Effective Ways To Avoid Ankle Sprains

A sprain is a torn or stretched ligament. Ligaments connect the bones at a joint and help to keep the bones from altering out of actual place.

Most common injury is ankle sprain. This may happen suddenly when you twist the ankle too far, when you fall, or when you force the bone joint from out of its position. Most of the ankle sprains will happen during the sports activities or running or when walking on an uneven field. Usually such sprains result from the poor proprioception, ligament laxity ,adequate rehabilitation from previous injury, and muscle weakness.

This is a very common injury in teens who are athletes and also in non-athletes. It happens when ankle support ligament get overly torn or stretched. Ankle sprain can happen when you slip walking, put down the weight on your feet awkwardly, or when you step in the hole.

Most of the sprained ankles are very minor injuries, which can be healed with proper treatment, but others can be very serious.

Good balance, strength and flexibility can be helpful in preventing the ankle sprains from occurring. If you lack of these characteristics, doctor may suggest you to wear an ankle or tape the ankle when you are performing exercise.

The best way to prevent ankle sprains is keeping the ankle flexible and leg muscles as strong. Your doctor, PE teacher, or coach can give some home exercises in order to build the strength of muscles and flexibility of the joint.

Here are some tips to avoid ankle sprains:

• Always do warm up exercises and then use the advised stretching techniques for the ankle before exercising, playing sports, or doing any kind of physical activity.

• Using ankle braces, high topped shoes, or tape may be helpful for the patients who are prone to the ankle sprains.

• Observe your step while running or walking on cracked or uneven surfaces.

• Do not overdo the things. If you are fatigued or tiered, this can make an ankle sprain more likely. Stop, or slow down what you are doing, or try to take additional care to observe your step whenever you are tired.

• In the past if you've had ankle sprain, make sure that completely it is cured before you are trying any physical activity.

• Purchase good shoes, which can fit to your feet properly, and maintain them securely fastened or tied when you are going to wear them. One of the biggest causes of sprained ankles in women is wearing the high heeled shoes. So try to reduce the heel of the shoe.

• Include prehab exercises into your daily regimen. They would help in strengthening the stabilizing muscles and also improve the coordination, so that your muscles would have a quick activation that is required to protect the ankle.

6 Reasons to See a Physical Therapist

Physiotherapy helps people who have medical conditions, illnesses or injuries that limit their ability to move and function normally. A personalized physical therapy program can help individuals return to their previous level of activity and improve activities and lifestyle changes that can help prevent and improve health and well-being.

Moreover, in most cases, physiotherapy is a necessary requirement for recovery to be complete, efficient and the effects to be maintained over time. However, it is also interesting to highlight the preventive work of physiotherapy. That is why I propose these six reasons to attend physiotherapy sessions for optimum health.

Injury treatments:

It is assumed that with the use of preventive physiotherapy, injuries should not occur. However, when this preparation is not performed, is performed inefficiently, or other factors that escape the hands of the physiotherapist, they inevitably occur. Whether due to permanent pain, sprains or other major injuries, without proper treatment, they can force the athlete to abandon his practice, so the time comes for this science to re-enter.

Immediately after the medical diagnosis, the first thing that must be started is the treatment, for which a multidisciplinary team must be formed. Immediately after the medical diagnosis, the first thing that must be started is the treatment, for which a multidisciplinary team must be formed, where indisputably must be a doctor and a physiotherapist.

The therapeutic alternatives are quite varied, should be selected the most appropriate to the type of pathology, and that allows recovery can occur as quickly as possible. It is advisable to keep the athlete at rest to ensure their total improvement.

Specific training:

With the help of a physiotherapist (better if you are specialized in sports injuries), you will be able to carry out specific exercises to strengthen those areas more given to injuries, according to the activity that is practiced. For example, specific training of proprioceptive type of ankles and knees, for soccer players, skiers, jumpers and all those who practice intense exercise with the risk of injury in these areas.

Preventive measures:

Depending on the exercise or activity that is practiced, the physiotherapist may recommend, for example, ankle care bandages in football players or martial artists, finger bandages for climbers, guidelines for applying cold or heat when there is a slight injury and other types of measures that can help reduce the risk of injury and maintain a good level of performance.

Passive techniques:

The best of physiotherapies are the active techniques, that is, those in which the subject participates by performing an exercise to improve his health. However, passive techniques are also very useful. For example, mobility exercises, stretching, or massage to relax the tension of the twins or the lumbar region, or other regions, depending on the exercise performed. If these techniques are performed before the pain is a limiting problem (we are talking about a mainly muscular or articular pain) they can guarantee a decrease in the risk of suffering an injury that requires a longer treatment.

Referral to other professionals:

As health professionals, physiotherapists are able to address a number of problems or to prevent them. But it is also very useful his ability to refer to other professionals, according to the needs of the person. Whether to other health professionals or to personal trainers or sports centers, so that the advice of the person in terms of exercise and health is as complete as possible.

