Hearing Loss Detection

The detection of hearing injury and deafness should be done since someone is still a baby. The detection can be done by parent in a simple way. This can be done by making a simple experiment toward the baby.

In checking the hearing ability of a baby, parent can do it by making a sound around him and see whether there is a response from him or not. When there is a response, then the baby has a normal hearing ability. Typically, not all cases of hearing loss at birth are known. This is because not all parents check their baby's hearing ability. So, they do not know whether the baby has this hearing disorder or not.

There are some indications that parents need to know to detect hearing loss in infants. For example, the baby sleeps nicely although there is loud sound around him or if a six-month-old baby can babble but he can not respond when there is sound. Those are two examples that sign a baby has hearing loss.

The detection of hearing injury and deafness has to be started before the baby out of the hospital or at the age of two days. Or, the hearing loss should be detected at the latest at the age of 1 month if the baby born outside the hospital. In this matter, the diagnosis of deafness should have ascertained before the age of 3 months so that the installation of hearing aids can be initiated since the age of 6 months.

Further, there are some things that make an infant has high-risk hearing loss and deafness. The things are a baby with a birth weight less than 1500 grams, a pregnant woman who uses drugs such as tuberculosis drugs and antibiotics, and a pregnant woman who received chemotherapy. Instead of those things, other things that make infant has high risk hearing loss are bacterial meningitis, cholestasis and the use of ventilator for more than five days.

When a baby has three of those things then it is likely he will experience deafness fifty to sixty times more than non-risk infant. Additionally, infants that are treated in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) have ten times the risk of hearing loss compared to those who are not treated in the NICU.

Since hearing loss detection is an important thing to do, parent should pay attention to this matter very carefully. In this matter, they should do the detection in order to make sure that their baby does not have this hearing disorder.

Ronald Reagan, Movie Actor

In 1937, 26-year-old Chicago Cubs radio announcer Ronald Reagan had the acting bug rekindled in him. The former Dixon, Illinois native performed on stage in high school and college but during the Great Depression he had drifted into the sports world. In those days the Cubs trained in California and Reagan went with them to get away from the Iowa cold and pursue his movie star dream. Through a friend he got a screen test at Warner Bros .; the studio executives had mixed reactions. He was no Robert Taylor, but he did have more of an All-American look than some of the stars that worked at the Warner's factory, such as James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart. The glasses and crew cut had to go. When questioned about his acting experience Reagan told several lies to pad his resume. The casting director asked him to stick around an extra day for more tests. "No dice", Ron said feigning indifference when he was really desperate. "I'm on the train with the Cubs." He left the studio thinking he had blown any chance to be signed by them. He was amazed later that same day when Warners made an offer to put him under contract at $ 200.00 a week, and hastily agreed before they changed their mind.

In typical Hollywood fashion the former radio announcer was cast as a radio announcer. It seemed like every film his big line was "Get me the City desk! I have a story that will break this town wide open!" Ronald, a former lifeguard and kept detailed records of all the lives he saved, preferred playing heroes to the drunken socialite he depicted along side Bette Davis in Dark Victory (1939) even if he was be in mostly b-movies. He learned quickly that Hollywood could be a cutthroat place. He dated some of his leading ladies who fell out of love after their movie was over. He worked with insecure stars like Errol Flynn, who demanded that the one-inch shorter Reagan not stand next to him on camera. And there were tough Directors like the Hungarian born Michael Curtiz, with what he made Santa Fe Trail (1940). In one scene the young actor watched in amusement as Curtiz kept telling an extra playing a minister to keep moving backwards until he fell of a scaffold, severely injuring his leg. "Get me another minister!" shouted the angry director.

In order to better his career he suggested to his bosses that they buy the story of the legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne and Reagan could play the role of the tragic halfback George Gipp. Warner Bros. liked the first idea more than the second: he was told he was too small. Reagan produced a photograph of himself playing college football; he was actually bigger than Gipp. He got the part but Knee Rockne All American (1940) was not all fun and games. One day Reagan showed up to shoot the scene where Gipp ran the ball eighty yards for a touchdown. He was told he was not needed. They would film something else instead. He proceeded to eat a huge and unhealthy breakfast. Then he was informed that they were going to film the run after all. After the third eighty-yard take Reagan dashed far past the goal line where he privately lost his meal.

Reagan was a political animal right away, driving his Hollywood co-workers to distraction with his praise of the policies of Franklin Roosevelt. It was mostly just talk; he rejected any suggestion that he might someday go into politics. One time he was yammering about about the necessity of government aid when a friend suggested he run for President. "You do not like my acting either!" He wailed.

Ronald Reagan's Star rose with King's Row (1942) where he had a dramatic performance in which his legs were amputated and he screamed out, "Where's the rest of me?" King's Row cave his agent Lew Wasserman the leverage to negotiate a solid movie star salary for him. But his acting opportunities slowed because of military service during World War II. Although his terrible vision kept him from seeing combat (he was told that if he was sent overseas he would accidently shoot an American General and probably miss him) the short propaganda films he appeared in (for which he received military, not movie star pay) did little to help his career. He worked in propaganda films like the Irving Berlin musical This Is The Army (1943) where he received only his military pay. He overheard young women, who worked at his army base, swooning over newer, younger stars and when the war ended Reagan felt insecure and past his prime.

