Who could dispute that animals can have a positive effect on emotional well-being? With research being conducted into the field of alternative medicine on an on-going basis, more and more people are beginning to realize the cathartic effects that animals are having on individuals well-being, especially so in those patients suffering with depression.

While some people recover from depression using medications alone, there are many others, who would prefer to use a combination of alternative therapies to try to alleviate the symptoms of depression. Any dog owner will relate and agree with me when I say that it is a warm feeling when their dog can detect their sorrow and lick their tears away.

Pet Therapy can facilitate many positive changes one such example being increased socialization skills. Animals can be used as part of group therapy programs to encourage communication and increase the ability to focus. Helping to develop a person’s self-esteem and reducing their loneliness and anxiety are just some potential benefits of individual-animal therapy.

The bond between humans and animals is demonstrated every day in millions of homes around the world. It is also becoming a powerful, common mode of therapy in many facilities such as hospitals, schools and residential homes.

While it is difficult to measure and quantify the benefits of dog therapy with hard scientific fact, there is no question that the magical interaction possible between animal and human is unmistakable. Tears can be dried. Scowls transform into smiles. Silence is broken and lastly but not least importantly loneliness and isolation can be ejected from a person through mere touch and cuddles. Dogs offer their owner’s absolute and unconditional love and a level of boundless patience that no human could ever possibly give. The love of a dog is unlimited, what better form of alternative therapy could there be?

A phobia is a fear that has gotten out of control. Your fright is a natural, healthy response to threatening circumstances. Your body is very effective in keeping you out of danger when it uses this emotion. The physical effects are enough to encourage you to avoid dangerous situations.

When the natural protective emotion gets out of control, it develops into a phobia. You know you have this condition if you are constantly worried about running into your source of distress. Your feelings are irrational and overwhelming.

Phobias interfere with your ability to function normally on a regular basis. You may avoid normal situations and you obsess over the fearful experiences. The very notion of facing the source of your phobia can cause you to feel great anxiety.


Anxiety is a response that you feel when you are overwhelmed with emotion and nervousness. Anxiousness and phobic state of mind can lead to feelings of panic that seem to come out of nowhere. The anxiety and fearful responses are all encompassing, making it seemingly impossible to control.

Treatment approaches

You can use a few different psychological interventions to help stop fears before they get out of control. Even when the fearfulness develops into a phobia, there are steps you can take to work through them. Each approach can be complemented with self-hypnosis to maximize their effectiveness.

Desensitization is a great approach for dealing with phobic and frightful responses to situations, animals and objects. This systematic approach begins with you simply picturing your source of anxiety in your mind. Gradually, you are introduced to the object of fear until you can face it without feeling anxiety.

Cognitive therapy helps you retrain the way that you think about your source of distress. This approach uses your conceptual thoughts to work through your anxiety and phobic responses. Cognitive therapy is a process that takes considerable time but it does yield excellent results.

Help Stop Fears Using Self-Hypnosis

Each approach can be augmented with self-hypnosis. This complementary approach is ideal because it supports you as you try to use your conscious mind to guide you to feelings of calm and relaxation, no matter what you face. Hypnosis creates a path to the subconscious mind.

Your subconscious is the hub of automatic responses like fearful reactions to certain situations or objects. Self-hypnosis works directly with the inner workings of your mind, easing you through your recovery process. This is the perfect complement to desensitization and cognitive therapy.

Insomnia – A Chi Imbalance

Restful sleep is a sign of internal Chi balance. Sleep, like healthy eating and exercise is a vital and important part of well-being. Regularly disturbed sleep reduces your energy levels and your mental abilities, it negatively affects your moods, increases the time it takes to recover from illnesses and makes you more susceptible to anxiety and depression.

Types of Insomnia

When looking at insomnia, TCM believes that there are four main types and each one has a different cause and therefore a different treatment approach.