Health tips:

It is an interesting work that sometimes is not used because of the need of both the patient and the professional that the physiotherapist has to get their hands on or give message to perform the treatment. But health information is also a very important work of physiotherapists. Sometimes you may find it unreasonable to go to a physical therapist to ask if you are doing something wrong that increases the risk of injury, whether that physical activity is appropriate for your particular case, physiotherapy can do well to relieve your ailments.

This information is very valuable, and it is ideal that you can give in person healthy subjects, before suffering an injury that requires a long and complicated treatment.

In short, we want to emphasize that, as in other health professions, prevention is more advantageous than cure. We can see the comparison with dentists since it is more practical, easy and also economical to go to the dentist regularly before there is a pain that will not let us or eat. Preventive measures will help to make the damage much smaller. With physical therapy it is the same: it is no longer necessary to receive information, counseling, treatment, and training before suffering an injury that leaves us a time in the dry-dock, and that perhaps we could have avoided (or reduced its scope) by applying the measures.

Interesting Facts About Peptic Ulcers

The peptic ulcer damages the lining of either the stomach or the duodenum. The symptoms of indigestion caused by peptic ulcers may harm a person by a severe pain. They can be treated with medicines, but without treatment serious complications may appear. There are two kinds of peptic ulcers: one is gastric and the other one is duodenal ulcer. The diameter of peptic ulcers is between 1-2cm,which seems with a mouth ulcers.

One to ten people at some point in their lives are affected by the duodenal ulcers, especially younger men.Stomach ulcers are more common. The peptic ulcer may be acute or chronic. One of acute ulcers may heal without any long term consequences. On the other hand chronic ulcers are deeper and they causes symptoms leaving a scar even they heal. The stomach contains acid which helps to protect the body from infection. The stomach and duodenum has its lining covered in mucus which protects it from acid. When the stomach produces excess acid an ulcer may appear.

There are some factors which leads to the apearance of the peptic ulcer like: infection with bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori; certain medicines like aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen and diclofenac;smoking and alcohol. In many cases the majority of people have abdominal pain, below the chest bone, but there are also people without symptoms. In the case of gastric ulcer a sharp pain may occur soon after eating, and the pain caused by the duodenal ulcer is relieved by eating or by drinking milk. Other unpleasant symptoms of the peptic ulcer are belching, general discomfort in the stomach, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, loss of weight.

Nowadays there are many tests that deals with the detection if there is any infection with H. pylori, needed in the diagnosis of the gastric or duodenal ulcers or even for stomach cancer.Through several methods we may see if a person has or has not peptic ulcer. One of these methods can be realized by breath or by blood test to observe the presence of H. pylori. Another method is the one with a given substance to swallow called barium, which appears white on X-rays.The X-rays may show the presence of an ulcer. The gastroscopy is another method which uses a tube called endoscop with a fibre-optic cable; the last one being passed through the mouth and into the stomach.

If any person accuse such kind of pains should immediately consult a doctor.

Nystatin and Diflucan – The Myth Exposed

There exists the myth that Nystatin and Diflucan are very powerful antifungal treatments. This myth exists due to the fact that they are the most prescribed and revered antifungal. It also exists because the drug companies and your Doctor may say it's so.

However the herbal kingdom also contains antifungal substances. In fact there are dozens and dozens of different antifungal compounds that exist in nature in the forms of herbs.

The purpose of this article will be to reveal the myths, the pros and cons of both the herbal antifungal and the prescribed drugs such as Nystatin and Diflucan.

Nystatin and Diflucan are given to patients who suffer from chronic fungal or yeast growth. The fungal yeast growth could be anywhere in the body, the intestines, genitals, mouth etc. The assumption is that the medicine will kill the fungus, it will go away and all will be well. This is about as ignorant as the person who invites Osama Bin Laden or Charles Manson to his home for dinner and expects to have a nice quiet evening at home.

Limitations of Nystatin and Diflucan

Nystatin is specifically known for causing drug resistance in different strains of Candida Albicans. It has done this for several reasons. One is that it has been so widely prescribed. Millions of individuals prescribed this drug equals billions of colonies of Candida have had a chance to mutate against it. Beyond this however, it is typical for Nystatin to be prescribed for periods of time that exceeded 30 days. My content is that drug resistance in Candida colonies begin after the colony has been exposed to the same medication for 21 days continuously. Nystatin can be prescribed for 30,60 or 90 days at a time.

Diflucan is rarely prescribed for that long because it is simply too toxic and may cause liver and kidney damage. However is it not as toxic as Nizerol which could cause a disaster if prescribed that long.

Nystatin is active mostly in the intestinal tract and is poorly absorbed systemically. This is an advantage of Diflucan or Nizerol in that they are absorbed systemically and are not limited to the intestinal tract.

