IUDs and Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is one of the less advertised possible side effect of IUDs, or intrauterine devices, yet women’s health forums are full of accounts from women who have lower back pain that began only after the insertion of an IUD.

IUDs are small, flexible, T-shaped contraceptive devices inserted through the cervix into the uterus. They disrupt the flow of sperm and prevent eggs from implanting in the uterine wall. There are two types of IUDs: copper and hormonal. Copper is toxic to sperm. Hormonal IUDs work to thicken mucus around the cervix, preventing sperm from entering.

There are a number of possible causes of lower back pain associated with IUD use. The timing and duration of the pain can indicate the cause. Lower back pain that lasts anywhere from a few hours to a couple of weeks after insertion may simply be due to the introduction of a foreign object into your body. Your uterus may experience cramping, and this can cause cramping in the lower back.

A possible cause of prolonged lower back pain after the insertion of an IUD is a change in menstruation. Copper IUDs have been associated with heavier menstrual bleeding. During menstruation, the body releases high levels of prostaglandins, chemicals that make the uterus contract. This contraction enables it to shed its lining, which is what leaves the body during menstruation. Contractions are what cause abdominal and lower back cramping. Muscle spasms in the lower back can result in pain.

While hormonal IUDs can actually help to relieve painful menstrual symptoms like cramping, they can cause back pain in other ways. Levonorgestrel, the hormone released by some IUDs, has been linked to back and pelvic pain in 1-10% of users. More on the potential side effects and risks of hormonal IUDs can be found at http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100001706.html.

Another possible long-term cause of lower back pain associated with IUD use is perforation of the uterus. This can occur during insertion if the medical professional performing the procedure makes a mistake. Along with failing to prevent pregnancy, an IUD in a perforated uterus can fall out of place. Misplaced IUDs can cause internal scarring or infection. Damage and inflammation of pelvic tissues can cause both pelvic and lower back pain.

One of the most popular concerns associated with IUD use is the increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This is caused by an infection that travels from the vagina to the cervix, and moves on to damage all of the female sex organs. IUDs do not cause PID, but they may help to spread it. PID is caused by sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhea and chlamydia. During insertion, an IUD may help the infection travel into the uterus. Infection of the reproductive organs can cause lower back pain through proximity.

There are many reasons a woman may choose an IUD over other contraceptive methods. Hormonal IUDs only need to be replaced every 5 years, and copper IUDs last for 10 years. They are hassle-free, discreet, and more effective than other forms of contraception. They are not perfect, however. They can dislodge, affect your period and cause health problems.

If you are at risk of sexually transmitted disease, IUDs should not be used. If menstrual periods are often heavy, then copper IUDs should not be used. Make sure you have a careful and experienced medical professional insert an IUD. If your back pain lasts longer than two weeks after insertion, or if it is severe, then you should see a doctor. An ultrasound or physical exam can determine if the IUD is still in place. Keep track of your symptoms and educate yourself on the benefits and risks associated with various forms of birth control.

Shingles Pain – What Are the Causes, Symptoms and Treatment?

One hardly ever equates lower back pain with herpes zoster or shingles. However, when there are wounds in the lumbar region brought on by this infectious disease, intense and debilitating pain is sure to be experienced. This problem is known as Postherpetic Neuralgia, and the pain caused from this condition is called Shingles Pain.

What is Herpes Zoster?

A contagious disease, herpes zoster is brought on by the Varicella Zoster Virus (VCV). In patients who have experienced chickenpox when they were young, the virus would infect the dorsal root ganglia of the nerves where it would stay in a latent state. Shingles will occur when this dormant virus is activated by some unknown process. While herpes zoster may appear at all ages, it mostly spotted in adults and particularly in the elderly.

Signs and Symptoms of Herpes Zoster

Within the dermatome of the skin, vesicular eruptions will develop, similar to chickenpox but without the rash, and these will develop unilaterally or on one side. However, unlike chickenpox which is itchy, the wounds of herpes zoster are excruciatingly agonizing, generally because they follow the nerve branches within the dermatome. Dermatome areas that are frequently associated in shingles are T-3 to L-3 and the lower back. Quite often, even before the lesions turn up after 48 to 72 hours, pain will be experienced within the dermatome as the condition begins to occur. The pain at this stage is called Acute Neuritis.

Although timeframe of the disease is between 7 to 10 days, it may take as long as 2 to 4 weeks before the skin returns to normal health and pain disappears.

How Shingles Pain Develops

From Acute Neuritis to Postherpetic Neuralgia. After several months or years that the disease has been resolved, 50% instances of herpes zoster patients, who are 50 years old and above, can manifest this illness yet again. This is referred to as Postherpetic Neuralgia.

Quite rare in younger age groups, postherpetic neuralgia is the most unbearable complication of herpes zoster and it can manifest in both normal and immunocompromised people. This problem is largely an ailment of the elderly. Hypesthesia and hyperesthesia, which are the decrease and irregular boost of sensitivity to sensory stimuli, respectively, may also be experienced in the damaged dermatome, apart from the severe unbearable pain.

How to Treat Shingles Pain

At the beginning of the ailment, famciclover, a medication of choice for herpes zoster, is provided to prevent further problems of postherpetic neuralgia.

It can be very difficult to manage a patient experiencing postherpetic neuralgia. For some patients, non-prescription NSAIDs will help reduce the problem while for others tougher narcotic types utilized in collaboration with tricyclic antidepressants like amitriptyline and fluphenazine are needed to reduce the situation. Cautious patient monitoring is critical though to protect against drug reliance.

Pain relief for 4 to 12 hours may be given with the application of lidocaine skin patches. Not only will it ease acute neuritis, corticosteroids may also be used to protect against the occurrence of postherpetic neuralgia. Made by Merck, the vaccine Zostavax is not only effective for shingles but it can also protect against postherpetic neuralgia. It is best to administer Zostavax to individuals above the age of 60.