Dream-disturbed sleep: Do you dream constantly? Do your dreams affect the quality of your sleep? If you find that you have nightmares, then you could have a gall-bladder meridian imbalance. If you find that you can’t sleep because your mind is constantly on overdrive, then you may have a spleen meridian imbalance.

Difficulty falling asleep: Do you lie awake, tossing and turning for hours? You may have a liver meridian imbalance.

Waking up easily: Do you fall asleep easily, but then wake up and find it difficult to go back to sleep again? This may indicate a spleen imbalance.

Waking up at a specific time every night: Do you find that no matter what time you go to sleep, you wake up at the same time during the night? In TCM theory, the body’s Chi circulates through the twelve main meridians at a specific time of day and spends 2 hours in each one. Each meridian relates to an internal organ and each organ relates to specific emotions.

* 11pm – 1am: represents gallbladder imbalance

* 1am – 3am: represents liver imbalance

* 3am – 5am: represents lung imbalance

* 5am – 7am: represents large intestine imbalance

Causes of Insomnia

From a TCM perspective, insomnia originates as a disharmony of the heart meridian and the Shen. The Shen (a type of Chi) can be thought of as your spirit or psych while the heart is responsible for ‘housing the Shen.’ A disruption in the ability of the heart to hold the Shen or an aggravation of the Shen itself can lead to insomnia.

The following meridian systems and Chi imbalances can affect the ability of the heart to house the Shen or disrupt the Shen directly:

Yin/Yang Imbalance

Insufficient tranquility (deficient Yin energy) or excess stimulation (excess Yang energy) can aggravate the Shen. This yin/yang imbalance can be addressed by increasing Yin energy through meditation, ChiYo, breathing exercises or listening to relaxing music and decreasing Yang energy through avoiding excess mental stimulation especially before sleeping.

Spleen Meridian Imbalance

Overwork, physical or mental exhaustion, excessive worry and over-thinking, irregular diet, excessive intake of cold and raw food can all damage your spleen Chi. As the spleen is responsible for blood production, if the spleen is weak it the heart and Shen.

Kidney Meridian Imbalance

The kidneys, like all the body’s organs, store energy. When the kidney’s ability to store energy is compromised, by anxiety and fear, traumatic experiences, ageing, major illnesses, the cold and overworking, and it’s Yin energy is depleted, it will not be able to nourish or support the heart, so the Shen cannot rest.

Liver Meridian Imbalance

Anxiety, anger, irritability, frustration, resentment, repressed emotions, excessive stress, fatty foods and alcohol impair the normal functions of the liver meridian, resulting in liver Chi stagnation. This liver Chi stagnation results in reduced blood flow to the heart, reducing the ability of the heart to house the Shen. Overtime, this stagnation causes heat which rises up and disrupts the heart and the Shen.

Stomach Meridian Imbalance

Overindulgence in greasy or sweet foods can result in the retention of fluids and phlegm in the stomach, causing heat which disrupts the Shen.

There are various over the counter preparations available to use to harden the skin and in the process, shrink the tissues surrounding the nail so that it grows normally. If required, you may wear a soft, foam toecap to protect the ingrown nail till it heals.

While it is possible to take care of ingrown toenails on your own, if the pain gets severe, it is better to approach your doctor who will be able to take the necessary steps to provide relief and to avoid complications. Control Your Swelling

You may have heard of R.I.C.E. – Rest, ice, compression, elevation. These principles are the first and most important part of treating your ankle sprain. With R.I.C.E. you can effectively control the swelling that occurs after an ankle sprain, and literally cut your recovery time in half.

The most important part of R.I.C.E. is the compression. It is the most effective way to treat your swelling. Ice alone will not prevent excessive swelling. Elevation and rest alone will not prevent swelling. Only compression can work to eliminate excessive swelling around your ankle. This is the key to getting your recovery started right.

