Guide to Scalp Psoriasis

What is Scalp psoriasis?

As the term suggests, scalp psoriasis is psoriasis involving the scalp. It is common and approximately half of all people with psoriasis have it on their scalp. The reason it describes a special mention is that it can be particularly difficult to treat and usually requires specifically formulated medicines.

Psoriasis in the scalp forms in the same way as in other parts of the body but the affect of the hair is to trap the scale and stop it being rubbed away as it is, for instance, with psoriasis on the elbow. The result is that the scale can quickly build up causing a thicker plaque which becomes more difficult to treat. This difficulty is compounded by the hair which also acts as a physical barrier obstruction the application of creams and ointments to the affected skin.

The net result can be stubborn thick scaly plaques which require specifically formulated scalp treatments.

What are the symptoms?

Scalp psoriasis causes redness and scaliness which may also involve the hairline, the forehead, behind the ears and the back of the neck. It can range from very mild with slight fine scaling to very severe crusted thick covering covering the entire scalp which can in some cases cause hair loss during the flare, but will normally grow back.

A correct diagnosis of scalp psoriasis is essential in treating the condition as there are other skin disorders which may look similar such as seborrhoeic dermatitis. The difference being that scalp psoriasis scales appear fine with a silvery color, whilst seborrhoeic dermatitis scales often are yellowish and greasy. One of the most frustrating symptoms is the constant shower of scale on to your collar and shoulders.

What is the treatment?

It should be stated that children can get scalp psoriasis too. Treatments will be much the same as used for adults.

There are many treatment options that can help scalp psoriasis and they all need to be used regularly. Treatments can be time consuming and it is important to select one that fits in with your lifestyle. On rare occasions scalpp psoriasis has been known to have spontaneous remissions but can also remain on the scalp for lengthy periods of time

Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Alliance

A principal source of information on psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Here is a list of topical treatments that you may find useful for scalp psoriasis:

Tar Products

Tar shampoos, gels, ointments and creams are commonly used to treat scalp psoriasis. They may be combined with other medications such as salicylic acid, to help remove scale, or coconut oil, to moisturize the skin. Tar is effective but it can stain clothing and jewelery and has a strong smell. As a result, some people dislike using it. The precaution instructions for use will depend on the formulation of the product but tar products are usually massaged into the scalp, left in contact for a period of time, and then rinsed off. Clothes and bedding can be protected from staining by wearing a shower cap during the contact period.

Topical Steroids

These scalp products are typically formulated as liquids, gels, oils, foams, sprays or shampoo. They range from mild to very strong potency. They should not be used for long periods of time. Ideally, they should be used regularly for a few weeks to bring the psoriasis under control, and then gradually phased out, giving way to maintenance with a coal tar shampoo. Abrupt stopping of steroids can result in a rebound or worsening of psoriasis. It is not advisable to use steroid preparations on your face, other areas of sensitive skin such as under the breast and genitals and around the eyes, unless directed by your doctor. Most topical steroid medications are designed specifically for treating scalp psoriasis. These formulas are usually water and alcohol based which make them easier to wash out after treatment.

You can become resistant to some topical steroids used in the treatment of scalp psoriasis. If this happens consult your doctor for alternative medicines. It should also be noted that it can take several months before such topical steroid medications will work again for skin that has become resistant.

Vitamin D Analogues

Vitamin D analogues are available in water and oil – based scalp formulas. They are usually applied once or twice a day and left in contact with the scalp. They do not smell or stain clothing, and are reliably easy to use. They can be used to bring the scalp psoriasis under control and maintain that control. Such medications should be confined to the scalp region only as it can irritate unaffected skin particularly the face. It may be advisable if you think you are pre to sensitivities to test a small patch before applying it to the entire scalp. Avoid contact with the eyes.

Vitamin A Derivative (topical retinoids)

These can be applied as creams or gels for the treatment of psoriasis and can be used in the treatment of scalp psoriasis too. These medications may be less irritating for the people with dry or sensitive skin. To avoid the drying out of skin too much and to reduce irritation, applying a moisturiser 30 minutes before these are used may help. These medications can be used on the face but should never be applied around the eye region and treated skin should not be covered.

Antimicrobial Treatment

If bacterial or yeast infections are present scalp psoriasis can become worse. A crusting scalp together with scaling and / or lymph nodes in the neck are swollen, this may indicate to your doctor that antimicrobial treatment will be necessary as there is infection present.

Mild scalp psoriasis can respond well to treatment with anti fungal shampoos that will help to reduce the yeast infection. Anti fungal shampoos may have to be used once or twice a week thereafter to maintain results.

Other things affecting the scalp

These can include scalp acne, infestations, fungal infections and alopecia. Make sure you get a correct diagnosis before starting any treatments. your doctor or healthcare provider will provide appropriate advice.

Ultra violet light

Successful outlet for using UV light treatments can be variable on the scalp because the hair blocks UV light from penetrating the scalp. It works best on shaved heads. Natural sunlight may also help again if your head is shaved or very thin. It is therefore not surprising that this is not a first line treatment.

Dithranol

Dithranol creams are effective in scalp psoriasis but like coal tar can be difficult to use. Dithranol is usually applied to the scaly plaques and left in contact for up to 30 minutes before being rinsed out. It needs to be applied with great care as it can irritate and cause purple staining of blonde or red hair. Dithranol can burn non affected skin. Lipid stabilized Dithranol (Micanol), if used correctly, can reduce staining. It should also be noted that dithranol will stain clothing and baths, showers and wash basins. Extra attention is needed.