The definition of Dysbiosis is an imbalance in the intestinal tract of normal intestinal flora. Lactobacillus Acidophilus which inhabits the 20-30 foot long small intestine and Bifido Bacterium which inhabits the 6-8 foot long colon are the most abunant protective bacteria in the digestive tract. They help produce vitamins, help us digest and absorb nutrients from our foods and also protect us from harmful bacteria, parasites and yeast which find their way into our digestive tract. When medication such antibiotics, steroids, antacids, and immune suppressing drugs are taking these friendly protective organisms die-off. This condition is called "Dysbiosis". "Dysbiosis" is a state of imbalance where the harmful micro-organisms achieve an abnormal dominance over the good organisms. This allows a build up of toxins produced by the organizations and also disruptions normal digestion. Due to this, stomach acid and enzymes produced by the pancreas that digest foods (particularly proteins) lessen. This leads to incomplete digestion of proteins.

It is impossible for someone to have an overgrowth of Fungus or Yeast without also developing Dysbiosis. This is because once the flora that protects us from Fungus or Yeast in compromised the growth of harmful bacteria and parasites coincides with the Fungus or Yeast. Does Nystatin or Diflucan kill harmful bacteria or parasites? The answer is no!

So if you use these drugs to eliminate your Candida problem and if you are lucky enough that they do indeed eliminate it, you are still left with the harmful bacteria and the parasites the make up the reminder of your Dysbiosis. That being the case the harmful bacteria and the parasites prevent your friendly bacteria from growing back despite the hundreds of dollars you are spending on acidophilus and probiotics. So what happens in time? Well of course, the Candida grows back again? Why? Because you treated Candida only and not the complete problem which is the Dysbiosis!

Why Use Herbs?

1. Antifungal herbs are plentiful do you can rotate 3,4 or 5 different ones taking each one for 4, 7 or 10 days at a time and then moving to another one without ever causing tuberculosis resistance to occur.

2. Herbs are much less toxic then the prescription antifungal drugs.

3. All the antifungal herbs are to a greater or lesser degree also effective against harmful bacteria and parasites. So when you use the herbs you're treating the Dysbiosis and not just the Candida. This gives you a better chance of eliminating your Dysbiosis so that the acidophilus will grow back!

The "cons" regarding using herbs are very few. Allergic reactions may occur in very sensitive individuals to some of the plant substances in the herbs. That as there there are none.

So while in fact there is the myth of Nystatin and Diflucan being so powerful, you now may see that they are nothing more then big bullies who can not ever do the job correctly so like all bullies their own short comings lead to their temporary failure .

Colon Cleansing Questions and Answers – What Are Polyps and What Prevents Them

Colon polyps are lumps of tissue that develop in the lining of the colon. Sometimes, they're harmless, and other times, they're cancerous. In either case they must be removed, because the presence of them increases the risk of developing colon cancer. Not all polyps will turn into cancer, but it is better to remove them all than to take a chance on it and allowing it to worsen.

Many people wonder what prevents polyps. Studies have shown that calcium prevents polyps. Those with appropriate calcium levels have a lesser risk of developing polyps, and those who had colon polyps saw a decrease in the number of polyps when they increased their calcium intake.

Vitamin D is another part of what prevents colon polyps. This makes milk a wonderful resource for colon polyp prevention because vitamin D is added to milk to assist with calcium absorption. Because Vitamin D is also found in sunlight one of the best things you can do each day is eat a bowl of fiber rich cereal and when it is sunny outside, go on a walk for about 10 minutes afterwards, wearing sun screen of course.

Colon cancer is the second most deadly cancer on record, so taking the necessary precautions in order prevent polyps is very important. Other vitamins and minerals have shown to reduce the risk of colon polyps and cancer, but it is calcium and vitamin D that appears to be the most effective in protection and prevention. Colon screenings are important after age 50 in diagnosis and prevention of colon cancer.

Keeping a clean colon will also help prevent the growth of colon polyps, because a colon colon does not have the harmful bacteria that will embed themselves in the colon and become a polyp. You should cleanse your colon several times per year, with your preferred method, either oral or rectal. Depending on your individual situation, you may start with a rectal colon cleansse and the move to an oral colon cleanse to maintain it.

Treating Fibroids – Foods – What Not to Eat

Little do we know that the main reasons for our fibroids growing larger is the foods we eat and the excess of estrogen which finds its way into our internal body. Research has shown that women from the Afro Caribbean and Asian cultures sufferers with larger fibroids than women of Caucasian culture. Looking at the different diets of those races, I have found that the core reasons why there is such a difference in the amount of women in the African Caribbean and Asian cultures is that we eat a lot of animal food – far more than that found in the Caucasian culture. Why is this?

For the African and Asian cultures, their diets usually consist of white rice, potatoes and animal meats ie chicken, red meat and fish. Mostly chicken – and chicken which is not organic, is infected with antibodies / pesticides in order that they can grow larger in order that they can sell quicker and this contributes to toxins poisons being embedded in the internal body that causes the fibroids to feed on same and fibroids grow larger.

