The Psychology Behind the Fear of Commitment

Fear of commitment refers to the fear of forming long-lasting relationships. The term commitment phobia was first coined in 1987 by Steven Carter in his book, Men Who Can’t Love. Commitment phobia is common in men, but recently, studies show that both men and women have an equal tendency to experience commitment phobia. Commitment phobia is usually manifested across many domains of life. It is not only limited to relationships, but can also include fear of commitment with work, families and friends. It is an incapacitating phenomenon that affects a person’s entire life.

Men and women have different reasons why they fear commitment. Some men do not like the idea that they have to ask permission whenever they hang out with their buddies. They want to keep their personal space, and so they fear being committed to someone. Some men do not believe having only one sex partner is natural, thus they question themselves if they are able to form lasting relationships with one person, even if they are extremely in-love with someone. Other men have been continuously deceived by women, and so they avoid lasting relationships that will end in the same manner. They are afraid that their financial resources will be consumed by someone who might be using them just for their money. Men who were cheated on by their wives and later divorced fear forming another lasting relationship. Many of them choose not to marry again.

Women, on the other hand, fear commitment because they have been hurt numerous times by people who they seriously loved. They have been cheated on and deceived by someone who they gave their full trust to. Because of this, they generalize all men as deceitful, not able to keep their word, and not serious with relationships. That all they ever want is to “use you and throw you”. Some women were deceived by their husbands and divorced them. These women are often afraid of investing their emotions in someone new, and experience the same painful breakup. Still, some women fear commitment because they see their “fathers” as a poor role model. Being able to witness how their fathers hurt their mothers physically and psychologically, they are afraid of being married and committed to someone who might do the same to them.

People with commitment phobia are experiencing fear within them. They fear being hurt by their partners. Many of us have experienced those times in our lives when we’ve felt depressed or anxious. For some these feelings are a daily part of life. Sometimes we don’t address our fears because we refuse to admit to ourselves there is a problem and we definitely wouldn’t want anyone else to know. We have all been hurt on occasion due to expectations that were not met on the part of another individual. The pain of mistrust can lead to long periods of alienation. There’s probably nothing worse than feeling like an outsider. When people refuse to accept you it can definitely have an affect on you self-esteem. Even though it hurts we have to remember we have probably done the same thing to someone else at some point and time. Sometimes we have to examine our motives for desiring the company of certain groups or individuals. It could be that we feel our association with them just may elevate our status. Who knows it just may. However, the goal is to surround ourselves with positive people to help built confidence not tear it down. After all I’d rather walk in my own light than live in someone else’s.


Life goes through many stages. Knowing when to move on can definitely be a factor in preventing loneliness. My kids moved away to college. What do you do with your life when your life was all about them for twenty years. Move on. You work at a job for 35 years. It’s all you know. You refuse to retire because you can’t imagine what you will do without the job and the relationships you’ve built over the years. What do you do? Move on. Your husband wakes up one morning and tells you he no longer wants to be married. He’s met someone else – online. You’ve been married for years. You have children. You thought – this is it – I’m secure. What do you do? Move on. I’m not making light of any of these situations as they are all very serious. I’m simply saying if you stay where you were left you forfeit your chance of any real happiness.

Bitterness and Hostility

These two just make a person down right ugly. They’re very hard to miss. When a person is bitter you know it. They’re not just bitter some of the time – they’re bitter all the time; I mean 24/7. If you happen to be this way please understand that this condition does to the soul and spirit what termites do to wood. These two will eat away at you to the point where you can’t even stand yourself. So,whatever is making you bitter address it. And if you don’t know you’re bitter just observe the affect you have on others.


We live in a world of selfishness and unfairness. We all have things we find hard even impossible to forgive people for. What I discovered over the years is unforgiveness has failed to accomplish the goal I expected it would. That goal was to make the offender feel guilty, ashamed, and apologetic. It just didn’t happen. All it did was keep my mind at the scene of the crime. Ultimately, time moved on without me and I became more and more a faded memory in the mind of the offender.

Shame and embarrassment

There are things in life we do to ourselves and to others that can cause use to feel ashamed and embarrassed so much so that we can hardly bear the weight of it. Each time we see someone or something that reminds us of what we’ve done we relive the experience all over again. I’ve found that it just doesn’t do any good to beat yourself up. It’s best to find the courage to ask forgiveness and set things straight.

Abuse and Violence

We can all understand and except that there is violence and abuse in the world, but when it’s in our very home it is a living hell. You feel unloved, unsafe, insecure and often blame yourself for what is happening. People who grow up this way can end up carrying this experience through life. No one has the right to make another persons life miserable yet it happens everyday. If this is you you need not feel ashamed. You did nothing wrong. None of it is your fault. Get together with people you trust who can really help. Your life is valuable – reclaim your worth.


None of the above mentioned has the power to cloud judgment and cause us to do things that are contrary to what we know is right. It’s that little person on the inside that makes it difficult for us to apologize. It’s that person that tells us to put ourselves first. When pride gets in the way it’s really in the way. It steps aside for no one. It grows and just doesn’t stop until we put it under subjection. Pride has ruined many relationships and continues to do so. There’s no room for this kind of pride in your life. It’s not easy to show humility but it most certainly is worth it.