Medicated Shampoos

There are many coal tar and non coal tar medicated shampoos for treating scalp psoriasis at your local chemist. For further advice ask your pharmacist who may be able to give you further guidance. You should also bear in mind that medicated shampoos are designed for the scalp not the hair so the use of a regular shampoo and conditioner after your scalp treatments will reduce the smell of any unpleasing medicated shampoo and leave your hair shiny and manageable.

Scalp psoriasis can get worse if it becomes infected with bacteria or yeast and sometimes medicated shampoos with antifungal medicines can be useful in reducing the plaques.

The choice of which of these treatments is best for you is a personal one. It is a good idea to shop around and try different treatment options. In this way you can discover which one suits you best.

Some Useful Tips

Scalp psoriasis may progress down onto the forehead, neck and around the ears. These areas can be rented with the same products you use for your scalp only if indicated to use on such areas. Be careful about your face. Strong steroids should not be used on the face and dithranol can stain and burn facial skin. Avoid getting medication in the eyes.

A lot of product treatments will contain salicylic acid, known as a keratolytic. This ingredient aims to loosen psoriasis scales so they can be washed away more easily. This ingredient will be contained in both OTC and prescription products mainly found in shampoos and soaps. It should be noted that treatment with high concentrations of this ingredient can cause irritation and used over large areas of skin the body may absorb it leading to the weakening of hair shafts, causing them to break and leading to temporary hair loss. Hair should return to normal after stopping the treatment. Such products may be easier to apply at night and the head covered with a shower cap to avoid messiness and more convenient as they can be time consuming at the beginning of the day before going to work.

Softening and loosing thick scale makes it easier for topical medications to penetrate plaques and clear them. Soaking the scalp in warm water can help loosen scales which can then be removed using a comb. But be gentle – do not break the skin.

Round or fine tooth combs or brushes are generally used to remove psoriasis scales. Comb the scalp gently with a light circular motion holding the comb flat against the scalp. Loosen the scale gently then you can shampoo to flush the scale from the scalp and out of the hair. A hairdresser can be used to blow additional stairs away from the scalp and the hair. Do not remove scales too fiercely as this can break the skin leading to infection. The Koebner response can occur to damaged psoriasis skin, this can also occur if you scratch or scrape your scalp roughly. If any treatments you use aggravate your psoriasis and scalp always consult your doctor. Care should be taken when removing the scales and applying topical medicines so as to avoid the Koebner response.

Never use a shower cap or other occlusion method when using prescription scalp medications other than specified by your doctor.

Scalp Itch – As stated refraining from scratching and picking of psoriatic scales will reduce infection and the Koebner response. Over the counter medicated shampoos can help in alleviating itching. Please speak to your pharmacist about this.

Combination Medications – The treatment of psoriasis should be tailor made to each person. A doctor may try various combinations of medications before finding what works for you. Good communication between you and your doctor and good compliance will ensure optimum results for you. Always be aware that when medications are combined they may activate adverse reactions. By being aware of this and consulting your doctor if you are unsure will reduce the likelihood of further discomforts.

Another alternative is to soften and loosen the scales is to use oils, lotions, creams or ointments applied to a damp scalp providing they do not cause you irritation. To add to their effectiveness a hot towel placed around the head to act as an occlusion will also help loosen and soften the scales. The heating of olive oil and application to the scalp and wrapping your head in a towel for a long period of time may also help or speed the process up applying the olive oil and then sitting under a hairdryer. Be careful not to burn the scalp with too much intense heat.

If you are pregnant or suffer from dry hair conditioners and cream rinses may help to minimize and moisturize the hair and scalp. There is no evidence to suggest the use of hair dyes, hair sprays or perms will affect your scalp, please please advise your hairdresser before embarking on any treatments so that they can apply patch tests to see if any of their products will irritate your scalp or psoriasis lesions. They may be able to use gentler products. If you have the need to use head lice shampoo preparations it is illegally you will have a reaction but they can be irritating and great care should be taken not to get the solution into open cuts or lesions or extensively scratched skin.

Hair Matters

It can be highly embarrassing for you finding or going to a new hairdresser or barber. If they are reputable and understanding they should have a knowledge of conditions such as scalp psoriasis and therefore will be able to best advise you on styles, colors and hair products. It is always worth making general enquiries of friends and relatives about local hairdressers or contacting the Hairdressers' Council for further advice that may be useful. Some hairdressers are also happy to visit your home if you would prefer not to go to a salon.

When applying scalp products part the hair and hold it in place while you drip the oil or lotion directly onto your scalp. Repeat this process until the whole of the affected area has been treated. Conditioners and cream rinses to help combat dry hair can be used after you have completed using your medication. Hair dyes and sprays do not usually irritate the scalp in scalp psoriasis. However, it may be sensible to test a cosmetic product on a small area of your scalp before committing to it.

This information has been prepared by the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Alliance and should not be used as a replacement for advice from your healthcare professionals. Always consult a doctor too. Bear in mind however, that the treatments used should never be worse than the psoriasis itself. If this is the case consult your doctor for further advice or alternative treatment options.

It is also important to realize that good patient compliance and experimentation to find an effective treatment plan that may include treatments such as topical medications and ultra violet UV light can often be combined and rotated depending on psoriasis resistance to repeated medicinal use.