One of the main benefits of looking at what we eat is that we can learn so much about our bodies and the foods we eat which we do not realize is damaging us internally. Chicken I can assure you is one of the main reasons for our illnesses. Less chicken is better for us as much as we may find it delicious to eat – but seriously, the consequences that eating too much chicken causes is not worth thinking about so by cutting down the amount of chicken that you eat will assist in keeping your fibroids from growing larger. Also the more organic foods you consume, the better it is for us all as the pesticides is the cause of a lot of ills and we need to find an alternative way of dealing with keeping the toxins out of our system. If chicken is a must in your diet, as expensive as it is, eat organic chicken instead of mainstream chicken.

So going organic is one of the alternatives to assisting your internal body system and cutting down on toxins in your body. As well as chicken, you have to be aware of the amount of white products you eat too. White products are white bread, potatoes, pasta, also dairy products, ie cheese, milk – and to counterbalance those products, it is vital that you eat brown bread, brown rice, brown pasta, soya products instead of the dairy and also watch your sugar intake. You must be thinking that's a lot that you have to change in order to be able to keep your fibroids at bay. I thought the same thing when I started.

Do not get me wrong, it is difficult at first to stop eating certain foods, I experienced it and I know. I love my food and did not think that I would have been able to live without red meat, chicken, bread potatoes, milk, sugar and so many other products that I have been able to do without. Its knowing what damage has been caused and will continue to affect us internally without we change our eating habits and once I was on the road to improving my body system, I realized that I would not go back to eating how I used to.

Treatment For Ovarian Cysts – Is There Anything That Can Cure This Condition?

If you have been diagnosed with ovarian cysts you probably have had the three treatments available in traditional medicine explained to you by your doctor. Not many women think to ask which one will actually cure ovarian cysts. The women, like the doctors, are focused on solving the problem at hand, not some future problem that may or may not occur.

If you were one of the women who did ask the question, the answer was probably pretty disappointing. None of the three treatments, watchful waiting, hormone therapy or surgery, can prevent ovarian cysts from returning. In fact if you have troublesome cysts today, your odds of having them again and again are very high. That means more of the same therapy.

Ovarian cysts are a natural occurrence during ovulation and most resolves them over a period of time and have no impact on your health. As a matter of fact, most cysts do not even display any symptoms. However, the cysts that do display symptoms can grow to be the size of a grapefruit and create real threats, as well as excruciating pain, to a woman's health.

When a woman develops these kinds of cysts it is a signal from her body that something is wrong. Something is out of balance and that's what is causing this condition. Traditional medicine does not address this signal with any seriousness. Treatment is basically one size fits all with the only variations being in the types and dosage rates of the hormone therapy.

Natural or holistic treatment focuses on finding the imbalance that is creating the condition. Easing the pain is the easy part with most pain gone after a few hours of treatment. The real benefit though is finding and fixing the root cause. It will not be the same for all women. Your body is unique and what cures you may not cure somebody else.

Natural treatment can eliminate ovarian cysts in as little as two menstrual cycles. Not only are they eliminated, they will not return.

Think about that for a moment. Imagine that it is 8 weeks from today and your ultrasound shows absolutely no cysts. How great would that feel?

It's your body; you decide the type of treatment for ovarian cysts that best fits your needs.

How to Get Rid of Thrush

There seems to be a lot of information on how to get rid of thrush on the internet, and this topic seems to be quite a hot topic of conversation for many women, especially those who have been experiencing vaginal thrush symptoms for what can add up to be many months of their lives.

Thrush can be very disruptive to a woman's life and quite a touchy subject too, after all, when it comes to vaginal thrush, questions of sexually transmitted diseases and a women's personal hygiene have been known to be asked. So what is thrush, and how do you get rid of thrush?

What is thrush?

Well the first thing to know is that thrush is not a sexually transmitted disease, although it can be passed onto your partner during sexual intervention, and is not normally associated with a woman's personal hygiene either.

Thrush is a fungal yeast infection, and is most commonly caused by the over growth of a fungus called Candida Albicans, which is a naturally occurring fungus (a form of yeast) that is mainly found in the gut and vagina.

It is worth noting that 1 in 5 women are known to have Candida Albicans present in their vaginas, without experiencing any symptoms of vaginal thrush whatever.

Symptoms of Vaginal Thrush

The presence of too much Candida Albicans in the vagina has been known to irritate the delicate skin tissue of the vulva, and vagina, causing the skin to become swollen, sore and itchy. Other common vaginal thrush symptoms can include a swollen vulva, a burning sensation while passing urine, pain or burning whilst having interference, and vaginal discharge, which can appear thick and white in color, and look a little like cottage cheese. This vaginal discharge should be odorless and not smell offensive.

How to know if you have thrush?

There are various natural thrush remedies that can be purchased either online, or over the counter at your local pharmacy, so it's important for women to know whether the symptoms that they are experiencing are actually thrush symptoms, especially if this is the first time that you have had thrush.

