Thrush can also cause more colic-type symptoms as well. The yeast candida albicans is usually responsible for the thrush on your baby’s tongue. Yeast loves the warm, moist, sugar-rich environment of babies mouths. If your baby is breastfed, the yeast can thrive on the natural lactose content of breastmilk; in formula there are added sweeteners as well.

However, all babies’ mouths have these sugars present – so why do some babies get thrush and not others? There are a number of factors that can be involved, but one of the most common is the extremely prevalent use of antibiotics in child labor. Between c-sections and strep-B prophylaxis, antibiotic use is more common than ever before. Hepatitis Treatment

In order to find the best hepatitis treatment it is important to mention that different viruses affect the liver in different ways. To understand how the virus is transmitted we have to mention first how the liver works. The liver is the largest organ in the body that weights about 3 pounds, and is the central area for many body functions. It is located in the upper right side of the abdomen under the cover of the ribs and is made up of many hexagonal structures called liver lobules.

The liver produces the bile that breaks down fat in foods and receives blood from two sources: from the portal vein, which comes from the intestine loaded with nutrients for the liver to process; and one-third from the hepatic artery.

The liver converts food into energy; stores nutrients, fat and vitamins; makes proteins for blood plasma; and detoxifies the body. The liver is the organ that breaks down cholesterol into bile acid, secrets it in bile, and removes it from the body. It makes bile from water, electrolytes as sodium, potassium, chloride, proteins, organic salts, such as bilirubin and lipids. The bile helps absorb fat and vitamins that are dissolved in fat. If too much cholesterol is produced in the blood vessels the condition is called atherosclerosis. If it increases in the bile it may produce gallstones.

The bile is required for the absorption of fat soluble vitamins into the body, because these vitamins are relatively insoluble in water. Bile dissolves these vitamins so they may be properly absorbed.

The liver work as chemical factory, when the liver receives nutrients from the intestines, it metabolizes, stores, and send the nutrients to other organs. The liver metabolizes carbohydrates, proteins and fat for energy, assimilate and store vitamins, manufacture bile to aid in digestion and absorption of fats; and filter and destroy toxins.

The liver contains cells organized in hexagonal lobules and contains a large amount of glycogen, which is an energy storage chemical made from glucose. The liver converts much of the glucose to a storage molecule called Glycogen. This molecule can be converted again to glucose for release into the blood whenever is required. The liver in this process maintain a relatively constant concentration of glucose in the blood.

The liver at the same time is one of the major lymphoid organs of the immune system. Different types of immune cells are found in the liver: lymphocytes, plasma cells, macrophages, fibroblasts, dendritic cells and polymorphonuclear leucocytes. These immune cells protect against infections or toxins.

The liver cell also produces proteins, called enzymes and these include ALT (alanine aminotransferasa, AST (aspartate aminotransferasa), GGT (aspartate aminotransferasa, GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferasa) and alkaline phosphate. When the liver cells are injured, destroyed or die the enzymes escape into the blood that’s circulating through the liver. When the cells are injured liver enzymes rise in the blood.

Albumin is another protein synthesized by the liver and is secreted to maintain the volume of blood in arteries and veins. When albumin levels decrease to extremely low levels, fluid may exit the blood vessels into the surrounding tissues. This cause swelling, know as edema.

Bilirubin: When the liver fails to eliminate bilirubin from the blood, the skin and whites of the eyes turn yellow and the condition is called jaundice. Other symptoms include urine darkness, and the color of the bowel movement lightens.

The liver also manufactures many proteins that maintain normal blood clotting. When the liver is damaged these clotting factors are affected and plasma levels drops. If liver failure occurs it can produce hemorrhage requiring plasma and blood transfusions.

Hepatitis viruses are important human pathogens that affect millions of people worldwide. These viruses cause inflammation of the liver and there are different kinds of hepatitis viruses and they belong to different families and differ in their way of replication and transmission. The different types of viral hepatitis are transmitted in different ways: for example hepatitis A is transmitted through contaminated food or water, and hepatitis B and C by blood, intravenous drug use, or sexual intercourse. The Main ones that need our attention are hepatitis A, B and C.

In Hepatitis A patients can recover without any permanent damage, however in hepatitis B or C, the persons become chronic carriers producing scarring or cancer in the liver. Inflammation and damage to the liver results information of scar tissue called Fibrosis.

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that causes inflammation, injury, and scarring of the liver called cirrhosis. Chronic infected patients are at risk for cirrhosis and liver cancer.