With all treatments it can take at least eight weeks until you get adequate control of the plaques. Once you have achieved this it is important to maintain any improvement, and this can usually be done with regular use of a tar shampoo.

You are strongly advised to speak to your doctor or health care provider if you think you are affected by any conditions or items mentioned in this article.

Preventing Ankle Sprains – Ankle Braces (Part 4)

When all of the risk factors for spraining an ankle can not be eliminated you may want to consider some outside help to reduce the likelihood that an ankle sprain will occur. Braces have been used effectively for decades to reduce the frequency and severity of these injuries [1], [2], [3] ,. In this article some of the most common and best reviewed styles of braces will be discussed so that you can know which brace will give you the best odds.

First, you must understand that the goal of an ankle brace is to restrict excessive motion in the joint while still allowing normal ranges of movement. This is easier said than done. While there are many braces out there only a very few have any research to prove that they work. Do not be fooled into believe many manufacturer's claims that they have scientific research to prove that their design works. They base this claim off of the fact that there has been scientific research done on braces similar to their. However, you must recognize that when research is performed on a brace the materials and manufacturing are also being tested, not just the design.

Braces are made to either fit inside or outside of a person's shoe or boot. There are two basic designs of ankle bracelets available on the market: stirrups and boots. (yes, it sounds very country and western).

Stirrup braces have a heel plate or support under the foot, and straight pieces that run up the inside or outside of the ankle to the lower leg. These two side pieces are strapped together and the brace hugs the ankle joint. There are a couple variations on the design including a hinge between the bottom support and the side pieces to facilitate more normal movement as the ankle joint swings forward and back. Another variation is a full foot plate complete with arch support. Some stirrup braces will have air cushions on the side pieces for increased comfort and mobility.

Boot braces come in several designs as well from neoprene slip on braces which do little more than keep the ankle warm and add some mild compression (there is little to no evidence indicating that they prevent ankle sprains) to lace up boots with rigid side supports. Some boot style braces will be made of leather, others of nylon mesh, and others of a less restrictive and less effective material. Some will be fastened with Velcro straps or clips instead of laces.

When it comes to a comparison between these two styles of braces, the research gives a slight edge to certain stirrup braces [4]. In clinical trials they have been shown to be more effective in limiting the range of motion of the ankle joint as well as preventing more ankle sprains in real-life situations. This being said, the boot style braces are also effective for reducing the occurrence of ankle sprains.

So does this mean that you should definitely choose a stirrup brace over a boot brace? Not necessarily. Another factor to consider is the comfort of the brace. Even though stirrup braces have a little more evidence for their effectiveness, not everyone finds them comfortable to wear. This all depends on the personal preference and anatomical uniqueness of the individual wearing it. If a brace rubs or chafes the skin of the ankle joint, it is not the best option. In addition, if a person can not walk or run normally or close to it then the brace could actually leave that person more prune to injuries of the ankle or other joints. There may be a trade-off to be made when it comes to your comfort and selecting the right brace for you.

The cost of a brace makes it a particularly desirable strategy for preventing ankle sprains. A typical brace will cost between $ 30- $ 50 depending on the model and where you buy [5]. This is a one-time investment that may last a whole season of sports or more depending on how much it is used. When compared to other techniques such as taping, a brace can be a very economic and effective choice.

Alternative Treatment for Pancreas, Liver, Bile Problems

The pancreas, liver and bile can be figuratively in good or very bad relationship in the human body. In a healthy situation, they can work together, but in an unhealthy situation, they can harm one another, causing diseases. For good example, both bile and pancreas (pancreatic lipase) are responsible for proper fat digestion. For bad example, gallbladder stones or pancreatic cancer both form blockages of bile that cause huge problems for the liver and the pancreas.

To truly realize the relationship between the liver, bile and the pancreas, one needs to understand the structure and function of these organs.
The liver is our body's main chemical factory and it carries outs many very important jobs. Everything we eat and digest makes its way to the liver, and the liver uses the food supplies to produce essential nutrients for our whole body.

The liver's most important functions are manufacturing and releasing bile and removing the toxins from our body. Bile provides elimination a variety of toxic substances from the body. These substances include the products of the body's metabolism such as cholesterol and bile pigments, as well as some toxic chemicals, drugs and heavy metals.

The cells of the liver secret bile into a network of ducts. These ducts meet to form the common bile duct, which carries bile from the gallbladder and liver. The common bile duct merges with the pancreatic duct. The pancreatic duct carries the pancreatic juice with digestive enzymes from the pancreas into a small cavity (the Ampulla of Vater) that opens into the duodenum, the first section of the small intestine.

It is very important that the pressure in the pancreatic duct is always higher than the pressure in the bile duct; therefore bile can not achieve the pancreatic cells. The mixture of bile and the pancreatic juice goes through the Ampulla of Vater into the duodenum.

Around the common bile duct, pancreatic duct and the duodenum wall there is a muscle valve called the Sphinster of Oddi. The Sphinster of Oddi controls secretions from the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder into the duodenum. Spasm or blockage of this muscle valve may cause pancreatic juice to back up inside the pancreatic duct. Digestive enzymes trapped inside the pancreas start to digest their own pancreatic cells, causing congestion, inflammation, pain, cysts and finally the death of pancreatic tissue.

