is probably no better way to find out if this hair removal method is good for you than by trying it yourself on an area of skin not so visible. As cream depilatories are quite inexpensive there is not much to lose!

Antioxidant Products

This effectively minimizes rancidity, retards lipid oxidation, without any damage to the sensory or nutritional properties, resulting in maintaining quality and shelf-life of meat products. However, intrinsic factors are available in live muscle to prevent lipid oxidation. These factors are often lost after slaughtering during conversion of muscle to meat, primary / secondary processing, handling, or storage of meat products, necessitating further supplementation with extrinsic antioxidants.

For this reason, synthetic antioxidants, such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), were extensely used to delay, retard, or prevent the lipid oxidation by scavenging chain-carrying peroxyl radicals or suppressing the formation of free radicals. However, because of the concern over the safety of these syntactic compounds, extensive work is being transported out to find novel and naturally occurring compounds to delay the oxidative degradation of lipids, improve quality, and maintain the nutritional value of foods. Thus, natural antioxidants have greater application potential in the meat industry because of the consumers' acceptability over the synthetic antioxidants. However, the application of plant extracts, herbs, spices, and essential oils with antioxidant effects is still distant for the major reasons of limited data about their effects in different meat products.

The meat industry is claiming antioxidants from natural sources to replace synthetic antioxidants because of the negative health consequences or beliefs concerning some synthetic antioxidants. Fruits, vegetables, by-products, and other plant materials provide good alternatives. Some of these antioxidants, apart from oxidation inhibition, may also affect other quality attributes positively or negatively, and ultimately affect consumer acceptability of the product. It has been shown that treatment with some natural sources can cause changes in the color of meat or meat products. Spices have shown to affect the flavor profile of treated meat and poultry products. Depending on the product, these flavors may be viewed as negatively or as positively by sensory panels. Some ingredients negatively affect the technological properties of meat and meat products, such as texture and emulsion properties. The safe edible use of these natural sources also depends on their health-related issues because some of these may also contain anti-nutritional or even toxicological factors. Thus, while establishing a new source of natural antioxidant for use in the meat and meat product at small, medium, or commercial level, following should be considered:

· The in vitro antioxidant activity should be based on various different analytical techniques. The activity should also be confirmed in targeted products during various processing conditions; thus, the effects of cooking, pressure, product ingredients, and so on, on antioxidant potential should be confirmed.

· The active ingredients / molecules of crude, concentrated or / and raw material should also be identified, and efficient conditions for extraction / separation of that particular molecule possessing potent antioxidant activity should be studied.

· Apart from oxidation inhibition, other product attributes should also be considered. Thus, the overall cumulative effect of identified antioxidants should be evaluated in different products before reaching to a conclusion. For example, if one source is a very potent antioxidant, it can also affect the color and sensory properties negatively and lower the acceptability of the final product; then a proper conclusion should be drawn to establish these negative implications. Some natural antioxidants are also sensitive to light, temperature, and pH which results in reduction of antioxidant potential. Thus, future studies should also be directed towards exploring the storage and processing environment effects on the antioxidative potential of natural antioxidants.

· Economics is the other main factor on which sustainability of any industry depends. Thus, economic extraction conditions should be well addressed relative to yield, time, infrastructure requirements, treatment materials, as well as the availability of natural sources. The correlation between economics of antioxidant use and economics of oxidation spoilage should also be considered before making any conclusion for the meat industry.

· Mere conclusions based on in vitro, in vivo, or in producto antioxidant activity is not suitable when new unconventional antioxidant sources are discovered. Thus, nutritional and toxicological studies (in vitro / in vivo) must be done to ascertain the safe use of these natural sources. This is the most important point because the meat industry is rejecting synthetic antioxidants on the basis of negative health-related issues; Thus, while accepting new natural antioxidants, these must be analyzed for the same health-related consequences.

The Cancer You May Have

Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma Economic Impact is very obvious in patients who lose their jobs due to this dreadful disease. Man hour lost to sick leaves and cost of health insurance to employers are also economic wastes. All these impact negatively on both the patient and society.

Lymphoma can appear in different forms with symptoms that appear like those of other ailments. This is why the need to use various types of techniques for lymphoma diagnosis arises. Which is why only the doctor who specializes in medical diagnosis should handle its identification.

A critical look at the lymphoid lesions will be carried out to identify the presence of possible cancer cells by investigating the structural practices, along with the genetic constitution and what the organ looks like as a consequence of the interaction of its genotype and the environment.

If lymphoma manifests in an aids patient it means that the disease has already gain ground. If this happens treatment could be through oral drugs or by way of injections aimed to attack the disease via your bloodstream. It is called Systemic chemotherapy.

But unfortunately, most lymphoma patients either were not properly diagnosed or under-treated. A recent shocker was the discovery from haphazardly chosen medical establishments nationwide that 50 percent of patients with curable lymphoma are being given under-treatment with chemotherapy leading to poor response and recovery. This happens at a time when even Cell marker tests can reveal the presence of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

This test can be used to identify Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma subtypes. It can also detect whether the lymphoma is caused by abnormal activity of B-cells or T-cells. If you suspect that you have lymphoma or any of your family have once suffered lymphoma, get tested regularly to ensure that you do not have the disease.

Treating And Preventing Breast Cancer

The medication tamoxifin is administrated in a pill form. This medication interferes with the activity of the hormone estrogen in the body. This is a drug that has been used for over 20 years to treat patients with advanced breast cancer. Also, it is used as an additional therapy following primary treatment of early stage breast cancer.

When taken by women at high risk of developing breast cancer, tamoxifen reduces the chances of developing the disease. There are on going studies being conducted for the use in the prevention of breast cancer. Also, there are studies using it in the treatment of several other types of cancer. It can also be used to treat breast cancer in men.

How does it work?

Some have referred to tamoxifen as an anti-estrogen. The reason for this is because of how it works against the effects of estrogen on the body cells. Estrogen is a naturally occurring group of steroid compounds in the body, which sometimes promotes the growth of breast cancer cells. When used as a complementary treatment following cancer surgery, it asserts in the prevention of the breast cancer returning. It also has shown to help prevent new cancer developing in the other breast.

What are the other beneficial effects?

Even though it acts against the effects of estrogen in breast tissue, it will act like estrogen in other tissues. What this means is that those who take the drug may derive many of the beneficial effects of menopausal estrogen replacement therapy. These are lower blood cholesterol and lower bone loss (osteoporosis).

Does it prevent breast cancer?

Research has shown that when it is used as adjuvant therapy in the case of early stage breast cancer, it not only reduces the risk of recurrence of the original cancer, but it also reduces the risk of developing new cancers in the other breast. So it appears that it does help prevent breast cancer. Using these findings as a base, a research study has been funded to determine the usefulness of tamoxifen in preventing breast cancer in women. These are women who have an increased risk of developing the disease. This in depth study, known as the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPT), was conducted by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP). This is a component of the NCI's Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program. The conclusion of the study was that there was a 49 percent reduction in diagnoses of invasive breast cancer among women who took tamoxifen. These same women also had 50 percent few diagnoses of non-invasive breast tumors, such as ductal or lobular carcinoma in situ. Even with these great results, there are risks associated with tamoxifen. Some of them are even life threatening. The decision to take or not take tamoxifen is still an individual one: The woman and her personal doctor, as with any other medication or treatment, must carefully consider the benefits and risks of therapy.

The use of tamoxifen is not new. It has been around for a few years, but it still a good option in the treatment of breast cancer. Combining this treatment with newer treatments has decreased the number of deaths due to breast cancer, and hopefully one day there will no more breast cancer.