He met Jane Wyman on the set of Brother Rat (1938). She was attracted to him right away but surprised if his niceness was just an act. She convinced herself he was the real deal when she saw he was just as kind to waiters as he was to big shots at the studio. But after the war her career moved ahead of his with her Academy Award winning performance as a deaf mute in Johnny Belinda (1948). There was gossip about her having had a love affair with her co-star Lew Ayres. And his constant harping on politics drove Jane Wyman crazy; sometimes she would yawn away in public when he got on his soapbox. Still with all that Reagan was shocked when they divorced, that was something that happened to other people. During that time the stressed out Midwesterner came down with a severe case of pneumonia that nearly killed him.

Ronald Reagan became frustrated with both his career and his personal life. In The Hagen Girl (1947) he reluctantly became the first man to kiss twenty-year-old Shirley Temple on screen. He argued that he was that he should end up with Shirley's schoolteacher, but the Director was Reagan's age, had a teenage girl and wanted to make a point. Movie patrons shouted, "Oh no!" when he and Shirley got into a clinch. He became President of the Screen Actors Guild and as his politics drifted more to the right threats came from Communists in Hollywood. Perhaps they would throw acid in his face or his bomb his house. He began carrying a gun for protection. Movie bosses saw Reagan more as a labor negotiator than a viable Movie Star. He broke his leg at a charity baseball game, which cost him two movie roles and a sizable amount of money. He publicly stated he could do a better job choosing his roles than Jack Warner, who fired him after fourteen years without a handshake. He enjoyed making Bedtime For Bonzo (1951) at Universal but he knew his amazing chimp co-star was stealing the show when the Director Fred De Cordova started giving personal instructions to Bonzo instead of his trainer. Reagan's money problems became so severe in the early 1950s that he tried to eek out extra cash by selling his autographs through the mail.

After Ron became the President of the Screen Actors Guild in 1949, he met Nancy Davis a not very ambitious actress who needed her name cleared from being linked to a Communist group. They hit it off immediately, but he took it slow and dated several actions in Hollywood. When he woke up one morning with a girl whose name he could not remember he decided it was time to marry again. He and Nancy co-starred in the disappointing, big budget Hellcats Of The Navy (1957) but the new Mrs. Reagan was far more interested in her family than acting and unlike his first wife never threatened his ego.

Ronald Reagan became a rich man by moving into television. Thanks to the advice of his longtime agent and manager Lew Wasserman he became the host of General Electric Theater (1953-1962). But success in TV did not translate into high demand at the box office. The movie offers became fewer. In 1964 he made a film called The Killers where he played a villain for the first time. Audiences were shocked when the nice guy they thought they knew smacked co-star Angie Dickinson in the face. Reagan found the role unpalatable. He had a falling out with Wasserman who felt he was a whining has-been. Faced with a future of similar type roles made it easier for him to go into politics full time.

Ronald Reagan denied that he was a great communicator. He felt that the content of his words was more important than his style. But he never forgot his movie roots. "Win one for the Gipper"! "May the force be you!" "Go ahead! Make my day!" They all became political sound bytes for him. And sometimes he could use film references as a source for witticisms. Early in his first term as Governor of California the now very conservative Reagan described an encounter with a hippie. "He looked like Tarzan, acted like Jane and smelled like Cheetah!" But Reagan had to take it as well as dish it out. Once as President he leaned on a prominent Democrat. "We have to cut taxes, damn it! Do you know when I was in the movies I was in the 90% tax bracket." "Ninety percent? My God, Mr. President, I did not think you were that good of an actor!" The President roared with laughter.

One Technique to Try in Order to Cure Your Stammer

The reason you stammer is a result of blocks and triggers. Triggers are physical and mental states which cause you to stutter. Many exercises are devoted to avoiding triggers to avoid stuttering. We'll talk about triggers at another time.

Blocks, as you would imagine, are fluency obstacles you encounter when you try to speak. A typical block would be to repeat a particularly troublesome word. This is where the ccc-cat comes into your speech. You repeat "Cah" over and over because it is a block in your fluency. You with me?

Like triggers, if you can identify your blocks you can overcome them and speak more clearly. Here's one exercise to help you increase your blocks. Ready?

Block Busting Stammering Exercise

Step 1:
Read aloud for 1 minute from your favorite book or magazine. Try your best to speak fluently, but do not stress over it. At the end of the minute add up how many words you read. This is your baseline. For example maybe you read 50 words in 1 minute.

Step 2:
Now, re-read the same passage again focusing on reading at a pace which allows you to continue moving forward without major stammering. This may be very slow – do not worry! How many words did you read this time in the 1 minute? It may be less, it may be slightly more. The key is to read at an even pace at a speed which allows you to continue reading without stuttering.