Hepatitis, fatty liver, Candida-yeast overgrowth, parasites, congestion, infection, infection, high body's acidity level and poor eating habits can cause the bile to be thick and acidic making it difficult to move through the ducts and valves.

When the bile becomes thick and acidic it also becomes very aggressive. This means that aggressive bile irritates and corrodes the walls of the ducts, causing a bile reflux – wrong way traffic for bile. This causes spasms of the Sphinster of Oddi and the pancreatic and common bile ducts. This is very dangerous because instead of the toxic acidic bile going to the duodenum, the toxic thick and acidic bile goes into the pancreas, which activates the pancreatic digestive enzymes inside the pancreas. Thus, pancreatitis begins.

Additionally, when the acidic, aggressive, toxic bile is pushed out into the duodenum, it erodes and irritates the gut's walls causing the duodenal ulcers. This aggressive bile causes the duodenum walls to contract in a jerky motion that pushes the bile up inside the stomach or even esophagus. This bile / pancreatic reflux may cause stomach and esophagus infection, ulcers and possibly cancer.

Good digestion in gastrointestinal tract is large depended upon proper quality and sufficient amount of bile and pancreatic juice filled with good digestive enzymes. Contrary, digestive symptoms such as belching, heartburn, nausea, constipation / diarrhea, abdominal cramps or pains, gas, bloating are sign of indigestion and may show impaired function of liver, gallbladder and pancreas.

So health of pancreas, liver and gallbladder connects with a few important things. Bile and pancreatic juices need to be liquid and alkaline.
Any kind of factors that cause dehydration negatively influence in liquidity of pancreatic juice and bile.

Harmful action of the body's acid catches the eyes of scientists and doctors more and more now. Aging and many diseases cause whole body acid or they are consequences of chronic acidosis – collection of acidic substances in the tissues. The most sufferers from whole body acid are alkaline digestive glands such as liver and pancreas.

Acidity is getting epidemic in modern society today due to abundance of the processed, acid-forming foods: meats, sugars, white flour, white rice, sodas, etc. Alcohol is very acidic and toxic so, no wonder, that people drink alcohol alcohol more than liver, gallbladder and pancreatic disorders.

By common sense, in all symptoms of indigestion is wise to stop consumption of acid-forming foods and substances. Simple chemistry requires for neutralizing acidity to supply the body with minerals and bicarbonates, which are collected in great quantity in fresh vegetables and fruits.

There is another way to provide organism with minerals and bicarbonates. Europeans knew this hundreds of years. There are many healthy mineral spas around Europe where healthy and sick people spend healthy vacations. Most North Americans tend to think of mineral water as something to drink either as a snack or with meals. However, for more than 500 years, European doctors have used mineral water for Health and Wellness.

The Czech city of Karlovy Vary has been a legendary healing European resort since the 1700s.

According to legend, one of the first patients was the Roman Emperor and Bohemian King Charles IV (Karl IV), whose name the town of Karlovy Vary (Charles Springs – Karlsbad) bears in 1370.
European doctors became interested in the springs and many medical books, articles and dissertations confirmed the beneficial effects of drinking cures.

Karlovy Vary mineral water was so popular for healing digestive disorders that from 1764 the natural Karlovy Vary salt is produced by evaporating mineral waters from the famous hot spring Vridlo.
By dissolving the Genuine Karlovy Vary mineral salt in warm water, everyone can get the healing mineral water with identical healing properties to the water from the Karlovy Vary hot water springs.
By measurement of saliva and urine pH by litmus paper, one can see shift to normal, slightly alkaline level of these fluids after drinking Karlovy Vary healing mineral water at home.

Bile and pancreatic juice are alkaline mineral solution. Nutritional supplement with special forms of magnesium and potassium such as natural for our body, Krebs organic acids salts can also neutralize the whole body acidity and promote good quality of the bile and pancreatic juice.

Fat in the food is normal trigger to open valve and move bile and pancreatic juice into small intestine. Due to slogan "No Fat, No Cholesterol" Americans avoid oily foods, mistakenly mix good fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, avocados, butter, nuts with bad fats such as animal fats and artificial trans-fats. Deficiency of good fats can lead to bile and pancreatic juice congestion with gallbladder stones, shortage of the fat-soluble vitamins and indigestion.

Thousand years' people used spicy herbs Anise, Chamomile, Fennel, Ginger, Oregano, Peppermint, Sage, Thyme, Turmeric, and so on for better digestion. These herbs can promote producing and elimination bile and pancreatic juice so can be useful for digestive disorders.

Many Americans know about using acupuncture for lower back pain but do not realize that this ancient method is very beneficial for many liver, gallbladder and pancreas disorders. Acupuncture in experienced hands may alleviate abdominal spasms and pains, stop diarrhea, improve peristaltic, decrease appetite and even promote elimination of small gallbladder stones.

Mother Nature placed most of the digestive organs in the abdomen.

There is a large crowd there. If one organ starts to move slowly or even stops, everything goes wrong and the whole digestive system suffers. Each organ needs its space to work. The most "difficult" position holds the pancreas. The pancreas is squeezed between the stomach, duodenum, liver, spleen, left part of the large intestine, aorta, inferior vena cava and spinal column. There is really no space in this area.

If a person suffices from gas or constipation, the pressure inside the abdomen increases, similar to a tight cloth or belts. Squeezing of inner abdominal organs lead them to stick together causing adhesions. This is, in its turn, causing more restrictions in moving and congestion.