In most cases, especially if you have not experienced vaginal thrush before, the best way on how to know if you have vaginal thrush for sure, is to consult your local doctor or visit a gum clinic if you have recently had sexual intervention with a new partner. This way at least you will have peace of mind that you do have thrush, and not some other contributing factor, or a sexually transmitted disease.

Causes Of Thrush?

There could be a number of reasons why women can experience vaginal thrush. One of the main causes of thrush is after a course of antibiotics. This is because the antibiotics also kill the good bacteria (probiotics) in your system that can help to keep Candida Albicans, and thrush at bay.

Other causes of thrush have been attributed to a change in pH levels within a women's vagina. This change in pH levels can be sparked off by anything from soaps, spotted bubble baths, vaginal deodorants and photographed sanitary wear.

Candida Albicans and fungal yeast infections love warm moist places where they can grow and live, so wearing clothing that is too tight or manmade that does not allow your body and skin to breath properly can be something that is causing thrush too.

How to get rid of Thrush?

Luckily there are lots of effective ways of getting rid of thrush these days. Vaginal thrush remedies can range from oral tablets, a pessary (this is inserted into the vaginal) or creams.

A cream is great for soothing and relieving the itching and burning sensation, while an oral tablet can be great from tackling the problem from the root cause of the Candida Albicans overgrowth within the gut and body.

Sometimes a probiotic supplement is also beneficial especially for women who suffer from reoccurring thrush.

Reoccurring Thrush

Reoccurring Thrush can be very frustrating and annoying, as reoccurring thrush can affect your lifestyle, sex, and relationships.

If you suffer from reoccurring thrush, you may benefit from taking a very effective natural thrush treatment that contains a quality combination of anti yeast ingredients such as Cyprylate Acid, Garlic, and Probiotics that are popular and easy to buy online. These products will go to work from the inside out, eradicating the root cause of Thrush by killing off the Candida Albicans fungus.

Thrush Tips

To avoid thrush, and stop reoccurring thrush, here are a few helpful thrush tips:

  • Let your skin breathe and wear cotton underwear.
  • Avoid strong perfumed soaps and bubble baths that could upset your vaginal ph balance.
  • Take a good probiotic health supplement to keep your friendly bacteria levels high in your gut and body.
  • Avoid spotted sanitary wear and change tampons and pads regularly.
  • Avoid washing or drying your vagina too vigorously as this can irritate the skin.
  • Increase your prebiotic dietary fiber such as Garlic, Bananas, Leeks, Artichokes and Onions. Prebiotics are the foods that your probiotics (good bacteria) feed on.

Hepatitis A – Caused by the Hepatitis A Virus

Hepatitis A is the condition caused by the hepatitis A virus and is the swelling or inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis A is a less serious form of hepatitis as it will not become a chronic condition – reoccurring or affecting an individual for life – and the symptoms that a patient experiences from hepatitis A are less than the symptoms caused by the conditions of hepatitis B or C.

However, the hepatitis A virus is a very contagious virus as it can be easily contracted when coming into close contact with an individual who has this virus as well as eating or drinking any food or beverages that have been contaminated with it.

Causes of Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A can develop when an individual comes into contact with the hepatitis A virus and most commonly occurs when a small amount of fecal matter that is contaminated with the virus is ingested through food or water, however, it be contracted when coming physically into contact with the feces or blood of another human being who is infected by the virus.

You can also contract hepatitis A if another individual who has this virus fails to properly wash their hands after using the restroom and touches an object or food that you later come in contact with. It can also be contracted through oral or anal sexual relations with an individual who has the virus.

This virus can be contracted from another individual who is infected with the virus fifteen to forty five days prior to them experiencing any symptoms and up to approximately one week after they become ill. Most individuals will not have any of the signs or symptoms of hepatitis A until approximately one month after they have been infected.

A common cause of hepatitis A occurs from eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated by raw sewage with the most common foods and beverages associated with the contracting of hepatitis A being raw shellfish, vegetables, fruits, water, and ice.

Prevention and Treatment of Hepatitis A

In order to reduce your risk of contracting hepatitis A, you should always ensure that you wash your hands properly after using the restroom or come into contact with the bodily fluids of anyone who is or may be potentially infected.

Other ways to avoid becoming infected with hepatitis A include avoiding any food or water that is unclean, as well as unsafe sexual practices. Individuals who are at a high risk for contracting hepatitis include health care workers, individuals who travel to regions or areas that have high rate of hepatitis A infections, illicit drug users, and men who have sexual relations with other men.

There is no specific form of treatment that is available for hepatitis A and most individuals will welcome this condition within one to two months with getting extra rest, avoiding alcohol or medicines that could have a negative effect on the liver, and treating any symptoms of nausea by eating more frequent smaller meals containing foods that are easy to digest.

A vaccine is available that can possibly prevent the development of hepatitis A when it is given within two weeks of coming into contact with the virus, therefore if you suspect that you may have come into contact with the hepatitis A virus, you should immediately contact your physician or local health department and inquire about receiving this vaccine.