Step 3:
Continue this exercise of reading out loud and counting the words you get through in a minute. Slowly beginning speeding up as you read. Only speed up if you are able to get through the passage without a stammer. Focus on moving forward through the passage and slowly increasing speed over time.

This exercise allows you to work through your block until one day you realize you are able to read more words, in the 1 minute time without stammering at all. Lather, rinse, repeat from there until you are up to a comfortable speaking speed. Make sure you read different paths or different books as you work this exercise.

Why Caring For The Nose And Throat Is Important For Healthy Living

Most of the acute infections to which man is heir enter the body through the nose and mouth. Common colds, influenza, tonsillitis, pneumonia, scarlet fever, diphtheria, infantile paralysis, and so on, through a long list of diseases, find their way into the body through this portal. Measures which reduce the ineffective material which gains access to the nose and mouth, such as frequent washing of the hands and keeping them away from the face, the use of individual drinking glasses, and the avoidance of exposure to persons with these diseases, are all Worth while. There is, however, little or nothing of value in the way of local preventive measures to suggest. In fact, the best advice that can be given to most persons concerning the care of the nose and throat is briefly expressed by: "Whatever you do, do not."

The equivalent value of gargles, nasal douches, jellies, sprays, or drops, the so-called "control by nasal hygiene," is based on nothing more than advertising propaganda. Furthermore, the regular use of such preparations without medical advice is pernicious. These preparations usually give temporary relief of nasal stuffiness but they also interfere with the normal protective mechanism of the nasal mucous membrane and in time may cause sufficient irritation to give rise to a chronic catarrhal condition. When this occurs, the medication still gives temporary relief, so the natural inclining is to use it more frequently.

There is a possibility also that over a period of time there way be enough absorption of these substances to be deleterious. Snuffers of cocaine or of snuff soon learn that absorption from the mucous membrane of the nose is prompt and efficient. In like manner, other substances are absorbed and in some cases the effects may well be cumulative and toxic.

Obstruction to Breathing
The most frequent cause of obstruction to breathing is the common cold, a condition of such importance that we have devoted several articles to its consideration. Uncomplicated colds rarely last more than a week or two, but the sinus infections which may complicate them are frequently protracted. The other common causes of chronic nasal obstruction are adenoids in children and allergic conditions, nasal polyps, and abnormalities of the nasal septum in older persons. Lasting relief can be expected only by eliminating the cause of the obstruction, whatever this may be. Self-medication merely aggravates the trouble.

Adenoids
Adenoids is the dull, pinched, stupid expression of the mouth breathing child cries for relief. Susceptibility to colds and ear infections, impaired hearing, and a deformed upper jaw are among the other results of chronic mouth-breathing by children. The usual cause of this is adenoids, an overgrowth of tonsils like tissue located in the upper part of the pharynx behind the nose. Fortunately this can be relieved by a simple surgical procedure.

Abnormalities of the Nasal Septum
The septum is the partition between the two sides of the nose. It is composed in part of cartilage and in part of bone. Theoretically the septum should be straight but it is rarely. In fact, a perfectly straight septum is just as rare as an artistically perfect nose. Although most deformities of the septum are of little or no consequence, they are often of sufficient seriousness to interfere with breathing. This not only is annoying but also predisposes to colds and sinus infection. In such cases an operative procedure to straighten the septum is indicated.

Sinus Infection
The term "sinus infection" is now used almost as loosely as nasal catarrh was in the past; many persons who because of some nasal stuffiness think they have sinus infection do not have it at all. On the other hand, sinus infection is of such frequency and seriousness that it merits careful diagnosis and treatment.

The sinuses are cavities in the bones of the face which are connected by small openings with the nasal easily and are lined with mucous membrane which is (continuous with the mucous membrane of the nose. days without much improvement, the infection has extended to the membranes lining the sinuses, especially to the lower sinuses, which do not drain so easily as the upper group. condition will heal promptly as the individual's resistance increases and the natural forces of repair improve under the general measures advisable in these conditions.

The actual cause of sinus disease is infection from the nose, but predisposing factors are violent blowing of the nose, a hypersensitive allergic nasal mucous membrane, diving, swimming with the nose in the water, possibly damp climates, and the promiscuous use of sprays, oils, and antiseptics in the nose during acute colds.

Acute sinus infections often clear up without treatment or with the application of such simple measures as heat, steam inhalations, rest, and improved nasal drainage. Occidentally, however, the infection is so severe or drain so inadequate that pus accumulates in the sinus. This, also, may clear up promptly or it may develop into a sub acute or chronic condition. In acute sinus infection local symptoms of nasal discharge, pain, and headache, as well as general symptoms of fever, fatigue, general aches, and cough, are the rule. In chronic sinus disease, on the other hand, the local symptoms may be absolutely absent. Occidentally infection from a sinus may be transported by the blood to other parts of the body, such as the joints, kidneys, heart, or brain. It is a condition potentially so serious calls for adequate medical supervision and treatment.