Presently, when it comes to shingles, there are so many treatment choices out there. When a valuable remedy is seen, it could supply profound alleviation for shingles pain for the rest of their lives.

Numbness in Pinky Fingers – Causes and Treatment of a Trapped Ulnar Nerve

Numb pinky fingers are quite common when an ulnar nerve in your arms gets trapped. Ulnar nerve controls the sensation of the pinky, ring fingers and part of your palms. This can be experienced in day-to-day situations, while at work, in a car or during sports. Are you having this sensation right now, too? Let me share some important points about it.

What is ulnar nerve?

Ulnar nerve runs through your arms and controls the sensation in part of your hand and fingers. It is especially vulnerable in the area behind the elbow where it can get easily pinched. If you ever felt the sudden pins and needles in fingers by hitting your elbow, then you hit this nerve. This is also called funny bone sensation and usually goes away within few minutes.

Causes of numbness in fingers.

Loss of feeling in fingers is one of the signs of nerve entrapment. This can be caused by pressing the nerve against a table when resting or sitting improperly in front of computer, cyst formation, previous elbow fractures or current injury. This can last from minutes up to weeks, depending on seriousness of the cause. The best option is to visit your doctor if the numbness stays for more than several days.

Signs of nerve entrapment.

There are several symptoms, including loss of feeling in little fingers such as pinky and ring finger. Part of your hand might also get numb, too. The numbness gets stronger while an elbow is bent. When the arm is straight, the loss of feeling seems to be lesser intense.

Trapped nerve prevention and treatment.

Minor injuries of elbow are usually followed by swelling which blocks and traps the nerve against the bone. Your doctor will recommend non-surgical treatment for lesser serious injuries. If the injury is acute, this treatment will follow by surgical. This means you will have to go to a hospital to have it fixed.

The best advice for treatment to start with is to keep your arm in a straight position all the time. Do not rest your head on your elbow while working behind the desk or while driving your car. If you do not have proper medical equipment to keep your arm straight, just use a towel. Wrap the towel around your arm, which will prevent it from bending. Keep this on especially while sleeping when you consciously cannot prevent the bending.

If the injury is more serious, then try a combination of medicine helping to relief pain and inflammation. Include stretching exercises, too. I would recommend using Ibuprofen gel. Consult your doctor prior to use to make sure this is right for you. If it is ok, this can be found in most of the supermarkets around you. Buy a gel and rub it straight on the swollen place.

I got swollen elbows many times while practicing sports. First it really scared me because sudden loss of ability to feel the tips of my fingers is a scary experience. Nowadays, I am more relaxed about this topic because I constantly learn how to prevent and treat it. I hope this article gives you some good ideas, which will help you to find your way to avoid or treat these injuries, too.

What Age Group Are Rocking Horses Best Suited To?

When it comes to children furniture, there are many animals like elephants, horses, sheep, hippos, frogs, lions, cows and much more. Rocking horse is an interesting twist for the kids. It is a traditional toy and a fun game for children of many ages. Children are usually very excited when they see this new animal seat at their home.

The rocking horses vary in size, quality and price. There are so many styles available that you will be confused, but you must choose the right kind for your child. There are some special toys designed for small babies, having supportive seats. Some of them have sound too, which is a value addition for the young kids. For older children, there are larger rocking-horses.

Rocking-horses are best suited for the age group of 1 to 6; it is fun for kids. Children of these ages are fascinated by such things. Bright colours and modern design fascinates the kids while suitable design and thick handles make it convenient for youngsters to ride. They can easily be gripped and can be refinished in between generations. Plus, they are affordable, attractive and functional.

If you are looking for a rocking-horse for a number of children, you should not go for some specific age but choose one which will cover the longest span of years so that you can get most use of the rocking-horse. On the other hand, if you are buying rocking-horse for one specific child, you should choose it according to his age and taste. If your baby is a girl and her favourite colour is pink, go for that. For boys, you may choose sturdy ones.

While purchasing any product for children, especially for young kids, security should be the primary concern. The products that present a safety hazard should not be bought. The development stage of the child should also be considered while selecting a rocking-horse. Some of the tips to improve safety of the child are; springs used in the rocking-horse must be covered or sealed, so that fingers are not pinched; proper covers and seals should be there on the springs, so that little fingers of the kids do not get pinched; if seats of the wooden rocking-horse are not padded, there are chances that it may be slippery, so proper grippers should be placed to avoid any mishap.; these horses should be placed several inches away from walls and furniture so that they may not cause any damage.

It is also important that these rocking-horses should be used in accordance with the recommended age by the manufacturer. For small children, any choking hazard can take place, so they should not be allowed to sit on big ones. Likewise, big children should not use small rocking horse because they may not be designed to resist more weight. These rocking horses should be maintained well and checked periodically to make sure none of the pieces have become loose.

Edgar Cayce Cough Cure

I found this awesome cough cure in one of my mother’s old Edgar Cayce books. For those who do not know, Edgar Cayce was a famous psychic who, while in a trance, could make various predictions and diagnose different illnesses in people.

Being a sick kid (and from a family of smokers), I was prone to chest colds, swollen lymph glands and sore throats. While looking for ways to improve my health, I came across this cough cure from one of Edgar Cayce’s trance transcripts.

The formula consists of: One whole ripe lemon One egg white One tablespoon of honey Whip the egg white until it stands up on its own. Then mix it in a glass with the juice of the whole lemon and honey. Take one tablespoon every 15 minutes. This will probably cover about 1.5 hours. After about 30 minutes to an hour, I would find myself coughing up some nasty stuff. But, it will usually clear out your throat and remove the pain within a couple of hours. Sometimes if I feel a sore throat coming on, I will mix up a batch of this cure and get fast relief.

