Herpes zoster or shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. After the first infection, the virus may remain latent in some nerve fibers and become active again due to stress, pregnancy, compromised immune system, certain drugs or aging. Reactivated herpes zoster affects only one side of the face or body, beginning as a rash and developing into red patches which later become blisters and sores. It can also affect the eye (e.g. corneal inflammation and scarring, conjunctivitis, involvement of the retina and optic nerve).

Signs and symptoms of herpes zoster infection include fever, headache, fatigue, rash, erythematous and sensitive skin, blisters and sores, itching, tingling, burning and pain sensations. Shingles is painful as the virus travels along the nerves to get to the skin, causing damage and inflammation along the way. When the eye is affected, symptoms include redness, dryness and sensitivity to light. Other eye problems may include inflamed eyelids, blurring of vision, corneal inflammation and scarring, glaucoma, cataract, diplopia or double vision and loss of sensation.

Herpes zoster can be diagnosed through physical examination and laboratory tests. Physical examination includes location, description and measurements of sores. Ophthalmoscopes and slit-lamp microscopes examine the eye. Visual acuity and intraocular pressure should also be monitored. Blood tests detect the presence of infection.

Treatment of herpes zoster consists of anti-virals (e.g. Acyclovir), ant-inflammatory medications (e.g. NSAIDS) and topical creams (e.g. Cortisone). The blisters should not be forced to open. The sores may be dried by compressing them with vinegar (diluted with lukewarm water) for at least ten minutes twice a day. As crusts and scabs leave the skin dry, petroleum jelly may be applied to the area. The blisters and sores usually heal in two to four weeks but may leave scars. Ocular herpes zoster is managed with eye drops and/or ointments.

Discomfort may persist even after the sores have healed. Postherpetic neuralgia refers to pain that may continue up to six months as nerves heal very slowly.

The Many Ways One Can Suffer From A Pinched Sciatic Nerve

There are many ways one can incur a pinched sciatic nerve, from herniated discs to excessive sitting can produce nerve compression and thus pain and inflammation of the sciatic nerve roots which can lead to severe damage that can be permanent if left untreated. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, it runs the length of the spinal chord through the center of the bones and is easily damaged.

The most common cause of sciatic nerve compression comes from a herniated disc pressing on the sciatic nerve bundle. Herniated discs create either misalignment or roughening and enlargement of spinal discs which create pressure on the sciatic nerve bundle at the base of the spine causing pain to spread throughout the leg and into the foot. Spinal discs are cushioned on top and below but on the sides they are open and thus bending over sideways at an odd angle to pick something up is more likely to cause a herniated disc than falling backwards and landing on your back. The pain of sciatica is initially sharp and can progress to a tingling sensation or numbness in the entire leg.

Piriformis syndrome can also cause sciatica. Piriformis syndrome occurs when the spinal canal narrows naturally, pressing on the spinal chord and creating less space for the sciatic nerve to exit the spinal canal properly. This is often the cause of sciatica, but is often overlooked as the cause of sciatic nerve compression. This is treated through traction and realignment therapy or manual muscle stretching and massage, loosening the muscles lessening inflammation and pain.

Sciatica is also often experienced during late pregnancy as the uterus presses on the sciatic nerve bundle as well as posture changes from carrying the extra weight of the fetus during pregnancy.

Some problems that create similar symptoms to sciatica include muscle ischemia, where there is low blood flow due to injury or repeated actions that cause the muscles to contract more often. This can happen in all muscles but most commonly occur in the hip rotators. Pseudo-sciatica is often caused by unhealthy postural habits such as sitting for prolonged periods of time leading to vertebral and soft tissue problems resulting in symptoms similar to sciatica.

Regardless of the cause of sciatica, treatment is often the same including surgery, pain medications, steroidal therapy, massage therapy and physical therapy. A visit to a chiropractor may produce temporary relief, while a change in physical habits like more exercise or better padded chairs may help in preventing re-injury.

Ingestion – (Yes, Young Living’s lavender is safe to ingest!) Take an empty “00” size capsule, found at most health food stores, and fill the larger half of the capsule with 5 drops of Lavender. Fill the rest of the large half of the capsule with organic olive oil. Swallow with soy, rice or regular milk, 2 times a day.


RC is a blend of essential oils that relieves allergies PLUS colds, bronchitis, sore throats, sinusitis and coughs. RC includes eucalyptus, myrtle, pine, spruce, marjoram, lavender, cypress and peppermint essential oils.

Bonus tip – Neti Pot

Using a Neti Pot is another great way to keep your nasal passages cleaned from pollens, pollution, dust, dander, etc. A Neti Pot is a tea-pot shaped kettle that is filled with saline solution (salt and water) and is poured into one nostril and then drains out the other nostril. (I do not recommend putting essential oils in the Neti pot.)

This practice of cleansing the sinuses has been used by Ayruveda and Yoga practitioners for thousands of years in India. Today, people in Europe and America practice Neti on a daily basis.

Using a Neti Pot in conjunction with therapeutic grade essential oils can help keep your allergies and hay fever symptoms from reoccurring. Neti pots are available over-the-counter at many drug stores, health food stores, and online retailers. They cost between $10 and $20.