Hay Fever
The sneezing, sniffling, and nose blowing, commonly called "hay fever," occurs with greater or less frequency the year round. In fact, hay fever and related allergic conditions, such as asthma, hives, and certain eczema, headaches, and digestive disturbances, occur whenever the substance to which an individual is sensitive gains access to the body in sufficient quantities

The symptoms considered typical of hay fever may be produced by pollen of plants, grasses, or trees, by the dander or hair of animals, by lint, feathers, foods, and many other substances. The pollen, however, are the only substances of this sort which are definitely seasonal. Most cases of spring hay fever are due to grass pollen, although even before the grasses begin to pollinate there are some cases, usually considered spring colds, which are due to the pollen of trees. The pollen of most of the flowering plants is reliably large and heavy and is transported from one plant to another by bees or other insects; hence, they are rarely responsible for hay fever. On the other hand, the pollen of grasses, trees, and many other plants are wind-borne and spell misery to hundreds of thousands of persons each year. Such pollen grains may be transported severe distances and to great heights by air currents.

The most common causes of spring hay fever, frequently called "spring colds" or "rose colds," are the pollen of trees and grasses, while the pollen of ragweed, Wormwood, Russian thistle, and pig weed are responsible for most of the fall hay fever. Goldenrod, long thought to be the cause of fall hay fever, has been exonerated. It and other flowering plants have been suspected in connection with hay fever because they happen to flower at the time that weeds with inconspicuous flowers are pollinating.

After a physician has determined the cause of one's hay fever, the simplest way to prevent it is to live, at least during the half fever season: in a region in which the pollen to which one it sensitive do not exist. Another way to reduce exposure to pollen is to spend most of the day during the hay fever season in filtered air. This gives relief in many cases.

For the unfortunate hay fever victims who can not move away during the hay fever season and whose homes and places of work are not air-conditioned, there is still considerable hope of obtaining relief, for it is usually possible so to increase one's tolerance that one will be free from symptoms or at least reasonably comfortable even though exposed to high concentrations of pollen. This is accomplished by having a series of injections of the pollen to which one is sensitive. In order to be effective this treatment must be based upon an accurate diagnosis of the causes of the hay fever and the inclusion in the treatment substance of all the pollen which are liable for symptoms. Failure to do these two things has been the reason of many of the unsatisfactory results from this type of preventive treatment of hay fever in the past.

Temporary relief in hay fever and other allergic conditions run frequently are obtained by the use of a reliably new group of drugs called antihistamines.

The Tonsils
With so many tonsils being removed one naturally wonders which the tonsils are for. Actually there is no certain evidence as to their purpose, although it is generally thought that they have some sort of protective function, ineffective though this seems to be in most cases.

In childhood, tonsils and adenoids are naturally large but both decrease in size during later life. There are three conditions which make removal of the tonsils and adenoids advised:
(1) repeated attacks of acute tonsillitis or quinsy;
(2) Enlargement of tonsils and adenoids to the point of causing obstruction to the nose or the Eustachian tube;
(3) Reasonable suspicion that the tonsils are serving as a focus of infection. In the event of a serious disease condition in which other possible focus of infection has been eliminated, it is sometimes advisable to sacrifice the tonsils even though the local condition does not offer adequate proof of tonsil infection.

Miraculous results can not be expected from removal of the tonsils; but when definite indications for tonsillectomy exist, sufficient improvement may be expected to amply justify the Operation. Tonsillectomy is not a dangerous procedure if adequate precautions are taken to safeguard against accident. Undoubtedly many tonsils have been needlessly removed in the past and more will be sacrificed in the future. On the other hand, the indications for the removal of tonsils and adenoids are being more accurately defined and medical opinion on the subject of tonsillectomy is becoming more and more conservative.

How To Prevent Atrophy And Death In Your LEAN Project

Developing a LEAN culture with a LEAN Management system developed in parallel with the LEAN process system ensures that the roles, processes, standards, and procedures are documented and followed. Although we are not discussing physics, the law of entropy applies. It states "Organized systems tend to move toward disorganization". LEAN involves the adoption of new processes, work habits, and the use of new tools. Everyone must learn new habits and, as psychologists say, extinguish the old habits. It is so easy to fall back into old habits. They lurk in the back of our mind waiting for the opportunity to resurface. This propensity of old habits to re-occurs is the reason why a management system must be developed and implemented in parallel with the LEAN process system.

A LEAN management system will provide the tools and processes to maintain and support the LEAN process system. It will sustain the integrity of your system and ensure you realize the benefits of LEAN. A management system will close the loop on processes and allow employees to make continuous improvements. A LEAN production system and a LEAN management system are interrelated.