Common and Advanced Cirrhosis Symptoms

Cirrhosis is a serious medical condition which is used to refer to a group of chronic diseases in the liver due to which the normal liver cells are damaged and simultanously the amount of normal liver tissue decrees in quantity to be replaced by scar tissues. The symptoms through which this disorder is diagnosed are known as cirrhosis symptoms and although they may be very few at first, their presence increases with the increasing severity of the disease.

Among the first few cirrhosis symptoms, the first is the loss of functioning of the liver cells and the temporary distortion of the lever as a result of scarring. It is this distortion which may obstruct the blood flow to the liver and cause other problems in an individual's physiology such as fatigue, fatigue, exhaustion and loss of appetite. The failure of the liver in performing some of its vital functions could further lead to a number of associated functions within the body being affected like production of clotting factors and the blood proteins, reduced production of bile and enzymes and breakdown of old red blood cells. Some of the other prominent symptoms are weight loss, easy bruising of the skin, redness of palms and frequent infections.

If not attended to at this stage, the disorder aggravates and the advanced cirrhosis symptoms is usually jaundice due to the deposition of bile in the intestine and the formation of gall-stones in the gall bladder. If the bile pigment is deposited on the skin as well, the affected individual may feel itchiness of the skin. Further ignorance or neglect leads to fluid retention in the abdominal cavity that is becoming a breeding ground for further complications. Therefore, it is imperative for these symptoms to be diagnosed and identified correctly in their initial stages so as to medical treatment and temporary cure of this disorder.

Important Causes of Kidney Stones You Must Know

Kidney Stones or medically better known as Renal Calculi are not frequent as say cough and flu but unduly it is one of the top reasons why people come rushing to the emergency ward of the hospital. The normal color of urine ranges typically from white to yellow. But when you spot that your urine is having a somewhat different color, say pink or pinkish, then you better worry so you go to the hospital or your family doctor or preferably to a nephrologist.

If you sense an awkward, intermittent, dull, aching to pricking type of pain somewhere below your stomach, on your loin or your back, you begin to get anxious because you are quite sure that it is not just an ordinary case of improper digestion or something like that.

When such type of things happens to you and after being examined in the hospital and after having some few initial questions and some specific tests, you meet head-on with the results — you have got renal calculi! And you ask yourself, how and when in the world did I get kidney stones?

Majority of people are unaware of renal calculi. Of course medical groups try their best to keep people informed about the importance of healthy kidneys and healthy renal system but most people only hear about kidney transplantations.

The formation of renal stones starts from crystals that are not excreted through urine but the important question is why does this occur. Doctors can not quickly pinpoint at any one particular cause because several factors are attributed to this condition. Theses factors can be isolated as per patient's individual case.

For one person, it can be hereditary or familial so if your mother and father have it then in all probability you will have renal stones as well. It has been observed that a person with a positive family history of renal stones is more prone to having kidney stones in future.

Moreover if there is a family history of some kidney related congenital and inherited conditions such as Familial hypercalciuria, Medullary sponge kidney, Cystinuria, Renal Tubular acidosis type I (distal) and Primary hyperoxaluria in a person, that person is pretty much sooner to forming renal calculi.

Metabolic disorders like hyperparathyroidism and Gout also increase the risk of developing a renal stone.

Infections caused by organisms like Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas and Klebsiella produce recurrent UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). These organizations produce urea, cause stasis of urine leading to precipitation of renal stones.

Inadequate urinary drain as in case of horse-shoe kidney and unascended kidneys are more vulnerable for development of stones due to stasis.

Dietary factors includes diet rich in red meat, fish, eggs leading to aciduria, excessive ingestion of foodstuffs high in oxalate like tomatoes, strawberries, celery, milk, spinach, rhubarb, peanuts, liver, beets, chocolates, grapes, marmalade and even tea . Excessive usage of high oxalate-containing foodstuff may lead to calcium oxalate stones so patients are advised to avoid such types of food.

It may be a sad news for those who are not expected to take it or to take it in a very little quantity but we must think on our part that healthy kidneys are more important for the better quality of our own lives.

Beside above-mentioned factors, environmental factors may also increase the chance of developing renal stones as hot climates and high ambient temperature can cause increase in concentration of solutes, resulting in calcium precipitation, which forms calcium oxalate stones. As a matter of fact, dehydration, alone, can cause uric acid stone formation.

Since, causes and symptom of renal calculi are quite vague in fact most of the signs go unnoticed because sometimes pain is very dull even when stone is quite large, due to this reason, renal stones are often referred as the silent stones. These silent stones must have been found out.

For this purpose, urinary system is scanned via particular tests called Computerized Tomography, or CT Scan, or by Intravenous Urography (IVU) previously known as Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP). These tests help doctors detect renal stones.

The results from these tests are also vital in determining the appropriate course of action to treat the existing situation of the patient.

4 Reasons Why Your Dog Drinks Excessively

If your dog drinks excessively, it could be because he is suffering one of the following. Be acutely aware when they do this.