The hepatitis B is found in blood, semen and vaginal secretions. The virus has its own DNA and is structure is very complex. Ninety percent of adults infected with hepatitis B clear the infection and maintain lifelong immunity. Rarely, a patient may develop liver failure from severe acute hepatitis B. The remaining 5 to 10 percent don’t clear the infection and they become carriers or developed chronic hepatitis and risk progression to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

There are two types of chronic infection for hepatitis B. The chronic carrier without the evidence of liver disease and the patient with chronic hepatitis B. The chronic carriers could be the ones infected from their infected mother during pregnancy and can develop liver cancer in the future, or the chronic carriers who acquired the infection in adult life and can carry the virus for more than 20 years. Today, there are about more that 350 million chronic carriers in the world and this includes about 1.25 million in the US. These carriers often remain asymptomatic for one or two decades before the onset of liver diseases.

The Chronic carrier of Hepatitis B is related to age at the time of infection. From mother to infant at the time of deliver leads to chronic infection in 75 to 85 percent of cases, however the transmission from mother to baby can be prevented by administering Immune Globulin and vaccination to the infant at the time of delivery. In these cases there is a great risk for liver cancer if the persons carry the infection for more than 20 to 30 years. Is important to stress that 95 % of persons who are infected with hepatitis B before the age of 5 becomes chronically infected because of their immature immune systems.

Hepatitis B spreads through blood inoculation such as transfusions of blood or blood products, intravenous drug use, hemodialysis, or accidental needle stick. It also spread by sexual contact, both heterosexual and homosexual, and can be easily be transmitted from mother to infant at delivery.

This condition has different stages and may divide in four phases: The first phase is infection when the virus attached to the liver cells and infects them. The second one is inflammation and the production of immune cells called lymphocytes. These Immune cells in their attempt to eliminate Hepatitis B virus release molecules that damage the liver. The Third phase is called Fibrosis and is developed as a consequence of chronic infection and inflammation. It’s important to stress that the presence of fibrosis may indicate the presence of hepatitis B for several years. The last and four stage is cirrhosis and is produced when the functions of the liver are affected due to damage in the architecture and blood flow of the liver.

Chronic hepatitis causes cirrhosis, a condition in which the normal lobular structure of the liver is destroyed. In Cirrhosis the hardening of the liver is produce for the formation of scar tissue and the formation of nodules. This nodules affects the normal structure of the liver and prevent the normal flow of blood through the liver. Scarring and distortion of the hepatocytes and connective tissue that form each hexagonal lobule can prevent the flow of blood through the liver.

When the liver becomes scarred, it creates resistance to this blood flow and the blood may return into the spleen. When this happens, the spleen becomes bigger and holds blood elements, removing them from circulation and lowering blood counts. As the liver becomes increasingly injured, scar tissue developed, making it difficult for blood from the portal vein and hepatic artery to circulate through the liver. The blood tends to back up into other abdominal vessels and spleen. As blood backs up in the spleen, the spleen enlarges and the cells become immobilize and are destroyed, resulting in a decrease in platelets, red cells, and white cells.

By the time they get to that stage, it is too late and there is very little we can do to save them. Alcoholic fatty liver:

Alcoholic fatty liver is the mildest form of liver damage from alcohol. Most patients with alcoholic fatty liver do not have any specific symptoms of the disease. It is usually discovered incidentally when doing ultrasound of the liver for another unrelated reason. The ultrasound shows deposits of fat in the liver. The diagnosis of alcoholic fatty liver is important as it gives the patient a golden opportunity to easily reverse the liver damage from alcohol at an early stage. The only treatment is to stop drinking but the good news is that it is completely reversible in most patients

Acute alcoholic hepatitis:

Acute alcoholic hepatitis is a short-term complication of liver damage from alcohol and may result from excessive drinking over a short period of time.The severity of acute alcoholic hepatitis may range from a mild abdominal discomfort to severe life threatening liver failure. Most patients have some abdominal pain and low-grade fever. Patents with more severe form of the disease have jaundice or yellow discoloration of their skin and eyes.The most severe form of the disease affects the brain and causes confusion and disorientation. A few patients with severe liver damage develop liver failure and may die from it. But most patients recover from acute alcoholic hepatitis and those who stop drinking usually have a good long-term prognosis.