Now generally speaking, a cough and sore throat is the result of a toxic system. A good follow up to the Cayce formula is to induce a bowel movement, such as an enema or colonic and generate some sweat. I found that this can remove a sore throat and cough within an hour. A bit extreme for most people. But it beats staying in bed all week. For some people, removing mucus forming foods like, milk, sugar, salt and wheat greatly reduce the occurrence of coughs and sore throats.

Can Tonsil Stones Cause a Sore Throat?

There are many different causes of a sore throat. It can be strep throat, a simple nasal drip from a cold, or sore and inflamed tonsils. But if your tonsils are bothering you, it is not necessarily caused by tonsillitis. Something called tonsil stones might be the cause of the sore throat feeling.

Tonsil stones are the result of food buildup, mucous, and bacteria building up at the back of the throat and settling in the tonsils. It can cause a feeling of having a sore throat since these particles can irritate the throat. While it is most likely not tonsillitis, it is still an unsettling and uncomfortable feeling that can stay with you until the problem has been resolved.

Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done to completely get rid of tonsil stones, but there are some things to help make it less severe. Bad breath is usually accompanied by a sore throat and a feeling as if something is always stuck back there, which can cause coughing and soreness. Many times, the tonsil stone will just dislodge itself on its own, and you will cough it up and spit it out.

Other times, they just simply tend to shrink in size for no apparent reason. Gargling thoroughly is a good way to prevent tonsilloliths (another word for tonsil stones) every day. Be sure you don’t eat within thirty minutes of bedtime, as this allows all of the food to go down the throat and not get trapped back there.

The Latest From Juvenile Diabetes Research

Health shows are abuzz with alarm over how juvenile diabetes research finds that children who have high blood pressure, a cholesterol problem and weight issues, are very likely to develop Type II diabetes as soon as they enter adulthood. If you are a parent, this should alarm you too. Scientists have been trying to work out all the consequences that are to be expected from the child obesity epidemic we are going through right now. Doctors classify a child is having a metabolic syndrome when they see a bunch of really unhealthy trends in certain high risk areas. If there is high blood pressure, not enough good cholesterol, fat around the tummy, triglycerides that are running amok and high blood glucose, it tells them that a child is on his way to juvenile diabetes. About 20 years ago, it was unheard of for a child to come down with diabetes. Now, it isn’t uncommon.

Even with all this juvenile diabetes research though, it’s kind of hard for doctors to accurately identify kids with a metabolic syndrome. Other doctors feel that it doesn’t really make sense to diagnose a child in this way, because there’s no telling how many kids diagnosed thus might go on to develop full-blown diabetes.

New juvenile diabetes research published in the Archive of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine seems to be right on cue to change all that. In new reports published in that journal, they’ve used surveys tracking thousands of children with metabolic syndrome and found that there certainly is a way to predict the onset of full-blown diabetes if a child has the metabolic syndrome while still very young. 20% is the figure they’ve arrived at. Having a parent with type II diabetes sends up a child’s risk of developing it himself too.

So what does this mean – should parents be taking their children in to have their hemograms done when they are still five? Perhaps not. But you could keep an eye on a few things. According to the latest juvenile diabetes research, they recommend that you keep an eye on your child’s blood pressure. You should be sure that your pediatrician takes your child’s blood pressure each time you make a visit with your child. If that doesn’t seem normal to you, you can just take a casual reading when you happen to stop by at the pharmacy.

It’s absolutely vital that you know your child’s body mass index. Calculating the BMI of your child is easy. You just use the CDC’s childhood and Teen BMI calculator. If your child is healthy, the BMI rated should fall somewhere between the 5th and 85th percentile. Of course, if one of your child’s parents has type II diabetes, that raises your child’s risk of coming into that himself. If you find yourself in doubt or any of these issues, it’s time for you to stop by at your pediatrician’s.

Types of Chronic Complications – Diabetes

The chronic complications of diabetes are typically classified as microvascular, macrovascular, or neuropathic.

Microvascular complications result from the thickening of capillary and arteriole basement membranes. Although these changes occur in the small blood vessels throughout the body, they most commonly affect the eyes and kidneys, resulting in retinopathy and nephropathy, respectively.

Macrovascular complications of diabetes include coronary artery disease (CAD) and peripheral vascular disease. They result from accelerated atherosclerotic changes in the walls of the coronary arteries and the large and medium blood vessels in the legs and feet.

Diabetic neuropathy, the most common type of chronic complication, can be classified as peripheral (affecting the nerves of the legs and feet), autonomic (affecting involuntary nerves of the internal organs, such as the nerves that innervate the bladder muscles or cardiovascular system), or focal (affecting a single nerve or group of nerves). About 12% of patients have neuropathy when they’re diagnosed with diabetes. After 25 years, that number increases to about 60%. If your patient has Type 2 diabetes, she may have sensory and autonomic dysfunction at the time of diagnosis because Type 2 diabetes is commonly diagnosed long after it begins.

As with many other chronic complications of diabetes, the cause of diabetic neuropathy is poorly understood. However, several theories offer possible explanations. In one theory, vascular changes that occur with diabetes may account for many pathophysiologic changes. For example, because many patients with diabetes also have cardiovascular disease, the blood flow to the capillaries that supply nerve tissue may become impaired, resulting in tissue ischemia or necrosis. In another theory, metabolic changes are the culprit. For example, sorbitol and fructose accumulate in the diabetic patient’s nerve tissue, and the concentration of myo-inositol decreases in the Schwann cells of nerve tissue. Because less myoinositol is available, the myelin sheathes have less protection, and nerve impulses can’t be conducted.