Causes, Symptoms and Care of an Ingrown Fingernail

An ingrown fingernail is a condition where the nail grows into the peripheral nail bed. The peripheral soft tissues or the paronychium gets inflamed and becomes painful due to the inward growth of the nail and leads to pain. The inflammation further leads to hyper granulation of the tissues and this makes the nail bury into the swollen nail bed. The inflammation can occur on a single side or can even be on both the sides of a finger.

It is very easy to identify an ingrown fingernail, the later sides of the skin folding over the nail gives the finger a rounded look. Besides, the nail and the surrounding bed are extremely painful to touch too. Even a slightest touch of a bed sheet can be painful to the person. Some of the common symptoms of ingrown fingernail are swelling with pain, redness and inflammation. The finger can become so tender to touch that many times the person is forced to keep the finger away from every activity. The pain and inflammation is later followed by formation of pus or abscess between the nail and the nail bed.

There are ways to prevent the nail from growing inward. Though an ingrown fingernail has a genetic predisposition factor attached to it, there are many other common causative factors attributing to the same. It has been noticed that siblings belonging to the same family can have a strong disposition to have an ingrown fingernail. Besides this, habits like nail biting, improper nail care and shapely curved cutting of the nails are some of the most common causes. It is always better to cut the nail straight and not curved. By cutting the nails curved, the ends are directed into the nail bed leading to the further growth into the lateral sides of the skin.

There are many easy home care treatments that can help ease the pain and inflammation of the affected finger. Soaking the affected finger in warm water is one of the most effective means. Adding Epsom salt or baking soda helps relieve the swelling and the pain as well. When the nail becomes soft after soaking, you can slowly and cautiously cut away the extended extra length that is piercing the skin. Applying antiseptic creams will help prevent the nail from getting infected. If the nail is very painful taking a pain killer or NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, will be helpful. Ankle Sprains – A Physical Therapists Perspective

Introduction Sprained ankles are one of the leading causes of athletes to miss games during the season. Many times they are taped up & rushed back to the field without proper rehabilitation. More often than not, the ankle gets re-injured or worse, they end up with a knee, hip or low back injury. These injuries can be prevented by providing the proper healing time and rehabilitation. The same premise holds true for non-athletes. I have worked with a number of patients that have had multiple ankle sprains that were never given the opportunity to fully rehabilitate. The most common complaint is that their ankle turns over at any time without warning. All it takes is a slight bend in the pavement and the ankle turns. This type of injury is frustrating and can become debilitating. This article discusses the different types of ankle sprains, what to do following a sprain, and what does rehabilitation of the ankle involve?

Brief Anatomy The ankle is made up of three primary bones. The tibia & fibula, which are the longs bones of the lower leg and the talus which is a major bone of the foot. Together they make up the talocrural joint. The mobility of these bones allows the foot to flex and extend which is required for propulsion during walking. The other major joint of the ankle is formed by the lower portion of the talus and the upper portion of the calcaneus (heel bone). These two bones form what is called the subtalar joint, which allows for movement in and out (inversion/eversion). This inversion motion is the most common mechanism of injury. The ligaments are tissues that connect bone to bone. Their function is to provide stability to the joint. There are three main ligaments on the outside of the ankle called the lateral collateral ligaments. Their function is to prevent the ankle from inverting too far. The inside of the ankle is protected by the deltoid ligament, which functions to prevent excessive eversion or turning out.

Mechanism of injury – The most typical ankle sprain is an inversion sprain. This occurs when the ankle turns inward and the bodies weight compresses the ankle brining the lateral malleolus close to the floor. This excessive movement places the lateral ligaments on strain, stretches the tendons crossing the joint and can also lead to some of the tarsal bones compressing on one another. The greater the inversion force results in a more severe ankle sprain or fracture. For the purposes of this article, I will only be covering ankle sprains, not fractures.

What is the difference between a sprain and a strain? This is a common question. A sprain results from a stress placed upon a ligament. Remember a ligament connects one bone to another bone. A sprain is a partial or full tear in the ligament or at the junction of where the ligament attaches to the bone. A strain results from an excessive force or overload on a muscle leading to micro-tears in the muscle belly or tendon. A tendon is a tissue similar in strength to a ligament that connects a muscle to the bone. Both ligaments and tendons are non-contractile tissue. Only muscle has the ability to contract (shorten).

Grading an ankle sprain There are three different grades of an ankle sprain based on the severity of the injury.

Grade I (1st degree)– This is the most common type of sprain. The ligaments are overstretched but no visible tear has occurred. Microscopic tears have occurred that will heal if treated properly. Minimal swelling should occur and only minor ankle instability will be present.

Grade II (2nd degree)– This is a more severe injury and the ligament has sustained a partial tear. The ankle will typically be more swollen and ecchymosis (bruising) will usually occur. The ankle will be more unstable and painful compared to a grade I.