Chronic compensated alcoholic cirrhosis:

Chronic compensated alcoholic cirrhosis is the result of long-term liver damage from alcohol. These patients usually have years of heavy drinking before any symptoms appear. The onset of symptoms is very slow and is mostly diagnosed at a very advanced stage. Anytime someone drinks too much alcohol, there is some damage to the liver cells. Alcohol is directly toxic to the liver. Liver cells are usually very resilient and repair themselves after the alcohol is gone. With repeated insults without enough time to repair, the repairs become less than perfect and leave behind small scars. These small scars accumulate over many years and the liver becomes scarred and fibrous. This is how cirrhosis develops in alcoholics. Patients develop back flow of fluid into their abdomen and it can swell up and resemble the belly of a pregnant woman. The veins in the chest and abdomen become prominent and pop up everywhere. Toxins build up in blood and impair brain functions. The patients have impaired memory, judgement and thinking. At this stage, the liver damage may still be reversible in some patients if they give up drinking completely. If they continue to drink, they will almost certainly die from liver failure within a few years or even a few months in some cases.

End stage cirrhosis and liver failure:

End stage cirrhosis and liver failure develop when there is further liver damage from alcohol in patients with chronic compensated alcoholic cirrhosis. The toxins in the blood continue to accumulate and patients may lose all ability to think and behave in a normal way and seem totally crazy. The popped up veins in the food pipe may burst and they may bleed to death by vomiting large amounts of blood. They may develop life threatening infections because of impaired immune system. Treatment at this stage is very difficult and only serves to prolong the life by at most a few months in most patients.

Acid reflux has forced me to suddenly wake up countless times, in a state of panic, choking on my own acid and gasping for breath.

Nothing can really describe the burning bile feeling, or the taste it leaves in your mouth as you try not to gag and throw-up. I have had to stick a pinch of toothpaste into my mouth and leave it there to try and cut the bile taste.

I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia as a teenager, which may contribute to acid reflux. The burning acid had left me alone for most of my 20’s. However, a high stress job and a subsequent gain in weight and lack of exercise brought the acid reflux back on with a vengeance in my 30’s.

When I started having almost constant waves of heartburn and acid indigestion, sitting upright at my desk, I knew it was time to see the doctor.

At that time, I had never heard of acid reflux.

He told me that more than 60 million people suffer from frequent heartburn, acid indigestion or GERD (Gastroesophogeal Reflux Disease).

Acid reflux describes the regurgitation of acid back up the throat. It can also lead to more serious medical conditions that may require hospitalization.

My doctor explained this happens when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly and stomach contents leak back, or reflux, into the esophagus. The LES is a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that acts like a valve between the esophagus and stomach. The esophagus carries food from the mouth to the stomach.

When refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn. The fluid may even be tasted in the back of the mouth, which is called acid indigestion.

Heartburn that occurs more than twice a week may be considered GERD, and it can eventually lead to more serious health problems.

When I finally went and saw my doctor, I was having almost constant heartburn and acid indigestion.

He further explained that symptoms are usually worse at night when the person is lying flat and acid flows easily from the stomach back up the esophagus.

Anyone, including infants, children, and pregnant women, can have GERD.

I was told to make some lifestyle and dietary changes. They included:

1. Using a wedge pillow to elevate my body at bedtime

2. Eating plenty of fiber and drinking lots of fluids.

3. Eating small meals and eating slowly.

4. Not lying down for at least 1-2 hours after eating.

5. Losing extra pounds. Added weight causes extra pressure on your stomach and can irritate symptoms.

6. Wearing loose clothing. Tightly fitting clothes put extra pressure on your stomach.

7. Not exercising for at least one hour after eating.

8. Avoiding the following: alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, chocolate, carbonated beverages, spices, fried and fatty foods, tomato products, citrus, and peppermint.

I am a non smoker and I don’t drink that much. I do drink a fair bit of coffee however. The real culprit for me though has been drinking fruit juice of any kind before bed. When I have, my acid reflux has been significantly worse.

As I have made many of these changes to my lifestyle, I have seen some relief.

The elevated pillow works wonderfully. I have also started taking proton pump inhibitor medication, which reduces acid production in my stomach. I have been told surgery may be an option down the road.

My doctor explained this happens when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly and stomach contents leak back, or reflux, into the esophagus. The LES is a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that acts like a valve between the esophagus and stomach. The esophagus carries food from the mouth to the stomach.

When refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn. The fluid may even be tasted in the back of the mouth, which is called acid indigestion.

Heartburn that occurs more than twice a week may be considered GERD, and it can eventually lead to more serious health problems.

When I finally went and saw my doctor, I was having almost constant heartburn and acid indigestion.

He further explained that symptoms are usually worse at night when the person is lying flat and acid flows easily from the stomach back up the esophagus.

Anyone, including infants, children, and pregnant women, can have GERD.