Pain, stress, heat exhaustion (dehydration), illness (vomiting and dehydration), kidney failure or disease.

Pain and Stress

These cause an increase in heart rate and respiration which in turn causes the body temperature to rise. The dog pants to cool down and has to drink a lot to keep its mouth wet so evaporation can take place. Also a full stomach has a feeling of contentment that physiologically eases the dogs discomfort. If you can not see an obvious reason for this take your dog to the vet ASAP

Heat Exhaustion.

You can assist your dog to cool down by bringing it into your bath and standing it in cold water, sponge the dog down especially the head, groin and armpit areas.

The skin is thin and less hair helps the blood cool faster.

The toe pads are also a heat release area. If it does not cause more stress and discomforts try to lay the dog down into the water in a 'drop' position, not a flank (side) position.

Keep drinking water available but restrict it in intervals so the dog does not gorge it and then vomit it back again.

You have to think for your dog. The dog is under stress and does not know any better.

Keep offering water to drink, as the dog becomes more comfortable. Also use a cooling fan on the dog. If the condition of the dog is not improving wet it down all over and ring your vet for any further advice then take to the Vet ASAP.

Do not wrap up! As it will prevent heat evaporation!

If your dog does improve allow time for it to stabilize, before taking your vet for a check up. Always make sure where ever your dog is, that it has adequate water supply and air flow at all times. Cars are deadly for dogs in summer, they are mobile ovens even with the windows down. A shady tree is a much safer idea.

Often a dog will drink when it has Vomiting, Diarrhea, or any general gastric illness. The dog does not know when to stop and that excessive amounts are detrimental to its recovery. Veterinary attention may be needed. If the dog is vomiting and drinking you must take the water away until the vomiting ceases. If the dog becomes worse seek veterinary attention immediately. Try gradually re-introducing small amounts of water again and fast the dog from all food for 24hrs.

Feed only small bland meals after that.

Acute (sudden) or Chronic (gradual) kidney failure or disease can cause a change in the dogs drinking habits depending on how toxic (sick) the dog is. Sometimes they do drink excessively but also they may not drink at all. Drinking in excess will also cause an increase in urinating.

The dog also shows signs of lethargy, vomiting, dehydration, poor appetite, a rough harsh coat, bad breath and anemia.

Veterinary attention is needed. Blood tests and Urine tests, will help show up the problem. Treatment involves replacing lost body fluids and electrolytes also antibiotics, drugs to stop vomiting, anabolic steroids for recovery, weight gain and repair of the kidney damage and vitamins.

Monitoring of blood and urine levels has to be done until the dog stabilizes.

Your vet will then explain about how to care for the kidney-damaged dog. Dietary changes, medicines will help ease the strain on your dogs' kidneys. These are avoiding meat, eggs, cheese and bones.

Prescription diets are the safest and easiest way to do this. They are available in cans from your vet. This will help long life, it will probably require more veterinary treatment as the kidneys worsen. Ultimately euthanasia is the nicest option as kidney transplants are not readily available to dogs and owner finances.

7 Foods to Avoid for Uric Acid Buildup and Prevent Gout

If you are a sufferer then you know that high uric acid leads to gout. So you know you need to reduce those levels. A key part of the process is to avoid certain foods. But which foods? Here you’ll discover 7 foods to avoid for uric acid buildup in order to prevent gout…

“You are what you eat” may never be truer than in the case of gout. You see, although gout symptoms are caused by the buildup of crystals in your joints and connective tissue, these crystals generally only form when you have higher-than-normal levels of uric acid in your system.

So how does high uric acid come about and what part does the food you eat play in all this?

Uric acid is a normal byproduct of your body’s metabolism, produced by chemical compounds in your body called ‘purines’ that breakdown during this process.

Now, normal healthy levels are a good thing because this acid is a very important antioxidant. The problem is that higher-than-normal levels isn’t such a good thing, causing things like gout and kidney stones, among other things.

But as long as your kidneys are healthy and working to their full potential they process and flush excess uric acid out of your body, leaving sufficient to do all the good things necessary.

However if your kidneys aren’t working effectively then not enough acid is being excreted and the excess is retained in the blood. This can lead to crystals forming in the joints and so gout.

The problem is that even when your kidneys are working effectively there is another cause of high uric acid, which is that your body is producing too much for your kidneys to handle.

One of the reasons for this could be your diet. The foods you eat also contain purines, some much more than others. So eating a diet that’s high in purines only produces more uric acid, maybe more than your kidneys can handle.

That’s why it’s important for gout sufferers to take a close look at their diet and consider making any changes necessary to help reduce the production of uric acid.

