Edible plants belonging to the cruciferous family, such as broccoli and cauliflower are beneficial in helping support liver detoxification pathways. The inclusion of these and other vegetables on a daily basis will go a long way towards helping support the liver naturally. Making soups and salads as well as raw vegetable juicing all represent ways of including vegetables in the diet on a daily basis.

For severe psoriasis sufferers the avoidance of meat and meat products as well as the inclusion of a liver tonic such as Milk thistle should be considered. This, however, should only be done under supervision of a medical practitioner or nutritional therapist.

2) Low Glutathione Peroxidase

Glutathione peroxidise is an antioxidant which is generally low in psoriasis sufferers. Levels of this antioxidant can be normalised by introducing more of the mineral selenium into the diet. Some of the most abundantly rich sources of selenium include the following foods:

  • Brazil nuts
  • Fish (particularly, tuna, mackerel, cod)
  • Most seafood (particularly oysters)
  • Turkey

Studies carried out by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that as much as two Brazil nuts daily was enough to raise plasma levels of selenium by 64% and plasma levels of Glutathione Peroxidase by 8%.

Although some people may benefit from taking a supplement this should always be carried out under strict supervision of either a medical practitioner or a nutritional therapist as too much Selenium can cause toxicity.

Seasonal factors are also implicated in levels of Glutathione Peroxidise, with a positive correlation between sunlight and higher levels of this enzyme. So being outdoors as much as possible will benefit levels of GP.

3) Low Serum Vitamin D Levels

Vitamin D is manufactured in the skin in the presence of sunlight. Many psoriatic sufferers report an improvement in their lesions following exposure to sun. In as much as is safely possible, the skin of psoriasis sufferers should be exposed on a regular basis to sunlight in order to help improve the appearance of the lesions.

The inclusion of foods containing high levels of vitamin D may also be of benefit: salmon, shrimp, cod and eggs.

4) Stress

39% of psoriatic sufferers report onset of symptoms within one month of a specific stressful event. Most sufferers also tend to note a direct correlation between a worsening of their plaques in the form of inflammation when they are stressed.

In conjunction with diet, finding ways of dealing with stress will be important in the outcome of how psoriasis develops.

Toenail Fungus Treatment – Home Remedies That Work

Toenail fungus (Onychomycosis) is becoming very common throughout the world. Millions of people suffer from this fungus and thousands develop it each year.

Toenails become infected with fungus in a variety of ways. Usually it is developed because of excess moisture around the toes. This explains why toenails get infected much more frequently than fingernails.

Common ways people develop toenail fungus is by walking around barefoot in a locker room, public shower, or pool area. The chances of catching a fungus can be greatly reduced by wearing sandals in these areas.

A break in the nail helping the fungus to enter could be a cause. This includes cutting your toenails too short causing a minor cut. This can lead to a fungus infection.

Wearing wet and sweaty athletic shoes can also cause toenail fungus. Make sure your shoes are dry before putting them on. In addition wear water absorbent socks to reduce your chances of catching a fungus.

Indications of toenail fungus include:

– A bad smell coming from under the toenail.

-If the nail gets flaky or extremely brittle usually this is a sign of early stages of toenail infection.

-If you feel a stinging pain at any point on your toe.

-If the nail starts fogging up or developing a black, brown, or yellow spot or spots.

Treating toenail infections early is important. The longer you wait the worse the case becomes and will become harder to treat.

Prescription drugs can be a remedy in treating toenail infection. This method is a rather extreme one. These drugs are very expensive and treatment will take months. These pills also have strong toxics in them that can cause liver disease or failure. In one case study it indicated that .5% of people develop liver disease from taking these medications.

Homemade remedies for the treatment of toenail fungus will sometimes prove to be effective in eliminating the fungus.

Tee tree oil is a plant extract that acts as a fungus killer. Rub the toenail with this twice a day. Make sure you do not miss treatment. I’ve experienced moderate success with this in combination with other treatments.

Listerine is a mouthwash that can be found in any grocery or drug store. It is recommended that toenails be soaked for up to 30 minutes two or three times a day. This didn’t work for me but maybe it will work for you.

Vick’s Vapor Rub is a common way to try and treat toenail fungus. It’s been recommended to me several times. However I’ve had absolutely no luck with this treatment method.

Make sure when you treat foot fungus you avoid getting it back. Take preventative measures to the causes mentioned above.

Cockroach Allergy

Cockroach allergy problems can play a significant role in people with asthma.

People with a sensitivity to cockroaches often develop a rash if one of these insects crawls over their skin.

Direct contact with these insects is not generally the main problem.

Cockroach infestations cause a high level of feces and body parts from dead insects, as well as saliva. Long term exposure can eventually cause some people to become sensitive to cockroach contamination, causing an allergy.

This is a similar problem to dust mite allergies, the main difference being that cockroaches are physically bigger (and more discussing) than dust mites.

This is particularly a problem with inner-city children who are more likely to live in an infested home. Many hospital visits dealing with an asthma attack can be attributed to cockroach allergens.

In some areas, most homes have a cockroach problem. A house can harbor thousands or even hundred’s of thousands of insects, generating a very large amount of air-bourn allergens within the home.

If you see just a single insect, you can be almost certain that it represents hundreds or thousands of others, hidden in cupboards, in walls, under the sink, behind the fridge etc.

The insects or their eggs can hitch a ride into your home with groceries, second hand furniture and other items brought into the home. In some areas they may simply crawl in from the outside.

Apartment buildings are worse, since once one unit gets infested, the insects can easily find their way into other units.

The best way to deal with a cockroach allergy is to get rid of the insects. Hire a professional pest control company, and if possible, stay out of the house for several days to minimize your exposure to the toxic chemicals used to exterminate cockroaches.