I was told to make some lifestyle and dietary changes. They included:

1. Using a wedge pillow to elevate my body at bedtime

2. Eating plenty of fiber and drinking lots of fluids.

3. Eating small meals and eating slowly.

4. Not lying down for at least 1-2 hours after eating.

5. Losing extra pounds. Added weight causes extra pressure on your stomach and can irritate symptoms.

6. Wearing loose clothing. Tightly fitting clothes put extra pressure on your stomach.

7. Not exercising for at least one hour after eating.

8. Avoiding the following: alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, chocolate, carbonated beverages, spices, fried and fatty foods, tomato products, citrus, and peppermint.

I am a non smoker and I don’t drink that much. I do drink a fair bit of coffee however. The real culprit for me though has been drinking fruit juice of any kind before bed. When I have, my acid reflux has been significantly worse.

As I have made many of these changes to my lifestyle, I have seen some relief.

The elevated pillow works wonderfully. I have also started taking proton pump inhibitor medication, which reduces acid production in my stomach. I have been told surgery may be an option down the road.

Congestive Heart Failure And CoQ10

Since the 1960s there have been numerous controlled clinical trials concerning the relationship between congestive heart failure and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). As its name implies CoQ10 is a coenzyme that is necessary for the proper functioning of other substances, one of the most important of which is ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is necessary for the production of cellular energy. By proxy CoQ10 is likewise essential for this process.

Clinical trials have attempted to study the relationship between CoQ10 and many chronic diseases including, but not limited to, heart disease, cancer and AIDS. But heart disease has gained the most attention; congestive heart failure being one of the primary subjects. Because heart muscle cells require so much energy to function and CoQ10 is at the core of the cellular energy process it makes sense to suspect that congestive heart failure might be linked to CoQ10 deficiency. With that theory in mind many studies like the ones that follow have been conducted. These trials have been presented in this essay in thumbnail format.

One early Japanese trial (1972) involved 197 patients with varying levels of severity of cardiac failure. The study reported significant improvement of cardiac function supplementing with 30 mg per day of CoQ10. Another Japanese study demonstrated similar results with 38 patients also supplementing with 30 mg. In 1985 a U.S. clinical study prescribed daily supplementation with 100 mg of the coenzyme for treatment periods of three months for patients with low ejection fraction measurements. The ejection fraction is the measure of the heart’s ability to pump blood. A low ejection fraction is a classic symptom of congestive heart failure. Again, significant improvements in heart function were reported. Other clinical trials followed prescribing the same level of supplementation with similar results.

Studies in the early 1990s showed improvement for patients suffering from ischemic cardiomyopathy (a low oxygen state usually due to obstruction) with supplemental levels of 200 mg per day. Supplementing with 100 mg per day demonstrated improvement for patients suffering from idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, an enlarged heart syndrome of unknown cause.

One of the largest trials of the 1990s involves 641 patients randomly divided into two groups. The first group received a placebo. The other group received CoQ10 supplements. During the one-year follow-up period 118 patients in the placebo group were hospitalized for heart failure compared to 73 in the group that received the supplements.

All of the preceding trials were relatively short-term studies. The level of improvement among patients varied depending on how long they had been suffering from some aspect of congestive heart failure. Through the years it has become increasing clear that the greatest improvements were shown in patients that had suffered from their condition the least amount of time.

In other words, the longer a person had been suffering from the disease before he or she received CoQ10 treatments the less improvement was demonstrated. People who had received treatments early in the development of the disease showed the most dramatic improvement often returning to normal heart function. Long-term sufferers received less relief and were less likely to return to full heart function. Whatever the reasons for this disparity in health improvement, it demonstrates the importance of receiving treatment as early as possible.

But what about long-term studies? Do they show the same marked improvement with similar treatment? In the short-term trials it was apparent that even high level supplementing with CoQ10 seemed to produce no ill effects. In order to determine if this is only true for short durations a number of long-term studies were conducted.

In 1990 observations were published concerning 126 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy. Unlike previously noted studies this one followed the patients’ progress for six years. Long-term benefits from CoQ10 supplementing were noticed with no harmful side effects. Similar observations were made in a trial involving 2,664 patients treated with CoQ10 at levels up to 150 mg per day.

A 1994 study involving 424 patients with a variety of myocardial (refers to the heart’s muscle mass) diseases. Among these conditions were the following: Valvular heart disease (pertaining to dysfunction of heart valves), hypertension, diastolic dysfunction (failure of the heart to properly refill itself with blood), dilated cardiomyopathy (group of disorders where the heart muscle is weakened and enlarged and cannot pump effectively) and ischemic cardiomyopathy (low oxygen state usually due to obstruction of the arterial blood supply).