For thousands of years, healers have utilized massage techniques for "moving" and stimulating proper work of all the digestive organs to alleviate pain and discomfort.

Contrary to Europe, the American words "dieting" and "diet" mostly refer to the deliberate selection of food to control body weight but not for the healing purposes of different kinds of medical conditions. Dietary changes are vitally important in any digestive disorders. Food is the cheap, safe and effective medicine.

To summarize, all liver, gallbladder and pancreas diseases do not suddenly fall from the sky. Often they needed 5-15 years to develop. We have to listen to our body because even small symptoms of indigestion can be small alarming bell of serious problems in future.

Non-drug, non-knife approaches may stop the process and post pone deterioration of many liver, gallbladder and pancreas disorders. Do not prove them yourself, self-treatment is risky business. The goal is to find the knowledgeable health provider or even team of professionals.

ADHD Causes – Immune System

In today's highly industrialized environment, our bodies are constantly under attack by pollutants and harmful substances. Even the air we breathe and the food we eat contains all sorts of toxins, pathogens, and disease-carrying microbes. Without a well-functioning immune system, we would not live very long.

The immune system is the human body's main defense system against pathogens and other harmful organizations. It provides two stages of protection: specific defenses and non-specific defenses. Our skin and mucous membranes make up the non-specific defenses, the immune system's first line of defense that protects our muscles and organs from the outside world. If the non-specific defenses are invaded by an outside threat (eg, a virus), the specific defenses kick in and detect the microorganisms, which are destroyed before they wreak havoc on our cells.

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are often found to have one of two kinds of problems with their immune system: either it weakened or it is over-active. There are many things that can weaken their immune defense, and many of them have to do with poor nutrition. Children with ADHD tend to have unhealthy eating habits – too much processed food, sugar, and refined carbohydrates, and not enough fruits, green leafy vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids. When the immune system is weakened, brain functions do not work up to par, and other bodily systems are inflamed. The presence of too many processed foods and saturated fats also weakens the production of a hormone called leptin. Leptin is integral for producing white blood cells, an important component of immune system functions. Finally, a weak immune system can also be caused by constant exposure to toxins like mercury and lead, as well as the continued presence of chronic viral infections.

It is possible for an immune system to get over-activated when it is plagued by constant exposure to antigens or allergens. When improperly digested proteins or food allergens infiltrate the bloodstream, they trigger an immune response that would not otherwise occur. An over-active immune system also occurs during gut dysbiosis, or an imbalance between healthy gut flora and harmful bacteria. The body's defenses that remains consistently on its guard to fight the overgrowth of harmful bacteria. Dysbiosis prevents the gastrointestinal tract from performing its critical functions of nutrient absorption and toxin filtration. Instead, the gut absorbs the toxins and keeps nutrients out, causing deficiencies that trigger chronic hyperactivity and inattention.

The interrelated functioning of the immune system, gastrointestinal system, and neurological system sheds light on the importance of maintaining health by eating the right foods and avoiding processed, sugary foods with artificial additives. This perspective also demonstrates that ADHD is not purely caused by biological factors. Rather, ADHD is the result of many complex environmental triggers interacting with the genetic predisposition to the disorder. This is why the right treatment plan should be designed around eliminating the triggers of the disorder naturally, instead of merely suppressing the symptoms with medication. Only in this manner can a child overcome ADHD for life, without suffering from long-term side effects.

The Law of Attraction Versus the Law of Reversibility

Lately, I’ve been pondering which of these two laws is more relevant in these times… The Law of Attraction or the Law of Reversibility?

In reality, they are not in opposition, but rather they work together in harmony.

Unless you’ve spent the past few years in total isolation, its very likely that you’ve heard something about the Law of Attraction (LOA).

The basic premise of the LOA, is that like attracts like. In other words, the circumstances you are experiencing in your life are as a direct result of your dominating thoughts, both conscious and unconscious. Therefore, the Law is at work at all time, regardless of your awareness of it or attention toward it.

In 2006, a cinematic release entitled “The Secret” helped to catapult the Law of Attraction into the mainstream. Many people that were newcomers to the concepts of the Law mistakenly interpreted the content to mean that all you needed to do in order to fulfill your desires was to “ask” for something, focus your attention on it, and **POOF**, you’d magically get it!

…Just make a wish!

And sadly, many people (maybe even you?) have discounted the validity of the Law because they’ve failed to achieve measurable results from their initial attempts at applying the concepts in their lives.

But it’s not your fault…

The problem is that you weren’t taught anything about the Law of Reversibility. And without a working knowledge of THIS Law, your results are likely to be marginal, at best.

Yet it’s likely that you’ve never even heard of The Law of Reversibility, right?

It’s somewhat difficult to describe, but when you officially “get it”, your life may never be the same!

First, you must understand that all transformations of force are reversible. (Heat is an example of a transformation of force, as is electricity, or controlled imagination, and so is cause-and-effect).

For example, if friction (a transformation of force) can produce electricity, then The Law of Reversibility dictates that electricity can produce friction. Is this making sense to you?

To put it another way, if a physical fact can produce a psychological state, then IN REVERSE, a psychological state can produce a physical fact.