For example, a company instituted LEAN and standardized processes in a major area. They developed a flow for the work and cross trained employees and immediate supervisors so that flow could be maintained. The implementation rejected in less wait time for customers, reduction in time and costs, and an increase in quality. But then, employees in the LEAN area were transferred to new areas, management changed their focus to the latest new technology, and new employees were not cross trained. LEAN tools to document abnormalities stacked up and were not reviewed and no one acted on them. The result was a return to old habits and business as usual, which affected customer relations and profits. When management tried to reinstate LEAN, there was resistance and many felt it was a failure because it did not last, so why try again?

Actually, LEAN had worked but it was not sustained because there was not a parallel management system developed. Another contributing factor was the lack of discipline in completing, reviewing, and acting upon LEAN tools. LEAN is not a one-time fix but a journey to continuous improvement.

The tools in LEAN make sense and are easy to use. The challenge is to actually employ the discipline to complete the charts, interpret data, and make the improvements. Let's take a small scale example of what can happen when the tools are not used and the processes in not followed. In a manufacturing plant, an employee on the line had a call for the production of a number of units of a product not produced every day. The employee was considered very knowledgeable about the product and had a standard of work document. His team leader also had a standard of work document for the inspection of the process. The employee took a quick look at the steps in the standard of work and began producing the product. Unfortunately, he skipped an important step that ensured quality and eliminated customer complaints. This would have been noticed on the first unit or at least in the first hour of production if the team leader had inspected as required in her standard of work. But, she relied on the skill of the employee and turned her attention to another area of ​​responsibility. The result was the shipment of a below-standard product and customer complaints.

Had the employee and the manager followed the standard of work and both used their LEAN tools, no sub-standard product would have been shipped and one or the other may have found another opportunity for improvement as they would have a fresh look at the process.

The objective is to develop a LEAN culture that includes everyone; that means executives, managers, team leaders, and employees. LEAN includes new work habits and like the development of personal habits, you must have a license to employ the new habit.

It is the development of a culture. It is something that evolves as the employees and executives change. It is the result of experience. It results from the implementation of the two LEAN systems. It also results from a new way of approaching things. It includes respect for the brain power, capabilities, and experience of the employees. They are closest to the work and can provide valuable insights and innovative ideas.

Many people think that technology alone will ensure quality and improve production, but that is not true. Alex Warren, a former Executive Vice President of Toyota, tells how the technology alerts to defects but the employee has the power to stop the production line and fix the problem. He says it puts power into the hands of the employees and they know they count and feel both the responsibility and the power.

In many companies, executives sit in their office and either read reports or attend briefing sessions. However, going to see for yourself provides a different level of understanding. In one of the Success CDs that came with my copy of the magazine, Darren Hardy told of how he was brought in to do a turnaround for a company. One of his first recommendations was for the owner to take a walk around the building at least one or two times a week for 30 minutes and find an employee doing something right and compliment that person. He also recommended asking employees what were their challenges and what would help overcome the challenge. Darren said to ask questions so you understand what you observe and what the employee is telling you. The owner was impressed with the success of this change. Employees began to feel valued and make recommendations. Production and quality improved. Of course there were other changes as well, but this is an example of a change in habit and how cultures are developed.

Glaucoma and Laser Surgery

Certain factors can cause poor drainage of aqueous fluids in the eye and this results in the build up of pressure which can cause damage to the optic nerves that helps the eye function for vision. This leads to an eye disease called glaucoma and if left untreated, it can cause permanent loss of vision. Through the years many techniques and procedures have been developed to diagnose and treat it and at this time the most promising solution is glaucoma laser surgery.

Glaucoma comes in different forms and determining what type of glaucoma a patient has helps in determining what treatment options there are. Initially, in an attempt to relieve pressure in the eye, doctors give eye drops and medication taken orally are given. If it does not help, then glaucoma laser surgery is the next option.

Argon laser trabeculoplasty is one form of glaucoma laser surgery technique used primary open angle glaucoma. Tiny burns are made into the trabecular network of the eyes to improve the draining and flow of aqueous fluid in the eyes. A specific form of this procedure is selective laser trabeculoplasty or SLT. This uses laser beams to remove only very specific target cells in the trabecular network. As a result, it improves the flow of aqueous fluids and relieves the pressure.

In some cases, it may take two sessions and in some, it may require repeating the procedure after two or three years. This, however is recommended because it avoids the need for medication after the procedure. It is also the glaucoma laser surgery procedure commonly recommended for pigmentary glaucoma which is common among males of African-American descent.

Angle closure glaucoma results if the space or angle between the iris and cornea is too narrow and this results in poor drainage of aqueous fluids. Peripheral iridotomy is the glaucoma laser surgery option for this type.

To relieve the pressure, laser beams are used to make a small hole on the iris. The space or angle widens as the iris moves away from it. This corrects the flow of aqueous fluids.

For more severe cases of glaucoma, the procedure usually recommended is laser cyclophotocoagulation. An example is when new blood vessels are formed in the eye as a result of diabetic retinopathy. The new blood vessels can seriously affect the flow of aqueous fluids in the eye resulting in pressure buildup. This leads to a form of glaucoma called neovascular glaucoma.