Patients were treated with an average of 240 mg of CoQ10 daily during their treatment period. They were then followed-up for up to eight years with an average follow-up period of 18 months. Overall results demonstrated measurable cardiac improvements in one month with maximum improvements at about six months. With continued CoQ10 treatment the improvement in most patients was sustained. However, discontinuing the treatment usually resulted in a decline of cardiac function with eventual return to pre-treatment conditions.

As always in the medical community many more studies will need to be conducted to determine the future of CoQ10 treatment. However, the research to date seems to support CoQ10 as a viable treatment for many diseases that are caused or exacerbated by inadequate production of cellular energy.

Have You Been Diagnosed With a Leaking Mitral Valve (Mitral Valve Incompetence)

If your mitral valve does not close properly, blood may leak back into the left atrium (one of the two upper heart chambers) from the left ventricle (one of the two lower heart chambers). Often there are no symptoms, but mitral incompetence can lead to shortness of breath, fatigue, and other symptoms of congestive heart failure.

Mitral incompetence can be permanent if the valve itself is damaged, or temporary, as in some cases of rheumatic fever. But because the number of cases of rheumatic fever has declined in recent years, mitral incompetence is less common than it used to be.

If you are among the relatively few people who have mitral incompetence without mitral stenosis, however, you are less susceptible to atrial fibrillation than those who have both disorders. Infective endocarditis is a frequent complication of mitral incompetence.

Medical treatment for mitral regurgitation is much the same as for Mitral stenosis. Diuretic therapy is the cornerstone of this treatment. If the symptoms of mitral incompetence are extremely severe, your physician may advise you to have surgery in order to have the incompetent valve repaired or replaced with an artificial one. There are two possible types of mitral valve replacement, a mechanical valve or a valve formed from animal tissue. Your surgeon must decide which of these is more appropriate for your particular case.

Mechanical replacements are efficient, but they cause clotting of blood over the valve. If you have a mechanical valve replacement, you will need to take an anticoagulant drug (blood thinner) to guard against this complication. Anticoagulants are not suitable for anyone who has a disease with increased tendency to bleed such a bleeding peptic ulcer.

Tissue-graft valves involve much less risk of clotting, but they may be less durable. If, at any time after the operation, you suddenly become short of breath, faint, or dizzy, or if your urine looks abnormally dark or your chest begins to ache, see your physician as soon as possible. Any of these symptoms may indicate there is a mechanical failure of the replacement valve.

Heart Attack – What You Should Do If You Have One

Hopefully you never have to use this guide, but preparing for something this critical can be lifesaving. First and foremost, make a plan and discuss it in advance with your family, your friends, your coworkers and, of course, your doctor.

Then you can rehearse this plan, just like a fire drill. Talk about heart attack warning signs and the importance of acting fast by calling 9-1-1 within a few minutes (5 at the most) if those signs persist. Explain to them that you will be treated faster if they call 9-1-1 rather than driving you to the hospital themselves.

Keep it simple. Know the warning signs. Keep information-such as what medications you’re taking-in one place.

Act Quickly!

Call 9-1-1 immediately. Don’t ignore the pain or discomfort. If you think you are having heart problems or a heart attack, get help immediately. The longer you wait to get medical treatment, the greater the chances you will have severe, permanent damage to your heart or even die. Many treatments are most effective if given within 1 to 2 hours of when the heart attack begins. It is important to call emergency services because research shows that people who arrive at the hospital via ambulance are treated sooner than those who get there by their own means. Plus, everyone on the road makes way for an ambulance. An ambulance has trained medical staff and life-saving equipment to stabilize you if your condition worsens.

Chew an Aspirin

After calling for help, you should chew an aspirin (162 mg to 325 mg) to help prevent further clots developing. A chewed aspirin gets into the bloodstream more quickly than one swallowed whole. Enteric-coated or buffered aspirin is not absorbed as easily as regular aspirin. But if that is the only type of aspirin you have, crush the tablet before swallowing. (Don’t take the aspirin if you’re allergic to it)

Nitroglycerin

If you’ve already had a heart attack, ask your physician about having nitroglycerin available in the event of a subsequent attack. If your doctor has prescribed nitroglycerin pills, you should follow your doctor’s orders. If you are not sure about how to take your nitroglycerin when you get chest pain, check with your doctor.

Information to Have Available

Find out the location of the nearest hospital that offers 24-hour emergency cardiac care and keep the address handy. The American Heart Association recommends that doctors give a copy of the resting ECG to patients who have heart disease or who are at high-risk for a heart attack. If you have a copy of your resting ECG, give it to the emergency department doctors to help guide your treatment. Make a list of medications you are taking and/or are allergic to. This will help ensure that you receive the appropriate treatments.
