Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that usually affects the lungs. However, it can hit other organs in a person’s body. Are the kidneys one of these? A new drug has been FDA approved for hair loss. Actually it was a drug used for another purpose and already on the market. The drug is called Lumigan and is going to be marketed as Latisse. Over time it was accidentally discovered that it could grow hair. How could this happen? The drug was being used for glaucoma and has been used for several years by glaucoma patients. When the drops were applied in the eye they would leak out of the side of the eye.

This exposure to the medicine on the face caused hair to grow at the side of the eyes. So the drug maker, Allergan decided to first offer this drug for increasing the length, thickness and darkness of eyelashes.

It’s now being marketed and sold for that purpose with the new name of Latisse while the drug is still also being marketed for glaucoma. Now this is for eyelashes.

They’re working on the hair loss drug now and may possibly come to the market with it by the time you read this article if there are no glitches. They will probably change the name from Latisse but the chemical name will still be based on Lumigan and it will be more potent than the version of Lumigan for eyelashes. Because it is an established drug it will not have to go through as many rigid procedures in order to get it approved for this use. If they didn’t change the potency you could use it right now for hair loss.

At this writing they plan to offer the hair loss drug as a hair loss cure or a baldness cure calling it a miracle hair loss drug and sell it for about $120 per month. There is no report on whether one would have to continue using it to avoid baldness, but that may be the case. If so that would make it a very expensive option each month. Also needless to say this drug will have side effects and risks as do all hair loss drugs, hair loss medicines and medications.

Some of the side effects of Latisse for eyelashes are: itching skin or itching sensation, redness of the eyes, eyelid skin darkening, and actually darkening of the color of the eyes. So for a more potent version of Latisse or Lumigan there may be more side effects. And there may be so much risk and danger that they may not be able to market or continue marketing the drug for hair loss.

In the meantime you don’t want to go out and get the glaucoma drug and rub it on because that wouldn’t be potent enough to grow hair or reverse baldness or cure alopecia arreata.

There are many alternatives to growing hair naturally, that is, if it’s possible and there are many things we don’t know that can change the hair loss picture in the future. One can continue to try natural hair loss medicines that won’t hurt the body and many people have reported results but it’s an individual thing and may require work and patience to find the hair loss solutions for you. What is pleurisy and how is it treated?

Pleurisy is a pleural inflammation that has two types. Dry pleurisy is the most common type where the fluid content between the two pleural layers permit the layers to rub against each other, causing pain and discomfort. In wet pleurisy, the fluid between the layers can increase in amount. Wet pleurisy is painful for the excess fluid can compress the lungs.

Treatment of the pleurisy is directed both on the pain and the cause. Antibiotics can be given along with pain medications to help bring relief if the infection is caused by bacteria. Viral infections are usually self-limiting and require no treatment. NSAID’s are given to help lessen the inflammation and ease the pain. Ibuprofen, Advil, or Naprosyn are usually prescribed. If these medications do not work, the cortisone or corticosteroid drugs are given to lessen the inflammation of the pleura. Rest is also necessary to help you recover from your condition. If there is excessive fluid in the thorax that is causing pain, your doctor may prescribe thoracentesis. This is aspiration of the fluid found in the chest to help lessen the compression and the pain. Other times, though, the removal of fluid may increase the pain in pleurisy, further requiring stronger pain medications. Others find splinting as a good remedy for pain relief. You can hug two pillows tightly whenever you cough. If this is not working, an elastic bandage wrapped around your chest will also help lessen the pain.

Chest Infection Antibiotics

The public are now generally aware that antibiotics will only help with bacterial infections. Most chest infections of the upper respiratory system are caused by a virus of which there are over 150 strains.

Although antibiotics were used extensively in the past for a chest infection, they are not normally recommended as they can do more harm than good, as there is now increasing concerns with the side effects of chemical medicine. Chest infection antibiotics will normally only be considered if you are aged and have a temperature over 38 (100F), or any other condition such as Asthma or a long term condition of the lungs, you are a smoker with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and if your immune system is compromised as a result of Cancer treatment chemotherapy, or you have diabetes or pleurisy which is the inflammation of the lining of the lungs.

PNEUMONIA

The greatest benefit of antibiotics seemed to be for reducing the risk of pneumonia after a chest infection, particularly in the elderly. This conclusion was as a result of research by I. Peterson and colleagues of The Centre for Infectious Disease and Epidemiology, Department of Primary Care and Population Sciences, University College, London. They found that the greatest benefit of administering antibiotics for pneumonia reduced the risk after a chest infection. The size of this risk increased with the age of the patients. In the over 65 groups, 403 patients per 1000 were at risk of pneumonia, if a chest infection was untreated .This was reduced to 146 per 1000 if treated with antibiotics. Just 39 patients over 65 years would need to be treated with antibiotics to prevent one case of pneumonia compared to 119 patients between the ages of 1 and 64 year.

Their studies taken from records between 1991 and 2001 concluded that antibiotics should only be prescribed in more serious cases of chest infections.

Acute Bronchitis Antibiotics – 4 Reasons You Must Use Them

In America alone, a number of cases of URIs, otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngitis, and acute bronchitis are diagnosed every year. Accordingly, a number of prescriptions are written to cure these disorders. According to studies conducted on the subject, around 70 percent of children and adults receive unnecessary antibiotics to treat acute bronchitis every year. In spite of an abundance of literature recommending the non-use of antibiotics to treat acute bronchitis, clinical studies reveal records of physicians prescribing antibiotics to treat acute bronchitis.

