Overcoming Irritability: 10 Tips

Irritability rears its ugly head when we are feeling disappointed, hurt, angry, let down, or confused. When the new year starts, we make all kinds of plans to improve, get organized, lose weight, build our business and a part of us thinks we will have the stamina and motivation to make real progress. Somewhere around the middle of January, reality sets in and we realize how hard it is to make changes. Then, we can get downright grumpy. Can you refer to this at all? I know I can.

As a therapist, I've learned a few tricks over the years about how to overcome irritability and reclaim a positive outlook. I'll share 10 tips to overcome irritability in this article, both to remind myself and to give you some (possibly new) information to try out.

1. Tell yourself, "Even though I'm feeling _________________ (negative emotion here), I forgive myself and know that this feeling will pass. I will re-focus my attention to just one change I'd like to make and re-think my approach. "

2. Make sure you are getting plenty of Vitamin D – if you can not get it through sunshine (January is notoriously gloomy in some climates) – talk to your doctor or nutritionist about supplementing with Vitamin D3. There is a wealth of research that shows many more people are deficient in Vitamin D (the happy vitamin) than we would suppose.

3. Stop what you are doing and list 10 things you are grateful for – out loud. Get creative – pick things that you really have to notice and think about. Example: "I'm grateful for warm showers, deep breathing, the way the sunlight glints through the crystal hanging from my rear-view mirror, the sound of my cat purring, the jokes my nine-year old told me this morning, etc ".

4. Swap negative thoughts for more truthful thoughts. When we get irritable or down, chances are our thoughts are telling us something negative and not entirely truthful. Analyze the thoughts going through your head, and notice if there are cognitive distortions (all or nothing thinking, fortune-telling, catastrophizing, etc.) – then re-frame the thought without the distortion.

5. Breathe very deeply through the nose (important) 4 or 5 times. Breathing deeply through the nose brings cooling oxygen to the limbic system of the brain which calms the neural activity in this emotional center of the brain. As you inhale, imagine a beautiful color of blue coming in and spreading through your whole body and mind and as you exhale, imagine your body and mind is letting go of all stress and tension.

6. Pet your pet. Petting your cat or dog (or hamster or mouse?) Has been shown to lower blood pressure, soothe nerves, and bringing a sense of contentment.

7. Have you been somewhat isolated? Pick up the phone or go out and talk to someone. We need conversation, human touch, and eye-to-eye contact with people to remain healthy.

8. Smile. It sounds so simple and yet it is substantial. The nerve endings in your face talk to your brain and when you smile, your brain thinks "oh, we must be happy" and then your brain seeks to make this reality.

9. Pray. Meditation, mindfulness, and prayer are all ways to connect your spirit with God's Spirit. Prayer changes things (prayer changes us).

10. Dance. Wherever you are, you can find a spot (go into the bathroom and close the door if you must) to dance around. The activity gets blood pumping and the silliness of dancing a jig in the middle of the day can make you giggle. Giggling is the perfect antidote to irritability

Mole Skin Tag Removal at Your Own Home

Are you annoyed and embarrassed about your moles, skin tags and warts? If you have no time or money to spare for clinical treatment, you can perform home treatment to remove these ugly objects from your skin. There are safe do-it-yourself mole removal tricks which can yield satisfactory results at a reasonable time frame.

The first thing to do is to identify if your mole are normal or benign growths from the skin. A benign mole has even shapes, edges and coloration while a malignant mole has rough edges and spreading coloration. Hold the head of the tag and cut at the lower part of the stem from the skin. You can use small scissors but it is more convenient to use a nail clipper. However, you must sterilize the scissor or clipper before cutting. Also prepare some cotton balls and alcohol.

Another mole removal technique is to cut off the blood supply to the skin growth. For tags, you can tightly tie a string or dental floss around the stem. You may need assistance from someone else to tie the string. Usually, the skin tag will dry and die after 1 to 2 days. Contrary to popular belief, this method is safe and it poses very little chances of infection.

Mole and skin tag removal can also be done by “suffocating” or dehydrating the skin growth. You must prepare a thick mixture of castor oil and soda. The paste must be applied on the skin tag about 2-3 times a day. The skin tag or mole will eventually dry out, die and fall off. This may take a while but it is the least invasive home procedure.