For this glaucoma laser surgery procedure, the doctor uses endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation to observe the ciliary body. This is also connected to an endoscopic camera. This will then guide the application of the laser beam to treat the ciliary body so it reduces or stops the production of fluids. By using a laser beam, part of the ciliary body is destroyed so that it no longer produces aqueous fluid. Less aqueous fluid means less pressure on the eye.

The study

Conducted over several years by the York University Faculty of Health, co-supported by the Government of Nova Scotia and 3 riding associations, the study began with a meticulous countrywide survey to determine the ‘typical’ rider.

That was the entire first phase of this huge experiment.

Then researchers observed 128 riders, divided into 6 groups: 3 age classifications, male and female. After modifying these riders’ equipment, they could measure physical effects: heart rate; oxygen consumption; muscle fatigue and exertion, etc.

The findings

Riding an off-road vehicle requires genuine and serious physical effort. According to Canadian government fitness standards, it should positively affect your health.

While riding, riders’ use of oxygen increased by 3.5 to 6 times their level at rest. That’s 600% more! And according to standards set by the American College of Sports Medicine, that constitutes moderately intense physical activity.

That same moderate intensity taxes the heart and fatigues the muscles. How much? About the same amount as those other individual sports you take at your own pace, like skiing, golf or climbing.

A typical ATV ride was 2-3 hours; ORM was 1-2 hours. The amount of work required in the upper body and arms, if practiced regularly, was enough to increase muscle and skeletal fitness. And how regularly did they need to ride to begin realizing that increase? Just once or twice a week!

The biggie

Researchers also noticed the emotional high that fit people always talk about: “enhanced quality of life and stress reduction”. This surprised no riders.

Insulin Delivery Systems – The Needle, the Pen and the Pump

Insulin is the lifesaver of a type 1 diabetic. Some with type 2 also depends on this hormone to regulate their skyrocketing blood sugar levels. There are techniques to deliver the needed insulin into your body. It can be injected using a fine gauge needle with an insulin syringe. Or, it can be delivered utilizing an insulin pen which is actually a cartridge pre-filled with the medication. The other technique is through a pump system attached outside the body.

The Needle Technique

This technique deliveries insulin in individual doses and is injected subcutaneously. You use a fine gauged needle and a syringe with specially marked increments in International Units.

Most diabetics know this technique. After washing your hand, mix the insulin by gently rolling between your hands or by turning the bottle slowly up and down. Clean the rubber stopper with alcohol, pull the plunger back to the number of insulin needed, push the needle through the rubber stopper and push the plunger, leaving the needle and bottle upside down. The tip of the needle should be in the insulin and then extract the right amount of the hormone.

Select the site, pinch the skin to a mound, insert the needle into your skin at a 90 degree angle and then push the plunger slowly down until all the insulin is injected. Then release the pinched skin, wait for some seconds and pull out the needle.

There are two types of insulin therapy that uses the needle technique the conventional and the intensive which is also called flexible insulin regimen.

Conventional insulin therapy uses the rapid- or intermediate-acting. Usually, it is injected twice or thrice daily. Meals are scheduled to match the anticipated peaks of insulin profiles. Frequent blood glucose measurements are not done. This method is still in use for a small proportion of cases. There is less needle pricks than the intensive insulin regimen.

Intensive insulin therapy increases the insulin injections to four or more injections a day. Mealtimes are not as rigid scheduled but can be flexible with variable carbohydrates choices and physical activities.

Obviously, you'll be using as much as 1,400 needle stick a year. There is the inconvenience of injecting insulin multiple times daily and you have to find a time and place for your insulin injection wherever you may be.

Blood glucose levels are not well controlled in both the conventional and intensive therapy.

The Pen Technique

The pen is a more convenient insulin delivery system. The disposable needle is attached to pen which is actually a cartridge pre-filled with insulin and a dial to measure insulin dose.

The method of using an insulin pen is simple: screw on an unused pen needle, prime the pen to remove any air from the needle, turn the dial to the number of units needed, make a mound in the skin, inset the needle, press the button on the end of the pen to inject the insulin. Count to five and remove the needle straight out.

Obviously, this system is more convenient that the needle technique. It delivers a more accurate dosage with better patient compliance. Different makes of pens are especially suited for older adults, adolescents, children and pregnant women. The insulin needles are smaller and results in less pain.

The Pump

An insulin pump consists of a small tank of insulin about the size of a cellphone worn outside the body such as on your abdomen, back, leg or arm. A tiny catheter inserted under the skin is connected to a tube joined to this reservoir of insulin. The insulin pump is programmed by a wireless device.

Pumps deliver insulin in three ways namely: through basal rate, bolus and correction. It supplies small increments of rapid- or short-acting insulin to the body over a 24 hour period and is termed the basal rate. This replaces the need for a long-acting insulin shot that has to be administrated twice daily and roughly accounts for 50 percent of a your daily insulin requirement. The boluses are insulin injections administrated by the pump for the carbs you eat at meal times while the correction is to adjust the pre-meal insulin bolus for glucose values ​​outside of your blood glucose target range. The basal rates comes as low as 0.025 units per hour and the bolus rates of 0.1 unit doses.