Stages of Diabetic Nephropathy

In a patient with Type 1 diabetes, diabetic nephropathy typically progress through five stages.

Stage I

Stage I, which occurs soon after the onset of diabetes, is characterized by renal hypertrophy, an increased glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and an increased glomerular capillary surface area. With tight blood glucose control, the GFR may return to normal. Microalbuminuria may develop, but it can also be reversed with tight blood glucose control.

Stage II

Stage II occurs about 5 years after the onset of diabetes. During this stage, the glomerular capillary basement membrane thickens, and mesangial matrix material accumulates. This reduces the filtration surface area and results in scarring. The GFR remains elevated.

Stage III

Also known as incipient nephropathy, stage III occurs 10 to 15 years after the onset of diabetes. Characteristic signs include persistent microalbuminuria, a high GFR, and increased blood pressure.

Stage IV

Stage IV develops 15 to 25 years after the onset of diabetes. Signs and symptoms include hypertension, retinopathy, and proteinuria that can be detected by a urine dipstick test. The GFR steadily decreases. Intensive treatment at this stage can help slow the progression of the disease to stage V.

Stage V

In stage V, renal failure progresses to the point that the patient needs dialysis or a kidney transplant. This stage generally occurs 20 to 30 years after the onset of diabetes. Signs include elevated blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels and a rapid decline in the GFR.

Obesity – A Growing Epidemic

We are all aware of the growing obese epidemic that is presently a serious health problem in many parts of the world. We hear it on the news and we see it all around us in our own lives and of those we know. In the United States alone the problem is growing at an overwhelming rate.

True genetics contribute to obesity, however, the rate at which this problem is increasing shows that environmental factors and how we chooses to live our lives play a significant role. Obesity leads to serious health risks. Serious health risks and conditions reduce your chances of reaching your full potential in life.

Here are some obesity statistics. According to the World Health organization, global obesity affects more than 1 billion adults. Childhood obesity is also a serious concern. There is an estimated 22 million children under the age of five expected to be overweight worldwide. According to the US Surgeon General, in the USA the number of overweight children has doubled and the number of overweight adolescents has tripled since 1980. Type 2 diabetes, a condition limited to older adults for most of the 20th century, now affects obese children even before they hit puberty.

In goal setting, your health condition must become a priority. In making plans for the future, your health must be seen as most important. If you have children, you want to be healthy to watch them grow and share in their lives. You want to be able to pass on healthy principles to them to allow them a greater chance of becoming healthy adults. Are you struggling with obesity? Is there someone you know struggling? Use this information to get the knowledge you need to help you or someone you know in making a change in their lives.

Obesity and overweight leads to problems such as:

  • high blood pressure
  • dangerously high cholesterol and triglyceride level
  • insulin resistance and conditions associated with insulin resistance such as type 2 diabetes
  • cardiovascular disease
  • certain types of cancers
  • gallbladder disease
  • chronic musculoskeletal problems
  • skin problems
  • respiratory difficulties
  • infertility
  • osteoarthritis, a major cause of disability in adults.
  • self-esteem issues
  • loss of energy and drive to be able to follow through on your goals and dreams
  • Who is Obese?

Why are some people obese while others are not? Unless there is a hormonal problem, the answer is obvious. Those who are obese take in more calories than they expend. It’s that simple. People who are not obese or overweight are those who expend more calories than they take in.

There are many reasons why people eat more than others who have equal access to food.

  • The way they were raised. Many families prepare high-calorie, fried, decadent foods. When you are raised on this kind of food you develop a taste bud for that decadent taste.
  • Culture. Many cultures believe in eating three meals per day whether or not you are hungry. For many cultures, food is the focus of most social gatherings. We meet each other for lunch or dinner.
  • Some people have a stronger cephalic-phase response when it anticipates food. This means the brain informs the stomach to prepare for food when it sees or smells it. This can trigger serious cravings. After the anticipation, when the person sits down to eat, he/she consumes more.
  • People vary with respect to how much caloric energy they consume daily. The biggest difference is how much exercise one receives or one’s metabolic rate. One’s metabolic rate is the speed at which the body burns up calories.
  • The foods we eat daily contribute to our well-being. Food should be used only to provide us with the nutrients we need to sustain our health. We eat to live not the other way around. If obesity or overweight has become a problem for you, make it your goal to be more aware of your food consumption.

A decision to become healthy can be the best decision you can make. No matter how much wealth one has, it cannot be enjoyed with ill health. No matter how much time spent working on building a prosperous future, it can all be cut short at a moment’s notice with ill health. Make the decision to make your health a priority. Remember, part of achieving your goals is to secure good health so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor.

    Obesity, a Food Addiction

Studies show that the enjoyment derived from eating may come from a surge of dopamine, a chemical in the brain associated with feelings of pleasure. In two recent studies, researchers demonstrated that simply smelling or seeing food causes dopamine levels to rise even for people who are not overweight or obese and that obese people may be more susceptible. This increase in dopamine levels may be a comparable experience to what addicts feel when they crave drugs.

The big business of food enables this addiction to food. Unlike drugs that are illegal, food can be offered up with unrestrained quantities, uncontrollable fat content, and unrestricted tempting appeal. Very few food businesses are preparing foods that cater to healthy living and weight control. Instead many businesses are capitalizing on obesity by creating new product lines, larger clothing, or larger everything for that matter. This further enables the obesity and overweight epidemic.

Addiction to food can be caused for different reasons. A biological addiction to carbohydrates, which results in excessive production of the hormone insulin and/or a loss of self-control and self-discipline. Studies have shown that many people who are overweight suffer from a dysfunctional biological insulin imbalance. This leaves the individual with an insatiable desire for carbohydrates and the pounds just keep adding up.

How do you know if you are a carbohydrate addict?

