Ever had stinky tonsil balls come out of your throat? One minute you’re going about your day and the next minute you get an unpleasant sour taste in you mouth. You then feel a piece of gunk in your and mouth and when you take it out with your fingers it’s a very foul smelling chunk of white or yellow debris.
If you have been in this situation you probably remember many times feeling nervous or confused or perhaps with a sense of curiosity, after all you decided to smell this piece of gunk. Those of us who have been in this situation wondered many times if something very serious was going on with our health.
What you first need to understand is that this condition is very common in the general population. Although it often more common in children and teenagers it is very often seen in adults of all ages. These stinky balls that are found in the back of the throat and behind the tonsils are sometimes referred to as throat stones, but are actually called tonsil stones or by their medical term tonsilloliths.
First let’s look at what tonsil stones are not:
· They are not pieces of throat tissue coming off- yes, believe it or not people often think that the tissue is falling apart and damage is occurring in the throat
· It is not cancer or cancerous symptoms
· It is not some unknown or severe illness
Tonsil stones are a combination of:
· Dead white blood cells
· Oral bacteria
· Overactive salivary glands
· Mucus secretions
· Postnasal drip
· Residual of enzyme action on retained food
· Smoking without a filter
· Allergy/intolerance to dairy products
When the mucous, bacteria, saliva and other debris combine and hardens you end up with the white or yellow balls that range in size. The end result of tonsilloliths can end up being a source of bad breath and many times discomfort when swallowing. As you can see the tonsil balls with the foul smell are common and nothing to be concerned about. There are temporary and permanent solutions available that are recommended if you want to get rid of this problem.