Fall Down, Go Boom? Are Ankle Sprains a Rite of Spring?

Days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer. Spring has sprung in many parts of the country. Say goodbye to old man winter and start thinking spring sports. The soccer, baseball and lacrosse leagues are having their first games; the high-school track team is geared up for competition, and The Leukemia Society's Team-in-Training groups are just starting to increase their mileage aiming for an early summer marathon finish. Spring is in the air, and our old friend the ankle sprain is starting to show up more frequently in the office. Basketball and volleyball seasons are always the main producer of this injury; but you would probably be surprised how many ankle sprains occur in outdoor sports like soccer, baseball, lacrosse and of course track and field. Ankle sprains have been reported to be approximately 20% of all sports injuries with more than 25,000 occurring every day in the United States.

Uneven, wet fields coupled with early season fatigue and competitive full-contact intensity equal injuries. The ankle is the joint that compensates for uneven surfaces. Failure to compensate for uneven footing causes many sprains, which account for 85% of ankle injuries. Jumping, cutting, and pivoting put the ankle at risk. Inadequate rehabilitation of an injury places many athletes at further risk by decreasing their inherent adaptive ability to uneven surfaces or sudden changes in direction. The use of narrow cleats with minimal arch support or the use of running shoes for a court sport can also place an athlete at risk for ankle sprains.

Ankle sprains occur in runners mainly because they are chatting away as they are on a long run and are simply not paying attention. How often do you see a runner fall just because they fall of the curve or in a hole while running? Lots … Pay attention to where you are going and you can prevent this type of injury. If you know you are a klutz, run on an even surface, like a track, when you are tired or distracted.

If you have an ankle sprain, you should be evaluated by a sports medicine podiatric foot and ankle surgeon if you have localized pain, swelling and bruising, as well as accessibility to walk more than 5-7 steps comfortably. Many a foot fracture has been missed in the emergency room when x-rays were taken only of the ankle and not the foot. The foot should also be evaluated due to the number of undiagnosed fifth metatarsal fractures that occurs with many ankle sprains. Surgery is only recommended in Grade 3 severe injuries in athletes or in those patients who have had multiple ankle sprains and suffer from chronic ankle instability. Long-term ankle instability can often be avoided with an aggressive physical therapy program. Bracing should only be used in the short-term during rehabilitation because long-term bracing actually causes atrophy and reduced ROM.

Physical therapy is needed for all ankle sprains. The goals of physical therapy should be to regain full ROM, strength and proprioception (where your brain thinks your ankle is in space). Regaining strength in the peroneal tendons as well as overall balance training are the keys to successful rehabilitation of an ankle sprain. A maintenance program of ankle strengthening, stretching, and proprioceptive exercises helps to reduce the risk of future ankle sprains, particularly in individuals with a history of multiple ankle sprains or of chronic instability.

Bottom line: if you happen to fall down and go "Boom", have your ankle sprain evaluated by a podiatric foot and ankle surgeon. Delaying treatment and rehabilitation can lead to life-long instability.

Are you the kind of person who can bump a corner of the coffee table and know that you'll have a whopper of a bruise tomorrow? Are you afraid of your neighbor's dog jumping on you because you'll have marks to show for it? Do you frequently sport some big bruises and do not know where they came from? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, then you're an easy bruiser.

Bruising at the drop of a hat is the result of fragile blood vessels, and can come from a number of underlying causes. In Chinese medicine, easy bruising is a sign that your body's holding function is weak.

Your Chinese Spleen is responsible for digesting the food you eat and converting it into energy, blood, and nutrients. A secondary function of your Spleen is to hold things in place, including holding blood in the vessels. Other signs that your body is not holding things well are chronic diarrhea, frequent miscarriages, heavy menstrual periods and prolapsed (falling) organs, like your uterus or bladder. From a Chinese perspective, strengthening your Spleen can be accomplished through acupuncture, herbal formulas, and dietary modifications.