If you answer yes to the following you may be addicted to carbohydrates and should contact your physician or nutritionist to discuss this.

  • Do you diet quite often but regain the weight you lost and maybe a few extra pounds more?
  • Do you still feel unsatisfied after you finished your meal?
  • Do you have a strong desire for carbohydrate-rich foods such as breads, pasta, ice-cream, chocolate, or cookies.
  • Do you feel sluggish or tired after eating a large meal?

Another reason for obesity is loss of self-control. When one loses self-control and eats without regard for the quality of the food they eat, without regard for the harm it can cause to the body, it triggers the start of an abusive relationship with food. After a while, that person becomes psychologically and emotionally dependent on food. Even with all the education and knowledge available about healthy eating, the individual continues their destructive behavior.

We as a society must become more aware of this serious potential addiction that lay lurking before us at every corner. Food must be seen for what it is. We are what we eat and we eat to live, not the other way around. If you or a loved one suffers with a food addiction, take this opportunity to realize and accept that you have a problem. Speak to your doctor and find the necessary intervention.

    Help for Obesity

We have learned that the neurotransmitter dopamine has the ability to trigger reactions that derive pleasure, reactions we call cravings or urges. After a while, these powerful cravings that are associated with pleasure leaves one addicted to that form of pleasure. This dependency on food to feel good leaves one with low self-esteem and a powerless feeling. In order to end this addiction with food and overcome obesity, the individual has to accept their dependency on food and seek help.

Because eating is something that is a necessary part of life, breaking a food addiction needs to be carefully done. The first step is changing the way you think about food. This requires some counseling as in many cases there are underlying psychological problems that food is used to mask. This time with a professional must be used to resolve any past issues and rebuild self-confidence and self-esteem.

The next step is to get a complete physical. Know you body’s condition. This knowledge brings awareness and more urgency to the problem. Then engage in some form of cardiovascular activity. Find a trainer or someone who can coach your workout routine.

The final step in breaking the food addiction is to change the way you eat. This may require a nutritionist. Learn to prepare healthy, nutritional foods. Education is knowledge and knowledge is empowerment to kick this deadly disease.

There are many resources available for help with food addiction and overeating. Overeaters Anonymous (OA) offers a program of recovery from compulsive overeating using the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of OA. If you don’t know where to begin, start by contacting your family physician or a life coach.

  • Home Remedies for Diaper Rash – What to Do for Infant Skin Rashes

Infants have a very sensitive and delicate skin, and the chances of them getting a diaper rash are very high. Just when you may think that leaving a wet diaper on the baby for a few hours will not cause much harm, the rash might start to develop. Of course, the rate of the development of the rash, and its occurrence is different in each baby. But overall, wet diapers not changed for a long time can cause severe rashes on the baby’s buttocks as well as legs.

It is obviously not safe to trust different medicines and creams available in the market to cure rashes on the baby’s skin. They might have a harmful effect which could create further damage. Thus, it is always good to go in for some safe and tested home remedies instead, which cause no harm, and are quite effective too. With these home remedies, you can be guaranteed that your infant’s skin will not be damaged in anyway.

One of the simplest things that you can begin with is to apply coconut oil regularly on the rash. It will help to soothe the itching and the irritation and will give some comfort to your baby. When infants are affected with diaper rash, they have a tendency to cry a lot as a means of expressing their pain. But with coconut oil, the rash should be able to get cured faster, and the baby will be fine.

Next, make sure that you are not using low quality diapers of any kind of harsh clothing on the baby while he/she is affected with the rash. That can cause further irritation and will make the problem more complicated.

Aloe Vera gel can be applied on the rash to help it cure faster. It will also reduce the inflammation and the itching and will make the baby feel relaxed. Aloe Vera gel is very cool in nature, and its properties are good for treating many different kinds of skin allergies. Besides, it is completely safe and has no harmful effects on the baby.

To relax the baby’s skin, it is a good idea to make your baby stand in front of the fan for a little while, so that the air can reduce the burning sensation. This is not exactly a cure for the rash, but is definitely a good way to cool down the rash and comfort the baby.

There are many different ointments available in the market for rashes of all kinds, and special ones that are meant only for diaper rashes. However, it is always good to first have a check with your doctor before you use that ointment on your baby’s skin. In severe cases, the doctor may also advise some minor diet tips to ensure that the baby does not feel irritated with the rash. Some people also apply a paste made out of corn starch on the rash to cure it, and to reduce the itching and discomfort.

    Yeast Infection Sores

If you have yeast infection sores from a candida fungal outbreak, chances are that you have the infection for a while. Common places that blisters, lesions and sores can be located include (but are not limited to) the penis, vagina, mouth (thrush), diaper area and skin. It is much easier to treat a yeast infection in the early stages with some prescription or over-the-counter anti-fungal remedies. However people with infections that are more severe need to understand exactly what is causing the outbreak to occur. This article will review some reasons why candida infections occur along with some remedies to provide some relief from sores that can come with the outbreak.

Most people experience at least one yeast infection in their lifetime. The most common location for a candida outbreak is in the vaginal area (for women) while men usually get yeast on and around the penis shaft and head. Anyone who has ever experienced the discomfort and pain of thrush, they know all too well the symptoms of an oral yeast infection. Probably the least uncomfortable place to contract a candida infection is in the skin, since there are no organs or genitals affected – the location where the outbreak can occur is usually under the folds of the skin. The infections usually begin with mild symptoms including a red, bumpy rash coupled with itching. Left untreated, the skin can become irritated and sore, resulting in blisters and sores – in extreme cases bleeding can also occur.