And why does this matter? Well…think of the implications…

If you knew exactly how you would feel if you were to realize your dream or objective, and could replicate that feeling mentally, physically, and psychologically (controlling your state of mind), then the Law of Reversibility would automatically cause your objective to be realized. Make sense?

Your job then, is to assume and sustain the exact feeling associated with your dream or goal being fulfilled, until such time that your dream objectifies itself. And in order to sustain that feeling, you must live, move, and BE in that state of belief…

The belief that you already ARE or HAVE that which you desire.

“Get it” yet?

Instead of just making a wish and concentrating on your desired outcome, I want you to assume the feeling of your dream fulfilled, and then continue to practice experiencing that feeling until that which you FEEL becomes your reality.

I’d love to hear how you are successfully using these Laws to accomplish your goals! Please visit my blog or send me an email!

Until next time, be creative!

Do You Know How To Differentiate Hemorrhoids From Rectal Polyps?

There are lots of similarities between internal hemorrhoids and rectal polyps; both diseases affect the ano-rectal area and they are outgrowths from within the lower rectum.

Rectal polyps are fleshy growths situated in the lining of the large intestine; they can also arise in other parts of the colon. These growths are very common and their incidence increases with age; about 50% of people over the age of 50 years will have at least one form of these growths.

The main danger of having these growths is that some of them can become cancerous when they transform into more deadly cancers of the colon.

Hemorrhoids on the other hand are basically painful, swollen and inflamed veins of the lower portion of the rectum or anus. These inflamed venous tissues are very common in pregnant women and in elderly people. They occur as a result of increased pressure within the veins of the anus which causes them to swell and become painful.

Both of these diseases can be asymptomatic and they could also present with similar symptoms of painless intermittent rectal bleeding. There are however some marked differences between these two similar conditions:

1-Rectal polyps are benign tumors that could transform into malignant tumors over time; this is why doctors usually cut a small portion of these growths which they send to the laboratory for examination under the microscope to check for the presence of malignant and cancerous cells.

Internal piles on the other hand are not really tumors; they are swollen masses of over dilated veins and their surrounding inflamed tissues. They do not become malignant and they are not usually life threatening.

2-Polyps cause mainly abdominal pain while hemorrhoid pain causes more of pain in the butt. Piles also lead to constipation whereas constipation actually leads to piles.

3-Because of their potential to transform into malignant tumors, polyps are treated mainly by surgical excision. If they can be totally removed their chances of future transformation into malignant tumors is greatly reduced.

Hemorrhoids however are best treated by a simple lifestyle and diet changes in combination with the use of herbal remedies. Surgery is only reserved for the few severe cases that were most likely not treated on time till they developed complications.

4-You can prevent piles successfully by adopting simple lifestyle changes that includes simple exercises, diet changes and the consumption of high fiber foods. Lifestyle and diet changes on the other hand have no effect on the successful treatment and outcome of rectal polyps.

Myoma – What Every Woman Should Know

What is Myoma?

Myomas are non cancerous tumors that are commonly found in the uterus. It is a condition that affects almost 75% of women, especially women in their 30’s and 40’s.

Just last month, I was experiencing abdominal pains and headaches, so I decided to consult my doctor. The doctor did a couple of tests, CT scans, and found multiple cysts in my uterus. Hearing the word “tumor”, I got scared, because the condition was very new to me and my family. The doctor was kind enough to let me know the details. According to him, uterine tumors or myomas are completely normal in women after giving birth. They tend to grow during the reproductive years, due to the boost in estrogen levels. I calmed down knowing that these tumors are actually not cancerous.

There are different treatments for myoma, some doctors prescribe only medicines. In my case, the doctor recommended surgery because the tumors were causing discomfort and occasional pain. Personally, I prefer not to have surgery if there is an alternative. But anyway, I trust my doctor, so I went on to have Myomectomy. Prior to the surgery, I was required to eat healthy foods, and was not allowed to eat at least 8 hours before the operation. While the preparation was hard enough, the actual operation ran smoothly. I was given anesthesia and it was very quick. I did not feel a thing. I was always the weak type, but just after 2 days, I was able to get up and I felt a lot better, as if nothing happened. The operation was a total success and I thank my doctor for the excellent job.

I think that uterine tumors are very common to us women, and we must face it eventually. So if you think you have Myoma, please consult your doctor immediately. It is not really something you must be afraid of. Just remember to choose your doctor with care. Having a good doctor will ensure you a quick and smooth recovery.

Treatment For Ovarian Cysts – Aromatherapy is a Fantastic Alternative

There are many options for the treatment of ovarian cysts. Apart from seeking medical remedies, there are a variety of herbal treatments available. One of these recommended methods that offer relief from the pain and discomfort caused by ovarian cysts is aromatherapy.

Many women have come to favor this kind of treatment because it is inexpensive and brings about other physical benefits.

The Basics of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a holistic approach that treats cysts, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and other medical conditions. It makes use of essential oils extracted from plants and herbs which are known to treat pain and bring back hormonal balance to the body.

History records the use of essential oils in various illnesses, and the condition of having ovarian cysts is no exception. These concentrated aromatic oils are used in different ways: they can be inhaled, rubbed and applied into skin or incorporated into the bath. It can also be used as massage oil to improve the flow of blood circulation.

Aromatherapy has many advantages, the most important of which is that it stimulates the sense of smell. It sends signals to the brain's limbic system, the body part responsible for stabilizing strong emotions and improving mood control. It brings a sense of calm and is therefore beneficial to those who feel irritable because of the pain thought about by ovarian cysts.