From a more Western perspective, easy bruising may be due to a vitamin or mineral deficiency. The most common deficiencies involved in weak or fragile blood vessels are Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and copper.

One of the functions of Vitamin C is to help build collagen, which is important in holding body structures together, including connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments. If you are deficient in Vitamin C, the ability of collagen to hold the connective tissue around your blood vessels may be impaired, allowing them to rupture and bruise more easily. Good food sources of Vitamin C include most dark vegetables such as broccoli, kale, collard or turnip greens, and red or green peppers.

Another nutrient that plays a role in the synthesis of collagen is the copper. Copper is a trace mineral found in oysters, most nuts and legumes (peas and beans). A deficiency in copper can also be an underlying cause of easy bruising.

Vitamin K can also be a player if you're a bruiser, however it's role is different than that of copper or vitamin C. Vitamin K is important in making clotting factors, which are components necessary to stop bleeding and facilitating clotting. Like Vitamin C, Vitamin K is found in dark leafy vegetables. One word of caution, however, Vitamin K can alter the effects of Coumadin or Warfarin, so if you're taking either of those anti-clotting medications, steer clear of supplementing Vitamin K or taking any herbal formulas.

Many over the counter pain relievers, such as Ibuprofen (Advil), Naproxen (Alleve), and aspirin (but not Tylenol), can also have an affect on bleeding. These medications make your platelets (necessary in clotting, too) less sticky and therefore less prone to clotting. This is a good thing if you are at risk for cardiovascular disease or stroke, but taking these pain relievers for a period of time can make you more likely to bruise.

Toxicity problems:

Unfortunately most folks have no idea about how much toxicity has accumulated in their tissues. With all of the air, water and food pollution, we gradually build up toxic metals and chemicals in our bodies. Can Polyps Be Cancerous?

You probably already know that lung cancer is the number one cancer killer. But do you know what type of cancer is number two? It's colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer causes more than 650,000 deaths worldwide every year. You may find this hard to believe, but colon cancer actually starts from very tiny and humble beginnings. Small masses of cells called polyps begin to grow in your colon. By themselves, they represent no real danger. But over a period of five to 10 years, it's possible for these polyps to become cancerous. So you can begin to see why colon health is so important.

Cancer is the result when the normal growth and division of cells in your body gets out of control. When you think about it, the cells are really quite miraculous. Your entire body is made up of cells, and they tend to grow, divide and generally take care of themselves without any conscious input from you. But sometimes things go awry. Instead of growing new cells as and when needed, cancerous growth continues when there is no need for new cells.

In your colon, this extra growth may initially take the form of small polyps. The mere existence of polyps in your colon does not mean that you have colon cancer. But there is a very good chance that over a period of years, one or more of these polyps could become cancerous. Because there are no symptoms at the beginning, the only way to detect polyps is with a test called a colonoscopy.

Colonoscopy uses a tiny camera on a flexible fiber-optic cable. After some sedation and some lubrication, the camera is inserted into your rectum and threaded up through your lower intestine. The colonoscopy operator and the doctor were able to view the inside of your intestine in real time and search for any abnormalities. The process sounds both embarrassing and painful, but colonoscopy is absolutely essential to maintain good colon health, especially if you are at risk for colorectal cancer. Age is the greatest risk factor. About 90% of all cases of colorectal cancer occur in people over the age of 50.

During the colonoscopy, if your doctor discovers any polyps in your colon, he may take a small sample to determine if they are cancerous. In some cases, your doctor may remove the entire polyp during the colonoscopy. There's no cause for immediate alarm even if your doctor does discover polyps in your colon. There are actually several different kinds of polyps and not all of them are at risk for becoming cancerous. Adenomas are the polyps with the greatest risk for becoming cancerous and are often removed as soon as they are found. Once again, if you have a colonoscopy and your doctor discovers the presence of polyps, stay calm. Polyps in the colon, even adenomas, are actually quite common and are routinially found and removed in colonoscopies.

Can a regular colon detox prevent the formation of precancerous polyps? Although no definitive link is being established by clinical research, regular colon cleansing could help you avoid development of polyps. One of the risk factors for colorectal cancer is incomplete emptying of your colon.