If you are at the point where you have sores from either a first-time or reoccurring candida infection, you should spend time considering what might have caused the outbreak to begin with. For many people, the use (or sometimes overuse) of antibiotics can put you at risk. This is because antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria in the body, it also gets rid of the good bacteria that is used to keep yeast levels in check. Yeast thrives (and multiplies) when there is excessive sugar in the body. If you have high blood sugar levels, this creates an environment for a yeast fungal infection. Another common cause for excessive yeast in the genitals is because these are places where excessive moisture and a lack of oxygen exist. Yeast also multiplies under these conditions – so it is a good idea to wear loose clothing in the lower half of of your body and maintain proper hygiene by keeping these areas dry and clean.

Guttate Psoriasis Treatment – An Overview of Natural Treatments for Guttate Psoriasis

Psoriasis shows up on the skin as scaly lesions due to an overactive immune system. Guttate psoriasis is a variation of psoriasis that is characterized by small drop-like lesions all over the body. This type of psoriasis usually shows up in the aftermath of a strep throat infection, although it is unclear why this happens. The connection between upper respiratory infections and guttate psoriasis is strong.

There are no proven medical cures for psoriasis and everyone’s psoriasis cure is different. Guttate can be easily treated using various natural remedies, which are safer and cheaper than conventional treatments. Here are some of the most effective natural treatments for guttate psoriasis.

Psoriasis Natural Treatment #1: Expose Your Skin to Sunlight as a Natural Cure for Guttate Psoriasis

Guttate is very responsive to UV rays. Expose your body to sunlight every day for 10 to 15 minutes to help reduce spots. Sun exposure also allows the body to produce vitamin D, which is strongly linked to the severity of psoriasis symptoms; patients with low vitamin D levels usually have more severe psoriasis. Also be careful not to overexpose yourself or you risk sunburn, which could lead to a psoriasis flare and make lesions worse.

Psoriasis Natural Treatment #2: Take Cold Showers as a Natural Remedy for Guttate Psoriasis

This type of psoriasis can be intensely itchy, but resist your urge to scratch-scratching can damage the skin further or impede healing progress. Beat the itch by taking a lukewarm or cool shower-hot showers may irritate and dry out guttate spots even more. After showering, moisturize heavily to reduce flaking and itching. You can also keep ice packs in the freezer and treat itchy spots if necessary.

Psoriasis Natural Treatment #3: Modify Your Diet for Guttate Psoriasis Relief

Psoriasis and diet are linked. Often, modifying your diet may reduce symptoms. Add more vegetables and fruits to your diet and make sure to reduce your intake of sodium and processed foods. Green leafy vegetables are especially purifying and helpful in removing toxins from the body. Fruits with dark skin are rich in antioxidants which can quell the inflammation that promotes psoriasis symptoms. Also make sure to moisturize your body from the inside by drinking plenty of water as well.

These are only a few of the available treatments for guttate psoriasis. If they do not offer you the psoriasis relief you need, keep trying other natural remedies. For more effective guttate psoriasis remedies that are natural and safe, click here.

Causes and Treatment of Common Fungus Symptoms

Recurring Common Fungus Symptoms: The Basics and Treatment

Certain infections are triggered by the onset of an overgrowth of fungus, such as taking antibiotics and high blood sugar levels.

Very often it is difficult to identify a fungus infection. Knowing the symptoms and causes can pinpoint the infection early so you can treat it.

A common symptom is rashes on the genitals. For women, also soreness and itching or swelling of the labia, and a white discharge from the vagina. Causes are tight clothing, hormonal changes and sitting in damp swim suits.

For men, red patchy sores and sometimes discharge or irritation on the penis will occur. Causes are using antibiotics or sexual intercourse with a woman who has a fungus infection.

Mouth fungus appears in the mouth. You will notice symptoms of white lumpy sponges on the sides of the mouth or on the tongue. They can bleed when touched. Causes in newborn infants are picking up a fungus infection during birth. In adults it can be dentures not properly cleaned or using antibiotics.

Internal fungus infection: Caused by the esophagus, upper intestine, and stomach walls are thinning. Bacteria can affect other organs once in the bloodstream. People can have an internal fungus infection and not know it for some time. Using dietary treatments can help with this.

One should not hesitate to immediately go to the doctor and ask for ways of treatment, if one is in doubt or worried about certain manifesting symptoms.

You can pick up treatments like the anti-fungal Nizoral at the drugstore. These are popular, but only treat the symptoms not the root of the infection.

You can know what to look out for and improve the body’s ability to fight abnormal fungus overgrowth in the first place.

The important thing is to identify and treat the infection early.

Prevent Your Nasal Allergy From Becoming a Bad Sinus Infection

It’s bad enough having an allergy with runny nose and sneezing. What is worse is getting a sinus infection as a result of the allergy. Let’s discuss how to prevent this.

In Allergy – for example weed allergy in the fall-blowing your nose too hard can weaken the immune system by damaging the nasal membranes. Poor sleep, poor diet, anxiety, too many drying medications can reduce the normal immune response. In allergy, getting chilled, and too many iced drinks slow the good nasal cilia response.

    Nasal Cilia

Normally nasal cilia move bacteria out of the nose and keep you healthy. In the early stages of a weed allergy the nasal cilia speed up and the nose drips. Later, the cilia are exhausted, and no longer move the bacteria out of the nose, thereby allowing the bacteria to multiply.

A common cause of sinus disease is the act of blowing the nose too hard. Excessive blowing irritates the nose in the same manner as rubbing the eyes too hard-eye-rubbing damages the delicate eye membranes, and blowing hard can damage nasal membranes. When Big Jim blows hard and loud enough to hear him next door, he is harming his tissues and spreading bacteria to healthy areas of his sinuses and into his ears.