Essential Oils for the Treatment of Ovarian Cysts

There are a multitude of plant essences and oils in the market today and each of them have their own uses. For the treatment of ovarian cysts, a concoction of jasmine, geranium and sage is recommended.

Jasmine is known to ease depression and is a confidence booster. Mixed with geranium and sage, it has been proven to be an effective remedy for pain.

Indeed, aromatherapy is a good option to treat these fluid-filled sacs. It does not involve any surgery and is thus non-invasive. However, pregnant women and people suffering from epilepsy, high blood pressure and asthma are cautioned to talk to their doctors before engaging in aromatherapy treatments because their conditions prohibit the use of some oils.

Babies With Thrush and Diaper Rash

There are different signs and symptoms that let a parent know when their child has a diaper rash. It can be a chronic issue that is very uncomfortable and sometimes painful. It should be treated properly and not left ignored. Diaper rash itself can also be a symptom of another undering problem that your baby may have. Thrush is a form of a yeast infection just like other rashes are. Some rashes are caused by Candida albicans which is a type of yeast. If your baby does have thrush, it is not uncommon that they will also have a rash from their diaper.

There are side effects that thrush causes that will help you determine if your baby has it or not. The symptoms look different from a rash caused by a diaper. Thrush only occurs in the mouth and there will by small white patches on the roof of the mouth, the sides, and on their tongue. Most parents say that it looks like there is milk stuck on their baby's mouth. Usually newborns develop this type of rash and it 'll occur up to four to six weeks after birth.

Unlike other rashes, thrush can go untreated. It usually does not cause a lot of pain or irritation. If your child does appear to be uncomfortable, you may need to treat it with an antifungal like you do with other rashes such as diaper rash. If there is discomfort, it will usually only be when they are feeding. The rash should clear up within a couple of weeks on its own. If it does not, you may need to consult your doctor about the rash.

Unlike a diaper rash, there is nothing that can be done to prevent thrush from occurring. A rash caused from diapers can be invented and treated with diaper ointment . Thrush is not as severe as some other types of rashes that can not be left untreated. If your child does develop thrush, it is more important for you to treat the diaper rash that may also appear because of the Candida albicans. If you are breastfeeding, you also need to watch for thrush to appear on your own body. It can pass from child to mother and vice versa. You can treat thrush on your body with an antifungal.

If your newborn develops these types of rashes, be sure to give them a little extra love and attention. Be sure that the rashes do not get too severe or strangersome to your baby. Thrush is not dangerous to your child's health but it should not be ignored either. Treat any rashes that may develop.

There is this theory with regards to detoxification and is widely known among Asian countries. This is like washing oily dishes without dishwashing soap or hot water to use. Of course, the dishes still have grease as expected because of the absence of a cleanser. That is also the same as when toxic chemicals and other food additives entered inside the body, it needs a very "tough cleanser" to scour the body clean from inside out. This theory that is related to detoxification has been acknowledged and has been put into practice for about 3,000 years by the Chinese society and other Asian countries such as in Indian Ayurvedic medicine.

It is also an imperative to realize that detoxification does not work alone. It involves careful monitoring and understanding of the various materials that will facilitate the body build up strength and fight against disease-causing substances.

Obesity, Alcohol & Liver Disease

The information in this column is intended for informational purposes only, and does not stipulate medical advice or recommendations by the author. Please consult with your physician before making any lifestyle or medication changes, or if you have any other concerns regarding your health.

OBESITY, ALCOHOL & LIVER DISEASE

Chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis, is the 12th most common cause of death in the United States, alone, and causes nearly 30,000 deaths per year in America. Increased alcohol intake and obesity are both known risk factors for chronic liver disease. Moreover, recent research has suggested that the combination of alcohol take and obesity may synergistically increase the risk of chronic liver disease above and beyond the sum of these two risk factors. Two newly published prospect, randomized clinical research studies from the United Kingdom further suggest that increased alcohol intake in the presence of obesity significantly increases the risk of chronic liver disease, and premature death related to chronic liver disease. Both of these studies appear in the current issue of the British Medical Journal.

In the first study, more than 1.2 million women (average age was 56 years) were enrolled between 1996 and 2001. In this Million Woman Study, after an average duration of follow-up of 6.2 years, 1,811 women were either admitted to a hospital with a new diagnosis of cirrhosis, or died of cirrhosis. Based upon the extensive health data collected from all of the participants in this public public health study, both obesity and alcohol intake were proportionally linked to an increased risk of cirrhosis, as well as death due to cirrhosis. (Note: a standard glass of wine, mixed drink, or beer contains about 0.6 ounces, or 14 grams, of alcohol.)

For every 5 units of BMI above 22.5, the relative risk of cirrhosis increased by 28 percent (BMI is a standard measure of body fat content that is adjusted for height and weight). Among women who reported the consumption of less than 70 grams of alcohol per week (equivalent to 5 alcoholic drinks per week), the absolute risk of developing cirrhosis, over a period of 5 years, was 20 percent higher in women with a BMI of 30 or more, when compared to non-obese women with normal BMIs ("obesity" is defined as a BMI of 30, or greater; while being "overweight is defined as having a BMI of 25 or greater, but less than 30). the women who reported consuming 150 grams or more of alcohol per week (which is equivalent to 11 or more alcoholic drinks per week), a normal BMI was associated with a 170 percent increase in the absolute risk of developing cirrhosis, while obese women (with a BMI of 30 or greater) who consumed 150 grams or more of alcohol per week experienced a whooping 400 percent increase in the risk of developing cirrhosis! When this data was extrapolated to the population of the United Kingdom, as a whole, it was determined that alcohol consumption, particu larly at higher levels, accounted for 42 percent of all cases of non-fatal and fatal cirrhosis in middle-aged women, while obesity caused an additional 17 percent of all non-fatal and fatal cases of cirrhosis of the liver.