Grade III (3rd degree)– This is the most severe injury as the ligament has been completely torn. This is the most painful ankle sprain and will typically present as very hot and swollen with a lot of ecchymosis sometimes tracking halfway up the lower leg.

Immediate care following ankle sprain – Following a turned ankle, it is difficult to determine the severity based on a number of factors. Swelling may occur immediately making the injury seem worse than it actually is. If the ankle does not swell, this does not necessarily minimize the possibility of torn ligaments. Tenderness will usually be present on the outside of the ankle with an inversion sprain. It also may be difficult to stand on the injured foot. The safest advice would be to keep the shoe/sneaker tied tight to prevent the ankle from swelling. Keep the weight off the foot as much as possible. When the shoe is taken off, the leg should be elevated above the heart and an ice pack should be compressed against the ankle. This will help decrease both the pain and swelling. This technique is called R.I.C.E standing for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. R.I.C.E is a good pneumonic for any injury to the extremities.

Should I go to the hospital? If you are having difficulty putting weight on the foot, if the swelling is severe, and the pain has not reduced after a few hours of using the R.I.C.E technique, a visit to the hospital is recommended. Prepare to wait in the emergency room for a while. Ankle sprains are not usually treated as a priority. The doctor will examine the ankle looking for joint and ligament instabilities. He/She may also order an X-ray to check for fractures. On occasion, an MRI will be ordered to assess ligament damage.

Physical Therapy/Rehabilitation It is common following an ankle sprain to be placed on crutches. More severe sprains are placed in a boot or air cast to help with ankle stability. There are four major categories of impairments that occur following an ankle sprain. These include 1. Ankle joint instability due to weakened ligamentous structures 2. Muscle weakness 3. Poor balance (proprioception) 4. Pain and swelling. Each of these impairments must be addressed for a successful rehabilitation. Physical therapists will utilize various massage techniques and modalities to reduce inflammation. Manual therapy techniques will be used to restore normal joint mechanics and to retrain the proper muscle firing patterns necessary for stability. An effort is required to normalize your walking (gait) as quickly as possible to prevent compensations. Finally, a specific strengthening program that incorporates the entire lower extremity and core muscles is provided to improve overall strength, balance and coordination. Each ankle sprain is different from the next & everybody heals at a different rate. Typically, rehabilitation following an ankle sprain can be as short as two weeks (4 visits) up to eight weeks (20 visits). This does not take into account any other co-morbidities.

Conclusion Ankle sprains if managed properly through physical therapy and a conscious effort to comply with a home exercise program are usually rehabilitated very successfully with low chance of re-injury. However, if an ankle sprain is not fully rehabilitated, the chances of re-injury with more severe damage increase greatly.

Ball of foot pain is classically know as metatarsalgia (MET – tuh   tar – SAL – juh). The term metatarsalgia is used as a catch-all term used to describe a number of medical conditions which cause pain under the ball of the foot. The long bones in the foot are called metatarsals and the end where the metatarsals meet the toes are called the metatarsal phalangeal joints. Combining the name of the bones, “metatarsal” with the suffix “algia” means pain appropriately describes this condition. The heads of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsals make up what most consider the ball of the foot. These joints are the most commonly affected due to excess pressure, overuse and/or microtrauma, which results in inflammation and pain.

The most common symptom is deep, achy pain under the ball of the foot which can become sharp or stabbing with standing or walking. Many times it’s a combination of the above contributors which results in metatarsalgia. Faulty foot mechanics are an inherited trait resulting in abnormal motion of the foot. In forefoot conditions, tight calf muscles and overpronation (over-rotation and foot collapse) cause excess pressure on the forefoot. Tight calf muscles cause the heel to lift early when walking and this redistributes the weight toward the front of the foot. Over-rotation of the foot and arch collapse, in combination with hypermobility of the 1st ray (arch and great toe) causes the weight to shift from the great toe to the smaller toe joints when walking. An substantial and abnormal force is placed on a small area of the foot during “push off” and this results in repetitive strain, irritation, inflammation and pain of the small joints (2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsal phalangeal joints) in the foot. Structural deformities such as hammertoes can cause pain under the ball of the foot. The hammertoe is a crooked toe which causes retrograde force on the metatarsal head. As the toe cocks up, the head of the metatarsal is pushed down. The metatarsal head is now prominent on the bottom of the forefoot and more susceptible to increased pressure. Many people will complain of the feeling of a lump or nodule under their foot or complain about walking on a bone under the ball of the foot.

Poor quality or ill-fitting shoes are one of the more common reasons for the development of ball of foot pain. Narrow, tight shoes compress the forefoot and force the metatarsal heads together. This position impairs normal function of the foot when walking and increases rub and irritation in the forefoot area.

Treatment involves identifying and addressing the cause of the problem. In many cases it is a combination of faulty foot mechanics, poor quality shoes and an change or increase in a training regimen or recent weight gain. Orthotics should be used to control abnormal foot motion and disperse pressure more evening.