1. If cough persists, patients might have to use antibiotics to treat acute bronchitis. Only a fraction of patients suffering from viral bronchitis develop long-lasting cough. Antibiotics can be used even if the use of bronchodilators for 48 hours does not cause any relief. Bacteria causing persistent cough are mycoplasm pneumoniae, chlamydia pneumoniae, and bordetella pertussis. All three are easily destroyed by antibiotics such as macrolide. Azithromycin is usually prescribed because it has fewer side effects than erythromycin. You will have to take a five-day course of azithromycin, which will cost you $38.

2. If the symptoms of bronchitis is aggravating, the patients must be re-examined to determine if there is any bacterial infection. Usually, acute bronchitis is virus-caused and it disappears after a week. However, if you are getting worse instead of better, you need to consult your doctor at once.

3. Patients with cystic fibrosis are usually infected by staphylococcus aureus, also known as gram negative bacteria, and therefore, require antibiotics. COPD patients often require antibiotic therapy to treat streptococcus pneumoniae and haemophilus influenzae.

4. An outbreak of viral influenza can complicate the treatment of acute bronchitis. It is during the flue season that adults usually suffer from bacterial complications. If your condition gets worse instead of disappearing after 7-10 days, you will have to use antibiotics to treat acute bronchitis.

Other than these four exceptions, on no other account should antibiotics be prescribed to treat acute bronchitis.

How Do I Know If My Broken Bone is Healed?

When a bone breaks, it bleeds. Your bones contain thousands of blood vessels that supply the cells inside. Clotted blood pools into a glob (how’s that for a medical term?) that surrounds the broken ends of the bone.

That clotted blood is good and normal – the cells and proteins inside it provide a type of scaffold that allows cells to know where to grow.

The cells form strands of new bone that interlink and grow into a hard, solid mass across and around the fracture site. This process of going from clotted blood to solid bone takes about six weeks in most situations.

As the break heals, the pain from the fracture will decrease and become less painful. When you touch the fractured area, the pain will lessen as the fracture gets more solid.

So, one way to tell if the broken bone is healed is for the doctor to examine you – if the bone doesn’t hurt when he touches it, and it’s been about six weeks since you broke it, the bone is most likely healed.

Most doctors check x-rays to see if bones are healing. The calcified blood clot around the fractured ends of the bones will show up on x-rays and is called callus. Callus is just new bone that has formed and grown across the fracture site. It’s another sign that the broken bone is healed.

For example, when a bone breaks, there is usually a space between the bones on the x-ray. This space gradually fills in with new bone as the bone heals – you can see this space get filled up with bone on x-rays taken after the fracture happens. Sometimes this new bone (callus) doesn’t show up on x-rays until right at the end, around four or five weeks.

So, a broken bone is healed after the bone stops hurting and there is some evidence of new bone formation on x-rays taken in the doctor’s office.

And the next time you wonder if your broken bone is healing, the answer is that it’s been healing since the instant you broke it!

Spastic Diplegia in Children With Cerebral Palsy

The form of cerebral palsy known as “spastic diplegia” is one of five categories of spastic CP that help indicate what parts of the body are primarily affected. In the case of diplegia, the lower extremities (legs, hips and pelvis) show spasticity abnormalities while the upper extremities function at a normal or near-normal capacity. Children born with this form of cerebral palsy exhibit near-normal cognitive development and performance, but are frequently delayed in their ability to walk. Once they are able to walk, they commonly have a pronounced scissoring gait, with legs crossing over each other in a stiff, scissor-like pattern.

Even though spastic diplegia is generally considered one of the lesser forms of cerebral palsy, people who suffer from it can expect lifelong difficulty with all voluntary and passive leg movement, as well as pain associated with muscle and joint breakdown that can lead to arthritis and tendinitis. Some forms of spastic diplegia are mild enough to result in barely noticeably abnormalities in balance and gait.

The cause of spastic diplegia, as with many forms of cerebral palsy, is from neonatal asphyxia, a sudden depravation of the oxygenated blood that passes to the fetus through the umbilical cord. This is sometimes combined with a pre-term birth. Spastic diplegia can also be the result of bladder, kidney, urinary tract, STD’s, yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis in the mother during pregnancy. These conditions can lead to infant hypoxia, which inhibits proper development of upper motor neuron function associated with movement.

Dr. William John Little’s first recorded encounter with cerebral palsy during the 1860’s is reported to have been among children displaying signs of spastic diplegia. For this reason, spastic diplegia is sometimes referred to as “Little’s Disease.” Diagnosis of spastic diplegia usually can’t be made until a child is several months or even several years old, but a child can be labeled “high risk” if they experienced birth trauma before, during or shortly after delivery. This includes prematurity of more than 3 weeks. If a child does not meet standard developmental milestones regarding movement of the legs (usually around 18 months), a preliminary diagnosis of spastic diplegia may be made. Around this time, a parent may observe a child’s legs as unusually stiff or floppy (which will gradually lead to stiffness). The cause of this is the failure of the motor neurons to properly develop muscle tone. Normal muscles function in pairs-one contracting while the companion muscle relaxes. When this function is compromised, both muscles contract simultaneously. Hypertonia is the result of too much muscle tone. Hypotonia is too little muscle tone.

Some of the indicators of spastic diplegia include:

1) Children often prefer sitting in a “W” position. Physical therapists will encourage sitting cross-legged or chair sitting.

2) Children may fail in early attempts to crawl, or begin crawling by pulling themselves forward with the use of their forearms, letting their legs drag behind.

3) Children who have failed to pull themselves to a standing position by age 2 and a half may require devices, such as braces, to assist with standing. Standing puts important stress on leg bones and joints, thus promoting healthy growth.

4) Toe walking or feet-rolling–can be improved with low profile/low impact leg braces.

5) Spastic diplegia can lead to gradual hip dislocation, a condition that promotes arthritis and pain. For this reason, regular hip x-rays and exams are needed to monitor the disease.