If weeds are your allergy, it is best to remain on the ocean in your yacht. Or, stay indoors and avoid the pollen. Important: If you are in a rainy area, the humidity above 50% increases dust mites and mold so keeping the humidity below 50% is important. Even if weeds are your allergy, dust adds to your misery, as does mold.

Various products can aid your allergy including antihistamine pills such as Claritin and Zyrtec. Nasal sprays containing antihistamine such as Astelin or Astepro help many allergics. If you know your allergy calendar, you can start Nasochrom before the allergy season for good relief. Nasochrom is available without a prescription and has almost no side effects. Some persons do well with the cortisone type nasal sprays such as Flonase or Veramist. For most persons, the effects of the various cortisone nasal sprays are similar, so select by price.

On the other hand, be aware that nasal sprays containing benzalkonium inhibit cilia function. Long-term use of Afrin nasal spray can cause rebound and addiction to this product.

Many of my patients do well during allergy season by rinsing the nose with saline. With pulsatile saline irrigation you get a known removal of pollen and the wave pulsatile action restores cilia function.

    Prevent the Sinus Infection:

Prevention of sinus infection is accomplished by keeping the cilia moving and washing away pollen and bacteria.

Primary weapon is Tea Lemon and Honey. Tea contains xanthines including L theonine that act to speed nasal and chest cilia. Lemon contains antioxidants and thins the mucus, thereby allowing better cilia movement. Honey kills bacteria and also thins mucus. About eight glasses of tea, lemon and honey is best. This must be black or green tea, with or without caffeine. One of the compounds in tea is called EGCG. This blocks the receptor that makes the allergic response of histamine and IgE.

Cilia speed up with rest and relaxation and freedom from anxiety. Use compresses to the sinus areas-

o between the eyes for the ethmoid sinuses

o below the eyes for the maxillary sinuses

o above the eyes for the frontal sinuses

This helps in two ways-increased circulation and resting the patient.

Remember Chicken Soup- Jewish penicillin? That also has factors that speed nasal cilia. Recall, your nose sometimes drips when you take chicken soup.

Humibid is a Guaifensin product that increases cilia movement too. Various proteolytic enzymes such as Papain and Bromelain will thin the mucus and thereby speed cilia. Use a balanced amount of these enzymes that you melt in your mouth. That way, you avoid the stomach acid that inactivates these enzymes.

Adequate fluids help too. Sudafed and related products (pseudoephedrine) work well.

Humming at a low pitched “oooommmm” is a vibratory sound that gets the tissue vibrating, as well as the air itself and helps cilia move well. There is a device called The Flutter Device. It is like a kazoo and when you blow in it, you get a low pitched sound that vibrates not only the chest cilia, but the nasal as well. There is an Australian musical instrument called the DIDGERIDOOS that gives the deep resonate sound ideal for moving chest and nasal cilia.

Jump rope and jumping jacks are also effective for waking up slow cilia, but not many of my patients have the energy for this after six weeks of sneezing.

The doctors all advise adequate sleep and rest. Good advice. How to do this when your nose is plugged and you are sneezing? Since good sleep is primary for keeping up your immunity and avoiding a sinus infection, here are some pointers that help:

Set your sleep clock. If you go to bed nightly at the same time then you sleep clock can be set. Make going to sleep as formal as possible with specific steps you repeat nightly such as:

    Brush your teeth

    Comb/brush your hair

    Cream your hands/face

Try to have the same room temperature and bedclothes. Some persons do better with a sleepy music or a TV show such as the Shopping Channel for men or the Sports Channel for women. You may want to discuss with your doctor about using Melatonin to help set that sleep clock.

For that nighttime plugged nose, a Benzedrex inhaler often works well, as does a Benadryl capsule.

Pulsatile irrigation refers to using a nasal/sinus irrigator device that pulses at a rate to “harmonize” with normal cilia movement. This gently delivers saline solution in the form of waves that, like the ocean, come up and then retreat. Used during the allergy season, pulsatile irrigation is effective in irrigating away dust and pollen, lowering the body’s IgE level in the blood, and reducing the need for drugs.

In some persons, this might be enough relief and allow them to stop taking medications. This method is ideal for those who prefer to avoid drugs for their allergy, particularly if you are pregnant. If you use pulsatile irrigation to remove the jasmine pollen that lands in your nose, you are still allergic to the pollen, but your body can handle the reduced amount of the pollen in your system with fewer symptoms when your natural cilia movement is active in removing the pollen.

    When Mucus is Colored

When mucus is colored, this suggests bad bacteria are in your sinuses. A common cause is using squeeze or pot irrigators that have “flowback,” With flowback, bacteria from the nose flows back into the bottle or pot and grow; then they are introduced back into the nose at the next irrigation.

Pulsatile irrigation should be started to avoid a sinus infection when mucus thickens and becomes colored. That is when the cilia are “worn out. ” The rate of the pulsatile wave action moves the cilia, the wave irrigation action removes thick mucus that may impede cilia movement and flow. An important factor is that pulsatile irrigation removes bacteria and virus products, and is more effective for biofilm removal.

    Biofilm

Biofilm is recognized today as a chief reason why sinus disease is so hard to cure. Here, the bacteria get together in colonies and form a slime coating that makes it difficult for the antibiotic to penetrate. That same coating is sticky so that ordinary rinsing doesn’t do a good job of dislodging this product. Pulsatile irrigation can be highly beneficial where biofilm is the culprit because the pulsation helps to dislodge the sticky memebrane and the wave action helps to move it out of the nose.

Reducing bacterial load is extremely beneficial for preventing sinus infection following an allergy. One approach is prophylactic antibiotic. This can be administered via pulsatile irrigation. However, any antibiotic has drawbacks of sensitizing the patient, building up bacterial resistance and potential side effects of the drug.