To control swelling, use an elastic wrap and horseshoe pad around the ankle. Apply the wrap all the way down to your toes and half way up your calf. Keep it on all the time for the first 7-10 days after your sprain.

Forget About ‘No Pain, No Gain’

When it comes to healing, pain is the indicator that you are over stressing the tissue. That means that when you are recovering from your ankle sprain, you should avoid activities that cause pain. So, if walking is very painful – use crutches. It isn’t a matter of just walking it off. Rest is important during the first 1-3 days after your injury. This is when your body works to control internal bleeding and to start forming the scar matrix to heal the ligament. Balance exercises are one area of ankle sprain recovery that many people overlook…and they are possibly the most important part of any recovery program. In order for your ankle to be stable, the muscles and joints all have to work together efficiently. After an ankle sprain the communication between the muscles and joints is disrupted. Balance exercises are the most effective way to restore that communication and improve the efficiency of the muscles.

A simple single leg balance, where you stand on your injured leg only for a short period of time, is a great exercise to start with. Try balancing for 30 seconds without touching down. Once that becomes easy, you can progress your balancing by turning your head from side to side while you balance, or try rotating your arms and trunk side to side. You can also try to balance on a cushion or pillow – this will make balancing much more challenging.

Post Surgery Massage Therapy

My goal in writing this article is to educate the public, but most principally medical students and physicians and surgeons to the need to inform post-surgery patients of the benefits of massage therapy in reducing contractures, relaxing muscles which have become tight and guarding due to the trauma of the surgery and the displacement by surgical tools, and the laying down of collagen substructures which cause scar tissues around the incision and surrounding tissues. There is always enormous swelling and reduced flexibility and stiffness following surgery. The incision site and the underlying adhesions to muscle tissue and fascia because of tension, displacement, and cutting/suturing create scar tissue. It is vital that that incision site and joints be massaged after 7 days of healing. Of course pressure and intensity of massage will be light at first and will increase as time goes on helping to reduce swelling, redness, and pain.

I encounter many clients who are post-surgery and who have never received any instruction by their general physicians or surgeons to seek massage therapy as an integral and necessary part of their post-surgery treatment. I don’t know whether this information is not made available at universities or whether the consequences of neglecting to inform patients is not fully appreciated.

The result is that the post-surgery population is suffering needlessly in pain for months and years because of untreated contractures, muscle adhesions, guarding muscles and scar tissues and its resulting consequences of reduced range of motion. Therapeutic massage has been scientifically proven to assist in solving these type of post-surgery issues.

I have achieved tremendous reductions in pain and noticeable and measurable improvements in tissue texture suppleness, and increased range of motion from the application of repeated therapeutic massage treatments for a range of surgery patients. The clients which have benefited from these treatments include shoulder rotator-cuff surgeries, breast reconstruction post-mastectomy, knee re-construction, hip replacement, and bi-femoral bypass affecting the groin and abdominal regions.

How to Increase Pancreas Function

If average individuals would be asked where their pancreas is located or the function of the pancreas, many of them would scratch their head. You might hear the vague answer “It is somewhere inside the stomach”, “pancreas causes diabetes”, “pancreatic cancer is an awful disease” and so on.

The pancreas is a vital organ for our body. People can survive without the stomach, small intestine and colon but not long without the pancreas. Life depends on this small gland, deeply hidden inside the abdomen cavity. The pancreas is an organ with dual tasks. Most individuals are only aware about the role of the pancreas in sugar metabolism and that pancreas produces insulin, the vital hormone to prevent diabetes.

The second function of the pancreas is producing digestive enzymes – powerful proteins that split food we eat into particles small enough to travel through the intestinal wall so that we can digest and assimilate this food.

Only by using our pancreatic digestive enzymes, we can transform our food into the energy and make our own cells. Without pancreatic digestive enzymes we could not live. What is happened if pancreas produces low amount or not good quality of digestive enzymes?

Our digestive system is long muscular tube, stretching from the mouth to the anus.