Manage Irritability After Quitting Smoking

Whether you are still in the habit of smoking or have quit smoking entirely you still may experience urges, otherwise known as cravings, to smoke. If you are still in the habit, satisfying this urge to smoke is easy, all you have to do is smoke a cigarette. On the other hand, if you have quit smoking, getting through the urge to smoke may prove to be a bit more challenging.

As an ex-smoker I realized I smoked for many reasons. One of the most obvious was the fact that I was addicted to nicotine. Good old nicotine, it’s said that one pure drop of nicotine can kill a person. Not only is nicotine considered to be a poison, but nicotine is also thought to be as addictive as heroin. Unfortunately, I had no idea of how addictive nicotine was until it was too late.

After I quit smoking, it was difficult, but not impossible, to manage the urges to smoke. Suffering from nicotine withdrawal was very uncomfortable and I did not like the way it made me feel. The urge to smoke was quite strong at times and I often felt like I was not going to make it. Then to my surprise, I discovered that if I resisted the urge it would go away. All I had to do was not smoke and find ways to not think about smoking. That sure sounds simple, but for those that have quit smoking or at least tried to quit it isn’t always so. When managing urges to smoke the most common nicotine withdrawal symptom I encountered was irritability, lots of irritability.

As uncomfortable as it would be at times, to not smoke, due to the irritability associated with nicotine withdrawal, I was able to find methods to lessen its affects and get through the day. Going for a short walk around the block seemed to work the best. While I would walk I would practice taking slow deep breaths, kind of how I used to do when I smoked a cigarette. If I was unable to get out for a walk, I found that by doing some quick stretches, in my office or wherever I was, worked pretty well to relieve my irritability. I think the key to managing irritability while you quit smoking is to find ways to relax and to rid yourself of those thoughts that are begging you to have a cigarette.

There are many different nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Irritability was the main nicotine withdrawal symptom I encountered. Of course there were others but I struggled the most with managing irritability while I quit smoking. I believe the type of nicotine withdrawal symptoms and the intensity depends much on the individual and the method used to quit smoking. The urge to smoke after quitting will come, and yes, it will go. The urge to smoke should get less and less the longer you sustain from smoking a cigarette. I have been able to quit smoking and stay quit for some time now. Sure it has been difficult and uncomfortable at times but I can gladly say I am smoke free and as each new day passes without smoking I am able to manage irritability better.

What Causes Depression, Stress and Anxiety?

Depression, stress and anxiety causes are numerous, possibly more numerous than at any other time in the past. The mood disorders are sometimes described as modern illnesses. There have always been some cases of psychological disorders, but the widespread incidence of the mood disorders is a relatively new phenomena.

Understanding the causes of the disorders has been a goal of modern science. While some aspects of brain function are not completely understood, there are some things that we do know. Here are the known and suspected causes.

Illness

Heart disease, thyroid disorders, cancer, stroke and Alzheimer’s are among the illnesses that can lead to depression and other mood disorders. It is easy to understand why a chronic illness would cause a person to become depressed.

Drugs

Medications used to treat heart disease; high blood pressure and high cholesterol are among the drugs that can contribute to either a depressed state or a state of anxiety. Prescription and over-the-counter sleeping pills are depressants, as are tranquilizers and alcohol.

Although not always thought of as a drug, caffeine is one of the common stress and anxiety causes. Anyone suffering from nervousness or excessive anxiousness should limit their intake of caffeine or cut it out completely.

Recreational drugs can also cause mood disorders, because of the effects they have on brain chemicals, also known as neurotransmitters. Cigarette smoke contains nicotine and other chemicals that affect neurotransmitter function.

Finally, anti-depressant and anti-anxiety drugs can sometimes cause increased depression and/or anxiety. New warnings are required on some packaging to call attention to those risks.

Life Changes

Losing a job, getting divorced, money problems and loss of a loved one can cause a person to become depressed. Sometimes, the depressive mood resolves after a while, sometimes not.

Moving, changing jobs, pressure at work and even happy things like taking a vacation, getting married or having a baby are among the stress and anxiety causes. In some cases, it is an accumulation of small irritations that lead to anxiety disorders, irrational fears and feelings of being out of control. The irritation may come from toxins in the environment.

Exposure to Toxins

We live in a pretty toxic environment. There is pollution in the air and water. Toxins are accidentally a purposely deposited in foodstuff. Cosmetics, personal care products, household cleansers, bug spray, weed killer, air fresheners and dozens of other items in your home contain toxins.

The safety of each of those products has been determined by assuming a person would only be exposed to one. You may be exposed to hundreds of different toxins every day.

Artificial fragrances are among the most irritating and they are known to contribute to depression and nervousness. Many of the chemicals in our environment are toxic to the central nervous system, the mood control center.

Nutritional Deficiencies and Imbalances

Nutritional deficiencies and imbalances are depression, stress and anxiety causes. In every nutritional deficiency, mood changes and disorders are among the symptoms. Fatigue is another symptom and is often a major complaint among depressed and stressed out individuals.

Nutritional deficiencies in developed countries were believed to be rare until doctors starting doing more testing. Today, vitamin D deficiencies are a common problem and that is just one example.

Soil depletion caused by factory farming has lead to nutrient depletion. It is harder to get all of the nutrients you need every day from the foods that you eat, because fruits and vegetables simply are not as nutritious as they once were.

Many of the foods you eat may be over-processed or over-cooked. Cooking reduces the nutritional value of most foods. In processing, many nutrients are removed. For example, processed grains used in white flour and similar products contain none of the wholesome bran and very little of the essential fiber.

Depending on your food tastes, you may not be getting enough of certain nutrients that are essential for normal brain function. You’ll learn more about those nutrients in my next article.