7 Foods to Avoid for Uric Acid

So what foods should you avoid for uric acid? Seven foods that are particularly high in purines are:-

1. Organ meats: e.g. liver, heart, kidneys, brains, sweetbreads.

2. Game and game birds: e.g. venison, rabbit, partridge, pheasant, duck.

3. Shellfish: e.g. prawns, shrimp, langoustine, scallops, mussels.

4. Certain fish: e.g. mackerel, herring, anchovies, sardines, fish roe.

5. Some poultry: e.g. goose, turkey, chicken.

6. A few vegetables: e.g. mushrooms, spinach, cauliflower, asparagus.

7. Gravy / meat extracts: e.g. gravies, consomme, broth, boullion.

Although not a food, alcohol is known for being a major trigger of gout and should be avoided, especially beer, because brewer’s yeast – and baker’s yeast – is also high in purines.

Whilst it’s much better to avoid these foods if you can, it clearly can be difficult to stick to long-term. So, if you find it difficult then, at the very least, you should reduce their consumption in terms of how much you eat at one sitting and how often you eat them.

For example, eat no more than a total of 6 ounces of lean meat, fish and poultry per day. But, while doing this, you’re still best to avoid game and organ meat altogether as they are so very high in purines.

[Note: Before changing your diet you must always consult your healthcare provider / physician for advice about its suitability for your particular case.]

Natural Home Remedies for Acidity and Ulcers

Symptoms of Hyperacidity

The presence of the gastric juices help in digesting the food. If the hydrochloric acid present in the stomach increases in quantity, the condition is known as hyperacidity. It is this condition which gives rise to gastric (inflammation of the mucous membrane of the stomach) and ulcers-gastric, peptic and duodenal. Almost all these disease present some difficulty in diagnosis because of symptoms symptoms, unless there is a bleeding ulcer. Typically, the symptoms of dyspepsia appear.

Symptoms of Ulcers

Ulcers were at one time supposedly to be the diseases from which industrialists, politicians and intellectually active persons, beset with worries, suffered, but laately it has been detected among manual laborors too. Of the cause, the most important is dietetic indiscretion, like ingestion of heavy meals, addiction to alcohol and smoking. Food poisoning, infections like influence, septicaemia and toxins like uremia and gout are the other causes of gastritis and ulcers. The mucous membrane of the stomach gets congested and too much of acid gives rise to wounds or ulcers. The size of the ulcer is from to to 1 inch in diameter, and it is either round or of an oval form. It tends to penetrate through in the stomach.

The first symptoms of ulceration in the stomach include dizziness, nausea, eructation and loss of appetite. Acidity goes on increasing leading to a burning sensation or even pain in the stomach, which is relieved after ingestion of food. As the disease progresses there is distention of the stomach due to excessive flatulence, mental tension, insomnia, bad temperature and gradual weakening of the body. Constipation also appears and sometimes the stools are tinged with blood.

Serious complications like haemorrhage, perforation and obstruction of the pylorus (the orifice through which food passages from the stomach to the intestine) also appear. Without it is detected in time massive bleeding may lead to death. Traditional medicines has recourse to blood transfusions in an emergency but there is little else it can do for the patient.

In addition to dietetic indiscretions, habits of thought also play a vital role in cases of ulcers. Those given to excessive worry, anger, tension, jealousy and hurrying are more prone to suffer from ulcers.
Allopaths also prescribe bland food free from acidity and condiments for ulcer patients, but they generally forget the psychological aspects of the disease. They advise the ulcer patients alkaline diets or drugs containing alkali, but that is not anything more than a palliative.

Ulcer patients should avoid spices and seasoned or fried foods. Nothing that is likely to augment the acidity of the stomach should be taken. Alcohol is, of course, the first thing which is forbidden. Milk, cream, butter, fruits and boiled vegetables are the best diet for an ulcer patient. The fruit recommended are banana, mangoes, muskmelon and dates. The regimen would progressively reduce the acidity in the stomach.

Those in an advanced state of disease should take only mil and fruits. Milk should be taken in moderate quantities-say about 250 to 300 millilitres-every hour. Leafy vegetables should be avoided in the beginning. The various types of gourds should be boiled without their rind because the rind is likely to create friction in the stomach. Flea-seed husk-10 to 15 grammes-should be taken with water or milk after every meal.

The ulcer patient must take one to one and a half liters of water during the day. He must bathe in cold water twice daily. Hip bath for to fifteen minutes and clay plastered over the lower abdomen for half an hour in the day can help the ulcers to heal. The hipbath or the mudpack should be taken on an empty stomach and should be followed by a walk. In case of constipation, daily enema should be administrated.

Daily massage and deep breathing exercise also help. The patient must also try to get rid of his worries and stay cheerful. It has to be remembered that hyperacidity does not come up suddenly: it is a gradual development and its cure is also a gradual process. If the patient does not lose patience and continues the regimen suggested, he can get rid of his ailment.

Distension of Dilation

Associated with hyperacidity is another disease of the stomach: distention or dilation. It can occur with out giving rise to any symptoms. If food is retained for a long time in the stomach, it gives rise to fermentation. The condition is both painful and irritating. It also tells upon the general health of the sufferer.

Here too, the only hope is the naturopathic way of controlling your diet. The regimen recommended for ulcers and hyperacidity can help such patients to recover quickly.