The advantage of the pump is it improves blood glucose control by calculating individualized basal rates. It affords you convenience so that your mealimes should not be rigidly scheduled. It also gives you the freedom to choose what to eat.

Additionally, the pump delivers a special meal bolus in the event of delays in absorption of some foods. Thus, large swings of blood glucose levels are avoided and less frequency of hypoglycemia even at night.

On the down side, a pump can malfunction.it can deliver too little or too much insulin. Since the pump only utilizes rapid-acting insulin, if the pump fails or too little is pumped out you might be at risk for ketoacidosis.

It sounds good to use a pump but it is expensive. With the additional cost of insulin pump supplies replacement and other diabetic supplies most diabetics can not afford it.

As with the needle and the pen, you've still got to test your blood sugar levels and have a bolus before meals and check your blood sugar levels before meals and at bedtime.

Your Choice

Choosing the best for you depends on many factors such as convenience and comfort; acceptance and knowledge on the mechanisms of its use; how controlled your blood sugar level is; support and guidance from your health care provider; and costs and your lifestyle.

Some would opt to use the needle while some would send praises to the pump and some would stick to their pens.

Whirlpool Use and Whirlpool Temperatures for Physical Therapy

In physical therapy, whirlpool refers to a special kind of bathtub used in water baths or hydrotherapy. Whirlpools generate air bubbles and water from pumps placed at strategic points allowing the flow of air and water to massage specific muscles of the body. The intensity of circulation of air and water provides either gentle or deep massage. Whirlpools can be either cold or hot with adjustable whirlpool temperatures for physical therapy.

There are different types of whirlpools. They can be permanent fixtures or portable sets. Some whirlpool designs allow full body submersion and others are made for treatment of extremities only. One Man Was Not Only Healed But Made Whole – It Was As If He Had Never Contracted This Disease

Walking into a village one day, Jesus Christ is met by ten lepers.

These men would be sorry sights. Their bodies were riddled with this horrible disease. They came as near as they might dare. Men with leprosy had to keep away from others, one hundred paces at least.

Crying out, they ask Jesus for mercy. This was no beautiful quiet whispered prayer. That does not happen when you are desperate.

Leprosy, like sin, is contagious.

It is loathsome, spreads easily, and separates people from people. Jesus saw these deformed limbs and diseased bodies, and had compassion on them. How could Jesus do anything else? Was this not why he had come into the world? This was certainly one of the main reasons.

Jesus cave these lepers very specific instructions. He commanded them with that authority which only the Son of God could exercise. They were cleared of their leprosy, immediately. Read the account of what actually happened as it was written by a medical doctor. Turn to the detail of this scenario in Luke Chapter 17.

One of the ten, a Samaritan, saw that he was healed. The pain disappeared. The sores vanished.

He came back to the place where Jesus was, and worshiped God with a loud voice, falling down at Jesus feet, giving Him thanks.

When you have been so touched by the living God, being 'dignified' becomes comparatively unimportant.

Jesus asked, "Were there not ten of you? Where are the other nine?

Looking at this one man who returned to express gratitude, Jesus Christ says, "Rise and go. Your faith has made you whole."

He was not just healed. He was made whole. It was as if he had never had leprosy. On his body there would be no remaining marks, scars, or any other painful reminders.

Jesus does not just want to deal with a specific problem or trouble. His desire is to make men whole. What more does a man require?

The Stages of Anorexia

Anorexia nervosa is one of the most prevalent and dangerous eating disorders known to man. It is known to many in that it is characterized by the sufferer refusing to eat and losing extreme amounts of weight until they often resemble nothing more than a skin covered skeleton which can often lead to death in the most severe cases.

The stages of anorexia can be different for different people but they all follow a similar pattern in that the symptoms and effects worsened as time progresses. Anorexia nervosa is a treatable disorder, but there is no known specific cure. It is important to note the different stages listed below and their characteristics so that you can begin to identify if you or someone you know is suffering from this condition. In either case, seek treatment immediately so that the condition does not worsen.

Stage One of anorexia may simply resemble someone deciding to take part in a rigorous exercise program. They may exercise every day but simply appear as a fitness conscious individual.

Stage Two occurs when the individual begins obsessing not only about exercise, but food as well. This can be constantly talking about what they had to eat or how long it’s been since they had their last meal.

Stage Three is often characterized by the sufferer obsessing about trying to eat the fewest calories possible in order to still have energy to exercise and lose additional weight. This may be weeks or months and actually having the disorder and physical characteristics such as looking gaunt or pale or having circles below the eyes may exist.

Stage Four may be recognized as the person begins obsessing about their appearance in the mirror in a very public way. This may be pulling up their shirt to see how many of the ribs they can visibly count, or looking at their back to see if their spine or other bones are showing. Many people work to keep this condition private so friends and family may never witnessed this personally.