In the second published study in the British Medical Journal, data from two prospective clinical studies was analyzed. A total of 9,559 men participated in these prospective public health studies, with a highly impressive medium follow-up of 29 years. These nearly 10,000 male study participants were divided into separate study groups based upon their measured BMI and their self-reported alcohol intake.

During nearly 3 decades of observation, 80 (0.8 percent) of these male research volunteers died directly due to chronic liver disease, while another 146 (1.5 percent) died of multiple causes, but with liver disease as a contributing cause of death.

As with the previous study, there were significant interactions between alcohol intake, BMI, and chronic liver disease (after adjusting for other known risk factors for chronic liver disease). In this study, the consumption of 15 or more alcoholic drinks per week in volunteers with a normal BMI more than doubled the relative risk of dying of chronic liver disease when compared to other non-obese men who consumed less than 15 drinks per week. Among the overweight (but not obese) men who consumed 15 or more alcoholic drinks per week, the relative risk of death due to chronic liver disease was more than 7 times higher than was observed in overweight men who consumed significantly less than 15 drinks per week . Finally, and most disconcertingly, obese men who consumed 15 or more alcoholic drinks per week experienced nearly 18 times the relative risk of dying from chronic liver disease as compared to their obese counterparts who drank significantly less alcohol. (Even some obese men who consumed 14 or fewer alcoholic drinks per week, the relative risk of death due to chronic liver disease was still more than 4 times higher than what was observed in obese men who did not drink alcoholic drinks at all.)

Based upon this data, the researchers conducting this study were able to determine that there was a synergistic, enhanced risk of dying from liver disease when alcohol was present in addition to being overweight or obese. This "relative excess risk" due to an interaction between alcohol take and increasing BMI is increased to 4 times the relative risk of simply adding the individual liver disease risks of increased BMI and alcohol intake.

Taken together, these two large prospective public health studies confirm previous observations that both rising levels of excess weight and increasing levels of regular alcohol intake are associated, both separately and together, with an increased risk of chronic liver disease, and death due to chronic liver disease. Moreover, the combination of obesity and increased alcohol intake appears to be a particularly severe risk factor for the development of chronic liver disease, and for death due to liver disease. Therefore, in addition to the multiple other health risks associated with obesity and excess alcohol intake, the results of these two studies should cause all of us to reexamine our lifestyle and dietary habits in our pursuit of better health and greater longevity.

From Bones to Stones – Formation of Kidney Stones in Hyperparathyroidism

Kidney stones can cause a great deal of pain and may require surgical removal. A single stone the size of a grain of sand can cause such excruciating pain already. There are several factors that could facilitate the formation of kidney stones and hyperparathyroidism is one of them. But why is a hormone concerned mainly with bones involved in the formation of kidney stones? First, we must explore the functions of the parathyroid hormone itself.

The Parathyroid Hormone

The parathyroid hormone increases calcium and phosphate absorption from the bone. It does this by utilizing two mechanisms. One is a rapid phase in which the osteocytes are activated to pump calcium and phosphate ions from the bone fluid into the extracellular fluid. Another requires the activation of cells called osteoclasts. Unlike the osteocytes, parathyroid hormone does not directly exert its influence on the osteoclasts. Instead a signal from the activated osteocytes will further activate the osteoclasts to increase bone resorption activity.

Furthermore, parathyroid hormone also increases renal tubular reabsorption of calcium while it diminishes phosphate reabsorption. It also increases the rate of reabsorption of magnesium and hydrogen ions while it decrees the reabsorption of sodium, potassium, and amino acid ions in almost the same way it affects phosphate. Calcium reabsorption is increased mainly in the late distal tubules, the collecting tubules, the early collecting ducts, and even the ascending loop of Henle to a certain extent.

This mechanism maintains the amount of calcium in the body. If it were not for this effect of the parathyroid hormone on the kidneys, there would be constant loss of calcium through the urine. In time, this would complete both the extracellular fluids and the bone of such a mineral.

Formation of Kidney Stones in Hyperparathyroidism

Some patients with mild hyperparathyroidism may show signs of bone disease but most of the hyperparathyroid patients have the tension to form kidney stones. This may be due to the fact that the excess calcium and phosphate absorbed by the intestines or mobilized from the bones under the influence of parathyroid hormone must be excreted by way of the kidneys, causing an increase in the concentration of these substitutes in the urine. Because of this, calcium phosphate crystals tend to form in the kidney, forming calcium phosphate stones. Calcium oxalate stones may also develop because even normal levels of oxalate will cause calcium precipitation at high calcium levels.

Most renal stones are also only slightly soluble in alkaline media. This is the reason why there is a greater tendency for renal stones to form in alkaline urine than in acidic urine. This is the logic behind the acidic diets and acidic drugs frequently used to treat renal calculi or kidney stones.