    Reduce Bacterial Load

One answer to reducing bacterial load without side effects is to use Xylitol in the pulsatile solution. Xylitol is a sugar that is used to bake cookies for diabetic patients. Because it is metabolized by the liver and not by insulin, it is an ideal sweetener for diabetic patients. However, most bacteria can’t digest it. In essence, the bacteria gorge on the Xylitol which they can’t digest. Think of them as soldiers who are now too stoned or drunk to defend themselves, and can be defeated by your natural defense factors such as lysozyme. Now, these impaired bacteria can be easily swept away.

By delivering Xylitol in the pulsatile irrigator, you significantly lower the bacterial load so that your natural healing takes place to get rid of remaining bacteria.

Xylitol has many advantages. It is inexpensive-about five dollars a pound, it is sold in most health food stores, it has no side effects on the patient, and doesn’t change bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Just as you can use Xylitol daily to sweeten your tea, similarly you can use it daily for nasal/sinus irrigation.

In my practice I have my patients make a 1% Xylitol/Saline solution.

Add 500 cc (about one pint) of bottled or distilled water to the irrigator bowl. Add one teaspoon of salt or one packet of enhanced saline such as Breathe.ease XL. Then add two teaspoons of Xylitol. This makes a 1% solution of Xylitol.

Using this daily at the end of the allergy attack can restore nasal cilia function, remove bacterial products, and significantly lower bacterial load to prevent the sinus infection that may otherwise follow the allergy.

It is always important to get sufficient rest, use the cilia stimulation I have described, and improve natural immunity with good gut bacteria such as probiotics, and keep a sunny outlook.

The American Academy of Otolaryngology estimates 37 million persons with sinus disease in the US. We can significantly reduce this total number by following the plan detailed here.

ADHD With Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) a Treatment That Works

Life is a daily battle when you have a child, like I have, that has a diagnosis of ADHD and Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD). These kids can spend a major portion of their waking moments being disrespectful, rude, bad mannered, disobedient, argumentative and generally negative in their outlook on life.

It drives me crazy to read about studies in the psychiatric literature that point to parenting as a major ’cause’ of oppositional behavior. The climate is changing and Psychiatrist and researchers are realizing that this irritability, contrariness, argumentativeness, etc is hard wired in people with ODD and though parenting can help, it is not the cause. The stimulant medication used to treat ADHD can help with ODD but it rarely addresses the oppositional behavior completely and often it reduces the negativity seen in individuals with ODD by only a fraction.

ADHD and ODD often coexist. It estimated that up to 40% of children with ADHD might also be diagnosed with Oppositional Defiance Disorder. Dr. Charles Parker has reported on research that has found that the Glutamate levels of people with ADHD and ODD can be unusually elevated, supporting the notion that the causes of ODD are biological and not the result of ‘bad’ parenting. There is not a simple correlation between the neurotransmitter Glutamate at ODD but the new ADHD drug Intuniv lowers Glutamate levels and may sometimes be especially useful in treating ADHD with coexisting ODD.

I have found the book The Explosive Child by Ross W. Greene, to be extremely useful and I have found that eliminating any stress that I can from my son’s life is useful as well. My son is much less oppositional when he is relaxed but recently I have discovered a method to improve his ODD that has changed my life. Unless you live with a child with ADHD and ODD you cannot imagine how hellish it can be to get through a day. It wears you down completely to live with someone who continuously complains, argues and loses his or her temper.

The new method that has helped us is extremely simple. I have started ‘bribing’ my son to be cheerful and cooperative. I felt guilty about the thought of using this method for about one day but soon started enjoying myself because immediately this method proved to be tremendously helpful. We had tried positive reinforcement many times in the past but I think what made this reinforcement more powerful was the immediacy and the amount of the reward.

My son is nine and he gets seven dollars (a day) (described to him as a whopping $50.00 a week) if he gets through the week without:

    Being disrespectful

    Talking back

    Saying Negative things

    Complaining

    Losing his temper

    Becoming Immediately Frustrated

    Being Uncooperative

Hitting, screaming, disobeying  I know he is capable of being more positive as he is better behaved at school than at home. I have tried many methods to get him to stop being oppositional at home but this ‘bribing with lots of money’ method has worked the best so far.

The way our system works is that every infraction costs him a dollar. If he extremely contrary or repeatedly complains after he is told he has lost $1.00, it costs him $3.00 and if he has a full blown fit, it costs him his entire $7.00 for the day.

Once he has lost the money, it is gone but he has a chance to earn a fraction of it (up to $2.00 a day) back. If he genuinely says something positive, is genuinely cheerful or if he is genuinely cooperative and helpful.

I have spoken to him at length about our new system and have made it clear to him that the money is for stopping the negative behavior. Once he has behaved disrespectfully or negatively, the damage is done and that, in life, it is difficult to make up for negative actions.

I have told him that people who think positively are more successful in life, get sick less often, live longer and are better able to cope with stress. I have told him that negative thinking is as bad as smoking cigarettes for your heath. We read a pamphlet together which reported the findings of Martin Seligman, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, who found that optimistic people are happier, healthier, live longer and are more successful than people with a negative and angry outlook on life.

We have posted the Martin Seligman poster on the refrigerator and have talked about the research that has proven that all of us have the power to turn negative thinking into positive thinking and have explained to him that getting better at positive thinking, like getting better at baseball or football takes practice and time. I have made it clear to him that this system is so extreme in its rewards because learning to think positively is that important to his life and health.

Last week my son earned 31 dollars and I had the most relaxing week that I have had in about 4 years. I would pay much more than that to not have to live with a person who is as difficult as my son is capable of being. I have routinely paid five times that amount a week to get him and I therapy and it has never been this effective. I know that not everyone can afford this method but if you can afford any large bribe (a camping trip, a movie, a coveted toy) try it. It may change your life.