Stage Five shows just how much of a downward spiral can occur because of this harmful disorder. As anorexia progresses, one of the symptoms is that the sufferer will begin to gauge how many days they can go without eating before they faint. At this stage, fainting is common. Friends and family should certainly take notice and begin to seek treatment for this individual immediately. At this stage, the disorder has truly taken hold and the ones suffering may be completely helpless to do anything about it.

Stage Six and beyond simply sees the downward spiral continue, often at a rapid pace. Fainting spells, bloody noses, incredibly thin physiques, and extreme lack of energy are common characteristics of later stage anorexia.

Please keep in mind that the above stages are guidelines and indicative of many, but not all sufferers of anorexia. The most important thing to look for is long-term weight loss coupled with obsessive behaviors about exercise and food. It is extremely important that if you think you or someone you love may be suffering, seek treatment immediately. Anorexia kills, don’t let this happen to you or anyone you know.

What Are the Different Types of Wounds Responsible for Causing Tetanus?

Beside roadside injuries, tetanus may occur from various wounds caused by cuts, especially while working in fields / gardens, or when a deep punctured wound occurs in the case of mechanics engaged in various factories / workshops, etc. Tetanus may also manifest itself in patients with bed sores, or wounds caused by splints, or in cases of burns, skin ulcers or, following tooth extraction. It may be due to gunshot wound as well. A simple pinprick, injury by nail, thorn may also cause this problem. Fishermen may also suffer from it when they get an injury while handling the fish-hook. Frost-bite can also prove dangerous in some cases.

Tetanus may appear when injections or intravenous drips are given without proper sterilization. It is usually seen when drug addicts do not use properly sterilized needles / syringes.

The disease is known to occur when the wound is a tiny one, which can hardly be seen and is completely forgotten / healed. In such cases, the patient did suffer from an injury sometimes or the other.

Sometimes tetanus breaks out even in the wards of hospitals. It happens when the various materials used are not quite sterilized. As already mentioned, tetanus spores are highly resistant in nature, and require very high temperature for sterilization / autoclaving. Boiling. for at least 4-5 hours is required to eliminate these spores. In operation cases, tetanus spores get free from the unsterilized material, eg cat-gut, gauze, cotton, etc., the wounds caused by the operation serve as the ports of entry for tetanus spores, and their further germination into vegetative forms, which are responsible for the secretion of the toxin.

A pregnant woman may also become the victim of tetanus by a wound caused during labor / child-birth. It usually occurs when the woman has not been properly vaccinated against tetanus during her period of pregnancy.

Newborn babies may become infected, as a result of tetanus, when the cut ends of their umbilical cords, or any other injuries, they have suffered during their birth, have not been properly treated, with the result that such wound / s get infected by tetanus spores.

Tetanus may also develop in cases of ear discharge (otitis media), when the tetanus spores which may be present in the discharge of the ear, gain entry into the body through perforation / s in the ear-drum of these patients. Such cases are called 'otogenic tetanus'. This is of great importance, because such cases usually remain ignored till they get tetanus. This calls for energetic treatment of the continuing disease of the ear, as well as urgent vaccination against tetanus usually, these cases have not been vaccinated for tetanus earlier. Cases of otogenic tetanus are not uncommon. The author discussed such cases in one of the issues of Current Medical Practice. The disease is more common among children, and the parents should have the requisite awareness about this disease.

There are two significant characteristics of antibodies that we can exploit in the treatment of disease. One is that antibodies are totally specific. For example if we contract an infection such as rubella we will produce an antibody specifically targeted to the rubella virus. The second character is that antibodies remain in our bodies after an infection has been cleared thereby conferring protection into the future against that disease.

It is these characteristics that have led to the development of vaccine technology. Pharmaceutical companies take pathological organizations and treat them so that they can not cause infection. These inactive organisms make up the main component of a vaccine. When a vaccine is administered our immune system recognizes the antigen, antibody is produced and we become immune to future infection.

The cells which produce antibodies are B lymphocytes, which are white blood cells. Scientists can isolate and clone B lymphocytes to produce antibodies in laboratory conditions. These antibodies can then be used to treat infection or cancer. The antibodies produced will be either polyclonal or monoclonal. Polyclonal antibodies are produced from several cell lines. Monoclonal antibodies are produced from just one cell line. To produce a monoclonal antibody a B Lymphocyte is fused with a tumor cell. The fused cell is known as a hybridoma and it has the capability of reproducing endlessly. This technology allows scientists to create unlimited and large quantities of very specific antibody which can be used to treat disease very effectively. One of the major advantages of the use of monoclonal antibodies is its absolute specificity. It targets a cancer cell directly with with very few side effects for the patient.

Antibodies are already being used to tackle diseases such as lymphoma and breast cancer. Up to now there has been no successful antibody therapy for prostate cancer. Dr Greenes research team has produced an antibody called F77 which looks very promising. Despite the research being at a very early stage, it raises the prospect of an effective treatment for advanced prostate cancer for the first time.
